- 0:00Speaker 1: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to another episode of She's on the
- 0:22Speaker 2: Money's Money Diaries, the money diary from millennials who want
- 0:26Speaker 2: to be a little bit more pervy. So this week
- 0:29Speaker 2: we are talking to a dead free side hustler and
- 0:33Speaker 2: Ryan and I HAPPI literally just finished the interview with her,
- 0:36Speaker 2: and I could not be more inspired by her story,
- 0:39Speaker 2: and I'm sure the same is going to be true
- 0:40Speaker 2: for you now. When she sent through an email to
- 0:43Speaker 2: be on the show, she actually sent what I would
- 0:46Speaker 2: call a minor thesis.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Well she called it an essay.
- 0:49Speaker 2: She called it an essay. It was very, very long.
- 0:51Speaker 2: So instead of getting Ryan to read that out for
- 0:54Speaker 2: you this week, we are just going to jump straight
- 0:56Speaker 2: into an interview and get her to explain her story
- 0:59Speaker 2: in her words for you. So let's jump straight in. Friends,
- 1:02Speaker 2: I know this is a goodie.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Do you want to describe your family's attitude to money
- 1:08Speaker 4: and what you learned about money growing up?
- 1:10Speaker 5: Money was never a topic growing up. I just knew
- 1:16Speaker 5: we never had much money. I know when I was younger.
- 1:21Speaker 5: I'm the oldest, so when I was younger, I know
- 1:25Speaker 5: we had like a lot of money issues, and I
- 1:27Speaker 5: just remember that from like occasionally we had to get
- 1:30Speaker 5: food boxes from like the Selbos or you know that
- 1:33Speaker 5: sort of stuff, the Red Cross whatever it is. And yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 5: my parents were like never great with money. They never
- 1:43Speaker 5: talked about it. But essentially I just had no money education.
- 1:47Speaker 5: I just knew we didn't have much money, and I
- 1:49Speaker 5: had no idea about money.
- 1:52Speaker 4: So with that background, if we fast forward a few
- 1:55Speaker 4: years to the point where I believe your partner lost
- 1:58Speaker 4: his job and all of a sudden, you guys end
- 2:00Speaker 4: up in a whole bunch of debt.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Tell me about where you were.
- 2:04Speaker 6: Oh, it was extremely stressful.
- 2:09Speaker 5: We were fairly new into a relationship, and it was
- 2:13Speaker 5: extremely daunting having to take on that stress of obviously
- 2:19Speaker 5: my partner losing his job and then him having to
- 2:22Speaker 5: sell his apartment because he couldn't cover the mortgage anymore.
- 2:26Speaker 5: I was also severely in debt myself for very stupid reasons.
- 2:33Speaker 3: And how old are you at this stage?
- 2:35Speaker 5: Back then, I was like twenty one two. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:41Speaker 5: my partner is a couple of years older. But it
- 2:45Speaker 5: was there was about three or four years there that
- 2:50Speaker 5: were like extremely stressful with money, and all we did
- 2:53Speaker 5: was argue about money, and it was a really hard time.
- 2:57Speaker 4: So yeah, so we know now that you found you know,
- 3:01Speaker 4: the debt free community and you've really changed you around.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Can you remember this one moment where you thought that's it,
- 3:08Speaker 4: I'm going to go pick up a book, or I'm done,
- 3:10Speaker 4: or I needed. Something's got to give, something's got to change.
- 3:13Speaker 4: What was the yeah, that final straw?
- 3:15Speaker 3: I guess.
- 3:16Speaker 5: I think I was in quite a positive headspace with
- 3:19Speaker 5: money for a little while, like in terms of wanting
- 3:23Speaker 5: to do better with money, but we just couldn't cut it,
- 3:25Speaker 5: like couldn't cut a brake. And then eventually when we
- 3:28Speaker 5: did get our break, which was my partner finding full
- 3:32Speaker 5: time work again and we moved States, that was the
- 3:36Speaker 5: moment where I was like, Okay, let's get our butts
- 3:39Speaker 5: into gear. We've been given this sort of ticket to
- 3:42Speaker 5: get ourselves out of trouble financially, so I like, we
- 3:46Speaker 5: might as well grab it by the horns and really
- 3:49Speaker 5: focus on getting out of debt and getting ourselves back
- 3:51Speaker 5: into a better financial situation because for years we had
- 3:55Speaker 5: struggled with you know, not being able to do social
- 3:58Speaker 5: things like obviously like defaulting on our credit reports. Yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 5: like pretty much everything that was bad happened to us
- 4:08Speaker 5: with money.
