- 1:07Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:10Speaker 4: that lets you be pervy about other people's money habits
- 1:14Speaker 4: for educational purposes, of course. Welcome back to another one
- 1:17Speaker 4: of our money Darius, where I get the absolute pleasure
- 1:20Speaker 4: of sitting down and talking to one of our beautiful
- 1:22Speaker 4: She's on the Money community members, all about their journey.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Let's jump straight into it, because this week I got
- 1:28Speaker 4: a message and it sounded exactly like this dear, she's
- 1:31Speaker 4: on the money after going through one of the hardest
- 1:34Speaker 4: things you can go through. I wanted to share my
- 1:36Speaker 4: story in the hope it helps other mums navigating similar challenges.
- 1:40Speaker 4: I always thought I was doing okay with money. My
- 1:43Speaker 4: husband and I saved forty grand in six months and
- 1:46Speaker 4: moved five hours out of the city to buy our
- 1:48Speaker 4: first home. I thought we were on track, but after
- 1:52Speaker 4: the still birth of our daughter, everything changed. The banks
- 1:56Speaker 4: want to help, and my workplace didn't know how to
- 1:58Speaker 4: support me. I had no idea how many financial hurdles
- 2:02Speaker 4: I'd face while also grieving. Now, I want to raise
- 2:05Speaker 4: awareness of what financial systems look like in moments like this.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Money Diarist, welcome to the show.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Thank you for having me.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Oh my god, I feel so privileged that you want
- 2:17Speaker 4: to share your child's story with us and you want
- 2:19Speaker 4: to talk to me. Oh, I just I know that
- 2:22Speaker 4: that's probably not how but like, thank you for wanting
- 2:25Speaker 4: to chat to us.
- 2:26Speaker 2: No, that's okay. I'm very happy to share my story
- 2:29Speaker 2: and my journey now that I've been through what I've
- 2:31Speaker 2: been through and hopefully educate a bit more to everybody.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Well, before I jump into the deeper questions, what great
- 2:41Speaker 4: would you give you? Money? Habits from A three to F.
- 2:43Speaker 2: If I asked right now, I'm a C.
- 2:45Speaker 4: You're a C. All right, let's see what that's about.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I need to be canceled, honestly. But money diarist, can
- 2:53Speaker 4: you tell me a little bit more about your journey?
- 2:55Speaker 2: So I grew up feeling, you know, not ever worried
- 2:58Speaker 2: about money. Both parents. It's worked in local government, so
- 3:02Speaker 2: it was always a safe money environment. There was never
- 3:05Speaker 2: any issues. I grew up always watching my mom do
- 3:08Speaker 2: a budget on a spreadsheet, and to this day she
- 3:10Speaker 2: still does it. She still calls me once a month
- 3:12Speaker 2: says I'm doing my budget today. So I grew up,
- 3:16Speaker 2: you know, watching mom did that, and I have a
- 3:17Speaker 2: memory of we won five thousand dollars once in the
- 3:20Speaker 2: early two thousands, and that was a huge deal.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Well in the early twent thousands, that's like twenty grand oh.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So my parents like paid a heap off the mortgage,
- 3:28Speaker 2: but we got one hundred dollars each meet my brother
- 3:30Speaker 2: and I.
- 3:31Speaker 4: That would have felt like a thousand at that point, I.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Went and bought a Pokemon Gold Gain for my game
- 3:35Speaker 2: Boy Color and I thought it was the best thing ever.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So yeah, good journey of money growing up, always felt safe.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Left school, took a little while to get to my
- 3:46Speaker 2: career and finally settled in that in about twenty seventeen,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and slowly worked my way up and just kept working,
- 3:53Speaker 2: taking a few holidays here and there, and then when
- 3:56Speaker 2: the pandemic kit, I was very lucky kept my job,
- 3:59Speaker 2: worked from home, actually got promoted during that time. In
- 4:03Speaker 2: between some lockdowns is when I met my now husband.
- 4:06Speaker 4: For you'd how did you guys meet?
- 4:08Speaker 2: We met in real life?
- 4:09Speaker 4: Oh? What the hell? Yeah, so through a lockdown you
- 4:13Speaker 4: met in real life. That just feels like almost fake,
- 4:15Speaker 4: my love.
- 4:16Speaker 2: It was in between some lockdowns, but it was still
- 4:19Speaker 2: in the rules where you couldn't stand. You had to
- 4:21Speaker 2: be sitting at bars and clubs and all that kind
- 4:24Speaker 2: of stuff. So we met like we weren't both planning
- 4:27Speaker 2: to go to that establishment that night, but things went
- 4:30Speaker 2: that way, and he came and sat at my table
- 4:32Speaker 2: because I looked bored.
- 4:33Speaker 4: So whoever you were with wasn't entertainment as much as good.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So we got chatting, swapped Instagrams, and then had our
- 4:43Speaker 2: first date a week later.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Kids, these days, you don't swap numbers.
- 4:46Speaker 2: No, we swapped Instagram so he felt a number was
- 4:49Speaker 2: too forward and the snapchat was too seedy. So Instagram
- 4:52Speaker 2: is where we went.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I like that there's a middle ground for us now.
- 4:56Speaker 2: We very quickly met and spoke about how we didn't
- 4:59Speaker 2: really want to live in the big city anymore. And
- 5:03Speaker 2: after knowing each other for six months, my lease was
- 5:06Speaker 2: running up where I was living in a sharehouse, and
- 5:09Speaker 2: he said, well, let's do this. So I moved in
- 5:11Speaker 2: with his parents and we knuckled down and saved forty grand.
- 5:17Speaker 4: That's how you saved the forty grand. That's a lot
- 5:20Speaker 4: of money to save in a short period of time. Like, yeah, okay,
- 5:24Speaker 4: moving in with the brand new in laws. Was that
- 5:27Speaker 4: challenging because I feel like I would have been so anxious,
- 5:30Speaker 4: like girl, I don't know. I feel like it took
- 5:32Speaker 4: literal years for me to go, Oh, I don't have
- 5:35Speaker 4: to be so highly strung around my husband's sperience.
- 5:38Speaker 2: It was definitely experience. It's also like moving from a
- 5:40Speaker 2: sharehouse to like a bedroom and all that kind of stuff.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So putting stuff in storage and downsizing a little bit,
- 5:47Speaker 2: but we knew it was going to be worth it
- 5:48Speaker 2: to get out and move. So in early twenty twenty two,
- 5:53Speaker 2: we bought our house remotely. We didn't actually see it
- 5:56Speaker 2: in person. We had to just do a FaceTime because
- 5:59Speaker 2: things were moving so quickly that when we saw it
- 6:02Speaker 2: pop up online, we called them that afternoon. They said,
- 6:04Speaker 2: come look at it tomorrow, and we said we live
- 6:06Speaker 2: five hours away, so we got a FaceTime the next day.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Oh my goodness. Property can be so hard, and that
- 6:13Speaker 4: just puts even more pressure on you, Like you just go,
- 6:15Speaker 4: oh goodness, Like we're gonna have to do this FaceTime,
- 6:17Speaker 4: make a decision really quickly. And I'm sure that they
- 6:19Speaker 4: were like there are lots of interested parties, weren't they.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah, there was someone else at the house when they
- 6:24Speaker 2: were walking us through virtually. Oh so we very quickly
- 6:29Speaker 2: put in an offer twenty grand over asking, but we
- 6:32Speaker 2: still bought our first house for four hundred thousand dollars.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Hey that's good.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah. So it was a four bedroom, reasonably like rashly painted,
- 6:40Speaker 2: had a pool, had a little shed, had a big yard.
