Transcript
- 0:00Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
- 0:03here, and I'm so excited to deliver little bits of insight
- 0:11on living your best, most extraordinary life with, of
- 0:16course, yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology,
- 0:21and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
- 0:27pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:30Let's do this. Welcome back to the Yinning at
- 0:34Life podcast. Today I'm talking about
- 0:38healthcare after 40, and I'm talking about the real stuff
- 0:42that no one warns you about and why I honestly believe that yin
- 0:49yoga might be one of the most powerful, affordable,
- 0:55accessible, and loving forms of healthcare that we have that
- 0:59most people are not taking advantage of.
- 1:03And that blows my mind. And I'm kind of hoping maybe
- 1:07after this episode, if you are not into yin yoga, that this
- 1:11might be the shift that you needed to get you on track with
- 1:21taking care of you. This episode is definitely for
- 1:26those of you who have been feeling changes, things like
- 1:30height and stress, hormonal shifts, maybe a little bit more
- 1:36fatigue, maybe more tightness and tension in your shoulders
- 1:41and in your hips. We're going to talk about that.
- 1:45So grab yourself a latte, head over to the couch, and let's do
- 1:50this. So let's be real for a second.
- 1:56No one prepares you for the moment your body starts sending
- 1:59you little love notes like, oh hey, Remember Me?
- 2:05I'd really like you to stretch. Or maybe we could go to bed
- 2:10before midnight for once. Hello.
- 2:13Wouldn't that be a concept? The reality is, after 40, things
- 2:18start shifting. Hormones, recovery, sleep,
- 2:23digestion, and suddenly it feels like your body is demanding a
- 2:27whole new level of attention. And honestly, your body deserves
- 2:34it and you deserve it. So here's something funny.
- 2:40I was chatting with one of my patients the other day in my
- 2:43reflexology practice. We kind of chuckled because we
- 2:48realized that our quote UN quote self-care used to be like, oh,
- 2:52I'm going to take a bubble bath. I'm going to put a face mask on.
- 2:56Maybe I'm going to go to the spa, right?
- 2:59Who remembers those days? Oh my God, I did.
- 3:02I would have a such a stressful week at the office and I'd be
- 3:06like Saturday, I am booked into the spa all day, do all the
- 3:11things. I would feel great for a few
- 3:13hours and then what? Now self-care is like, oh, it's
- 3:21taking my magnesium before bedtime.
- 3:24It's having an early night, not being up until 2:00 AM, staring
- 3:28at a screen. It's remembering to breathe
- 3:31before answering that stressful e-mail, Right?
- 3:35Like that's self-care. It's like moving my body.
- 3:38It's finding quiet time. But seriously, as our bodies
- 3:44change, the kind of care that we need also has to change.
- 3:48Like, that's just, I'm sorry, but that's just reality.
- 3:51We just can't keep pushing through more and more and more.
- 3:58It just doesn't work. And I'll tell you something, if
- 4:01you've ever burnt out before, like you've had adrenal fatigue
- 4:04or you've had a massive, you know, like physical meltdown, I
- 4:08will tell you as you get older, it is so much harder and takes
- 4:13so much more time to bounce back from that.
- 4:18And you see the reason why is because our nervous systems are
- 4:21already maxed out now from years of doing rushing, caretaking,
- 4:27working, pushing, hustling, right?
- 4:33And that's where you and yoga comes in like this big hug
- 4:38saying, you know what? It's OK, you can slow down now.
- 4:44You see, yin yoga isn't about pushing or striving.
- 4:49If you're doing that in your yin practice, you've definitely be
- 4:52doing it wrong. And you definitely have not
- 4:54practiced with me because I'm all about softening, pausing,
- 4:59and letting go. About supporting my body in a
- 5:02way that I can createspace physically, emotionally,
- 5:07energetically, so that my body can restore itself.
- 5:11Because honestly, it's meant to. And when you spend time in
- 5:18stillness, your body finally gets to switch off that flight
- 5:23or flight state, right? The sympathetic nervous system
- 5:27state, and it moves into rest and digest, rest and repair.
- 5:31The parasympathetic state. The only place where healing
- 5:37takes place is in the parasympathetic state.
- 5:42That's when the magic happens. I'm going to say it again.
- 5:46The only place where your body heals, your nervous system
- 5:56heals, is when you're in the parasympathetic state.
- 6:00This is where your blood flow improves.
- 6:03Your organs get nourished, your hormones balance, your mind
- 6:07clears, your emotions start to settle.
- 6:10And you know what? You know what the best part is?
- 6:13This is all natural. You don't need any prescription
- 6:16drugs. No side effects, no
- 6:18appointments, no sitting in a doctor's office for three hours,
- 6:22no sitting in a hospital ER department waiting for 12 hours.
- 6:27No big fat bill at the end. It's just you and your breath.
- 6:32And at home, like, could it be any easier?
- 6:36You don't even need any fancy Lululemon clothing, just a few
- 6:42really inexpensive props, some extra little goodies that you
- 6:46have at home like pillows and blankets and cushions and
- 6:50towels. Because the reality is, is that
- 6:55the rising cost of Healthcare is not a joke.
- 6:59Now, I live in Canada and I'm in Ontario, and I'm still very
- 7:03blessed to have, you know, healthcare that is subsidized,
- 7:07that's paid for. But it's starting to shift
- 7:11already. It's starting to shift where
- 7:13it's like, OK, I want to have this blood work taken.