- 4:09Speaker 6: So yeah, and.
- 4:10Speaker 4: What was your first sort of point of call in
- 4:13Speaker 4: terms of, you know, teaching yourself stuff. You said that
- 4:16Speaker 4: you'd recently found our podcast and you've binged it.
- 4:18Speaker 3: But what else did you.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Find, either in terms of you know, education or just
- 4:23Speaker 4: online communities. What were the things that you found that
- 4:26Speaker 4: were quite helpful?
- 4:26Speaker 6: So I think my first introduction.
- 4:30Speaker 5: To it all was I don't know, I think maybe
- 4:34Speaker 5: just doing some googling, and then I found through Instagram
- 4:38Speaker 5: a lot of like budget accounts and debt free accounts,
- 4:42Speaker 5: and I was like, whoa, this is cool, Like there's
- 4:44Speaker 5: a whole little society and yeah, yeah, yeah, I didn't
- 4:49Speaker 5: know existed. And so firstly I was like using that
- 4:52Speaker 5: for tips and like using people's budgeting templates and that
- 4:55Speaker 5: sort of stuff.
- 4:57Speaker 6: And then from there it kind of through.
- 5:00Speaker 5: There was a couple of people who, you know, as
- 5:02Speaker 5: you'd know within that community, there's a few like cult following,
- 5:06Speaker 5: you know, with people that have done different totally different
- 5:09Speaker 5: YouTube channels and that sort of stuff. So I just
- 5:13Speaker 5: sort of kept reading and watching, and what started within
- 5:18Speaker 5: the Instagram community really grew into a massive passion for
- 5:22Speaker 5: me and just wanting to learn and consume as much
- 5:26Speaker 5: knowledge as possible about money. So cool.
- 5:29Speaker 6: Yeah, so like.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Not going through it, but that's so cool that you've
- 5:33Speaker 2: gone through this journey and I can feel it in
- 5:36Speaker 2: your voice that you're speaking so honestly about it. And
- 5:40Speaker 2: one of the questions that I have that I think
- 5:42Speaker 2: is really important to bring up here actually, and it's
- 5:44Speaker 2: not related to my usual interview money dire questions, but
- 5:48Speaker 2: throughout that period, how was your mental health?
- 5:50Speaker 6: Oh? So bad.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I'm quite open and honest about my mental health issues.
- 5:56Speaker 5: I've struggled with depression anxiety for a number of years,
- 6:00Speaker 5: and that was definitely amplified during those difficult times when
- 6:06Speaker 5: you're in such a negative place financially, especially because it's
- 6:12Speaker 5: such a taboo topic for people, you know, I think
- 6:14Speaker 5: it really hits some people in the ego and they
- 6:18Speaker 5: feel ashamed to talk about when they're struggling with money.
- 6:23Speaker 5: So yeah, it's really a really negative place to be in,
- 6:26Speaker 5: and I don't think that gets spoken about enough.
