- 0:16Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast.
- 0:19We're up to episode 15. Enjoyed as joined as per usual
- 0:23by Dean Menzies on a late Sunday evening in Perth.
- 0:27How you doing, Dean? Good mate, long weekend here.
- 0:30So yeah, pretty, pretty good for a Sunday night.
- 0:33Yes, we're making it work with the bank holiday in the in
- 0:37Perth, but we're also kind of under a bit of time pressure to
- 0:41get done for the F1, aren't we? So let's see how we get on
- 0:44because your man Oscar Piastri is on pole as well, so.
- 0:48Yeah, I must admit I pay a bit closer attention when when
- 0:51there's an an Aussie in the field.
- 0:52Little like someone doing well, I think there's heap of Brits
- 0:55not far behind him. What's their 33 Brits in the top
- 0:596? Maybe I've got that right.
- 1:01Yeah, so Lando straight up his backside, and then Russell was
- 1:04fourth maybe. And Hamilton's there
- 1:06thereabouts, isn't he? Yeah, he he did pretty well.
- 1:09And then not too far away from me and still in Europe, in
- 1:14Ireland, is Owen Smith. How are you, Sir?
- 1:17I'm. Great boys enjoying a bit of
- 1:19Irish sunshine for the next hour or two.
- 1:22I can see some Gray, Gray crowds, great clouds looming, so
- 1:26I'll just have to keep an eye on the washing that's out trying to
- 1:29dry. I might have to make it dart out
- 1:31if it starts raining. Bro no, I'm good.
- 1:33Good. Nice nice Sunday afternoon over
- 1:35in Ireland and public holiday there also coincidentally.
- 1:38Yeah, yeah, it's nice. So I'm off work to tomorrow.
- 1:42So yeah, just put the feet up. Try.
- 1:45My both the occasions. I haven't actually.
- 1:49Yeah. WA day, Yeah.
- 1:51It's just during bank holiday here.
- 1:53Yeah, and well, I mean, guess you could technically say it's
- 1:56public holiday for me as well, seeing as I'm unemployed right
- 1:59now or out of contract. What part?
- 2:01Of the world are you in Green Man what part of the.
- 2:04World are you in? Right.
- 2:04I'm in France, about 20 kilometers outside of Marseille,
- 2:09down on the southern coast in the coat the blue.
- 2:12Oh, gorgeous. Well, there's someone in a
- 2:16little a little French town called Sauce La Pont.
- 2:20You sound sound like you're slotted in well.
- 2:24Yeah, I'm just just picking up on all the local culture and not
- 2:27much of the local run in as as we'll then find out.
- 2:30Did you, did you get out last night for the Champions League
- 2:34finals? No, we, we didn't arrive till
- 2:36quite late, which I haven't got much running to talk about in my
- 2:39weekly recap. So I'm going to talk about other
- 2:42stuff and maybe that I'll explain that so we'll get to it.
- 2:45But I'm sure the locals in in Marseille here wouldn't have
- 2:49been too happy that PSG won because what's it called?
- 2:52PSG and Marseille? It's like a big not Derby, but
- 2:56it's shit. What's like El Classico is
- 2:59Barcelona, Madrid and PSG. Marseille is something as well.
- 3:02It's another big rivalry sort of thing.
- 3:04Yeah, they're like the traditional 2 arch rivals and
- 3:09Marseille haven't been great for a while, but still again a bit
- 3:12like Liverpool United where you know, too great.
- 3:16It's still a big rivalry. We won't talk about United,
- 3:20though. So running news then we best get
- 3:22into it because we've got quite a bit to cover off.
- 3:24We missed a couple of things last week because of the time at
- 3:28which we're recording. So there was Rabat Diamond
- 3:31League, which we won't go through the entirety of the
- 3:34results, but there are a couple of interesting things that I've
- 3:38picked up there. So in the women's 800 meters,
- 3:46not the top nine people ran qualifiers for worlds, which I
- 3:51don't know if this is usual or not, but I just thought like,
- 3:54geez, that's it's either pretty good going or it shows that the
- 3:57standard is maybe a little bit too soft.
- 3:59Because for nine people to run the standard from just one mete,
- 4:03I don't know, is that usual or not, But those women won't be
- 4:07complaining. So it's 159 the standard and
- 4:10you've got 157 winning at 157.42 and then all the way down to 9th
- 4:16is 158.97. So they've they've smashed it
- 4:20home there in the women's 3000 meters.
- 4:24I wanted to shout this out for you, Owen, because Sarah Healey
- 4:27was third in a time of 827 and I just looked up, that was the
- 4:32second fastest Irish time ever, behind only Sonia O'Sullivan,
- 4:37who we've referenced a few times because her daughter Sophie
- 4:40O'Sullivan is I think still or was with MTC during the summer
- 4:45anyway. So I mean, Sarah's no spring
- 4:48chicken now either, is she? So to still be running the PB.
- 4:52Sarah's around our age, but yeah, she's in that M11 track
- 4:57group where Kelly Hodgkinson and Georgia Bell.
- 5:01So she's like surrounded herself with like the best of the best.
- 5:04So when you do that, you're going to get results.
- 5:06But with with O'Sullivan, she is still in College in in America.
- 5:13So she's with Washington State or Washington some some
- 5:18university in Washington. So like on her spring breaks and
- 5:22when she's off on holiday, she comes to Australia to train on
- 5:24NTC. So she saw that half and half.
- 5:27Yeah, nice. And then in the eight, in the
- 5:30men's 800 meters, the guy in second was a British athlete,
- 5:34Max Bergen. He's around 143.34, which is
- 5:39obviously very quick in its own right.
- 5:41But then for context, that was his season opener so it could be
- 5:451 to watch for this season. They're opening in a 143 low and
- 5:50he's beaten like Emmanuel 1 Yoni 1 Yoni in 3rd who's obviously
- 5:55been going really well this year already.
- 5:57And that Max Bergen, isn't he like, renowned for like taking
- 6:00it out really, really hard? Yeah, I think he just hit jumps
- 6:03on the front and pumps it for as long as he can, doesn't he?
- 6:06Yeah, I think so, yeah. Pretty bold and brave ways to do
- 6:09it, but the guys clearly got the engine for it.
- 6:12And then finally, yeah, finally A shout out to both.
- 6:17Jude Thomas in the men's 1500 meters, he ran a time of 333
- 6:23which put him into the top ten of all time for Australia, I
- 6:26think maybe 9th. And then again, Owen, one of
- 6:30your countrymen was two places higher than him in 8th.
- 6:33Cath Al Doyle because is that if I said that right over butcher
- 6:37that. It's Carl.
- 6:39Oh yeah, butcher that completely.
- 6:42And yeah, he trained. And.
- 6:44Last Elliot Giles. OK, yeah.
- 6:47What's that? What's their group?
- 6:48I don't think the group has a name, but Elliot Giles has a
- 6:52YouTube channel which is pretty good.
- 6:55So yeah, we'll probably be a part of YouTube Diaries down the
- 6:57line. But yeah, they're another like
- 6:59good, a good running group and based in England.
- 7:02Do you recall from because was it Elliot Giles that got the
- 7:06light call up to the Olympics? Yeah.
- 7:08And that his YouTube, he on his YouTube channel, he sort of
- 7:13released like some of his reactions Sydney to when he was
- 7:16like when he found out. And I think he was, he was like,
- 7:20wasn't he camping with his family at altitude or do do you
- 7:23recall? He's camping in front remote and
- 7:27yeah, I think it was like 4 days before the Olympics he got the
- 7:30call. Like he had to actually
- 7:32initially he was camping somewhere and he's really
- 7:34crowded. So he moved camping spot.
- 7:36So he had to like pick up his tent, move it and then he got
- 7:39the call. So then like they had to pick it
- 7:41up again and just like go, I think find him at home or
- 7:43something. I don't know.
- 7:44But yeah, recently he's also trying to renovate his house.
- 7:49It's like he does everything himself.
- 7:50So it could like tile the bathroom, fix the floor, lower
- 7:53boards because he was injured for a little bit there.
- 7:56And so his YouTube it shows him like actually like doing the
- 8:00home DIY. It's pretty good.
- 8:02That's. Cool, in fact.
- 8:04You know, the way sometimes you have to kind of justify running
- 8:08related travel and like sell the other parts of it.
- 8:12Like, for example, if you might be going to a race in Japan, you
- 8:15can sell it to family about like, oh, well, we'll go and see
- 8:18Tokyo and we've got this to do and that to do Elliot Giles is
- 8:21prime example of it. There is like, Oh yeah, let's go
- 8:23on a family camping holiday, but coincidentally we're going to
- 8:27altitude to camp. Yeah.
- 8:30And yeah, his YouTube's class, isn't it.
- 8:33Maybe I should actually take some inspiration from that right
- 8:36now because I remember when he was injured he was still making
- 8:40videos about all of the cross training and swimming he was
- 8:43doing. He's like.
- 8:44Pretty raw in the sense that when he travels to, there you
- 8:48go. He's like pretty renounced, like
- 8:50low mileage. So traditionally he's like he
- 8:53got on where he is now. I'm doing like low mileage, like
- 8:57cross training a load when I was trying to like sort of
- 9:00transition that because like everything nowadays is like run
- 9:03more. So he's just trying to like do
- 9:04it on the transition of like sort of open the mileage.
- 9:07But it's obviously hard if you sort of pick up the Nagles here
- 9:10and there. You used to.
- 9:12Have you seen the thing? It's like literally like a cross
- 9:15trainer, but on two wheels. It's like a cross trainer on a
- 9:18bike. It's called elliptical.
- 9:20Yeah, it's like elliptical it. Looks so fun.
- 9:23Maybe the way to get around Paris, then around France.
- 9:29He he often records like all the the ship parts of it, if you
- 9:34like, like the crappy little hotels that they have to stay in
- 9:37and jump him from a flight to a train and a bus and the constant
- 9:43non-stop nature of it. And it makes you appreciate
- 9:46like, fuck, these guys are operating at like the highest
- 9:48level and the logistical obstacles that they have to
- 9:51navigate and they still manage to stay like so fit and managed
- 9:55to peek at like the exact at the right time.
- 9:58It's pretty impressive. But yeah, shout out to Elliott
- 10:01Charles YouTube channel there. We've just done YouTube Diaries
- 10:04early on, but there we are. More things from last week.
- 10:07I wanted to mention. The firstly was Connor Mance
- 10:10winning that boulder to boulder 10K for the third year in a row
- 10:13in 2820. So we beat the world 2023 silver
- 10:20medalist in the 10,000 meters there.
- 10:22And did you see the clips of how far from how far back he came
- 10:27in, like the last mile? It's absolutely outrageous.
- 10:29Yeah, just chlorine him, chlorine him back.
- 10:32And it looks like, is that like a, is it like plastic, like like
- 10:36a temporary surface that they finish on that he's like skating
- 10:40around as he's trying to overtake him?
- 10:41It's like the thing they put on like, like pitches when there's
- 10:45concerts in the stadium. Yeah, you finish on that in the
- 10:49Melbourne Running Festival because you finish on on the MCG
- 10:53and they don't want the turf to get destroyed.
- 10:55Yeah, I think it was the same in Perth running festival.
- 10:58OK, Yeah. But yeah.
- 11:00Yeah, and it was like a full on U-turn as well.
- 11:03Wasn't it in the last like 100 meters?
- 11:06Yeah, knows how to win, doesn't he?
- 11:08Or knows how to put himself in a in the competition for like, you
- 11:13know, he's like not someone that you want to be racing with a
- 11:16mile to go do. No, it's nice to see that grift
- 11:19and determination like finally pay off because he got done on
- 11:22the line, didn't he, when he ran the the half marathon record for
- 11:26for the US and then obviously like went into a really tough
- 11:31battle at the front of Boston and ended up like coming out on
- 11:35the wrong side of it. If you like him finishing 4th
- 11:37and missing out on the podium. And then it's finally went his
- 11:41way here and being able to claw that crazy deficit.
- 11:45And lastly, the thing that I had on the cards from last week was
- 11:49there was a Ottawa marathon, which is in Canada and Rory
- 11:54Linklater ran there, finished second and two O 831.
- 11:59And the just the point I wanted to make was a decent appearance
- 12:03fee just to turn up to this for him to do it because he'd ran
- 12:07Boston himself not so long ago, hasn't he?
