- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for March 12, 2026 Nagging is a warning sign, not just an annoyance.
- 0:07Another counterproductive marriage behavior is nagging.
- 0:10Nagging is the act of persistently, annoyingly, scolding or urging someone to
- 0:14complete a task, often characterized by constant, repetitive complaints or fault-finding.
- 0:20Like the tailgater who can't make the car ahead go faster, or the driver who
- 0:24speeds up to block someone passing,
- 0:26nagging is another behavior where our instincts work against our goal.
- 0:30The more you push, the less you get.
- 0:33Criticism and nagging are similar, but distinct enough to warrant separate coverage.
- 0:37As with criticism, nagging can be because of a real problem.
- 0:41Or it can be a way of expressing frustration that may have little or nothing
- 0:44to do with what you nag about.
- 0:46If nagging is how you express that you don't like the way things are,
- 0:49you need to find a new approach.
- 0:51Proxy grievances don't make you feel better and won't bring about change your
- 0:55marriage needs. But nagging can be the death of your marriage by a thousand cuts.
- 1:00Some folks learn nagging as a tactic. For others, it's a habit learned from
- 1:04a parent. Neither of these is good for a marriage.
- 1:07On the other hand, if what you're nagging about is hurting you or your marriage,
- 1:11then it needs to be dealt with.
- 1:13But if you have been working at that by nagging, your spouse has become immune to the issue.
- 1:17If you want to see change, you will need to change your approach.
- 1:20The most important change you need to make may be believing that you deserve
- 1:24to have your issue resolved.
- 1:26Often, nagging carries a good dose of resignation with it.
- 1:29As for approaching your spouse, one option would be to confess you have been
- 1:33nagging and that doing so has been wrong.
- 1:35Say you're going to try and deal with things better moving forward.
- 1:37Then bring up one issue you really want to change Explain why it's a problem
- 1:42for you And what you need to happen If you're on the receiving end of nagging
- 1:46Understand that unless it's a learned habit Nagging is an indication your spouse
- 1:50is unhappy What they nag about may seem minor And it may be unimportant,
- 1:55Nagging is how they express displeasure Perhaps they don't know a better way
- 1:59Or they're afraid to deal with whatever it is head on That fear is likely not
- 2:03about you But it still impacts you If you are nagged,
- 2:07please see it as a cry for help Then work to find out what the real issue might
- 2:11be It could be your spouse doesn't feel heard or respected So make efforts to
- 2:15hear what they say and do things they want done If you can't do something quickly,
- 2:20make a note to do it as soon as you can If doing the things your spouse has
- 2:24been nagging about brings no change,
- 2:26the issue is deeper How was your spouse hurt growing up or in a previous relationship?
- 2:30Are you hitting that wound? Can you reassure them in that area?
- 2:34If you can't resolve it, I'd suggest getting some help as a couple.
- 2:38Nagging is not just annoying. It's a warning sign you should not ignore.
- 2:42This is Paul reminding you that doing marriage well looks different for every couple.
