- 1:23Speaker 3: the Money community members all.
- 1:24Speaker 4: About their money habits.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Let's jump straight into it, because this week I got
- 1:28Speaker 3: a message and it sounded exactly like this, dear, she's
- 1:32Speaker 3: on the money. I'm a mom of two who launched
- 1:34Speaker 3: a small business just two weeks ago. The journey to
- 1:38Speaker 3: launching this company has been wild. We lost seventeen thousand
- 1:42Speaker 3: dollars to a sourcing agency, had to take out a
- 1:45Speaker 3: loan on our home, turned to family, and somehow managed
- 1:48Speaker 3: to raise two hundred thousand dollars to build the business
- 1:52Speaker 3: without investors. There's a big gap in the market, and
- 1:56Speaker 3: I'm on a mission to blow.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Up this space.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Oh my god, I cannot wait for this to blow
- 2:01Speaker 3: up and then me call you back in like a
- 2:03Speaker 3: year or two and can you come back on my podcast,
- 2:05Speaker 3: and then maybe to be too popular for me. So
- 2:08Speaker 3: I'm so excited, Money Diarist, Before I ask any more
- 2:13Speaker 3: gritty questions, what grade would you give you money habits
- 2:15Speaker 3: if I asked you to give them a grade from
- 2:17Speaker 3: A three to.
- 2:17Speaker 5: F, Oh, I'd give it a C A C.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You've seen pretty money savvy from that story. Let's learn
- 2:25Speaker 3: more about it. Tell me about your money story, Tell
- 2:27Speaker 3: me about your business.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Tell me about your life.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Yes, So I was a videographer for like ten years,
- 2:33Speaker 5: and I built that business from absolute scratch. I borrowed
- 2:36Speaker 5: money back then ten years ago from my mom to
- 2:40Speaker 5: buy all the equipment that I needed. I basically worked
- 2:43Speaker 5: for free for like a year and a half, built
- 2:45Speaker 5: up a little bit of a name in the videography world,
- 2:47Speaker 5: smashed it for ten years, bought a house, car, had kids.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Look at you.
- 2:52Speaker 5: We did it. We did incredible. I'm very proud of
- 2:55Speaker 5: what we achieved. Then my husband's also like a video editor,
- 2:58Speaker 5: so it just really flowed really well. Then I had
- 3:02Speaker 5: this idea from being a videographer to start this new
- 3:06Speaker 5: business and I found a real, like real good niche
- 3:10Speaker 5: in the market, and I invented a product that literally
- 3:13Speaker 5: did not exist.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I love this, and you can be so like.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I don't want to be too pervy, because like these
- 3:18Speaker 3: are meant to be anonymous, But if you're comfy saying it,
- 3:21Speaker 3: I'm comfy sharing it. I don't want you to think
- 3:23Speaker 3: that you can't do a little shameless self promoted the
- 3:25Speaker 3: ses on the money community a little.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Bit of a self promot. Well, I basically invented the
- 3:30Speaker 5: world's first iPhone case for the built in fully tiltable
- 3:33Speaker 5: stand and it's designed content creators.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Yeah that's crazy.
- 3:38Speaker 5: How So it's literally like imagine a beautiful normal silicon
- 3:43Speaker 5: iPhone case, very trendy, lush, and then on the sides
- 3:48Speaker 5: is basically like a stand that swings forwards and that
- 3:52Speaker 5: so you can take any anger course three hundred and
- 3:54Speaker 5: sixty degrees around the phone. And it's built into the
- 3:57Speaker 5: case so you don't have to like use tripods or
- 3:59Speaker 5: like magnetic things that you're going to forget. Like it's
- 4:02Speaker 5: literally built and you prop it up anywhere, anytime. And
- 4:05Speaker 5: actually it was definitely designed with content creer. Oh my god,
- 4:08Speaker 5: look you're a little tripod thing. Yeah, I'll send you tripod.
- 4:12Speaker 4: No, no, no, I will buy one from you.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I'm not taking your free shit, thank you, though I
- 4:17Speaker 3: appreciate it. I'm holding up a very dodgy looking iPhone
- 4:20Speaker 3: stand that I sadly use.
- 4:23Speaker 4: On the daily.
- 4:24Speaker 5: I will. I've got you key a little.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Bit embarrassing, but it sounds like you have it sorted.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And yes, that's quite a niche, but like people want that.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Every man in his dog these days is becoming a
- 4:34Speaker 3: content creator, and you want the stuff in your pocket,
- 4:37Speaker 3: Like you don't want to be lugging around a tripod
- 4:40Speaker 3: and also I don't want to be seen carrying a tripod.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Everyone say it's like, you know, imagine a moment's happening,
- 4:46Speaker 5: like out with your kids or you're in the street,
- 4:48Speaker 5: or like, I was not that person that was going
- 4:50Speaker 5: to set up a tripod in the middle of the
- 4:52Speaker 5: street to capture myself.
- 4:53Speaker 4: And you're a videographer as well, so if anyone would have,
- 4:56Speaker 4: it would have been you.
- 4:56Speaker 5: That's it. And also like I'm like, I feel it's
- 5:00Speaker 5: nowadays like all this organic content that really converts and
- 5:03Speaker 5: that it tells a story and so if you take
- 5:06Speaker 5: five ten minutes to set up the shot, the moments
- 5:08Speaker 5: over like and actually I'm finding that lords of moms
- 5:11Speaker 5: are using it for like recipes or listening to podcasts or.
- 5:14Speaker 4: That's so smart.