- 12:09So to turn around and get on the start line again so quickly, I
- 12:13mean, he's obviously ran an unbelievable race to run 2O8,
- 12:17but then he's inevitably he'll be doing well since September.
- 12:20So I'm just thinking he must have got a nice payday for that
- 12:24surely? Definitely and it is at home
- 12:27marathon, so Tory's national marathon championships and so we
- 12:31definitely would have gotten a nice bit of cash for joining it.
- 12:33And that moves us on to the results from this week then.
- 12:36So we'll start straight away with the Launceston, the McGrath
- 12:41Launceston Running Festival. I don't know either of you guys
- 12:45are a little bit better placed than I to talk about these
- 12:48results. Yeah, I can.
- 12:50I have watched a chunk of the strain this morning.
- 12:53So that was on. Yeah.
- 12:57So that's rundown in, in Tassie. And I think the weather was
- 13:00pretty good from all reports. I think it was like close to 0°
- 13:04and at least it didn't look too windy from what I could see.
- 13:09And in terms of the history, like the the event, the key
- 13:12event used to be the 10K event. So I ran the 10K or when we ran
- 13:17the 10K last year, yeah. And that was, that was certainly
- 13:22the deeper, deeper event. I think they were, they were
- 13:25promoting the half marathon last year.
- 13:27But certainly the the one that got a lot of the attention and
- 13:31tends to attract the deeper field, albeit only a domestic
- 13:34field, was the 10K. But they were trying to build it
- 13:38with the aim of making it into what it was this year, which was
- 13:41like a gold label event for the half marathon.
- 13:44And as a result of it being a gold label event, it gets a lot
- 13:47of ranking points for athletes, which is important, but it also
- 13:50as a requirement, I think the organizers need to get a certain
- 13:53caliber of athlete into the event.
- 13:56And they did quite a good job in terms of getting some
- 13:59international athletes, like largely Japanese runners come
- 14:02over for it, which made the event really good.
- 14:05But maybe if I start with the 10K results and build to the
- 14:09half marathon results. So the 10K was after the half
- 14:12marathon and in the women's it was Ruby Smee was first in 3257,
- 14:19Jenny Blundell 3327 and Kate Spencer in 3334.
- 14:24So I think they were together for a chunk of the race.
- 14:26It looked pretty competitive, at least early on, like there was a
- 14:31group of women running together whereas on the men's side Stewie
- 14:35Mcswain one in 2758 and then it was James Hansen 2nd 2847 and
- 14:41Matt Buckle in 29 O 8. Cool that first and second in
- 14:44the men's were both Tassies. So good representation by the
- 14:49Tassie men. Can I just give a little shout
- 14:51out in that mail? Thank you.
- 14:54When I was in Brisbane I trained with this group called Distance
- 14:57Culture and I call Nick Dwar and he ran the 10K there last night
- 15:03or last night for me this morning and he ran a 37 second
- 15:08PB to run thirty O 7. Oh wow.
- 15:12So yeah, phenomenal run from Nick.
- 15:16I probably have to get those results up, but it looked like
- 15:19there was a whole group of guys all finishing around the same
- 15:22time. So a bit like so when I ran it
- 15:25last year, there was a group of us.
- 15:27We all finished thirty oh, between 30.
- 15:29Oh, something can say 3012 like 8 of us or something.
- 15:33And it looked similar again this year.
- 15:34There was sort of the first few guys like Stewie just went was
- 15:39was in quite made quite a gap early and then so did James
- 15:42Hansen was sort of behind him. And from about the 2930, which
- 15:47may have been 2920 because I think that the clock, what the
- 15:50clock was showing and what the actual official times were read
- 15:54about 10 seconds or 12 seconds different.
- 15:56I think Owen, you had a bit more insight as to what actually
- 15:59happened there. Yeah, I heard like a hooter went
- 16:01off a couple of seconds before the actual race started.
- 16:04So there was a slight time difference between like the gun
- 16:07time and the net time. But I think they fixed the
- 16:09results now and. But yeah, that could have been
- 16:11messed up the splits initially. Yeah, because I think when I
- 16:14will watching the live stream, the commentators with the 1st 2K
- 16:17Stewie went through was like close to 6 minutes, which didn't
- 16:20seem right. And but then and then when he
- 16:22crossed the line, it was reading around 2810, which I think his
- 16:26PB was 2804. So given you'd sort of hadn't
- 16:29heard much from him, like pretty cool that he's come out, he's
- 16:34still able to come out and run a PB and I think just talks to the
- 16:36course like it is just such a like if you were to create a
- 16:41list of Australian running events to target each year, like
- 16:46it just I just think this event in terms of the depth, the depth
- 16:50of field and the quality of the event.
- 16:52Like it's a fast course with good weather like the elevation
- 16:56profile and a deep field. Like it has to be like one of
- 16:59the wants to seek out like Gold Coast.
- 17:02I think the course profiles are amazing and the depth of fields
- 17:05amazing, but you're still running at weather.
- 17:08That's not it doesn't compare, I don't think, to the Launceston
- 17:11weather. Yeah, Launceston is just, it's
- 17:14got everything for a good race, like temperature, flat course on
- 17:17stacked field, like when you've done three, it just makes for a
- 17:20great race. Yeah, it has to be 1 to target,
- 17:23I think next year for sure. I might target it next year, fly
- 17:26back over. Yes, really not.
- 17:30Yeah, because Matt Hanson, have you seen his?
- 17:33Does he has a YouTube? Series do.
- 17:36You remember him. Yeah, he he's based in America
- 17:41in college, isn't he? Yeah, yeah, he runs.
- 17:44He runs 14 low for 5K. Yeah, he so he ran 30.
- 17:48A couple thresholds, guys. Yeah, he.
- 17:51Is yeah, so I ran, I raced with him last year and we must have,
- 17:54he must have run maybe at the same time because we ran
- 17:57together last year. And so when I saw his, I could
- 18:02see his sort of profile as he was running towards the the
- 18:05finishing shoot. So yeah, he's obviously finished
- 18:09just ahead of of your men. Can I just say, as you mentioned
- 18:13him, he's, I went to one of the FTK live shows once when I was
- 18:17living in Melbourne and he must have been, I don't know if he's
- 18:22has connections to Melbourne or what, but he was there anyway.
- 18:25And Joel Tobin White was like, Oh no, this guy's in the crowd.
- 18:30Like he's, he's going to be heckling me and mocking me all
- 18:33throughout. And he just, he couldn't wait to
- 18:35like, put his hand up at certain points and like question things
- 18:39and like add in his own opinion here and there.
- 18:42So that was where I picked up on that guy.
- 18:44And then I seen his YouTube and stuff on the back of that.
- 18:47But yeah, he's he seems like good entertainment as well as a
- 18:50good runner. Funny, funny you mentioned that
- 18:53at that 10K last year. So I think I was like running in
- 18:57a pack with Matt and we ran past.
- 18:59I don't think Joel Tobin White was having a particularly good
- 19:02day. And he was there was the front,
- 19:04there was the front group and we ran past and then Matt turned to
- 19:08Joel and said like, come on, Joel, hop on, might get
- 19:11something out of it or something like that.
- 19:13And clearly like Joel wasn't in the I don't think Joel was in
- 19:17the the mood to like, I don't think he was prepared to rally.
- 19:20So he just copped a drive by of a bit of a backhanded compliment
- 19:24as he's just blown up early in the race.
- 19:26So found that amusing. How's Joel's running going?
- 19:30Because I haven't listened to much podcasts in general since
- 19:33I've gotten back, but how's he getting on?
- 19:37We should, I don't know. I mean, it's Brett's coaching if
- 19:40it's not going well, right? But is he?
- 19:43Is he kind of put his training on the podcast?
- 19:45I don't know, have you listened, Ryan?
- 19:47I've been listening to the the fall guys to to be honest, and I
- 19:51did enjoy listening to the for the Kudos podcast.
- 19:54But I, I, I think I heard again on the live stream today, I was
- 19:57running around listening to and I mentioned that he was maybe
- 20:00doing, he was maybe alongside the road at one point.
- 20:03So maybe he's doing a long run while he was down there.
- 20:05So. I don't think he was racing
- 20:07today, but that's about all I know.
- 20:08I have listened to it but mate, perhaps not for a couple of
- 20:11weeks. I think he was due to do
- 20:14Ballarat half wasn't he? And then he ended up with some
- 20:18like I can't remember what it was now, but he got injured in
- 20:21like literally the week prior to it.
- 20:23I think before that his training was going pretty well.
- 20:26So he's maybe going to be in decent shape at Ballarat and
- 20:30then like as with anything, one thing leads to another and then
- 20:34like a little bit of sickness and stuff.
- 20:35So I don't know, I think he's trying to target Gold Coast
- 20:39Marathon, but that's going to come around pretty quickly from
- 20:44from now. So I don't know, I haven't heard
- 20:46the past few weeks to be. Fair enough.
- 20:48Shall we move on to the half marathon?
- 20:51So in the women in the women's race, Jess Stenson won in 6951
- 21:00and then Yumi Yoshikara was second in 7043 and Caitlin Adams
- 21:05in 3rd in 7141. So on the live stream, I think
- 21:10the three top three ladies were all running together, at least
- 21:14for the 1st 30 something minutes I think.
- 21:16And then you could see sort of Jess starting to stretch away a
- 21:20little bit. And I think, yeah, the race sort
- 21:23of just broke up from from there.
- 21:27It looked like it was again, like some good internationals
- 21:30that were sort of making the race competitive.
- 21:32But it always looked like Jess was always in the front of the
- 21:35group and looked pretty in control.
- 21:38And yeah, pretty pretty fast times running under 70 minutes
- 21:41for 1/2. Do you know if so do you know at
- 21:43the 10K you start like on the outside of the city and you run
- 21:48along the motorway do U-turn and come back in?
- 21:50Is the half like the same course or what is?
- 21:54That yeah, sorry, I was trying to work out from watching it,
- 21:59like because I I'd heard that they'd removed a hill that was
- 22:02there last year, but it was hard for me to hard for me to tell,
- 22:06to be honest. But it definitely didn't look
- 22:09very what like wasn't like they were making many turns.
- 22:13So I think they must have continued out along that road.
- 22:16It looked like it's still finished, you know, as you come
- 22:18back in on that 10K road, like it looks like you're still
- 22:21coming back in on that out and back stretch.
- 22:24Yeah, yeah. I don't know why, but you know
- 22:26how they just you know where we come in and you do 2 right angle
- 22:29turns. So for the 10K and what makes
- 22:32this course so good is you're running on this like 4 lane
- 22:36highway and you're literally just going out chucking a UE and
- 22:40it's a pretty large U-turn as well.
- 22:42And then on the way back, so it has one major turn and then two
- 22:45right angle turns and then you're on the finishing shoot.
- 22:47It's like really, really well designed or chosen course.
- 22:51But for the half they go just past that finishing shoot and
- 22:55instead of chucking the right angle, like turn in there, you
- 22:58know, they go just past, then Chuck AU turn and then come back
- 23:00in. To make the.
- 23:02Latest Do you remember saying that?
- 23:04Yeah, it doesn't make sense. Yeah, they they still have that.
- 23:08And I'm like, it's so unnecessary.
- 23:09It's like in the last kilometre of the race, everyone's wrecked
- 23:12and you're having to basically like stop and run around that
- 23:15turn. I just feel like it's just just
- 23:17like it's like you, you're going part you, you're sighting the
- 23:20finish line, missing it, and you're having to slow down for
- 23:23AU turn. It'd be nice if they nitpicking,
- 23:25but it'd be nice if they got rid of that.
- 23:26That's the only fault on the well, it's not the most scenic
- 23:28course either. Like you're just putting a lot
- 23:30more away, but you're going drunk.
- 23:32Yeah, you don't care about that. No.
- 23:34And I guess yeah. And maybe just a comment on the
- 23:37like the men's time. So like the top three, I think
- 23:40there was 14 men under 65 minutes.
- 23:44The winner was is it Tariqi Shimada in 6112, then Isaac
- 23:48Hayne from SA was 6113 and then Brett Robinson, who I think was
- 23:54trying to go for a four peat. I think he'd won Launceston at
- 23:56least the 10K the last three years.
- 23:59Or maybe he won the half last year.
- 24:01Yeah, sorry. He won the half last year and
- 24:02then maybe the 10 the two years prior, but in he was third in
- 24:056120. Yeah.
