- Alex: Welcome to another edition of the Unsexy Podcast, episode eight, check-in seven of Unsexy Coaching with Aaron. So I'll throw it on over to him. Aaron: Thank you. So all right, dude. this is let's see, week seven. So what was your weight? Alex: one sixty three point four seven. Aaron: how many workouts did you do? Alex: Six. Aaron: Six, good. How many days did you adhere to your macros? Alex: Every day except Saturday, get some Italian food at a place called Matteo's. Don't recommend. It's good it's Aaron: How is it? Okay. Good to good to know. Alex: good but n but like I'm sure there's other places that are better for anyone listening. Aaron: Yeah. Yes. Was that in like s like Salt Lake City proper? Alex: Yeah, downtown Salt Lake. Yeah. Aaron: that's actually good to know because I I think I was looking at that. It has really good reviews, right? Alex: Yeah, it's like it's good. It's just it's just Aaron: It's fine. It's fine. Alex: one of those things you're like, hmm I don't know. I don't know if like if if I don't want to go there again. Aaron: If there's not something they're like, this is the greatest whatever, yeah, exactly. Alex: There's I will give you it's not it's in Sugar House, this place that Katie and I went a few months back that th like that's what I was comparing it to. I'm like, I hope it's like this experience. I'm like, it wasn't. But it's still good. Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. I God, there's this place. Let's get totally derailed on eating. there's this place in San Did I did I send it to you in San Diego, the Italian place? I can't remember if I send it to you while you guys were down there or not. Or I might have find out after you're after. I can't remember. Alex: Yeah. Aaron: but it's Eric Pipotone, so obviously it's an Italian. So he knows his Italian food. And he goes to Italy all the time. And he took us like he recommended this place. my God, it was so good. my god, it was so good. I just wanna go back to San Diego just for that. Alex: I think it was I do remember that and I think it was you told us 'cause you gave us a bunch of places, but that place wasn't on there. But the Asian fusion place that we went to is like one of our favorite restaurants we've been to. I don't even remember what it's called. It's delightful. Aaron: I don't remember the of the I have to like it's funny, I have to do this like weird search every time I'm look I guess I could just ask Eric, but I'm like, I don't want to bother him. He's probably busy. So I do this like weird Google like map search for it and I finally find it. all right. average steps. Alex: Nineteen thousand. I really don't think I really don't think that's accurate like it's whatever. It's w Aaron: Like too high or too low? Alex: I think it's too high. Like I feel like I'm closer to like fifteen thousand. Aaron: Let's put fifty. Okay, good, good, good. Got that in there. Alright, so what any wins or achievements this week? Alex: for this week I have some psychological motivation ones. more people fist bumping me at the gym, like going, hey, and giving me a fist bump. Might not be because I'm strong, Aaron: You're they're bumping your fist. Alex: but I think it's because they've seen me there so many times. They're like, okay, like I can actually interact with this person because they won't be gone tomorrow. Aaron: Yes, yeah. Fist my bump. Alex: Don't ask me what their names are. Aaron: y I have you made up names yet? gotta Beardy Alex: Nope. there's no I mean I d well it sucks is some people some people are telling me their names I'm like, already forgot I'm gonna have to ask you again at some point. Hey man Aaron: I I always tell people I always tell people when they tell me I'm like, I'm probably not gonna remember it, and you're not gonna remember my name, and I won't be offended when you don't remember my name. So just want to throw that out there. I always tell people that because I'm terrible at remembering names. at the gym. Yeah, that is nice. You kind of start seeing there's a lot of new people at the gym today. I it's like I was like, is it the first? Alex: Start a school. Aaron: Is that why? well, our I guess. Alex: I like Aaron: I guess maybe. But like I go at a time where people should people should be at work. What are you guys doing here? Alex: More and more people more and more people aren't going into the office anymore. Aaron: Yeah, I guess. yeah, there's like a lot of people. I I I'd been gone for like three days, because I was in Vegas. And I was like, it felt like I'd been gone for like three months when I got back. I was like, who the hell are all these people? I didn't recognize I just I mean there's those obviously the regulars, but there's a bunch of people I didn't recognize who was weird. and I was offended. I haven't seen Dan. Dan, where have you been, man? but again, I've been gone, so I just got back last night and Alex: Tell you what, not showing up to the gym just for