- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud your
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 4: Millennials who want financial freedom. Welcome back to another shop
- 1:04Speaker 4: back Money Diary Monday, where we get to chat to
- 1:07Speaker 4: one of our community members to learn about their money
- 1:09Speaker 4: story and their finances and all of the other fun
- 1:12Speaker 4: bits and pieces. And of course I've got Victoria. Hello,
- 1:16Speaker 4: how are you going.
- 1:18Speaker 5: I'm very excited for this money Diary because you said
- 1:20Speaker 5: it was a good one earlier and now I want
- 1:22Speaker 5: to know.
- 1:23Speaker 4: I feel like money Diarist. We know you really well
- 1:25Speaker 4: because we got to meet you at one of our
- 1:27Speaker 4: events this year, so that's really fun for us, not
- 1:30Speaker 4: that anybody else knows anything about.
- 1:32Speaker 5: They don't know which person that was, which state that
- 1:35Speaker 5: was in, or even which event it was, so ha
- 1:37Speaker 5: good work working that one out.
- 1:38Speaker 4: No, but exciting for us. But let me tell you
- 1:40Speaker 4: all about our gorgeous diarists, she said, from being raised
- 1:43Speaker 4: by my gorgeous single mum, to having a spinal fusion
- 1:46Speaker 4: surgery at thirteen, to running away with the circus, studying
- 1:49Speaker 4: in Montreal, nannyingham Paris, bartending in London, performing in the
- 1:53Speaker 4: South of Italy. Then, as we all know, spicy cough hit,
- 1:56Speaker 4: I had to move back home at the end of
- 1:58Speaker 4: twenty twenty. I'm now twenty two years under, thriving. I've
- 2:01Speaker 4: bought two properties, married the love of my life, started
- 2:04Speaker 4: renovating our home but good investing, and most recently quit
- 2:07Speaker 4: my job to go back to my passion for circus
- 2:09Speaker 4: and travel.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Is that not very fun?
- 2:11Speaker 5: And you're only twenty two years old? Money dos? Welcome
- 2:14Speaker 5: to the show. How many lives have you actually lived?
- 2:19Speaker 6: Feels like one hundred at this point. It's been a
- 2:21Speaker 6: long twenty two years, well, actually twenty three now I
- 2:24Speaker 6: just had my birth Happy birthday, thank you.
- 2:28Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, how fun. I cannot wait to get
- 2:30Speaker 5: into this. This feels like it's going to be.
- 2:32Speaker 2: A wild one.
- 2:33Speaker 5: So let's start off the way we always do. Can
- 2:36Speaker 5: you tell us a little bit about your money story.
- 2:38Speaker 6: Yes, So, as I said in my money diary, I
- 2:41Speaker 6: grew up being raised by a single mum who is
- 2:44Speaker 6: like a wonder woman. She left home at sixteen and
- 2:49Speaker 6: has been just doing her own thing ever since. Then.
- 2:52Speaker 6: She worked full time, studied full time, and raised me,
- 2:55Speaker 6: putting me through private school and traveling overseas and whatnot
- 3:00Speaker 6: on her single parent income. So I learned a lot
- 3:02Speaker 6: from her. She was accountant, so she knows a little
- 3:06Speaker 6: bit about.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Money around and.
- 3:09Speaker 6: Basically taught me that you can have everything, you just
- 3:13Speaker 6: can't have everything at once. So I lived and I
- 3:17Speaker 6: still live very much by that, making sacrifices in different
- 3:20Speaker 6: areas of my life continuously so that I can achieve
- 3:24Speaker 6: the things I want now and I can also achieve
- 3:26Speaker 6: the things I want in the future.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, I feel like I get along really
- 3:30Speaker 5: well with your mum, So ten out of ten for her.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I want to know. Now, what do you do for work,
- 3:35Speaker 2: how much money do you earn?
- 3:36Speaker 6: So for work at the moment, it looks a little
- 3:39Speaker 6: bit different. I recently quit my full time job that
- 3:42Speaker 6: I have been doing for the last year, so I
- 3:44Speaker 6: could take a step back and focus on training to
- 3:48Speaker 6: get back into circuits. But obviously I had bills to pay,
- 3:52Speaker 6: two mortgages and whatnot. So I basically worked out our
- 3:56Speaker 6: budgets and what we needed between me and my partner
- 3:59Speaker 6: to pay each week. So it comes about thirteen hundred
- 4:02Speaker 6: to cover all bills including tax between the two of us.
