- 0:00David Friedman, BS: Hello, this is Dr.
- 0:00David Friedman, host of To Your Good Health Radio.
- 0:03What if the oldest health book in the world has been sitting
- 0:07on your shelf the whole time?
- 0:09No app, no biohacking gadget that costs more than your car payment,
- 0:13just a few thousand years of wisdom from the Bible that modern
- 0:18science is finally catching up to.
- 0:20Joining us is returning guest Jordan Rubin, who went from a healthy teenager
- 0:25to 104 pounds knocking on death's door.
- 0:28Written off by the medical system, he clawed his way back the old-fashioned
- 0:31way, through food, faith, and dirt.
- 0:34And he did it decades before gut health became that f-- hashtag that we see.
- 0:38And today he's planted nearly a million fruit trees, runs regenerative farms,
- 0:43and his new book, The Biblio Diet became an instant New York Times bestseller.
- 0:47In it, he asked a simple question: If Moses walked into your
- 0:50kitchen, what would he throw out?
- 0:53Don't go anywhere.
- 0:53Jordan Rubin is in the house to answer that question and
- 0:56more, and it all starts now.
- 1:09Our next guest is known as America's Biblical Health Coach.
- 1:12He's the New York Times bestselling author of 31 books, including the
- 1:16international hit, The Maker's Diet.
- 1:18His latest book, The Biblio Diet, was co-written with his friend Dr.
- 1:22Josh Axe, who's been on the show.
- 1:23And Jordan's the founder of Garden of Life, Beyond
- 1:26Organic, and Ancient Nutrition.
- 1:28All great products.
- 1:29I highly recommend them.
- 1:30And diagnosed with advanced Crohn's disease at 19 and given little hope,
- 1:35he recovered through a return to ancient biblically rooted nutrition,
- 1:40a journey that became his life's work.
- 1:42And he holds degrees in naturopathic medicine and certifications in
- 1:45nutrition and fitness, and he also has multiple patents in natural
- 1:49pharmaceuticals and supplements.
- 1:51He's a leader in the regenerative farming movement, operating Heal the
- 1:55Planet Farms in Tennessee and Missouri.
- 1:58Welcome back to the show, Jordan Rubin
- 2:00Jordan Rubin: Dr.
- 2:00Friedman, it is great to be here
- 2:02David Friedman, BS: Oh, it's so great to have you.
- 2:03Briefly take us back, I know some people didn't hear the last time.
- 2:06Talk to us real briefly, 19 years old, 104 pounds, what was the moment
- 2:10you stopped trusting the system and started literally trusting your gut?
- 2:14Jordan Rubin: Well, similar to you, I grew up in a health-aware home.
- 2:19As you know, you met my father probably, gosh, 30 years ago now.
- 2:22And so I understood a little bit about health principles, but I didn't
- 2:28own them, so to speak, until I went through my near-death experience.
- 2:32But in terms of conventional medicine as a family, we were not, I'll
- 2:36say, hospital or medication-minded.
- 2:39And so initially, when I experienced symptoms of digestive disease, we
- 2:43wanted to treat it naturally, but my situation was so advanced and
- 2:49acute that I did, undergo multiple hospitalizations, medications, et cetera.
- 2:54But in a way, I guess I'm blessed that those interventions didn't work
- 2:59because it caused me to look elsewhere.
- 3:01And I did visit 70 medical experts trying to get well.
- 3:05Ultimately, was only getting worse and worse with each
- 3:09international clinic I would visit.
- 3:11But, one man told me in 1996 that if I follow a health plan based on
- 3:18the Bible, proven through history, and confirmed by science, I can
- 3:21be well, and I had enough faith.
- 3:25He infused enough hope in me, and I went from Florida to
- 3:29California in a wheelchair.
- 3:31And three months later, sure enough, just like this man Bud Keith
- 3:35told me, I was working out on the beach in San Diego, California.
- 3:40I didn't have my old life back.
- 3:42I had a new life and a new passion to see the health of this nation and
- 3:46world transformed one life at a time.
