- 0:01Speaker 1: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:20Speaker 2: for millennials who want financial freedom. Now by now you
- 0:24Speaker 2: probably know that my name is Victoria Devine and as
- 0:26Speaker 2: always I am joined for Money Diaries by Ryan John.
- 0:30Speaker 2: This week's diary was honestly one of our favorites to date.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And I know we say that all the time, but
- 0:35Speaker 2: we were joined by one of our country community members
- 0:38Speaker 2: who's savvy seven year old is helping the family make
- 0:41Speaker 2: better investment choices. This is the email she sent to
- 0:45Speaker 2: the team.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Hey, Ryan, I started investing with Superhero in November twenty twenty,
- 0:50Speaker 3: so that's a lot not that long ago, late last year.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's actually quite recent. That's four months.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Ago after learning all about investing through She's on the
- 0:59Speaker 3: Money in other podcasts that I listened to during lockdown.
- 1:02Speaker 3: We have a smaller portfolio, investing between one hundred and
- 1:04Speaker 3: one hundred and fifty dollars as that's all we could
- 1:06Speaker 3: afford as a family at the time, currently sitting on
- 1:09Speaker 3: nine investments with a return of four point eight nine
- 1:12Speaker 3: percent return, although this varies daily obviously. Now this is
- 1:15Speaker 3: where it's going to get really interesting for YOUV you
- 1:17Speaker 3: ready for.
- 1:17Speaker 2: This, I'm so ready.
- 1:20Speaker 4: We love the ease of.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Superhero to purchase the information provided and it's a simple format.
- 1:25Speaker 3: So much so that one of the nine investments we
- 1:27Speaker 3: are sitting on was chosen by my seven year old
- 1:30Speaker 3: because when I was reading up on the company, he
- 1:32Speaker 3: decided to help me.
- 1:34Speaker 4: That's actually seven years old.
- 1:36Speaker 2: That's so cute. And you know what, Ryan, that actually
- 1:38Speaker 2: ties into recent research that says your money story starts
- 1:42Speaker 2: foming at the age of seven. Check that out a
- 1:45Speaker 2: Superhero fan.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So once a month, the seven year old and I
- 1:48Speaker 3: sit down and we check in and we see how
- 1:51Speaker 3: our investments go.
- 1:51Speaker 2: That makes my soul so happy.
- 1:53Speaker 4: We so love it.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I always thought that this was something we couldn't achieve
- 1:57Speaker 3: whilst having a young family slash saving for a house,
- 1:59Speaker 3: because you know, we've got these young kids for a house.
- 2:01Speaker 3: But they said, no, we're going to spread it out
- 2:03Speaker 3: and we can have multiple priorities at a time, and
- 2:05Speaker 3: as well as saving up for their emergency fund and
- 2:07Speaker 3: getting ready and through the bushfire evacuations and stuff like that.
- 2:10Speaker 3: They've had a tough time.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And they're still investing.
- 2:13Speaker 3: They've kind of just decided that we're not going to
- 2:15Speaker 3: have an excuse, and even though we can only invest
- 2:18Speaker 3: little bits, we're.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Still going to do it.
- 2:19Speaker 2: That is the mentality that I would like everybody to have.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Let's give them a call, shall we?
- 2:24Speaker 2: Let's call them now?
- 2:30Speaker 4: Hello, Hey, this is Ryan from ses on the Money.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Hey you doing.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I'm well, how are you well?
- 2:36Speaker 4: I've got Victoria to vine with me here as well
- 2:38Speaker 4: as say hi.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The hello, Hello, how are you well? Thank you? How
- 2:42Speaker 2: are you really well? Victoria was so grateful that you're
- 2:46Speaker 2: joining us, especially at kids' dinner time.