- 4:05Speaker 6: We split that evenly, and we're both required each week
- 4:08Speaker 6: to make six hundred and fifty dollars. So I do
- 4:12Speaker 6: that at the moment through working in hospitality, so I
- 4:15Speaker 6: work as a catering chef or as a catering waitress
- 4:19Speaker 6: at different events. I also work at a fast food franchise,
- 4:22Speaker 6: and I also do uber each driving, so each week
- 4:25Speaker 6: looks a little bit different. But as long as I'm
- 4:27Speaker 6: making that money, we pay our bills.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, I love that you're so specific about that,
- 4:31Speaker 5: but you're also so flexible in it. You just know
- 4:34Speaker 5: how much you need to earn and you do it
- 4:36Speaker 5: in whatever way works that week.
- 4:37Speaker 2: That's actually so cool.
- 4:39Speaker 6: Thank you. Yeah, it's really nice having lots of flexibility
- 4:42Speaker 6: with that, so I can focus on training or some weeks,
- 4:46Speaker 6: you know, we might have extra bills or things we
- 4:49Speaker 6: want to buy in particular, and then we work a
- 4:51Speaker 6: little bit harder to make those goals happen.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Yeah, of course, all right, Next question, what is your
- 4:56Speaker 5: big money goal? What are you working towards?
- 4:58Speaker 6: So at the moment, our overall big money goal is
- 5:03Speaker 6: financial freedom. I feel like most people would love that,
- 5:06Speaker 6: And that's just kind of at the moment, little steps
- 5:10Speaker 6: because we have some other bigger, sooner goals that are happening,
- 5:14Speaker 6: but working in the background on investment properties and investing
- 5:19Speaker 6: in the share market that's still new. The other big
- 5:22Speaker 6: money goal is we want to go traveling and potentially
- 5:26Speaker 6: move overseas next year. So hopefully by June next year
- 5:31Speaker 6: we will be off traveling, and then how long we
- 5:34Speaker 6: go traveling for and whether we move depends on what
- 5:38Speaker 6: income we can save or what income we can produce
- 5:41Speaker 6: what we're overseas.
- 5:42Speaker 5: Love Lura, talk to me. Do you have any investments,
- 5:45Speaker 5: If so, what are they?
- 5:47Speaker 6: Yes, So I have one investment property, which the rental
- 5:52Speaker 6: income on that covers the mortgage as well as the
- 5:57Speaker 6: property management fees and rates, so basically water and body
- 6:01Speaker 6: corp poratepies aren't covered, but majority if it is. However,
- 6:04Speaker 6: we pay the mortgage ourselves through our own budget on
- 6:08Speaker 6: that property, so that the money can just go into
- 6:11Speaker 6: the property to pay all the other bills and just
- 6:12Speaker 6: sit there in case something comes up. We also have
- 6:15Speaker 6: our home that we live in, but from next year
- 6:19Speaker 6: onward it would be an investment property, and the rental
- 6:22Speaker 6: on that one, looking at the moment should cover everything surplus,
- 6:28Speaker 6: so we'll cover all bills and mortgage on top of that.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Then we have about one thousand dollars in chasas that's
- 6:34Speaker 6: still new. We've put about one hundred dollars a week
- 6:36Speaker 6: into our Chezea's account just to kind of play with
- 6:39Speaker 6: the market a little bit, which has been fun. And
- 6:42Speaker 6: then I have Super. It is really low because, as
- 6:46Speaker 6: I said, I spend a lot of time overseas, so
- 6:48Speaker 6: my Super really has just been the last you know,
- 6:51Speaker 6: two years that I've been back in Australia. Yeah, that's
- 6:54Speaker 6: about five thousand dollars.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, Jess, So I'm not gonna lie.
- 6:57Speaker 5: When I asked a twenty two year old talk to
- 6:59Speaker 5: me about hearing the vestments, that is not the response
- 7:01Speaker 5: I was expecting.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I am very envious the where you are. It seems
- 7:04Speaker 4: like you're doing incredibly well.
- 7:06Speaker 5: I'm just so impressed. I want to keep asking questions.
- 7:09Speaker 5: I'm like, what is going on? Save it after the app? Okay, okay, sorry, sorry,
- 7:12Speaker 5: all right? So next question you mentioned mortgages before. How
- 7:16Speaker 5: much debt do you have and what's it made up of?
- 7:19Speaker 6: Yes, so I definitely have more debt at the moment
- 7:22Speaker 6: than i'd like. But we have two mortgages. So one
- 7:27Speaker 6: of them is two hundred and five thousand, and then
- 7:30Speaker 6: the others one hundred and sixty seven thousand, so they
- 7:33Speaker 6: were smaller properties, so the mortgages on them aren't too bad.