- 5:15Speaker 3: I'm always propping my phone up on a drink so
- 5:18Speaker 3: that I can see my tiktoks while I do my
- 5:20Speaker 3: makeup doom scrolling.
- 5:22Speaker 5: It's perfect for that whatever you need to do. Like,
- 5:25Speaker 5: it's a really good invention and I'm so proud of it,
- 5:28Speaker 5: but it has well done.
- 5:30Speaker 4: I'm so excited for you.
- 5:33Speaker 5: It's definitely it's cost us. Oh my god, we're more
- 5:37Speaker 5: than what we ever imagined.
- 5:39Speaker 4: And it's always the way with business, isn't it.
- 5:41Speaker 5: It's a lot.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. So tell me a bit more. So
- 5:45Speaker 3: you've still started your business. But what are you and
- 5:47Speaker 3: your partner doing right now for work? And what amount
- 5:50Speaker 3: of money are you earning?
- 5:51Speaker 5: Yeah, so at the moment, obviously we launched officially launched
- 5:54Speaker 5: our company two weeks ago, so obviously we're getting sales
- 5:58Speaker 5: from that. We'll get into that.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I'm sure you're already getting sales from this product.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yeah, we're getting like stop hair coverage, like six to
- 6:05Speaker 5: eight a day at the minute.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Stop hair.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Is that good?
- 6:08Speaker 4: I'm so proud of you, and I've had nothing to
- 6:10Speaker 4: do with this. It's that good.
- 6:12Speaker 3: What do you mean is that good? Most people launch
- 6:15Speaker 3: their small business and have no sales.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Well, you know, you see all these success stories and
- 6:21Speaker 5: I'm on TikTok and we slow down on twenty four
- 6:23Speaker 5: hours and I'm like, oh my god, is this good?
- 6:25Speaker 5: Is it not?
- 6:25Speaker 4: No, that's not normal. That's not normal.
- 6:27Speaker 3: And you know what I've found over the years is
- 6:30Speaker 3: I see that content it's a little bit click baity
- 6:33Speaker 3: and you look at their stuff and you go, that
- 6:35Speaker 3: can't be right. And I'm such a skeptic, right, like
- 6:37Speaker 3: I will snoop on you, like not you pe particularly,
- 6:40Speaker 3: but like I'll snoop on stuff. If you're big noting
- 6:42Speaker 3: yourself on TikTok, you've opened yourself up for me to
- 6:45Speaker 3: absolutely look through your website. Sorry you did that to yourselves,
- 6:48Speaker 3: And I go, you didn't sell out in the first thing.
- 6:51Speaker 3: In fact, you've quote launched six times, Like what is
- 6:54Speaker 3: going on here? People just want that, And there is
- 6:58Speaker 3: this like it's like a I don't know, bandwag anything.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Like if you tell someone, oh my god, we sold out,
- 7:04Speaker 3: they automatically feel like they missed out. So it's also
- 7:06Speaker 3: a marketing strategy, like I have seen people put like
- 7:10Speaker 3: even on their website.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Right. So let's let's say you have like fifty.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Phone cases in stock or whatever you know that, but
- 7:16Speaker 3: you don't put fifty there. You say that you only
- 7:18Speaker 3: have five left, and then when people are at checkout,
- 7:20Speaker 3: they go, oh shit, there's only five left. I need
- 7:23Speaker 3: to check out quickly. And it's just these marketing tactics
- 7:27Speaker 3: that put more pressure on the seller. But then as
- 7:29Speaker 3: a small business owning yourself. You're probably looking at you know,
- 7:32Speaker 3: I don't think there are many competitors for you, but
- 7:34Speaker 3: you could look at other like phone case companies. You're thinking,
- 7:36Speaker 3: oh my god, they're selling out so quickly. That might
- 7:38Speaker 3: not be true. So that's why we need to just
- 7:41Speaker 3: stick in our own lane and just like put the
- 7:44Speaker 3: blinkers on, especially when you launch bit sorry getting that
- 7:47Speaker 3: many sales when you're two weeks old, Go in my
- 7:50Speaker 3: business Bible community and ask them how long did it
- 7:53Speaker 3: take you to sell a product? And so many of
- 7:56Speaker 3: them are going to be like, babe, months months I
- 7:58Speaker 3: launched and I had one. It was my mom, Like
- 8:01Speaker 3: that happens so often. You are doing so I'm so
- 8:05Speaker 3: excited for you.
- 8:06Speaker 5: That makes me feel so much better. Yeah, it's been
- 8:09Speaker 5: It has been quite like a rough two weeks obviously,
- 8:11Speaker 5: just I think expectation versus reality. I think the pressure
- 8:16Speaker 5: and hitting me of like how much we borrowed, how
- 8:19Speaker 5: much we poll and it's not going to get paid
- 8:21Speaker 5: back of the night, and the people that I have
- 8:23Speaker 5: borrowed from, like my family, they are sore understanding of that.
- 8:26Speaker 5: I think it's like these awn really unrealistic expectations I've
- 8:30Speaker 5: put on myself.
- 8:31Speaker 3: That always always, so small business owners, you've got to
- 8:34Speaker 3: be a little bit de Lulu. But like anything that
- 8:37Speaker 3: you can think about negatively, you can think about positively
- 8:40Speaker 3: as well, Like it's an active choice. So like instead
- 8:43Speaker 3: of going, oh my god, we owe so much money.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Oh my god, Like why can't we just be delusional
- 8:47Speaker 3: about the sales? Oh my god, I've got six sales.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I reckon next week, I could do double. Like, let's
- 8:51Speaker 3: just step into delulu a little bit, because right now
- 8:54Speaker 3: you're just manifesting the worst.