- 2:49Speaker 1: That's okay. I was like, to sit there, I.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Mean, do we get dinner too?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Pop round.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Victoria was very tough to hear that you're seven year
- 3:00Speaker 3: old is getting into the investing side of things.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yes. So he was like, I don't like this one, mom,
- 3:06Speaker 1: how about we talk about because I gave them sort
- 3:08Speaker 1: of two options when we were looking at the profiles
- 3:11Speaker 1: because it's quite basic up on Superhero and he was like, no,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I don't really like that one, and I was like,
- 3:15Speaker 1: oh why.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So we were like, look, I read the ad report
- 3:19Speaker 2: and their CEO just hadn't made some really bad decisions
- 3:22Speaker 2: in the last financial year.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I was like, look, this is how and he's like, mom,
- 3:27Speaker 1: So we went with Arena and he chose that one
- 3:31Speaker 1: because it builds early learning development centers, childcares and so forth,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and healthcare over the other one I was looking at
- 3:40Speaker 1: with service stations. He's like, Mom, we have enough fuel
- 3:42Speaker 1: stations of honey. Yeah.
- 3:45Speaker 2: So I was like, we need more education mom.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Pretty much yeah, and healthcare.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So I would take stock tips from this kid. He
- 3:52Speaker 2: knows what's up. So I was like, okay, gosh, you'll get.
- 4:00Speaker 1: No.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But like, investing can start small and it can grow
- 4:04Speaker 2: from there. And I think that in a situation where
- 4:07Speaker 2: you are investing with children, it's arguably better to start
- 4:11Speaker 2: with small amounts because those amounts are tangible to them.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Like they know how much like milk might cost, they
- 4:17Speaker 2: know how much lollies are, et cetera. They're not going
- 4:19Speaker 2: to understand one hundred thousand dollars share port volio. That's
- 4:22Speaker 2: beyond what their comprehension is.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So for us, we live region or remote, yeah, we
- 4:28Speaker 1: don't have takeaway options or anything like that. So I said, okay, well,
- 4:32Speaker 1: if we do go ahead with buying this one, that
- 4:35Speaker 1: is pretty much the four of us going out for
- 4:37Speaker 1: dinner to the local pub and he's like, well, I
- 4:40Speaker 1: could make lasagna, and I was.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Like, oh my gosh.
- 4:43Speaker 1: The little compromises just so that he was more aware of, well,
- 4:47Speaker 1: we don't have lots of money, we can't do both
- 4:49Speaker 1: all the time, and getting him in the mindset of okay,
- 4:52Speaker 1: well you know you might need to sacrifice a little bit, and.
- 4:55Speaker 2: He's okay with that.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeahwe Oh my god, he's made more as onions than
- 5:01Speaker 3: I have and longer than seven years, so easy.
- 5:07Speaker 4: So that's really impressive. What we're going to do is
- 5:10Speaker 4: design the investing both.
- 5:14Speaker 3: What we're going to do is go through our regular
- 5:17Speaker 3: money diary esque questions and then even though we've got
- 5:20Speaker 3: off track because we were so impressed with I was like,
- 5:23Speaker 3: what why is this not my child It's.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Definitely wasn't my childhood. So that's kind of where we're
- 5:30Speaker 1: going to make some improved steps.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Well, why don't we jump into the official interview questions,
- 5:35Speaker 2: ask those and then we can have a chat straight
- 5:38Speaker 2: after about that story. Yep, okay, So let's jump into
- 5:42Speaker 2: the first question and start with, can you describe to
- 5:45Speaker 2: me what your relationship with money is like?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Been up and down, probably more of a negative. Through
- 5:51Speaker 1: my early twenties, I probably relied on credit more than
- 5:53Speaker 1: I should have.
- 5:54Speaker 2: So it's improving, improving. I like that. So what do
- 5:58Speaker 2: you do for work and for the rest of your life?
- 6:01Speaker 1: So pretty much I work in regional tourism, and.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Regional tourism have had a pretty interesting twelve months, It's
- 6:07Speaker 3: fair to say, a bit.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Rocky, you might say.