- 24:08Is that but in Is that a bit of a shower by Isaac Hain there to
- 24:13finish second in that field at 6130?
- 24:16And it's a massive time, isn't it?
- 24:18Yeah, he he just seems to be like built for the half marathon
- 24:21because he actually never went out of the bag and goal posts as
- 24:25well. And then I feel he dropped down
- 24:27to like a few 5 KS and he just, he didn't perform as well as he
- 24:30did in the half as they built for the marathon sort of
- 24:32distances. Yeah, So did he, because was he
- 24:35second to Andy Buchanan in the Gold Coast half last year at,
- 24:38yeah, Gold Coast Marathon? I think those guys were duking
- 24:41it out with all the Japanese contingent last year.
- 24:44And I think Isaac ran really well.
- 24:46So yeah, like seems really good at that, you know, threshold
- 24:50hour running. When you look at the results
- 24:52list there, like just the names he's beating, he's obviously
- 24:54beating Brett and 3rd. Then Liam Boudin is obviously
- 24:58just run unbelievable marathon. Sam Clifford, like you know what
- 25:01he's been doing this year and the 20. 738.
- 25:05And Greg? Yeah, yeah, super stacked.
- 25:08But yeah, I think you wouldn't if you were to try.
- 25:11And if you were laying odds before the race as to who the
- 25:13first Aussie was, you. I mean, I don't think you'd
- 25:16probably even have him in your top three, would you?
- 25:18No, I'd say so. I'm clever and disappointed with
- 25:20that results. Yeah, if you run the Australian
- 25:23record, road, 10K record, right, and he's a Tasmanian, you would,
- 25:28I reckon, Yeah, he would have been.
- 25:30And he was looking really good to be honest, through halfway.
- 25:33But yeah, those guys were, it was a really good race, like so
- 25:37in the last. So it was streamed through, you
- 25:40could watch it through the like their Facebook page had a live
- 25:44stream, which they often do, which was really good and great
- 25:47commentary. But yeah, it was sort of pretty
- 25:50close. There was a Japanese pacemaker
- 25:52that sort of set the race up and they were going for, is it Pat
- 25:55Carroll, I think has the Australian all comers record,
- 25:58which is 6111, which if they didn't have to do that shitty
- 26:01U-turn towards the end, they probably run because they, yeah,
- 26:05won in 6112. But the race there was probably
- 26:098 or 8 to 10 of them together through halfway set up with a
- 26:12pacemaker. And then there was, I think that
- 26:16included say 3 or 4 Japanese. And then, yeah, those Aussies
- 26:20that you mentioned, Ryan, and it was just, yeah, it was just a
- 26:23really well set up race. It looked like, it looked like a
- 26:26lot of fun. And then even beyond that, there
- 26:28was a lot of good depth, which is cool.
- 26:30So I mean this what happens when you, when you have so much
- 26:33success, then when you don't have a great run, people are
- 26:36like, oh, that's a bad run. How's that happened?
- 26:39So what, how did Andy end up running 6242?
- 26:43Obviously he wouldn't be too happy with that either.
- 26:45I was actually asking Dean about this and sort of like, I think
- 26:49you're now on the head team. Yeah, I just thought Log is
- 26:52probably hard, Like he's only five weeks after London Marathon
- 26:57and so I don't know what he's done, what he would have done
- 26:59for the two weeks after. But if you're freshening into
- 27:02London and then having a couple of weeks of jogging, he's only
- 27:05realistically trained for three weeks.
- 27:07Like it's a pretty short turn around, like.
- 27:10And so, yeah, it's really interesting.
- 27:12Like you say, Brett, who just paced at London, ran a good 10K
- 27:16staying on in London and sort of trained consistently since
- 27:19Maragami when he ran 62 minutes or 61 high.
- 27:22And what did Andy run like 60-30?
- 27:25But then Andy sort of peaked for a race and now so they're only
- 27:28just coming back. Like you could see Andy was
- 27:30like, you know when you can see like if you're all red and pink,
- 27:33like where you're just working really hard.
- 27:35He looked like he was like falling off the back a bit after
- 27:37about 20 minutes, and then maybe 20, maybe 10 to 15 minutes
- 27:42later, it's sort of falling off the back.
- 27:44I just think it's hard to sort of, yeah, turn your fitness
- 27:47around that quickly and get yourself into peak shape.
- 27:50I mean you maybe get yourself into decent shape but like peak
- 27:53shapes hard. Well, I mean, look at me
- 27:55Saturday being critical, like Andy ran a marathon the same day
- 27:59I ran my marathon. And if you tell me I would run a
- 28:03half marathon today, 2 minutes off my personal best, I'd be
- 28:07pretty happy with it and wouldn't be too happy with
- 28:09someone telling me it was a shit run.
- 28:13So. The I mean, Speaking of people
- 28:16that were able to turn it around, so two guys that I that
- 28:19we raced at Ballarat, so Fraser Darcy and Matt Schaumburg, those
- 28:25guys, they were 14th and 15th and they ran 6455 and 65 O 1.
- 28:30So that's possibly PBS for them. So they were able to, you know,
- 28:33turn things around pretty quickly.
- 28:35Yeah, well, well, Fraser ran a marathon the week after as well,
- 28:38didn't he? Yeah, he did.
- 28:39But that was Launceston. Shall I cover off on the Leonora
- 28:43Golden gift? Yeah, Tell, tell us about this
- 28:45because I'm, I'm intrigued because I know it's got a bit of
- 28:48a different set up and background, doesn't it?
- 28:50It's a bit of a one off this me. Yeah, I think RAF and we really
- 28:56need to get RAF to, you know, it's better coming from the
- 28:59horse's mouth. But it's a race in like, yeah,
- 29:04in Leonora, which is a bit of a, it's a gold mining town in
- 29:09regional WA. And the race, I think RAF was I
- 29:14think involved in sort of the, in sort of sowing the seeds to
- 29:18sort of get this race off the ground, which is just attracting
- 29:21sort of people to the town. And they have a mix of elite
- 29:24races as well as like some open races for locals to get involved
- 29:29in. And it's just a, it's a fun
- 29:31weekend of racing that they do up and down the the main strip
- 29:34in Leonora. And I think what they do in
- 29:37terms of the event is they get a lot of like young, talented
- 29:40elite athletes into the town. And I think they do try and
- 29:43immerse them into the community a bit.
- 29:45And so I think it's a really seen as a really positive sort
- 29:48of community event, which is really nice.
- 29:50And I think one of the major miners sort of gets behind the
- 29:53event and they put on fairly substantial prize money
- 29:58throughout the event. So there's a whole series of
- 30:00races from like you have like AI think there's like a 400 meter
- 30:04steel cap boot dash, like 600 meter Sprint, open mile, elite
- 30:08miles. And then they used to have
- 30:10cycling races. I don't know if they still keep
- 30:12the cycling events, but they make it a real spectacle and
- 30:15it's a real fun, I think event run over the couple of days and
- 30:20it's it's these short circuit Rd. races.
- 30:22So it's sort of every 200 metres you're doing this hairpin
- 30:25U-turn. So times aren't really relevant.
- 30:28It's really just about competing against each other.
- 30:31And they historically and continued to attract really good
- 30:35fields, which is cool. What?
- 30:37What do you reckon? Yes, 400 meters in steel tow cup
- 30:42Beatson. I know Matt Smith's won that one
- 30:46before SO, but I must admit I don't spend much time in the
- 30:50steel cap so I'm probably not well qualified.
- 30:54I wonder how how they how they compare on a scale compared to
- 30:58like a pair of alpha flies or something.
- 31:00Yeah. Probably not.
- 31:03Yeah, similar weight to the alpha fly, but less responsive
- 31:07there, I say. And Runners Tribe always like
- 31:12there's always a dream through runners tribe.
- 31:15And RAF is typically the the MC for the day and does a great job
- 31:19in terms of giving people an insight into all the different
- 31:22athletes that are that are racing.
- 31:24Did you manage to catch it live on the stream or?
- 31:28Yeah, I watched. The.
- 31:30Women's and men's finals. So the heats were on yesterday
- 31:34and then the finals were on today.
- 31:38Aaron yeah, you got the F1 on there or what there's?
- 31:42Some There's a lot of noise. This You know what's making the
- 31:46sound? The noises.
- 31:47Can you? Could you hear that right?
- 31:49Yeah, it's like, right, Right. Imagine the birds I.
- 31:54Think it was it was it was Martin Brundle's grid walk, I
- 31:57think I. Didn't have it on.
- 32:05It won't start until. No, all right.
- 32:10But yeah, so the women's race was one the the women's field
- 32:15seemed like an open field. I think Georgia Wincup was maybe
- 32:19earmarked by Raffeny's as as as maybe one to watch.
- 32:24But the winner was Zoe Milhush in 442 and she beat home
- 32:31Stephanie Kelly in 445 and Georgia Wincup in 453.
- 32:38So names that are probably less familiar, at least in recent
- 32:43times, but we did do some digging.
- 32:48We did do some digging in terms of recent form.
- 32:50And they all competed in Perth at the 1500 meter, in Perth at
- 32:56the Aussie Champs in the 1500 meters.
- 32:59And Stephanie Kelly finished 8th in the final, 100th of a second
- 33:04in front of Georgia, who was ninth in the final.
- 33:07And Zoe, who ended up winning and taking home 7 1/2 grand.
- 33:12Well, actually, it's probably 7 1/2 grand in a gold nugget.
- 33:15She actually didn't make the final in the 1500s at nationals.
- 33:19So she was run out of the heats in in in 12th.
- 33:22So dare I say a bit of an upset. Maybe it's just hit a hit a hit
- 33:27form later in the season, but pretty cool payday for for Zoe,
- 33:31which is which is really cool. And I think part of what that
- 33:34event's about. It's sort of unearthing young
- 33:36talent and it's and it's yeah. And it's in, from what RAF
- 33:42explains, a really fun event for people to get connected to
- 33:46Australian culture. Or for, for British or Irish
- 33:51listeners where you say 7 1/2 grand and a golden nugget,
- 33:55they'll be thinking they get a box of golden Nuggets like the
- 33:59cereal. But as you, as you explained,
- 34:03it's an, it's an actual gold mine in town.
- 34:06And this is a a physical piece of gold, like how big in size?
- 34:10Like you your fingernail or something?
- 34:13Yeah, I think so. It's about 2 ounces of gold and
- 34:16I think what is it? What's an ounce of gold?
- 34:182000 something Aussie at the minute.
- 34:20Yeah, so it's, it's a little bit more than a box of cereal, isn't
- 34:25it? Yeah, so I think it's about 55
- 34:27grand. Aussie in gold.
- 34:28Question, if you lose 1 would you get rid of the gold straight
- 34:32away or would you hold on to it? I'd push it in.
- 34:35The gold keeps appreciating. Yeah, it would.
- 34:36Depend on it would depend on my financial status in that moment.
- 34:40I'd like to say I would keep it because it'd be be pretty cool
- 34:44to keep a piece of gold, wouldn't it?
- 34:46And obviously it would always be from a race that you'd run,
- 34:49you'd won rather. But yeah, it depends how badly
- 34:52you need 5 grand at the time could come in handy.
- 34:55Yeah. Yeah, I'll probably hold on to
- 34:58it as well. I think Sinead, do you remember
- 35:00Sinead Noonan? Yeah, Now Freiburg, she, she won
- 35:04one during COVID, I think. So I wonder if she still has her
- 35:09nugget. But yes, on to the men's race.
- 35:13The men's race was an exciting race.
- 35:16So the the way it actually went out was Max Shervington.
- 35:23So Perth guy who was mentioned just qualified for like World
- 35:27Uni Games and is and is 1. I think he won the Perth 15103 K
- 35:33and 5K this year. So in some pretty good form, he
- 35:36sort of led, he led it out and it was a really hot 1st 400.
- 35:40I think the first 400 was in 60 seconds, 1st 800 maybe in two
- 35:44flat, which when you're doing a like when you're stopping
- 35:47essentially every 200 meters or not quite every 200 because
- 35:51you're during that long stretch, you go past the start finish.
- 35:54But when you're doing a heap of U turns, it was a pretty brisk
- 35:57start. And who followed him were Peat
- 36:00Bowl, Adam Goddard, Matt and Matt Ramsdon.
- 36:04And Brad, is it Mel Hoose, they sort of followed.