- 8:56Speaker 4: That's not what we do, not in this house.
- 8:58Speaker 5: I hear, I hear you. That is very true. So
- 9:01Speaker 5: we literally launched two weeks ago. And then so I'm
- 9:05Speaker 5: a videographer, like I was saying, So basically, I'm trying
- 9:08Speaker 5: to do maybe between two and four jobs a month
- 9:13Speaker 5: or videography. I used to do a ridiculous amount, but
- 9:16Speaker 5: now I'm like trying to limit myself because my business
- 9:19Speaker 5: needs a lot of attention. So I get about throw
- 9:23Speaker 5: it between three and four thousand a day from videography.
- 9:26Speaker 5: So if I do that, say two to four times
- 9:28Speaker 5: a month, that's definitely enough for us to kind of
- 9:30Speaker 5: put food on the table.
- 9:32Speaker 4: That's incredible. How good.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Yeah, that's really great. Yeah, Like I shop for some
- 9:37Speaker 5: awesome brands this week and I love that. So it's
- 9:40Speaker 5: for me, it's like, it's not hard work going back
- 9:43Speaker 5: to something that I love and I know that it's
- 9:45Speaker 5: going to take a bit of time to build up
- 9:46Speaker 5: this new one. And my husband he does contracts with
- 9:50Speaker 5: different people, and he like edits podcasts, so he edits
- 9:53Speaker 5: exercise classes and so he brings in enough to kind
- 9:57Speaker 5: of cover the mortgage and a bit of food type
- 9:59Speaker 5: of thing.
- 10:00Speaker 4: And you're still able to build your business on the side.
- 10:02Speaker 4: I love it. And you have two babies.
- 10:04Speaker 5: Two babies, yeah, too young, So you're.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Not busy at all. You've got not much going on.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm pretty churely, you know, there's I find a
- 10:10Speaker 5: lot of space and time. Yeah.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I love that.
- 10:13Speaker 3: So tell me about your big money goals, Like what
- 10:17Speaker 3: does that look like moving into the future. Are they
- 10:19Speaker 3: mainly business focused? Are they lifestyle? Are they retirement? I
- 10:22Speaker 3: don't know what page are you on.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I think for me it's definitely lifestyle. I really
- 10:29Speaker 5: want to build this business up, hire the right people,
- 10:32Speaker 5: and the truth is just literally be able to travel
- 10:35Speaker 5: with my babies and my family like that is like
- 10:38Speaker 5: that for me is the ultimate you know, like going,
- 10:41Speaker 5: not not traveling like a Nike he or a night
- 10:42Speaker 5: they're like going somewhere for six months and immersing ourselves
- 10:46Speaker 5: working as well, you know, like online and doing it.
- 10:49Speaker 5: But for me, it would be to take my babies
- 10:51Speaker 5: around the world is like my ultimate dream.
- 10:54Speaker 4: I love that.
- 10:55Speaker 3: And tell me a little bit more about your babies.
- 10:57Speaker 3: How old are they.
- 10:58Speaker 5: We've got a one year old and three year old.
- 11:00Speaker 4: I'll stop it. So you've got actual baby and you're
- 11:04Speaker 4: starting a bit.
- 11:05Speaker 5: One of them is still breastfeed, which is really intense
- 11:08Speaker 5: because obviously she's just a bit of a booby fingd
- 11:12Speaker 5: that's all she wants. And my eldest is I mean
- 11:16Speaker 5: like a tornad or in a three year old's body.
- 11:18Speaker 5: He is just, oh my god, the energy, the everything
- 11:23Speaker 5: is big and heightened with him. So yeah, it's quite intense.
- 11:26Speaker 5: We have quite an intense We've got ducks, chickens, dogs,
- 11:28Speaker 5: we've got rabbits, We've got Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 4: You're living my actual dream. And also sorry, props to you, mum.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Breastfeeding for more than a year like that is rough. Like,
- 11:39Speaker 4: don't get me wrong, special but rough.
- 11:41Speaker 5: It's rough. But when we're going to New York actually
- 11:43Speaker 5: next week, so when I get back, I'm weaning. I'm done,
- 11:46Speaker 5: like I'm doing it for flights, doing it for all.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I was about to say, if I had a holiday
- 11:50Speaker 3: coming up and I was still breastfeeding, I would not
- 11:52Speaker 3: be giving up breastfeeding yet. Sorry, that is also a
- 11:54Speaker 3: secret weapon. Yeah, your genius. What are you going to
- 11:57Speaker 3: New York for?
- 11:58Speaker 5: My company is sponsoring the over there. And also I'm
- 12:01Speaker 5: going to Female Founder World.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Stop it.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Jasmine's my favorite.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I was hanging out with her last week and recorded
- 12:08Speaker 3: a podcast episode with her.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Oh my god, I saw fun girl Jasmine like I
- 12:13Speaker 5: saw fun Girl her. I'm so excited.
- 12:16Speaker 4: She's so cool. Oh my god, she's so cool. She's
- 12:19Speaker 4: just the coolest.
- 12:19Speaker 3: I love it, and I love Female Founder World, and
- 12:21Speaker 3: I can't believe you're going all the way over there.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I'm going to message her and let her know that
- 12:25Speaker 3: one of my She's on the Money community members is going,
- 12:28Speaker 3: because that's crazy.
- 12:29Speaker 4: I would love to go.
- 12:30Speaker 5: You should come with me. Let's just go.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Oh, I wish you should see my calendar, like I
- 12:36Speaker 3: wish so before I.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Agree to flights to New York.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Let's take a really quick break because on the flip side,
- 12:42Speaker 3: what we're going to do is, I want to talk
- 12:44Speaker 3: more about this investment that you've made in your company
- 12:46Speaker 3: and how you crowdsourced that through your friends and family.