- 6:09Speaker 1: So. First we were evacuated with bushfires, and then we
- 6:14Speaker 1: returned home for about a month before getting shut downs
- 6:18Speaker 1: for COVID Britten of Victoria.
- 6:21Speaker 2: So you've essentially been thrown under the bus.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It's a nice way to word.
- 6:25Speaker 2: How is it going now? Are you going? Are you
- 6:27Speaker 2: back to work? Are you planning on going back to
- 6:29Speaker 2: work soon? What does the next twelve months look like?
- 6:32Speaker 1: So I've actually just finished up with this job. I've resigned,
- 6:36Speaker 1: finishing mid March, and then I'm going to work still
- 6:41Speaker 1: in regional tourism, but in our local community on a
- 6:44Speaker 1: thirty eight hour week contract.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Oh cool, Well, I'm glad that exists for you.
- 6:48Speaker 3: So it just comes down to you just need full
- 6:50Speaker 3: time hours and you've got to take what you can get, right.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yes, And the other position was forty five minutes away.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Oh that's a bit of a hike.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Yeah, so drive time, I'll be saying, in an hour
- 7:00Speaker 1: and a half a day, Oh how good, plus weare
- 7:04Speaker 1: and tear on the car. So my partner worked out
- 7:06Speaker 1: He's like, it's a ten grand savings. I was like, okay,
- 7:09Speaker 1: he's week in more hours and you can pretty much
- 7:13Speaker 1: walk or ride to work.
- 7:14Speaker 2: So that how good is that? That'll be much better
- 7:17Speaker 2: for work life balance, I believe. So I want to
- 7:20Speaker 2: get a little bit per V. What do you earn
- 7:23Speaker 2: and how much money is sitting in your bank account
- 7:25Speaker 2: right now?
- 7:26Speaker 1: So I earn forty eight thousand a year in my
- 7:30Speaker 1: bank account in multiple accounts, so pretty much we have
- 7:34Speaker 1: everything's joint for us. In our pay account, it's sitting
- 7:37Speaker 1: in at one thousand dollars with two thousand coming in tonight.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Our short term savings is sitting at three hundred and
- 7:44Speaker 1: thirty dollars. Our direct debit account is sitting at six
- 7:48Speaker 1: hundred and eighty home loan account that we're trying to
- 7:52Speaker 1: say for it's about four and a half grand. Then
- 7:55Speaker 1: we sort of have one thousand dollars buffer account in
- 7:57Speaker 1: case something comes up and then a separate immergegency fund
- 8:01Speaker 1: for about two and a half two wasn't at the moment.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And do you feel confident making decisions around money.
- 8:08Speaker 1: We're getting better, I liked, we probably spent quite easily
- 8:12Speaker 1: and we're starting to rein it in good We were
- 8:15Speaker 1: in a higher income in a city and then we've
- 8:18Speaker 1: gone to lesser income for a better family life where
- 8:22Speaker 1: we're living, and in turn we're probably still spending like
- 8:25Speaker 1: we we're making a lot more money.
- 8:27Speaker 2: That is so common, so many people do that you
- 8:30Speaker 2: just get used to that type of lifestyle. Like it's
- 8:34Speaker 2: exactly but you get used to the bottle of wine
- 8:37Speaker 2: that you pick up from the bottle though, like you
- 8:39Speaker 2: just get used to it. Same with food. You just
- 8:42Speaker 2: get used to a certain standard of things. And changing
- 8:45Speaker 2: your entire budget isn't actually as easy as just going, oh,
- 8:49Speaker 2: we'll just rein it in a bit, like you actually
- 8:50Speaker 2: have to plan for.
- 8:51Speaker 1: That, Yes, and so it's got My partner pretty much
- 8:56Speaker 1: unfortunately worked after some seasonally employment for a few weeks
- 9:00Speaker 1: before we got evacuated for bush fires, and has probably
- 9:03Speaker 1: only been working for the last three months. So we
- 9:07Speaker 1: lived off our emergency savings or our emergency fund and
- 9:10Speaker 1: part of our house deposits.