anyone that's listening. You you have like two days and then I'll think you're dead. So Aaron: Yeah. Dude, I have a I have a tragic, well, s it is tragic. So my buddy Nick and I used to go to the Go To Worlds gym. This was like 10 or 15 years ago. And there was a guy just just really jacked, built dude. He's probably his fifties, but just he was really, really in shape. And then just we saw him all the time. We'd just say hi to him, interact with him a little bit. Tony, his name was Tony, Pepperoni Tony. and And then all of a sudden we didn't see him. I was like, what the hell happened to Tony? He's just not here anymore. Like, I would say maybe a year later, we were at the gym and he came in and he was in a wheelchair. He got in a motorcycle accident. He was going through a stop sign and someone didn't like just blew through the stop sign and hit him, and he was in a wheelchair. It was just like, whoa. Alex: Gotta leave, man. Aaron: Yeah, real bummer. Sorry to bummer bum everybody out on this podcast. Alex: Well, I was expecting him to be dead, like and then like we went to the gym and they had a memorial plaque for him where it's like, Hey, are we our are Aaron: Yeah, I was like tone and just Alex: the best gym goer of world gym history Aaron: Of all time. Yeah, it was just like it was c it was crazy. So I it's funny you said that 'cause that's literally what I think of. I don't see some like, are they okay? And I think that's probably what I think I think every gym regular, like, even if you don't talk to people, if you don't see something, there's another like couple that used to come. I'm like, I everyone's like, I don't know what happened to those guys. Alex: Yeah. Aaron: like just they were there all the time for like over a year and then just I've never seen since. And I'm like, they probably moved. It's probably what happened. Like people get jobs and move. So But yeah, you do you just to let people know, n you are thought of. You are thought of when you're not going to the gym. People do think of you. As hopefully in a in a positive way, 'cause the couple, they were like super dice, just like a younger couple, but they were, you know, very, very respectable and so always saying hi. Yeah, Alex: Yeah. Those are the people that you want at the gym. Aaron: exactly. any struggles and obstacles this week? Alex: My right arm has something minorly r wrong with it that I need to get checked out, but I'm too lazy to get it checked out. It only impacts my bicep workouts so far. and then also like right here. It's like if I like 'cause I thought it was like muscular. Aaron: What part your arm? Is it like right is it like right is it on like like here? Alex: It's like a like my elbow. I have a feeling it's tendons. And I and like I'm doing low weight, so I'm just like Aaron: Or is it like the tendons? Yeah. God. Yeah. Alex: So one thing I am testing out is I have made ergonomical changes to like how my desk is because one thing I notice is when I'm sitting down I'm not at the ninety degree angle. It's been a little bit elevated. So I'm like, I wonder if it's like putting strain there. So we'll see. TBD. Aaron: Yeah, I had I had to set this up so it just like perfectly lines up with my my desk and I could just just just a smooth landing for my arm. yeah. Alex: And then also my gym is closed this week, so that effin sucks. Aaron: What? Why? Alex: Annual cleaning for the rec center. Aaron: Disgusting. Did they give you like a rebate on it? Or not a rebate? Alex: Yeah, like they're like you can go to the American Fork one if you want. Just like it's already far enough drive. No, no, no, it's no. Aaron: Isn't that like isn't it like thirty minutes away from you, American Fork? Alex: Like it's it's not it's not that crazy away, but it's far enough where I'm just like, mm, looks like looks like Yeah, it's like we'll do we'll do Aaron: I'm gonna work out at home. that's why you've been doing your home workouts. gotcha. Okay. Alex: home gyms for this week and then back at it next week. Aaron: And so you said it was closed for a week? That Alex: Yeah, so just this week. Aaron: that place better be fucking spotless when you get back in there. A week, that's a long time to clean a a building that you have said is not very large. Alex: Yeah, and I see my I see my roller, my my ab roller. It there's a lot of dirt on it. So I'll check it again. And if it continues to accumulate dirt, I'm gonna be very pissed off. Better not get a single piece of dirt on it for like the next six months. Aaron: It better be the cleanest, the cleanest ab roller. Alex: I do kinda wonder like what they're actually doing because you're right, it should not take that long. It should take a day. Yeah. Aaron: No. I mean I could see like a day. Yeah, I was gonna say a day, maybe two if you're doing like some sort of like resurfacing the floor or something. Also, Alex: Doing our deep clean Aaron: do they not have someone that cleans it throughout the