- 0:22I am so pleased that you're here.

- 0:29I'm going to share it in the context of storytelling.
- 0:32To build that awareness and have that conversation.
- 0:36if this is the first time that you're landing on this podcast and haven't been falling on real time.
- 0:42Welcome.
- 0:43For those that have been following me in real time.
- 0:45And you're probably wondering where did I go in the month of September?
- 0:48Well, my family took a much needed holiday for three weeks To tour around Italy and Greece.
- 0:55we brought the daughters with us along with their boyfriends.
- 0:59What a wonderful vacation.
- 1:01It was so hard to come back.
- 1:03Especially coming back, knowing full well that we were moving my daughter out of the house.
- 1:10For university packing up all of her stuff To start her life.
- 1:14In her new apartment with her boyfriend.
- 1:17And I was in complete denial that she was leaving.
- 1:20So when we finally came back, It was with such heaviness.
- 1:25And so I thought what a great way to start off season two.
- 1:30by being open and real and honest, and sharing with you.
- 1:33My story.
- 1:34About empty nest syndrome and hopes that something I will share can help you or maybe resonate with you.
- 1:41You've already gone through it.
- 1:43But wherever you are at.
- 1:45In this stage in life and let's face it.
- 1:47Many of us moms will go through emptiness in term or we're taking care of loved ones.
- 1:53On the other end or parents, the sandwich generation.
- 1:56Wherever you might be at, even if you don't have children of your own.
- 2:01There is.
- 2:02A message in here as we go through the changes in life.
- 2:07That are similar to emptiness syndrome, but they happen in many aspects of our lives.
- 2:11And I'm going to get into that in this episode.
- 2:13So I'm so happy for you to join.
- 2:16And I encourage you Please join the Facebook group.
- 2:18If you want to have more.
- 2:20Personal.
- 2:22Intimate conversations.
- 2:24And share information about the menopausal journey.
- 2:26My face book group is called personal and universal.
- 2:29I love to have you joined me.
- 2:32So as we got back last weekend and literally just happened last weekend that we moved my daughter.
- 2:39I must have cried for a solid 48 hours.
- 2:42It was such a heaviness on my heart.
- 2:45I was just consumed.
- 2:46And now I'd heard about empty nest syndrome.
- 2:49But until you're going through it, walking through that fire.
- 2:52You can't actually feel the intensity of it.
- 2:56Well, let me tell you it was intense.
- 2:59And so I poured over the internet.
- 3:02Dr.
- 3:02Google trying to find all kinds of information.
- 3:06On it and what to do, but it from.
- 3:09You know, sites like the better up or a good therapy.
- 3:14Insight psychological, even some health sites such as the Mayo clinic, for example.
- 3:21And then I landed on calm.com that beautiful meditation app.
- 3:25They have great articles on their blog.
- 3:29And so I wanted to take all the snippets of information I found.
- 3:32And compress it into what I hope to be a really helpful.
- 3:37And informative.
- 3:38Episode.
- 3:39So let's dive in.
- 3:41Shall we.
- 3:42I think a great place to start is defined what emptiness syndrome is.
- 3:47And then look at.
- 3:48Different stages and phases.
- 3:51Of the emotions that come with emptiness syndrome.
- 3:54by definition, emptiness syndrome.
- 3:57It's not a clinical diagnosis, but rather an emotional phase that many parents experience when they're.
- 4:04Only child or their last child leaves the home.
- 4:07It can evoke these feelings of grief and loneliness.
- 4:11As us parents, we confront this shift in our roles and the loss of our daily connections with our children.
- 4:18It's a big change and it's completely normal to feel a mix of emotions.
- 4:23Sadness loneliness and even a sense of redundancy.
- 4:26And I'll get into that.
- 4:28You know, after all, as parents, we've devoted years to be actively involved.
- 4:33Raising our children involved in their lives.
- 4:36And now that chapter has come to a close.
- 4:40So, what are we going to do about it?
- 4:41I think it's really important first to understand that phases of emptiness syndrome.
- 4:48This can be so immensely beneficial one because it helps you recognize.
- 4:52The strange emotion that you're going through.
- 4:55And to be able to accept that it's happening.
- 4:58This is a healthy way to move through each of the stages.
- 5:03I find that it allows me permission.