- 7:37Speaker 6: And we pay about two hundred and fifty a week
- 7:39Speaker 6: on one and two hundred and ten on the other.
- 7:42Speaker 6: And then we have recently installed solar panels on the
- 7:45Speaker 6: property we live in and we're paying about interest free
- 7:48Speaker 6: for five years, so that's about nine eight hundred. Then
- 7:53Speaker 6: we have a personal loan at the moment, which is
- 7:57Speaker 6: kind of new. We got that a couple months ago,
- 7:59Speaker 6: just to help us our renovations. We have like a
- 8:02Speaker 6: lump sum in one of our accounts that we don't
- 8:05Speaker 6: touch and that could have gone towards renovating. But with
- 8:09Speaker 6: me deciding to take a step back from working and
- 8:12Speaker 6: focus on training, I was a bit nervous to put
- 8:16Speaker 6: all that money into our renos and then not have
- 8:17Speaker 6: anything if something was to come up with either properties
- 8:21Speaker 6: or just life in general. So for us, it made
- 8:24Speaker 6: more sense to pay the extra. I think over the
- 8:26Speaker 6: two years of the loan, which is ten grand, we
- 8:30Speaker 6: pay an extra five hundred dollars, and I was happy
- 8:33Speaker 6: to put an extra five hundred dollars into that to
- 8:35Speaker 6: save us that extra money on the signing case something
- 8:38Speaker 6: did come up. We do have our small emergency fund,
- 8:42Speaker 6: but that's kind of an additional I haven't visil line,
- 8:45Speaker 6: so I've been paying that off for the last two years,
- 8:50Speaker 6: a little bit each week into a three four thousand dollars.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Four thousand dollars for invisil line. That is a money
- 8:55Speaker 5: win just at that side.
- 8:57Speaker 6: Note not quite, that's what I've got left to pay.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I was like, okay, yeah, alright, story four.
- 9:05Speaker 6: But yeah, I'm yeah, four to go, And then I
- 9:09Speaker 6: have hex, so that's about six grand. I did a
- 9:11Speaker 6: couple of subjects while I was overseas by a correspondence
- 9:16Speaker 6: and that's a he's left on them.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, very cool. That story didn't check out.
- 9:20Speaker 5: As a recent Invisile Line graduate and Jess being a
- 9:24Speaker 5: current invisil Line student, we were like four grand.
- 9:28Speaker 2: That doesn't check out. I give your number details, like
- 9:32Speaker 2: we need to get in contact with them. That stuff
- 9:34Speaker 2: of cost us eight grand each? Absolutely not.
- 9:37Speaker 5: But moving on, I want to know you seem pretty
- 9:40Speaker 5: savvy when it comes to money. Do you use shop
- 9:43Speaker 5: back when you're shopping online?
- 9:44Speaker 6: Yes? I do. I heard it and it took me
- 9:48Speaker 6: a little while after listening to the podcast to get
- 9:50Speaker 6: into it convert, but I have been getting into it.
- 9:53Speaker 6: I don't shop a lot online, which I hear often
- 9:55Speaker 6: in your money diaries, but I do my best. I
- 9:58Speaker 6: have the chrome intension and the apps, so whenever I
- 10:00Speaker 6: am shopping, there's being used. So I've got a few
- 10:03Speaker 6: things pending at the moment, but I've got about twenty
- 10:04Speaker 6: five dollars in that's been approved, and I've been keeping
- 10:07Speaker 6: an eye on the gift CUD percentages to buy some
- 10:10Speaker 6: more bunning scouchers and Jetstar gift cud that's really Sprout
- 10:14Speaker 6: Renovations and our travels.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Did you use our code when you signed up to
- 10:18Speaker 4: get yourself ten bucks as well?
- 10:19Speaker 6: I did? Yeah, which was nice.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Genius smart.
- 10:23Speaker 4: That's free money if anyone's doing stuff shot back, SotM.
- 10:26Speaker 2: That's the code.
- 10:27Speaker 4: I used it when I signed up to get the
- 10:29Speaker 4: ten dollars like you might.
- 10:30Speaker 2: As I didn't. I didn't get it. Maybe I should
- 10:32Speaker 2: hit them up.
- 10:33Speaker 5: I had to get it and test it and then
- 10:35Speaker 5: tell whom I wanted to work with them. They didn't
- 10:36Speaker 5: give me ten bucks for signing up.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Sucks for you. Yeah, what a stooge.
