- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 4: for millennials who want financial freedom. My friends, today is Friday,
- 1:05Speaker 4: which means we're getting the team together, not the whole team.
- 1:09Speaker 5: But you heard that voice.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Miss Jessica Ricci is back, but we are here to
- 1:13Speaker 4: celebrate you our incredible She's on the Money community today,
- 1:17Speaker 4: Miss jess g Ricci is back sharing her favorite money
- 1:20Speaker 4: wins from the community.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Beck has a few sneaky broke tips.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Which she hasn't sold us on, but like any broke tip,
- 1:27Speaker 4: will take it at this point in time, Beck like,
- 1:29Speaker 4: we're in a cost of living crisis.
- 1:31Speaker 5: We need whatever we can get.
- 1:33Speaker 4: We're gonna be helping to answer a juicy money dilemma,
- 1:35Speaker 4: which this week is all about the impact of work
- 1:38Speaker 4: credit card.
- 1:39Speaker 5: Can have on your personal credit score.
- 1:41Speaker 4: And we're going to be unpacking something that you slid
- 1:43Speaker 4: into our DMS about which this week we're chatting about
- 1:45Speaker 4: being financially taken advantage of in a new relationship.
- 1:50Speaker 5: Spicy juicy. Let's get into catching up though, Jess, how
- 1:55Speaker 5: was Japan?
- 1:56Speaker 2: My god? I loved it? Everyone was so nice. I
- 2:00Speaker 2: speak about three words of Japanese, but everyone was so
- 2:03Speaker 2: just kind in finding a way to understand or communicate
- 2:06Speaker 2: with us. And everything was so cheap. I can believe
- 2:10Speaker 2: how cheap it was once I'm.
- 2:11Speaker 5: In a committed relationship. Now is seven eleven? Oh my god?
- 2:17Speaker 2: Like the next level?
- 2:18Speaker 6: Good?
- 2:19Speaker 2: If seven eleven here? If you're listening, we love you
- 2:21Speaker 2: guys already, but you could be better.
- 2:23Speaker 4: You're like, I am now a seven eleven ambassador, and
- 2:25Speaker 4: Jess is like, you can do better.
- 2:27Speaker 7: What's your favorite Japanese seven eleven product?
- 2:31Speaker 2: I can't pick what, so they do the honor Geary
- 2:34Speaker 2: the honor Uri was really good.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Yeah, you talked about that a lot.
- 2:37Speaker 2: The karag they do, like predrat the things.
- 2:38Speaker 5: I really believe that seven eleven in Japan does fried chicken.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah. And the crazy thing is is you can go
- 2:44Speaker 2: to seven eleven in Japan and get a wholesome, well
- 2:47Speaker 2: made meal, like there is a whole like noodle dishes,
- 2:50Speaker 2: fish dishes, rice dishes, like there are all of these
- 2:53Speaker 2: pre made things that if I lived here, when I'm
- 2:56Speaker 2: running late for somewhere, if I've had a big day
- 2:58Speaker 2: and i want something quick and easy all the time,
- 2:59Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, I just go to my gus.
- 3:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Whereas if there was that option at our like so well,
- 3:05Speaker 2: literally and everything is really affordable. They do like little
- 3:09Speaker 2: packets of candy. You're a dollar a dollar, yeah, or
- 3:12Speaker 2: a dollar a dollar day. It's crazy how cheap it is.
- 3:15Speaker 2: You can make your own iced coffee, you can make smoothie.
- 3:18Speaker 5: You were saying when you got back. The meals that
- 3:20Speaker 5: you just mentioned were like five bucks each, right, so cheap.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And even when we went out to eat at restaurants
- 3:25Speaker 2: and stuff, it average like maybe fifteen dollars a person
- 3:28Speaker 2: like for like really big generous well made meals. It
- 3:32Speaker 2: wass so phenomenal. The culture was amazing.
- 3:34Speaker 5: I just thought the Japan would be a money weed.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That's what I thought too. I would highly recommend it
- 3:39Speaker 2: to anyone who wants to go. I loved it.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I'm so envious because I have never had Japan as
- 3:45Speaker 4: somewhere to I guess go on holiday. I've always been like, oh,
- 3:49Speaker 4: I really want to go, obviously, like tree blossom season
- 3:52Speaker 4: looks beautiful, and like I'm a snow bunny, so I
- 3:55Speaker 4: really want to go to the snow over there.
- 3:57Speaker 5: However, I've always been like, yep, like I'll go. Do
- 3:59Speaker 5: Europe go this that?
- 4:00Speaker 4: The other Everyone that comes back from Japan is like
- 4:03Speaker 4: I would go again. I'm going to put it on
- 4:06Speaker 4: my list of places that Steve and I go.
- 4:08Speaker 8: Do you reckon?
- 4:08Speaker 5: I can take a baby? Is a baby friendly? Do
- 4:10Speaker 5: you reckon?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Jess? I reckon for sure? And I don't reckon. People
- 4:12Speaker 2: would be like happy to go out of their way
- 4:14Speaker 2: to accommodate you.
- 4:15Speaker 5: They don't even have to. They just have to not
- 4:17Speaker 5: kick me out of the rest.
- 4:19Speaker 6: That's all.
- 4:20Speaker 5: I asked, really really low bar to ask. So you
- 4:23Speaker 5: loved Japan?
- 4:24Speaker 2: Loved it? But I missed you.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Guys. We missed you too.
- 4:27Speaker 4: We just spent well a few episodes just talking absolute
- 4:30Speaker 4: smack about you.
- 4:31Speaker 5: So, Beck, how's your.
- 4:35Speaker 7: Week been well going after that? It's been very normal.
- 4:39Speaker 7: I didn't go to Japan.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Oh, I'm so sorry.
- 4:42Speaker 8: No, it was a really, really lovely week.
- 4:43Speaker 7: The weather has been beautiful, and yeah, I've just I
- 4:46Speaker 7: feel like I've been busy but doing nothing super exciting.
- 4:50Speaker 8: So that's me in a nutshell love it? What about you?
- 4:53Speaker 5: No, that's the same as me. Same as me.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Everyone had these big I guess grand flannel plans over
- 4:58Speaker 4: last weekend and I just stayed in bed, like, went
- 5:02Speaker 4: to the beach with my family, had a few glasses
- 5:05Speaker 4: of non alcoholic sparkling.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 4: It was honestly so chill and so needed. I did
- 5:11Speaker 4: get gifted a few baby things. Oh, my influencer status
- 5:14Speaker 4: is paying off, guys. Finally the baby carrier I want
- 5:18Speaker 4: got gifted to me.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Wow, and I put my cat in.
- 5:21Speaker 2: It, hue. Yep.
- 5:22Speaker 5: So that was basically the highlight.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Of my week. Something else exciting happened this week.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Too, Oh yeah, Oh, completely forgot that one.
- 5:29Speaker 4: On Tuesday, my third book Property buy Shees on the
- 5:32Speaker 4: money came out. Oh my god, yeah, I forgot Yeah, congratulations.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Imagine if it was the day that I was recording
- 5:39Speaker 4: this and I only just remembered it was my book
- 5:40Speaker 4: launch day.
- 5:43Speaker 5: WHOA, that would be embarrassing. Glad that didn't happen.
- 5:46Speaker 2: It's so exciting to see so many people getting their
- 5:48Speaker 2: copies and being really pumped. And you know, so many
- 5:51Speaker 2: people have been popping the three of the books together
- 5:53Speaker 2: and they look so horrible.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Most like, we picked those colors, yes, so that they
- 5:58Speaker 4: looked cute together on a books.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Yeah, we got you girls, the Booktop Girlies, the girls,
- 6:02Speaker 2: you get to get it.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 4: And for the Booktop Girlies, all of the spines line up,
- 6:07Speaker 4: all of the like headings line up, like everything that
- 6:10Speaker 4: was good together.
- 6:11Speaker 5: We made sure.
- 6:11Speaker 4: That's very very important to me. But yeah, that happened
- 6:15Speaker 4: this week. But to be honest, the cat and the
- 6:16Speaker 4: baby carrier probably trumps it.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Be honest, Let's be honest.
- 6:21Speaker 4: This is not about us though, nor is it about
- 6:24Speaker 4: my cat Bailey in a baby carrier.
- 6:25Speaker 5: It is actually about the community. So Jess, I gotta it.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Chi, Can you let us know what money wins you've
- 6:30Speaker 4: pulled from the community.
