- 0:00Our bodies are infinitely capable of healing. They're perfectly created and they are always on our side.
- 0:04Your body is never attacking you. Your body is always working in your best interest.
- 0:08And so if you're getting something that's a symptom or something that's not what you want,
- 0:12that's a message and your body is clearly telling you either I need something I don't have
- 0:16or I'm getting something I don't need. Many moms know more about nutrition, raising children,
- 0:21how to raise children than any medical doctor, any professional. So moms, you are brilliant and
- 0:28you don't need a medical degree to be brilliant. What is one of your favorite things to share with
- 0:33people when they're trying to live a more non-toxic lifestyle? Anything we can do in our home to mimic
- 0:38the natural environment of the outdoors is super high ROI. So obviously get morning sunlight outside.
- 0:43That's amazing. But a simple tip is...
- 0:49Katie, well I'm the show and as I was saying just a second ago it was hearts like yours
- 0:54that inspired me to do what I'm doing. So you're one of my inspirations.
- 0:58You're one of the individuals that I feel that brought true change to the world. You've always served
- 1:04everyone, not just the elite that can afford to live a non-toxic lifestyle but you've
- 1:09provided solutions for years with your valedictorian level brain which is true. Katie's a genius and
- 1:16she serves and she lives the life as best she can. You're a mom of six children. If anyone knows
- 1:22non-toxic living and the non-toxic lifestyle out of all my friends it's you and applying it. So
- 1:29it's with great honor. I get to interview you today and we made it happen and I just want you
- 1:38to share your story and then let's just mean you talk as friends. Amazing. Well thank you for
- 1:43having me and you are an absolute inspiration and I love that you are speaking to the dads too
- 1:48because I have long spoken to the moms and I know moms are an absolute force of nature
- 1:52and have so much power to impart change but I think when we get the dads on board as well
- 1:57and there's alignment and complementarity there I think that's where we're going to actually see
- 2:00the big shift start happening. So it's an absolute honor to be here Warren. Yeah I mean that is
- 2:04kind of neat like I didn't think about it. You're a wellness mom. Then I'm a non-toxic dad like
- 2:09I didn't think about the king and the yang of relationship and a lot of moms use me as a tool
- 2:14toward their husbands and then they say ah he's you know whatever and I mean I get you know he
- 2:19doesn't have enough muscle mass to tell me what to do. It's interesting but you know we're just
- 2:26both for good friends and we have our journeys. What led you to creating wellness mom? Like you
- 2:33were already blogging it wasn't you were just doing it out of the during the blog era like you
- 2:38were like one of the OGs helping people. So what made you start blogging? It's wild to think it's
- 2:44almost 18 years ago now because my oldest is now an adult which is still mind-boggling but it was
- 2:49perfect. I never thought I would end up in this world. It wasn't part of my plan and thankfully
- 2:53God has better plans but two things happen simultaneously that led to what's now on this mama.
- 2:58One is that after my first pregnancy I started having weird health symptoms that eventually led
- 3:03on a long journey to find answers and then to find healing and at the same time I read I'm sure you've
- 3:08read this as well this article. It was in Time magazine and it was talking about a study that for the
- 3:13first time in two centuries the current generation of American children will have a shorter life
- 3:18expectancy than their parents and that hit me so hard. I was holding this perfect tiny newborn
- 3:24and I was reading these staggering statistics about how their generation was going to face
- 3:28rapid rising rates of heart disease and cancer and autoimmunity and diabetes and of course we're
- 3:33seeing that play out along with mental health issues on the rise and just across the board.