- 9:11Speaker 2: My gosh, how stressful.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Well it wasn't.
- 9:15Speaker 3: It wasn't a release to That's why you have an emergence.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's exactly why you have it, right.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yeah, And so we did all of that. We had
- 9:23Speaker 1: a lot more family time, We planted our veggie garden,
- 9:26Speaker 1: we adopted some chickens, We spent more time together, the
- 9:29Speaker 1: four of us. So there was a lot of positives
- 9:31Speaker 1: for us out of COVID and then reassessing how much
- 9:34Speaker 1: we can actually survive on happily. So it's actually helped
- 9:39Speaker 1: us with our budget.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So you basically lived my dream life during COVID. I
- 9:43Speaker 2: really want chickens.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Chickens so many Dallas people right now.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Steve says no, but that's okay, all right, So how
- 9:50Speaker 2: do you feel.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Do I get drunk through COVID Because that's how I
- 9:53Speaker 1: bought our chicken croop.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I was like, oh what happened? Oh she bought a
- 9:58Speaker 2: chicken croup. I bought a kitten and a puppy. So
- 10:02Speaker 2: I don't know if I can stopper.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And I was like, let's do this.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Ten out of ten. I bet it is the bougiest
- 10:10Speaker 2: chicken coop you've ever seen it?
- 10:11Speaker 1: Matches our house.
- 10:12Speaker 2: It's all our good all right, back to questions, how
- 10:18Speaker 2: do you feel about money coming into your bank account?
- 10:20Speaker 1: Good? We're so Scott and I have kind of land
- 10:23Speaker 1: that we can live on minimum hours, So twenty two
- 10:26Speaker 1: point eight is pretty much all I'm earning at the moment,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and we have worked out our budgets and our direct
- 10:32Speaker 1: debits and everything on that basic income. So with a
- 10:35Speaker 1: new job, moving up to thirty eight hours with pay rise,
- 10:39Speaker 1: we're going to be putting more money into our home. One.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so good. That is so good. So do
- 10:45Speaker 2: you currently invest if so? How?
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yes? So we started after listening to a few podcasts
- 10:51Speaker 1: so She's on the money, as well as a few
- 10:53Speaker 1: others through lockdown.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Which are the other ones? Do you listen to my
- 10:55Speaker 2: Millennial Money?
- 10:57Speaker 1: I do?
- 10:57Speaker 2: Oh I love them?
- 10:59Speaker 1: So that one Australian Finance with.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Oh yeah yeah they're great. Yeah yeah.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Well as Equity Mates Yeah yeah.
- 11:07Speaker 2: They're great too, all of them.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yes, So it was quite good. We I realized when
- 11:12Speaker 1: I first started working from home, I was listening to
- 11:14Speaker 1: crime podcasts and I was like, well, this isn't effective.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I still listen to crime podcasts.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So a Facebook group I follow suggested your page first.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So from you guys in season one spiral, Yeah, so
- 11:28Speaker 1: it was really exciting. So investment we started with Spaceship.
- 11:32Speaker 1: We have about eight hundred dollars in that one. From there,
- 11:37Speaker 1: we also have Superhero. Yep, so a superhero that's not
- 11:43Speaker 1: sitting that well today, but we have been got nine
- 11:47Speaker 1: different options in Superhero and it's raising between a positive
- 11:53Speaker 1: one point eight percent and eleven percent. Would Yes, that's
- 11:57Speaker 1: been exciting. And I also spiraled down in to the
- 12:00Speaker 1: rabbit warren of crowd equity funding for IPOs. Oh my gosh,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and we sit on a little part of a company
- 12:08Speaker 1: in there as well.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Oh how cool. That's super fun. And you do all
- 12:12Speaker 2: of that through Superhero.