- 6:31Speaker 5: This week to share.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Absolutely my first money when this week comes from Hailey,
- 6:35Speaker 2: who said I was in Bali last week and I
- 6:37Speaker 2: turned on my rooming for about fifteen minutes. Three hours later,
- 6:40Speaker 2: I received the warning text messages from Optus stating that
- 6:43Speaker 2: I had used fifty dollars, then one hundred dollars all
- 6:47Speaker 2: the way up to seven hundred and fifty dollars in
- 6:49Speaker 2: charges over my plans STARTA. I was obviously devastated, especially
- 6:53Speaker 2: because I was only using my phone because I was
- 6:55Speaker 2: waiting for what turned out to be a proposal surprise.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Disputed it with Optus and they credited the seven hundred
- 7:02Speaker 2: and fifty dollars, and they also had a great customer
- 7:04Speaker 2: service during the process.
- 7:06Speaker 5: And you got why you got engaged? Why why not
- 7:09Speaker 5: more on this? What the heck?
- 7:11Speaker 8: Sorry, I screamed before.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Remember the time I did that in Dubai.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yess oh my god.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Yes, it was so bad, not a time.
- 7:19Speaker 4: So like the phone plan that I had, I made
- 7:21Speaker 4: sure it had roaming, so I was like, no, guys,
- 7:24Speaker 4: like I have checked unequivocally, I have five.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Dollars a day roaming. This is why I'm with this plant.
- 7:29Speaker 4: It makes sense right above and beyond like I literally
- 7:33Speaker 4: did my research. What I didn't do my research on
- 7:36Speaker 4: was if you turn your phone on while you're in
- 7:38Speaker 4: Dubai even though you're on your way to.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Europe, doesn't count.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Doesn't count because Dubai was not included. And how much
- 7:44Speaker 4: did we rack up? Like fifteen hundred dollars? I said
- 7:47Speaker 4: to everybody, I was like, don't worry, I've got roaming
- 7:49Speaker 4: five dollars a day using my pre intersting data. Jess,
- 7:52Speaker 4: you tether Beck, you tell everybody tethered my phone.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Use my data in our stopover.
- 7:58Speaker 4: I think we spent like maybe because Dubai's are not cheap,
- 8:01Speaker 4: Dubai was expensive. I think we spent like one hundred
- 8:03Speaker 4: dollars at McDonald's between all of us. WHOA, so it
- 8:06Speaker 4: cost me one hundred bucks at McDonald's, which is not
- 8:08Speaker 4: a complaint. I was like, well, let's get it, about
- 8:11Speaker 4: fifteen hundred dollars to sit in that McDonald's on our phone.
- 8:14Speaker 2: For half an hour while we waited for because we
- 8:16Speaker 2: didn't want to talk to each other because we didn't
- 8:17Speaker 2: want a flight for like twenty.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Hours we wereted.
- 8:21Speaker 4: And then I was like absolutely not satan, I mean
- 8:23Speaker 4: I did get out of it.
- 8:25Speaker 5: It took a lot.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Like Hayley jumped on the phone, had a.
- 8:28Speaker 5: Little chat, but Hailey got engaged.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Congratulations, Well what else have you got Jess?
- 8:32Speaker 8: Congrats?
- 8:33Speaker 2: Next, I've got money in from Sarah, who said my
- 8:35Speaker 2: money in is I bought the iPhone fifteen promacs for
- 8:38Speaker 2: one hundred and eighty dollars.
- 8:40Speaker 5: No, we didn't have.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I traded in my iPhone fourteen pro for Oney ten
- 8:45Speaker 2: and I signed up for a BYO plan with Vodaphone,
- 8:48Speaker 2: which gave me another thousand dollars off the phone. Also,
- 8:52Speaker 2: my work also gives us fifty dollars a month towards
- 8:55Speaker 2: our phone plan money. We oh, okay, furnessing the system.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Well, Sarah, we all want new phones in this team,
- 9:02Speaker 4: but none of us are planning on buying them because
- 9:05Speaker 4: we're all stingy.
- 9:06Speaker 2: My phone is literally like destroyed and I'm still like,
- 9:10Speaker 2: oh it.
- 9:12Speaker 7: Is smash and yeah, you've had that for like twenty
- 9:16Speaker 7: thousand years.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I'm waiting for like a bonus Flybys points or something.
- 9:22Speaker 2: But anyway, Next, IP want money in from Ashley, who
- 9:24Speaker 2: said money win. My partner asked me to do a
- 9:26Speaker 2: budget for him so we can be better prepared for
- 9:28Speaker 2: bills in the future.
- 9:29Speaker 5: That would be so sexy.
- 9:30Speaker 2: She also included a bonus cat pick for vd.
- 9:35Speaker 5: We love I love that. She said, it's a bonus
- 9:37Speaker 5: cat pick for VD.
- 9:39Speaker 7: AH.
- 9:39Speaker 5: The other day, I was reading the Money Wins thread.
- 9:41Speaker 5: It was on the pod.
- 9:43Speaker 4: I actually used this as one of the money wins
- 9:45Speaker 4: and someone literally was like, also, here's a picture of
- 9:47Speaker 4: my dog.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Because I know v will ask you.
- 9:48Speaker 2: We love absolutely.
- 9:50Speaker 5: I will thank you for knowing me so well.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Guys. Next, I've got a book win from Alissa, who
- 9:56Speaker 2: said I went to Dimmicks on the weekend to buy
- 9:58Speaker 2: a book and they had boxes of her books for members.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I scored three books which I've been wanting to read,
- 10:04Speaker 2: with the back covers ripped off, but I saved about
- 10:06Speaker 2: sixty bucks money.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Win her books.
- 10:09Speaker 7: How cute, poor little hurt books. Also, talking about cheap books,
- 10:13Speaker 7: are libraries? Can we please make them trendy again? It
- 10:17Speaker 7: is free?
- 10:18Speaker 4: And also, jess and I worked this out recently. We
- 10:20Speaker 4: should have worked this out a very long time ago, though,
- 10:22Speaker 4: shouldn't we have? Jessica turns out authors get paid royalties
- 10:27Speaker 4: when you hire books or do you borrow books. Higher
- 10:29Speaker 4: books from the library. So like your author, your favorite
- 10:33Speaker 4: author is not missing out when it's good when you,
- 10:37Speaker 4: I guess, borrow books from the library. Although if you
- 10:40Speaker 4: are an author, you actually have to sign up to
- 10:42Speaker 4: that program yourself, and we hadn't so fun.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Fact for everybody, it's a win for you, it's a
- 10:47Speaker 2: win for the author.
- 10:49Speaker 4: It is now a win for the author because I
- 10:50Speaker 4: have now signed up tears program.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But perfect.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I think I love the most the fact that you
- 10:55Speaker 4: know how some people are like, oh, I really want
- 10:57Speaker 4: to support the author though, like you are.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Yeah, money, you don't have to feel bad.
- 11:01Speaker 8: That's great.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Next, I've got a money win from Kira who said
- 11:03Speaker 2: money Wind took all our bottles and cans to containers
- 11:06Speaker 2: for change and got thirty dollars cash back to put
- 11:09Speaker 2: in our special money box.
- 11:10Speaker 5: See I wish that was available in what are they actually?
- 11:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know when I feel like we must
- 11:16Speaker 2: be getting closed. I think it was this year.
- 11:17Speaker 5: We're going to be crazy at the recycling bins in
- 11:19Speaker 5: the office.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Now I'm going to be that brown who says to everybody,
- 11:22Speaker 2: give me your hands, give me your hands.
- 11:24Speaker 5: I want to get a can crusher so that you
- 11:26Speaker 5: can stack more in your car.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Just I want to set like a ridiculous goal. Do
- 11:29Speaker 2: you remember. I remember a few years g I saw
- 11:31Speaker 2: a girl paid for her wedding by recycling cans, and yeah,
- 11:35Speaker 2: I remember seeing the article. And she would go to
- 11:37Speaker 2: like her local like pubs and stuff and be like, hey, like,
- 11:39Speaker 2: all clear out your recycling things for you if you
- 11:41Speaker 2: can be permission. They're like yeah, so, and she paid
- 11:44Speaker 2: for like their full wedding by collecting cans and bottles.
- 11:46Speaker 2: And I wouldn't go that, but I think it would
- 11:49Speaker 2: be really fun to be like, I want to set
- 11:50Speaker 2: this huge goal car, yeah, something like that, and then
- 11:54Speaker 2: just save a bunch of cans.
- 11:55Speaker 4: If you've ever done that, can you please slide into
- 11:57Speaker 4: our dams so we can get you on the pod.
- 11:59Speaker 5: I feel like that would be so fun.