- 6:43Speaker 2: So we were like, yeah, compared to you know Sydney
- 6:46Speaker 2: to out here. We were like dawn, you.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Like six seven months from a sharehouse to buying a
- 6:52Speaker 4: house with a pool. I love this for you.
- 6:54Speaker 2: We were pretty proud of ourselves. A lot of people
- 6:56Speaker 2: were still like, what are you doing? But that's what
- 6:59Speaker 2: we wanted to do. We didn't want to be in
- 7:00Speaker 2: the big city anymore. We want a different lifestyle, and
- 7:03Speaker 2: we up and moved up here.
- 7:05Speaker 4: So early twenty twenty two, you bought how long was
- 7:08Speaker 4: your settlement was at like normal standard three months?
- 7:10Speaker 2: It was standard, but we had early access so we
- 7:13Speaker 2: could every weekend we literally on the Friday night, we'd
- 7:16Speaker 2: pack up cars. We'd leave at like four am Saturday mornings,
- 7:20Speaker 2: come up, do stuff in the house, see our friends,
- 7:23Speaker 2: and then drive back to Sydney on the Sunday.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Hey, not bad, but also you do what you've got
- 7:27Speaker 4: to do right or you don't miss those days though.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Exciting but also a long slog.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah. So well, I moved up in July twenty twenty two,
- 7:36Speaker 2: but my partner was a truck driver at the time,
- 7:39Speaker 2: so he kept working in Sydney, so I was by
- 7:42Speaker 2: myself at home in a new job too. I got
- 7:45Speaker 2: a new job at that time, and I lived up
- 7:48Speaker 2: here by myself during the week for the first six
- 7:51Speaker 2: months of us moved up here.
- 7:52Speaker 4: So you've been together six months, you buy a house,
- 7:55Speaker 4: you live together for another six months. At what point
- 7:57Speaker 4: does this man that asked for your Instagram come your husband?
- 8:01Speaker 2: So he then proposed in September of twenty twenty three,
- 8:05Speaker 2: and at this point we were pregnant with our first child.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So we fell pregnant in the May of twenty twenty three,
- 8:11Speaker 2: and he proposed over breakfast, and he organized the whole
- 8:15Speaker 2: thing from his truck while he was driving. He got
- 8:19Speaker 2: his mum to go by get the ring. He asked
- 8:23Speaker 2: for permission with a ten pack of Jack Daniels to
- 8:26Speaker 2: my dad's place, all that kind of stuff.
- 8:28Speaker 4: That's so sweet.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Organized it all remotely, and.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Is that like a proposal that you were like, this
- 8:34Speaker 4: is so me Yes, oh I love that.
- 8:37Speaker 2: And it was such a random restaurant. He's like, where
- 8:39Speaker 2: do you want to go for breakfast? And I chose
- 8:40Speaker 2: when he went are you sure? And I was like, yeah, it's.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Just breakfast to do. It's not like we're getting engaged.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But it actually ended up being nice because I was
- 8:47Speaker 2: like overlooking a park and all that kind of stuff.
- 8:50Speaker 4: So it's so cute.
- 8:52Speaker 2: So yeah, so that's September of twenty twenty three, and
- 8:54Speaker 2: he said, let's get married quickly. I want us to
- 8:57Speaker 2: have the same last name, all that stuff before the
- 8:59Speaker 2: baby come. So the baby was due.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Because you got you were pregnant in May, right, and
- 9:03Speaker 4: then you go.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so the baby was due on Valentine's Day of
- 9:07Speaker 2: twenty twenty four.
- 9:07Speaker 4: How was your pregnancy because I feel like sometimes.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I was really crook, so and then you know, when
- 9:13Speaker 2: you look back and find out why I was really crook.
- 9:17Speaker 2: And we got to mid November, so we were getting
- 9:20Speaker 2: married mid November, organized it all. We did full DIY
- 9:23Speaker 2: on a friend's farm.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Oh my god, girl, you were pregnant and planning a wedding,
- 9:27Speaker 4: and you would have been like heavily pregnant.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I was. We got married, I was twenty seven weeks.
- 9:32Speaker 4: That's a lot of weeks, especially if you're feeling a
- 9:34Speaker 4: bit trashy.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Like, yeah, so we're in November, I'm feeling a bit crook.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Getting follow ups and all that kind of stuff. Went
- 9:42Speaker 2: to have a scan on a different part of my stomach,
- 9:45Speaker 2: and that part was near where the baby lives, and unfortunately,
- 9:49Speaker 2: that's when we found out the baby had passed away. No,
- 9:52Speaker 2: I was twenty six weeks.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Twenty six No, Oh my goodness, Like, I don't know
- 9:58Speaker 4: how that feels. And you know what, I'm not even
- 10:00Speaker 4: going to try and say that I do, because it
- 10:03Speaker 4: is so different to anything I've ever been through. But
- 10:07Speaker 4: just the idea that you weren't prepared for that like,
- 10:10Speaker 4: it's not as though I can't explain it. But having
- 10:13Speaker 4: been through unfortunately now me four miscarriages that were quite
- 10:18Speaker 4: late term for two of them, there were things that
- 10:20Speaker 4: I was like, oh, I'm just feeling as though this
- 10:22Speaker 4: maybe isn't right, but you were there for something else.
- 10:25Speaker 4: And then they were like, by the way, oh the
- 10:28Speaker 4: fact that you didn't even go there is reduced movements
- 10:31Speaker 4: or I just I really feel like something's up. You
- 10:33Speaker 4: just got completely blindsided a girl. That is not fair.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I was told I had an interior placenter, so I
- 10:38Speaker 2: was told you won't feel much, So me not feeling
- 10:40Speaker 2: much was normal. So on the Saturday afternoon, I went, oh,
- 10:44Speaker 2: I felt a kick, And then the Sunday I went,
- 10:46Speaker 2: I haven't felt much. And you know, if you were
- 10:48Speaker 2: told not to don't worry, go in Monday afternoon for
- 10:51Speaker 2: a scan on my kidneys and my bladder because I
- 10:54Speaker 2: was crooked and that's when they found out. So this
- 10:57Speaker 2: is Monday afternoon.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Oh far, I'm so.
- 11:00Speaker 2: So we get up to the hospital this Monday afternoon.
- 11:04Speaker 2: My husband's just gotten back from thankfully driving back home
- 11:07Speaker 2: not to Sydney. Tell him, jump in the car up
- 11:11Speaker 2: to the hospital, get up to the hospital, and they
- 11:14Speaker 2: say you have to give birth. No, and I just
- 11:17Speaker 2: went okay. That's because I was not educated at all
- 11:20Speaker 2: about what happens when this happens.
- 11:22Speaker 4: But you don't know what you don't know, and in
- 11:24Speaker 4: the nice way, ever, it's kind of nice that you've
- 11:27Speaker 4: not had any experience of this.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Before, reflecting. All I got was a pamphlet sometime in
- 11:32Speaker 2: my pregnancy saying still birth might happen to you, and
- 11:35Speaker 2: that was it. So I get up to the hospital
- 11:38Speaker 2: and we're chatting through when I'm going to give birth,
- 11:40Speaker 2: and that's when I dropped that we get married that Saturday, yeap,
- 11:45Speaker 2: So we very quickly had to put a plan into place.