- 12:49Speaker 3: I want to talk about more debt and then best
- 12:51Speaker 3: and most money habits. So guys don't go anywhere, all right,
- 12:58Speaker 3: money drivest We are back, and I want to talk
- 13:00Speaker 3: about investment. You said in your message in you were like,
- 13:04Speaker 3: you know, we lost seventeen thousand dollars to a sourcing agency,
- 13:08Speaker 3: had to take it a loan on our home, and
- 13:09Speaker 3: then turned to family and somehow managed to raise two
- 13:12Speaker 3: hundred grand. Can you tell me more about that process
- 13:14Speaker 3: because that sounds really stressful.
- 13:16Speaker 5: Yeah, slightly stressful. So we started this process. We got
- 13:20Speaker 5: kind of promised the world from a sourcing agency. So
- 13:24Speaker 5: the sourcing agency was supposed to basically help us with
- 13:27Speaker 5: the product, get it through to finding us a manufacturer,
- 13:31Speaker 5: getting it produced. Everything like that long, long, long story,
- 13:34Speaker 5: short that never happened. We lost seventeen thousand dollars. We
- 13:38Speaker 5: lost a year and a half in this game, which
- 13:40Speaker 5: is such a long time like we could have had
- 13:43Speaker 5: this done a long time ago. We cut ties with
- 13:46Speaker 5: them and literally hired my neighbor who helped us source
- 13:51Speaker 5: the entire thing. And so basically the money side of
- 13:54Speaker 5: things was, we had eight thousand dollars saved. We were
- 13:58Speaker 5: going to maybe buy second property or try and do
- 14:00Speaker 5: something like do up the house, do something with it.
- 14:03Speaker 5: Then I had this idea. We put eighty thousand dollars.
- 14:06Speaker 5: I think it's more about like one hundred maybe of
- 14:08Speaker 5: our own money. Now, yeah, eighty thousand dollars we put
- 14:12Speaker 5: down and then found out I was pregnant two weeks later,
- 14:16Speaker 5: then literally took out one hundred thousand dollars on our
- 14:20Speaker 5: house from like the equity hour broker helped us get that.
- 14:24Speaker 5: Then we are so ridiculously blessed that we both have
- 14:29Speaker 5: a set of parents that believe wholeheartedly in us and
- 14:32Speaker 5: what we do.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Oh, I love this. Everybody deserves that.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Everybody deserves that. And they're both I wouldn't say we're
- 14:40Speaker 5: from wealthy families, but they're both they okay, do you
- 14:43Speaker 5: know what I mean? They're stable. One of them's at
- 14:44Speaker 5: my partner's parents are retired, and they're like houses paid off,
- 14:48Speaker 5: they're good and my parents are separated, and my mum's
- 14:52Speaker 5: in a good space like financially and she they both
- 14:56Speaker 5: lent us a good amount of money to help us
- 14:59Speaker 5: reach this goal. We need it.
- 15:01Speaker 3: That's so good And can I be real perfect? What
- 15:06Speaker 3: type of investment? So, like, you've said you own a
- 15:09Speaker 3: company and you've invented the world's first Like what is it?
- 15:13Speaker 3: It says on your website. I've got it up now.
- 15:14Speaker 3: I've been stalking you while you're talking. It says, the
- 15:16Speaker 3: world's first iPhone case with a built in, fully tiltable
- 15:19Speaker 3: stand for creators, TikTokers and UGC Wizards. It's a pocket
- 15:23Speaker 3: sized superhero in your phone. I'm sorry, they're really flipping cute,
- 15:27Speaker 3: Like they are so cute you will write, But tell
- 15:31Speaker 3: me how much does that like for me? That I'm
- 15:34Speaker 3: looking at this business and I'm like, hold on, that
- 15:37Speaker 3: feels like a big investment because you're not just doing
- 15:40Speaker 3: one product and then shipping it out.
- 15:41Speaker 4: You've got multiple colors.
- 15:43Speaker 3: You probably have multiple phone cases because like everybody's got
- 15:48Speaker 3: a different style, size phone.
- 15:50Speaker 4: You can't just do one. What's that look like?
- 15:53Speaker 5: Yeah, so Lung's began. This is super mass that you
- 15:56Speaker 5: can work out really quickly. Basically every time up or
- 15:59Speaker 5: really an iPhone. Let's say they release a fifteen series,
- 16:02Speaker 5: there's four sizes, and each time we get a different size,
- 16:07Speaker 5: we have to pay thirteen thousand dollars per mold. Then
- 16:10Speaker 5: you have MQ's per collor per size, so you're looking
- 16:14Speaker 5: at about twenty thousand dollars per size like fifteen fifteen
- 16:20Speaker 5: pro fifteen probats. It's so costly. And then because we've
- 16:24Speaker 5: invented something that literally didn't exist, it's not like drop shipping.
- 16:27Speaker 5: I can't just like chuckle over one in common. And
- 16:30Speaker 5: also the mechanism in here is tiny, so to get
- 16:34Speaker 5: the it seems like nothing like people like, yeah, you've
- 16:37Speaker 5: put some like a little stand on a phone. I'm like,
- 16:39Speaker 5: get that mechanism working. Like we had to pay like
- 16:42Speaker 5: to keep it slimlin, Yeah, to keep it slim light,
- 16:44Speaker 5: to keep the resistance like it's got a good amount
- 16:46Speaker 5: of resistance. It's been the biggest eye opener. It was
- 16:50Speaker 5: so expensive, so much more than we ever planned. And
- 16:53Speaker 5: I literally just had to ask my family for more
- 16:55Speaker 5: money two days ago because we need to get the
- 16:57Speaker 5: iPhone seventeen series out. That they've just really.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and they basically relates a new iPhone every year,
- 17:02Speaker 3: now don't they. So like that's got to be something
- 17:04Speaker 3: that you've got to predict and go, okay, cool and
- 17:08Speaker 3: creators are crazy.