- 36:08They followed Max's move. And then there was another group
- 36:12which Tom Moorcroft and others were in.
- 36:16And so Ethan White Smith and a whole whole host of others and
- 36:21all the rest of the the final eight.
- 36:23But Max started to pay a pay some pretty heavy tax maybe
- 36:27after about 8-9 hundred meters. And that's when Pete, Adam and
- 36:32Rammstein sort of started to press ahead.
- 36:34And yeah, basically at one point, maybe with 300 to go,
- 36:40Matt tried to make a bit of a move, but Pete sort of covered
- 36:43all of it. Adam Goddard was sort of never
- 36:45looked like he was about to fall off.
- 36:48And then it just was probably in the last two 250 meters.
- 36:51Pete just looked too good and just had too much wheels.
- 36:54And I think he still had time to basically look over his shoulder
- 36:56and celebrate. And so he came in in four O 643.
- 37:00Adam Goddard second in four O 680 and Branson was four O 733.
- 37:06And yeah, Tom Warcroft was one of the best of the rest.
- 37:09He was home 5th in in 415. What would that 415 equate to in
- 37:18just a straight up mile race on the track?
- 37:20Yeah, I'm not, I don't. It's hard, right?
- 37:22I mean, I'd say at least 10 seconds I reckon.
- 37:25I reckon it's probably like 1011 seconds, right?
- 37:29Like I mean, four O 6 is what Pete ran.
- 37:32I mean 355 maybe makes sense. He's just run 143 to win
- 37:36National 800 meters. So maybe something like that
- 37:39That's good. Running.
- 37:41Yeah, but 406 around those U turns is like flying like.
- 37:45What? Yeah, they're turning how how
- 37:47long is it to 400 meter loop? Four.
- 37:49Yeah, well, it's, they start halfway up the loop and then
- 37:52they're running 200 meters. U-turn.
- 37:54Turn. And so they're turning every
- 37:56400, but then in the last 1st 202 hundred, yeah.
- 38:00That's right. Yeah.
- 38:01So I don't know if it's like 6 U turns, maybe somewhere between
- 38:034:00 and 6:00 U turns, but that's so it's rapid what they
- 38:06ran for that. Yeah, it's not even like a test
- 38:09of obviously it is a test of fitness, but it's also be so
- 38:13much more tough on your muscles to accelerate out of those turns
- 38:17every single time. Isn't it like Pete has obviously
- 38:20won because he's ran the fastest time, but doesn't necessarily
- 38:24mean he's the the fittest and the fastest to run a mile on the
- 38:28track on the day? He might just be a bit more
- 38:31conditioned, but I mean, he probably is because he's been
- 38:35going really well this year. But yeah, I was just thinking
- 38:37about having to accelerate out of those turns every single
- 38:41time. It'd just blow your quads up,
- 38:42wouldn't it? Yeah, I think that's a bit of a.
- 38:45To Max, that's happened to Max as well, like he was going well
- 38:47and just I'd say you just accelerating too much out of the
- 38:50turns and it just built up the lactic.
- 38:53And it's a good point you made Owen just around his choice to
- 38:57his choice to race, like Pete's choice to race because he so he
- 39:01ran in the most recent Grand Slam track meet.
- 39:05Is that right? He ran in where was it?
- 39:09Philadelphia's this today, and it was Florida before he would
- 39:13run through Miami. Yeah, Miami.
- 39:15Yeah, that's right, Miami, FL Yeah, because the F1 was on.
- 39:20So he turned down the payday for some local, local race, which is
- 39:25cool. Got him back to Perth.
- 39:26So was Pete, was he injured for like the pretty much the
- 39:29entirety of last year? I think for a chunk of it
- 39:32because he was on like one of those celebrity shows, so he
- 39:34must have been injured for at least a part of it.
- 39:37And then already he's got at least 30 grand from Grand Slam
- 39:43at least like 1012 grand or whatever from today, amongst
- 39:47anything else he's done this year.
- 39:49He's he's going to be making a decent amount of money from his
- 39:52career this year. It's funny because when you said
- 39:54he's on one of those celebrity shows, I went to the Australian
- 39:58Open last year and there was like, who?
- 40:01Did you message? Now that there was a bit out of
- 40:05my league that one, my messages to Novak are still unread,
- 40:09unfortunately. That's good.
- 40:12They had this like exhibition type event with Djokovic called
- 40:16Novak and friends and like him and Sabalenko were like playing
- 40:20informally and they were miked up.
- 40:23It was dead cool because you think Novak's quite boring or
- 40:27he's a little bit mustard. Like obviously all the stuff
- 40:29with COVID pissed some people off and made some people like
- 40:32him and whatever. But he was, he had such a good
- 40:35personality when he had the mic on, like he was a good, good
- 40:38crowd entertainer. So then he brought out like,
- 40:42who's the Australian batsman Steve Smith?
- 40:44He brought out. Some basketballer and then Pete
- 40:48Ball was one of the people who came out and him and Novak were
- 40:52doing like shuttle runs on the tennis court, like racing
- 40:56against each other. But yeah, it's it's mad he's
- 41:00gone from doing stuff like that to being back competing at the
- 41:02highest level. Bit of talent.
- 41:04Well, we move. From the results entirely, and
- 41:08this is just Ryan back with a little insight to talk about
- 41:11Grand Slam Track because when we recorded, the results weren't
- 41:14finalized. So you may know Sistina now and
- 41:17don't have too much to say about these results, but that's
- 41:20because they're not actually here.
- 41:22But I didn't want to put the podcast out without these
- 41:24results because it's kind of like a big part of the weekend
- 41:27that's just been. So it was the 3rd rendition of
- 41:30Grand Slam Track, this time hosted in Philadelphia at
- 41:34Franklin Field at the University of Philadelphia.
- 41:37So this is one of the most historic venues in track and
- 41:39field and one of the oldest in the US.
- 41:43So it's been going for over 125 years home of the Pen Relays.
- 41:47And it's just looks very cool the way it's set out and kind of
- 41:52like got a collegiate feel. And then obviously you're
- 41:55throwing into the mix all the elite athletes.
- 41:57I think Grand Slam have done very well in choosing this
- 42:00location because the crowd as well, they used to see in high
- 42:05quality athletics and they're obviously tuned into elite level
- 42:08athletics. So they get really good
- 42:11engagement from the crowd. And what's also interesting
- 42:13about this was it has a unique layout this track.
- 42:17So the 400 meter lap is ran in lane 4, which means that was
- 42:22quite bizarre to watch. But for the 800, for example,
- 42:25when traditionally all the athletes would start obviously
- 42:29in this heated lanes and then they merge after, is it like 100
- 42:33meters or so? They merge into obviously the
- 42:35inside lane and run, run the race there.
- 42:38But for this one, they merge into lane 4.
- 42:41So that means that the athletes who started in lanes 1-2 and
- 42:45three have to move over to their right.
- 42:47And obviously the athletes who are in 5678 move across as
- 42:51normal, but they're not all moving to the actual inside
- 42:54rail. They're all moving to the 4th
- 42:57lane, which is quite bizarre. But again, it made for interest
- 43:00in viewing. So the the.
- 43:02Changes in the in the location of the track also coincide added
- 43:06with some changes to the actual event format.
- 43:09So they listened. Grand Slam claimed they listened
- 43:12to feedback from both the athletes and spectators.
- 43:16So with three meets in now and they've condensed the format
- 43:19from three days to two days to try and streamline the agenda
- 43:23and enhance the spectators experience.
- 43:26So it's just a little bit more consumable just being over those
- 43:29two days. So how they've done this was
- 43:31they removed the 5000 meters from the distance event, which
- 43:35meant that in the long distance there was only a 3000m race.
- 43:39So on the back of that, they also have the prize money in
- 43:42this discipline. So instead of the athletes
- 43:45winning 100K for 1st, 50K per second and so on, it was half
- 43:50SO50K first, 25K per second. But if you think about all's
- 43:54they're doing for that is run 10 up, running one 3000 meters,
- 43:57then I guess it's not so bad. But there was 1 notable
- 44:01absentee. The guy who's been cleaning up
- 44:03Grant Fisher, he didn't turn up for this one.
- 44:06Tried to find out whether he was injured or not.
- 44:09It doesn't seem like there's anything out there about him
- 44:11being injured. So it's potentially a
- 44:13combination of whether so he's won 200 two 100,000 in the past
- 44:16six or so weeks. So a potential 50,000 isn't
- 44:21enough to outweigh the risks of him and a balance this season so
- 44:25that you can re peak again at the right times.
- 44:28So this sounds like some clever planning from Fisher and his
- 44:32team there, But that also gave the opportunity to some of the
- 44:34other athletes, which we'll we'll get to when we when I talk
- 44:38through the results. And the other thing with this
- 44:40was I didn't actually watch any of it live and that's been a
- 44:44negative of some of the other. The first one in Kingston and in
- 44:49Miami, obviously with the time difference there, it's quite
- 44:52hard. But also with the three day
- 44:55thing, there's like there's racing on all the time.
- 44:57You don't really know when to tune in because you don't really
- 45:00want to sit there for hours on end watching potentially had
- 45:03those races and stuff. What you're not too fussed
- 45:05about. So they've actually put out
- 45:08these extended highlight reels on YouTube.
- 45:10So they're around 13 to 15 minutes long and they've been
- 45:15put together really well. So it's been obviously cropped
- 45:18from start to finish. You've got Steve Crown, I think
- 45:20it is on the commentary. It's almost like a match of the
- 45:24day or just like a really good summary of each day.
- 45:28So there's a day one, one and a day 2/1 and yeah, it just cuts
- 45:32to kind of like the last lap of each discipline, regardless of
- 45:35what it is really, which you think for a three 3000 or
- 45:39potentially you're not seeing the full picture of the race.
- 45:42But with the way that these have been run, they've literally
- 45:44jogged for 11 1/2 lap. No, the 5K isn't it.
- 45:48How many laps? Around 3000 meters.
- 45:50Yeah, 7 1/2 laps. So they've literally jogged for
- 45:546 1/2 laps and then they kick down the last lap.
- 45:58So you're not actually missing out on too much essentially with
- 46:01the 1500 meters there. That's the one where you're not
- 46:04going to see some of the earlier moves going on.
- 46:06But again, the times that they're running, they're not
- 46:08like 320 nines or anything. They're like 330 fours for the
- 46:12men. So most of the the action and
- 46:15the moves are being made in that last lap anyway.
- 46:17And then they cut to an interview with the the person
- 46:21who won and then they show the race standings for that race.
- 46:24You see the 128 or that, and then what that means for the
- 46:27overall standings for the full events with the split, if you
- 46:31like. So it's really good summary.
- 46:33And as hard as it is to consume what goes on here because
- 46:36there's just so much that is probably the best way to do so.
- 46:40Well, how I found anyway, I quite enjoyed going through it.
- 46:43So I'm going to try and talk through the results.
- 46:45Now we're going to look at the 815, 100 split, which is the
- 46:50short distance event. So first up for that in the men,
- 46:54the 800 meter race was on the first day.
- 46:56So Marco, a rock there, who is the 800 meter specialist, he
- 47:01just cut himself loose from the pack and started driving from a
- 47:06decent while out and no one was able to go with him and it was
- 47:09an easy win for him. So he's ran 143.38 to get the
- 47:14win there. Then in second there was Josh
- 47:17Howie, the American guy who I think we spoke about him a few
- 47:20weeks back. I think he was just ran the
- 47:22American record for the 800 meters out of nowhere or ran a
- 47:26ridiculously fast time. Anyway, he was in second.
- 47:29In third was yard and a goose. So kind of like the best of the
- 47:32rest of the 1500 meters guys. He was 145.36 so and shows how
- 47:38how dragged out the field was from what a rock done to it.
- 47:42Then we had Hobbs Kessler 4th, Josh Kerr 5th, Cole Hawker
- 47:46sixth, Samuel Chapel of the Netherlands in 7th and Elliott
- 47:50Giles who was our YouTube Diaries feature in 8th.
- 47:55And it will actually be cool to see if we can link this together
- 47:59to see if Ellie Giles does a YouTube video on this meet,
- 48:03which I imagine he will. So watch this space for that one
- 48:06because it might tie it all together nicely.
- 48:08And just to link back to the racer and the challenger element
- 48:11there. So obviously the way these
- 48:13fields are put together, they have and a half of them are
- 48:16races who are guys contracted for the whole series and and
- 48:21then half of them are challenges.
