- 0:02Speaker 1: Life audio. Today, I'll talk about that John passes the
- 0:07Speaker 1: class without ever opening the textbook and ponders whether he
- 0:10Speaker 1: used to preach too long. Meanwhile, I wonder if train
- 0:14Speaker 1: travel is really safe and tell you the story of
- 0:16Speaker 1: a gift from France that came unassembled and the strange
- 0:19Speaker 1: political path it took to become our symbol of freedom.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Plus a conversation about justice, greatness and the responsibility we
- 0:26Speaker 1: have to one another. Today's episode is not sponsored by
- 0:29Speaker 1: Boba t It's the most refreshing choking hazard, but first
- 0:33Speaker 1: award from our actual sponsor.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Well, buckle up, Buttercup, John and Johnny and talk about
- 0:44Speaker 2: that riding a little train on into Benttertown.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Toot toot, tute, a third toot that always gets you.
- 0:58Speaker 1: You still have been taking the big train ride that
- 0:59Speaker 1: you want to. Yeah, I think you've romanticized this cross
- 1:02Speaker 1: country train ride to yourself and then you're gonna be like,
- 1:05Speaker 1: I gotta get off this train. I think you're not
- 1:07Speaker 1: gonna like it.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I think it's an introverts dream. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:11Speaker 2: Can you find space?
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yeah? It sounds terrifying.
- 1:15Speaker 2: A little gentle noise in the background. You know what
- 1:18Speaker 2: I'm saying the room moves a little bit, maybe a derails.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Isn't it like the safest way to travel? I don't know.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I don't think that's true at all.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I think train travel is safer than car travel for sure.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Oh you go look it up.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Is train travel safer than car travel? I'm asking our friend, Siri.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Train travel is statistically safer than car travel, but not
- 1:44Speaker 1: safer than air travel? Are you kidding? Is train travels
- 1:48Speaker 1: safer than air travel? Train travel is kind of don't
- 1:52Speaker 1: It's tough to say. While trains are a safe mean
- 1:55Speaker 1: if transport planes are the safest way to travel. For
- 1:57Speaker 1: every billion kilometers travel, trains have a fatality that is
- 2:00Speaker 1: twelve times higher than that of air travel. At a
- 2:02Speaker 1: fatality rate for automobiles is sixty two times greater than
- 2:06Speaker 1: for air travel. So twelve times higher for trains than air,
- 2:12Speaker 1: but sixty two times higher for cars than air travel.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Farse fatalities.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but I want to say twelve times.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I feel like your data, you know, I think, Siri,
- 2:24Speaker 2: if there's one voice that's been lost in this technology.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Like you can't have a fender bender with a train,
- 2:30Speaker 1: Like if it derails is bad.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it's probably bad, That's what I mean. So there
- 2:34Speaker 2: is no like slowing down like oh no, oh.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Man, we came off the tracks.
- 2:38Speaker 2: But everybody good fine, Yeah, no, you're right. If it happens,
- 2:41Speaker 2: it's either catastrophic or nothing. Same with planes, though.
- 2:44Speaker 1: We started off in a dark place just from to
- 2:46Speaker 1: to two.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Don't you don't you feel like that Siri is now undervalued,
- 2:51Speaker 2: Like I don't ever talk to Sea. It's the first
- 2:52Speaker 2: time I've talked to Siri. Just right then, I'm talking
- 2:55Speaker 2: to Claude like crazy, you think Siri's little jealous? Maybe
- 2:59Speaker 2: sometimes Serrea will come on like I asked her a question.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I'm just giving in to like the dark forces of
- 3:03Speaker 1: AI like gonna come up.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I'll say something, Hey, Sadie and Cereal come up like
- 3:07Speaker 2: I wasn't talking to you and you can just see
- 3:09Speaker 2: it kind of like, oh, I'm sorry. I thought maybe
- 3:11Speaker 2: you wanted to ask me a question.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I don't know I was thinking today that or yesterday
- 3:17Speaker 1: I was thinking about this. Whenever somebody says there's a
- 3:20Speaker 1: few things that you say, it's always negative. Like if
- 3:22Speaker 1: somebody says, with all due respect, something's getting mad. Ever,
- 3:25Speaker 1: with due respect. Yeah, something's getting ready to go down.
- 3:28Speaker 1: But I was thinking of two that were very good,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and I'm probably gonna make a comedy bit about it.
