- 0:00Hello and welcome to a fabulous USA 5 Things Friday with my
- 0:06amazing Co host Jill Dvorak. Is that right?
- 0:10Right. You got it right.
- 0:12Yes and the reason why I'm smiling.
- 0:14This is like such a phenomenal Co host to be sharing this
- 0:19virtual stage with. Jill is the SVP of Content at
- 0:23NRF. I've been going to NRF 15 years.
- 0:25He's like meeting your idols. So you're like quiet.
- 0:29Don't be. Sure you're.
- 0:31Listen, we're gonna. We're gonna.
- 0:32We're in a tight schedule. We're gonna try and keep it to
- 0:3515 minutes. You know the format.
- 0:37These are the five top things in the United States of America
- 0:41that we feel are quite interesting to have a, a
- 0:45conversation on. And to start off with, we're
- 0:48going to have a, a look. I think Glossier is like one of
- 0:52the leading beauty brands, right?
- 0:54Absolutely. I, I mean, it's certainly in the
- 0:57Gen Z category. It's just, you know, they came
- 1:00out with such a unique proposition years and years ago,
- 1:04and they've just, they've kept it up.
- 1:05They've still done really, really well.
- 1:07People. Yeah.
- 1:08Following. I know what we spoke about
- 1:10their, their CEO stepping down, but the the news here is that
- 1:14obviously Glossier with their 1,000,000 TikTok followers,
- 1:19they've just launched the Glossier brand on TikTok shop.
- 1:23And, and this is really proving to me specifically in the USA,
- 1:27Gen Z's favourite place to go and buy beauty to go and
- 1:32discover, discover beauty. And you can see their own videos
- 1:36have got quite good traction. Anyway, they're sort of you can
- 1:39now buy it on TikTok shop in the US, which I think is again a
- 1:44sign of our time. So who would have thought you
- 1:47would have beauty on social media channel?
- 1:50I don't well, it's, you know, it's so interesting because you
- 1:53look and you see 1,000,000 followers like, well, what, what
- 1:56else do they need? They're doing great.
- 1:57Well, on TikTok, it's close to a billion users slash potential
- 2:02shoppers. So they've just, I can't even do
- 2:05that math. But 1,000,000 to 1 billion,
- 2:07they've exponentially outsized their audience now and they can,
- 2:12they just continue to kind of create this incredible content.
- 2:15It's a natural fit. All of their customers are also
- 2:19like very likely creators. So it's, it's a perfect fit.
- 2:22And frankly, I, I would have thought they were on there
- 2:25already. So it's great to see that now
- 2:27they're joining to be on there and have it have another Ave for
- 2:31the people to check out and, you know, learn about them.
- 2:34And I'm hoping I'm, I'm doing the CEO justice.
- 2:36I'm pretty sure she said. We're, we're not a 10 or 12 year
- 2:40old brand. We're a, we're 100 year old
- 2:43brand that's 10 years into that journey, which I absolutely
- 2:46loved. You know, I love that.
- 2:48Isn't that the right way to look at it?
- 2:49Yeah, So Emily, Emily Weiss was the founder then Kyle Leahy is
- 2:54the the current CEO that's moving out.
- 2:57And they both, I, I think they've been so true to kind of
- 3:00who their customer is that it's they seemed that they will stand
- 3:03the test of time. They weren't a blip that went
- 3:05away quickly. They've showed staying power, at
- 3:08least in this insane era of social media.
- 3:11So yeah, they're, I think they're here to stick around.
- 3:14Which is the nice link into the next one Adidas seeing to
- 3:18currently not be able to put a foot wrong.
- 3:20And I'll and I'll say why because obviously athletes, some
- 3:24of their competitors Nike have been really struggling with
- 3:28sales and some people have argued it's because they went
- 3:30off peace. They decided to disrupt the
- 3:34market just be direct to market, a direct to market brand.
- 3:37Then they went no, no, we're going to go with our partners.