- 3:50And that was approximately 30 years ago, which blows my mind.
- 3:55But yes.
- 3:56David Friedman, BS: definitely turned your mess into your message.
- 3:58I love it.
- 3:58And as I shared last time, I battled late, late onset Crohn's myself, so your
- 4:02story holds a special place in my heart.
- 4:04And, I remember asking my doctor how somebody perfectly healthy develops
- 4:08advanced Crohn's in their 50s.
- 4:09I was healthy, never been sick a day.
- 4:11And his answer floored me, Jordan.
- 4:13He said, "We don't care why.
- 4:15You'll need to get your colon removed and a lifetime on biologic infusions."
- 4:19And Jordan, when a doctor looks at patients in the eye and says,
- 4:22"We don't care why you're sick," isn't that the very definition of
- 4:25what's broken in modern medicine?
- 4:27Shouldn't the why be the primary focus?
- 4:29Jordan Rubin: yes, and I remember, similarly, David, as I lay
- 4:33in hospital beds or examine-- exam rooms, tables, etc.,
- 4:38I would look on the walls, and I'd see lots of degrees and diplomas,
- 4:44and I would hear things like, "This doctor is the number one
- 4:48gastroenterologist in this county," which I don't even know what that means.
- 4:51But I didn't care how much a particular doctor knew or how credentialed they were.
- 4:57All I cared about was someone saying, "Jordan, I've been where you are, and
- 5:02I have now conquered said condition."
- 5:06And I didn't find that, David, so I decided to become the first
- 5:10expert that I wish I could have spoken to instead of the seventieth.
- 5:15And so I've kind of lived my life since then trying to find solutions, creating
- 5:21content, information, but most of all, hope in people that have been diagnosed
- 5:26with quote-unquote, "incurable diseases."
- 5:29But, because God takes us from glory to glory His way, my battle with
- 5:35inflammatory bowel disease was not my only near-death experience, as
- 5:40I talk about in "The Biblio Diet."
- 5:42after being healed from Crohn's disease, starting companies, writing
- 5:46lots of books, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2008.
- 5:51And so, God got the chance to show off again, and really for the first time,
- 5:57even though this happened some 18 years ago, the first time I'm sharing my
- 6:04cancer-conquering journey is in "The Biblio Diet," which launched, last year.
- 6:08So it's been a exciting journey to help bring hope to an audience
- 6:14that is really the most hopeless.
- 6:16I would say having battled Crohn's colitis, that has
- 6:20become much more prevalent.
- 6:21You now know full well how debilitating a gut disease is.
- 6:26But there's something different about being diagnosed with
- 6:30cancer than any other illness.
- 6:32It's as much an emotional and spiritual disease as it is physical.
- 6:38And so a, a new part of my mission is to help give people hope that
- 6:43despite a diagnosis that the world considers terminal, you can be healed.
- 6:50And I'm proof of that, and so are many, who, by the way, are not counted in
- 6:55all the medical statistics that they espouse when you're diagnosed what I
- 7:01would call it, a prognosis of cursing
- 7:04David Friedman, BS: Yeah.
- 7:04You know, you hear that word incurable.
- 7:06I was told the same thing, and it's like, I love that you're saying that, "Hey,
- 7:09just put your hand, finger in your ears.
- 7:10Don't listen."
- 7:12The body is powerful, especially, you know, God created
- 7:14this, magnificent machine.
- 7:16We don't understand it, but God does.
- 7:18And if you just kind of look at the, the Bible and say, "H- here's what it says.
- 7:21Here's the blueprints," which you're doing, which is great.
- 7:23And you know, it's so funny, we look at the Physicians Desk
- 7:25Reference, Gray's Anatomy.
- 7:27Look in the Bible.
- 7:28I love that.
- 7:28And let's answer the question I started in the beginning of the show.
- 7:30If Moses were here today, what would the food laws look like?
- 7:35Jordan Rubin: Well, first and foremost, I'll call it the, deadly
- 7:38dozen, according to God's plan.