- 11:50Speaker 2: So that was the Monday night. I went back to
- 11:53Speaker 2: hospital the Wednesday and I gave birth to my beautiful
- 11:56Speaker 2: little girl.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Did you get to spend much time with her?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yes? Yeah, and she was the most beautiful little thing.
- 12:03Speaker 2: She's got a cutes little nose. So I spent some
- 12:06Speaker 2: time with her, and then I had to stay in
- 12:08Speaker 2: hospital until Friday. Of course, so my husband went, I
- 12:11Speaker 2: need to be busy, so he left and did all
- 12:13Speaker 2: the wedding stuff, so the marquee, portoloo, the food, the alcohol,
- 12:18Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. So he went kept himself
- 12:20Speaker 2: busy with.
- 12:21Speaker 4: That, honestly, fair Like, I get wanting to be busy,
- 12:24Speaker 4: but at the same time, I'm assuming every single person
- 12:27Speaker 4: going to your wedding knew that you were having a baby.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yes, we had kept the pregnancy quiet until twenty weeks. Yeah,
- 12:33Speaker 2: and then but everyone so that that's when all our
- 12:36Speaker 2: family on what the Tuesday, said are we coming up now?
- 12:39Speaker 2: And we said, no, leave us. We'll do this by ourselves.
- 12:41Speaker 2: And so we did all the giving birth by ourselves.
- 12:44Speaker 2: But friends popped around to the house to check on
- 12:47Speaker 2: the dogs, for example, because you just we just dropped
- 12:49Speaker 2: everything and ran and I just was told to rock
- 12:52Speaker 2: up to the wedding really in my dress, which is
- 12:54Speaker 2: what I did.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Stop and what is that like? Because like, you're marrying
- 12:58Speaker 4: the love of your life, right, you are the man,
- 13:01Speaker 4: I'm assuming of your dreams and that was like something
- 13:05Speaker 4: that you look forward to and I'm sure since you
- 13:08Speaker 4: were little, you're like, one day, I'm gonna have the
- 13:09Speaker 4: big light dress. I'm gonna have a wedding, and like
- 13:12Speaker 4: you guys were so excited to get married. It was
- 13:14Speaker 4: like September to November.
- 13:16Speaker 2: It was an eight weeks that I planned a wedding.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Yeah, hustling to get married, and like there was probably
- 13:21Speaker 4: I don't know, I feel like it's a little bit
- 13:22Speaker 4: romantic if you're pregnant and then getting married, because it's
- 13:25Speaker 4: just it's a love bubble. Like you're in this bubble
- 13:27Speaker 4: of like we're having a baby, we're getting married, We're
- 13:29Speaker 4: doing literally everything all at once. What's that like? Like
- 13:33Speaker 4: I'm going to cry like I did.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Oh, it was a rollercoaster. I think I had not
- 13:38Speaker 2: really been alone until I had an hour before I
- 13:40Speaker 2: had to get ready for the wedding, and I just
- 13:42Speaker 2: sat there and I just went what has happened over
- 13:46Speaker 2: the last week? And one of my cats had come
- 13:49Speaker 2: up to me and crawled up and noticed that the
- 13:52Speaker 2: like she used to crawl up on my tummy and
- 13:54Speaker 2: now she noticed there was nothing there, and that like
- 13:58Speaker 2: her look on her face and she's.
- 13:59Speaker 4: A cat, it's creepy.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Hey. Yeah, So yeah, I just kind of I drove
- 14:05Speaker 2: myself to hair and makeup and drove myself up to
- 14:07Speaker 2: the wedding, got changed at a friend's house around the corner,
- 14:10Speaker 2: and then walked down the aisle and we spoke to
- 14:14Speaker 2: our celebrant the day I was giving birth and told
- 14:17Speaker 2: her what was going on, and she was amazing. She's like, Okay,
- 14:20Speaker 2: what are we doing here? What do you want mentioned?
- 14:22Speaker 2: What do you don't want mentioned? So we kind of
- 14:24Speaker 2: started the day like, you know, we reflect on what's happened,
- 14:27Speaker 2: and because of what's happened, it shows how strong these
- 14:30Speaker 2: two love each other. And we associate my daughter with butterflies,
- 14:35Speaker 2: so you know, we talked about the butterflies that were
- 14:37Speaker 2: circling all that day stop.
- 14:39Speaker 4: And of course they were, and I bet they just
- 14:41Speaker 4: hung out the.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Whole day for no reall one hit me in the
- 14:44Speaker 2: face as I was getting photos done. Yeah. So then
- 14:47Speaker 2: we got married, and then then after that you then
- 14:50Speaker 2: sit down and go, Okay, what do you do. Now
- 14:52Speaker 2: we're married, and my husband had to go back into work.
- 14:56Speaker 2: You took a few more days off, it went straight
- 14:58Speaker 2: back into work. Was actually starting a new job as well,
- 15:01Speaker 2: which meant you would be home all the time, which
- 15:03Speaker 2: was great. But I remember also having to call my
- 15:06Speaker 2: work and explaining. I said, my daughter's been born sleeping
- 15:10Speaker 2: and my workplace said, what does that mean?
- 15:12Speaker 4: How do you guys not know what that means?
- 15:15Speaker 2: So that was really that was something to navigate, and
- 15:19Speaker 2: they didn't know what the options were. So thankfully now
- 15:25Speaker 2: we've been through all the options, they have all the
- 15:27Speaker 2: detail because I'm very strong about educating that this is
- 15:31Speaker 2: going to happen and for people to be prepared in
- 15:35Speaker 2: all shapes of life.
- 15:36Speaker 4: One hundred percent. So that happens, you obviously take some
- 15:41Speaker 4: time off work. Then what does life look like after that?
- 15:45Speaker 2: So in Australia, after twenty weeks or if a baby
- 15:49Speaker 2: is born over four hundred grands, it's classified as is
- 15:52Speaker 2: stillborn and therefore they get a birth certificate and you're
- 15:55Speaker 2: entitled to the government benefits. So I had two options,
- 15:59Speaker 2: which was the normal paid print or leave that every
- 16:02Speaker 2: parent can take, or a still born payout, which is
- 16:05Speaker 2: around four thousand dollars last time I checked, which is recently,
- 16:09Speaker 2: which for me was about a month's salary. And I
- 16:12Speaker 2: looked at it and I went, I don't think I
- 16:13Speaker 2: can just go back to work after Christmas. So I
- 16:17Speaker 2: decided to do the paid print or leave option, but
- 16:20Speaker 2: that just wasn't enough, So I ended up going back
- 16:23Speaker 2: to work two months earlier then I had hoped.
- 16:25Speaker 4: But you also probably had a bit more freedom and
- 16:28Speaker 4: flexibility than the fore grand payout. Is that right?
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I had the option. Like, my husband has made
- 16:34Speaker 2: me a very strong person, and he said, if you're
- 16:37Speaker 2: going to take time off, what are you going to do?
- 16:39Speaker 2: So I did put in effort to like going to
- 16:42Speaker 2: the gym and doing little bit for me, made sure
- 16:44Speaker 2: I did everything every day. I'm a very big tailor
- 16:46Speaker 2: Swift fan, so I spent a lot of time making
- 16:49Speaker 2: friendship bracelets because I wasn't going to get to go
- 16:52Speaker 2: to the ears too, because I was due exactly when
- 16:55Speaker 2: she was here. So when everything happened, my friends all
- 16:59Speaker 2: came to and I got to go thankfully six times.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Actually yes, oh my goodness, your friend came in clutch.