- 3:39So they're bold and dabbled in both markets, but also what I
- 3:43think is a fantastic sign of the economy right now for brands is
- 3:48this sort of relationship with megastars.
- 3:52I mean, Samuel L Jackson is a megastar, so is Missy Elliott.
- 3:56And they've come up as the part of the launch of the Superstar
- 3:59brand from Adidas. They've come up with this.
- 4:02Cool. I've got the notes on who
- 4:03actually did that. Who is it?
- 4:05Where is it? Let me tell you is.
- 4:07Glorilla, I think, is part of it.
- 4:10Oh man, where is that lost it. OK, I I thought I did it, but I
- 4:14don't. But the reason why this is
- 4:16interesting and I mentioned globally, obviously this is AUS
- 4:19campaign that's literally launched one day ago had 50,000
- 4:23views in the UK right now Oasis are doing their comeback tour 30
- 4:28year old band that's been sold out.
- 4:31But look at who what brand is at the heart of this and it's
- 4:35engagement. It's again Adidas and you know
- 4:38the the pop up store that's been opened in Manchester and London,
- 4:42Adidas all over the shop connecting with Rock'n'roll,
- 4:46which again is a complete different music sphere from
- 4:50Missy Elliott and acting sphere from Sammy L Jackson.
- 4:53But I think it's a master class in working with create content
- 4:57creators at a mega star level which. 100% I mean, it's just
- 5:02bringing the relevance and bringing the cool factor and you
- 5:05know, the the joie de vive like people want to be part of
- 5:08something that's cool and relevant.
- 5:10Speaking of of cool, I got the chance to go to, you know,
- 5:13canned lions the the creative festival about out of three
- 5:18weeks ago. And it was really clear from
- 5:21kind of walking around there, the shift from giant, giant
- 5:26agencies running all creative and all brands kind of top of
- 5:31funnel to now being much more in the creator space, much more in
- 5:36the influencer, but even micro influencer space.
- 5:38There were a lot of influencers that had very specific niche,
- 5:42but fervent, fervent followers. So that was interesting to see.
- 5:46There's kind of a a wave of revenue that's shifting and is
- 5:52there for the taking for brands and for influencers.
- 5:56So I think that goes along. We're like, do you need an
- 5:59agency to go direct to a celeb? Not really, but maybe to go to
- 6:04some of these smaller influencers.
- 6:05How are you finding them? It's just it's a unique new way
- 6:09of matching. I know you love everyone, so you
- 6:11you have to be really careful and like, but who was there any
- 6:14brand that sort of blew your mind in terms of their
- 6:16activations or any, anyone that did a really great job?
- 6:20It's a great question. All of them are amazing because.
- 6:22All of them. You're in, you're in the South
- 6:24of France. I will say Walmart Connect had a
- 6:27really great one. They had a lot of their partners
- 6:31there and you could kind of go and just, it's almost like, what
- 6:36are those things called? Like a when speed dating?
- 6:39Like you could just go up and be like, oh, here's NBC, here's
- 6:41this player. Here's this player.
- 6:43And so. Yeah, and they had a lot of
- 6:46their partners there. So it was just it was a one stop
- 6:49shop to kind of meet a lot of those people.
- 6:52There were, I mean, YouTube, Salesforce, you know,
- 6:55MasterCard, the female quotient, a lot of them had these
- 6:59different brands that were speaking and just talking about
- 7:02any part of their marketing journey, mostly top of funnel
- 7:05brand awareness. But a lot of them realise you
- 7:08need the metrics obviously now and that people are there to
- 7:10talk about the metrics. So a lot we're talking about
- 7:13really what are the new KPI's that you look at and how do you
- 7:16measure them when everything is new and you're not even comping
- 7:21year over year anymore because there's brand new activations
- 7:25and things like that. So it was, it was fascinating
- 7:28and we could do a whole we should do a show from there.
- 7:32Well, we'll do that one. And I think I mean, can we call
- 7:35them a RE? Obviously they are a retailer,
- 7:37but Oh no, like what a transformation right underneath
- 7:41their their CEO the last five years going into all these
- 7:45texts. Anyway, we we definitely need to
- 7:47the show just talking on research and data.