- 17:09Speaker 4: They always have the newest iPhone.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Absolutely, yeah, like how annoying. How annoying, but also how cool?
- 17:15Speaker 3: Like is that something that you foresaw when you started
- 17:18Speaker 3: the journey? Like has this been like you're like I
- 17:21Speaker 3: knew that would happen or were you like, oh far out,
- 17:23Speaker 3: sorry forgot to think about that.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Yeah, look, we kind of did. I think that we
- 17:27Speaker 5: maybe underestimated how much each mold would cost, and we
- 17:30Speaker 5: kind of underestimated. We just underestimated everything. I think we
- 17:36Speaker 5: never done anything like this before and it has been yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 5: incredibly educational, put it that way. But yeah, yeah, now
- 17:44Speaker 5: we fully get it and now we all estimate everything.
- 17:47Speaker 5: You know, we knew that Apple were going to bring
- 17:49Speaker 5: out a new iPhone every year. It's a pro andercn
- 17:52Speaker 5: because people come back every year, but we also have
- 17:55Speaker 5: to spend x amount per year to get the molds
- 17:57Speaker 5: made and the minimum molder quantity done, so is bit
- 18:00Speaker 5: of a pra under con you know. But yeah, it
- 18:03Speaker 5: was blonde.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Hey, and do you so I'm assuming that basically all
- 18:07Speaker 3: your investing money and any free cash flow is going
- 18:10Speaker 3: into this so you're not investing in any other way,
- 18:13Speaker 3: shape or form. Just I'm assuming because you said, oh,
- 18:15Speaker 3: we had to ask family for money, Like, do you
- 18:17Speaker 3: know what I mean? Is that the right thing? To
- 18:20Speaker 3: assume that basically all your cash is just going towards
- 18:22Speaker 3: this business.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Everything it's either pair the mortgage, buy food, or put
- 18:26Speaker 5: it into our business. Yeah?
- 18:27Speaker 3: Yeah, fair, fair, And tell me a little bit more
- 18:30Speaker 3: about the debt. So you know, you've managed to raise
- 18:33Speaker 3: two hundred grand to build the business up without investors.
- 18:36Speaker 3: But how are you managing that? Because I'm often really
- 18:39Speaker 3: apprehensive of raising money and capital with family because it
- 18:41Speaker 3: can be really scary. It sounds like you've got a
- 18:43Speaker 3: super supportive family and like it works for you. But
- 18:46Speaker 3: like how you tracking that debt? How like do you
- 18:49Speaker 3: have a repayment plan? What other debts have you got?
- 18:52Speaker 3: Because like, I'm just so pervy.
- 18:54Speaker 5: No, please, I love it. I feel like I'm like
- 18:56Speaker 5: this in other areas of people's lives. I okay, So basically,
- 19:00Speaker 5: the one hundred thousand dollars on the house we pay
- 19:03Speaker 5: interest on per month, and so we pay I think
- 19:06Speaker 5: about five hundred dollars interest per month on that hundred
- 19:11Speaker 5: grand as well as the mortgage, and basically as soon
- 19:16Speaker 5: as we put money into that offset account, that will
- 19:18Speaker 5: go down. So we were not too phased about that
- 19:21Speaker 5: at the minute. Like, that's quite an all right deal
- 19:23Speaker 5: for us. Family, bless their little hearts. Haven't asked for
- 19:27Speaker 5: any repayments. They're like, get yourself sorted, get yourselves going. Yeah.
- 19:32Speaker 5: My dad's like, I kind of see this as you know,
- 19:35Speaker 5: a little bit of a longer term thing to me
- 19:37Speaker 5: and my mum are really close. She's actually our first hire,
- 19:39Speaker 5: unpaid of course at the moment, but she handles all
- 19:42Speaker 5: of our finances, so she'll be able to let me
- 19:45Speaker 5: know when we can pay her and she'll.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Be like, by the way, you owe me a whole salary,
- 19:49Speaker 4: that's right.
- 19:51Speaker 5: And again, yeah, my partner's parents same type of thing,
- 19:54Speaker 5: Like I don't. We're very close with our family. They
- 19:57Speaker 5: haven't given us any terms, which I guess for some
- 20:00Speaker 5: people might feel really scary, but I think that we're.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Very everybody's different, right, there's like quote the textbook right
- 20:07Speaker 3: way you should do this, and then there's the way
- 20:09Speaker 3: that works for you, and they're all different. Like I
- 20:11Speaker 3: can't come on here and say like, well, you should
- 20:13Speaker 3: have done it differently.
- 20:14Speaker 4: It's just not going to work. Like your parents would
- 20:16Speaker 4: probably be like, oh well, I don't want to sign anything.