- 7:40And I'll give you the top three and one will not surprise you, one may.
- 7:45So, pork and shellfish and other detestable animals are not on the menu.
- 7:50That's based on Leviticus 11, Deuteronomy 14.
- 7:54Now, I know that there are arguments that there are portions of the New
- 7:59Testament where Peter had a dream and where Jesus declared all foods clean.
- 8:04But I can tell you that there is no evidence that Jesus or the
- 8:08disciples ever consumed any of this filth that we call food.
- 8:14And I'm also part of the regenerative farming movement, and I know
- 8:17people out there say, "Well, I raise my pigs regeneratively, and
- 8:21we catch shrimp in the ocean."
- 8:23But bottom line, God created these things to clean up the waste.
- 8:28And if you date back prior to Moses to Noah, there was a reason why seven pairs
- 8:34of quote-unquote clean animals went into the ark and one pair of unclean.
- 8:39God knew that we would be eating the clean animals, and those detestable
- 8:44animals were there to clean up the waste, and they are part of the ecosystem.
- 8:49They shouldn't be part of our diet.
- 8:50And one thing I like to say, David, to help people remember this, Biblical
- 8:54eating rule number one: thou shalt not eat anything that Jesus cast demons into.
- 9:01Now, if you're a Bible reader, you'll know that Jesus cast demons into a, I
- 9:06guess, herd of thousands of pigs, that they were then drowned in the water.
- 9:10us Jews, we don't like to waste food or money, so I don't
- 9:14think Jesus would have either.
- 9:15But these things can contribute to poor health.
- 9:19And if you're someone who has an unexplained illness or has not
- 9:24figured out all the pieces of the puzzle to be healed, I believe it's
- 9:28worthwhile to stop consuming bacon, ham, any pork products, any shellfish.
- 9:35I know that they are prized on fine dining menus, but God is the same
- 9:41yesterday and for- today and forever.
- 9:44I would highly recommend avoiding what the Bible calls in the
- 9:48ancient Hebrew filth or trash
- 9:51David Friedman, BS: Yeah.
- 9:51Yeah, one thing that people avoid is salt.
- 9:54I know it's been vilified for years as a driver of high blood pressure,
- 9:57heart disease, yet scripture treats it as something sacred.
- 10:01Why has modern medicine turned on salt, and what's the real difference
- 10:04between refined and the mineral-rich sea salt that you recommend?
- 10:08Jordan Rubin: Well, I think many people out there are subclinically
- 10:13dehydrated, and hydration doesn't simply involve water consumption.
- 10:18In fact, if you're consuming a low mineral water in high quantities, you could
- 10:22actually be diluting your body's minerals.
- 10:25Salt is very important.
- 10:26The Bible says great things about salt.
- 10:29He compares his people to the salt of the earth, a city on
- 10:34a hill, et cetera, et cetera.
- 10:36And he even says, "If salt loses its saltiness, it is no good, only
- 10:43useful to be thrown into manure pile."
- 10:45And David, I take every word of the Bible and try to interpret it.
- 10:49And what I hear from that is, number one, salt is good for you.
- 10:53Number two, even if you have old salt, it can still help build soil and have
- 10:59plants flourish, and it's absolutely true.
- 11:02Salt is important.
- 11:03I'm guessing you read this book or some of the work from Dr.
- 11:09Fereydoon Batmanghelij, otherwise known as Dr.
- 11:12Batman, who cured prisoners, as he was a prisoner of war himself, from
- 11:19peptic ulcer disease and other health conditions from simply drinking
- 11:23water with a little bit of salt.
- 11:26Yes, high mineral salt is better, but salt is absolutely important.
- 11:32Sodium chloride and other electrolytes, such as potassium,
- 11:36magnesium, are absolutely awesome.
- 11:41And so we could stand to consume a little more salt in our diet.
- 11:46And by the way, if you're wondering how much, if you have a taste for
- 11:49salt, if you're eating food that's bland, that may mean you actually
- 11:54need to salt your food more, and now you have permission to do it.