- 17:09Speaker 2: So I got to come down to Melbourne for three
- 17:12Speaker 2: shows and I went to Sydney for three shows, and
- 17:14Speaker 2: it's just the most it was the most healing thing
- 17:17Speaker 2: because I'm very big, swifty, seen her multiple times and
- 17:20Speaker 2: all my friends made me a bracelet with my daughter's name,
- 17:24Speaker 2: you stop. So this arm was full of bracelets with
- 17:27Speaker 2: her name, which was beautiful. So just it was a
- 17:32Speaker 2: very healing time. And then yeah, I actually fell pregnant
- 17:36Speaker 2: again just before I left for the ears to us stop, that's.
- 17:39Speaker 4: So special as well? What's that like? Like, what is
- 17:43Speaker 4: it like having gone through that and then finding out
- 17:48Speaker 4: you're pregnant again because you know again And I'm not
- 17:52Speaker 4: trying to make this about me. I think this is
- 17:54Speaker 4: definitely a completely different story. But like I am the
- 17:57Speaker 4: most anxious pregnant person ever because I I'm just not
- 18:00Speaker 4: good at staying pregnant, Like I've now lost four pregnancies,
- 18:05Speaker 4: and so being pregnant means that I'm quite anxious the
- 18:09Speaker 4: whole time. I'm like, this isn't going to work out,
- 18:11Speaker 4: This isn't going to work. But your situation mine mine
- 18:15Speaker 4: is nothing in comparison to yours, So like, how's that feel?
- 18:19Speaker 2: With my first daughter's pregnancy, I was very much like
- 18:21Speaker 2: testing every single day and had to see the line
- 18:24Speaker 2: get darker, and it got darker and I got darker,
- 18:26Speaker 2: and I paid for extra blood tests to make sure
- 18:29Speaker 2: the numbers were rising. But with my second daughter's pregnancy,
- 18:33Speaker 2: I don't know why, but I didn't. I kind of
- 18:35Speaker 2: got the positive blood test, I went, Okay, we're just
- 18:37Speaker 2: gonna sit. Obviously my experience is going to be different.
- 18:41Speaker 2: I had to start blood thinners immediately. I also was
- 18:45Speaker 2: up at the hospital at ten weeks, and where I
- 18:47Speaker 2: am usually don't go till twelve and then twenty weeks,
- 18:51Speaker 2: so I had continuity of care this pregnancy, which I
- 18:53Speaker 2: didn't have last pregnancy.
- 18:55Speaker 4: You're like, you just need that extra hand holding process.
- 18:58Speaker 2: I literally saw my and I'm in the public system.
- 19:01Speaker 2: We don't have a private option really where I live.
- 19:04Speaker 4: But the public system when you're a high risk pregnancy
- 19:07Speaker 4: is honestly like, I won't say flawless, but pretty flipping good.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Well. I was high risked with my first pregnancy too,
- 19:14Speaker 2: so it was just very different experiences. So when I
- 19:18Speaker 2: got to sixteen weeks and we did another skin they said,
- 19:21Speaker 2: it's now your choice. What do you want to do?
- 19:23Speaker 2: I decided to come fortnightly. Yeah. So because my first
- 19:28Speaker 2: daughters was growth restricted pretty much. Is what she's passed
- 19:31Speaker 2: away from is mount nourishment. Well, she was too small. Yeah,
- 19:35Speaker 2: my placenta was the issue. It was full of blood
- 19:38Speaker 2: clots and therefore stopped.
- 19:39Speaker 4: So you would have had to start aspirin really early off.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yes, that too. So my biggest thing was seeing her grow.
- 19:46Speaker 2: So every two weeks I wanted to see.
- 19:48Speaker 4: I want to see gain. I want to see her longer. Yeah,
- 19:50Speaker 4: I see her tracking on the graph.
- 19:53Speaker 2: And the irony is that she was a weak ahead.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Every single mum, mom stops stressing.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I got this. I had kicks all the time, but
- 20:02Speaker 2: it was still it was a very anxious time and
- 20:05Speaker 2: therefore we didn't announce my pregnancy at all. We kept
- 20:09Speaker 2: it to ourselves and close family and friends only. We
- 20:12Speaker 2: just dropped on Facebook after she was born an surprised guys, Hey,
- 20:16Speaker 2: we've had a child. So yeah, So I got induced
- 20:21Speaker 2: it thirty eight weeks, which is I really pushed for
- 20:23Speaker 2: because I just had physically had enough.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Honestly, fair like, I'm not gonna lie. I envy those
- 20:28Speaker 4: women who were like, pregnancy is so magical, it's the
- 20:31Speaker 4: best time, I really worshiped my body. Girl, I've never
- 20:35Speaker 4: felt worse in my life, like I trying to roll
- 20:37Speaker 4: over in bed, like I did not enjoy it. I
- 20:40Speaker 4: couldn't breathe, like I just felt like trash all the time.
- 20:44Speaker 4: I vomited on literally everything, like one out of ten
- 20:47Speaker 4: ye experience. I envy people, you know what. I say
- 20:49Speaker 4: this all the time to my girlfriends. I'm like, parenthood
- 20:52Speaker 4: absolutely for me, like I was born to be a mum.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Pregnancy though, that's not my journey.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I enjoyed it, but I was just as last ten weeks,
- 21:02Speaker 2: especially once I got past twenty seven weeks, it was
- 21:05Speaker 2: still just every week was like, is everything okay?
- 21:09Speaker 4: And even after that point, was her weight tracking well?
- 21:11Speaker 2: Yes, she came out at four point two kilos at
- 21:14Speaker 2: thirty eight weeks. She was well and truly.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Did not need those extra a few weeks.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Nope, No, So.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I love that. I love that so much. So tell
- 21:24Speaker 4: me a little bit more. I guess you said you
- 21:26Speaker 4: didn't go back to work. What do you do for
- 21:28Speaker 4: work and how much money do you earn?
- 21:30Speaker 2: So I'm now back in my job, which is an
- 21:33Speaker 2: executive assistant in local government. Oh, very cool and I'm
- 21:37Speaker 2: on eighty eight thousand plus Sooper.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Oh, hey, that's good. And does that like because it's
- 21:42Speaker 4: local government, does it increase every year? Is there like
- 21:45Speaker 4: a plan?
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you have like steps, so I'm I think I'm
- 21:48Speaker 2: at that last step now in my grade and we
- 21:51Speaker 2: get the like the CPI increase and stuff as well.
- 21:54Speaker 2: But at the moment, I'm just doing three days a
- 21:57Speaker 2: week with a transition to be back full time in
- 22:00Speaker 2: a few months. So tell me about your second daughter.
- 22:02Speaker 2: When was she born? How old is she now? So
- 22:05Speaker 2: she's seven months old.
- 22:06Speaker 4: It's not fit delicious, she is delicious.
- 22:09Speaker 2: She's got arms like a croissant.
- 22:10Speaker 4: I love that, my baby. So when Harvey was born,
- 22:13Speaker 4: he was like three and a half killers, which is
- 22:15Speaker 4: like bang on, like standard baby size. And then I
- 22:19Speaker 4: swear he ate a different baby and left the hospital
- 22:23Speaker 4: and he has been the chunkiest boy ever since. And
- 22:26Speaker 4: it is my favorite thing ever, the little chubby wrists.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Oh yeah, she's got those.