day normally? Alex: They do. It looks like a guy who doesn't love his job and I don't and every single time I see him he's fixing equipment. So Aaron: gotcha. Yeah. My the at Gold's gym, they have like a crew that does it. They do such a good job. I literally went up to one of them, I like, I was in the cleaning industry for a very long time. And I just want to say you guys do an awesome job here. So I thank you. I was like, just great. This place looks great. So, you know, shout out to the shout out to the janitors and the cleaners at your gym. Like, show them some love, man. Make keeping your your your gym looking nice. Like, let them know. It always feels good when you're you're told you're doing a good job. She was doing awesome job. Alex: The sicknesses and the diseases at bay. Aaron: Yeah, exactly. I mean, that's the only reason COVID didn't hit Utah was because or Idaho was because of them cleaning the equipment so well. We never, not one case, look it up. Look, Google it. Yeah, Alex: When did they when did they become a political podcast? Well, Bad Bunny. It was with Bad Bunny, everybody. Aaron: the bad buddy one was great. so you and I were kind of talking offline about about your goals. obviously you're you're dropping a slightly in weight and that is definitely fat. I mean we saw some of your before and after pictures. and then I said what I was telling Alex was it's either you at the very minimum maintaining muscle, but most likely 'cause are you increasing in strength with with most of your your lifts? Like yeah. Yeah. Alex: Exercises? Yeah. Aaron: Okay. So I mean that's you have to be getting, you know, building muscle in order to do that. and so the and the other thing too is so all right, you have we had your you wanted to look like Tom Hardy, not from Bane. We switched it to Warrior, right? and unfortunately we're doing this naturally and not filled with the asteroids. Yeah, fortunately, I guess Alex: Or fortunately. Aaron: not and it's not gonna be as quick. So we were kind of talking, like I said, we were talking offline about what it was your most important for you was to be kind of as cut or as defined as possible for for Hawaii. And so that's why I don't want to increase your macros too much, if we increase it at all. just because I think we're on a pretty decent trajectory where I want to keep you kind of at almost maintenance and still building muscle while while losing fat. And then what we can do is do like a serious bulk or as I like to say accumulating mass after after Hawaii because typically like I cause I the only reason I know because I'm literally doing that right now, which sounds awesome. They're like, sweet, you can just eat a bunch of food. I must be like, I actually hate it because I just feel like I'm getting fat. because I weighed at 217 this morning, which is probably a little off. I just got back from vacation. You know, I'm probably close to probably 215. But at you know, for those new, I was like 200 pounds when I first started the the bulk a few months ago. several months ago. This is like I gained 15 pounds in in fucking two months. You should probably find a new coach. but Alex: Ha ha ha. Aaron: yeah, and then I'm gonna get a DEXA scan. You're getting your DEXA scan in October, October. Alex: October, first week of October. Aaron: Okay. Yeah, I'm probably gonna do another one in because I haven't done one since I think June. So I'll do one the beginning of September just to see where I'm at, body fat wise. But anyways, that's not about me. It's about you. So that's what we're gonna do. probably just maybe increase macros a little bit just to make sure we're not losing too much, too much weight, but really go after like the bulk cycle after after that trip because again, the problem with not doing a bunch of steroids is it takes a Very, very, very long Alex: Much longer time. Aaron: time to build muscle. and I unfortunately know that we talked about it with Lloyd. Alex: Did we talk about that? Like last time? 'Cause like if if I did, I'm sorry anyone who's listening to this where I just like, my yeah, we I was like, this is gonna take like two years. Aaron: Yeah, well, what it was the the example is when I was talking to Lloyd, I was like, I don't like how my quads look. I don't want to really. I mean, I have a very unrealistic, and I know it's unrealistic, so like Lloyd's coach, I was like, my legs to look like that guy's. And they're like, just like just massive, Alex: Ch tree trunks. Aaron: just tree trunks, just striated, huge. The guy uses a lot of steroids. and he's also been doing it for a long time. Because even Lloyd, what I was talking to is like, Dude, you'd have to do a lot of steroids and it would still take you at least a year or two to do that. It's like he's like, but naturally, you're looking at probably three years. And you still won't get to what his legs look like. It's like, but you'll be your legs will be bigger. And so it is just one of