- 12:14Speaker 1: No, the crowd funding was through another app, and.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Yeah, how fun.
- 12:20Speaker 1: So I refinitely extarted for June for when you potentially
- 12:23Speaker 1: might be launching something else.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Yes, keep it out all right. Do you have any
- 12:29Speaker 2: debts of any kind? If so, what if not, how
- 12:32Speaker 2: do you feel about debt?
- 12:34Speaker 1: We have about one thousand and two hundred owing on
- 12:39Speaker 1: a credit card and that is actually all getting repaid
- 12:42Speaker 1: to us after we listen to your insurance like session really. Yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 1: so we realized that that's actually owed to us, so
- 12:52Speaker 1: that actually owe us one thousand, five hundred. So we'll
- 12:54Speaker 1: be in front on the.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Credit card nic money win.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Correct. We paid that off over through COVID, and then
- 13:01Speaker 1: Scott just has a personal loan and it's five thousand dollars.
- 13:05Speaker 1: So once the credit card's done, we'll be focusing.
- 13:08Speaker 2: On getting one that. How good.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and then it'll pretty much just all be going
- 13:14Speaker 1: into savings, all back into investing.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I like that. So do you have any good money
- 13:19Speaker 2: habits that you're especially proud of?
- 13:21Speaker 1: Not really. The last six months gave us time to
- 13:24Speaker 1: sit down do our budget focus. We sort of now
- 13:28Speaker 1: know how much money is going out for school fees,
- 13:32Speaker 1: after school activities, and then we've also put in place,
- 13:36Speaker 1: you know that extra coffee money, a few other things.
- 13:39Speaker 1: For my birthday this year, We've got a nice coffee machine,
- 13:41Speaker 1: so we're not spending so much money out.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Another money win from you.
- 13:45Speaker 4: That's the definition of a gift that keeps on giving.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that is actually very shot backed.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Oh, money win win win, so exciting.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I love that.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Yeah, So small little things like that are encouraging us,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I suppose to be a little bit more like happy
- 13:59Speaker 1: with our decisions and bigger purchases. We're enjoying spending the
- 14:04Speaker 1: money because we've got the money. It's not coming out
- 14:06Speaker 1: from credit. We've actually saved it.
- 14:09Speaker 2: And it feels so much more encouraging, doesn't it.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 1: No, not one hundred percent at this point, but there's
- 14:15Speaker 1: slow steps that we are becoming more money confident.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie, but I think that all
- 14:20Speaker 2: of that is are wildly incorrect. Because you said that
- 14:24Speaker 2: you're not sure if you don't have any good money.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I was going to say, and I'm pretty sure your
- 14:29Speaker 2: email to us outlined the fact that your kids are
- 14:31Speaker 2: talking about investment on a weekly basis. So I will
- 14:35Speaker 2: start there and say that I would be especially proud
- 14:38Speaker 2: of that.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Well, so a little while ago they where we live,
- 14:42Speaker 1: we have quite a big open water space and they
- 14:44Speaker 1: want to kayaks. So I have one from years ago
- 14:47Speaker 1: as a birthday gift, and I just went, well, you know,
- 14:50Speaker 1: Dad and I aren't a position at the moment. Dud
- 14:52Speaker 1: was working hospitality and hospitality was in a low season.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I said, we can't really afford it, but you know,
- 14:57Speaker 1: they're collecting cans for ten cents ap. Why don't you
- 15:01Speaker 1: guys start doing that and then if you can reach that,
- 15:03Speaker 1: we'll have the kayak cock.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Oh that's so good.
- 15:07Speaker 1: They went to our next door neighbors and a few
- 15:10Speaker 1: other people and said, look, this is what we're going
- 15:12Speaker 1: to be doing. So they were four and five at
- 15:15Speaker 1: the time. It was mainly driven by our five year
- 15:17Speaker 1: old and he was like, if I collect all these cans,
- 15:21Speaker 1: mom and dad are going to give me money for
- 15:22Speaker 1: a kayak, and we now have Ko kayaks.