- 3:38Kids having chronic conditions that were once only for the elderly like we're seeing that play out
- 3:43and in that moment I resolved I wanted to somehow be part of the change of reversing that
- 3:47and I had no idea how but that's when it became my mission and I'm so thankful it lined up with
- 3:53my own health struggles because that led me into deep research when I couldn't find answers
- 3:57in the medical world and it led me to the understanding that we're each our own primary health
- 4:02care provider and while we can work with amazing doctors and that's great to do we're the ones in
- 4:06the driver's seat and more the ones with the responsibility and as parents that's true for us with
- 4:11our kids also and so it's been a long and beautiful journey I now no longer have Hashimoto's
- 4:16I've fully recovered from all those things but the community that's developed that's what gives
- 4:21me so much hope is the amazing moms and parents that are on this mission and the next generation
- 4:27like these kids that are growing up right now are absolutely incredible and they give me so much hope
- 4:31that we're going to actually see change here yeah I mean one of the things that I see and I'm
- 4:36going to mention about your blog and you know how precious that is I'll say that first is what I
- 4:42love about your blog is you actually do read the research you've written most of the articles by
- 4:48hand this aren't AI generated like what's happening today and you put heart and soul and back
- 4:55that everything you said you've had a lot of this stuff now medically reviewed for accuracy
- 5:00like it's a really great resource which is beautiful you know so you you started this journey you
- 5:05you've created this blog you created a really big impact doctor Google decided to destroy your
- 5:12rankings at one point because this information became disinformation so we got censored with
- 5:20research grade information and so now you have to buy your weight at the top if you want the top
- 5:25so you need to be well-funded right who is the most well-funded and marketed markets best or
- 5:30lies best according to who lies best wins unfortunately and that needs to change and so it has to
- 5:37change has to happen with individuals so I'm just I'm blessed that we can continue to get this
- 5:42this message out there and empower moms and now dads with this non toxic lifestyle non toxic
- 5:49advantage a big part of what you do absolutely and you're right the online world has changed with
- 5:55what our search results are but I also think it's still in beautiful ways still we're able to
- 6:00reach moms and it actually is really pushing at us toward even more focus on community which I
- 6:05think is a really beautiful thing because moms are still interested in these topics and the running
- 6:10joke I think is actually true that a concerned mom will do better research than the FBI and I see
- 6:15these women who for the sake of their children truly are like essentially getting an honorary medical
- 6:20degree they are delving into the research and like I think despite the struggles from Google we're
- 6:25still always we're wired to connect we're wired to learn and I think with moms driving that charge
- 6:29we're still going to find the information we're still going to make the changes we just come on
- 6:33yeah yeah so moms you are brilliant and you don't need a medical degree to be brilliant and
- 6:41many moms know more about nutrition raising children how to raise children than any medical doctor
- 6:49any professional so once again it's the powers in your hands learn from your great great grandmother
- 6:54style of child rearing like we've lost all these all this ancient wisdom and I mean I don't
- 6:59want to point a finger but a lot of the books that were written weren't written by moms they weren't
- 7:03written by individuals over thousands of years learning how to create community and family we've
- 7:10really hurt society some of the the movies that we watch like the Truman show or we can go down
- 7:16the list and we're heading towards divergent you know or we're heading towards some of the horror
- 7:22movies which always is scary I don't want to get conspiracy but it seems like a lot of the things
- 7:26that happen the movies and this much be bright people that are connected that know what what could
- 7:30happen but it's it's scary we're moving in a in a quickly into a direction if we don't do
- 7:36something and people are standing up and I can get really fired up about it and so can you so
- 7:42that being said you know what what what can moms do to break that statistic that horrible statistic
- 7:50that our children with all the with all the diets with all the things that we now have all the
- 7:56medicine all the all the brilliance technology they're not going to live as long as us and it's
- 8:02getting worse and worse and the writing is on the wall what what can moms do to you know one to
- 8:08protect their families and two to join you know the mission well I think if anything the internet
- 8:14has proven that it was not lack of information that was the problem because now we have the
- 8:18entirety of human knowledge literally in our fingertips and that hasn't shifted it but I think
- 8:23it gives us the foundation to create that shift I think there's incredible power and a mother's
- 8:27intuition which can't be quantified or scientifically studied or certainly sold by a pharmaceutical
- 8:33company but I see so many women who are getting more in touch with that deep wisdom of motherhood
- 8:38and like you talked about some of these traditional things that grandmothers have always known