- 12:01Speaker 2: So and then lastly, I've got a money win from
- 12:04Speaker 2: kai who said money win. I cashed in some Velocity
- 12:07Speaker 2: Frequent Flyer points for a free cruise with Virgin Voyages.
- 12:10Speaker 5: What how many points?
- 12:12Speaker 2: WHOA? I don't know, and I got an awesome points
- 12:15Speaker 2: conversion rate five cents per point equals winning.
- 12:18Speaker 8: Oh my gosh, sick.
- 12:20Speaker 5: How good is that?
- 12:21Speaker 2: I never even knew you could do that.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Okay, So the other day Gabby and I so like,
- 12:25Speaker 4: I have the seven eleven app, and as you guys know, like,
- 12:27Speaker 4: irrespective of the fact that I am a seven eleven ambassador,
- 12:30Speaker 4: I believe I got this position because I worked so
- 12:32Speaker 4: hard at seven eleven during my free time.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Anyway, saw on the app the other day that.
- 12:37Speaker 4: If you bought a sausage roll, you got one hundred
- 12:39Speaker 4: Velocity Frequent Flyer points, and sausage rolls that day were
- 12:42Speaker 4: a dollar. So I basically got one hundred Velocity points.
- 12:45Speaker 5: For a dollar and a free sausage roll, is how
- 12:48Speaker 5: we saw it.
- 12:48Speaker 8: Yess exactly right.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Anyway, phenomenal is that's.
- 12:53Speaker 5: A crazy cut.
- 12:54Speaker 2: That's everything I've got.
- 12:54Speaker 5: I love it.
- 12:55Speaker 4: I feel like that is a very good Welcome back
- 12:57Speaker 4: to the Friday Drinks episodes.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Please don't give us again.
- 13:00Speaker 8: Please don't go anywhere we were going.
- 13:04Speaker 2: We go to America and approximately.
- 13:08Speaker 4: But that's okay, Okay, Beck's going to miss us because
- 13:11Speaker 4: we're going to do a few episodes without Beck.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Sorry. Beck, we love you, but you were coming to America.
- 13:16Speaker 2: That really hurts. You've got important things.
- 13:17Speaker 8: I dot the acrass, So sorry, yeah.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Yeah, we've been nominated for a pretty big award, Beck.
- 13:22Speaker 4: We have been nominated for Podcast of the Year Big
- 13:25Speaker 4: Dog Energy. But both jess and I are out of
- 13:27Speaker 4: the country, so we thought this.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Is the second year in a row. This is we
- 13:30Speaker 2: haven't been during the last year wh we went to Europe.
- 13:33Speaker 2: There was like two different awards ceremonies the same night
- 13:36Speaker 2: that we had to.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Fly out, and I had to prayer record all my
- 13:40Speaker 4: videos and stuff in case I won, And it was
- 13:42Speaker 4: the most awkward experience because you're like recording this video, Oh,
- 13:45Speaker 4: thank you so much, like I'm so grateful to have
- 13:48Speaker 4: one when you didn't know you were winning or not,
- 13:51Speaker 4: and so I wish I had not. We did end
- 13:53Speaker 4: up winning, which was very cool. But hopefully we come
- 13:57Speaker 4: home with a win because you're going all the way
- 13:59Speaker 4: to the Acress to represent the ses on the Money team.
- 14:02Speaker 7: It's a big responsibility on my shoulders.
- 14:04Speaker 8: Looking forward to a.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Fun selfieve you with a trophy hopefully, Yeah, definitely.
- 14:07Speaker 4: He goes across to knock on wood, don't don't jinx
- 14:10Speaker 4: at Jessica, but to your side of the table, Miss Beck,
- 14:15Speaker 4: what if you got when it comes to broke.
- 14:17Speaker 7: Tips yes, okay, so broke tips. I always get a
- 14:20Speaker 7: little bit nervous.
- 14:22Speaker 4: I don't know, because feel like these tips are so
- 14:24Speaker 4: good they're gonna blow people's minds.
- 14:26Speaker 8: Yes, yeah, exactly. I do hope these coming useful.
- 14:29Speaker 7: The ones that people send me are always really good
- 14:31Speaker 7: and my ones are always a little bit silly. But
- 14:34Speaker 7: let's give this a go. So the first one comes
- 14:36Speaker 7: from Charlie. I think this is a really great tip.
- 14:38Speaker 7: So Charlie says, for friends birthdays, for a cheap and
- 14:42Speaker 7: meaningful present, go to kmart or office works or wherever.
- 14:45Speaker 7: If you have a printer at home, sick in print
- 14:47Speaker 7: off photos of them. You can print off a bunch
- 14:49Speaker 7: of small photos for like fifteen cents each, or one
- 14:52Speaker 7: big poster, or you could like you know, make little
- 14:54Speaker 7: canvases or like.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Stick little that's cute pictures and cards.
- 14:58Speaker 7: Yeah, and like, for example, my friend made me this
- 15:00Speaker 7: board game was amazing, you know, the Game of Life. Yeah,
- 15:03Speaker 7: every single card in the deck was like a different
- 15:05Speaker 7: thing that happened in my life. I'll have to like
- 15:09Speaker 7: send photos or something because it's like it's unbelievable, like
- 15:12Speaker 7: it's incredible, and I don't know how much it would
- 15:14Speaker 7: have cost. I don't imagine too much printing in that time.
- 15:18Speaker 4: And the research and the thought, oh my gosh, the
- 15:21Speaker 4: best present I've ever.
- 15:22Speaker 8: Heard of, totally.
- 15:23Speaker 7: And for my best friend's birthday, I got everyone in
- 15:26Speaker 7: our friend group and every one of her friends to
- 15:28Speaker 7: send videos like a little happy birthday message, and I
- 15:31Speaker 7: cut it all up together and that.
- 15:32Speaker 8: Was free, and so she loved it.
- 15:35Speaker 7: So something like that, like, if you worried about someone's
- 15:37Speaker 7: birthday coming up, you don't have to spend any money,
- 15:40Speaker 7: but you do have to spend some time.
- 15:42Speaker 8: So that's one.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Well, if you remember one of our Friday Drinks episodes,
- 15:45Speaker 4: I forgot Jess's birthday, so there was that you.
- 15:48Speaker 8: Could also just forget the birthday.
- 15:50Speaker 4: That was literally my worst moment. Now I can provide
- 15:53Speaker 4: some context to that. I was so sick and so pregnant,
- 15:56Speaker 4: and nobody knew and I sounded like a terrible human
- 15:59Speaker 4: being because I was like, oh no, now I forgot
- 16:02Speaker 4: Jess's birthday as well. Everyone's going to think I am
- 16:04Speaker 4: the devil. No birthdays are my favorite. I still carry
- 16:07Speaker 4: a lot of guilt about that.
- 16:08Speaker 9: Beck Oh, have a lifetime to make up for it,
- 16:12Speaker 9: She cried, No, I cried because I felt bad for
- 16:16Speaker 9: making you feel bad, not because not because you forgot
- 16:18Speaker 9: my best Did.
- 16:19Speaker 5: You cry though you cried?
- 16:20Speaker 4: I made you cry because I forgot your birthday.
- 16:24Speaker 8: It's a good way to frame it.
- 16:26Speaker 5: What else have you got?
- 16:26Speaker 2: Bet?
- 16:27Speaker 7: So The next one comes from Alex, who says, where possible,
- 16:30Speaker 7: try and enroll in some free courses or cheaper sort
- 16:33Speaker 7: of like tafe courses or college courses before committing to
- 16:37Speaker 7: a union degree because obviously, you know, it's like a big,
- 16:39Speaker 7: you know, expense, it's a big debt to have. We
- 16:41Speaker 7: don't want that ideally, and you could do this in
- 16:44Speaker 7: many ways. There was a thing where like a few
- 16:47Speaker 7: tafe courses were free.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Courses are now free. Yeah, and so Jess and I
- 16:51Speaker 4: tried to enroll in the Oslan tafe course, but we
- 16:55Speaker 4: couldn't like commit to it because it was in person only.
- 16:58Speaker 4: It was only a one or two places, like, it
- 17:00Speaker 4: wasn't as accessible as we would have liked, because obviously
- 17:03Speaker 4: we're crazy busy, but that's on our list of to
- 17:06Speaker 4: do things, and that one's free.
- 17:08Speaker 7: Yes, that's that's exactly right, So try and commit to
- 17:11Speaker 7: that way possible. You could even just jump on like
- 17:13Speaker 7: YouTube always have really cool the places where you can
- 17:16Speaker 7: explore like there's this one have you heard of dad?