- 11:58The Bible prized salt so much, David, in ancient history, that the word salary
- 12:05was originally coined based on the Roman term where someone would be paid
- 12:11in salt, and that's where we get the expression, "He's not worth his salt."
- 12:16Folks, there's a lot of truth in old expressions, and we need to get our
- 12:22heads out of the sand or somewhere else and start realizing that this
- 12:28ancient wisdom, even one hundred, two hundred years ago, is far greater than,
- 12:33quote-unquote, some modern science
- 12:36David Friedman, BS: Yeah, so true.
- 12:37Yeah, I always say the human body is 70% saltwater.
- 12:40How can it be bad for us?
- 12:41It's what we're made out of.
- 12:42Without it, we would die.
- 12:44and when you have a heart attack and the paramedic comes and he puts that
- 12:47IV in you, guess what he's putting in you when you have a heart attack?
- 12:49Sodium.
- 12:50It's saline.
- 12:51So it makes no sense.
- 12:52I'm glad you cleared that up.
- 12:53I 100% agree.
- 12:55Is there a certain salt, by the way?
- 12:56People say, "Well, what kind?"
- 12:57They're confused.
- 12:58Black lava, Redmond, Himalayan, Celtic, or is just any one good to reach for?
- 13:02Jordan Rubin: I am a fan of Celtic Sea Salt for quite some time.
- 13:06I think Himalayan can be good.
- 13:08What you wanna do is get a salt that is unprocessed.
- 13:11Different people believe different salts have more or less benefits.
- 13:16If you had to pin me down, David, my favorite salt in the world is
- 13:20a Makai sea salt under the Celtic Sea Salt brand from Kona, Hawaii.
- 13:26That is this-- You're gonna love this, 2,000 feet deep, reservoir.
- 13:32I remember learning about it 20 years ago.
- 13:33It is outstanding
- 13:35David Friedman, BS: Yes, and filled with minerals too as well.
- 13:37That's great.
- 13:38Talk to us about fasting.
- 13:39You know, the heart of your book, and it's a practice with deep spiritual roots,
- 13:43yet so many people find it intimidating.
- 13:45For someone just starting out, how do they step into that with faith instead of fear?
- 13:50Jordan Rubin: Fasting is essential, and the Bible says certain
- 13:54terminology such as when you fast.
- 13:56So when Jesus talked to his followers, he didn't say if you
- 13:59fast, he said when you fast.
- 14:01Fasting is critical.
- 14:02We all do it for a period of time a day because nobody eats for 24 hours.
- 14:08But I believe if the average person would spend a shorter window of the day
- 14:14eating and a longer window of the day resting or cleansing, they'd be healthier.
- 14:19David, you're gonna love this.
- 14:20A recent study published on those diagnosed with Crohn's disease,
- 14:26inflammatory bowel disease, compared those who were intermittent fasting
- 14:32or in a time-restricted eating window of eight hours a day versus the other
- 14:38group that ate a normal amount of hours a day approximating 14 to 16.
- 14:45So this is the great part of the study.
- 14:47The food intake was controlled, so both groups ate the exact amount of food.
- 14:53One group consumed the food in a shorter window, one in a longer.
- 14:57The group that consumed food following an intermittent fasting protocol,
- 15:03eating eight hours a day, they had lower inflammation, better digestive comfort.
- 15:09If they needed to lose fat, they lost visceral fat, and
- 15:14they felt better in general.
- 15:16This is the first study that I'm aware of on a disease population
- 15:20studying intermittent fasting with the exact food composition between
- 15:26the group that ate in a restricted period versus those that ate all day.
- 15:30Because, David, I don't know if you've heard this, but some, health influencers
- 15:34say the only reason fasting is beneficial is because you consume less food.
- 15:39Well, this proved fasting is beneficial not only because of the decrease in
- 15:47food consumption, but because you are allowing the body to heal itself,
- 15:52a process called autophagy, where the body is cleansing what doesn't
- 15:56belong and is building resilience.