- 22:30Speaker 4: She's so cute. I love this. So talk to me
- 22:34Speaker 4: about money goals, Like you've bought the house, you've got
- 22:37Speaker 4: the pool, You've moved like I guess into state. What
- 22:40Speaker 4: is your big money goal? What are you guys working towards.
- 22:42Speaker 2: So in the midst of everything that happened, we also
- 22:45Speaker 2: sold our house. We went on this everyone, you guys okay,
- 22:48Speaker 2: because we sold a lot of stuff. We sold our
- 22:50Speaker 2: house and we moved another thirty minutes north and so
- 22:54Speaker 2: now we're on a property that's like half an acre
- 22:56Speaker 2: a lot quite at town. But this still isn't the forever.
- 23:00Speaker 2: So we're definitely starting to work towards getting some acreage
- 23:04Speaker 2: something like five to ten just to have some cows.
- 23:08Speaker 2: And my husband communities right on moer.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Oh my god, So tell me about that, because if
- 23:12Speaker 4: you're you've sold your house, you moved into this one,
- 23:15Speaker 4: and you're like on a little bit of land, are
- 23:17Speaker 4: you expecting that to increase in value and then move
- 23:21Speaker 4: or like, have you got like little plan?
- 23:23Speaker 2: We spoke at the beginning of the year and like,
- 23:24Speaker 2: do you want to do anything in twenty twenty five?
- 23:26Speaker 2: We said, no, let's just kind of settle into being
- 23:28Speaker 2: parents and all that kind of stuff, and let's just
- 23:31Speaker 2: keep smashing out our mortgage, which we are. So we've
- 23:35Speaker 2: paid nineteen thousand off the principal already in fourteen months.
- 23:41Speaker 2: The way we do it as well, is I've switched
- 23:43Speaker 2: to weekly repayments, but we also do forty dollars a
- 23:47Speaker 2: day we send over to our mortgage. Great, so that
- 23:50Speaker 2: we're doing something every single day because of the daily
- 23:52Speaker 2: interest rushing.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Downe that interest And for those of you who maybe
- 23:55Speaker 4: haven't deep dove into like what that actually means interest
- 24:00Speaker 4: calculated daily on your mortgage. So the end of the month,
- 24:03Speaker 4: they kind of go, oh, you have a thousand dollars
- 24:05Speaker 4: interest due. But if every single day you are cutting
- 24:08Speaker 4: that down, that at the end of the day means
- 24:10Speaker 4: at the end of the month, less interest is owed
- 24:13Speaker 4: and therefore more of the money that you've paid off
- 24:16Speaker 4: over that period of time actually goes to the real
- 24:19Speaker 4: loan instead of the interest that is payable. So that's
- 24:22Speaker 4: a really smart idea. Some of them do it that way,
- 24:24Speaker 4: some of them don't. So if someone's listening and they're like, oh,
- 24:27Speaker 4: I'm a good nurse, like money dires a genius, I'm
- 24:29Speaker 4: going to do it, don't just implement it, like have
- 24:31Speaker 4: a chat to your bank about what that actually means.
- 24:33Speaker 4: All you're broker about how to implement that. But money
- 24:36Speaker 4: dires that's quite smart.
- 24:37Speaker 2: We looked at it actually last night and we were
- 24:39Speaker 2: doing the math, and if we didn't put anything extra,
- 24:41Speaker 2: we'd only pay five hundred off the principle a month,
- 24:44Speaker 2: and that feels like nothing, but us doing it this
- 24:48Speaker 2: way is paying an extra fifteen hundred.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Dollars off stop. That's so significant. Have you calculated how
- 24:54Speaker 4: much time that will save you?
- 24:55Speaker 2: I think so far, we've already cut three years off
- 24:58Speaker 2: the loan.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Stop it, and you haven't even lived there that long.
- 25:00Speaker 2: We've only been here fourteen months in this house.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and you've cut three years off. So by the
- 25:04Speaker 4: time you guys move again, you'll probably be like twenty
- 25:08Speaker 4: year mortgage or something.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Hopefully.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Yeah, Oh my goodness. I love this for you. Do
- 25:13Speaker 4: you have any other big money goals that you're currently
- 25:15Speaker 4: working towards.
- 25:16Speaker 2: That's the main one, is really just finding the forever
- 25:18Speaker 2: home as nice and as quiet as it is here.
- 25:21Speaker 2: It's a I don't like the layout very much, and
- 25:24Speaker 2: it's obviously very cold, and we've got just fireplaces and
- 25:27Speaker 2: gas heating, and I'm like, I just want some doctor
- 25:29Speaker 2: their con and I'd love to go on a proper holiday.
- 25:33Speaker 2: We went on a honeymoon when I was eight weeks pregnant,
- 25:35Speaker 2: with my second daughter, and that was not a vibe.
- 25:39Speaker 2: And we're on a cruise, which was probably not the best.
- 25:42Speaker 4: To you, like, how can I make this pregnancy worse exactly?
- 25:47Speaker 2: And it was one day I went, am I sea
- 25:49Speaker 2: sick and my morning sick. I don't know, I'm just sick.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Oh No, Like, I'm not gonna lie the idea of
- 25:55Speaker 4: being pregnant on a cruise. Girl, you just really wanted
- 25:58Speaker 4: to watch it well burned.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I really I don't know what I was thinking. But anyway,
- 26:02Speaker 2: because we booked it before we felt pregnant, like I
- 26:04Speaker 2: think it was like in December, after everything happened. Really,
- 26:07Speaker 2: let's book our honeymoon.
- 26:08Speaker 4: What a great trip. And then you get pregnant. You're like,
- 26:10Speaker 4: I'm actually perpetually seasick, and now I'm going to get seasick.
- 26:14Speaker 4: This is perfect?
- 26:16Speaker 2: Is great?
- 26:16Speaker 4: Oh I love that pet, Money, Doris, So let's go
- 26:18Speaker 4: to a really quick break because I have a lot
- 26:20Speaker 4: more questions and we'll get to them in a hot minute.
- 26:26Speaker 4: All right, money Dorist, we are back, and I feel
- 26:28Speaker 4: like your priority is clearly smashing down your mortgage and
- 26:32Speaker 4: you are really good at it. But do you have
- 26:34Speaker 4: any investments? If so what are they? What do you
- 26:36Speaker 4: think about investing?
- 26:37Speaker 2: I am in the middle of a bulk listen of
- 26:41Speaker 2: the backlog of shares on the money, so I feel
- 26:43Speaker 2: like investing is definitely front of mine at the moment.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I have just started a SHARE's ease yeah great in
- 26:49Speaker 2: the last week. But outside of that, I have just
- 26:52Speaker 2: my SUPER at the moment and.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Working in local government, do you get more super than
- 26:57Speaker 4: the average, Beth?
- 26:57Speaker 2: I think it's twelve percent.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Yeah. And how's your super tracking? Are you happy with it?
- 27:01Speaker 4: Have you been looking at it?
- 27:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been checking it and I did notice a
- 27:05Speaker 2: little dip. Obviously, I haven't had super paid pretty much
- 27:08Speaker 2: all of this year yet because I've been on Central
- 27:10Speaker 2: Link since the beginning of the year.