- 7:49It just happens that NRF have had some interesting recent
- 7:53research. Yeah, I mean, we every year, you
- 7:56know, we do back to school, that's a big, big shopping
- 8:00holiday. It's not just elementary and
- 8:02middle in high school. There's a lot with college and a
- 8:04lot leaving home for the first time.
- 8:06So you think about it, it's almost like you're you're
- 8:09rehousing people each year. So that's a really, really big
- 8:13holiday, probably second only to kind of the Q4 holidays in
- 8:16December. So as of early July, where we
- 8:20are now, more than half of back to school and college shoppers
- 8:24have already started. So it's getting a little bit
- 8:26earlier and earlier each year. Some of that is because people
- 8:30are pulling forward shopping for year of tariff pricing going
- 8:34into effect. Some of that is there are deals
- 8:40right now and there are big Amazon Prime deals.
- 8:42There are big Walmart deals. Walmart launched a very similar
- 8:45sale to Amazon Prime these same four days.
- 8:48There are a tonne of those sales kind of the Christmas in July
- 8:51that we can talk about. But right now, I mean, the
- 8:53research is showing how much people are pulling this forward,
- 8:58which is great to look at the numbers.
- 9:01What it could mean is that it will be a little lighter in
- 9:04August or September if everyone's pulling these
- 9:07forward. So something to think about ties
- 9:09in a lot with our chief economist Jack Kleinhans.
- 9:12He's. Phenomenal.
- 9:13By the way, in the press. I've got a snake floating over
- 9:15NRF because this is going to become quite great for people.
- 9:20And you saw him? Yeah.
- 9:22I'm not paid, actually. And two years ago I turned up
- 9:25from Europe. Doom and gloom, the world is
- 9:28going to the and he stood up with the Deloitte.
- 9:30I can't remember whoever else was on stage with him.
- 9:32And he says numbers are really good.
- 9:34It's going to be the best year ever.
- 9:36We we're calling it that. It's going to be really good.
- 9:38And I was, oh man, you know, nothing next year.
- 9:40I said, you know what, I have to apologise because I actually
- 9:43when I did the review of it, I was like these Americans and
- 9:46their positivity about the economy, best year ever.
- 9:49But anyway, sorry, go ahead. Also, I will, I will make sure
- 9:53he knows that he was right. It is funny.
- 9:55We, we always talk about should we go back and talk about how
- 9:58correct we were? But yeah, you know, I mean,
- 10:00it's, it's a huge, huge amount of money for a lot of these, you
- 10:04know, specialty electronics, clothing, department stores,
- 10:08shoes, all of that. So, you know, each family is
- 10:12expected to spend around. It's funny, I would I would ask
- 10:16us, and I would never say this much, but about a little over
- 10:191300. It's almost $1400 for each
- 10:22school year. So for this year, last year set
- 10:24a record of just over that. It was 1370 or 1367, I think for
- 10:29each family. So last year the forecast was
- 10:33around 94 billion in schools back school shopping, not just
- 10:38school supplies. This year will be a little short
- 10:40of that. But again, if you look at the
- 10:43maybe some increase in prices due to tariffs, it will likely
- 10:47be right over. So usually we're within a one
- 10:50point margin error based on the. Back to school If you're in the
- 10:54back to school market, it's a good year.
- 10:55It's a great it's a great year. So that's get your supplies now
- 10:59if you don't want them to sell out, that's that's one of the
- 11:01things that the stores are kind of toting.
- 11:03So that's a good it's a Goodyear.
- 11:05Do you want to comment on this one or should we go straight
- 11:07forward to our final one? Yeah, let's go to our final one.
- 11:10But yeah, I mean I. Think you meant this sort of
- 11:12blends perfectly to what you were saying.
- 11:14Get those deals in. Get those deals so.
- 11:17We're not, we're not paid by Prime.
- 11:18You were telling me there's a warm up day as well and there's
- 11:20another day as well. Right.