- 15:26Speaker 2: These kids. I loved him.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Yeah, so he would go. He's like, oh, we'll come
- 15:32Speaker 1: down and pick them up. We'll ride our bikes down
- 15:34Speaker 1: and get them. So indirectly I had to push a
- 15:36Speaker 1: wheelbarrow down to collect collect Yeah. No. So he had
- 15:42Speaker 1: these great ideas and everyone was quite supportive, and our
- 15:45Speaker 1: house just built up with cans and bottles and then
- 15:48Speaker 1: they would sort them between cans and plastics and then glass,
- 15:52Speaker 1: and then he would go and put them in to
- 15:53Speaker 1: get his ten cents and made money over a summer holiday.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, so here could go.
- 15:59Speaker 2: That is the sweetest thing ever. I will almost feel
- 16:03Speaker 2: bad having to ask you the next question, which is
- 16:06Speaker 2: what is your worst money habit?
- 16:09Speaker 1: Probably food. We don't really have a buffer for food.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Like last night, I was like, oh, we'll just going
- 16:13Speaker 1: to visit that at work, and then we walked out
- 16:15Speaker 1: with one hundred dollars food bills, just the kids and
- 16:17Speaker 1: I because we were eating good food and drinking gin.
- 16:20Speaker 1: I was like, oh, well I was they went.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I was about to be like, okay, you do you
- 16:26Speaker 2: spending their kayak money on gin?
- 16:29Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 16:30Speaker 1: So probably our worst one is good food and good wine.
- 16:33Speaker 1: But we also live in northeast Victoria, so we are
- 16:36Speaker 1: spoilt with choices.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely. So what are you currently saving for? Do
- 16:42Speaker 2: you have a big money goal at the moment?
- 16:44Speaker 1: Short term is going to be our holidays. Kids want
- 16:47Speaker 1: to go up to Gold Coast, so we're saving for that,
- 16:51Speaker 1: and then long term house deposit.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I love that final question before we jumped to a
- 16:56Speaker 2: quick break. How would you rate yourself if I forced
- 16:59Speaker 2: you to give yourself for financial reading see s C.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Why is that only because I've only just put in
- 17:07Speaker 1: place our budget and I think that we can tweak
- 17:10Speaker 1: that to be more positive with regular investments into investing
- 17:14Speaker 1: and some more money going into house deposits and so
- 17:17Speaker 1: forth once our debt has cleared.
- 17:27Speaker 2: So, Ryan, how did you like that?
- 17:31Speaker 4: Very impressive?
- 17:32Speaker 2: I was impressive.
- 17:33Speaker 3: I just want to ask if it's deliverate or just
- 17:36Speaker 3: happening anyway. But it feels like you're teaching your kids
- 17:40Speaker 3: some really great lessons about not just money, but about
- 17:43Speaker 3: kind of discipline and sacrifice. And if I want something great,
- 17:47Speaker 3: I have to put some thought and effort into it.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Is that something that you've consciously decided or is that
- 17:51Speaker 3: just naturally coming out? Because I think either way, it's
- 17:53Speaker 3: definitely happening. By the sounds of things.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I think a little bit natural. So growing up, my
- 17:59Speaker 1: parents bankrupt when we're about when I was about five,
- 18:03Speaker 1: so mum and dad have taught us a little bit
- 18:05Speaker 1: about money. They were very frugal, and I think that's
- 18:08Speaker 1: potentially why we spend a little bit more on food
- 18:11Speaker 1: and wine, because it's things that we didn't get when
- 18:12Speaker 1: we were younger. Yeah, okay, So I think the transparency
- 18:16Speaker 1: that we're trying to show to the kids, they're more
- 18:19Speaker 1: aware of it, so then they can consciously make their
- 18:21Speaker 1: decisions as they grow up. I like that.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I really really like that, and I think it's something
- 18:25Speaker 2: that at any income level is teachable, and I think
- 18:29Speaker 2: that being transparent with your kids is never a bad thing.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I grew up and my parents were always super transparent
- 18:35Speaker 2: about money, and I thought that it taught me a
- 18:36Speaker 2: lot about well, what can we afford and how does
- 18:38Speaker 2: this work and what does that mean? And I think
- 18:41Speaker 2: that that taught me that there's a lot to do
- 18:43Speaker 2: with consequences, right, like you can pick one thing or
- 18:45Speaker 2: not another thing. But I think that not enough people
- 18:48Speaker 2: are doing it. So I'm so excited that you are.