- 27:12Speaker 4: How annoying because Sendlink has just updated to paying it
- 27:16Speaker 4: super as off July, so you just missed out on that.
- 27:19Speaker 4: I'm so sorry.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And I'm not planning on any more babies, so it
- 27:22Speaker 2: won't be any pregnancy is not for me anymore.
- 27:25Speaker 4: We are done.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I'm too and done. So I'm at sixty five thousand.
- 27:29Speaker 4: Oh my god. Okay, you're doing really well for your age.
- 27:32Speaker 2: When I looked back, is I've only been doing Super
- 27:34Speaker 2: for ten years, just because when I started, I was
- 27:36Speaker 2: late to the game. I didn't start working till I
- 27:38Speaker 2: was about eighteen because I had some big surgeries when
- 27:41Speaker 2: I was younger and I couldn't do much, So I
- 27:43Speaker 2: didn't start working until I was eighteen, and it really
- 27:47Speaker 2: with all the fees and stuff, I didn't really start
- 27:49Speaker 2: getting Super until twenty fifteen.
- 27:51Speaker 4: So, hey, look.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Sixty five over ten years, I'm pretty.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Happy, pretty well, even though it's tiny, that additional percentage
- 27:57Speaker 4: that gets paid, like it does pay off over time,
- 27:59Speaker 4: like it doesn't like a lot. You're okay, I guess
- 28:01Speaker 4: it's better than a kick in the pants. But then
- 28:03Speaker 4: you look at it after ten years and you're like, oh,
- 28:05Speaker 4: actually that did significantly contribute to my returns, which is
- 28:08Speaker 4: very very nice. Now talk to me. I need to
- 28:11Speaker 4: know more. You bought another house, but we have no
- 28:13Speaker 4: information on the debt that you carry. How much did
- 28:15Speaker 4: the house cost, how much is your mortgage? What does
- 28:17Speaker 4: all of that look like?
- 28:19Speaker 2: So the house we're in now we bought for five
- 28:21Speaker 2: hundred and sixty five thousand, and that's on half an acre,
- 28:24Speaker 2: four bedroom house. I'm so envs And we had a
- 28:29Speaker 2: ninety k deposit from the sale of our first house.
- 28:31Speaker 2: So we bought the house for four hundred thousand dollars
- 28:34Speaker 2: and eighteen months later we sold it for four hundred
- 28:37Speaker 2: and eighty two thousand dollars.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Very nice. And you guys had that forty thousand deposits,
- 28:41Speaker 4: so you basically flipped that in eighteen months to be
- 28:44Speaker 4: from forty to ninety.
- 28:45Speaker 2: And we added like an air con to it and
- 28:47Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. And then we now owe
- 28:51Speaker 2: four hundred and seventy five thousand on this house.
- 28:53Speaker 4: And how does that make you feel?
- 28:55Speaker 2: I think we're doing really well.
- 28:56Speaker 4: I think you're doing really well as well.
- 28:58Speaker 2: I'm pretty happy with it.
- 29:00Speaker 4: I'd prefer not though.
- 29:01Speaker 2: No, I'm still waiting for the day we win the
- 29:03Speaker 2: lotto because my husband wrote in his wedding vows that
- 29:05Speaker 2: we would.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Well call me when that happens, because I have a
- 29:08Speaker 4: few good financial advisors that are literally with stuff like that.
- 29:13Speaker 4: It's coming, so you'll need their details.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Right exactly exactly it's next week.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Do you have any other debts?
- 29:19Speaker 2: So at the moment, I have a credit card debt
- 29:21Speaker 2: of about eleven thousand dollars and it's not pretty, but
- 29:26Speaker 2: it just shows that you kind of need that little
- 29:29Speaker 2: bit of support, especially when on paid Printally, I was.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Going to ask, like, what's that made up of? Is
- 29:35Speaker 4: that going on paid parental leave? In your diary that
- 29:38Speaker 4: you wrote in you were like, I really want to
- 29:40Speaker 4: talk about, you know, the awareness of financial systems. Did
- 29:43Speaker 4: you win to debt after having your first daughter?
- 29:46Speaker 2: I think so. I think we did. I had to
- 29:48Speaker 2: cut back on a lot of things. I kind of
- 29:50Speaker 2: went I had about one thousand dollars a fortnight drop
- 29:54Speaker 2: going on to Centerlink. I got a couple of leave
- 29:57Speaker 2: options from work and I used those around orygment even
- 30:00Speaker 2: things like that, and then I went into Centerlink. So
- 30:04Speaker 2: we're at the point that we were selling our house
- 30:06Speaker 2: and the broker said, we're really sorry, we understand what
- 30:09Speaker 2: you've been through, but the banks don't count center Link
- 30:12Speaker 2: as an income, so right now you don't have an income,
- 30:15Speaker 2: so therefore we wouldn't have been allowed to borrow for
- 30:17Speaker 2: the house.
- 30:18Speaker 4: For in now, which actually makes me. I own a
- 30:20Speaker 4: mortgage broken company. So I see that stuff all the time,
- 30:23Speaker 4: and it makes me so angry because you could have
- 30:25Speaker 4: worked with the same company for ten years and then
- 30:27Speaker 4: taken parental leave and had a legit central ink income.
- 30:31Speaker 4: You could have been the most financially savvy person. You
- 30:33Speaker 4: could have saved for the last ten years to take
- 30:35Speaker 4: this period of time, so financially you're not behind, but
- 30:38Speaker 4: the banks like you have no money by It's not true,
- 30:41Speaker 4: but it's so frustrating. So what did you do to
- 30:43Speaker 4: get around that?
- 30:44Speaker 2: I went back to work early.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Oh, that's the last thing you needed. Was that really
- 30:48Speaker 4: painful to go back to work.
- 30:50Speaker 2: I wasn't ready to go back to work. I was
- 30:52Speaker 2: due to go back after six months, and I went
- 30:54Speaker 2: back after four and I feel like I probably needed
- 30:57Speaker 2: a little bit more time. But it's just the way
- 31:00Speaker 2: everything fell. And I believe everything happens for a reason.
- 31:03Speaker 2: So it's okay, but it was really disappointing that the
- 31:08Speaker 2: banks were just like, sorry that you've had a loss
- 31:11Speaker 2: and sorry that you're on Centerlink. They wanted proof of
- 31:14Speaker 2: savings that we couldn't. You know, it was tens of
- 31:17Speaker 2: thousands of dollars. It's just not there.
- 31:19Speaker 4: I'm so sorry. That part of it makes me so
- 31:22Speaker 4: angry because it's like, where's the leniency? Like anyway, I
- 31:26Speaker 4: won't go on and on about that, because I absolutely
- 31:28Speaker 4: could so I want to dive a little bit further
- 31:30Speaker 4: into this eleven thousand dollar credit card debt. Talk to
- 31:34Speaker 4: me about that. Is that something that gives you the eck?
- 31:35Speaker 4: Is that something that you're like, Nope, we did it
- 31:37Speaker 4: on purpose because you know, I have a seven month
- 31:39Speaker 4: old and we knew that we're going to be behind,
- 31:41Speaker 4: and this is a tool and we're just going to
- 31:42Speaker 4: smash it out later. Like what's the plan.
- 31:44Speaker 2: That's the plan is to start smashing it out as
- 31:46Speaker 2: my income increases going back to work. I've redone my
- 31:50Speaker 2: budget that I've been doing for years that haven't really followed.