- 8:42we're seeing a return to those things but it's happening on the grassroots level like Google's
- 8:47not going to lead us to that charge and I see kind of a divide happening I see the scientific
- 8:52community discounts anything that's not double blind placebo controlled and you hear almost in
- 8:57a satirical way about anecdotal data or anecdata or n of one studies and I like to turn that on
- 9:03its head because having seen it in my own life the most valuable study you will ever do in your life
- 9:08is the study of yourself that n of one study is the only one that's actually relevant to you scientific
- 9:14data could say all the things and if you're the percentage of people that's an outlier that data
- 9:18is irrelevant and so I think if each of us can step into the driver's seat of our own health and
- 9:23accept both the responsibility and the incredible power that come with that for ourselves and while
- 9:28they're young for our children and be willing to take the ownership of being the driver and being
- 9:33our own primary health care provider because at the end of the day I firmly believe very few things
- 9:38do I firmly believe and I will hang my hat this is a hill I will die on that our bodies are
- 9:44infinitely capable appealing they're perfectly created and they are always on our side and I had
- 9:49to learn this the hard way because I was given one of those words that comes with the term auto
- 9:52immune disease and I was told your body is attacking itself you will always have this condition
- 9:57all that language your body is never attacking you your body is always working in your best interest
- 10:03and so if you're getting something that's a symptom or something that's not what you want
- 10:07that's a message and your body is clearly telling you either I need something I don't have or I'm
- 10:11getting something I don't need it's speaking to you so if we learn to speak that language for
- 10:16ourselves for our children the body is infinitely capable of healing it is always on our side
- 10:21and it's designed to do that so I think it's really just about learning to speak that language
- 10:26getting out of our own way stepping back from the fear and being able to just do that study of
- 10:31oneself that lets you find your variables because another thing I talk about a lot being in this
- 10:36world for so long we all we see all these amazing voices and experts and they what the pattern
- 10:42seems to be is and it happened to me too you figure out what works for you you feel better you
- 10:47want to tell everyone because you want everyone to be able to feel better too yes the problem is you
- 10:51figured out what works for you and the wisdom in it is for someone else to learn how to figure out
- 10:56what works for them but we want to be able to just apply the blueprint give me the checklist give
- 11:00me the spreadsheet tell me exactly what to take and it doesn't work like that it's not apples to
- 11:05for us and someone else but the wisdom is in learning that framework learning how to do the study
- 11:10of the variables and of course there's generalities and commonalities come into all humans like things we
- 11:15can universally avoid and things that are universally beneficial but the beauty in the nuance is
- 11:20beyond that and I think that's where we're seeing women sort of step into their intuition into
- 11:25their power into their willingness to take responsibility and experiment and I think that's where
- 11:29we're going to see change wow you nailed that that's a beautiful thank you that was a dissertation
- 11:36on really summarizing and beautiful words vocabulary of almost like a poem of of healing
- 11:46for women and for families and obviously after doing this for 18 years you really come to
- 11:54the answer in my opinion intuition knowing don't listen to the lie it's not a triple blind study
- 12:02listen to your hearts know that your body can heal that you're brilliant your powerful your healthy
- 12:06your whole the mindset surrounding it getting excited and hopeful that when you're when you're
- 12:13getting a symptom it's just you know it's something's working against you and you need to figure it
- 12:18out like it is these variables this equation of healing you summed it up beautifully and if
- 12:24there's some variables like we talked about there's things that are universally good and there's
- 12:28some things that are universally bad I love talking about I'm heavy on the universally bad but I
- 12:34you know I do the universally good it as well and after all the years 18 years you've been at
- 12:39this the same amounts as me I started in late 2005 early 2006 right so there's very few people
- 12:46at this conference that have been around that long some of the some of the OGs I've met some of
- 12:50the doctors starting like 1995 and you know just beautiful souls but after all those years what are some
- 12:57of the the variable bads the nasties that we should all avoid and what are some of the variable goods
- 13:03we should all integrate such a good question and I've seen the trends I'm sure you have to and as
- 13:08we've gotten more access to technology and research there's all the especially in the biohacking
- 13:12world trends of all this fancy equipment and all these nuanced supplements and I think there's
- 13:16a time and a place for all those things but if anything what these last 18 years have taught me
- 13:21is a return to those kind of core universal basics like you talked about and the great part is
- 13:26they're actually pretty simple I think we like got we over complicated it with the access to so
- 13:31much information and we kind of got the idea that we had to be doing 10,000 things all the time