- 18:51Speaker 3: A few years ago, I had to leave it like
- 18:53Speaker 3: a pretty high paying job, and I was just mentally
- 18:56Speaker 3: a mess because I just was like, oh, this is it.
- 18:58Speaker 3: I've wasted my chance over But it seems with all
- 19:02Speaker 3: the setbacks you've had, you've seemed to just accepted that
- 19:06Speaker 3: it's just a temporary thing. It'll be fine later on.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I'll eventually get back to full time work. It seemed
- 19:11Speaker 3: too as hard, and I mean, it's easy for us
- 19:13Speaker 3: to say in hindsight and we didn't have to go
- 19:14Speaker 3: through it, But hearing you, it sounds like you just
- 19:18Speaker 3: did a really good job of accepting that making the
- 19:20Speaker 3: best of a bad situation, and didn't let it get
- 19:23Speaker 3: you down too much? Is that fair to say? And
- 19:26Speaker 3: because it sounds like you've been having a pretty good.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Time, Yeah, we had a fantastic time. I think if anything,
- 19:32Speaker 1: it's kind of bought the four of us together a
- 19:35Speaker 1: little bit more because we realized when we moved to
- 19:37Speaker 1: this location the work wasn't the same money that we
- 19:41Speaker 1: would have been getting if we were in a city,
- 19:43Speaker 1: so there might be a little bit of sacrifices. So
- 19:45Speaker 1: we almost work opposite shifts so that one of us
- 19:48Speaker 1: is always home with the kids. So that was a
- 19:49Speaker 1: sacrifice we did in move into this area. So yeah,
- 19:53Speaker 1: the last like twenty twenty, we spent so much time together,
- 19:56Speaker 1: lots of family cooking and adventures within our little small radius.
- 20:00Speaker 1: So it's been quite good. And I think compared to
- 20:03Speaker 1: a lot of others, we've got our health, we've got
- 20:06Speaker 1: each other. We're kind of all right.
- 20:08Speaker 2: I like that mentality. I think we all probably could
- 20:11Speaker 2: be reminded of it. So that is a very gentle
- 20:14Speaker 2: and lovely to reminder to hear.
- 20:16Speaker 4: What would you say to other people?
- 20:19Speaker 3: What would you say to other people who are thinking
- 20:21Speaker 3: of doing the you know, the country change. Is it
- 20:24Speaker 3: a fun thing to do? While the kids are young?
- 20:26Speaker 3: Are you going to stay there forever? How to adapt
- 20:29Speaker 3: to the money differences because obviously, like you said, the
- 20:32Speaker 3: wages are less, but maybe the house prices are less
- 20:34Speaker 3: than it might even out. So yeah, what kind of
- 20:35Speaker 3: advice would you give to other people living in the
- 20:37Speaker 3: city contemplating moving out there?
- 20:40Speaker 1: I would say, probably don't move to our area because
- 20:43Speaker 1: our house prices are currently sitting at the same as
- 20:45Speaker 1: Melbourne prices.