- 16:00Isaiah 58, starting in verse six, talks about God's chosen fast and how
- 16:07it basically unlocks your physical and emotional health potential
- 16:12and can even break addictions.
- 16:14Fasting was originally called by Hippocrates and other fathers of
- 16:18medicine as the healer within.
- 16:22It's a no-brainer, and if you wanna start simply, just eat your
- 16:27breakfast or break fast one hour later each week and eventually get
- 16:33down to a smaller eating window.
- 16:35It works miraculously for those who need to lose a few pounds or
- 16:40for those who want better digestion
- 16:43David Friedman, BS: Yeah, I've heard the, 8-8-8.
- 16:45Yeah, you sleep eight hours, work eight hours, and have that
- 16:48eight-hour window of eating.
- 16:49Simple.
- 16:50Jordan Rubin: That's awesome.
- 16:51And it's, it's, it is simple to do.
- 16:53Most people, David, don't wake up hungry, so we kind of force ourselves
- 16:56with the nonsense, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, eat
- 17:00cereal and some kind of, skim milk.
- 17:04All that is, is diabetes by lunch in a bowl
- 17:07David Friedman, BS: Wow.
- 17:07Talk to us about autoimmune conditions.
- 17:09It's exploded.
- 17:10It's an epidemic now.
- 17:11Is your opinion that the body is actually turning on itself, or is there some
- 17:14underlying trigger, something maybe in our food environment provoking
- 17:18the immune system to react like that?
- 17:20Or is our bodies after millions of years just going after each other?
- 17:23Jordan Rubin: I really do not have a belief in the traditional autoimmune
- 17:28theory, and I know that this is controversial, and it's easy to say
- 17:31that there are hundreds of diseases where the body's attacking itself.
- 17:35The truth is the body is attacking itself because it is mistakenly
- 17:41trying to attack something else.
- 17:43The body was not meant to attack itself.
- 17:45This is pretty simple, and I know, I'm gonna be criticized for saying this.
- 17:50All nutrition and all disease is based on two things: a lack of nutrients in the
- 17:57cells and an overabundance of toxicity in the organs and systems of the body.
- 18:03The reason that someone is experiencing an autoimmune disease is because
- 18:08there is a malfunction in the internal environment, and it's often caused
- 18:12externally, and I'm sure you see this with individuals you work with.
- 18:17It could be a mold trigger.
- 18:19It could be a mercury heavy metal trigger.
- 18:23It could be a microbial trigger, whether it's a fungal overgrowth, parasitic.
- 18:28We're hearing about a mass outbreak of parasites now across America.
- 18:32I do not believe that autoimmune disease is because you were created
- 18:37wrong and you're attacking yourself.
- 18:39I think it is much different than that, and I believe that God can heal you
- 18:45if you put the right nutrients in your body and you change your environment
- 18:51and even aid in detoxification
- 18:53David Friedman, BS: Yeah, I agree 100%.
- 18:54Like when I get Crohn's in my, 50s, it's like, "Oh, so 50 years I was fine,
- 18:58now it's deciding to attack itself?"
- 18:59No, I was poisoned by DuPont.
- 19:01It was a chemical called GenX, a PFAS chemical.
- 19:03And there you go, your environmental toxin.
- 19:06And then of course then that affects your nutritional content.
- 19:09So I agree with you.
- 19:10All right, enough of this G-rated stuff.
- 19:12Let's talk dirty.
- 19:14We live in this age of germ phobia.
- 19:16We got hand sanitizers on every counter.
- 19:18Kids, now they're trading their backyard for video games.
- 19:21Dirt's kind of like a disease waiting to happen in everyone's eyes now.
- 19:25You're a fan of dirt, though.
- 19:26Tell us why dirt does so many great things and holds such
- 19:29a special place in your heart
- 19:31Jordan Rubin: first of all, it sounds cool to say dirt, but as a farmer,
- 19:34I'm gonna correct you and say soil.