- 7:16Oh, OK. Well, you have to pay for that
- 7:17now. Oh, I didn't have to pay for it
- 7:19before. Yeah, you have to pay for it
- 7:20now. And so we're starting to pay
- 7:25more for appointments. We're getting less coverage.
- 7:31We're having to pay more for tests, more for supplements.
- 7:35Like the cost of taking care of yourself is rising and rising
- 7:40and rising. And yet so many of the things
- 7:44that our bodies are craving like rest, movement, breath, are
- 7:49actually things we can give to ourselves and that don't cost
- 7:52anything but a little bit of time and maybe a very small
- 7:56investment. You know, my monthly membership
- 8:00on my app is $0.67 a day. You can't even get a coffee for
- 8:06that. And my app has Yan yoga, some of
- 8:13it blended with very gentle movement.
- 8:17I have breath work sequences, guided meditations, audio music
- 8:22playlists. I have yin yoga series for like
- 8:27sleep and anxiety, for organ support, for mental health, for
- 8:34menopause. Like this is what I call
- 8:40preventative healthcare. My app is preventative
- 8:44healthcare for $0.67 a day and yin yoga.
- 8:53Honestly, truthfully, even if you don't do the other things,
- 8:55yin yoga is still preventative healthcare.
- 8:58It's what keeps your energy flowing so imbalances don't turn
- 9:02into illness. And quite frankly, that's why I
- 9:06ended up creating yin yoga bundles because people were
- 9:11like, well, I want to do something specific for sleep, or
- 9:14I want to do something specific for organs, or I want to do
- 9:18something specific for my nervous system.
- 9:21And so I mapped it out. Intentional journeys to help you
- 9:26take care of yourself before your body and your mind start
- 9:31breaking down. I've got the calm and centered
- 9:36path. This is a series which is
- 9:39perfect if you're the person who's feeling overwhelmed and
- 9:43just needs deep rest and nervous system repair.
- 9:47I have the what I call the Radiant Reset, which is inspired
- 9:51by traditional Chinese medicine and helps you balance and
- 9:54support your organs and your emotions.
- 9:58And then I have like the yen Reset journey.
- 10:02This is like a full 90 day retreat for your body, mind and
- 10:06spirit. Any of these bundles you can do
- 10:10at home at your own pace. Practices range from 5 minutes
- 10:15all the way up to 153045 and 60 minutes, and they are all
- 10:21designed around reconnecting, releasing, and remembering that
- 10:26you are your best healthcare plan.
- 10:31Like what? I want you to really start to
- 10:34understand, and I'll tell you that this is kind of sad, but a
- 10:38lot of people don't realize how valuable their health is until
- 10:41something happens. We kind of think we're a little
- 10:45indestructible, but I'll tell you when you get over that 40
- 10:50mark, you may not be as indestructible as you think.
- 10:58And in a system where the healthcare providers are so
- 11:05overworked, they're so overloaded, and there's less
- 11:08support, it has never been a more crucial time for you to
- 11:14start taking care of your health if you haven't already.
- 11:20And your health doesn't have to be complicated and it doesn't
- 11:23have to be expensive, but it has to start with awareness and with
- 11:28listening. And I'll tell you, when you're
- 11:31running around like a hamster on a wheel, guess what?
- 11:36There's no awareness happening. There's no tuning in.
- 11:39There's no listening. And when that's not happening,
- 11:42well, you know what? You don't even know what needs
- 11:46to be addressed. But when you start to pause and
- 11:52you give yourself some stillness, you'll hear what your
- 11:58body needs. And to be quite frank here, your
- 12:02body doesn't want perfection, it just wants your attention.
- 12:09So tonight I'm going to give you a little a little little test
- 12:14here, a little challenge. Instead of picking up your phone
- 12:21or your tablet and scrolling, how about you roll out your yoga
- 12:25mat or even a blanket on a carpet and start to breathe in
- 12:31and out of your nose for a count of four.
- 12:36Let your shoulders drop, let your belly soften, and let
- 12:41yourself be cared for by you. Even 5 minutes of closing your
- 12:49eyes and breathing deeply every single day can make such a
- 12:54difference in slowing down because you know what?
- 12:59You are worth slowing down for. And I don't know if you guys
- 13:04know who Mel Robbins is, but she's a very famous podcaster
- 13:09and she has this quote. She says no one's coming to save
- 13:13you. And I remember the first time I
- 13:16heard it, I thought, whoa, that's rude.
- 13:19And then I realized, oh, my God, she's so right.
- 13:22There isn't anybody coming to save me.
- 13:25It's me. I got to save me.
- 13:29So, you know, I want you to save yourself too, because you're
- 13:36here to live an extraordinary life.
- 13:40But you got to have all the parts to make that happen.
- 13:46So if this is ringing bells, this is resonating.
- 13:49You're like, Oh my God, yes, you're right.
- 13:51You know what? I have to start being more
- 13:53preventative with my healthcare. Then explore my new yen Yoga
- 13:57bundles inside my app. I will link everything in the
- 14:01show notes so it makes it super easy for you to check out.
- 14:05The bundles can be purchased for free as part of an active
- 14:09monthly or annual membership, or you can pay a one time fee and
- 14:16get lifetime access to them. But they're truly created with
- 14:21love. And for this season of life that
- 14:24us people over 40 are in, like, choosing calm in a world that
- 14:33keeps rushing is honestly the most important thing that you
- 14:41can do for yourself right now. You can stop the hustle culture.
- 14:49One breath at a time, one day at a time, even 1 moment at a time.
- 15:03Speak gentle with yourself, you're doing beautifully.
- 15:06Keep going, You just need a little extra.