- 48:22So this is like people who are in form or just whoever the meat
- 48:26can contact the kind of come and throw the cat amongst the
- 48:29pigeons if you like for one off events.
- 48:32So the fair Marco a wrap who was first was racer, Josh Howie, who
- 48:38was second was a challenger and you had no goose and 3rd is also
- 48:42a racer. So it's always just interesting
- 48:44to look at that dynamic. There are the guys who are here
- 48:47all year able to hold the form and justify the contract if you
- 48:51like, because you expect the challenges to come in and be at
- 48:55the top of the game essentially. That's why they've been brought
- 48:57in. And then in the 1500m race on
- 49:00the second day, Josh Kerr managed to just dip this one in
- 49:04334.44, head of Cole Hawker in 334.51.
- 49:10So it was literally whoever could dip the best on the line
- 49:15there. And again, as they're kind of
- 49:17coming round between 3 and 200 to go maybe around 2:50, a ROP
- 49:23obviously knows he's won the event the day before and he
- 49:25knows he needs to kind of make himself competitive because he
- 49:28got a chance of walking away with 100 grand and he hits the
- 49:32front and just starts driving and driving.
- 49:35And then you see the strength of those 1500 meter guys because
- 49:39although they can't match a wraps top speed and he manages
- 49:42to gap them a little bit initially, he just can't keep
- 49:46that up for 250 meters at the back end of a 1500m race there.
- 49:50So then coming off the last bend and Josh care and call Hawker
- 49:55kinda RIP away and they're driving towards the line.
- 49:58They completely gap a rock and yet Care just out dips Hawker.
- 50:02So then in 3rd was Hobbs Kessler.
- 50:05He managed to come away with them as well.
- 50:08Michael a rock managed to hang on for 4th, which meant that he
- 50:11won overall. And then that meant that in
- 50:14second overall, Josh Kerr got himself up there and it was
- 50:19close. So they end up K Rob had 17
- 50:22points overall, Kerr had 16 points overall.
- 50:25Josh Howie, the American athlete was in 3rd overall with 12
- 50:28points and Cole Hocker down in fourth overall with 11 points.
- 50:32So it's it's interesting really, because Hocker being the Olympic
- 50:36champ, he hasn't actually managed to do anything special
- 50:39in any of these so far, but he is kind of continually making
- 50:42small steps forward. And obviously, Cliche, we always
- 50:45go to it's a long season. So we'll, we'll judge him at the
- 50:48end of the season essentially. And just going back to the
- 50:52British guy there, Elliott Giles, he was, he was last
- 50:54overall so wasn't a good event for him.
- 50:57The things they raced the 1500 meters first on the Saturday.
- 51:02So what LG was first there in a 358.04, Jess Hall was second in
- 51:09a 358.36 and Nikki Hilts of America was third in a 4 minutes
- 51:16flat .54. And we had Georgia Hunter Bell
- 51:19of Britain in 4th 400.85 and Abby Caldwell of Australia in
- 51:25fifth on her debut in a 401.54. So Jess was really in command of
- 51:32this race and she was kind of off the front pushing the pace
- 51:36and without she went with her and you could see it was out.
- 51:38It was going to be out of those two from like 3200 to go.
- 51:42They were just they weren't trading blow for blow.
- 51:45But without she was just following every move that Jess
- 51:47was making and Jess was making it really fast.
- 51:51So she managed to break the field minus without G.
- 51:54And then as they round off the 100 meters to go, you can see
- 51:57that Jess is she's still moving forwards and she's still like
- 52:02accelerating, but without she's just absolutely in cruise
- 52:05control and just kind of steps out half a yard and then change
- 52:09his gear and that was that. But yeah, really strong room for
- 52:12just that in 2nd. And it was interesting to see
- 52:15that Nikki Holtz was back in 3rd because she's kind of been a
- 52:20really strong performer in this discipline all year.
- 52:22So I mean, you can't stay at the peak of your fitness all the
- 52:25time. And if you end up finishing
- 52:27third because of that, then that's not a bad result at the
- 52:30end of the day, is it? And then yet Abbey Caldwell had
- 52:32a good run on her debut as a challenger in fifth.
- 52:35Then in 6th was Anderson Wiley of the US 7th, Mary Maura, who's
- 52:40kind of like the 800 meter specialist.
- 52:41So no surprise that she didn't manage to run a great race here.
- 52:46And then on the second day in the 800, again without, she won
- 52:49this in 158.9 for Georgia. Hunter Bell of Britain was
- 52:53second in a 158.99, so incredibly close there and Jess
- 52:58Hall was there in a 159.63. Abby Caldwell was also fourth in
- 53:03two flat .57. So then I if that's surprising,
- 53:07but in 800 you would expect potentially that's more of Abby
- 53:11speciality. So I guess it shows what a great
- 53:15run Jess has had there to run sub two minutes as well and what
- 53:18this done for the overall standings.
- 53:20Was it meant without she? Obviously she won both races.
- 53:23She's first overall. He's won by a mile in terms of
- 53:26the overall points tally. So she had 24 points because of
- 53:29her two wins. She gets 12 points per win.
- 53:32And second and third, it was really close.
- 53:35So Jess Hull as managers, second overall with 14 points.
- 53:39Georgia Bell was third overall with 13 points and Abby Caldwell
- 53:43was 4th overall with 9 points. So think that prize money goes
- 53:47100K50K35K25K potentially in U.S. dollars as well.
- 53:54So I'm just thinking about Abby Caldwell there.
- 53:56What a lovely payday that's been for her.
- 53:59And potentially, I don't know how far in advance they're
- 54:01getting the call up or they're arranging these things, but I
- 54:04can't imagine it's more than a month or so out.
- 54:06So if you say this time last month, Abby, you're going to
- 54:10earn what's 25 US like maybe 35 Aussie, then I'm sure she'd be
- 54:15incredibly happy with that. Finally, onto the distance
- 54:18event, which as I mentioned earlier was the five 5000 meters
- 54:22have dropped. So it was only the 3000 meters
- 54:24here. So in the women's, Agnes
- 54:26Negatich of Kenya won in 843.61, followed by tie 8 of Ethiopia in
- 54:34second in 843.7 and a third was just at Andrews of the US in
- 54:39844.7. So again, those times just show
- 54:43how much of A jog it is for a majority of these races because
- 54:46these girls are clearly capable of running a lot faster than
- 54:49that. But the race comes down to who
- 54:51can finish the quickest. And on the men's side, the
- 54:53things was won by the American former collegiate Nico Young in
- 54:58801.03. In second was Sam Gilman of the
- 55:02US in 801.7, third Kai Robinson of Australia in 801.92, fourth
- 55:08Andrew Koskaran of Ireland in 802.17.
- 55:12So this race was really interesting because Kai Robinson
- 55:15was in control for pretty much the entire entirety of the last
- 55:20lap from what I saw. He's on the front and they're
- 55:23all kind of trying to get past them, but he's he's pushing so
- 55:26hard that it's hard for people to make a move.
- 55:29Costume was there on his shoulder for a large majority of
- 55:32it. And you're thinking back to the
- 55:33previous meet where costume had like those ridiculous kick
- 55:37finishes and you're thinking, oh, if he's still there, he's
- 55:41going to be able to run him down.
- 55:42And then all of a sudden, as they pull off the final 100m
- 55:46corner, Nico Young just absolutely mashes the hammer
- 55:50down and just pulls away from them.
- 55:53So it was incredibly impressive. And what's of note here is the
- 55:57first six athletes in this race are all challenges.
- 56:01And yeah, Grant Fisher, there was a DNS so he's allowed Nico
- 56:05Young to come through and pick up some cash there.
- 56:08And not a bad payday for Kai Robinson back and 3rd either.
- 56:11So I'm sure those boys will be appreciative that Grant decided
- 56:14not to toe the start line on this instance.
- 56:17And that is a wrap for the Grand Slam track Philadelphia.
- 56:20And I think it. Also concludes the running news
- 56:22segments. All right, Dean, thanks for
- 56:25taking charge of the running news this week.
- 56:27Seen as I've been a little bit disengaged, I'm preoccupied, so
- 56:32we'll move on to our training weeks anyway, and I'll try not
- 56:35to waste too much time talking about masses that aren't
- 56:38training weeks, but here we go. So Monday I was obviously back
- 56:44in the UK, back at home now. And on Sunday I mentioned that I
- 56:48was going to watch Liverpool, which I unsuccessfully went to
- 56:52watch Liverpool, went over ticket, didn't work, didn't get
- 56:55in, got my money back thankfully.
- 56:57But then ended up just watching it in the pub with my uncle and
- 57:01drank way too many beers, but managed to still have a really
- 57:04good time celebrating. And like the whole city was just
- 57:07absolutely chaotic and bouncing. So it was, it was a really good
- 57:12special occasion. I guess everyone was like,
- 57:14you've just not you've never seen enough like felt anything
- 57:16like it because everyone's just like genuinely so incredibly
- 57:20happy. It's like utterly bizarre, which
- 57:23is quite ironic because then the next day, I don't know if this
- 57:26would have made the news as far as use when they've done the the
- 57:29trophy parade. Like the Liverpool team got on a
- 57:33bus and drove through the city and the streets were like
- 57:35absolutely packed again. I think they think around one
- 57:39and a half million people lined the streets and they had Calvin
- 57:42Harris on the bus DJ and so just looked absolutely humble.
- 57:47Maniac has got in his car and drove through a crowds of
- 57:52people. The stories a little bit blurred
- 57:56as to like why or the actual facts.
- 57:58But with social media, there's like plenty of footage of like
- 58:02kind of before and the actual moment it happens as well.
- 58:08So yeah, thankfully there's there was no fatalities, but
- 58:12very shit and into it all because he's literally came
- 58:15through it. I think like 27 people were
- 58:17injured. So it was, yeah, it was quite
- 58:20bizarre way to end like a very happy weekend for the whole
- 58:24city. What I did, actually, I seen
- 58:27Calvin Harris outside the stadium as well.
- 58:29I didn't message him, but when we were sitting there, we were
- 58:34sitting there trying to get in because we tried the ticket.
- 58:36It didn't work. And then the game had kicked off
- 58:39and we sat there on the wall because the guy was like
- 58:41supposedly sending more tickets through.
- 58:44So as with any sporting events, as soon as like, it starts
- 58:48outside of the stadium is just derelict, isn't it?
- 58:50Like there's no one around, everyone's inside.
- 58:52And then this guy walks past and I was looking at him and
- 58:55thought, that looks like Calvin Harris.
- 58:57And I shrugged it off and was like, Nah, he looks a bit too
- 59:00like, shabby, like needed to shave and looked a bit scruffy.
- 59:04And then the next day I see my mate who was in there has got
- 59:08this selfie with Calvin and Harris and the fellas wearing
- 59:10the exact same outfit. And I was like, Oh my God, could
- 59:13have just walked up to him like it was only me and him there.
- 59:16But that was funny. And then Tuesday I done a 90
- 59:23minute cycle, which is literally the only exercise I've done all
- 59:26week because Tuesday night I flew to Majorca for one of my
- 59:30friend's weddings. And then as you can imagine,
- 59:34there's just been way too much alcohol involved.
- 59:36So glad to take myself away from this.
- 59:39I mean, it was unbelievable weekend, holiday with like some
- 59:42of my closest friends. And that's why it just gets
- 59:45carried away. And the fact that I'm injured
- 59:47probably doesn't help because I'm, I'm probably thinking I
- 59:50will fuck it. Like, I've got no reason to be
- 59:52responsible right now. But yeah, got that one out my
- 59:55system, I guess. So there's literally nothing
- 59:58else to report. I've barely gone for a walk.
- 1:00:02I've done a few swims in the ocean.
- 1:00:04And I tried to do a set, I'd done a session on the bike the
- 1:00:07first day that I landed there because I was fresh.
- 1:00:10But then for context, after that goes down to the beach and like
- 1:00:15a few of the lads and their misses have started like
- 1:00:18arriving as well. So we're all there on the beach
- 1:00:22and they've gone the shop and got a load of tins and I'm like,
- 1:00:24all right, let me just go for like 1/2 an hour swim now just
- 1:00:28to top up my cycle session and at least start this holiday with
- 1:00:32something meaningful. And they genuinely wouldn't let
- 1:00:35me get in the ocean until I've had a beer first.