- 13:36to be healthy and have I know I did I had a spreadsheet of supplements I was taking every day I was
- 13:40doing all the things and what I've realized is we're humans meant to live in alignment with nature
- 13:45and with each other and so all of the the categories of good and bad center on that core principle
- 13:51like we are meant to exist in alignment with nature and with other people humans are nutrients
- 13:55nature is nutrients and we lost that part we're living entirely indoors we're separated from
- 14:00the rhythms of the light and being outside we're separated from proximal community with people
- 14:05we're more technologically connected than we've ever been and more physically disconnected than we've
- 14:10ever been and I think that's impacting our kids the most so yes we can talk about like the core
- 14:15thing you would want to avoid in your diet and I think that's easily summed up in just anything that
- 14:19leads to inflammation is better to avoid anything that nourishes the body is better to include
- 14:25and then there's nuance within it for each person but for years I've said you know processed foods
- 14:30in general just things like refined sugar vegetable oils food dyes etc and now those are all being
- 14:34talked about so much which is great but I also have shifted the mindset around that because I
- 14:40used to write blog posts literally titled how grains are killing you slowly and what I've learned
- 14:45I think is that yes processed grains not ideal for the human body and having fear around that living
- 14:51in the like it's killing me slowly mindset makes it worse for you just like as I was for a lot of
- 14:56years I was doing on paper quote unquote all the perfect things and they didn't work until I shifted
- 15:01my mindset because the body does it it needs to be in the right nervous system state to heal and
- 15:05that was the part I missed for a long time so on the positive side I think the great news is
- 15:10and especially relevant to moms is all of the universally beneficial things are either extremely
- 15:16inexpensive or entirely free because it goes back to that being in the community with nature and with
- 15:20people so I think if you dial in your light your sleep and then the foundational basics of just
- 15:27nourishing your body that gets you 90% of the way there and what I love is when you know people
- 15:32when the blue zone studies came out all the scientists were so excited and they were analyzing in
- 15:36great detail what were they eating is it because they had a glass of wine every night is it because
- 15:40they were vegetarian hint they weren't that was not the most common data or the like strongest
- 15:45connection in those studies in those studies what they really highlighted was those people did
- 15:50all those things in community yes they ate dinner slowly with people they loved yes they walked
- 15:55every day with people they loved they ate with intention they were present I think so much of our
- 16:01problems of modern existence could be mitigated a lot by simply learning to be present to be in
- 16:07the moment that we are in with intention with love with connection with other people with rhythms
- 16:12of the natural environment that'll get us 90% of the way there and then when we add on the more
- 16:17fancy things and the new on supplements they're going to work better yeah I mean damn we are on
- 16:22the same page and I and how you say it I mean it's it's beautiful again you just so beautiful like
- 16:28you should be on every top podcast in the world screaming that message I mean and you've landed
- 16:33on exactly where I've landed after all these years we've landed in the same place the further you
- 16:38get away from nature that's it you know if you're going towards nature you're going to get healthy
- 16:43if you're going away from nature you're going to get sick right process foods away from nature
- 16:47seed oils away from nature right pressing an olive oil naturally that's that's nature right there's
- 16:54ancient cultures and civilizations with all the marketing like that's been away from nature right
- 16:59phones away from nature away from community and man it's it's where I've landed and even like on
- 17:07this like we're doing this podcast before like with you and I'm like I'm getting energized because I
- 17:11get I just we're connecting with hearts and it's not it's not laborious and I've done a lot of
- 17:17podcasts on that this this weekend and I thought I will know it and there's like how do you do it
- 17:22and I'm like well I'm I'm connecting heart energy with people that are amazing that have a message
- 17:29to share and you know and giants you know like yourself that that have that have opened their
- 17:35hearts up to the world and have seen that helium you've come to a really solid place with a message
- 17:43and mission that is it is pure and right and necessary to pull humanity back out of the insanity
- 17:49and back into the beauty of nature connection with God the divine you know each other like this is
- 17:55it's not the sexy stuff it's not the three three toxic seed oils you can avoid and why and you know
- 18:00I mean I do that stuff right right but it's not a product we can buy on Amazon or $197
- 18:05thing that's going to solve your life it's the return to what we've always known as humans and
- 18:10have forgotten that's beautifully said so surrounding this idea of non toxic living what is one of
- 18:14your like favorite things to share with people when they're trying to live a more non toxic lifestyle
- 18:20oh there's so many directions it could go I feel like you have done an amazing job of covering