- 5:06Too.
- 5:07Allow that sensation, that feeling and going through to happen.
- 5:12And to let it come up.
- 5:14And then.
- 5:15Not deny it, or if you will, or shove it away because That can be terribly unbeneficial and emotionally unhealthy.
- 5:24In the long run.
- 5:25So by recognizing these stages, you can see where you're at with the hopes of knowing that this the next stage will come.
- 5:33And then this too will pass.
- 5:35How long does emptiness syndrome last?
- 5:37Well, that's very personal to every individual.
- 5:40Of course.
- 5:41Some, it could be just a few days.
- 5:43Others have to move through it over several weeks.
- 5:46And I've even found the references said it can last up to two months.
- 5:52And it's a form of grieving too.
- 5:53So again, give yourself permission.
- 5:56But recognize what each of these stages are and those stages, the first.
- 6:00Is denial.
- 6:02That initial shock that can lead to this.
- 6:04Disbelief about your child moving out.
- 6:07I for one had gone through denial under vacation Fortunately, the vacation helped me suppress that because I was having so much joy.
- 6:15being in Italy and Greece.
- 6:17And so I could shove that emotional way.
- 6:21But getting closer to the end of that vacation and coming home, this.
- 6:24Denial was coming up like, oh my goodness, this very next weekend.
- 6:29After we get off this airplane within a few days.
- 6:33We're packing everything up.
- 6:35Uh, loading up the trailers and heading down.
- 6:38To move my daughter out.
- 6:41But.
- 6:42In denying myself.
- 6:45They're privileged to experience this new phase.
- 6:48I felt that it was making the situation worse.
- 6:52The important thing is to acknowledge and accept these feelings.
- 6:56This is a normal response.
- 6:57The denial is normal.
- 6:59And denial.
- 7:01Is met with the hardest part.
- 7:03And for me, this was terribly heavy.
- 7:05Anger and sadness.
- 7:07I was angry at my spouse.
- 7:09I mean, he had nothing to do with it, but I just felt this.
- 7:12Boiling up emotion that needed to come out.
- 7:14So I was getting angry.
- 7:16At silly things and for no reason, and I'm still doing it.
- 7:19But I'm now recognizing that this is part of the empty nest syndrome stages.
- 7:24So after that denial has happened and.
- 7:26Physically in our case, physically seen the space change.
- 7:30It has completely emptied right out.
- 7:33All of her, furniture's gone.
- 7:35Many of her clothing, actually, almost all of it is gone.
- 7:39Every little sign and detail that she ever existed in the house.
- 7:43Most of it is gone.
- 7:45And.
- 7:46this is when the grief came in and it is okay.
- 7:51So when you're feeling this sadness and this anger, some of the healthy responses is to share these feelings with a trusted friend.
- 7:58And let me tell you, I poured my heart out with my husband one day expressing just.
- 8:03How heavy it felt, it felt good to cry like that as well.
- 8:07And man was, I saw big, big.
- 8:10Bucketfuls of tears.
- 8:13And finding a trusted friend.
- 8:15Maybe you can talk to, I even had a good cry out in public.
- 8:18I'm sure people who are gazing over thought what is happening here.
- 8:22But I think most of us are compassionate enough to recognize.
- 8:26When somebody needs to be.
- 8:28Consoled in there in their grief.
- 8:30Even working it out with a counselor.
- 8:33And I've said this before in previous episodes.
- 8:36Cognitive behavior therapy, working with a counselor, a therapist is so beneficial.
- 8:41For menopausal women because of so many changes that are happening that are hard to work through.
- 8:48At therapist, we could again be a family member, a loved one.
- 8:51They don't have to be.
- 8:52Board certified.
- 8:53Somebody who can just take that.
- 8:56These feelings, that pain, what you're expressing and reframe it.
- 9:00In such a way that it brings you a better perspective.
- 9:03That to me is therapy.
- 9:04So work through those emotions with someone.
- 9:06And recognize that the anger and the sadness is all part of it.
- 9:11Moving on is the acceptance stage.
- 9:14And that is when we gradually find yourselves accepting this new reality.
- 9:18And then seeking.
- 9:20New joy in our lives.
- 9:21And I'm going to get into that in a moment.