- 6:30Speaker 6: It can really destroy people.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, And that's just kind of what we're sitting
- 6:33Speaker 2: in the back of my mind as you were speaking
- 6:36Speaker 2: through that, because it just compounds mental health. So like
- 6:39Speaker 2: if you're prone to it, it amplifies it. If you
- 6:43Speaker 2: you know, haven't had mental health issues before and now
- 6:45Speaker 2: you're going through pretty significant financial you know, disadvantage, you
- 6:51Speaker 2: start to develop these you know, mental health issues, and
- 6:54Speaker 2: it just is not fair, Like, and I think that
- 6:57Speaker 2: we don't talk about it enough. We don't talk about
- 6:59Speaker 2: the relationship between money and mental health nearly enough. And
- 7:02Speaker 2: I think that's something that with Shees on the Money,
- 7:03Speaker 2: we're always talking about and trying to get people to
- 7:06Speaker 2: see that these things are so closely related. And if
- 7:09Speaker 2: you can sort money out in someone's family, you can
- 7:12Speaker 2: have such a big impact. It's not just about putting
- 7:15Speaker 2: food on the table, albeit that's so important. It's about
- 7:18Speaker 2: mental health, the mental health of your kids, the relationships
- 7:21Speaker 2: you have, the way you interact in those relationships every
- 7:24Speaker 2: single day is impacted by your money story. And it
- 7:26Speaker 2: just so powerful.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Yeah, one hundred percent. And that's the thing, Like, when
- 7:30Speaker 5: it comes down to like the basics, you really can't
- 7:35Speaker 5: survive without money, Like, and especially in this day and age,
- 7:39Speaker 5: like everything is based around money and what you can afford,
- 7:44Speaker 5: and if you're drowning in debt, and all that sort
- 7:46Speaker 5: of stuff.
- 7:46Speaker 6: So, yeah, I think it's so.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Important having a good money and mental health balance because
- 7:54Speaker 5: they both affect each other absolutely.
- 7:57Speaker 4: So you eventually start paying off this debt, you get
- 8:01Speaker 4: back to you know, almost even, and tell me about
- 8:05Speaker 4: and this is where it starts getting fun.
- 8:07Speaker 3: And I was like, this sounds so cool.
- 8:10Speaker 4: You're pregnant with the child and you know you become parents,
- 8:13Speaker 4: but you decide, nah, that doesn't mean I'm not going
- 8:16Speaker 4: to keep working, so you start snooping around on Air Tasker,
- 8:19Speaker 4: So tell me about that.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Yes, So when I we just we got out of
- 8:24Speaker 5: debt a month after our son was born.
- 8:28Speaker 6: That was like our goal of wanting to have a baby.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, how good is that?
- 8:32Speaker 2: How good?
- 8:34Speaker 5: I'm in my late thirties and we've sort of made
- 8:36Speaker 5: that decision of no, we want we want to have
- 8:38Speaker 5: a baby sooner than later, so we'll like, let's get
- 8:42Speaker 5: pregnant and then pay off our debt. And thank god
- 8:44Speaker 5: we got it done. Anyway, Yes, Air Tasker. When I
- 8:48Speaker 5: went on maternity leave, I was at home. This was
- 8:52Speaker 5: before like payments start and stuff like that. I were
- 8:57Speaker 5: sitting at home all the time, heavily pregnant, and I'm like,
- 9:01Speaker 5: I surely there's something I can do with my time
- 9:05Speaker 5: besides watching trash TV every day.
- 9:08Speaker 3: So just for.
- 9:09Speaker 4: People that don't know, can you just quickly in a
- 9:11Speaker 4: sentence just describe what air tasker is in general if
- 9:14Speaker 4: people haven't.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Heard of it.
- 9:15Speaker 5: So, air Tasker is essentially an online platform.
- 9:19Speaker 6: Where you can.
- 9:21Speaker 5: Offer your services or request other people's services, and then
- 9:26Speaker 5: you kind of like bargain with other people and then
- 9:30Speaker 5: people select you or you select people based off you know,
- 9:33Speaker 5: experience their offer, that sort of stuff reviews. So yeah,
- 9:36Speaker 5: air Tasker, I was working as someone offering my services.
- 9:41Speaker 3: And what were you offering?
- 9:42Speaker 5: I was offering. I've got a history in like design
- 9:46Speaker 5: and stuff like that. I never worked professionally in design.
- 9:49Speaker 5: It's what I wanted to do when I graduated from school,
- 9:51Speaker 5: but I flunked and.
- 9:52Speaker 6: Never did it. But I started offering graphic.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Design services and like online administration services so like transcribing
- 10:02Speaker 5: data entry, that sort of stuff.