- 10:40Speaker 5: If anyone else wants to get ten bucks when I
- 10:42Speaker 5: couldn't go for it, ten out of ten can recommend
- 10:44Speaker 5: as a solid money win. Next question I have for you,
- 10:48Speaker 5: I feel like this is going to be a goodie jess.
- 10:50Speaker 5: What is your best money habit?
- 10:52Speaker 6: So, I think my best money habit is that I'm
- 10:55Speaker 6: continuously working on my budget and kind of the money
- 11:00Speaker 6: that's coming in. Working in the various jobs they have
- 11:04Speaker 6: over the last couple of years, haven't been earning a
- 11:07Speaker 6: set income weekly, monthly, yearly at all. So I have
- 11:11Speaker 6: one hundred different notes for pages on my computer writing
- 11:16Speaker 6: out different budgets and all of our bills and when
- 11:19Speaker 6: they come out each week or whether they're paid monthly,
- 11:22Speaker 6: and yeah, that we have at the moment, we have
- 11:25Speaker 6: three different budgets styles. One is if we've just made
- 11:29Speaker 6: the minimum that week and it pays our bills and
- 11:32Speaker 6: a little bit towards investing, a little bit saving and
- 11:35Speaker 6: our emergency fund, and then there's comfortable, and then there's
- 11:39Speaker 6: like extra plus and then our money gets divoted across
- 11:42Speaker 6: the different areas of our budgets depending on how much
- 11:45Speaker 6: money we've made each week. So that definitely, I think
- 11:48Speaker 6: is probably one of my best money habits is that, Yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 6: I'm just always on top of it and trying to
- 11:53Speaker 6: make my money go as far as possible.
- 11:55Speaker 4: That's a really cool idea for people who are living
- 11:58Speaker 4: with a variable income, having like a track client system
- 12:00Speaker 4: almost for your your budget of where it's at, because
- 12:03Speaker 4: we get questions a lot about variable income, and that's
- 12:06Speaker 4: such a smart way to do it because like your
- 12:08Speaker 4: base level would be bare minimum covering costs. That's the
- 12:11Speaker 4: most important thing any of us need to do, right.
- 12:14Speaker 4: But then on the times or the weeks when you
- 12:16Speaker 4: do have more money, it's nice to know where that's going,
- 12:19Speaker 4: because otherwise that's when we tend to just like spend
- 12:22Speaker 4: it on whatever and it just disappears exactly.
- 12:24Speaker 6: Yeah, in your mind, it becomes like extra money, exactly,
- 12:28Speaker 6: extra money you actually this week, and it should go somewhere, right. Yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 2: I learn that word on this podcast. Fungible. Yeah, I know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: I really do you know what? That word gives me
- 12:37Speaker 2: the ick? I know it's legitim sounds like fungus.
- 12:39Speaker 5: It's just it's gross, right, Like it's a gross word
- 12:42Speaker 5: like fungible, Like could you guys not have thought of
- 12:45Speaker 5: something cuter?
- 12:45Speaker 4: They could have, but they didn't.
- 12:47Speaker 5: So one out of ten do not recommend, all right,
- 12:49Speaker 5: I want to know. Let's flip this narrative on its head.
- 12:52Speaker 5: I ask every week, what is your worst money habit?
- 12:55Speaker 5: Give us the goss because I feel like you're good
- 12:57Speaker 5: at everything.
- 12:58Speaker 6: My worst money habit is definitely, I would say impulse buying.
- 13:02Speaker 6: It looks a little bit different to other people. When
- 13:05Speaker 6: I really want something, I will just buy it, regardless
- 13:08Speaker 6: of whether i'd like, you know, I could have saved
- 13:10Speaker 6: up for it, Like I don't know if you can
- 13:11Speaker 6: see in the background this little tank here is my sake.
- 13:15Speaker 6: Oh my god, bought it one day.
- 13:17Speaker 4: He just came home with a same That is very funny.
- 13:20Speaker 4: How did your partner feel about just coming home to
- 13:22Speaker 4: a snake?
- 13:25Speaker 6: Well, he actually is studying to be a zoo keeper,
- 13:29Speaker 6: so she's in the circus, he's at the zoo.
- 13:34Speaker 5: Like it's like a match made in heaven. It's an
- 13:36Speaker 5: obsessed with this couple. I want to know so much more.
- 13:40Speaker 5: Last question before we go for a really quick break.
- 13:43Speaker 5: What grade would you give your money habits if we
- 13:45Speaker 5: forced you to give yourself a grade?
- 13:46Speaker 6: I think I give myself a B plus. I think
- 13:49Speaker 6: I've been set up and I've continued some really good habits.