- 31:53Speaker 2: It's been there on and off, but I've pulled it
- 31:55Speaker 2: back up and gone, no, no, I need to help
- 31:57Speaker 2: smash this out as well. So I'm changing. Like, it's
- 32:03Speaker 2: not really a percentage, it's just kind of working out. Okay,
- 32:06Speaker 2: there's going to be left over here that goes straight
- 32:07Speaker 2: onto the credit card. But it does kind of show
- 32:10Speaker 2: you that at the moment, sixteen hundred dollars a fortnight,
- 32:14Speaker 2: it is really hard to live on when you are
- 32:17Speaker 2: trying to do a mortgage.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Food.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I mean, thankfully she wasn't eating for a while, but
- 32:21Speaker 2: she's just started eating so adding in food, fuel, all
- 32:25Speaker 2: that kind of stuff, plus just enjoying your life.
- 32:27Speaker 4: So babies are just expensive, like nappy is expensive, and
- 32:31Speaker 4: they add up wipes and like, who knows you might
- 32:34Speaker 4: be using formula. I couldn't believe how expensive formula.
- 32:37Speaker 2: He's forty dollars a ten at the moment a week
- 32:40Speaker 2: for her.
- 32:40Speaker 4: That's the same as what Harvey was on. And it's
- 32:43Speaker 4: kind of like even if you look at the cheaper ones,
- 32:45Speaker 4: Harvey refused them. I tried to be like, oh, I
- 32:47Speaker 4: did all my research. I was literally on chat GPT
- 32:50Speaker 4: being like the national value of this versus this, because like,
- 32:54Speaker 4: you know, you don't want to do wrong by your kid.
- 32:56Speaker 4: I get that deeper one and he's like, what is this?
- 32:58Speaker 4: Absolutely not? And he also would not take anything less
- 33:02Speaker 4: than the bloody thirty dollars bottles, Like he refused.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I had to switch bottles. She didn't like
- 33:08Speaker 2: the bottles bottle.
- 33:09Speaker 4: He wasn't drinking out of it.
- 33:10Speaker 2: There was just ruda. I bought you this beautiful new bottle.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Not interested.
- 33:14Speaker 4: I tried to buy the Audi nappies because all of
- 33:16Speaker 4: the mum's on my Facebook group were like, oh the
- 33:18Speaker 4: Audi nappies are great, go and buy them, and I'm like, slay,
- 33:20Speaker 4: like ten out of ten for us. They leaked everywhere.
- 33:24Speaker 4: I was like, what is this? Why do I keep
- 33:27Speaker 4: trying my hardest and being picked?
- 33:30Speaker 2: It was just building up slowly. But it's just things
- 33:33Speaker 2: like you know, she grows so quickly, and next to it,
- 33:35Speaker 2: you're having to go buy the next size up and.
- 33:37Speaker 4: You want him to look through as well.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Like yeah, well, yes, she's a bow girl.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Yes. Honestly, it was a money win for me when
- 33:45Speaker 4: I gave birth to my son and they said it's
- 33:48Speaker 4: a boy. I remember on the first day, I thought
- 33:50Speaker 4: this is going to be great for our bank account
- 33:53Speaker 4: as opposed to me them like is that a dress?
- 33:55Speaker 2: Can I I'm just gonna go. Let me just have
- 33:57Speaker 2: a look at that.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I'm a boy mum. And still if I wire past
- 34:00Speaker 4: country Road and see the little girl outfits, I'm like.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Oh what is that?
- 34:04Speaker 4: That is the cutest thing ever. I can't look away.
- 34:06Speaker 4: If I had a little girl, I'd be done for.
- 34:08Speaker 4: I'd be canceled.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I'm starting to find a dress for a wedding we've
- 34:11Speaker 2: got to go to in a couple of months, and
- 34:13Speaker 2: it's just like, oh my gosh, she's only ever going
- 34:15Speaker 2: to wear it once. Oh, but it's so cute.
- 34:16Speaker 4: I'm on your team. Please any pictures because I live
- 34:19Speaker 4: vicariously through girl Mums money direst Talk to me. I
- 34:23Speaker 4: feel like, yes, you're in credit card debt, but I
- 34:26Speaker 4: feel like it was inevitable given the situation. Talk to me, though,
- 34:30Speaker 4: what do you think your best money habit.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Is definitely become a points queen.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Oh okay, I love your skip.
- 34:38Speaker 2: So that was the reason to get the credit card
- 34:40Speaker 2: in the first place. For things like I've switched to
- 34:43Speaker 2: shopping at Wally's to get the everyday rewards. We're flying
- 34:47Speaker 2: for this wedding interstate, so we've been like saving up
- 34:50Speaker 2: the points for that kind of stuff. But everything we
- 34:52Speaker 2: go to buy, we go can we get points somewhere
- 34:55Speaker 2: from this one year for flight? We just did all
- 34:58Speaker 2: fly bys one year and then that at Christmas with
- 35:00Speaker 2: eight hundred dollars in flybys points. So that was how
- 35:04Speaker 2: we went Christmas shopping.
- 35:05Speaker 4: Oh, your genius.
- 35:06Speaker 2: So we're very much into points.
- 35:08Speaker 4: People like, it's a dollar here, a dollar there. Yeah,
- 35:10Speaker 4: and over a year it becomes eight hundred bucks. It's
- 35:13Speaker 4: eight hundred dollars you didn't have before, isn't it.
- 35:15Speaker 2: So very much into points and just any way that
- 35:17Speaker 2: we can get some more points.
- 35:19Speaker 4: My team and I really like doing the like double stack.
- 35:22Speaker 4: We're doing the points, but then we're also making sure
- 35:24Speaker 4: that when we accumulating points, we're also using cash back,
- 35:27Speaker 4: so we're like shot back, cash rewards, literally any of it.
- 35:31Speaker 4: Who's giving the best discount or the best cash back,
- 35:33Speaker 4: we'll use that. And I would like some Flybys points
- 35:36Speaker 4: to boot thank you. I think I've been on shop
- 35:38Speaker 4: back for I want to say three or four years
- 35:41Speaker 4: now smart and it's sitting at four hundred and seventy dollars.
- 35:45Speaker 4: That's Christmas.
- 35:46Speaker 2: But like even I did a shop the other day
- 35:48Speaker 2: and I got twenty dollars back and it was like
- 35:51Speaker 2: a Bond's order or something for one hundred bucks. And
- 35:53Speaker 2: with I think it was only a few days ago,
- 35:55Speaker 2: so with their sales and everything and end of financial year,
- 35:58Speaker 2: I got twenty dollars cash.
- 35:59Speaker 4: Backe and that money just like stockpiles over in the side.
- 36:03Speaker 4: Then you'll have a couple of hundred bucks to make
- 36:05Speaker 4: a decision with money wien. That is a good deal
- 36:09Speaker 4: on the flip side though, tell me what do you
- 36:11Speaker 4: think your worst money? Howit is?
- 36:13Speaker 2: Food?
- 36:14Speaker 4: Yeah? Same girl? Are we eating out? Are we cooking
- 36:16Speaker 4: expensively at home? What does that look like?
- 36:19Speaker 2: Now? We're going through a drive through?
- 36:20Speaker 4: Because do you follow me on Instagram? By chance?
- 36:23Speaker 2: Yes?
- 36:23Speaker 4: Have you seen how many times I go through the
- 36:25Speaker 4: McDonald's drive through? You can't stop, won't stop.