- 9:24But figuring out how can we now feel our space, like physically in our house, it was fill that space.
- 9:31And bring joy.
- 9:33Or fill that void in our lives and in our hearts and find new meaning.
- 9:37You know, when we moved Jillian out, her bedroom was completely empty.
- 9:41I mean, there was echoes in the room.
- 9:44It was daunting.
- 9:45And.
- 9:47As I started to accept this new phase.
- 9:49I just haphazardly, maybe subconsciously.
- 9:53Thought well, what a great.
- 9:54Place to move.
- 9:55Some of the outdoor furniture in just for now as a temporary.
- 9:59And we have this cute little metal bistro set that sit on, sits on our front porch.
- 10:04And the weather's starting to turn fall like, and it's damp.
- 10:07And.
- 10:08Very windy.
- 10:08And I said, it's a great time now to bring that in.
- 10:11So I just subconsciously brought it right into her front bedroom where her bedroom was.
- 10:16And set it up this cute little.
- 10:19Uh, Italian Cafe and I pulled out these two tea cups.
- 10:24Of my grandmothers.
- 10:25Yeah.
- 10:25I tend to hold on to things.
- 10:27Not everything.
- 10:27I'm not a hoarder.
- 10:28But there are little items that I still hold on to.
- 10:31If my grandmother's.
- 10:33My mom's and even my daughters still has a few little things lying about.
- 10:38But in this particular case, I set it up like this.
- 10:40French bistro.
- 10:42And it helped me move from some sadness quite quickly into acceptance.
- 10:47Accepting this new reality, accepting that I have to do something with this space.
- 10:51And that brought me some joy.
- 10:53And then the fourth phase is renewed perspective.
- 10:56This is when we embrace this new chapter with open arms.
- 11:00Reluctantly.
- 11:00You're not, some are just elated.
- 11:02Let's face it.
- 11:03Some.
- 11:04Are cheering.
- 11:04We're empty nesters.
- 11:06Hooray.
- 11:06Let's celebrate what's front around the house, like children, ourselves.
- 11:10Not the case for me.
- 11:12So.
- 11:13Having this new found perspective.
- 11:15And for me, it was that new perspective of looking at this empty space down, figure out what I can do about it.
- 11:20This is an opportunity also for fresh starts and planning for the future.
- 11:25And I'm going to get into that.
- 11:27So if these patterns of anxiety and sadness linger, it's essential to note that these feelings are valid.
- 11:34The good news, there are effective strategies to help you move through the empty nest syndrome.
- 11:40Four steps, four things that you can do.
- 11:43And these are four things that I pulled from some of the reference material that I found online.
- 11:48It's been helpful for me.
- 11:49And I'm hoping that you'll get some benefit out of it as well.
- 11:53And the first one, and I say this a lot.
- 11:55With menopause in general.
- 11:58Focus on self care.
- 12:00Treat yourself with the same love and attention that you've given your children.
- 12:04We spend years of putting our children, our loved ones first.
- 12:08And now it's your turn to start a new hobby.
- 12:11take up a yoga class that you've been thinking about.
- 12:15Join a gym.
- 12:17Start a dance class, maybe go to the local community club and take up art.
- 12:23Whatever it is.
- 12:24This is your time.
- 12:26Don't feel that empty space now with doing more scrolling on Facebook.
- 12:32Um, and I've caught myself.
- 12:34I've been doing more Wordle, more New York times, crossword puzzles.
- 12:38I mean, it's great for the brain but it can come at a detriment if I'm using that.
- 12:43As a crutch to fill the time.
- 12:46And quite honestly, This is hard work, self care.
- 12:50It seems like self care having a bubble bath.
- 12:53Oh, so luxurious, but honestly for us, women is so hard because we have spent so many years.
- 13:00Denying ourselves as simple pleasures.
- 13:03And so now is your time.
- 13:05Now is your time to.
- 13:07Try something new.
- 13:08But remember put yourself first.
- 13:10And one of the things that I have been doing.
- 13:13Or self care.
- 13:15Is.
- 13:16To practice.
- 13:16Some self-compassion.
- 13:19And way back in season one, the very first episode.
- 13:23We started off on a talk on self-love.
- 13:27It is so important because we are the root of everything.
- 13:31And if we are not caring for ourselves or take care of ourselves, In such a way.