- 13:54Speaker 6: But when it comes to a little bit more of
- 13:57Speaker 6: a structure, because I haven't had one before, I do
- 14:00Speaker 6: struggle with that, especially, you know, when I have had
- 14:03Speaker 6: full time work or structures like you know, increasing super
- 14:06Speaker 6: for the future. I think that is where I need
- 14:09Speaker 6: a lot more work.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, I like that, but I also feel like,
- 14:13Speaker 5: as a woman who is twenty three now years old,
- 14:17Speaker 5: like a bee, I'm not nah like I'm just throwing
- 14:20Speaker 5: you straight in the bin. There, you are very close
- 14:22Speaker 5: to an A plus, my love. Let's talk more about
- 14:24Speaker 5: your zookeeper partner straight after this break though. All right,
- 14:32Speaker 5: we are back and I want to dive straight in
- 14:35Speaker 5: over the top of you, Jessica Ricci. I do apologize
- 14:38Speaker 5: this is a bit perfect, but I want to know
- 14:40Speaker 5: more about your zookeeper partner. Where'd you meet? How'd you meet? Like,
- 14:42Speaker 5: how long have you been together? You're already married and
- 14:45Speaker 5: you're twenty two. So to me this is just wild
- 14:47Speaker 5: because at twenty two I was not the most responsible human,
- 14:51Speaker 5: if we put it like that.
- 14:53Speaker 6: So, if I do say so myself, we have a
- 14:56Speaker 6: cute little.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Oh love, sorry, oh really wanted a more there.
- 15:01Speaker 6: So we met in Sunday school when we were children
- 15:04Speaker 6: and became best friends and we were in separal for
- 15:08Speaker 6: many years, and he actually told me when we were
- 15:10Speaker 6: twelve that he would marry me, and I was like,
- 15:12Speaker 6: your little creep stops. But then, you know, through life,
- 15:19Speaker 6: we hadn't seen each other for about six years, and
- 15:22Speaker 6: mainly due to my traveling, and I hadn't seen him
- 15:25Speaker 6: or his family or had any contact. And then on
- 15:28Speaker 6: Valentine's Day last year, we ran into each other and
- 15:33Speaker 6: then Yeah, basically within that week we were like, we're
- 15:36Speaker 6: still as obsesses we were when we were twelve. And
- 15:40Speaker 6: then we got married August last year, six months between
- 15:45Speaker 6: us meeting and getting married, but obviously we did have
- 15:48Speaker 6: that history. So yeah, because he told you when you
- 15:52Speaker 6: were twelve that he was going to marry you.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Did he say I told you so for that one?
- 15:57Speaker 2: Yeah, like did you have very cute you know what?
- 16:03Speaker 2: Anybody else would have seen that as a red flag.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Our money directs is like straight on in, let's go,
- 16:07Speaker 5: let's marry this man.
- 16:09Speaker 6: Yeah, that's so safe.
- 16:11Speaker 4: What are your plans for when you're traveling with the circus?
- 16:15Speaker 2: Is that?
- 16:16Speaker 4: Like will you be traveling, you know, state to state
- 16:18Speaker 4: because that's how you know, circuses generally will perform on
- 16:21Speaker 4: like a roving schedule where they're traveling around. What does
- 16:24Speaker 4: that look like for you and your partner because I'm
- 16:26Speaker 4: assuming being a zoo keeper there's a little bit less
- 16:29Speaker 4: flexibility there and he'd probably be based in one place.
- 16:33Speaker 6: Yeah, so the circus. I've yet to work in a
- 16:36Speaker 6: traveling circus. It's definitely a goal of mine, but I've
- 16:39Speaker 6: worked in more like corporate spaces of circus. So if
- 16:44Speaker 6: you have a big corporate event, people hire performers for those,
- 16:48Speaker 6: or I've worked in like stationary shows or but once
- 16:53Speaker 6: I have like residency contracts, So that does make it
- 16:55Speaker 6: a little bit easier for if I was to get
- 16:58Speaker 6: a contract that's traveling. We've already talked that he would,
- 17:01Speaker 6: you know, come with me and he would either be
- 17:04Speaker 6: a roady and help you know with pack up, pack
- 17:07Speaker 6: down that kind of like manual labor site because he's
- 17:10Speaker 6: done that in the past. He worked in sound and
- 17:12Speaker 6: learning prior to working with animals. Or I am trying
- 17:17Speaker 6: to convince him to do a surface acting with me.
- 17:20Speaker 6: He's not so keen. He has done knife throwing in
- 17:26Speaker 6: the past. And I don't know if you've ever seen,
- 17:28Speaker 6: but there's.
