Transcript
- 0:00Today's ad is sponsored by Finally getting home and getting into bed early after
- 0:04a long weekend. There's quite nothing like it.
- 0:08Nothing has changed since the last time I talked about all this,
- 0:11and I haven't worked with him in a really long time, and I have no plans to.
- 0:15Seth Rogen on not speaking to James Franco after a lot of allegations came out about him.
- 0:21Insert theme song here. This is the Daily Starrcast. I give you the news and maybe a laugh.
- 0:26I'm Lindsay Vernick, and today is June 15, 2026.
- 0:30Yes, I know. I did a video pod on Friday. I know it's all very, very exciting.
- 0:36I plan to do more of them soon. And if you haven't checked out my interview
- 0:41with Max, please make sure you do. I know it's very, very long. It's a lot.
- 0:47It's like a normal length podcast. But for the Daily Starcast,
- 0:50it's a very, very long one.
- 0:52So if you have some time, check it out We talked about me making out with Shane
- 0:57Gillis We talked about dating in New York and comedy,
- 1:02and crushes And a lot of other things that I can't remember right now But that
- 1:07we covered a lot of ground Oh, and we both went to an all-girls or an all-boys
- 1:12overnight camp Which was so crazy,
- 1:14Because, you know, he was a nice Jewish boy.
- 1:18Anyways, in real news, a seven-year-old boy just became the youngest person
- 1:22ever to reach the top of El Capitan in Yosemite in what sounded like a feel-good
- 1:27story, but has now turned into a full-blown climbing civil war.
- 1:32This kid Joey spent five days going up the 3,000-foot mountain with his father and brother.
- 1:38National news outlets celebrated this achievement, but a lot of climbers say
- 1:42the headlines left out some pretty important details.
- 1:45This big controversy is because the seven-year-old Joey didn't actually climb
- 1:51the route in the traditional sense.
- 1:53He kind of just like used ropes that were set up by other climbers,
- 1:58which you're supposed to set up yourself.
- 2:00Some people who've been climbing forever have compared calling it an El Cap
- 2:04climb to taking an escalator up a mountain and claiming that you climbed Mount Everest.
- 2:10This story got even messier after it came out that the family hired unofficial
- 2:14guides and climbers to do a lot of the technical work.
- 2:18An anonymous person, because I guess the climbing world is that small,
- 2:22told a climbing magazine that the kids cried regularly during the journey and
- 2:27that the trip really felt more like a social media production than a climbing expedition.
- 2:33The father has pushed back on this criticism saying the media often misrepresents
- 2:38what his children accomplish and he never claimed they were elite climbers,
- 2:42so now the debate isn't really about climbing it's about parenting publicity
- 2:47and where the line is between giving your kids incredible experiences and turning
- 2:51them into little tiny content creators so this kid may be the youngest person
- 2:55to reach the top of El Capitan?
- 2:57Or is it El Capitan? I'm not sure.
- 3:01But the dad may be the first person to get accused of stage parenting a mountain.
- 3:06Knicks fans can finally stop telling stories that began with, well, back in 1973.
- 3:13After a 53-year championship drought, the New York Knicks are NBA champions
- 3:18again, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the Finals.
- 3:25This win capped off one of the wildest playoff runs in recent NBA history.
- 3:30The Knicks were behind by 15 points in the second half on Saturday night before
- 3:35having yet another comeback.
- 3:37Jalen Brunson scored 45 points and led the charge as New York closed out the series.
- 3:42Throughout the finals, the Knicks seemed determined to give their fans cardiac issues.
- 3:46Every game was decided in the final minutes, and New York repeatedly erased
- 3:50double-digit deficits.
- 3:52Their most dramatic moment came in Game 4 the other day, when they rallied from
- 3:56a 29-point hole for their biggest comeback in NBA Finals history.
- 4:02You could literally hear the entire city screaming when they came back and won. It was so electric.
- 4:08For longtime fans, this ends more than five years of frustration,
- 4:12bad contracts, coaching changes, front office disasters, and the annual tradition
- 4:17of saying, maybe next year.
- 4:19The championship also cements Brunson as one of the most beloved athletes in New York sports.