those things. It's hard to, it's hard to kind of wrap your head around of how long it takes to actually build, build that muscle. but that's just, I mean, again, that's just kind of the Alex: So if we have young people listening start now. Like Aaron: If we have young people, yes, start now. Please start now. And the other benefit that I had was I was super fat. So get really fat for like 10 years, but still work out, still work out. And then what happens is you lose a bunch of weight and you already have this muscle that's underneath all that fat. because you have to carry your fat ass around. but yeah, no, if you're young, it just it just takes a long time. That's honestly what it is. Like Like like realistically, the amount of muscle you could put on in a year is probably I don't know, dude. I'm just gonna be throwing numbers on something. We're gonna get called out. Was probably like five to ten pounds of muscle in a year is like doing really, really, really good. and that's staying really locked in. And so it doesn't sound like a lot, but I mean, what are you at now, Alex? You're at one sixty three, so you'd be one seventy three. Actually it'd be more because you're you're you're still gonna add some there's gonna be some some fat in there too. so realistically, you'd probably be around 180 and then get you down to I would what do you want to be up body fat wise? Like under 15, 12? Yeah. Yeah. That's probably I I'm really curious to see what my body fat's at right now. It'll probably make me depressed. But it will be I would say, yeah, I would I it's funny, Josh was was texting me this morning. He's like, What is like what do you want to like be at? It's like he wants to see his abs. And I was like, usually I was like, it just depends. It's all gen it's a lot of it's genetic, but typically you have to be under fifteen percent body fat to really see definition in your abs. again, it's everyone's different. So maybe it's maybe you can see it at twenty percent. but like just good solid definition is usually under under fifteen is a kind of a rule of thumb. so yeah, once once we get you there, that would be you'll be you'll be solid. Yeah, you'll be solved. So that's kind of the the game plan for right now is to keep you building muscle and losing fat. So we can hopefully see some some some abdominals. How many ab workouts are you doing a week? How much do I have that set up for you? Okay. Yeah. Alex: It's for sure two. For sure two. Sometimes three. Aaron: Yeah. Yeah, I try and just throw one in every other day. Just some sort of like an ab roller or that the exercise. Did we do the ab crunches when we yeah. Alex: Yeah. We have ab crunches, leg lifts, and ab roller. Aaron: Like yeah. Good. Okay, good. Do I have to do do the the like the oblique Alex: No. Aaron: exercise? I need to show you that one. That one's great. Like it just you get like the the your obliques. That's why it's called the oblique exercise. But you get like that's like for whatever even though I'm I'm gaining weight, like the obliques are still there, I'm like, hell yeah. Alex: Yeah, yeah. Aaron: and it's a pretty easy exercise. All you're doing is you just take like a cable, you get on your knees, and you're just like crunching down and it's like into your side and you'll you'll you'll feel it. Alex: So it's ab crunch with one. Aaron: Yeah, so you're gonna use just like a a D handle. It's just the regular one instead of using like a rope, and then you just get on your knees, just there, and all you're doing is you don't move your arm at all. You're just heaping in there and you're just crunching down, holding it, and then going back up. and those are awesome. And there's a bunch of other extra, but that's just what I've for a long time. There's also wood choppers. We do you grab it from the top, you just kind of keep your arm straight. You're just going straight down. They use like engaging your core to chop it down. Those are great, but I started to feel a weird pain in my my trap. And so I stopped doing those. so if you don't feel pain, do those ones because I used to love them until I started feeling a weird, weird pain. but prior to it, we probably should address your injury. Not or like like Alex: Yeah. Aaron: my arm hurts, great. Anyways, so I was at this Italian restaurant. I does it hurt when you're doing hammers or any any sort of like bicep exercise. Alex: Primarily it's primarily hammers. And it's honestly like it's like so weird. 