- 17:19Speaker 7: How do I or how do I know it's the
- 17:23Speaker 7: guy that it's a dad?
- 17:25Speaker 5: Is it actually just you think? And I think it's
- 17:27Speaker 5: really cool.
- 17:28Speaker 7: That's like more so if you want to get into,
- 17:29Speaker 7: like you know, maybe different trades, like do some handy
- 17:32Speaker 7: work around your own house and stuff like that.
- 17:33Speaker 8: But just like exploring different things.
- 17:36Speaker 7: For committing to something that's such a big amount of
- 17:38Speaker 7: debt is probably you know something that you would.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Also you could upscale without having to like you know,
- 17:45Speaker 4: quit your job or take more time. There's a website
- 17:47Speaker 4: called called Sarah dot org oh which is one of
- 17:50Speaker 4: my favorite resources now that you've mentioned it, And it
- 17:53Speaker 4: actually has different units, so not full degrees, but different
- 17:57Speaker 4: units from universities all around the world. So we're talking
- 18:00Speaker 4: like Harvard and Oxford and like literally the big universities.
- 18:04Speaker 4: I know that r MIT here in Melbourne contribute and
- 18:07Speaker 4: so does Melbourne University and the University of New South Wales,
- 18:09Speaker 4: like literally all the big unis and you can go
- 18:12Speaker 4: do like a data science unit that could help you
- 18:15Speaker 4: upskill at work or like literally financial literacy units or
- 18:19Speaker 4: whatever you want to do, and you get a certificate
- 18:22Speaker 4: at the end, so you can pop that on your LinkedIn.
- 18:24Speaker 5: Isn't that cool?
- 18:25Speaker 2: That's great and free.
- 18:27Speaker 5: We love a free course.
- 18:28Speaker 4: I think the only thing that is paid about that
- 18:31Speaker 4: is obviously you could put on your LinkedIn that you've
- 18:33Speaker 4: done it. But I think you do have to pay
- 18:35Speaker 4: for the certificate if you want it sent to you.
- 18:37Speaker 5: Sure, I don't need the certificate. It's a good thanks
- 18:40Speaker 5: for the free course.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Yeah. I feel like if more people did that before
- 18:43Speaker 2: they started a university degree, the rate of people changing
- 18:47Speaker 2: courses would drop significantly because almost every single one of
- 18:51Speaker 2: my friends, as you guys know, I didn't go to university,
- 18:53Speaker 2: but I think every one of my friends but maybe
- 18:57Speaker 2: one that went to university changed courses and that costs
- 19:00Speaker 2: them a huge amount money because you feel so much
- 19:02Speaker 2: pressure to go to university when it might not even
- 19:05Speaker 2: be the right fit for you. Yeah, and you're making
- 19:07Speaker 2: a choice not really knowing what you like or what
- 19:09Speaker 2: you enjoy and totally so then people start studying and
- 19:12Speaker 2: they go, oh, actually, you know, it's what happened with
- 19:14Speaker 2: you'at Like you studied psychology and you're like, Oh, actually,
- 19:16Speaker 2: this isn't it and you moved into finance one hundred percent,
- 19:20Speaker 2: and I think it's so important to kind of I
- 19:22Speaker 2: don't know. I feel like this is a whole other
- 19:25Speaker 2: conversation outside of broke tips, just that there's so much
- 19:28Speaker 2: unnecessary pressure to get a higher education when honestly, so
- 19:32Speaker 2: many times you don't need it, Like it depends what
- 19:34Speaker 2: you want to do.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Obviously can get you ahead.
- 19:37Speaker 4: You obviously can't go and become a neurosurgeon if you
- 19:40Speaker 4: don't have a degree, Like that's not gonna fly. But like,
- 19:42Speaker 4: look at Jess's career. I think she's killing it. I
- 19:45Speaker 4: mean I'm biased because she works for me, but like
- 19:47Speaker 4: Jess never went to UNI and he's now the head
- 19:49Speaker 4: of partnerships, Like killing it.
- 19:52Speaker 8: Done very well, proud of you.
- 19:54Speaker 5: She's also a podcast SUPERSTARFF. So there's that.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Yeah, waty, what's your breake tip though?
- 20:00Speaker 5: Oh yes, yeah, we want to know yours.
- 20:01Speaker 7: Okay, So my broke tip this is for if you're
- 20:04Speaker 7: not wanting to spend any money and you have some
- 20:06Speaker 7: random bits and pieces in your house.
- 20:09Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly what I.
- 20:10Speaker 8: Think a lot of people relate.
- 20:11Speaker 7: Some people literally don't have anything, and that's you know,
- 20:13Speaker 7: it's not okay, but like that's a reality for some.
- 20:15Speaker 7: But if you have even a few dollars to grab
- 20:18Speaker 7: some really basic things from Woolworths or wherever, there's an
- 20:22Speaker 7: app or a website. One is super cook and one
- 20:26Speaker 7: is food Wise, I'm sure there are way more out
- 20:28Speaker 7: there where you can just basically jot in your ingredients,
- 20:31Speaker 7: random ingredients. So you have one cup of pasta and
- 20:35Speaker 7: some random tomato sauce and something else, and you're like,
- 20:37Speaker 7: I don't want to spend any money.
- 20:38Speaker 8: I'm just going to use what I have here. And
- 20:40Speaker 8: you chuck it all.
- 20:41Speaker 7: In there and you search for recipe. Yeah, and then
- 20:45Speaker 7: it'll like tell you what you can make with those ingredients.
- 20:48Speaker 8: So I love the hat.
- 20:49Speaker 7: Yeah, So you don't actually have to go out and
- 20:51Speaker 7: spend anything. And you know, sometimes you go out and
- 20:53Speaker 7: you have something in mind that you want to buy
- 20:55Speaker 7: and you end up buying like your hundredth bottle of
- 20:58Speaker 7: Cuman because you don't you forget that you have it
- 21:00Speaker 7: a home. Instead of doing that, you just you stay
- 21:03Speaker 7: at home, you look through cupboards, you chuck everything into
- 21:06Speaker 7: this website and it'll generate a recipe. For you and
- 21:10Speaker 7: you're saving on food waste. You're saving on food waste
- 21:13Speaker 7: exactly right.
- 21:14Speaker 2: So that's my one. That's a really good one, really
- 21:17Speaker 2: really good one.
- 21:18Speaker 8: Thank you, Thank you, Jazz. I feel so happy.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I love that.
- 21:21Speaker 7: Can I add to that please? You can steal herbs, Yes,
- 21:24Speaker 7: you can steal herbs.
- 21:26Speaker 4: I mean not from the supermarket that's actually illegal, oh Gosha,
- 21:30Speaker 4: I will uses cracking down on us, but literally from
- 21:33Speaker 4: neighbors and stuff. So keep your eyes peel because I
- 21:35Speaker 4: went on a big walk on the weekend and I
- 21:37Speaker 4: walked past probably the biggest rosemary bush I've seen in
- 21:39Speaker 4: my entire life.
- 21:40Speaker 5: And I was like, oh, this is good to know.
- 21:43Speaker 4: So coming up to Christmas, I actually this is a
- 21:45Speaker 4: bit lame, but like I have a rosemary salt recipe
- 21:49Speaker 4: that we might share with the community. Because you just
- 21:51Speaker 4: buy you know, those like really big bottles. I think
- 21:53Speaker 4: they're like a dollar of salt, like the table salt.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Like we're not talking fancy, like you know, Himalayan salt flakes.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Like we kin'd of thought that that's fine. Iodized yeah,
- 22:02Speaker 5: iodized salt.
- 22:04Speaker 4: We get some of that, We get some rosemary, We
- 22:05Speaker 4: dry out the rosemary we make rosemary salt that we
- 22:08Speaker 4: can give as gifts at Christmas.
- 22:11Speaker 5: So keep your.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Eyes peeled for the next couple of months for a
- 22:13Speaker 4: rosemary bush that you could maybe do a little snippy
- 22:16Speaker 4: snip off, snip, because that could become a really thoughtful,
- 22:21Speaker 4: heartfelt Christmas present that they could put on their steaks
- 22:24Speaker 4: or their dinners or literally anything you can talk with
- 22:26Speaker 4: it is so good. Yes, like literally rim your little
- 22:32Speaker 4: margarita glass with some rosemary salt. Kiss, she's festive. Just
- 22:36Speaker 4: don't trespass, Sorry, no, don't trespass. Only if it's like
- 22:40Speaker 4: in a public garden or someone's front yard.