- 3:33Speaker 1: One of them is nowadays, nobody ever says nowadays right
- 3:37Speaker 1: unless it's going to be bad. Right Nowadays, you kids,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and nowadays things are great, Like it's never you know,
- 3:46Speaker 1: that's good. It's like, nowadays you can't get a fish
- 3:48Speaker 1: stand which for less than three dollars. When I was
- 3:51Speaker 1: a kid, they were a nickel. They were giving them
- 3:53Speaker 1: out of the docks. I'm sure we all got dysentery, but.
- 3:57Speaker 2: The knocks full docks.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah. But and the other one is set foot. Okay,
- 4:03Speaker 1: you would never say, like, I'm so glad to set
- 4:05Speaker 1: foot in this restaurant. It's like I will never set foot.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Shoot, I can't think if.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You set foot in my house? Hey man, would you
- 4:14Speaker 1: come set foot in my house? On set foot? See
- 4:17Speaker 1: what happens? Set foot is a big one.
- 4:21Speaker 2: There's got to be more than There's got to be
- 4:22Speaker 2: a lot here.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a bunch. We need to figure out what
- 4:25Speaker 1: are the only negative phrases?
- 4:28Speaker 2: With all due respect for sure that one's been done.
- 4:30Speaker 2: People talk about that.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I think set foot is a good special time.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I want to know that imology of that. Now,
- 4:38Speaker 2: come on, hour, set foot, Come on, set foot.
- 4:41Speaker 1: It's been you could say, gosh, even if you say
- 4:45Speaker 1: it's been a while since you set foot in this church,
- 4:48Speaker 1: it's bad. It's bad. It's like you're you're being antagonistic
- 4:50Speaker 1: right off the bat well. Look who decided to set
- 4:53Speaker 1: foot in the church? Or darken the doorways is another one.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Look who dark darkness dark in our Doory's like, man,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I'm so glad, so glad you darkened our door. All
- 5:07Speaker 1: it means is cast a shadow. But darkening the doorway
- 5:09Speaker 1: sounds like you're bringing an ominous like you're bringing presence.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You are, it's getting bad. You darkened the whole doorway. Yeah,
- 5:16Speaker 1: it's like it couldn't be the little part of the
- 5:19Speaker 1: door that it is rough out here.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I have you know, I've been gone a lot
- 5:25Speaker 2: for volleyball.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And volleyball, man is all consuming.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I get that from people when I come back to church.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Well, look how the shot of the show.
- 5:33Speaker 2: It's a real like dude, we're almost like you, yeah,
- 5:37Speaker 2: are you going to deliver the sermon? Yeah? I am
- 5:39Speaker 2: actually there it's gonna be about you. Look, you don't
- 5:42Speaker 2: want to make the preacher mad right before it takes
- 5:44Speaker 2: the mic.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I want to ask a question of you later in
- 5:47Speaker 1: the show. So I'm gonna tease it right now because
- 5:48Speaker 1: we have some this week in history. Okay, Uh, that's
- 5:51Speaker 1: gonna be pertinent to sermons. So don't let me forget
- 5:54Speaker 1: to ask you the question.
- 5:55Speaker 2: No way, I forget that.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Okay. So in the radio, we call that a tease.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Ye.
- 5:59Speaker 1: In podcast animal, we don't. We don't call it anything
- 6:02Speaker 1: because nobody cares. Are listening at this at like two x.
- 6:06Speaker 1: You know, my wife listens to the show to come
- 6:09Speaker 1: up with help us compile the intros, and she doesn't,
- 6:12Speaker 1: you know, she does like a synopsis. She listens at
- 6:15Speaker 1: one point seventy five. One point five. That takes away
- 6:18Speaker 1: all the I think we speak too fast already, really,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and she's like no, she goes. When I slow it
- 6:24Speaker 1: down to regular speed, I feel like it's a dragging
- 6:26Speaker 1: and I'm.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Like good, But does she laugh at the jokes?
- 6:28Speaker 1: I don't know. Every now you get out here last.
- 6:30Speaker 2: She's just gone numb.
- 6:32Speaker 1: She's listening for content, she's listening for just.
- 6:35Speaker 2: My way stupid guy said this week, Yeah, ma'am god Curry,
- 6:39Speaker 2: but thanks for your help.
- 6:40Speaker 1: We lost Curry. It's a bummer. I mean, she's laughing
- 6:44Speaker 1: right now. Probably you think she laughs faster. She's listening
- 6:48Speaker 1: for her name. She listens at one point seven five.
- 6:51Speaker 1: She man laughs at one point seven five, responds quicker.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Remember her brain just works faster than ours. I wonder
- 6:56Speaker 1: if they're people who listen to podcasts a slow speed
- 6:59Speaker 1: because they have it down. O care, you can slow
- 7:01Speaker 1: it down. So I wonder if the people to do that.