- 10:04Speaker 6: Yep.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Yeah, And there is really no job too small for
- 10:07Speaker 4: air task stuff like smart I've seen stuff that it's like, oh,
- 10:10Speaker 4: I've got a word document, can you like save it
- 10:13Speaker 4: to a pea?
- 10:14Speaker 3: That like really small obsw stuff like that. People like
- 10:18Speaker 3: I don't know how to do it, I'll pay you
- 10:19Speaker 3: four dollars. I've got one hundred of them.
- 10:20Speaker 6: You're like, okay, I one of those jobs before.
- 10:24Speaker 5: It's like they just don't have the program or the
- 10:26Speaker 5: knowledge to do it, and they'll pay you twenty bucks
- 10:29Speaker 5: to do it.
- 10:30Speaker 2: What shocks me most about that is they've had the
- 10:33Speaker 2: technology ability to download the app and post it. Yeah,
- 10:39Speaker 2: pick it out task, but they can't just go file
- 10:42Speaker 2: say that as Adobe.
- 10:44Speaker 6: Yeah, that's it.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I'm going to just not share how to though, because
- 10:49Speaker 2: I want to keep you in the job, my friends.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Yeah, you can make a really good YouTube video, Victoria.
- 10:54Speaker 4: That's just here's how to save a document to a PDF,
- 10:56Speaker 4: and you would wipe out a whole industry.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Sorry, please do not.
- 11:01Speaker 3: So what kind of money can you earn?
- 11:04Speaker 4: Obviously it's you know, the more hours you spend, the
- 11:07Speaker 4: more you can get. But how much were you sort
- 11:09Speaker 4: of earning? Keeping in mind, you know you are pregnant
- 11:12Speaker 4: and trying to keep some kind of calm in your life.
- 11:15Speaker 6: So it's important to know that air tasker do take
- 11:17Speaker 6: out a feed?
- 11:18Speaker 2: Oh what's that fee?
- 11:20Speaker 5: So say, if someone wants to pay you to do
- 11:24Speaker 5: a graphic design job for one hundred dollars, and you
- 11:27Speaker 5: accept that one hundred dollar job, you may only get
- 11:29Speaker 5: paid like eighty dollars because Air Tasker will take a fee.
- 11:32Speaker 6: Oh wow, yeah that's an estimate. An estimate.
- 11:35Speaker 5: It may not be that exactly, but yeah, at the start,
- 11:39Speaker 5: I wasn't making much money because you kind of have
- 11:41Speaker 5: to build up you know, like a profile and examples
- 11:44Speaker 5: and reviews and you know, star ratings and stuff. But
- 11:48Speaker 5: I think within that financial year, I think I made
- 11:54Speaker 5: maybe like three grand on air Tasker.
- 11:57Speaker 2: That's pretty good for sitting at home watching trash tea
- 12:00Speaker 2: and waiting to have a baby.
- 12:01Speaker 5: I okay, yes, yeah that's it. Yeah, so it's it's
- 12:06Speaker 5: a good little earner. But I think the important thing
- 12:09Speaker 5: is Air Tasker led me to doing what I currently.
- 12:14Speaker 6: Do, which is what my friend I now.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Work as a freelance designer for a design studio in Brisbane.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, how cool you use the word flunk Before,
- 12:26Speaker 3: like in high school, I wanted to do this.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Now now you're like, and you're not employed doing it.
- 12:31Speaker 2: You're a freelance and doing it so you've got your
- 12:33Speaker 2: own hustle.
- 12:34Speaker 6: What how cool is that?
- 12:36Speaker 2: So you've gone from being like, oh I love this.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I cannot tell you how excited I am about your
- 12:41Speaker 2: money story. So you've gone from just having like not
- 12:44Speaker 2: great attitude towards money, not really learning about it growing up,
- 12:48Speaker 2: you know, being in some pretty significant debt, having super
- 12:51Speaker 2: stressful years, to being like a kid lass mum who
- 12:54Speaker 2: is debt free and runs your own truck.
- 12:57Speaker 6: That's it.
