- 0:00Welcome to the show, everybody!
- 0:01I'm Dangerous Zygos, here with DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell,
- 0:05and Dandy Market.
- 0:06And look, as the C.E.O.
- 0:07of Currency Development, I always look at the structure of the money first,
- 0:11and right now, the money is moving in a very specific direction.
- 0:15Atlantic Music Group's 10K Projects just backed a new Runway Records joint venture,
- 0:20and this isn't some vanity imprint play.
- 0:24Nah, this is different, Zygos.
- 0:2510K is looking at the scoreboard.
- 0:28Runway is coming in as a developmental hub with heavy data: over sixty million
- 0:33streams overall, three Top Ten records on the TikTok Top Fifty,
- 0:37and their artist Aziedoesntexist is pulling in over eight hundred thousand daily
- 0:43streams.
- 0:44"Everglades" hit number one on the Spotify Viral Chart.
- 0:49That is pure proof of concept before the ink even dried on the JV.
- 0:54Man, "Everglades" is a monster record, but we gotta talk about what a joint venture
- 0:58actually means for the artist on the ground compared to a traditional major signing.
- 1:03In a JV, Runway and 10K are splitting the risk and the bag,
- 1:08but Runway keeps the keys to the culture.
- 1:10The major label is basically outsourcing the street-level scouting because they
- 1:15can't buy taste, they can only fund it.
- 1:18Exactly, Calvin.
- 1:19I had to stay lit to survive, and in this game, survival means knowing who actually
- 1:26holds the leverage.
- 1:28With a traditional major deal, you get that big upfront machine,
- 1:32sure, but you lose clarity.
- 1:34You don't know who really owns the masters, the recoupment math is fuzzy,
- 1:38and you are locked in for years.
- 1:41But a JV-backed boutique like Runway?
- 1:44If they have a track record, does that actually give the artist more leverage,
- 1:48or is it just a shinier trap?
- 1:50It only gives you leverage if you bring your own infrastructure to the table first.
- 1:54In hip-hop, the legends who lasted--the ones who built empires--built their name
- 1:59before anyone else could write a check.
- 2:02It is about that discipline, what I call knowledge of self before the deal.
- 2:07If you do not know who you are and what your brand is worth before you walk into
- 2:11Atlantic's building, they will define it for you, and they will price it cheap.
- 2:16That's facts.
- 2:17The old-school grind wasn't "please sign me," it was "look at this movement I built,
- 2:22now how much are you going to pay to partner with it?"
- 2:25You gotta be undeniable on your own first.
- 2:29So let's get into the actual contracts, because this is where artists get hurt.
- 2:34If you are sitting across from a label, even a cool indie JV like Runway,
- 2:38you need to ask four killer questions.
- 2:41Number one: Who owns the masters, and for how long?
- 2:45Number two: What is the term length?
- 2:48Number three: Is there a reversion clause--meaning, do those masters come back to me
- 2:54after ten or fifteen years?
- 2:56And number four: What is the marketing commitment in actual,
- 3:00written dollars, not just "reasonable efforts"?
- 3:03And you gotta know where the money is flowing from!
- 3:05Is the check coming from Runway, from 10K, or is it passing through a distributor
- 3:10first?
- 3:11If you can't map the corporate parent-company stack, you do not understand the deal.
- 3:17Aziedoesntexist had eight hundred thousand daily streams *before* the deal.
- 3:21That data is a shield.
- 3:23When you have pre-signing momentum, the label isn't saving you from obscurity; they
- 3:27are buying into an ongoing business.
- 3:30But look, the data only gets you through the door.
- 3:33Virality is a spark, but sonic identity is the fireplace.
- 3:38A TikTok spike is cool, but if that sound doesn't translate into a loyal fan base
- 3:43that buys hard tickets to shows, buys merch, and streams the deep cuts of the
- 3:47catalog, that JV relationship is going to cold-dry real fast once the algorithm
- 3:53moves to the next trend.
- 3:55Man, that is the gospel right there.
- 3:57Touring, merch, direct-to-fan, content monetization--that has to grow independently
- 4:04of the label's marketing budget.
- 4:06A record deal should be one single stream of your income, not your entire life
- 4:10support machine.
- 4:12If the label decides to shelve your album, and your rent was depending on that
- 4:16advance, you already lost.
- 4:19Which brings us to the ultimate financial literacy test: publishing versus masters.
- 4:24I still meet artists pulling millions of views who do not know the difference
- 4:27between the composition royalty and the sound recording royalty.
- 4:31If you don't know your split sheets, your performance rights organizations,
- 4:35or how your mechanicals flow, you are leaving generational wealth on the table.
- 4:40Knowing your business inside and out is the modern version of knowledge of self.
- 4:45It's about turning that creative spark into an asset that feeds your kids' kids.
- 4:50Don't just sign for the moment, sign for the legacy.
- 4:54That's our time for today.
- 4:55Appreciate y'all locking in.
- 4:58I'm DJ Universe, with Dangerous Zygos, Calvin Blingwell, and Dandy Market.
- 5:04Keep building, keep reading those contracts, and we'll catch you on the next one.