- 22:42Speaker 8: Poking out the fence. It's yours.
- 22:43Speaker 4: It's all yours, somewhere nature street picon exactly.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Just over and at home listening knows this means that
- 22:51Speaker 2: Christmas content is You were the first one.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Jessica is coeen of Christmas, and we have been brainstorming
- 23:03Speaker 4: all year of like gift ideas that you can make
- 23:06Speaker 4: that might be really cheap.
- 23:07Speaker 5: So Jess and I have been hoarding this. Jess has
- 23:09Speaker 5: wanted who for a very long time, learn how to
- 23:12Speaker 5: use a sewing machine, and I've been promising to teach
- 23:14Speaker 5: her how to use mine, but have been putting it
- 23:17Speaker 5: off because this year we're gonna make wheat bags. How
- 23:21Speaker 5: we bags.
- 23:21Speaker 8: That's so cute.
- 23:22Speaker 5: I love a good wheat bag.
- 23:24Speaker 4: And with some cheap material from like the opshop or something,
- 23:27Speaker 4: and some wheat that you get at the pet store
- 23:30Speaker 4: for like ten dollars for a ten kilo bag, you
- 23:32Speaker 4: can make a heap of wheat PAGs as presents. I'm
- 23:35Speaker 4: going to teach Jess how to do that. We've also
- 23:36Speaker 4: got a number of different recipes like the rosemary salt
- 23:39Speaker 4: I just mentioned, and a few other really fun things
- 23:42Speaker 4: that are really cheap but really thoughtful that you could
- 23:44Speaker 4: do for Christmas because I just feel like Christmas is
- 23:46Speaker 4: so expensive and it gives me so much anxiety. And
- 23:48Speaker 4: I know I'm not the only one that'll be some
- 23:52Speaker 4: really good but we're going to get crafty. We're gonna
- 23:53Speaker 4: get crafty.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Yes, I like festa, I love yeah festive broke tips.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Also on that before we move on and go to
- 24:00Speaker 4: a break, I mentioned that we're going to do wheat packs,
- 24:03Speaker 4: So keep your eyes peeled for some lavender bushes you
- 24:05Speaker 4: could borrow some stems from.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Yes, and if you have a broke tip that you
- 24:09Speaker 2: want to share with back send it through to her
- 24:11Speaker 2: or to the Shes and the Money Instagram because we
- 24:13Speaker 2: love sharing yours as well as backsone we love.
- 24:16Speaker 5: We might do a shout out on the Instagram stories
- 24:19Speaker 5: today so that we can collect some more brogue tips
- 24:21Speaker 5: to share as well. Theck what do you reckon?
- 24:23Speaker 2: Oh?
- 24:23Speaker 8: Would love that? That'd be nice.
- 24:24Speaker 5: Ah, they're my favorite.
- 24:25Speaker 4: All right, let's go to a really quick break and
- 24:27Speaker 4: on the flip side, we're going to be talking about
- 24:29Speaker 4: how will work credit card might impact your credit score
- 24:33Speaker 4: and we're going to be unpacking something you slid into
- 24:34Speaker 4: our DMS about.
- 24:35Speaker 5: This week, we're chatting.
- 24:36Speaker 4: About being financially taken advantage of in a new relationship.
- 24:40Speaker 5: So guys, don't go anywhere.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Welcome back, everybody. Let's listen to this sweets money dilemma.

- 25:10Speaker 5: Now, let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 25:15Speaker 6: Hi, she's on the money. I'm currently saving for a house,
- 25:18Speaker 6: but I've also reached a position at work where I
- 25:20Speaker 6: can have a work credit card. Having a work credit
- 25:23Speaker 6: card will make things a lot easier for me. But
- 25:25Speaker 6: I can't help but wonder how having this in my
- 25:27Speaker 6: name will impact me? Will it impact my borrowing power
- 25:30Speaker 6: or ability to have my own credit card one day?
- 25:33Speaker 6: And what happens if my workplace doesn't make a payment
- 25:36Speaker 6: on time. I'd love if you could help me with
- 25:38Speaker 6: this or guide me to a place where I can
- 25:40Speaker 6: find this information. Thank you.
- 25:42Speaker 2: All I can say is, as the person who used
- 25:44Speaker 2: to have to reconcile credit cards for a team of
- 25:46Speaker 2: over fifteen people, don't be the person who doesn't keep
- 25:50Speaker 2: track of their receipts. Keep your receipts, please, for the
- 25:52Speaker 2: love of God, for whoever's doing that admin ha ha.
- 25:56Speaker 2: I can't tell you how many times I'd be hey
- 25:58Speaker 2: back if you gore your receipts and that person would
- 25:59Speaker 2: be like, I'm just missing his life. Got maybe four
- 26:03Speaker 2: of them, and I'm like, you have sixteen charges for
- 26:05Speaker 2: oh no, keep tracking your receipts.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Please, sorry at Daxed on my own podcast. That's why
- 26:15Speaker 5: I beck. I don't know if you've noticed it.
- 26:16Speaker 4: Anytime we ever go out for lunch or something and
- 26:18Speaker 4: I like tap my card, they're like, do you want
- 26:20Speaker 4: a receipt? And I'm like, no, Jess or that yell
- 26:22Speaker 4: over my shoulder yes, and then she'll like snatch it,
- 26:26Speaker 4: take it away because she's just like so sick.
- 26:28Speaker 5: Of my shit. She's just like, how do you never remember?
- 26:31Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, I just forget. I'm so sorry, Like
- 26:33Speaker 5: I don't want the receipt, I don't need it, and
- 26:34Speaker 5: she's like, it's a work expense. We've been doing this
- 26:36Speaker 5: for years, so I just stop it.
- 26:38Speaker 4: But let's get back to it. So, ultimately, it depends
- 26:42Speaker 4: on the structure. You need to be very clear on
- 26:45Speaker 4: who the corporate credit holder is. So in this circumstance,
- 26:50Speaker 4: best example is my girls at work, because Jess obviously
- 26:53Speaker 4: does a lot of stuff that needs to be paid for,
- 26:55Speaker 4: they have credit cards. Those credit cards have their names
- 26:58Speaker 4: on them, but the corporate credit card holder is me.
- 27:03Speaker 4: It will never be Jess's responsibility to pay off that debt.
- 27:07Speaker 5: It is not in her name.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Yes, she authorized the payment, but I am the primary
- 27:12Speaker 4: card holder and she is the secondary card holder. So essentially,
- 27:17Speaker 4: don't do this, Jessica. She could rack up as much
- 27:19Speaker 4: as she wanted and it's my responsibility. It doesn't actually
- 27:22Speaker 4: impact her credit score. It will impact my credit score
- 27:25Speaker 4: if I don't pay it off, or my business's credit score.
- 27:28Speaker 4: So it's really important to understand the structure of a
- 27:30Speaker 4: credit card. If your employer goes, hey, Jessica, you need
- 27:35Speaker 4: a credit card to work here to do you know payments?
- 27:39Speaker 5: Can you go get one?
- 27:40Speaker 2: Nah?
- 27:41Speaker 5: No, I can't.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Red flag.
- 27:42Speaker 4: Red flag absolutely not because for me, that should never
- 27:45Speaker 4: be in Jess's name, because it is not her responsibility.
- 27:48Speaker 4: I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about reimbursements
- 27:51Speaker 4: as well, like jess can probably talk you through how
- 27:54Speaker 4: I feel about that, but I do not like it
- 27:57Speaker 4: when my team has to be financial out for an
- 28:01Speaker 4: expense that is for my business that is not on
- 28:03Speaker 4: jess like. And I find that so wild because I
- 28:07Speaker 4: used to work in consulting and I used to travel
- 28:09Speaker 4: a lot for my culture and engagement work, right, and
- 28:12Speaker 4: it used to drive me bonkers that I would have
- 28:15Speaker 4: to have a credit card for work to put a
- 28:17Speaker 4: hold on the hotel room that I was staying in,
- 28:20Speaker 4: and I mean I always got it back. But like
- 28:23Speaker 4: as you guys know a little bit about my money stories,
- 28:25Speaker 4: I was in lots of debt. Money was scary, money
- 28:28Speaker 4: was overwhelming. I didn't have that much of it. And
- 28:31Speaker 4: for a credit card company to put one hundred dollar
- 28:33Speaker 4: or two hundred dollars hold on my credit card, that
- 28:35Speaker 4: mean I couldn't use it because I didn't actually have
- 28:37Speaker 4: any more space on it. Yeah, I'd always make sure
- 28:39Speaker 4: that I had enough space on it so that I
- 28:41Speaker 4: could work, but that should not have been my responsibility.