- 17:28Speaker 5: A wild I just came home with a snake. Oh yeah,
- 17:32Speaker 5: my partner's got to be a zerologist.
- 17:34Speaker 2: What do you do? Oh, I'm in the circus and
- 17:36Speaker 2: my partner throws knife.
- 17:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:38Speaker 5: But all of that supported by good financial underpinnings like
- 17:42Speaker 5: what you've got mortgages as.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Well, live your best life.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Live your best life.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I want to be you when I grow up. What
- 17:48Speaker 2: would you guys do together?
- 17:49Speaker 4: And also what do you use because there's like a
- 17:51Speaker 4: lot of different areas within like I guess the spectrum
- 17:54Speaker 4: of circus that you can specialize in, right.
- 17:56Speaker 6: Yes, So I'm an aerialist, so that's my main thing.
- 18:00Speaker 6: So I do anything that's in the air, silks, trapeze, lira, etc.
- 18:05Speaker 6: So I've worked in the circus professionally since I was fifteen.
- 18:11Speaker 6: So I took a year off school, did a full
- 18:13Speaker 6: time course, and then started working in the circus. Did
- 18:17Speaker 6: go back and finish school, but yeah, I've been working
- 18:20Speaker 6: since then, so that's like my main thing. I do
- 18:22Speaker 6: a little bit of ground stuff, but I'm a bit
- 18:24Speaker 6: clumsy on the ground. My safe place is in the air.
- 18:27Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, I'm obsessed with you. I love this
- 18:30Speaker 5: all right. When it comes down to it, I want
- 18:33Speaker 5: to know how did you end up with mortgages so young?
- 18:36Speaker 5: Can I be a little bit pervy and ask, because obviously,
- 18:39Speaker 5: when you're twenty two and you obviously have quite varied income,
- 18:43Speaker 5: it's not as easy as going to the bank and saying, hey,
- 18:46Speaker 5: I have a twenty percent deposit, give me a loan.
- 18:48Speaker 5: So I feel like there might be a little bit
- 18:50Speaker 5: more backstory there that I would love to know a
- 18:52Speaker 5: bit more about my love.
- 18:53Speaker 6: I'm glad you asked, because I love telling people how
- 18:57Speaker 6: I got into the property market because it's a little
- 19:00Speaker 6: bit different, and the kind of asterix I'll put on
- 19:04Speaker 6: it is that I was not looking for my dream
- 19:07Speaker 6: property and I was happy to be flexible with what
- 19:11Speaker 6: I was finding, so that gave me a lot more opportunities.
- 19:14Speaker 6: But when I was overseas, I was studying, and I
- 19:19Speaker 6: was one day I was just sitting in my room
- 19:20Speaker 6: and I was like, you know what, I want to
- 19:22Speaker 6: move back to a show and I want to buy
- 19:23Speaker 6: a house, which is really weird. I was really enjoying
- 19:25Speaker 6: living in Europe and never thought I would ever come back,
- 19:28Speaker 6: and so I on that contract. It was all the
- 19:30Speaker 6: despensers paid, so what we earned from that contract just
- 19:34Speaker 6: went straight into savings. We didn't have any bills, which
- 19:37Speaker 6: was really amazing for about nine months that I was
- 19:40Speaker 6: on that contract, and so I saved up a pretty penny.
- 19:44Speaker 6: But then COVID hit and I was stuck in London
- 19:48Speaker 6: during majority of the first stint of COVID, and so
- 19:52Speaker 6: all of that money went down the dream. Oh so
- 19:54Speaker 6: that was a bit sad because that was meant to be,
- 19:57Speaker 6: you know, my deposit for a house. So when I
- 19:59Speaker 6: came back, I was feeling a bit deflated. I only
- 20:02Speaker 6: had I think I came back with only about two
- 20:03Speaker 6: thousand Australian.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Dollars understandably so though.
- 20:07Speaker 6: I'm not going to get you very far on a
- 20:10Speaker 6: deposit for a house. But I came back and I
- 20:14Speaker 6: started working at a restaurant as soon as I got back,
- 20:16Speaker 6: and I worked as many shifts as they would give me,
- 20:19Speaker 6: so I think I was working fifty six hour weeks.