- 12:58Speaker 2: If that's not inspiring, I I don't know what it is.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Yeah, And then I've still I've got a couple of
- 13:02Speaker 5: other side hustles there as well.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Of course she does what are they?
- 13:08Speaker 5: So I've got the freelance job. Then I also do
- 13:11Speaker 5: a because my backgrounds in cleaning. I worked in housekeeping
- 13:14Speaker 5: for like ten years up until I had my baby,
- 13:17Speaker 5: and I now do a local clean for an airbnb
- 13:21Speaker 5: for a local mum. So that's anywhere from like three
- 13:25Speaker 5: times a week to a couple of times a month,
- 13:28Speaker 5: which is just a little bit of extra pocket money.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And then I also do reselling at markets, So I
- 13:35Speaker 5: do seasonal markets where I resell old clothes of mine
- 13:39Speaker 5: or like really cool vintage lines that I pick up.
- 13:42Speaker 5: That's another little earner.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Yeah, so, and what's your attitude with having a consistent
- 13:51Speaker 4: income versus, you know, keeping it a bit varied and
- 13:54Speaker 4: having different things on the go, Because does that make
- 13:57Speaker 4: it mentally stressful or maybe it's mentally stimulating because you're
- 14:00Speaker 4: doing lots of different things and going to different places.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Where do you find the balance of those?
- 14:05Speaker 5: I think because I'm not solely relying on this on
- 14:08Speaker 5: my income to get us by, Like, it's important to
- 14:11Speaker 5: note my partner does work in construction and he sits
- 14:14Speaker 5: on a salary.
- 14:15Speaker 6: I think he's in a fourth year apprentice now, so.
- 14:17Speaker 5: His salary is around maybe seven year eighty thousand, So
- 14:22Speaker 5: that's still a consistent income for us. So yeah, my
- 14:26Speaker 5: varied freelancing, soul tradeer work is more so just pocket
- 14:32Speaker 5: money and extra savings.
- 14:34Speaker 4: And I know the answer to this because you told
- 14:37Speaker 4: me in the email. But for Victoria, you went from
- 14:40Speaker 4: being in debt and paying the debt off and then
- 14:42Speaker 4: I believe any extra money you made from this kind
- 14:45Speaker 4: of stuff you saved and started investing.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Where were you at at the moment?
- 14:50Speaker 6: Yeah, so I thoughtfolios. I think maybe just under twenty
- 14:54Speaker 6: thousand dollars my gosh, yes, yeah, oh, good.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I want to get a little bit paid. So you
- 15:00Speaker 2: mentioned your partner's income before. What are you earning at
- 15:04Speaker 2: the moment?
- 15:05Speaker 5: I my estimate for this financial year is probably around
- 15:13Speaker 5: thirty thousand. It's not huge, but a portion of that
- 15:18Speaker 5: is also job keeper. So I was very, very lucky
- 15:20Speaker 5: when COVID hit that because I was still employed with
- 15:23Speaker 5: my previous employers, I did get job keeper on the
- 15:26Speaker 5: part time basis scale.
- 15:27Speaker 2: That is awesome. Yeah, you're saying like that's not as good,
- 15:31Speaker 2: but that is epic given how much you've managed to
- 15:33Speaker 2: save and invest, like that is such an accomplishment. Like
- 15:37Speaker 2: I'm just looking at this going wow, Like I have
- 15:39Speaker 2: so many questions between you and your partner. How much
- 15:43Speaker 2: money sitting in your bank account right now?
- 15:46Speaker 5: We have twenty seven thousand in our house was it fund?
- 15:51Speaker 5: I've got five hundred in my business account. We've got
- 15:56Speaker 5: roughly a thousand within our saving spending account sorry our
- 16:01Speaker 5: spending's accounts. Oh, we've got our emergency fund, but it's
- 16:04Speaker 5: depleted at the moment, which.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Kind of makes sense given the current economic crisis, which
- 16:10Speaker 2: is nice. And how do you how do you feel
- 16:14Speaker 2: when making decisions around money nowadays? Like having been through
- 16:17Speaker 2: such a stressful time, especially during COVID. How did that
- 16:21Speaker 2: make you, guys feel?