- 7:02Speaker 2: They just want to go the longer they want.
- 7:04Speaker 1: They're listening for comprehension. Maybe they'll listen to a five
- 7:06Speaker 1: fast talker and they're like, I can't.
- 7:09Speaker 2: It's like I want to savor this.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You want to just yeah, let it just like my
- 7:12Speaker 1: lasses come on now.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah. I I listen to most things a little faster
- 7:22Speaker 2: if they're like a YouTube video and I need Like
- 7:24Speaker 2: Sadie's doing an online class this summer. She's she's moving
- 7:28Speaker 2: schools and it's a classical learning environment and they require Latin.
- 7:32Speaker 2: She don't take them. Two years of Spanish. Oh wow,
- 7:34Speaker 2: I mean she's almost fluent in Spanish.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Happens. Yeah, she could barely.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Speak Spanish, but yeah, so we're taking this so she
- 7:42Speaker 2: could have more like study hall time and stuff for
- 7:43Speaker 2: other things their senior year, and what we have all
- 7:48Speaker 2: this onboarding that she had to do.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I was like, look, I don't know what that is.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I was on boarding.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Well, it's an online school, so it's like, I don't know,
- 7:55Speaker 2: twenty five YouTube videos. Then here is how you set
- 7:59Speaker 2: your target date for the completion of the class. Because
- 8:01Speaker 2: it's asynchronous, meaning you don't think a teacher.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You do, like your preliminary information. They have to like
- 8:07Speaker 1: upload deal and here's where you go to. It's like
- 8:09Speaker 1: it's like it's a lot. It sounds like that's just
- 8:12Speaker 1: learning though that's not onboarding. It's like you need to
- 8:14Speaker 1: learn this stuff and you're calling it onboarding, Like you
- 8:17Speaker 1: got to go through this whole thing before I can
- 8:19Speaker 1: take this class and my daughter can learn this stupid
- 8:21Speaker 1: stuff so she can get more time and study hall,
- 8:23Speaker 1: do the stuff she really wants to do. Like it
- 8:25Speaker 1: seems like you hate education. This seems like you have
- 8:28Speaker 1: a real disdain. Quickly, I gotta get through this stupid
- 8:32Speaker 1: thing so she can learn Latin. It's a dead language,
- 8:35Speaker 1: like you're really like already bitter about the whole thing.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It was a lot and they call it on. So
- 8:39Speaker 1: maybe she can get into a college, maybe earn a living,
- 8:42Speaker 1: maybe make herself happy. And the world is swirling any
- 8:46Speaker 1: of despair surrounded by moments of false hope. But anyway,
- 8:49Speaker 1: we're onboarding. That's what it seemed, really. Man.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Well they had one part onboarding for the class and
- 8:54Speaker 2: the other part was orientation. Sure, that's a lot of stuff, Johnny, Okay,
- 8:59Speaker 2: I'm sorry, all right, listen.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Orientation sounds like you just have your paper upside down.
- 9:03Speaker 1: They go, let's turn these oh this reason. Okay, I'm
- 9:08Speaker 1: reoriented now.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but we do listen faster. Yeah, but you're right,
- 9:13Speaker 2: it is a.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You're not getting it, then, be honest with me. You're
- 9:15Speaker 1: not getting in at that speech. It depends like one
- 9:18Speaker 1: of them, one of them. I'll say this.
- 9:20Speaker 2: The teacher was walking through a web page and it
- 9:23Speaker 2: had all these extra tabs at the top, like here's it,
- 9:26Speaker 2: and she just she was obligated, yeah, to cover every
- 9:30Speaker 2: tab and there are tabs up there you're never going
- 9:32Speaker 2: to use.
- 9:33Speaker 1: It's kind of like it sounds like the people that
- 9:35Speaker 1: say you're never gonna use masks.
- 9:36Speaker 2: It's like, right now I'm looking at the top here
- 9:38Speaker 2: of garage band. It's got file, edit, track record mix.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I don't ever go to.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Mix right, you know what I'm saying, till you need it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: A Dane set this up ten years ago and good.
- 9:47Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Absolutely, Yeah, we didn't struggle with this. Right before we
- 9:49Speaker 1: hit record today, John was messing with it for thirty minutes.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I couldn't fund that. I don't know what it was doing.