- 20:47Speaker 4: What's the point of this.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Which is keeping a few low income families like us
- 20:53Speaker 1: out of the market. Yeah, if they've got the option
- 20:56Speaker 1: coming into the community, it's fantastic. So when we first
- 20:58Speaker 1: moved here and a half years ago, I was walking
- 21:01Speaker 1: with a double pran down the sidewalk and there was
- 21:04Speaker 1: these two ladies standing in the rain and I was like,
- 21:06Speaker 1: what are they doing now out in front of our
- 21:08Speaker 1: house and they're like, Hi, are you Emma? I was
- 21:10Speaker 1: like yes, and I was like, oh my goodness, the
- 21:11Speaker 1: dog is barking or something's happened. Because we're in Melbourne
- 21:14Speaker 1: and people only approached you if something was wrong, to.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Complain about something.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Yes, they need something from me.
- 21:20Speaker 1: So ye standing in the rain and they were like
- 21:24Speaker 1: they introduced themselves and then they were like, oh, welcome.
- 21:28Speaker 1: We just wanted to give you like our local package
- 21:31Speaker 1: and it had everything from vouchers to local restaurants, homemade
- 21:35Speaker 1: jams and chutney's from a local store. It had all
- 21:38Speaker 1: our CFA, information support networks, the local playgroup. There was
- 21:43Speaker 1: a big bag of goodness. And I was like, oh,
- 21:46Speaker 1: what is the space we moved there?
- 21:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I moved recently, how rude, I know.
- 21:54Speaker 1: So it was fantastic and indirectly they still pop past
- 21:58Speaker 1: and say hi, and you know, they're watching the kid
- 22:00Speaker 1: to grow over the last four years. So it's it's
- 22:02Speaker 1: really really lovely this community. So I think if people
- 22:05Speaker 1: were thinking about, I suppose relocating, it's probably dependent on
- 22:09Speaker 1: what they want to do. So we've got really supportive
- 22:11Speaker 1: networks within the community, not just the school community, but
- 22:16Speaker 1: within our local community. You know, it's really good to
- 22:18Speaker 1: go to local farmers' markets and know your local butcher.
- 22:21Speaker 1: There's lots of positive I think with some of the negatives.
- 22:24Speaker 1: You know, we don't always have some activities like our
- 22:28Speaker 1: son wanted to learn fencing and I was like, that's
- 22:31Speaker 1: not really an option here were Yeah, so pretty much
- 22:38Speaker 1: you know, with smaller schools and things like that. It's
- 22:41Speaker 1: their learning. It's pretty much one to one, which is
- 22:45Speaker 1: a lot different compared to when we were in high
- 22:47Speaker 1: school and there was you know, seven hundred people there.
- 22:50Speaker 1: But yeah, lots of positive and I think sometimes there
- 22:52Speaker 1: are negatives, just depending on how you adapt. Like if
- 22:55Speaker 1: you quite used to pop into the supermarket at two
- 22:57Speaker 1: o'clock in the morning, that doesn't exist here.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not an option.
- 23:01Speaker 3: So I live in a really small town and my
- 23:04Speaker 3: partner came up for a weekend bridge and it was
- 23:07Speaker 3: eight o'clock on a Friday night, and she said, do
- 23:09Speaker 3: you think any of the food places are still open?
- 23:12Speaker 4: With in the city. I reckon, we're half a chance
- 23:14Speaker 4: bridge to get some food.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah maybe, poor sweet country girl.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Hey, thank you so much for sharing his story and
- 23:21Speaker 3: let us and letting us purve and pry on your
- 23:23Speaker 3: financial details. It's been interesting and as we said before,
- 23:27Speaker 3: very impressive to hear about how the family's all getting
- 23:30Speaker 3: into it and not letting you know, what could be
- 23:32Speaker 3: a good excuse to not invest or to let things slip,
- 23:35Speaker 3: but it actually seems like you're coming out in a
- 23:37Speaker 3: real positive space. So well done and thanks again for sharing.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you so very much. Just before we head off,