- 16:22Speaker 5: It sounds funny, but like whenever we get paid every
- 16:25Speaker 5: week and I'm like moving all of our money around
- 16:27Speaker 5: our accounts, I kind of feel empowered because it's not.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Like, yeah, totally feel that.
- 16:37Speaker 5: I don't have to sit down in front of a
- 16:39Speaker 5: spreadsheet anymore, where I'm like really looking into how we're
- 16:42Speaker 5: budgeting and like where the bills are getting paid, and
- 16:46Speaker 5: like what we might have to push back and that
- 16:47Speaker 5: sort of stuff. Like now I can just sit down
- 16:49Speaker 5: and go, Okay, we pay the same amount into every
- 16:52Speaker 5: single account every single week, same amount for bills comes
- 16:55Speaker 5: out every single week, and like it just feels really good.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I love that. You must be so proud of yourself.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I kind of like, I'm kind of yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 2: We'll have more questions with our money. Diris coming up next.
- 17:25Speaker 2: What other money habits do you have that.
- 17:26Speaker 5: You're especially proud of the fact that I think our
- 17:30Speaker 5: finances are so streamlined and we don't have to think
- 17:35Speaker 5: about it much anymore.
- 17:38Speaker 6: I'm also pretty good. I go through phases.
- 17:41Speaker 5: I've got to admit sometimes like some days a wake
- 17:44Speaker 5: up and I'll be like, all right, I'm going to
- 17:46Speaker 5: Target and I'm probably just going to spend one hundred
- 17:49Speaker 5: bucks at Target.
- 17:50Speaker 6: But we have we have, yeah, everybody.
- 17:53Speaker 5: But I feel like I'm very good at putting time
- 17:57Speaker 5: between my purchases.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Yes, I'm also.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Is it Jessica that's the one that thinks she can
- 18:04Speaker 5: manifest anything in face?
- 18:06Speaker 2: But that's yess that is actually.
- 18:07Speaker 5: I'm one hundred percent on that.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm really blameless.
- 18:13Speaker 3: To me, what you just imagine something's going to appear.
- 18:15Speaker 2: On but you're not listening to her.
- 18:17Speaker 3: You were on the show.
- 18:18Speaker 4: But I want to hear someone else say this, because
- 18:20Speaker 4: when I heard it, I was like, this sounds like
- 18:22Speaker 4: something just is.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Just made up of No, jess didn't make it up.
- 18:24Speaker 3: It's a thing money direct, tell it back to me.
- 18:27Speaker 6: Manifesting. Manifesting is one hundred percent a thing.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Like to give you an example, I had to set
- 18:33Speaker 5: up like a little home business like home study for
- 18:36Speaker 5: myself a few weeks ago. I ended up getting a
- 18:40Speaker 5: free desk, a free desk chair. I got a brand
- 18:45Speaker 5: new computer monitor for like eighty dollars and it was
- 18:49Speaker 5: like three.
- 18:50Speaker 6: Hundred and fifty.
- 18:51Speaker 5: I think, so, yeah, you just got to manifest put
- 18:54Speaker 5: those vibes out there.
- 18:56Speaker 4: So we talked about earning extra bits of money from
- 18:59Speaker 4: all the different side hustles and air task of stuff.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Do you think also not earning more but spending less
- 19:04Speaker 4: by doing this and the manifesting and finding those little bargains,
- 19:07Speaker 4: that's just as big as contributor as the earning has
- 19:10Speaker 4: been to get where you are.