- 20:18Speaker 3: I was just happy to support you while you're making
- 20:20Speaker 3: it so complicated money direst Like everybody is different, and
- 20:24Speaker 3: I think that that's the beautiful thing about sharing these
- 20:26Speaker 3: money stories because I get to learn about you and
- 20:29Speaker 3: learn about what works for you. But then on the
- 20:31Speaker 3: flip side, right, like, let's pretend my sister comes to
- 20:33Speaker 3: me and wants to start a business, because I've been
- 20:36Speaker 3: through business so much because that's like my bread and butter,
- 20:39Speaker 3: and I've set people up, I've had failed partnerships. I've
- 20:42Speaker 3: seen lots of other people fail their partnerships. Even if
- 20:46Speaker 3: it was my sister and I adore her and I
- 20:47Speaker 3: trust her, at the end of the world, i'd be like,
- 20:48Speaker 3: sign here, Mike, whereas.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Other people aren't like that, and that's so fine.
- 20:53Speaker 3: But again, there's no right, there's no wrong, and it
- 20:56Speaker 3: doesn't really matter.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Tell me a bit about the house.
- 21:00Speaker 3: So you've got one hundred K as a loan against
- 21:02Speaker 3: the house for the business.
- 21:04Speaker 4: But what type of mortgage are you still sitting on?
- 21:06Speaker 5: So got our house for seven hundred and forty thousand,
- 21:10Speaker 5: and we put one hundred thousand down. Oh good, Yeah,
- 21:13Speaker 5: so we're paying off six hundred and forty thousand. I
- 21:15Speaker 5: think that's at the minute. With the interest rates gone,
- 21:18Speaker 5: I think we're on about like nine hundred one thousand
- 21:20Speaker 5: dollars a week or something for our mortgage. And that
- 21:24Speaker 5: is obviously that feels expensive to us now. It didn't
- 21:27Speaker 5: when I was full time videographer. We kind of breezed
- 21:30Speaker 5: through it. We were very I felt very abundant, and
- 21:33Speaker 5: it's but it has been two years now where we're
- 21:35Speaker 5: just like, oh my god, I'm so sick of being
- 21:37Speaker 5: skinned Like it's yeah.
- 21:40Speaker 3: It's hard, and it's like a sacrifice you make in
- 21:43Speaker 3: order to invest into a business. Let me be a
- 21:46Speaker 3: little bit more pervy. When you were a videographer, what
- 21:48Speaker 3: were you making per year? Like, what were your tax returns?
- 21:51Speaker 4: Looking like?
- 21:52Speaker 5: Yeah, we were I think I was doing about two
- 21:54Speaker 5: hundred and fifty between two hundred and twenty two hundred
- 21:56Speaker 5: and fifty kre.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Yeah, that's so good.
- 22:00Speaker 3: You're an icon and I mean, I don't want to
- 22:02Speaker 3: say that it won't work out because I think your
- 22:03Speaker 3: business is sick, but like it's just so nice that
- 22:06Speaker 3: you've built up that reputation in the industry. And I
- 22:08Speaker 3: have no doubt if you're like, you know what, I
- 22:10Speaker 3: really need to turn this videographer stuff back on the
- 22:13Speaker 3: idea that you could turn back to having an income
- 22:16Speaker 3: of two hundred grand.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Does that make you.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Feel really secure in the decisions you're making at the moment?
- 22:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it does. But I'm a very black
- 22:24Speaker 5: or white person sometimes, so I'm likely to I've started this,
- 22:28Speaker 5: I will finish this, I will make.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no, same same. But it must be nice
- 22:32Speaker 3: to know that you've got the skills.
- 22:34Speaker 5: At night knowing if she hit the fine, we will.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll be all right. We'll still
- 22:40Speaker 4: be able to pay a mortgage.
- 22:41Speaker 3: I'll still be able to get my kid's food on
- 22:43Speaker 3: the table, all of that stuff. Even though you are
- 22:45Speaker 3: being a bit skinned at the moment, is that something
- 22:48Speaker 3: that's starting to impact you, like mentally or physically, or
- 22:52Speaker 3: is that just like a I'm just so excited for
- 22:54Speaker 3: this business to take off, like but also it kind
- 22:56Speaker 3: of sucks not having some more financial freedom.
- 22:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I will say it's very up and down. Like
- 23:01Speaker 5: there are some days where it doesn't bother me at all,
- 23:03Speaker 5: and I'm like, this is part of the journey, this
- 23:05Speaker 5: is part of our story, and you know, we talk
- 23:07Speaker 5: about it very openly as a family and different things
- 23:10Speaker 5: like that. But there are some days where like it
- 23:13Speaker 5: literally feels like somebody is sat on my chest and
- 23:17Speaker 5: I look at these little eyes watching me, and I think,
- 23:20Speaker 5: oh my god. I will be honest, like, it does
- 23:22Speaker 5: quite get to me sometimes. And I also think about
- 23:25Speaker 5: our family and how much they trust us and how
- 23:27Speaker 5: much they've lent us, and it does make me sometimes
- 23:31Speaker 5: feel quite anxious. But then I get feedback about the product,
- 23:36Speaker 5: and I get feedback from people, and then my mum
- 23:39Speaker 5: will just text me, I believe in you, baby, You've
- 23:41Speaker 5: got this, And then I'm like, god, I do I do?
- 23:43Speaker 5: You know? And it goes up and down.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Like that stop it And like I obviously the second
- 23:48Speaker 3: you told me your business, I was like, I'm going
- 23:50Speaker 3: to google this and it's beautiful, Like it's not just beautiful,
- 23:53Speaker 3: but it's like practical, Like I feel like if you
- 23:56Speaker 3: just come out with phone cases I would have been like,
- 23:57Speaker 3: oh cute, they're really nice. I hope it goes really well.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Like sorry, I'm always propping my phone up on something.
- 24:02Speaker 3: All of my friends are always propping their phone up
- 24:04Speaker 3: on something Like this just makes sense. So I'm like,
- 24:07Speaker 3: why isn't what do you mean you did this first?