- 1:00:38So that's kind of how that went. The hail.
- 1:00:42It actually doesn't feel any different.
- 1:00:44Annoyingly, like it doesn't feel much better.
- 1:00:47And I'm really done any rehab. So I'm thinking I need to
- 1:00:51actually do my exercises this week and see where it leaves me
- 1:00:54next week. But that's it's three weeks of
- 1:00:56no running, like an no load on it now.
- 1:00:59So I'm kind of a bit pissed off. It doesn't feel any better.
- 1:01:02And I'm starting to think like, oh, well, given how I feel now
- 1:01:06after all the alcohol and all the food, what I'd love to do is
- 1:01:09just go outside and go for a run just to feel better.
- 1:01:13But I'm like, it's probably not wise because I need to just do
- 1:01:17the rehab and then see if it responds.
- 1:01:19So yeah, let's not waste any more time on my chaos.
- 1:01:23If we can you Sue can tell me about some of the training news
- 1:01:27have done. Just just a question, is there
- 1:01:30rehab exercises, are they meant to like like I know say if it's
- 1:01:36like your Achilles, some load through it is sometimes a
- 1:01:39helpful thing. Is it a bit similar for the
- 1:01:42plantar fascia? Is that is it a bit like you
- 1:01:44load it up a little bit? That might try and that might
- 1:01:48reduce your pain? So essentially it's a
- 1:01:50combination of a shit ton of calf strengthening and it
- 1:01:54sounds, sounds bizarre, but it's called toe yoga.
- 1:01:57So it's a lot of isolated toe movements.
- 1:02:01So like moving your big toe on its own and moving the rest of
- 1:02:04your foot on its own and clenching your toes and
- 1:02:07releasing your toes just to kind of get that pull through the the
- 1:02:11bottom of your foot essentially. And like tug on your planter
- 1:02:14without loading it. Like with the force going down
- 1:02:18through it, you pull the force laterally through it.
- 1:02:22So yeah, as you can imagine, whilst I'm sat there like 3 days
- 1:02:26into a bloody Bender, I'm not thinking about doing toy yoga.
- 1:02:29Yeah. So the goal for this week is to
- 1:02:33have some responsibility. You should definitely have
- 1:02:37rocked up to the beach when everyone's getting stuck in and
- 1:02:40started to do your exercise, rolled out your towel and
- 1:02:42started to do your exercises. That would have gone down very
- 1:02:45well. You know the I was wearing a
- 1:02:48pair of my Gouda sunglasses and they weren't received too well
- 1:02:53from a non running friends. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:57And do you think that like the shoes today, the way they're all
- 1:03:02like super soft and that has affected like the muscles in
- 1:03:08your feet that they're not getting worked as much as they
- 1:03:11would if you were wearing a more like solid shoe?
- 1:03:14Perhaps, yeah, perhaps you just become too soft to it all.
- 1:03:19And I know saying walking around barefoot, it sounds a little bit
- 1:03:23stupid, but that definitely impacts it massively.
- 1:03:27So like when I'm at home, I'll have a pair of indoor sliders
- 1:03:30and a pair of outdoor sliders. So when I'm in the house, I'm
- 1:03:33always wearing the thick stacked hocker slides.
- 1:03:36Whereas like when I've just been away there, that last week I was
- 1:03:39walking around the hotel barefoot and and noticed it
- 1:03:44getting more angry just off walking around barefoot, which
- 1:03:47is just bizarre. It shouldn't be so, so fragile
- 1:03:50to it, but it is. And then what didn't help is the
- 1:03:54past two days my ankles have like blown up massively.
- 1:03:58I think it's just my body telling me, like, what on earth
- 1:04:01are you doing? Like this is this is torture.
- 1:04:03Please stop there. Could there could be gout?
- 1:04:07So. It's a crystallization of urea.
- 1:04:18It's like a rich man's disease when you drink too much piss or
- 1:04:22you eat too much seafood. You can, you can suffer from it.
- 1:04:26I mean, it's normally shouldn't be affecting you, but I have
- 1:04:30heard of mates that have had big benders suffer from it.
- 1:04:32So, but you'd know, you'd, you, you would know if you jumped
- 1:04:36onto your toe joint and it was, it was gout.
- 1:04:39It's not that I'm just taking, taking the meat.
- 1:04:42Well, I mean, they've come down and actually, no, I can show you
- 1:04:44because it's still massive relatively to what it normally
- 1:04:48would be. They should be behind a paywall
- 1:04:50that's come. Down quite a lot at.
- 1:04:55Least people can't see this. They have.
- 1:04:57It's Fallen Jay. Wiz, what are you doing over
- 1:04:59there? Guys, one SEC it's raining
- 1:05:02outside in the Washington. OK, I said before that I didn't
- 1:05:08get here till late last night and that was because so we we
- 1:05:12left Majorca yesterday morning, flew at 745, landed in Barcelona
- 1:05:18half eight in the morning, picked up a car from the car
- 1:05:21hire place and driven at what is on paper a four and a half hour
- 1:05:27drive to Marseille. And it took 12 hours to get here
- 1:05:31because I couldn't physically drive because I was so tired.
- 1:05:34I could do half an hour and then I would start to fall asleep
- 1:05:38behind the wheel. So we stopped five times and I
- 1:05:41had to keep nap and do like half an hour or an hour and then fall
- 1:05:45asleep again. You couldn't just eat your way
- 1:05:47there. You didn't just get a heap of
- 1:05:49snacks and. I can't eat anymore, I'm going
- 1:05:53on a week long fast. I'm surprised you didn't just
- 1:05:56get an Uber, hey. Do they drive on the other side
- 1:05:59of the road? Yeah, correct.
- 1:06:01Oh man. Fair play.
- 1:06:03Which when you when you're so tired it's, it's hard to
- 1:06:08remember that, which makes it even more dangerous.
- 1:06:11I feel like when you're turning left, it's a real issue because
- 1:06:15you normally go to the first line, whereas you have to go
- 1:06:17like the second. Yeah, it's just really, really
- 1:06:19confusing. Yeah, once you're actually on
- 1:06:22the road, like driving straight or following the road or
- 1:06:24whatever, it's fine because you're just following the line
- 1:06:26of traffic and you're not really thinking, oh, I'm on the right
- 1:06:29hand side of the road, You're just in the flow.
- 1:06:32It's when you come out of a junction or something and your
- 1:06:34natural instinct is to just go to the left hand side of the
- 1:06:38road and then you see the car come and see after.
- 1:06:42They kind of snap the steering wheel pretty fast.
- 1:06:46All right, I'll tell. Tell us about your week.
- 1:06:49So Monday, unsurprisingly, just two jogs in and out of the
- 1:06:55office, so just the usual 40 minute commutes and then Tuesday
- 1:07:02run into the office, run to the track and we had broken miles.
- 1:07:08SO1K it was meant to be like just quicker than threshold, 400
- 1:07:13meters, VO two 200 meters stronger again, sort of cutting
- 1:07:16down to seconds per lap for each effort.
- 1:07:20But this is the last time. So Tom, the two Toms, Tom
- 1:07:23Moorecroft, Tom Cross and I think Kieran, they were all
- 1:07:26they're all gearing up to head over to Europe.
- 1:07:28This is their last Tuesday session.
- 1:07:30They fly I think today. And so they were and had Leonora
- 1:07:33this weekend. So they were looking at doing it
- 1:07:36quicker than what we normally do.
- 1:07:37I think when we do the K reps, we normally do them around 2:53
- 1:07:40to 2:55, but they want us to do them in 250.
- 1:07:44So I thought, oh, let's just hold on and see how we go.
- 1:07:49And so yeah, we did 4 by AK, averaging around 2:50 for the K,
- 1:07:5364 seconds for the 400, and then for the two hundreds, I just
- 1:07:57kept them at 32 seconds or maybe 31 seconds.
- 1:07:59I didn't really go too much quicker and yeah, it felt, look,
- 1:08:03I feel like I'm getting fitter again, which is nice.
- 1:08:05This was like my best Tuesday workout in a little while, which
- 1:08:08was good. It was really like hard like I
- 1:08:10find this is always the last thing to sort of come back where
- 1:08:14where I get, you know, where I feel fit again.
- 1:08:16But that's the quickest I've done those K reps in any any
- 1:08:20way, which was a good sign. And I didn't take a turn.
- 1:08:24I just sat in and held on and got it done, which was good.
- 1:08:27That's a solid session. Like you aren't moving there.
- 1:08:30Yeah, and, and like Tom Moorcroft in particular looked
- 1:08:34really comfortable. Like he was he, he literally
- 1:08:38took just about every Rep. I mean, Kieran chopped in for a
- 1:08:40bit. And Tom dropped in for a little
- 1:08:42bit, but yeah, Moorcroft was able to just sit and just turn
- 1:08:46all those out. And he was looking, he's looking
- 1:08:48really good. So he, I think they're heading,
- 1:08:50they may see you guys soon, right?
- 1:08:51They'll be over in, in the UK in a yeah in a couple of days and
- 1:08:55have a few races lined up. And I think he might run pretty
- 1:08:58well, hopefully. Is anyone asking you you're
- 1:09:02going to be taking the turn on the front or anything or they
- 1:09:05they none the wiser that you're not doing your fair share?
- 1:09:07Granny's pretty good. Granny sort of knows where I'm
- 1:09:10at, so he's like just sitting. Dino doesn't have to do
- 1:09:12anything. He's and to be fair, those guys
- 1:09:14are like, you've done enough of those reps for us.
- 1:09:17So it's they, they didn't mind, which is really nice.
- 1:09:19So yeah, that was pretty hard. And so, yeah, Max and I
- 1:09:22literally are just sitting in there getting towed along.
- 1:09:25But if it's a Thursday or Saturday session, we'll sort of
- 1:09:28do our bit. But yeah, that was all I had.
- 1:09:31It was probably a bit harder than what I would have liked to
- 1:09:33to have been because I still wasn't 100% well.
- 1:09:37So I felt pretty rough Wednesday and it was a pretty messy day,
- 1:09:41just quite busy with work and I was working from home looking
- 1:09:44after the kids, so I really didn't run much at all.
- 1:09:46I ran just under half an hour and that was it.
- 1:09:50But then Thursday, back on the double threshold, I was feeling
- 1:09:55it pretty rough. I think just from being a bit
- 1:09:58unwell and then pushing pretty hard on Tuesday.
- 1:10:01My heart rate, everything felt a bit rubbish and so I was a
- 1:10:04little bit slower on the Thursday morning for was it 3 by
- 1:10:098 minutes. My heart rate was a bit higher
- 1:10:11than what it was last time and my pace was a bit slower.
- 1:10:13So I was wasn't enjoying it quite as much, but got it done.
- 1:10:18So yeah, it was about 7 1/2 KS in just over 3 1/2 minute K
- 1:10:21pace. So yeah, just this 3 by 8
- 1:10:24minutes with a one minute float just around like Munga.
- 1:10:27So jogged into, jogged to Munga, did this work out, jogged into
- 1:10:31the office and then jogged back there in the afternoon.
- 1:10:35And in the afternoon it was absolutely like pissing wet.
- 1:10:38It was pretty, pretty horrible weather wise, but there was a
- 1:10:41nice group of guys that were there which was good and we had
- 1:10:45the 1500 meter reps which you might have remembered we had
- 1:10:49done them. You know when you loop around
- 1:10:50the bowls club and then you jump back to the start finish line
- 1:10:54just because it's so dark now. We just did them around the the
- 1:10:58lake which was which was good. I think we averaged maybe like 3
- 1:11:03or 7 something like that for the, so it's 5 by 1500 meters
- 1:11:09with a 92nd slow jog recovery. And yeah, big group again, which
- 1:11:15was nice. So I didn't really see the front
- 1:11:18too much. I sort of just said stayed in
- 1:11:20and ticked it off. And this was my third sort of
- 1:11:22double threshold night and it, my legs actually felt better
- 1:11:26than what they had previous. So I feel like I'm sort of
- 1:11:28getting used to it now, which is good.
- 1:11:30And it's been fun. I'm enjoying doing like it's a
- 1:11:32big day. Like, by the time I ran home
- 1:11:33from the second threshold, I think it's like 35 to 4, like a
- 1:11:38pretty big day for me. So certainly pretty wrecked by
- 1:11:42the time I got home. And then Friday, just my usual,
- 1:11:45you know, commutes to and from the office.