- 28:44Speaker 4: It should have been at my employer's responsibility to give
- 28:47Speaker 4: me a work credit card so that I could function
- 28:49Speaker 4: and work for the business, because that wasn't an.
- 28:51Speaker 5: Expense that I had.
- 28:52Speaker 4: I also used to have to keep track of all
- 28:54Speaker 4: my meals and then submit my receipts to get paid
- 28:57Speaker 4: back for them.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, which particularly because most companies reconcile monthly, like
- 29:03Speaker 2: I was doing those credit cards that I was talking about,
- 29:05Speaker 2: like on a monthly basis, that means for a full
- 29:07Speaker 2: thirty ish days, you're without those funds. You're not occurring
- 29:11Speaker 2: interest on those funds, Like that's a long time.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Exactly, the money that I've made is no longer making
- 29:15Speaker 4: money because it's not setting in a high interest savings
- 29:17Speaker 4: account or in my investment or whatever. And that's actually
- 29:20Speaker 4: an opportunity cost that you're missing out on. And I
- 29:23Speaker 4: don't think that's good enough. But also, if Jess has
- 29:26Speaker 4: to travel for work, is it just this responsibility to
- 29:28Speaker 4: pay for the room.
- 29:29Speaker 2: I would say arguably not, but I have I have
- 29:32Speaker 2: a very good no.
- 29:33Speaker 4: But also it's a simple structure because at the end
- 29:36Speaker 4: of the day, if your business is saying, oh, will
- 29:39Speaker 4: reimburse you, they're saying they've got the money for it
- 29:41Speaker 4: to begin with.
- 29:41Speaker 5: Just change your structure. It doesn't cost you anymore.
- 29:44Speaker 4: In fact, Jess having a credit card makes me points,
- 29:49Speaker 4: so like I get points on all of the transactions
- 29:51Speaker 4: and Jess doesn't. Whereas if Jess was using her personal card,
- 29:55Speaker 4: which she might want you because she's obsessed with bloody
- 29:57Speaker 4: velocity points. I swear to God, she waits until she
- 30:01Speaker 4: can get the most amount of velocity off frequent flyer points.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Like this woman is crazy like flybys in her two peas.
- 30:07Speaker 2: In a pod.
- 30:08Speaker 5: Best is yeah, like I can't like she wants the points. No, no, no,
- 30:12Speaker 5: they're for me.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Sorry, yeah, okay, sorry, Yeah, but I think yeah, I
- 30:17Speaker 4: guess back to the question, you need to understand the structure. Obviously,
- 30:21Speaker 4: If your employe is asking you to get a credit
- 30:23Speaker 4: card in your name to pay for that, I think
- 30:25Speaker 4: that's a red flag and you should say no, actually,
- 30:27Speaker 4: can you please make me an authorized card holder on
- 30:30Speaker 4: one of the business accounts because it's actually not your responsibility. Yeah, great, great, great,
- 30:36Speaker 4: not your responsibility and not your responsibility. No, absolutely no.
- 30:41Speaker 4: If no, she didn't give us enough context. So that's
- 30:44Speaker 4: why I'm saying there's probably two different structures. And I
- 30:47Speaker 4: mean lots of businesses operate on the reimbursement model, and
- 30:50Speaker 4: I mean I don't want to throw too many under
- 30:52Speaker 4: a bus. Yes, I don't think it is technically too fair,
- 30:55Speaker 4: but it's also a trust thing. Like a business might
- 30:58Speaker 4: not be that comfortable issuing Jess with a credit card
- 31:00Speaker 4: because she could wrap up a heap of debt.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Yeah, especially you're a brand new employe.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're a brand new employee you haven't passed
- 31:06Speaker 4: like probation or something, they might go, oh, you have
- 31:08Speaker 4: trouble for work will reimburse you, and that's their way
- 31:10Speaker 4: of making sure that you're not taking the mickey out
- 31:13Speaker 4: of a work credit card and like protecting themselves and
- 31:16Speaker 4: like covering their own risks. So it's a bit of
- 31:18Speaker 4: a double edged sword because you can see where it's
- 31:20Speaker 4: coming from.
- 31:21Speaker 8: But from my.
- 31:22Speaker 4: Perspective, why are you hiring people you don't trust? Weird flexwit?
- 31:25Speaker 2: Okay?
- 31:26Speaker 7: True?
- 31:27Speaker 2: Also, about five minutes ago, I would just like to
- 31:28Speaker 2: clarify you said, nah can't.
- 31:31Speaker 8: I heard the same thing just for.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Anyone listening at homegoing Victoria Divide. You said, nah can't.
- 31:39Speaker 2: But just you're in a bit of a you're in
- 31:41Speaker 2: a bit of a flow and oh my.
- 31:43Speaker 5: God, my parents don't listen to this podcast. Don't get cancels.
- 31:48Speaker 2: We're marking it as a clean podcast.
- 31:51Speaker 1: A n y.
- 31:55Speaker 5: Alky.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Well, I guess it's time to move on to our
- 31:58Speaker 4: community d m P. This week we had a brilliant
- 32:02Speaker 4: community call out. We received a DM and it sounded
- 32:05Speaker 4: a lot like this because I'm reading it for Betam
- 32:08Speaker 4: so it said I need some advice.
- 32:10Speaker 5: Girls.
- 32:10Speaker 4: My mum has started dating a new partner after years
- 32:13Speaker 4: of being single. Get it, mum, she seems really happy,
- 32:17Speaker 4: but is totally naive to the fact that this person
- 32:20Speaker 4: is taking advantage of her and her money. They have
- 32:23Speaker 4: been in a relationship for about eight months and the
- 32:25Speaker 4: partner has already moved in with her. Her partner does
- 32:28Speaker 4: not contribute any rent, nor paid bills or groceries. They
- 32:31Speaker 4: have gone on holidays and Mom has paid for the
- 32:34Speaker 4: entire thing, and she always pays for their dinners out.
- 32:37Speaker 4: This person has a full time job, so I don't
- 32:40Speaker 4: see why they can't contribute equally to this relationship.
- 32:43Speaker 5: I think she's blinded by her new found happiness.
- 32:45Speaker 4: And companionship, and I'm really worried she's putting herself in
- 32:49Speaker 4: a bad financial situation, as it's not sustainable to her
- 32:53Speaker 4: to support both of them. I don't want to hurt
- 32:55Speaker 4: her feelings, but I feel like I need to say something.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Do you have any advice on how I could navigate
- 33:01Speaker 4: this conversation?
- 33:04Speaker 2: So tricky?
- 33:04Speaker 5: This is very tricky, so spicy.
- 33:08Speaker 2: It's hard because to me, there's kind of two elements
- 33:12Speaker 2: to this, like if it was your friend, if it
- 33:14Speaker 2: was your mum, if it was someone, if it's anyone
- 33:16Speaker 2: you know, I think, and you care about them, you
- 33:19Speaker 2: want to flag these things with them, and you want
- 33:21Speaker 2: to in this situation definitely, I think go about it
- 33:23Speaker 2: in a kind and gentle way. The other side of
- 33:27Speaker 2: it is, you also can't tell somebody how to spend
- 33:30Speaker 2: their money or how to live their life, and what
- 33:32Speaker 2: from the external might look like someone being taken advantage
- 33:36Speaker 2: of if they're aware of these expenses, if they're conscious
- 33:40Speaker 2: of them, there is also the possibility that they are
- 33:42Speaker 2: happy with that arrangement. And I think like it's the
- 33:45Speaker 2: daughter's job to say, hey, like, have you thought about
- 33:48Speaker 2: the implications of this, what's the plan long term? Have
- 33:51Speaker 2: you given it any consideration? Because I just want to
- 33:54Speaker 2: make sure that you're going to be okay and that
- 33:57Speaker 2: you know things are somewhat equitable or equal. But then
- 34:01Speaker 2: at the same time, for example, if the mum earns
- 34:04Speaker 2: heaps more than the partner, maybe she is going, oh, well,
- 34:07Speaker 2: I'm really happy to pay for these things because I
- 34:10Speaker 2: like these certain things. I've become accustomed to this lifestyle
- 34:13Speaker 2: as a previously independent woman. So it's kind of like,
- 34:16Speaker 2: I think you should absolutely have a conversation because I
- 34:18Speaker 2: think in any circumstance like this, you're better off flagging
- 34:22Speaker 2: a potential risk than not, because you would hate to
- 34:25Speaker 2: not flag it and then have it go badly. I
- 34:27Speaker 2: think if you love someone, you should always be comfortable
- 34:30Speaker 2: bringing these things up, and I think that needs to
- 34:32Speaker 2: be done gently and with kindness and in a way
- 34:35Speaker 2: that is supportive, not aggressive or you know, a bit
- 34:38Speaker 2: like what are you doing or anything like that. I
- 34:40Speaker 2: don't think that's well.