- 20:21Speaker 6: Towards the end of that, I took a second job
- 20:23Speaker 6: on the side. I was living with my month, so
- 20:27Speaker 6: I was really lucky not to have to pay for rent,
- 20:29Speaker 6: and I would mainly just eat the carcasses of what
- 20:32Speaker 6: grocery she was buying, so I didn't have to buy
- 20:35Speaker 6: a lot for myself. And I took the bus even
- 20:38Speaker 6: though I had a car, to save on those expenses,
- 20:41Speaker 6: and I saved about twenty grand. And I went to
- 20:44Speaker 6: the broker when I only had about five saved and said, hey,
- 20:47Speaker 6: this is my plan. I'm fast tracking to save twenty
- 20:51Speaker 6: grand in the next three months. Right now I only
- 20:53Speaker 6: have five, but I promise you I will get there,
- 20:55Speaker 6: What mortgage can I get and what do I need
- 20:59Speaker 6: to set up my finances to make sure that that
- 21:02Speaker 6: will happen early next year? And so I started looking
- 21:06Speaker 6: for properties about four months after I got home, and
- 21:10Speaker 6: I had that savings, but as we all know, the
- 21:13Speaker 6: property market has been a bit crazy, so a few
- 21:15Speaker 6: of my offers were rejected. But finally I found a
- 21:17Speaker 6: place that was about one hundred grand less than they
- 21:22Speaker 6: said they would loan me, and I was like, perfect,
- 21:25Speaker 6: because it's a much more affordable mortgage each week. So
- 21:28Speaker 6: I'm glad I did that. And I bought the property
- 21:30Speaker 6: on my own, so my now husband wasn't a part
- 21:33Speaker 6: of that at all. We kind of met during that process,
- 21:36Speaker 6: but that was my thing and I saw it through
- 21:39Speaker 6: on my own. And then the second property we did
- 21:42Speaker 6: buy together, we used that equity on the home I
- 21:45Speaker 6: had bought on my own to pay for everything for
- 21:48Speaker 6: the other property, so we had to put no money
- 21:50Speaker 6: towards that. We had quite a bit of equity. I
- 21:54Speaker 6: think it was about fifty grand in those six months
- 21:57Speaker 6: between when I bought this property and when we were
- 21:59Speaker 6: looking at the other property that we had to play with, So.
- 22:02Speaker 4: Holy Moly, do guys share your finances fully as a couple.
- 22:06Speaker 6: Yes, I know that lots of other couples don't, but
- 22:10Speaker 6: for us, it just makes it easier. He is happy
- 22:13Speaker 6: for me to take the reins with that. When we met,
- 22:15Speaker 6: he didn't work very much. He had a lot of
- 22:17Speaker 6: after pays, it paid debts and we kind of worked
- 22:20Speaker 6: together to get better habits and he's now like super interested.
- 22:24Speaker 6: But by putting it together, it just gives us a
- 22:26Speaker 6: little bit more money to work with each week and
- 22:30Speaker 6: stretch a bit further.
- 22:31Speaker 4: It's just whatever works to you, Like, there's no right
- 22:33Speaker 4: or wrong. Like you said, some couples that doesn't work,
- 22:35Speaker 4: but for you guys, it does and that's awesome.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I love it so much. So what's the property
- 22:40Speaker 5: plan moving forward? Is the plan to build up some
- 22:42Speaker 5: equity and purchase some new houses or what are we
- 22:46Speaker 5: doing when it comes to creating passive revenue?
- 22:48Speaker 6: Yes, so that is the plan. We are plenty on
- 22:52Speaker 6: sitting down with a broker again in a couple of
- 22:55Speaker 6: weeks to see if there's a potential for us to
- 23:00Speaker 6: buy another property before we go overseas next year and
- 23:04Speaker 6: see if that's something we want to do. So obviously
- 23:07Speaker 6: our finances don't are definitely not in a position at
- 23:09Speaker 6: the moment to buy somewhere. But by the end of
- 23:15Speaker 6: this year, we'll be ready to go back to full
- 23:17Speaker 6: time work, and so we'll probably sit down with them
- 23:19Speaker 6: and ask, Okay, what do we need to be earning,
- 23:22Speaker 6: what do our bank need to look like, how much
- 23:24Speaker 6: equity do we need to have on the property to
- 23:27Speaker 6: buy a third or a second investment property, and just
- 23:30Speaker 6: see if that's something we want to push ourselves to
- 23:33Speaker 6: do or if we'd rather just relax and not. But
- 23:37Speaker 6: we're definitely keen if we can do it, to do that,
- 23:40Speaker 6: just because once we go overseas, we won't really buy
- 23:43Speaker 6: for a few more years. So yeah, there's definitely the
- 23:47Speaker 6: opportunity to get another property. The valuation on the house
- 23:51Speaker 6: that we live in has gone up since we bought
- 23:54Speaker 6: the other property, so there is a little bit more
- 23:56Speaker 6: equality to play with again, which was quite nice. Yeah.