- 1:11:47Sorry. Yeah.
- 1:11:48I was going to ask also, it's interesting that you noticed
- 1:11:51with your, your heart rate and your pace on the Thursday
- 1:11:55morning session, you'll probably start to pick up on these
- 1:11:59variabilities, won't you? And it'll be like a a midweek
- 1:12:03fatigue check almost because you can't you can't hide from it
- 1:12:07essentially because it is that double threshold you have to
- 1:12:10just a bad buyer and it'll come out how it comes out.
- 1:12:14But it'll tell you like kind of way from the last week of gas
- 1:12:18Vernon, you cumulative load. Yeah, sort of, yeah.
- 1:12:21At the minute I'm just trying to get all my workouts done and
- 1:12:24then if I can do a decent long run and then whatever I can do
- 1:12:28around that I can do. But yeah, it's always tricky.
- 1:12:32Like we're sort of going into winter, you can get a bit crook
- 1:12:34and all this sort of stuff. So you sort of want to do
- 1:12:37everything. Like I want to push my easy runs
- 1:12:39out and make sure I'm doing all my strides in gym and sauna.
- 1:12:43But you can't do everything, can you?
- 1:12:44So yeah, I'm still just trying to feel everything out before I
- 1:12:48sort of and work out my best routine, but I haven't quite got
- 1:12:52there just yet. And like you say, your heart
- 1:12:53rate's a bit of a giveaway if you're too tired.
- 1:12:57And then Friday we just had our hilly tempo.
- 1:13:00So yeah, 4K warm up. And then Max was there, so so he
- 1:13:06was sort of pushing the pace. And Luke Bates was running with
- 1:13:09us for the first half, so we just had two by 19 minutes hilly
- 1:13:13tempo with a 2 minute jog in between.
- 1:13:16And so you sort of do the 1st 19 minutes one way with the group
- 1:13:19jog, one, one minute one way and then turn around.
- 1:13:22And the idea is that you try and get back to where you started,
- 1:13:25which is always fun doing a group session that way because
- 1:13:27in the last five minutes you sort of everyone starts coming
- 1:13:30back together. And if you've judged your effort
- 1:13:32right, everyone should be finishing around the same spot.
- 1:13:35And so it just sort of makes it engaging because everyone's
- 1:13:37trying to, you know, keep in front of whoever's catching them
- 1:13:40or catch up to the person just in front of them, which was,
- 1:13:42which was, and I think Max, this might have been the first time
- 1:13:46Max and I had a Saturday morning together.
- 1:13:48And so he was, he was a bit up and about, which was good.
- 1:13:51So I basically just sat behind him for 40 minutes.
- 1:13:55It just wasn't the same, was it? It just wasn't the same as.
- 1:13:58What A has been. Yeah, he was he was pretty.
- 1:14:04He was pretty up and about. He's like, I love this stuff.
- 1:14:07I could do it for an hour and I was like, oh God, here we go.
- 1:14:11So I was just glad I survived. But yeah, it's it's always
- 1:14:16appreciated particularly. I hate those hilly tempos.
- 1:14:19So if ever there's someone that's prepared to sort of, you
- 1:14:22know, chop in for a bit, I really appreciate it.
- 1:14:25And that was Max. So good to tick off.
- 1:14:29When when you when you say you sat behind him for 40 minutes,
- 1:14:33was it actually 40 minutes or was it like 39?
- 1:14:36No, it's like 90. Envisaging you kicking him,
- 1:14:39kicking him away in the last minute.
- 1:14:44No, no, no, I was pretty. I was pretty well behaved, like
- 1:14:49is downhill on grass. I hate the grass too.
- 1:14:52So now if it was a like a Thursday workout maybe.
- 1:14:56But the tempo tempo is pretty good.
- 1:15:00There's that that way of doing it, like it is tough once you
- 1:15:03turn around and you might think maybe that 1st 19 was a little
- 1:15:08bit too much or if you turn into the hill straight away then
- 1:15:12obviously it's pretty tough. And you know, when I was doing
- 1:15:15it that there was always usually Owen on yourself behind me.
- 1:15:20And I'm just like, Oh no, I need to at least hold yous off for
- 1:15:24like a good 10 or 15 minutes just to like keep some respect.
- 1:15:30And you can just feel it coming. And that's when it's like tempo
- 1:15:33turns the threshold pretty. Quickly.
- 1:15:36I used to always push them too hard because I like I end up
- 1:15:40someone and just like reeling them in.
- 1:15:42So I'd always be like redlining the whole time and then.
- 1:15:47So, so it's fine. So we were, yeah, we were about
- 1:15:517 or 8 seconds. Admittedly, the profile, we ran
- 1:15:54more downhill the second-half, but we were a lot quicker on
- 1:15:57this on the way back. And I think I explained to Max
- 1:16:00how it would go. But once he's, I think started
- 1:16:02to see all these people, he just, we were just just churning
- 1:16:06through them. And the first person we caught,
- 1:16:08you know, when you do like an introduction and you're like,
- 1:16:11there was the first new person down for their first session.
- 1:16:14And sure enough, about 8 minutes on the way back, like it's 40
- 1:16:17minutes of running. And then in about 28 minutes in,
- 1:16:19this is first person to be caught.
- 1:16:21And I don't think I don't know if he was having such a good
- 1:16:23time of it like his because he would have gone out all excited
- 1:16:26first session, make a make a name for himself and he just
- 1:16:29completely blown, blown to pieces in the in the hills.
- 1:16:32So I think he was suffering. And then, yeah, Max was just on
- 1:16:36one. We'd caught everyone.
- 1:16:38No, there was one person left to catch.
- 1:16:40And I think it had even turned 40 minutes, had ticked over and
- 1:16:43he's still basically trying to hunt him down like it's done.
- 1:16:47So what were your splits like on average?
- 1:16:50I think it was 3/21 for the 1st 19 minutes and then 313 for the
- 1:16:552nd 19 minutes. That is.
- 1:16:58That is shifting in Kings Park, isn't it?
- 1:17:01It's getting up to old sort of levels, no?
- 1:17:05He's got a record though. We were maybe a bit quicker that
- 1:17:08day when you hurt your leg, wasn't it?
- 1:17:10We? Yeah, yeah, No.
- 1:17:12When you were trying to drop us up and down the hills.
- 1:17:16Look at. Me now.
- 1:17:20But yeah, but the same old, same old.
- 1:17:22So we we got it done, which was good.
- 1:17:26And yeah. And then this morning I met up
- 1:17:28with Joshie and we did two hours just looping around herdsmen.
- 1:17:33So he's been a bit under the weather, so he wasn't sure how
- 1:17:36far we'd go. So we just looping laps of of
- 1:17:39herdsmen And yeah, the time went pretty quick and I jogged home
- 1:17:43and that's my week. How many kilometers?
- 1:17:46What does that? What does that leave you with?
- 1:17:48148. Not bad.
- 1:17:51Very good. I'll quit.
- 1:17:55How many weeks out from Sydney are we?
- 1:17:57Or is it still up in the air? Yeah, I'm a little bit, I'm not
- 1:18:00sure on, on, on Sydney. My only thoughts are do I do 2
- 1:18:04marathon blocks to Valencia and does that?
- 1:18:08I don't know how all that sort of sits together because it's
- 1:18:11not that much time and I'm just going to push out for one block.
- 1:18:14I don't know. So I'm not sure.
- 1:18:16There is that 50K next weekend, so maybe the I'll do that and
- 1:18:20see how I go. There's a few people doing that
- 1:18:21which should be fun. Vlad, Vlad message me saying he
- 1:18:26might be keen to run together. And then I think Sota is is
- 1:18:31doing it and I've heard and, and, and I think he might be
- 1:18:38getting a bit of pace assistance I think as well.
- 1:18:42So so yeah, bit of a watch this watch, watch this space this
- 1:18:46good. So that that's next Saturday
- 1:18:48morning. I think I'm Carlos Michael
- 1:18:50pacing him. Just talk in and watch the party
- 1:18:53unfold. Yeah, hopefully.
- 1:18:55But yeah, good and back. I'll quickly like through my
- 1:18:59week. So I sort of have a plan in
- 1:19:02place. I've got six weeks of what I
- 1:19:04call fat camp. So I'm basically, yeah, just a
- 1:19:08six week block to try and like get back into some reasonable
- 1:19:12shape. So my Monday started off with a
- 1:19:1540 minute jog and then a few strides.
- 1:19:19So I've done 8 strides and then in the evening, I'm not doubling
- 1:19:23any of these days, just easing back into it, no.
- 1:19:27Easy double S. No easy double S Yeah, maybe,
- 1:19:30maybe next week. Tuesday I did my first bit of a
- 1:19:36session and I'd say 12 weeks. So it was actually pretty
- 1:19:39similar to you, Dean. It was 3 by 8 minutes, but I had
- 1:19:43like a 4 minute flow in between and I what were you doing your 8
- 1:19:48minutes and 3:30 did you say? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:52Just under, yeah. So my first one was like my
- 1:19:55first eight minute block, the average like 337.
- 1:19:58So like immediately for a lad who hasn't run much in 12 weeks,
- 1:20:02I was like, I'm not that fit. And then my floats were still.
- 1:20:07I was trying to float at like 4 at like 4 minute pace.
- 1:20:13Yep. What?
- 1:20:14What were you running this to? Were you doing this to heart
- 1:20:17rate or feel or what? What?
- 1:20:18How did you know what to? So I just had like a vague, like
- 1:20:23a vague #2 hit like to see what I'm at because I did take a
- 1:20:27lactate as well. So again, heart rate, yeah,
- 1:20:30heart rate. I wouldn't, didn't want to go
- 1:20:32above 170. OK, so after the first one, I'd
- 1:20:36done a lactate test and it was like 2.5 or something.
- 1:20:40So well, it's a bit high for the first one.
- 1:20:44That's. That's yeah, OK, Yeah, a little
- 1:20:47bit high, but not, not too bad. You'll see later on.
- 1:20:49And then the third one grand and the fourth one, then the lactate
- 1:20:54was 4.5 S Yeah, a bit high. And your heart rate at that
- 1:20:59fourth rate? I, I can't remember the heart
- 1:21:02rate, but I'd say I was creeping up mid one 70s.
- 1:21:05So it was just, it was over threshold anyway.
- 1:21:08Yeah. But like I didn't feel too bad.
- 1:21:12Like for my first session in 12 weeks, I was just surprised at
- 1:21:16how good it felt. Cool.
- 1:21:18So yeah, then I don't just within that, I don't like a 15
- 1:21:22minute. To the paces.
- 1:21:25On you, on your reps as you went 234 and got up to 4.5.
- 1:21:29The first one I averaged around 3:35 a kilometer, the second one
- 1:21:35I averaged around 4:45 a kilometer, and the third one was
- 1:21:39around 44345 a kilometer again. So yeah, not great, but I was
- 1:21:44just happy to actually run under a 4 minute kilometre again.
- 1:21:48It felt nice to be going somewhat fast then Wednesday.
- 1:21:53Isn't it that we even sorry as you, your first one was 337 but
- 1:21:59your lactate was good And then even as you've backed off the
- 1:22:02pace as the sessions gone on, your lactate has continued to
- 1:22:05build, hasn't it? Yeah, yeah, I think the floats
- 1:22:09are a bit hot as well, so I wasn't clearing it.
- 1:22:13So in future, like, maybe I'd like just like, do what you
- 1:22:16don't like the one minute flow of this, like basically just
- 1:22:19shuffling, yeah, just to let your body recover and all.
- 1:22:23But yeah, it wasn't the worst and it's not the best.
- 1:22:27The fact that you felt nice is a is a really good sign.
- 1:22:30And then it's just your Physiology just needs to evolve,
- 1:22:33right? Basically.
- 1:22:34Basically. Wednesday I just done a 50
- 1:22:38minute bike. I didn't run at all, I just let
- 1:22:40my legs recover. Thursday I done 50 minutes easy
- 1:22:45in the morning and then 88 seconds strides up a hill.
- 1:22:49Total that's like 11.9 kilometers And then in the
- 1:22:52evening I got a massage. So for the first couple of weeks
- 1:22:56I'm just going to get massages like every like week to second
- 1:22:58week week or second week just cause like it's a lot more load
- 1:23:03on the body and I just don't want to take any chance.