- 4:25He was signed in 2022, and he transformed the Knicks from a respectable playoff team into champions.
- 4:31So the Knicks won their first title in 53 years proving two things miracles do happen,
- 4:38and a 78 year old man from the Upper West Side who has lived here his entire
- 4:43life just said see I told you we'd be good again in a couple of years.
- 4:47Meanwhile, over in Bangladesh, there's this rare albino buffalo named Donald
- 4:52Trump, and it has become a national attraction thanks to its blonde tuff of hair.
- 4:58The buffalo was originally destined to be sacrificed during a religious festival,
- 5:02but after going viral online, the government stepped in and moved it to a zoo.
- 5:07Thousands of people are now showing up to see this buffalo, and zoo workers
- 5:11brush its hair for visitors, and some people are traveling a very long distance just to see it.
- 5:17So there's an animal named Donald Trump, currently living in government-provided
- 5:21housing, getting his hair professionally maintained, and attracting crowds wherever
- 5:26he goes. You know, that's pretty on brand.
- 5:29Honestly, we're going to have trouble telling them apart, as if we can already.
- 5:34In Lindsay life, I was at my sister's best friend's wedding this weekend with
- 5:40my family. It was so much fun.
- 5:43And I met this really cute doctor there. So I was talking to him for a while
- 5:47and during dinner, I asked him if he wanted to go to the bar with me to get a drink.
- 5:51So I turned to my parents and I said, I'm going to go flirt with that guy over at the bar. I'll be back.
- 5:57And this man who was like my parents' age overhears and goes, oh, you mean my son?
- 6:04Let me give you some tips for that. And like goes on to me about what I should
- 6:08talk to him about, which were like the Knicks, the Giants, and like all of the
- 6:12other sports teams that we have here.
- 6:15So that was a fun night. And then yesterday, he sent me a LinkedIn request.
- 6:21I guess that's one way to connect, I guess. Thing of the week is New York's chaos era.
- 6:27Well, if you haven't heard, the Knicks just won their first championship in 53 years.
- 6:32The championship parade is Thursday in Manhattan.
- 6:36And the World Cup is underway. And New York City has decided to host all of
- 6:41this excitement at the exact same time.
- 6:44So on Thursday, hundreds of thousands of Knicks fans are expected to flood lower
- 6:48Manhattan for the city's first Knicks championship parade since 1973.
- 6:53For most people, this is literally the first time they've ever seen a Knicks
- 6:57championship celebration that wasn't on YouTube.
- 7:00And obviously, everyone will be celebrating like they haven't had any good news in years.
- 7:05At the same time, the World Cup is bringing soccer fans from all over the globe
- 7:09to New York and New Jersey, which means every bar is packed, every train is packed,
- 7:14every train that is supposed to be running express is running local,
- 7:18every sidewalk is packed, and every tourist is currently standing in the middle
- 7:21of Times Square looking directly upward for absolutely no reason.
- 7:27The city already operates at a constant level of control panic,
- 7:30and now we're adding a championship parade, international soccer,
- 7:34summer tours, and whatever fresh hell the MTA has planned for us today.
- 7:39Honestly, if aliens landed this week, nobody would even notice.
- 7:42A guy could walk through Penn Station carrying a live alpaca wearing a Knicks
- 7:46jersey, and most New Yorkers wouldn't even bat an eye.
- 7:50The city has waited over 50 years for a Knicks title, in over 30 years for the
- 7:55World Cup to come back to the States. Somehow both happened at once.
- 7:59If this city gets one more major event, we're going to start to have to stack
- 8:02people vertically. I mean, we kind of have to already.
- 8:06So if you need me this week, I'll be somewhere between a championship parade,
- 8:09a World Cup crowd, and a delayed subway train, wondering how I accidentally
- 8:14became an extra in the largest sporting event on earth.
- 8:17Cooking tip of the day. Leftovers can last a lot of days if you let them.
- 8:22Feedback, comments, questions, a nice Jewish by looking fruity,
- 8:25email me at lindsay at thedailystarcast.com. Thanks so much for listening.
- 8:29Talk to you guys tomorrow.