- 36:28Speaker 2: I think as soon as I also was not pregnant,
- 36:30Speaker 2: it was like, give me the soft serves and the milkshakes.
- 36:32Speaker 4: That's fair.
- 36:33Speaker 2: And also, I mean you'd think living thirty minutes out
- 36:35Speaker 2: of town means that you don't have the temptation of
- 36:38Speaker 2: the drive through. Now every time I go to town, it's
- 36:42Speaker 2: on the way out of town.
- 36:43Speaker 4: So how do you say, notice some GPAs For.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Me, it's like a vanilla milkshakeh.
- 36:48Speaker 4: A vanilla milkshake?
- 36:49Speaker 2: Do you know what?
- 36:50Speaker 4: I don't think I've ever had a vanilla milkshake? Does
- 36:52Speaker 4: it just taste like soft serve?
- 36:54Speaker 2: Pretty much?
- 36:54Speaker 4: Okay, maybe I need one of those on the way home.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Just we're going to see that on the store tonight,
- 37:00Speaker 2: you will.
- 37:00Speaker 4: I'll be like the money dist today, not naming names.
- 37:05Speaker 2: So definitely, yeah, food and sometimes with concerts and stuff.
- 37:10Speaker 2: It's like I've got to be there. Not that I
- 37:12Speaker 2: go to many, especially even regionally. It's a whole thing
- 37:14Speaker 2: to go to a concert and.
- 37:15Speaker 4: Then back to Australia. I just know that credit card
- 37:19Speaker 4: would absolutely be slammed. I'm onto you.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Well, going back a little bit, I did that whole
- 37:23Speaker 2: tailor thing, six shows. I did all of that funder
- 37:26Speaker 2: two grand, which I'm pretty impressed, with a lot of
- 37:29Speaker 2: nose bleed seats. Yeah, so you're still there, which didn't matter.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I feel like it didn't matter how far back you where.
- 37:35Speaker 2: It was still the same vibe. I didn't sit on
- 37:36Speaker 2: the floor all but I sat probably every angle of
- 37:40Speaker 2: stadiums and didn't matter I was you were in the room.
- 37:42Speaker 2: It really didn't matter.
- 37:44Speaker 4: I love that for you so much. Is there any
- 37:46Speaker 4: other worse money habits to share? I feel like that's
- 37:49Speaker 4: probably sufficient.
- 37:50Speaker 2: I think so.
- 37:51Speaker 4: I feel like you're killing it though, Like you are
- 37:54Speaker 4: an EA in local government, which is really secure job
- 37:57Speaker 4: eighty eight grandy year plus super and it's good super.
- 38:00Speaker 4: You've been through a shitload and to only have eleven
- 38:03Speaker 4: grand of like credit card dead and also you're like
- 38:07Speaker 4: within the process of like upgrading your home at some point,
- 38:10Speaker 4: I feel like you're fine. Yes, that would probably be
- 38:13Speaker 4: stressful when you look at it at three am, because
- 38:15Speaker 4: we've all got blinkers on and that gives us anxiety. Right,
- 38:18Speaker 4: But I feel like in the big picture, like sometimes
- 38:21Speaker 4: when you have kids, we do financially have to take
- 38:24Speaker 4: a step back because it is hard, Like it is
- 38:27Speaker 4: not easy to go through that process and go you've
- 38:29Speaker 4: done it twice in the last few years, like two babies,
- 38:33Speaker 4: two periods of time where you've had time off, two
- 38:36Speaker 4: periods of time out of the workforce, Like that's stressful
- 38:39Speaker 4: and expensive. Then you said, look, I'm a SEA. But
- 38:42Speaker 4: then you're like, also, I'm a points queen, Like, girl,
- 38:45Speaker 4: get it together. Are you a points queen or are
- 38:47Speaker 4: you a C?
- 38:48Speaker 2: Maybe we'll bump up to a B.
- 38:49Speaker 4: I feel like a B is far more reasonable. Like, also,
- 38:53Speaker 4: it sounds like you and your husband are really savvy
- 38:56Speaker 4: when it comes to finances, Like you planned a wedding
- 38:58Speaker 4: in eight weeks with deer. Do you remember what you
- 39:01Speaker 4: spent on your wedding? Because I have a sneaky suspicion
- 39:03Speaker 4: it wasn't one hundred grand I.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Think we spent eight c She's sadly my dress cost
- 39:10Speaker 2: My husband's outfit costs more than me because he needed
- 39:12Speaker 2: new boots, new jeans, new shirt, new hat. I wore
- 39:15Speaker 2: the same boots I always have, and my dress was
- 39:18Speaker 2: I want to say, one hundred and sixty.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Dollars on my what that is money?
- 39:23Speaker 2: We and I'd bought it for my pregnant body because
- 39:26Speaker 2: I still and I still had a bump on my
- 39:27Speaker 2: wedding day because I hadn't gone. I think the most
- 39:30Speaker 2: of that eight grand was probably the celebrant and the alcohol,
- 39:34Speaker 2: and even that we had so much leftover.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And so did you guys cater I'm just so pervy.
- 39:38Speaker 4: Did you guys cater that like yourselves? Because you said
- 39:40Speaker 4: that it was at a friend's farm, right.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so my father in law, Owen's a butcher shop.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Okay, nice.
- 39:46Speaker 2: So we had literally the ovens, did all the meat everything.
- 39:49Speaker 2: So one of our friends did all the catering. We
- 39:52Speaker 2: just ran it on generators.
- 39:54Speaker 4: I'm a cea, but you're a genius. I love it.
- 39:56Speaker 4: I love it. I hope that in the future, when
- 39:58Speaker 4: you're back down for a future Taylor's with concept, we
- 40:01Speaker 4: get to run into each other in person, because I
- 40:03Speaker 4: just feel like you and I are going to get along,
- 40:05Speaker 4: Like I think that you are a queen, and I'm
- 40:08Speaker 4: just so excited to share your story at the same
- 40:10Speaker 4: time as just feeling like we need to be talking
- 40:13Speaker 4: about these topics so much more, like we shouldn't just
- 40:16Speaker 4: be sweeping them under the rug. Like I want to
- 40:18Speaker 4: know about your daughters, I want to know about what's
- 40:20Speaker 4: going on, but I also want to know how hard
- 40:22Speaker 4: it is financially when you go through those things, Like
- 40:26Speaker 4: I hate the idea that you had to go back
- 40:28Speaker 4: to work when you weren't ready, and I feel like
- 40:30Speaker 4: that's not like, oh, I had to go back to
- 40:32Speaker 4: work too, because my daughter had to go into day care,
- 40:35Speaker 4: Like it's a completely different story. Like mentally, physically, all
- 40:39Speaker 4: of those things, you were just not ready, And I
- 40:41Speaker 4: think that financially there should be so much more support
- 40:44Speaker 4: in that area.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Yeah, completely agree.
- 40:46Speaker 4: Thank you for sharing your story.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Thank you for being an avenue to be able to
- 40:49Speaker 2: share my story. I appreciate it.
- 40:51Speaker 4: Of course, of course, you guys are always safety at
- 40:54Speaker 4: Money Darst. It has been a pleasure. Thank you so much.
- 40:56Speaker 4: I know that the community is going to love hearing
- 40:58Speaker 4: from you as much as I've loved hanging out with
- 41:00Speaker 4: you today.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Thank you.