- 13:36That we can be a benefit to others.
- 13:39And what good are we?
- 13:41So put yourself first and give yourself permission to do so.
- 13:45And that leads to the next one.
- 13:46And that is rediscovering old passions.
- 13:48I found this.
- 13:50Heaviness in my heart because.
- 13:53When I asked myself, what did I enjoy or what did I do before parenthood?
- 13:58Well, I was in the military.
- 14:00I was in uniform.
- 14:01I was serving.
- 14:02Active duty Canadian armed forces.
- 14:05And in fact, my daughter, she was conceived when I was deployed on a tour.
- 14:10And it was during the time off that you get to meet with your loved one.
- 14:17And we were touring around Greece.
- 14:20And oops.
- 14:21She was conceived.
- 14:23And I will say that touring around Greece on this recent vacation and pointing out to my daughter.
- 14:28You know, different places that our father and I had gone to brought me so much joy.
- 14:33It was, but it was, it.
- 14:34Big feeling of melancholy.
- 14:36And I had to stop myself because I quickly was going to that place of, oh my goodness.
- 14:41I'm going to be an empty nester soon.
- 14:43And then asking myself, what did I enjoy before she was born?
- 14:48Well, Before I had bladder issues as a result of pregnancy.
- 14:53I was a serious, long distance runner.
- 14:55It brought me joy.
- 14:57Fitness's always brought me joy.
- 14:59Um, but I did find myself lacing up my running shoes the other day.
- 15:04And I went out for a run.
- 15:06And now I'm making plans to do more distances.
- 15:10with my stepdaughter, who is a marathon runner.
- 15:13So that was me in her shoes literally several years ago.
- 15:18So.
- 15:19Rediscovering.
- 15:20Oh passions.
- 15:21What brought you joy before?
- 15:23What purpose did you have before?
- 15:25And this can be really tough work.
- 15:27For many women to reconnect with their old selves.
- 15:31It's important to take that time.
- 15:33and silence and quietly.
- 15:36Um, meditation or get some introspective work, sit down and journal.
- 15:41And take the time to say, who am I?
- 15:43Who was I then?
- 15:44And who will I be today?
- 15:46And tomorrow.
- 15:48And this leads to the next tip.
- 15:51And that is to plan for the future.
- 15:53This can be planning for exploring new hobbies or planning to get out with your friends more often.
- 16:00Even if you have plans that have been put aside, now's the time to see.
- 16:06Plan for your educational goals.
- 16:08What was that course that I've always wanted to take.
- 16:11Either at the community college or online.
- 16:14This is your time to find new found passions.
- 16:18It's new found time, literally in your schedule.
- 16:21From my husband and I, we get really, quite excited about planning for our next vacation.
- 16:26I mean, literally getting off the plane.
- 16:28And we're already talking about, okay, where will we go?
- 16:30Next?
- 16:30Spain, Portugal.
- 16:32We have always wanted to go see Ireland.
- 16:34I like to go back to Germany again, We were getting excited about planning for.
- 16:39Hikes with the dogs on the weekend.
- 16:41Like where do you want to go walk with the dogs this weekend?
- 16:43Let's go out on this hike here.
- 16:45We've never been on this hike before.
- 16:47It's been years.
- 16:49Well before parenthood, since we've done this hike.
- 16:52So planning for the future is a great way to start shifting.
- 16:57Your life out of that heaviness of being an empty-nester in, into a new opportunity.
- 17:03With this new found time, this new found space.
- 17:07And then the last tip I want to share is to build your support network.
- 17:12This is so very important.
- 17:13I know I've talked about this before.
- 17:15Women need a community of women to get through.
- 17:18The transition to share a nurse stories because it helps validate or symptoms.
- 17:23It helps validate.
- 17:24Our emotional and our mental experiences or physical experiences when we have those open conversations with honest conversations.
- 17:32Just the sheer little stories.
- 17:34through our journey.
- 17:35And in those stories and experiences, we're helping each other so important.
- 17:41We are social creatures.
- 17:43And we need to strengthen our social connections for our mental and emotional wellbeing.
- 17:48So reach out to friends, old friends, new friends.
- 17:52Loved ones, relatives.
- 17:54And share with someone who can relate with you, this profound lifestyle change of yours and.