- 18:24so many practical tips like I watch your videos and get key takeaways I'm still learning from you
- 18:29I would say really hone in on first if you want the highest ROI things
- 18:33beware of the principle that yes we create our environment in our homes but our environment also
- 18:38creates us so there's a direct feedback loop there so to the degree that you can modify the
- 18:43environment in your home to be more in alignment with nature like we talked about yeah it's a
- 18:48kind of very easy low effort way to start getting the benefits of that so this could be things like
- 18:53my house is weird if you ever visit me we don't have a coffee table we have a mini trampoline
- 18:57in the living room we have a climbing hang board in the kitchen the kids have gymnastics rings in
- 19:01their room we put movement in our way every day so we are naturally doing it we do it too that's
- 19:06I love that same thing with like we talked about light and how important that is yeah anything we
- 19:10can do in our home to mimic the natural environment of the outdoors is super high ROI so obviously get
- 19:16morning sunlight outside that's amazing but a simple tip is have the overhead lighting in your
- 19:21home to be like daylight spectrum natural light bulbs that's bright that's going to be overhead
- 19:26those kind of light cues are always meant to come from over our head and that signals sort of
- 19:30the collect correct rhythms with light but that same principle means that after the sun goes down
- 19:35we want to be only viewing amber and red light spectrums from eye level or below because that
- 19:40mimics the sunset that mimics a campfire and that gives all the rights or Katie and cues to our
- 19:44body to prepare for good sleep sleep of course is when we actually rest digest and heal so anything
- 19:49we can do to support that so in my house that looks like right overhead lights and then lamps with
- 19:53red bulbs to go on at sunset and I have very few absolute firm rules with my kids but we don't
- 19:58do screens after sunset because I actually think that's one of the highest ROI things you can do
- 20:03to improve your sleep and when you improve your sleep you improve everything that's amazing
- 20:07like I just learned a ton there we have a trampoline too we have like all the things so funny
- 20:11like I love that yeah we've integrated those are the high ROI things you know the lighting and
- 20:15we do all overhead natural I have like 400 bulbs because they outlawed yeah let me do the LEDs so
- 20:24if there's your like the greatest concern you have in the world today and if you could
- 20:29have the ability to remove that concern emotional spiritual physical that's affecting this world
- 20:36that deeply bothers you what would that be I would say so many people being in a state of fear
- 20:42because I think when we're existing in a state of fear we've given up our power to make change
- 20:46and also that is a stressful state for the body so it's not a state where we're optimally going to
- 20:51heal it's not a state where we're optimally going to be able to think through positive change
- 20:55it isn't a place of empowerment and I see that so much and it's obviously the the stance of
- 21:00the media I went to journalism school I understand that you know what bleeds leads and all that
- 21:05but I think we have the ability to shift that internally and that when we shift the internal we shift
- 21:10the external reality of our world also so whether that's avoiding the mainstream news to avoid
- 21:15that fear input whether that's approaching things with an empowerment based ability to create change
- 21:21being in the driver seat versus if this is happening to me but this is happening for me even if
- 21:25it for my case if it was Hashimoto's it was happening for me I learned amazing lessons from that
- 21:30and I think all of us can look back in life and see perhaps hard times that we went through that
- 21:35led to the most beautiful things in our life and we can in hindsight find gratitude for that I think
- 21:40one of the most powerful hacks is to learn to shorten that curve until we can find gratitude in
- 21:44the thing while we still think it's hard and I think that's where we actually can create the
- 21:48most change is when we make that inner shift yeah I mean again like get this woman on every
- 21:55podcast get her in front of the state senate I mean the the federal you know let's get you into
- 22:02politics I mean but you're getting your beautiful your beautiful soul you're a warrior for moms and
- 22:09dads around the world and I'm so honored to be able to share your message and mission today on
- 22:15our podcast and now the important question people want to learn more if they don't if you don't
- 22:20know about wellness mama how can they find you easiest place is just wellness mama calm the
- 22:25podcast lives there links to all the articles are there all the 800 plus podcast episodes are
- 22:30everything's there and it's all really focused on moms and families and and taking the science
- 22:35and distilling it because I'm a nerd that loves to spend time reading PubMed but I realize most moms
- 22:40either don't have time or are not interested in that so I always try to approach it if how can I
- 22:44take this information and make it actionable and digestible and easy for moms because our
- 22:49limited resources are time but we can give that power to moms that's when the world changes
- 22:54that's beautiful thank you so much Katie I encourage everyone to go to to your website to learn
- 22:59more from you you're one of the greats thanks again thank you
- 23:14you