- 1:23:06Friday I took a total rest day. Saturday it was meant to be a
- 1:23:10double day but I had a concert in the evening so and I probably
- 1:23:13worked out better. Like I'm in no rush really to
- 1:23:17get fit so I may as well enjoy life while I'm not in serious
- 1:23:21training. But so Saturday's session was 6
- 1:23:25by it was The Lumineers. Indie band.
- 1:23:29Yeah, yeah, yeah, they're actually good.
- 1:23:31And actually his brother, his younger brother died on like
- 1:23:35Wednesday and he's still like, done the concerts, which was,
- 1:23:39yeah, crazy, but no really good. Maybe we'll when we do the show
- 1:23:43post we'll have Lumineers as the as the tune.
- 1:23:48Yeah, I do, I do, I do. Yeah, they've actually loads of
- 1:23:50good bangers. So Saturday this session was 6
- 1:23:55by 4 minutes with one minute flow.
- 1:23:59So 20 minute warm up, 20 minute cool down.
- 1:24:01And this one was a lot better. So the after the second Rep, my
- 1:24:08like my heart rate was bouncing around like 160 to 165.
- 1:24:13And after the second Rep I'd done the lactate test and it was
- 1:24:172 millimol and then on the 6th Rep my lactate was 1.4 millimol.
- 1:24:23So that's a lot like the Rep was shorter, but so ideally you'd
- 1:24:29like to be running them a bit faster.
- 1:24:31But again, second session back it was a lot more positive than
- 1:24:36the than the Tuesday. After you've.
- 1:24:39Gone. Just after you've done a few of
- 1:24:41these lactate tests, it'd be good to talk about the lactate
- 1:24:44monitor. I don't know we can do it
- 1:24:45another night, but it'd be cool to get your get your thoughts
- 1:24:48and insights on it. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:24:50My fingers are a bit sore from pricking them, but I won't be
- 1:24:53doing it every week to tell you that much.
- 1:24:56And then Sunday, this morning, I just done a 60 minute easy jog
- 1:25:01around where I'm from. It's a lot of greenfields.
- 1:25:03So there's this like sacred site.
- 1:25:06It's like years and years ago there was castles on it and
- 1:25:09whatever, but now it's just like a big open hilly grass area.
- 1:25:14It's called Hillatara if you ever want to look it up.
- 1:25:16But yeah, so I just jogged around that 12.5 kilometers,
- 1:25:20just literally cruising. So that's my week.
- 1:25:23Total mileage 66 kilometers. 66 kilometers.
- 1:25:27Sorry. So yeah, I'm slowly getting up
- 1:25:30there. Week 1 of fat camp done.
- 1:25:33So hopefully I'll be getting fitter from here on out.
- 1:25:37Love it, That's good. Can you include?
- 1:25:38Me in the program for fat camp. As I'm sure you can see on the
- 1:25:49on the stream, it's not just my ankles that are swollen.
- 1:25:57No, Yeah, good week. It's good to see you putting
- 1:26:01some weeks back together now. So that's two weeks of running
- 1:26:04in a row, isn't it? And you you're clearly feeling a
- 1:26:06lot better about it. Yeah, like sleeping better, like
- 1:26:09everything is just, I don't know, just feel better when
- 1:26:13you're moving more and. Did you did you get any needles
- 1:26:18or anything this week into your calf or are you doing anything
- 1:26:20more with that or you feel like it's OK?
- 1:26:23I'll consistently get them because it just will tighten up.
- 1:26:26So I'll leave next week and then the following week will get
- 1:26:29needle. So every second week I'll either
- 1:26:31get needles or a massage. So that is probably the plan
- 1:26:33going forward just on top of it. Well, I think we covered off
- 1:26:38YouTube Diaries earlier on, didn't we?
- 1:26:40Saw Elliott Giles takes the slot for that this week.
- 1:26:44I don't know if anyone has gone. Ivy YouTube.
- 1:26:49I actually do have a quick one. Jacob being a Britain, have we
- 1:26:53talked about him before his YouTube?
- 1:26:55Not properly, no. I think Dean, we, we have, we
- 1:26:57have mentioned it, but not. Like we didn't do YouTube.
- 1:27:01Guys, his most recent 1 is so, so good.
- 1:27:04So he's injured, so he's just cross training and the chap it's
- 1:27:08crazy. He so because he cross trains,
- 1:27:11he doesn't do anything easy. Everything is just like Max
- 1:27:14effort. So he does beyond elliptical and
- 1:27:16it's just like going so fast and he's the room set to a certain
- 1:27:20temperature and he wears a load of clothes.
- 1:27:23So he's literally just dripping in sweat.
- 1:27:26After half an hour, he gets off the elliptical, change his
- 1:27:28clothes, get back on, gets back on for as long as he can for
- 1:27:32let's say another 20 minutes, half an hour.
- 1:27:35And then he'll literally jump straight into his pool and do
- 1:27:38elliptical for like 1/2 an hour. And then he'll go and get
- 1:27:41treatment. And then that evening he'll do
- 1:27:44the same thing again, elliptical, Aqua jog.
- 1:27:46But he's he's just so, so funny. He's like, just give it a watch.
- 1:27:52It's crazy. It's give me a total different
- 1:27:54outlook on cross training, like what you can do because there is
- 1:27:57no impact. Like you can just go help for
- 1:27:58ladder. So now he's worried that he's
- 1:28:00going to be so, so like fit, but his legs will just have to like
- 1:28:04catch up. He's so funny, he's so good.
- 1:28:08He's, yeah, he's got quite a, he's got a bit of a like, dark
- 1:28:13sense of humor, doesn't he? So he's sort of like forever
- 1:28:16taking the piss sort of thing, but he's actually crazy.
- 1:28:19Yeah, yeah. He's so like, before this, I
- 1:28:22never would have thought he'd be the type of person he actually
- 1:28:25is. Like I tell he'd be so serious
- 1:28:27now, but he's he's just so funny, so good.
- 1:28:30Good, good shadow do. You think that the whole court
- 1:28:35case that happened with his dad and stuff has almost been like a
- 1:28:38weight lifted off his shoulders and now like, it's kind of out
- 1:28:42there. Everyone knows what's happened
- 1:28:43and stuff. He's just, he feels a bit more
- 1:28:46himself and he's able to like express himself.
- 1:28:49Or do you think he's he's always being this way, but now we're
- 1:28:52only just starting to see it through YouTube?
- 1:28:54I'd say like he has always been this way, but now that like he
- 1:28:58doesn't have his father like controlling him and like pulling
- 1:29:01the strings, like he's actually able to express himself more and
- 1:29:04like put like what he actually really is like, which is I think
- 1:29:08it's just way, way better. Like before, before like go on
- 1:29:14before like you would have like it was so you didn't know what
- 1:29:18was happening. Basically it was everything was
- 1:29:20behind a curtain and like you would have presumed like there
- 1:29:23would be like drugs involved or whatever.
- 1:29:26But now he's so open about his training and all, like you fully
- 1:29:28believe he's totally clean and he's just so transparent.
- 1:29:32That's my point. That's my like viewpoint anyway.
- 1:29:35Yeah, I got the sense that, I mean, I've always quite liked
- 1:29:39them. I don't really know why, because
- 1:29:41you didn't really know him formally, but I guess.
- 1:29:44I just was. Inspired by him probably, but
- 1:29:49from that I got the sense that a lot of people didn't like him in
- 1:29:52the same way, so I don't really know why why you wouldn't like
- 1:29:56him basically. I don't know.
- 1:29:58I think like at the start he would have came across as a bit
- 1:30:00arrogant and I don't know, like I think now he's just a normal
- 1:30:07guy. I don't know, it's weird.
- 1:30:09It's a relatable I guess, isn't it?
- 1:30:11Yeah, exactly. Before we finished, we did have
- 1:30:15a gaffe to correct from last week.
- 1:30:18So it seems like when we've read the results out from HBF, they
- 1:30:24weren't quite collaborated in the right order.
- 1:30:26I think maybe there's a couple of different waves and someone's
- 1:30:29got mixed into the wrong wave. So in the women's race, the
- 1:30:34winner was actually Lauren Ramsdon.
- 1:30:37So the Ramsdens, Lauren and Matt Ramsdon did get to do the double
- 1:30:41there, which I said that they didn't.
- 1:30:43So she's won in 4312. And also Matt Ramsdon broke his
- 1:30:48own course record there on that day as well.
- 1:30:51So thanks to Vicky from HBF for messaging in and letting us know
- 1:30:56about that when she wants to correct that.
- 1:30:59If you've ever any insurance enquiries just go to HBF.
- 1:31:05And we did get a suggestion from Susie McMahon on the back of
- 1:31:09last week's episode that Ryan Greenwood, Friends of the Stars
- 1:31:13could be a new segments. I mean, I'm not quite sure that
- 1:31:16news would allow allow it to be printed so favourably.
- 1:31:21To me it'd be more. Ryan.
- 1:31:24Greenwood the biggest pain in the arse.
- 1:31:29Friends of the Stars sits sits well with me.
- 1:31:31You own. Yeah, no, that's good.
- 1:31:33Or even Star of the Stars. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:31:37Tell us about your latest Ryan. Well, we've done it as Calvin
- 1:31:43Harris, wasn't it, I thought. I bet.
- 1:31:46Didn't Susie send you a send you a message?
- 1:31:49Oh, yeah. Then then she's been to the the
- 1:31:53FTK live show at Launceston this weekend, and she sent through a
- 1:31:57photo of herself with Brett and Joel.
- 1:31:59And she says Brett remembers you guys from Maragami.
- 1:32:03Now, what's interesting about that is remembers is very open.
- 1:32:07So I wonder what he remembers and what his actual opinion is.
- 1:32:12Probably remembers all that was astronomy chat telling us about
- 1:32:17the stars and the fact that they're due a tsunami or
- 1:32:20something like that. Cameras up, yeah.
- 1:32:24Japanese earthquakes, yeah, Yeah, but that's good.
- 1:32:29We'll take it, we'll take it, we'll just take it as book for
- 1:32:32what it is. That's all we can do.
- 1:32:35So, well, I mean, we've, we've said the the word FTK about five
- 1:32:39times this show. So if he if he remembers us and
- 1:32:42and he's interested that much and maybe listens to easy
- 1:32:45double, he might be kind enough to say the word easy double on
- 1:32:48FTK one week right then out double double trouble.
- 1:32:53Owen, did you have one or not? It's not really a double
- 1:32:56trouble, it's just something I stumbled across.
- 1:32:58So I'm sure a lot of people know about High Rocks.
- 1:33:03It's sort of taking over the world at the moment, but I'm not
- 1:33:08sure many people know High Rocks actually stands for or like what
- 1:33:12it's short for. And apparently it's short for
- 1:33:17hybrid rock star, which is I wasn't expecting that one.
- 1:33:23So to all you hybrid rock stars out there, Bond rocking.
- 1:33:30That's it. Well, there's a few professional
- 1:33:33hybrid rock stars as well, aren't they?
- 1:33:35Like. I just can't take it seriously.
- 1:33:37But now that we actually know what's hybrid rock star?
- 1:33:40We've we've already I think at some point offended hybrid rock
- 1:33:44stars in our short series of 15 episodes.
- 1:33:48So we'll just leave it at that, that that's their that's their
- 1:33:51official title for now and leave them be doing their 8 by 8K in
- 1:33:57their race. Yeah.
- 1:33:58Rock on. Which people rude it might be
- 1:34:01because I'm trying to drive on the left hand side of their
- 1:34:04right hand sided roads, but they're just not.
- 1:34:07They're not very accommodating or welcoming even in the street
- 1:34:10and stuff. They just maybe they they see me
- 1:34:12being English from so far away, I don't know.
- 1:34:15But not not like the beautiful Perth people have welcomed me
- 1:34:19with open arms. You don't look English with your
- 1:34:21nice tan so and you've sound French.
- 1:34:24Your French accent is like impeccable.
- 1:34:26So missing people. You must be running the
- 1:34:29Liverpool years or something like that all.
- 1:34:30Right then I reckon that's a wrap.
- 1:34:32We'll we'll go and catch lap 30 of the F1, although I think
- 1:34:36Owen's been watching it since Brundle's grid ball.
- 1:34:38It is actually lap 38 all. Right then.
- 1:34:44Cheers guys all. Right.
- 1:34:46See you mate, see you later.