- 17:59Maybe can share in part on you.
- 18:01Some of.
- 18:02Some of their tips and tricks to get through it.
- 18:05You know, one of the things that I did recently.
- 18:08My support.
- 18:09Network, fortunately has been with a yoga studio.
- 18:12Right.
- 18:12Both practice and teach a class.
- 18:15And in this particular season on teaching a bar class, And I was just leading a class two days ago.
- 18:21And we like to share often.
- 18:24No.
- 18:25I'll put in a little remark in my classes about hot flashes or sore achy joints or stiff muscles.
- 18:31But I do so in such a way as to inform and educate, but build.
- 18:36A sense of awareness without sounding too lecture-y but more, insightful and enjoyable.
- 18:42And in this particular class towards the end, when I was allowing the participants just to lie in stillness, to assimilate all their hard work from the class.
- 18:50I was recounting my heaviness of empty nest syndrome.
- 18:55And I saw one of the ladies not in the corner.
- 18:58And I said, While you're lying here.
- 19:02I want you to lie here in gratitude and appreciation for your hard work during this bar class.
- 19:06And your commitment just to show up.
- 19:08Because gratitude really can shift our emotional energy or frequency or vibration.
- 19:14And.
- 19:15Allows us to go into that heart space.
- 19:17So I shared with them that in my emptiness syndrome, grief and pain.
- 19:22I had to go into the heart space, using gratitude as a tool as this little secret.
- 19:27Weapon, if you will.
- 19:29To help us.
- 19:30Move past.
- 19:31Uh, state of.
- 19:34Low energy to a state of high vibration.
- 19:38And so gratitude has been.
- 19:41The most important thing that I can do in this moment.
- 19:44But to be able to share that with the social connection that I have created, and it's been afforded to me, the gratitude I have for that.
- 19:52Helped me.
- 19:54Except some of the grief, the sadness that I had been moving through.
- 19:59Now I do want to elaborate a little bit more on gratitude.
- 20:02When you're feeling that heaviness and sadness.
- 20:05Place your hand on your heart.
- 20:06And I made this reference in.
- 20:08A few other episodes in season one, Definitely.
- 20:12When we talked about self care and self love.
- 20:15When you can find that moment of stillness in gratitude and give thanks for the opportunity for parenthood, the gift.
- 20:24Of being a mom.
- 20:27The joy and the gratitude of the years of raising the child and the gratitude for the young woman.
- 20:34In my case, my daughter, or the young man that you have raised.
- 20:38This is such a beautiful practice of self care.
- 20:42That you can move past.
- 20:44Some of the heaviness and those four stages.
- 20:46Of the emptiness syndrome, the empty nest.
- 20:48Grieving process, if you will.
- 20:52If you are in that feeling.
- 20:56Right now have empty nest syndrome or have gone through it or.
- 21:00Anticipating it to come.
- 21:01I really do hope that this episode has brought you some.
- 21:05At Feis or some feeling of connection.
- 21:09And you can relate to the stories.
- 21:12Please share it with a friend.
- 21:15A loved one who could use some of The Sage advice of empty nest syndrome or of any of the things that we talk about on all things menopausal.
- 21:24I mean, this really is a platform to bring in.
- 21:26Experts and to share stories.
- 21:29Maybe my stories.
- 21:30Stories of others.
- 21:32About women's health and the woman's journey, you know, elevated philosophy says that the.
- 21:37Midlife transition.
- 21:39From peri-menopause through to post-menopause.
- 21:42Is stepping into the age of wisdom.
- 21:44So I say it's time to get wise, get wise with each other, open up that conversation and share in that dialogue so that we can feel comforted and not alone.
- 21:54And they sensation in this pain.
- 21:56Of empty nest syndrome or in the challenges of going through menopause, because this is a great opportunity.
- 22:04To birth a second spring.
- 22:05If you will.
- 22:06to find.
- 22:07New purpose and rediscover a piece of us that we've maybe put away on the shelf.
- 22:13While we were parenting.
- 22:15And now it's time to dust that back off.
- 22:18And be experimental.
- 22:19Explore.
- 22:20How'd that childlike spirit.
- 22:23As Robert Green says in his book mastery.
- 22:28It's really as a time.
- 22:30For mastering.