- 23:59Speaker 6: But yeah, and just by year at the moment and
- 24:02Speaker 6: working with someone to see if that's a possibility.
- 24:04Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, I'm obsessed, Like, that's crazy to me
- 24:08Speaker 5: that you're in such a strong financial position because you know,
- 24:12Speaker 5: me being me, knowing enough about mortgages and how it
- 24:15Speaker 5: all works. I genuinely thought you were going to come
- 24:17Speaker 5: in and be like, okay, cool, like there was some
- 24:19Speaker 5: family help there. But you're a little stellar saver and
- 24:22Speaker 5: I should never have doubted you.
- 24:23Speaker 2: What a queen.
- 24:24Speaker 6: I love this well, there was a little bit of
- 24:27Speaker 6: family help, you know, having your bills paid for and
- 24:30Speaker 6: not having to pay you know, MP and groceries every
- 24:34Speaker 6: week definitely, you know, makes it much easier to save
- 24:38Speaker 6: the deposits. So very grateful for that at the beginning.
- 24:41Speaker 4: Of course, of course, how did you find working overseas
- 24:46Speaker 4: in terms of income and tax because that's something we
- 24:49Speaker 4: get asked a lot. A lot of people are really interested,
- 24:51Speaker 4: I think now, especially after being locked up for a
- 24:54Speaker 4: couple of years during COVID, people want to know about
- 24:57Speaker 4: I guess that more nomadic lifestyle where you do you
- 25:00Speaker 4: get to trouble around and do things like that. Did
- 25:03Speaker 4: you find it really complicated, you know, living in one
- 25:06Speaker 4: country earning money, but then obviously, like your Australians, you've
- 25:09Speaker 4: got tax responsibilities here. How did you navigate that and
- 25:13Speaker 4: figure out, you know, what the right thing to do was.
- 25:16Speaker 6: So I buried my head in the sand Noorday, Yeah, honesty,
- 25:22Speaker 6: I'm probably not the best method. I I think kind
- 25:24Speaker 6: of end of last year, I finally did all my
- 25:26Speaker 6: tax returns for the last you know, six years or
- 25:29Speaker 6: whatever I had, but I haven't been done. But the
- 25:34Speaker 6: kind of benefit of me doing that, or how I
- 25:36Speaker 6: was able to do it without getting into too much
- 25:38Speaker 6: trouble with When I was overseas, I was under my
- 25:41Speaker 6: British passports, so I'm a dual citizens. Yeah, okay, So
- 25:44Speaker 6: most of the time when I lived in Canada, I
- 25:47Speaker 6: didn't work, so I didn't have to worry about tax
- 25:50Speaker 6: implications there, and then the rest of the time was
- 25:52Speaker 6: in Europe, so I was under my British pastplort. There's
- 25:55Speaker 6: definitely a few things that I am drew to look
- 25:58Speaker 6: at over there in terms of like I'm pretty sure
- 26:01Speaker 6: one of our contracts we had some sort of like
- 26:04Speaker 6: insurance or taxes that were under like a Germany umbrella,
- 26:09Speaker 6: and we have some money that we were owed back,
- 26:12Speaker 6: but it was all in German on the piece of paper,
- 26:14Speaker 6: and so I just never looked at it. But I'm
- 26:17Speaker 6: sure I've got some money over there that either needs
- 26:19Speaker 6: to be paid or I need to get back Yeah, Yeah,
- 26:22Speaker 6: definitely was the best attitude I had towards it. But yeah,
- 26:26Speaker 6: definitely moving forward when we go overseas next year, we're
- 26:28Speaker 6: kind of already setting up how that will look and
- 26:32Speaker 6: how I meant to do, you know, the right thing,
- 26:33Speaker 6: rather than you know, me just putting my head in
- 26:37Speaker 6: the sand and hoping for the best.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, great plan. I lack the sound of that.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, I think that's all we have time
- 26:43Speaker 5: for today, Jess, unless you had some sneaky last minute questions.
- 26:47Speaker 4: No, that was such a fun die that was sharing
- 26:50Speaker 4: with us. That was just so interesting.
- 26:53Speaker 5: I feel like we were on the a roller coaster literally,
- 26:56Speaker 5: or we've been thrown literally into the circus love lovell
- 26:59Speaker 5: thank you for having me, all right, Jess, Unfortunately it
- 27:03Speaker 5: is time.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Can you wrap the boring but important stuff?
- 27:05Speaker 4: Of course, don't forget guys, the advice shed on She's