'Cause I was doing no, I guess I was doing hammers yesterday, but I wasn't doing hammers army style, military style, like on a military's press, I was just standing one. And those Aaron: On the preacher? Yeah. Yeah. Alex: didn't hit hurt as bad, but it started to, so I just whenever it starts to hurt I just switch to normal grip. Aaron: Does it not hurt at all when you do like a regular bicep curl? Alex: I'd say no. Aaron: That's funny. You want to know what? It's in your right. That's like where mine Alex: Right arm, yeah. Aaron: is. Like I can't, for whatever reason, my right arm, I can't do hammer curls. It just it hurts just right in here really bad. so I just I just don't fucking do them. and so you could just, in all honesty, if those are hurting, and maybe you've already like taken it out of the the plan, but we could switch those up for for something else. Because the problem, especially if it has something to do with your tendons, the like the literally the only way to heal those is to not Do anything with that tendon. Like there's no yeah, there's really nothing else. Alex: Magic. Yeah. Aaron: Yeah, there's I remember because I went a long time ago to a doctor because I was having the same issue, and he's just like, Yep, just rest. That's what you got in. I was like, How long is that? I think, dude, it's like I don't remember the exact it was like, you know, eight weeks, twelve weeks, just don't do anything. I was like, Yeah, fuck you. I was like, What does he know? He's just a doctor. Alex: Well, who who am I? Just a doctor? Aaron: I was like, yeah, totally, totally. Yeah. I'm just gonna totally stop working out for well, I didn't say stop working out, but just like, but yeah, I guess the lesson is if you're doing an exercise that is is causing pain, not just like pain as in a burning sensation in your muscles, because that's what you're supposed to feel. stop doing Just don't do them. Do something, do something else. Alex: Well, I I don't know if we've talked about that, but like I did I did the thing with Katie where I'm just like, Can you just feel my bicep? She's like, Your bicep is so much your right bicep is so much softer than your left bicep. Like, I can't even get like a good flex with my right Aaron: Like a good pump. Alex: bicep. so that's like I said, Aaron: Interesting. Alex: I should probably get it checked out, but Aaron: Yeah. Yeah, d don't listen to me. I am I'm the guy who didn't listen to his doctor. yeah, I would I would probably have that looked at for sure. Cause that's probably no bueno. But yeah, that's that's where we're going. That's where we're going Alex. I think we're on a we're on a good track. If you haven't seen Alex's before and after, go check those out. Was that on a story so it's not there anymore? Alex: Is it was honest. It's a it's it's a real. Like people can go see it. It is also an honest story, it's on both. Aaron: it's a real okay, good. And the the thing is too, is like, remember, it's been 40 days. I was at 40 days that that that you had posted that. Yeah, it's like, dude, it's like especially the grand scheme of thing, it's like such a small amount of time to see that those types of results is that's what I think we always have to remind ourselves, is it's not you Alex: Yeah. Aaron: haven't been doing it a a a super long time. Alex: But the further away you get, like I I'm happy that I have that picture. I was just like, man, we don't take enough pictures. Cause like that was me looking better than normal. Like b better than previous, like my bo Aaron: 'Cause you'd already started kind of kind of working out, yeah. Alex: I had already started, so I'm just like, my gosh, I wish I had the start start one, because then I'd be like, okay, Aaron: Tell me about it, dude. Alex: I can see. So another piece of advice for anyone who's like, if you're fat right now, take a picture of yourself with a shirt off. Just just so you have it. Even if you don't work out, Aaron: Yes, tons. Alex: at least you will have the picture if you do start working out. And like you'd be like, my Aaron: Yes. Alex: gosh, this this is life life changing. Look at like Aaron: Just especially content wise, if you ever want to be able to show people how what you came from, like it's a picture you keep for yourself. You don't have to show anybody if you don't want unless you want to start off with like, hey, this is how fat I am. I'm gonna start my journey now. That's cool too. But I was so ashamed of taking any sort of like shirt off picture. I have like zero, zero shirt off pictures of fat error and because I was fat and ashamed of it. Alex: Well d I don't like the one of the big things that got me started on this was when my son was born. I think I've already shared the story, but was the skin to skin picture. Like Katie was taking pictures of like me doing skin to skin. I was like, I don't love that Don't love Don't love how that looks. Love the child. Aaron: Look at that, look at that chubby little baby. Like, like no, I'm talking about you, Alex. Alex: Hey, that's that's me. So I and there's a part of me like I wish you Aaron: Whatever your motivation is. Alex: I was like I wish I wouldn't have been holding the baby so we could have got the full the full thing there. get out of here, child. God. Aaron: Yeah. Get the get the baby off. I get I got content to make. Yeah. Alex: Awesome. Well, thanks everybody for listening. Go be unsexy, and we'll chat with you all next week.