- 19:36Dirt is-- Dirt is what the farms we drive by on our countryside are
- 19:43planting genetically modified corn and soy in where there's no nutrition.
- 19:47But soil is so alive with everything we need.
- 19:51In fact, the Bible says that man came from the dust of the earth, but the real
- 19:58translation is man came from the soil.
- 20:00And David, if you've never heard this before, I wanna tell you something that
- 20:03God revealed to me that's just amazing.
- 20:05So first of all, we call topsoil, that's the top part of our soil, which is
- 20:10responsible for nutrients in our food, it's responsible for filtering our water.
- 20:15It is our inheritance on this earth.
- 20:18And America was so amazing in its foundations because it was
- 20:23a, an incredible fertile land.
- 20:25Listen to some of our songs that we sing about our country and
- 20:30understand how fertile it was.
- 20:31So topsoil in Latin is called humus.
- 20:35Humus is super similar to the word human, which they were
- 20:40both derived from the same word.
- 20:42And in Hebrew, if I ask anybody who was the first man in
- 20:46the Bible, they'll say Adam.
- 20:47Well, guess what?
- 20:48The Hebrew word for soil is adamah.
- 20:53It is Adam with one more letter in Hebrew, two letters in English, which
- 20:58literally means everything that we are is made from the soil, and when we die,
- 21:06our physical body goes back to the soil.
- 21:09I quote the Bible mostly, David, but then I'm tempted to quote The Lion King
- 21:12when Mufasa explains the circle of life because he says, "When the lions die,
- 21:18they become the ground that becomes the grass, and the antelope eat the grass.
- 21:23It's all part of the circle of life."
- 21:24But getting back to health, our minerals are depleted.
- 21:30We have microbes in our soil that we should be interacting on a regular
- 21:34basis with, but our over-sanitized, triple-washed lettuce world, where we
- 21:40used to be duped into, especially in 2020 and 2021, using, hand sanitizer
- 21:46that's alcohol-based that kills everything, we are less healthy.
- 21:51There is research that shows that people who interact with the outside
- 21:55world, either physically outside or even having a pet in the house that
- 22:00goes outside and brings some of that in, they have healthier immune systems.
- 22:04It is nature's immunizations.
- 22:07And this helps us get healthy.
- 22:09If you're gardening, if you're farming, if you're outside forest bathing,
- 22:15you are going to be much healthier.
- 22:17Our immune systems were designed to be developed in
- 22:20concert with the outside world
- 22:23David Friedman, BS: Yeah, it's so true.
- 22:24I saw a TikTok influence I follow.
- 22:25He goes to these street food places and overseas and people nasty and
- 22:30they're cutting it with utensils that are rust and dirty and filthy
- 22:33and he drinks it and all that.
- 22:34And there's one of them, it would look like fresh produce and he's
- 22:36about to eat it and he looked, he says, "Oh, there's dirt on the bottom.
- 22:39Oh, God, ugh, I'm throwing it out."
- 22:40I'm like, "Are you kidding me?
- 22:42You eat from all this junk and you're worried about dirt, soil?"
- 22:47It's like, you and me, we played in the sandbox when we were younger.
- 22:49we got our hands dirty and that's part of growing up.
- 22:52And I think nowadays kids don't go out and play.
- 22:54Moms are washing their hands 50 times a day.
- 22:57You agree?
- 22:58I mean, we're such a clean people now but we're getting dirty germ-wise
- 23:03Jordan Rubin: Yeah, it is really sad.
- 23:04In fact, I believe throughout history, farmers and farmers'
- 23:08children were the healthiest people.
- 23:10Now, because farms are laden with very harmful toxic chemicals,
- 23:16it's quite the opposite.
- 23:17We're seeing farmers that spray these chemicals or use nitrate-based
- 23:23fertilizers are having major, major health issues, suing different companies.
- 23:27it's so, so sad.
- 23:28But, when I started out in the natural products industry, I had this saying, "If
- 23:33you wanna be clean, you gotta get dirty."