- 24:10Speaker 3: Like what do you mean someone else hasn't thought about this?
- 24:12Speaker 4: Like how good?
- 24:13Speaker 5: And our goal as well is to be like a
- 24:15Speaker 5: full ecosystem for content creers. So we're working on our
- 24:18Speaker 5: second product, we're working on audio or like, we don't
- 24:22Speaker 5: want to just be a phone case company. We basically
- 24:24Speaker 5: want to be for anybody that creates content you need anything,
- 24:28Speaker 5: like we are specifically designed for you type of thing.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I adore. What are next steps?
- 24:33Speaker 3: So let's say this goes really well and then all
- 24:35Speaker 3: of a sudden you've got some additional cash flow, Like
- 24:38Speaker 3: we're paying back our business loans.
- 24:40Speaker 4: That's all fun. Are the other products in the works?
- 24:42Speaker 3: Like don't tell me because we can't have other people
- 24:44Speaker 3: stealing those ideas? Or are you like no, no, no,
- 24:47Speaker 3: Like we're just in this one silo and we're going
- 24:49Speaker 3: to just get really good at this, Like what's the
- 24:50Speaker 3: plan there.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Is the most epic second product in the work. I
- 24:56Speaker 5: can't say it better than the first one, but I will.
- 24:59Speaker 5: I think it's on. Like people are gonna be like,
- 25:01Speaker 5: what like the way we've connected, Like, oh, it's creme
- 25:05Speaker 5: de la creme, Like you're gonna.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Look, oh, I love these I can't wait.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I'm gonna ask offline guys. You don't get to know,
- 25:11Speaker 3: but I'm sure as hell finding out. I love this
- 25:13Speaker 3: so much. Now let's move away from like getting all
- 25:16Speaker 3: of this. I want to know, like, you don't get
- 25:19Speaker 3: to this point without having some good money habits.
- 25:22Speaker 4: What do you think is your best.
- 25:23Speaker 5: I don't personally think that I'm good with money, but
- 25:27Speaker 5: what I will say is the only thing that I
- 25:28Speaker 5: can think of that comes to mind is I always
- 25:32Speaker 5: check my balance, Like I check it like a good
- 25:34Speaker 5: two or three times a day, like I just don't
- 25:36Speaker 5: know a while. Sometimes I'll just check just look, okay,
- 25:38Speaker 5: yeah good. Then if things have gone down quickly, then
- 25:41Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, hold on a minute, I need to
- 25:42Speaker 5: check on that. And that's when I remember to like
- 25:45Speaker 5: cancel a subscription that I'm not using, or you know,
- 25:48Speaker 5: I kind of see these little things so I'll say,
- 25:50Speaker 5: we can't get this anymore because it's just adding up
- 25:53Speaker 5: so much. Like I do check it a lot. I
- 25:55Speaker 5: think that would be my only good habit.
- 25:57Speaker 3: I think that's a good thing. But I also won
- 26:00Speaker 3: is that impacting you? Are you stressed about money so
- 26:03Speaker 3: you check all the time? Like is this something that
- 26:06Speaker 3: maybe isn't as productive as.
- 26:07Speaker 5: It could be? Well, you know what I think, Looking
- 26:10Speaker 5: even back to when we were quite financially free before kids,
- 26:14Speaker 5: and when I was just a videographer and building all
- 26:17Speaker 5: that up, I think I still checked quite a lot
- 26:19Speaker 5: then as well. And I think it's almost like more
- 26:22Speaker 5: of a soothing thing when you do have the money
- 26:24Speaker 5: in the car. I'm like, oh, I'm good, I'm saying,
- 26:26Speaker 5: And maybe it is a little bit more of an
- 26:28Speaker 5: anxiety think. And also I do I have to watch
- 26:30Speaker 5: it now because there is such little of it. I
- 26:33Speaker 5: do have to make sure are we on top of this?
- 26:35Speaker 5: Are we on top of that? So I do think yeah,
- 26:38Speaker 5: probably a pro and a negative. I would say yeah totally.
- 26:41Speaker 3: I was like, oh, that's a good thing, Like I'm
- 26:43Speaker 3: glad you're across it, But like, is that impacting your
- 26:45Speaker 3: mental health in any way? Because we just don't want Yeah,
- 26:49Speaker 3: we don't want you to be stressed about money, but
- 26:52Speaker 3: I mean at the moment, I would.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Be too, Like you're in the startup phases.
- 26:55Speaker 3: We've just got stuff to do, like we're always looking
- 26:58Speaker 3: and I feel like once you get further into business
- 27:00Speaker 3: then it does pull back a little bit. But I
- 27:02Speaker 3: was exactly the same. That's why I was like, how's
- 27:03Speaker 3: your mental health because mom wasn't great.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Yeah, there's been a few sleepless nights. Let's just put
- 27:08Speaker 5: it that way.
- 27:09Speaker 4: But you know what, it's part and puzzle of the journey.
- 27:11Speaker 3: I'm so sorry if you were sleeping through every single night,
- 27:15Speaker 3: I would assume that you just don't care enough, Like
- 27:18Speaker 3: this stuff is hard at the beginning.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Now, tell me, what do you think your worst money
- 27:22Speaker 4: habit is?
- 27:23Speaker 5: My worst money habit is definitely spending money on the kids.
- 27:27Speaker 5: Like I'm such a sucker for toys and like little things,
- 27:32Speaker 5: and I think that's like tied into a guilt thing
- 27:34Speaker 5: as well. You know, we spend so much time and
- 27:36Speaker 5: energy on the business.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you're like, you can have another book. It is fine.