- 34:41Speaker 4: I think we need a bit more context around the relationship,
- 34:43Speaker 4: because do you have like beef with this dude that's
- 34:46Speaker 4: come in like already, like you're already talking to Mum
- 34:49Speaker 4: being like I don't really like him, he takes advantage
- 34:51Speaker 4: of you, but you haven't really mentioned the financial part,
- 34:54Speaker 4: and then this is like another layer if so it
- 34:56Speaker 4: needs a bit more of a balanced conversation, or is
- 34:58Speaker 4: this something where you're like, oh, here's a really great guy,
- 35:00Speaker 4: but also Mum by the way. So I think it's
- 35:03Speaker 4: there's a bit more context that needs to play into it.
- 35:06Speaker 4: But as you said, Jess, I think if you're in
- 35:07Speaker 4: a circumstance where you love and trust someone, I would
- 35:10Speaker 4: always bring it up. I'm the type of person that
- 35:12Speaker 4: I'd prefer you to be mad at me for me
- 35:15Speaker 4: caring about your well being like if I thought Jess
- 35:18Speaker 4: was in a situation that I didn't like. I know,
- 35:20Speaker 4: Jess is probably not going to like me bringing it up,
- 35:22Speaker 4: but I'd be like, hey, I just feel like X
- 35:25Speaker 4: y Z, and same with you, Beck, Like I would
- 35:27Speaker 4: bring it up even if it made you a little
- 35:29Speaker 4: bit mad at me, because I would prefer to be
- 35:32Speaker 4: in a circumstance where you're mad at me, but you're
- 35:34Speaker 4: safe and you're happy and you're being respected. And I
- 35:37Speaker 4: think that that's where it comes from, because that's how
- 35:40Speaker 4: I would frame it. I'd be like, hey, Beck, I
- 35:41Speaker 4: know you could think that I'm really overstepping here and
- 35:44Speaker 4: it's totally none of my business, but I can't get
- 35:47Speaker 4: it off my mind. Here are my thoughts and feelings.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Do what you wish with them, and I think that
- 35:51Speaker 4: that's it. But not everybody is like that. Yeah, I
- 35:55Speaker 4: think it's a hard situation to navigate.
- 35:58Speaker 5: What would you do?
- 35:58Speaker 8: But it is a hard one.
- 35:59Speaker 7: Actually, I think I want to be a sugar daddy,
- 36:01Speaker 7: So this is a situation where but so it might
- 36:03Speaker 7: be this situation where someone wants to be you know,
- 36:05Speaker 7: financially submissive or whatever the term is. They could be
- 36:08Speaker 7: that exactly what you're saying. Yes, maybe not exactly what
- 36:11Speaker 7: kind of Maybe it's king we don't want to yuck
- 36:13Speaker 7: anyone's yam. It could be that situation. But also, and
- 36:16Speaker 7: this kind of comes from I listened to the podcast
- 36:18Speaker 7: Something Was Wrong. They talk about a lot about like
- 36:20Speaker 7: abusive relationships and sometimes financially situationally like it's my favorite podcast,
- 36:27Speaker 7: and so I guess, like, I mean, sorry, other than
- 36:29Speaker 7: this one, Nope, that this is extremely awkward.
- 36:34Speaker 8: I'm so sorry.
- 36:35Speaker 7: But obviously without saying but no, but they do talk
- 36:42Speaker 7: about this kind of thing, and I guess like, so
- 36:43Speaker 7: this is more not really financial advice, This is more
- 36:46Speaker 7: just like emotional and relationship advice.
- 36:48Speaker 8: So exactly as you guys are saying, definitely, you know,
- 36:50Speaker 8: bring it up.
- 36:51Speaker 7: But as long as the person, as long as your
- 36:53Speaker 7: mum in this situation knows that you will always be
- 36:57Speaker 7: there no matter what happens, and if and if she
- 37:00Speaker 7: is staying with this person, if she is in a
- 37:03Speaker 7: bad situation, if she stays with this person for many
- 37:06Speaker 7: many years, you will consistently, always forever be there as
- 37:10Speaker 7: the safety blanket. Also, you know, when you're dating someone
- 37:13Speaker 7: and there are some little red flags that you don't
- 37:16Speaker 7: start telling your friends about because you don't want them
- 37:18Speaker 7: to dislike your partner. Yeah, so opening that communication and
- 37:22Speaker 7: being like, hey, you're allowed event here and I'm not
- 37:25Speaker 7: going to dislike your partner. Let's just talk about this
- 37:28Speaker 7: person like their maybe have no chill, but let's let's
- 37:33Speaker 7: remain completely indifferent about like who the person is and
- 37:36Speaker 7: all this kind of thing. Just just be I agree
- 37:39Speaker 7: as like, put you know, as little pressure on them
- 37:42Speaker 7: as possible, and just be consistent and be kind and
- 37:44Speaker 7: exactly saying patient and open and hopefully they'll I mean,
- 37:49Speaker 7: they have to find their own way. If this is
- 37:52Speaker 7: a problem, they'll have to find their own way out.
- 37:53Speaker 7: They won't listen to anyone unfortunately most likely just being
- 37:57Speaker 7: there for every step, and I think.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Or sprinkling in some resources where relevant, like oh, like
- 38:03Speaker 2: I listened to this really great podcast that talks about
- 38:06Speaker 2: you know, financial money and relationships in the different ways
- 38:09Speaker 2: that you can handle that. Or I saw this really
- 38:11Speaker 2: great article that somebody wrote about equity and this and that,
- 38:14Speaker 2: or just I think checking in, like don't have the
- 38:19Speaker 2: conversation once and then be done with it. I think
- 38:22Speaker 2: if you're worried, people also do have gut instincts where
- 38:26Speaker 2: protective of the people that we love. Monitor the situation
- 38:29Speaker 2: from a little bit of a distance and just keep
- 38:31Speaker 2: an eye on it, and keep an eye out for
- 38:32Speaker 2: any additional red flag, and don't be afraid to just
- 38:35Speaker 2: check back in and be like, how are things going?
- 38:36Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, Like I've read this thing and it
- 38:39Speaker 2: made me think about you guys, or I just wanted
- 38:41Speaker 2: to see how you were going with everything, because I
- 38:44Speaker 2: think as well as you were saying, like, if it
- 38:46Speaker 2: is a negative thing, if this is a potentially abusive
- 38:50Speaker 2: relationship or a relationship where someone is being taken advantage of,
- 38:53Speaker 2: it will potentially get worse over time. It might take
- 38:56Speaker 2: them a while to find out how they feel, and
- 38:59Speaker 2: maybe that's when they'll need help them. In those types
- 39:01Speaker 2: of relationships, often the thing that the abuser does is
- 39:05Speaker 2: cut off your ties to people. So yes, don't let
- 39:07Speaker 2: them do that to you. But at the same time,
- 39:10Speaker 2: as I said, that's not necessarily the case, Like it's
- 39:12Speaker 2: really hard to know without observing what side of the
- 39:15Speaker 2: table this falls on, and so I think it's for
- 39:18Speaker 2: our listener just about having the conversation and as you said,
- 39:22Speaker 2: reminding their mum that they're there and just keeping an
- 39:25Speaker 2: eye on things the best you can, because also you're
- 39:27Speaker 2: the child in a situation. There's only so much that
- 39:30Speaker 2: you can do to parent your parent, you know what
- 39:32Speaker 2: I mean totally.
- 39:33Speaker 5: You said it really well before.
- 39:36Speaker 4: You're not privy to the relationship, like and that's just it,
- 39:39Speaker 4: Like you might see it as an outsider, but like
- 39:42Speaker 4: Beck and I have this relationship and we've actually talked
- 39:44Speaker 4: about it and I'm really comfy with it, and you
- 39:46Speaker 4: just don't know that because to be honest, it's none
- 39:48Speaker 4: of your business in a way, like why would your
- 39:50Speaker 4: mum announce that? But I think the important thing here
- 39:53Speaker 4: for me is really around the expectation, Like is that
- 39:56Speaker 4: person expecting your mum to cough up every single time?