- 23:35And it has been proven years ago, and someone asked me this recently and I said
- 23:39it: "Are you afraid of eating fruit now or berries because of the parasites?"
- 23:43And I said, "Listen, 10 people will eat at a restaurant, and they could all eat
- 23:49the same, quote-unquote, infected fish.
- 23:52Say that there's a parasite or, there's some bacteria in there.
- 23:55Maybe three out of the 10 have symptoms of food poisoning.
- 23:59Why did the other seven do just fine?
- 24:02Because their internal milieu, as they called it in French, their terrain,
- 24:08their overall health was stronger."
- 24:10And there's been crazy experiments of regenerative farmers drinking out of the
- 24:14trough of their livestock and being fine.
- 24:17Even, over 100 years ago, a scientist opened up a surgical window to his
- 24:25gut and injected toxins, bacterial toxins, and ended up being just
- 24:31fine because his body dealt with it.
- 24:33David, we are dealing with an insufficient immune system due to a lack of nutrition
- 24:38and an overabundance of toxicity.
- 24:40It sounds simple, but it is simple, and the Biblio Diet's really
- 24:46intending to get people back to the way God created us to eat.
- 24:50It's the only diet that not only allows, but recommends red meat, dairy,
- 24:57bread, fat, and salt, and will tell you the best types of each to consume.
- 25:04This is a diet your family will love.
- 25:06You're not gonna be restricted, you're not gonna be deprived, and you're not
- 25:09gonna say 10 or 20 years later, "Wow, I can't believe I fell for that diet," the
- 25:13way some of us do with the fat-free craze in the 90s before we were enlightened
- 25:18David Friedman, BS: So true.
- 25:19And you mentioned, we talked in the beginning of the hour you've built
- 25:21some major nutritional companies.
- 25:23What's the one thing about supplement industry that you could
- 25:26share with somebody that you wish people understood before they buy?
- 25:29Jordan Rubin: first of all, I want people to know dietary supplements are regulated.
- 25:32This idea that it's an unregulated industry is a bunch of nonsense.
- 25:36I can tell you, I've battled regulators, the FDA and the FTC in my time, and
- 25:40they very much regulate our industry.
- 25:42I think for us, we strive to be vertically integrated.
- 25:46We wanna have products that contain ingredients that we grow or raise
- 25:50on our own farm, and we wanna make sure that each product has an
- 25:54ingredient or more that is backed by a human randomized controlled trial.
- 25:59It's the best way to combine ancient wisdom with modern science.
- 26:04And, there are certain supplement categories that make sense
- 26:08because we simply don't consume said nutrients in our diet.
- 26:13I don't think we need redundant nutrients, but if you're not going
- 26:17to consume bone broth or you're not gonna eat chicken skins, you should
- 26:22be getting collagen as a supplement.
- 26:25If you're not going to consume high-quality dairy protein,
- 26:28maybe a whey protein or an A2 protein supplement makes sense.
- 26:33Here's another big one.
- 26:34If you won't eat liver, heart, and kidney, which were part of our ancestors'
- 26:38diets, you probably will benefit greatly from an organ supplement.
- 26:42I know my family does.
- 26:43And I'll add another one.
- 26:45If you're not getting enough fiber from fruits and vegetables,
- 26:48maybe consume a fiber that comes from healthy organic plants.
- 26:53Those are just examples of how supplementing your
- 26:56diet can make an impact.
- 26:58Last, last one I'll say, and people often look for the miracle supplement.
- 27:03You know what a miracle supplement is?
- 27:04Vitamin D when you live in Washington State and it's February.
- 27:08But is it a miracle or is it because it's missing because you
- 27:12don't have the sun's UV rays?
- 27:15These are reasons to supplement and, I think America has never been friendlier
- 27:21to the idea that supplementing can make an impact on your health, but it only works
- 27:27if your diet and lifestyle is on point.
- 27:32Supplements will not replace exercise.