- 27:39Speaker 5: It's fine, exactly, and you know, my little but I
- 27:42Speaker 5: love this card. I'm like you can get it, buddy.
- 27:43Speaker 5: Like I feel like sometimes that's probably my worst money habit.
- 27:47Speaker 5: And I also really want to teach him that he
- 27:48Speaker 5: can't have everything that he wants as well.
- 27:51Speaker 4: You know, he's also three, so he doesn't get that yet.
- 27:53Speaker 4: I don't know. Oh, it's really rough. It's funny.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I was actually talking to a money diarist last week
- 28:01Speaker 3: and she and I were saying the same thing, and
- 28:03Speaker 3: I was like, when I was not a mum, I
- 28:05Speaker 3: would like, you know, obviously give financial advice and be like, well,
- 28:08Speaker 3: this is your budget for this and that, and like
- 28:10Speaker 3: clients would say the same things like oh, I'm just
- 28:12Speaker 3: I'm so good with like my own budget, like I
- 28:14Speaker 3: don't blow it on treats for me, but I'm always
- 28:16Speaker 3: spending on the kids, like whether that's an ice cream
- 28:18Speaker 3: or a baby Chino or like another TOYR book or
- 28:21Speaker 3: a KMA.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Trip or whatever.
- 28:22Speaker 3: And I'd be like, oh, I'm thinking in the back
- 28:24Speaker 3: of my head, like when I'm doing my financial planning,
- 28:26Speaker 3: I'm like, no, I'm probably not like that, Like I'm
- 28:28Speaker 3: pretty good at saying no to additional things.
- 28:31Speaker 4: I'm a pushover.
- 28:32Speaker 3: I like the second I became a mom, like I
- 28:35Speaker 3: only have like what a nineteen twenty month old, I
- 28:38Speaker 3: can't remember.
- 28:39Speaker 4: And if he's like, mom, one more, I'm like, you
- 28:42Speaker 4: can have ten, you can have ten. Take my money,
- 28:45Speaker 4: you want ten?
- 28:45Speaker 5: Take heart?
- 28:46Speaker 4: Take my money? Do you want my whole wallet back?
- 28:48Speaker 4: Like I suck and just like his little face.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Like the other day we went to a cafe and
- 28:53Speaker 3: I ordered him a baby Chino because we've just gotten
- 28:55Speaker 3: into this and it had sprinkles on the top, and
- 28:59Speaker 3: like I was like, oh, I hid the marshmallow.
- 29:01Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 29:01Speaker 3: I feel like that's a relatable mum thing to do,
- 29:03Speaker 3: Like no marshmallow for you, Glen Coco, that's mum text.
- 29:05Speaker 4: And I put it down in front of him and
- 29:07Speaker 4: he goes, oh.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Wow, And I was like, this is why I do it,
- 29:10Speaker 3: Like you're just he's been grateful.
- 29:12Speaker 4: He was just so yep, that was worth the four
- 29:15Speaker 4: dollars I probably paid for that.
- 29:17Speaker 5: Like crazy, we're until they start saying things like oh,
- 29:20Speaker 5: you're the best mummy ever, Please mummy, because you're the
- 29:22Speaker 5: best mummy ever. Then you're like, okay, you can have it.
- 29:25Speaker 3: I feel like they have clocked manipulation, Like people say
- 29:31Speaker 3: that toddlers can't be manipulative because they don't understand. I reckon,
- 29:34Speaker 3: they've got it clocked NA totally money dirist. This has
- 29:38Speaker 3: been really beautiful. But at the start you said, look,
- 29:42Speaker 3: I'm a sea, but you're managing money pretty well. I
- 29:44Speaker 3: can say that you're still a little bit stressed about it.
- 29:47Speaker 3: We're in the startup phases of business. I get it.
- 29:49Speaker 3: What would it take to get you from this sea
- 29:51Speaker 3: that you said you were closer to an a Like?
- 29:54Speaker 3: What would you have to be doing? Is it just
- 29:57Speaker 3: about business success? Is it money management?
- 29:59Speaker 5: Like?
- 29:59Speaker 4: What what would it look like?
- 30:00Speaker 5: I think it would be a mixture of both. I
- 30:02Speaker 5: think if my business became a little bit more successful,
- 30:06Speaker 5: and I also think if I managed to plug any
- 30:10Speaker 5: holes in my boocket when it comes to the business, like,
- 30:13Speaker 5: I'm still very much figuring out, like how much does
- 30:15Speaker 5: it actually cost per product? Like what is the what
- 30:19Speaker 5: is my role as? What is my cost by acquisition?
- 30:21Speaker 5: Like I'm still don't know any of that. So I
- 30:23Speaker 5: think it will be a mixture of both. As the
- 30:25Speaker 5: business craws, as I learn more, I think I'll feel
- 30:28Speaker 5: a bit more in that ab bracket.
- 30:32Speaker 3: That's fair, but it feels like you're on track, So
- 30:35Speaker 3: that would you feel like you're like on the journey
- 30:37Speaker 3: or is there something that you significantly need to change
- 30:40Speaker 3: to get there?
- 30:41Speaker 5: No, I think I'm on the journey. I do. I
- 30:43Speaker 5: think I'm a smart chick, and I think.
- 30:46Speaker 3: I know you're a smart chick. I've just spent like
- 30:47Speaker 3: in the last half hour chatting with you. That was
- 30:49Speaker 3: obvious from the start.
- 30:50Speaker 5: My lost thank you. Well, yeah, I think I'm on