- 19:11Speaker 5: One hundred percent, Like for us, where you didn't get
- 19:15Speaker 5: out of debt by earning a high income. We got
- 19:17Speaker 5: out of debt by spending less, budgeting better and like, yeah,
- 19:23Speaker 5: trying to hustle and find like cheaper goods and stuff
- 19:26Speaker 5: like that.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Can I just put an exclamation mark right here because
- 19:29Speaker 4: we know and from Victoria's there's a lot of people
- 19:33Speaker 4: that earn a lot of money and are broke, and
- 19:35Speaker 4: there's a lot of people that don't earn that much,
- 19:39Speaker 4: you know, in inverted commas, but are really savvy and
- 19:41Speaker 4: they're smart with it, and they're by far better off
- 19:44Speaker 4: than the people with the high income. So if a
- 19:46Speaker 4: lot of people are in a bit of a tough
- 19:48Speaker 4: spot or they think, oh, my industry doesn't actually pay
- 19:51Speaker 4: that well, well, I mean sure in theory it helps
- 19:54Speaker 4: to earn a lot more, but it's not actually a
- 19:56Speaker 4: huge factor.
- 19:56Speaker 3: It is genuinely what you do with it.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Yeah, absolute, it's not what you make. It's what you're
- 20:02Speaker 2: contributing towards debt reduction and all of the other things
- 20:05Speaker 2: around it. And there are so many people in our
- 20:08Speaker 2: community at the moment that are in the position that
- 20:10Speaker 2: you were a couple of years ago, and it's so
- 20:14Speaker 2: hard to see the light at the end of the
- 20:15Speaker 2: tunnel when you are in it, like when you're in
- 20:17Speaker 2: the trenches and you just wake up every day and
- 20:19Speaker 2: remember that that's the situation, and it just feels all overwhelming.
- 20:23Speaker 2: So to past you and to our community members who
- 20:27Speaker 2: are currently in this situation, what would you say to them?
- 20:31Speaker 6: Just like, stick to your guns.
- 20:34Speaker 5: I feel like if you're on a lower income, like
- 20:36Speaker 5: I've worked in housekeeping for ten years, that's not a
- 20:39Speaker 5: high income, it might take longer, but you just have
- 20:45Speaker 5: to persevere. Because I constantly got stuck in that trap
- 20:48Speaker 5: of I'm not getting anywhere with paying this debt off,
- 20:51Speaker 5: and then I'd create more debt because I'd give in
- 20:54Speaker 5: on myself. So yeah, I think it's just, yeah, you
- 20:57Speaker 5: really got to persevere. Yeah, absolutely, It just takes a
- 21:01Speaker 5: little bit of a longer time, but you'll get there,
- 21:05Speaker 5: and once you get there, it's like you won't even
- 21:08Speaker 5: know yourself once you get there.
- 21:09Speaker 2: What is the one thing that you wish you'd found
- 21:12Speaker 2: earlier in this journey that could have helped you. Is
- 21:15Speaker 2: it a budgeting tool? Is it just believing in yourself?
- 21:18Speaker 2: Is it, you know, air tasker? Like, what's the one
- 21:22Speaker 2: thing you wish you know, when you were really in
- 21:24Speaker 2: the trenches of it, you wish you had.
- 21:27Speaker 6: It goes back even further than that.
- 21:29Speaker 5: I wish that like I got taught about money and
- 21:31Speaker 5: handling money when I was in school, Like that's what
- 21:34Speaker 5: it comes down to, I think, or even when I
- 21:38Speaker 5: freshly got out of school, like I just wish that
- 21:41Speaker 5: somebody grabbed me and was like, stop getting credit cards,
- 21:45Speaker 5: stop getting personal loans. But I think it's just I
- 21:48Speaker 5: don't think it's any particular thing. I just think it's
- 21:51Speaker 5: overall money, literacy, and education, because I feel like if
- 21:56Speaker 5: you have that education and understanding, you're less likely to
- 21:59Speaker 5: get yourself in like precarious situations with money.
- 22:02Speaker 2: I couldn't agree more. I absolutely couldn't agree more. And
- 22:06Speaker 2: hopefully with where she's on the money is going, we
- 22:09Speaker 2: will find our way and weasel our way into the
- 22:12Speaker 2: education system somehow. I'm putting it out to the universe,
- 22:17Speaker 2: my friend. Yeah, I'm going to manifest it. Yes, So
- 22:23Speaker 2: what are you currently saving for? What are your big
- 22:26Speaker 2: money goals? You mentioned before you had a home deposit account.
- 22:29Speaker 2: What are we looking forward to in the future.