- 27:34They won't replace forgiving someone who hurts you, and they
- 27:37won't replace a healthy diet
- 27:39David Friedman, BS: Well said.
- 27:40Well said.
- 27:41in the couple minutes we have left, talk about the, uh,
- 27:43controversial topic, alcohol.
- 27:44For years we've been told glass of wine is heart healthy, and hey, Jesus
- 27:48drank wine, so how bad can it be?
- 27:49But the latest research says even moderate drinking takes a toll on the body.
- 27:54What's your view on wine or even alcohol in general?
- 27:58Jordan Rubin: Thank you for bringing that study up.
- 28:00I am a zero tolerance policy for alcohol in its modern form.
- 28:04That doesn't mean a glass of biodynamic or organic sulfite-free
- 28:08wine is gonna kill you, but don't do it in the name of health.
- 28:12Jesus consumed wine that was fermented in the skins or intestinal sacs of animals.
- 28:18They didn't add sugar.
- 28:19They didn't add extra yeast.
- 28:21There was alcohol, but much milder.
- 28:24Think of like a kombucha/wine cooler, if they even have wine coolers anymore.
- 28:29But bottom line, David, I think many people in the name of health are
- 28:33consuming one, two, or three drinks a day.
- 28:36And if you will cease that, your body, including your
- 28:40liver, will be thankful you did
- 28:43David Friedman, BS: And last question, Jabba, what's your views on coffee?
- 28:46I know a fellow Crohn's and I've got Crohn's and, some people it bothers the
- 28:50gut, some people say it's gut healthy.
- 28:51What's your views?
- 28:53Jordan Rubin: Yeah, I'm not a coffee drinker and I never have been.
- 28:55I think coffee can be healthy.
- 28:58There are a lot of pitfalls though.
- 28:59You wanna make sure to consume coffee from beans that are not rancid.
- 29:02So grind your own beans, or if you wanna pre-grind them, put
- 29:05the grounds in the freezer.
- 29:07Look for organic or regenerative.
- 29:09Some people like to cold brew for less, quote unquote, "acidity."
- 29:14And I think coffee is as important as what you put in it than
- 29:19how the coffee behaves itself.
- 29:22And you wanna make sure to use healthy fats.
- 29:24I like adding collagen or protein to coffee because it gives you a
- 29:27good boost, but I do not recommend people drink coffee if they don't.
- 29:33I think herbal infusions, teas, et cetera, are a better route.
- 29:38And in "The BiblioDiet," David, chapter 14, I introduce a biblically based
- 29:44tea I call Healing Leaves, which comes from Ezekiel 47 and Revelation 22
- 29:51that God calls healing and medicine.
- 29:53It will blow your mind.
- 29:54I'll tell you how to make it.
- 29:55You can pick leaves in your backyard or order them online.
- 29:58This is absolutely amazing.
- 30:00I do think warm drinks can be excellent.
- 30:03Coffee can be fine, but it's not something I recommend to people
- 30:07if you're not a coffee drinker.
- 30:09And most people need to consume a little less because too much caffeine
- 30:13can hurt your adrenals over time
- 30:16David Friedman, BS: Yeah, so true.
- 30:17So true.
- 30:18And the minute we have left, is there anything else you'd like to share?
- 30:20There's so many things we could chat about.
- 30:21What did we not cover today that you'd like to leave with the listeners?
- 30:25Jordan Rubin: I just want to say this.
- 30:26No matter what you've been diagnosed with, no matter what you've
- 30:28told, what you've heard, or what you've read, you can overcome.
- 30:34You can be more than a conqueror according to the God that lives inside of you.
- 30:41So if you call on the name of the Lord and you want to be healed,
- 30:45first you have to have faith, then have hope, and then take action.
- 30:50You will be rewarded in the future for the decisions you make with your
- 30:55diet and your lifestyle, and you can glorify God by the way you eat
- 30:59and you live, which is absolutely amazing, and it's our responsibility
- 31:04David Friedman, BS: Bravo, bravo.