- 40:00Speaker 4: Or has that been a pre I guess meditated conversation.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Is that something where she's like, look, I know that
- 40:05Speaker 4: you're saving or you're doing this, or you're doing that,
- 40:07Speaker 4: and i'd love to pay more because I am actually
- 40:10Speaker 4: super wealthy. Like if that's the case, then great, But
- 40:13Speaker 4: I think it's about that expectation. Is he grateful for
- 40:16Speaker 4: the contributions that your mum is making or is he
- 40:19Speaker 4: just expecting it? Because I think that's really a reflective
- 40:21Speaker 4: of the dynamic that the relationship has. And I think, yeah,
- 40:25Speaker 4: people only hear what they want to hear when they
- 40:27Speaker 4: want to hear it. So even if you say something
- 40:29Speaker 4: to your mum now, don't be surprised if she doesn't
- 40:32Speaker 4: want to take that advice or hear it. And then
- 40:34Speaker 4: in a couple of months when maybe the relationship disintegrates,
- 40:37Speaker 4: if it does, like you know, I'm obviously extrapolating that out,
- 40:41Speaker 4: don't go I told you so. If she comes to
- 40:44Speaker 4: you as a safe place to be like, oh my gosh,
- 40:46Speaker 4: I can't believe he Xyz, don't go, oh well, I
- 40:48Speaker 4: told you so. Like that's so unhelpful because sometimes people
- 40:52Speaker 4: literally only hear what they want to hear when they
- 40:54Speaker 4: want to hear it.
- 40:55Speaker 5: And that's okay if it didn't come from you. So
- 40:58Speaker 5: we obviously asked the community.
- 40:59Speaker 4: We said, do do you know someone who has had
- 41:02Speaker 4: a partner that was quote dating them for the money.
- 41:04Speaker 5: I thought this wouldn't be many, but forty four percent
- 41:07Speaker 5: of you said.
- 41:07Speaker 4: Yes, Oh my god, that's a lot wild. We said,
- 41:11Speaker 4: if yes, were they aware that this was happening? Ninety
- 41:15Speaker 4: three percent of you said they were totally naive to
- 41:18Speaker 4: what was happening.
- 41:19Speaker 2: That makes sense to me, It makes sense.
- 41:21Speaker 4: But that's probably why our community DM writer in ra
- 41:24Speaker 4: is like, do I say something, yes, in this circumstance, if.
- 41:29Speaker 5: It was your mum, what would you do?
- 41:32Speaker 4: Ninety five percent of you said I'd raise my concerns
- 41:35Speaker 4: with her as soon as possible. And then we asked
- 41:39Speaker 4: for your two cents, which is my favorite because I
- 41:41Speaker 4: love your opinions. They are so colorful sometimes and I'm
- 41:45Speaker 4: always like, wow, I didn't even think of that. So
- 41:47Speaker 4: there's been a few really great responses. First one I
- 41:49Speaker 4: want to read out was I was the person being
- 41:51Speaker 4: taken advantage of. I was completely blinded by love, and
- 41:54Speaker 4: I wish someone had said something. Yeah, someone else said,
- 41:58Speaker 4: how did she know this guy isn't paying for stuff
- 42:00Speaker 4: when she's not there? Is he maybe just transferring money
- 42:03Speaker 4: after it and you're just seeing the credit card transaction
- 42:06Speaker 4: take place?
- 42:06Speaker 1: You know?
- 42:07Speaker 2: Sure? So that's smart. That's a good, very good point.
- 42:09Speaker 4: That's smart because like I remember when I was dating
- 42:11Speaker 4: my husband at the very start, like he would just
- 42:14Speaker 4: transfer me and I would just transfer him, and like
- 42:17Speaker 4: then it got to a point where we weren't transferring
- 42:19Speaker 4: each other. I was just like, Oh, just get the
- 42:20Speaker 4: next one, right, ran. That's kind of like how the
- 42:22Speaker 4: relationship progressed. But if you know, Jess, you came out
- 42:25Speaker 4: with me. Right, Let's pretend I took you out on
- 42:28Speaker 4: a third Wheel weird date and Steve I would pay
- 42:31Speaker 4: for you both because you're my friend, if that makes sense.
- 42:34Speaker 4: So like your experience might be that I pay all
- 42:36Speaker 4: the time, But why would Steve pay for you if
- 42:39Speaker 4: you were invited by me?
- 42:40Speaker 2: If you or my mom, that makes way more sense.
- 42:42Speaker 2: It's like an example too in the context of this thing.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 42:46Speaker 4: That's where I was like, hold up, hold up, Maybe
- 42:48Speaker 4: you're only seeing that because whenever you're out for dinner,
- 42:52Speaker 4: she pays because it's.
- 42:54Speaker 5: Two to one, right, all right.
- 42:56Speaker 4: Someone said someone needs to send her that she's on
- 42:59Speaker 4: the Money podcast. Oh bless I agree, thank you, thank you,
- 43:02Speaker 4: not to beck though it's not her favorite.
- 43:06Speaker 6: Of it.
- 43:07Speaker 4: Someone said, this is a really big red flag. I
- 43:09Speaker 4: was in this circumstance and it turned into financial abuse.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Someone said, please say something from a place of love,
- 43:15Speaker 4: and then whatever happens is they're not on her from
- 43:18Speaker 4: then on in. Someone said sisters before misters, tell her
- 43:23Speaker 4: how you see it, and then give her a chance
- 43:25Speaker 4: to reflect someone else has said, so the rearing. I
- 43:29Speaker 4: guess outcome here is please communicate, someone said, communicate your
- 43:34Speaker 4: concerns and ask how their new partner is actually contributing
- 43:37Speaker 4: financially or contributing at all.
- 43:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:40Speaker 2: I was going to say that before actually, when you
- 43:42Speaker 2: were talking about not seeing the things that they're doing, Like,
- 43:44Speaker 2: what if it is one of those relationships where perhaps
- 43:47Speaker 2: if someone who's better off, they contribute in other ways,
- 43:49Speaker 2: because there are other ways you can contribute to relationship
- 43:51Speaker 2: that aren't necessarily financial.
- 43:53Speaker 5: Yeah, it's very very true. I've got one more and
- 43:55Speaker 5: I like this thought pattern.
- 43:57Speaker 4: Ask your mom for some advice about your quote friend
- 44:00Speaker 4: who happens to be in this situation and see what
- 44:02Speaker 4: she says.
- 44:03Speaker 8: Cool, very good idea, and be like, oh boom, mum.
- 44:07Speaker 5: It's actually you, You're the friend. I kind of like that.
- 44:12Speaker 4: It's it also takes a little bit of the aggressiveness
- 44:16Speaker 4: of the conversation away.
- 44:18Speaker 5: Yes, talk about Beck, Yeah, talk about Victoria, talk about Jess.
- 44:21Speaker 5: Your friend Victoria has this issue, what do you do?
- 44:24Speaker 4: And then maybe it might prompt a conversation about her situation,
- 44:29Speaker 4: or maybe you'll leave it for a week or two
- 44:31Speaker 4: and then you'll go back and be like, hey, mum,
- 44:32Speaker 4: I was just reflecting on that talk to my friend
- 44:34Speaker 4: and it just reminded me of your circumstances. You're okay, Yeah,
- 44:37Speaker 4: And then at least she's had a seed planted, and
- 44:39Speaker 4: that could be a really great place to start, because honestly,
- 44:43Speaker 4: no one likes being blindsided by harsh conversations. And I've
- 44:47Speaker 4: said this a million times on the podcast, like, if
- 44:49Speaker 4: I need to have a hard conversation with my partner,
- 44:52Speaker 4: I will message him or tell him that that conversation
- 44:55Speaker 4: is coming up so he can prep. Or if there's
- 44:57Speaker 4: a really big decision that we need to make, I
- 45:00Speaker 4: think it's unfair if in my head I'm like, all right, well,
- 45:02Speaker 4: we need to make this really big decision, and I
- 45:04Speaker 4: spend a whole heap of time, energy and effort researching
- 45:07Speaker 4: it and understanding it, and then I go to Steve
- 45:09Speaker 4: and go, hey, by the way, we need you xyz,
- 45:11Speaker 4: and this is the outcome. He hasn't had that prep time.
- 45:14Speaker 5: That's not fair.
- 45:16Speaker 4: So maybe you know, planting the seed is a good thing,
- 45:18Speaker 4: YEA many additional things before we run away my friends.
- 45:22Speaker 8: No, I don't think so.
- 45:24Speaker 5: I love it all right. Well, this has been a
- 45:25Speaker 5: good EP.