- 22:31Speaker 5: Yeah, so our semi short term goal, I guess with
- 22:34Speaker 5: the house, we want to get a twenty percent deposit
- 22:37Speaker 5: for that, and we're hoping to get that within the
- 22:40Speaker 5: next two years or so.
- 22:42Speaker 6: For me personally, my biggest.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Goal, and this has been since the start, is creating
- 22:47Speaker 5: a passive income through my investments. So I want to
- 22:51Speaker 5: eventually one day be living off my dividends and stuff
- 22:56Speaker 5: like that. So that's like for me, that's more important than.
- 22:59Speaker 2: How So absolutely sounds like you are well.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Sounds familiar.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yes, I don't know who else would have that goal.
- 23:10Speaker 2: So how would you rate yourself if I forced you
- 23:12Speaker 2: to give yourself a financial rating?
- 23:14Speaker 5: I feel like from where I've come to where we
- 23:18Speaker 5: are now, I would say in A I honestly think
- 23:22Speaker 5: the only thing holding me back from an A plus
- 23:25Speaker 5: is the fact that I am a little bit of
- 23:27Speaker 5: a gambler and sometimes I do take riskier options with
- 23:31Speaker 5: investing and stuff like that.
- 23:34Speaker 4: But so, do you mean gambling in terms of risky
- 23:37Speaker 4: investments or do you mean on the dogs?
- 23:40Speaker 6: I didn't bow.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Fair.
- 23:45Speaker 5: It's yeah, it's probably the same with shopping and that
- 23:48Speaker 5: sort of stuff.
- 23:49Speaker 6: Like.
- 23:49Speaker 5: I feel like sometimes I can be a little bit
- 23:51Speaker 5: irresponsible with money, and that's just an old habit I think.
- 23:54Speaker 5: But yeah, I feel like an a because I'm constantly
- 23:59Speaker 5: wanting to learn more and constantly wanting to set myself
- 24:04Speaker 5: and my family up for a better future.
- 24:05Speaker 6: So and I'm just so passionate about money.
- 24:08Speaker 2: So yeah, that is such a nice way to wrap it,
- 24:10Speaker 2: and I would absolutely agree with the A for yourself. Well,
- 24:13Speaker 2: thank you, so thanks so much for having a chat
- 24:16Speaker 2: with us today. I'm honestly so grateful to get this
- 24:18Speaker 2: story out there, and I know that there are going
- 24:20Speaker 2: to be so many people listening who are going to
- 24:22Speaker 2: be so inspired by your story. And yeah, you're killing
- 24:26Speaker 2: it and I am so glad that you are here.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Oh, thank you so much. That really means a lot.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Ryan.
- 24:32Speaker 2: That was literally one of the most inspiring money diaries
- 24:36Speaker 2: I think we've done today.
- 24:37Speaker 3: What a legend.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I actually am so proud of her, even though I
- 24:41Speaker 2: didn't do it.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Ye, you're impressed by her.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I was very impressed by her. But unfortunately that
- 24:46Speaker 2: is all we have time for today. But before we
- 24:49Speaker 2: head off, we'd like to acknowledge and pay respects to

- 25:07Speaker 2: and our kindness now, friends, the advice shared on She's
- 25:10Speaker 2: on the Money is always general in nature and it
- 25:13Speaker 2: doesn't ever actually consider your personal circumstances. I am really
- 25:16Speaker 2: sorry about that. She's on the Money exists purely for
- 25:19Speaker 2: educational purposes and should not be relied upon to make

- 25:57Speaker 3: You might be in the middle of the train wreck
- 25:59Speaker 3: right now. I would love that.
- 26:01Speaker 2: I would love to hear it. Like I don't love
- 26:03Speaker 2: that you're there, but I want to be a part
- 26:05Speaker 2: of that journey. And maybe we've got some tips or
- 26:07Speaker 2: tricks or you could inspire someone who's going through that
- 26:10Speaker 2: to know that they're not alone.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and a lot of people message and say i'd
- 26:12Speaker 4: be great to hear some different pieces. And as you