- 11:21Yeah, yeah, I mean, at this point all of them I'm.
- 11:24I'm very serious customer at all of them, but it's interesting
- 11:28and Prime Day has been going on now close to a decade.
- 11:31Going into it, there was a forecast that Prime Day alone
- 11:35was going to have just shy of $24 billion of sales in four
- 11:40days. Now the big change this year is
- 11:42that it's a four day holiday. It used to be a 2 day holiday
- 11:45here. So then what Walmart has done,
- 11:47you know, obviously to try to get their share as well, is
- 11:51they've launched a four day holiday, same thing, prices very
- 11:55similar if not better. If you're running now, as in
- 11:57like from the 4th of July onwards.
- 11:59Exact same days. Yep, and it just so happens to
- 12:03also coincide with Nordstrom's biggest sale of the year.
- 12:06That always happens at this time of the year, the anniversary
- 12:09sale. Now Nordstrom doesn't sell quite
- 12:11the same SKU count, obviously Walmart and Amazon, but it's a
- 12:15lot of these same back to school items, the fall items, the trend
- 12:20items that you can get at a discount.
- 12:22So that's it's just a sale bonanza and I'm going to just be
- 12:26shopping again all night tonight.
- 12:29But I saw a few early results come in from Prime Day
- 12:33yesterday. More than half of the sales were
- 12:36mobile, which is really kind of what we expect most, most
- 12:40Americans have the app on their phone, but it was a little
- 12:43lighter than I think people were expecting.
- 12:47Now I, I'm imagining Walmart took a good amount of that share
- 12:51as well. But it will also be it's people
- 12:54are just getting back from a holiday weekend and you have
- 12:56four more days. So potentially the urgency of a
- 12:582 day sale got spread out into four and we might see it kind of
- 13:02pick up as the sales end. But again, I mean, Amazon puts
- 13:05all of their own products on very, very deep discount and
- 13:09then walk across the other categories.
- 13:10It has a big red banner that you can tell if it's on Prime Day,
- 13:14you have to be a prime member to shop it.
- 13:15So it's it really kind of reinforces their whole value
- 13:18prop. Now with Walmart, you don't have
- 13:20to be a Walmart plus member to shop their deals.
- 13:23So that's a really interesting take.
- 13:25Walmart plus is incredibly popular, competes with Amazon
- 13:28Prime programme. However, you don't need to be a
- 13:31Walmart Plus member to get the everyday low price at Walmart.
- 13:35One of the things I know we've got 5 things and we're like on
- 13:37the last minute, but I need to pull here.
- 13:39But here from Adweek, he and his commentary was interesting.
- 13:43He was saying that buy now, pay later is going to be a major
- 13:46factor in that Grove because a lot of shoppers leaning into buy
- 13:50now, pay later, which I thought was like, I thought people were
- 13:52coming away from it. But anyway.
- 13:54I did too. I mean, look, if they're bigger
- 13:56purchases, it makes total sense, right?
- 13:59You, you need some help kind of paying that overtime.
- 14:02But man, when I saw that buy now, pay later and a firm and
- 14:05all of those payment providers where you spread it out going on
- 14:09DoorDash and Uber Eats, I wanted to lose my mind.
- 14:12If you can't afford your Potbelly sandwich, you shouldn't
- 14:15pay for it. Like this is a red flag.
- 14:19Like stop. So.
- 14:23It makes sense for large purchases and there's a lot of
- 14:25electronics on sale. There's lots of homewares and
- 14:28furnitures and equipment on all of these websites.
- 14:32So that'll be a really interesting stat to see if we
- 14:34could look at that in the next week or two.
- 14:36That's brilliant, Jill. I want to be super respectful.
- 14:39We're at the top of our allotted time.
- 14:41Thank you so, so, so much for for joining us.
- 14:46Great way to start the day. It's a tonne of excitement and
- 14:49we love, love keeping pulse and thank you for having me.
- 14:52It's a pleasure. Until next time.