- 9:54Speaker 1: It was mixed. You didn't know mix.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Dang it. It was right there a window. Whoever goes
- 9:58Speaker 2: to window, so there was was like she just covered
- 10:01Speaker 2: it each So yeah, almost speed that up to two
- 10:03Speaker 2: or two and a half.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I will say about education, I saw a great tweet
- 10:05Speaker 1: and you'll laugh, but it was some incredulous h Jen
- 10:10Speaker 1: Alpha person saying there's no way. Somebody said, my daughter
- 10:14Speaker 1: told me there's no way kids wrote ten page papers
- 10:17Speaker 1: without the help of AI, and he goes, sweetye, we
- 10:20Speaker 1: wrote ten page papers without reading the book.
- 10:26Speaker 2: And that's the legitimate truth. This is confession time.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I have a couple degrees from the University of Tennessee sure,
- 10:34Speaker 2: and there was at least one class. I vividly remember
- 10:38Speaker 2: that I did not take the book out of the
- 10:39Speaker 2: shrink wrap. You just, I don't know what I did.
- 10:43Speaker 2: You just we didn't have AI and I was I'm
- 10:47Speaker 2: adamantly opposed to cheating, Like, I don't like.
- 10:50Speaker 1: If you don't feel like not opening the book is disingenuous. No, No,
- 10:55Speaker 1: I thought I can get my way through this. Yeah,
- 10:57Speaker 1: I took good notes.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I think maybe I don't know what.
- 11:01Speaker 1: You kind of you've finagled what the professor was looking for.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Because often the textbook, look, there's an art to it,
- 11:07Speaker 1: But don't you read from the textbook together in the class.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I've never been to college. I don't know.
- 11:10Speaker 2: No, you know, often textbook is just a reference point
- 11:14Speaker 2: that like, here's where all the here's the here's the
- 11:19Speaker 2: most Oh, there's a great word of looking to hear.
- 11:21Speaker 2: The compendium of information is found in this book. Now
- 11:24Speaker 2: here's what I want to teach you today. And they
- 11:26Speaker 2: go to the board and they do their thing and
- 11:28Speaker 2: the lecture and you take good notes, and then it's
- 11:30Speaker 2: supposed to be supplemented. Some people, Yeah, they're all about
- 11:33Speaker 2: you read chapter three and four by next week. Okay,
- 11:35Speaker 2: but a lot of professors they're just they are using
- 11:39Speaker 2: that as it's just it's just there, and if you
- 11:42Speaker 2: they might add one question or something from it. So
- 11:44Speaker 2: it's kind of determining if the professor is a textbook
- 11:47Speaker 2: professor or not. If they're not, then dude.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Did you get any money for that shrink wrap textbook? Oh?
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I probably sold it back to the bookstore.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I don't spine. It's not even broken up. But no
- 11:57Speaker 1: matter what they.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Were thinking though, like, okay, how did this student like
- 12:02Speaker 2: we sell books since coming back? You?
- 12:03Speaker 1: Is this guy genius? See the stupidest man. I was
- 12:08Speaker 1: a real crammer. I was a crammer too. Well. I
- 12:12Speaker 1: had a good memory, and so yeah, I could. I
- 12:14Speaker 1: could compile some questions with in notes. I could underline
- 12:18Speaker 1: things and I would remember what i'd underline the next day.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I feel like I'd underline the answer and then I
- 12:22Speaker 1: would write what I think the question would be phrased, ask,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and I would make little little notes like that, well
- 12:28Speaker 1: you have a photograph of every well, it's not completely photographic.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I would say, it's close though, and it's it's definitely
- 12:34Speaker 1: it's failed me. It helps me in comedy some but sometimes,
- 12:37Speaker 1: like last night, I was trying to remember to do
- 12:38Speaker 1: a new bit and then I got up there and
- 12:40Speaker 1: then you just get in front of a crowd and
- 12:42Speaker 1: it all goes out the window. That's a little bit
- 12:43Speaker 1: different though. That's a stressful situation. But I did get
- 12:46Speaker 1: to do some new stuff. I will say that I
- 12:48Speaker 1: did some scooter material last night, so it's now, yeah,
- 12:52Speaker 1: it's kind of in the act now, so I'm trying
- 12:53Speaker 1: to That's what I was trying to figure out, because
- 12:55Speaker 1: I was doing it in front of the scooter crowds
- 12:57Speaker 1: as they're known, because you go make do these make
- 12:59Speaker 1: up a few scooter people, well, you know, you do
- 13:02Speaker 1: these makeup shows, and I thought, well, you guys are
- 13:05Speaker 1: owed to the story. Yeah, because I disenfranchised you and
- 13:08Speaker 1: my makeup shows, makeup shows, I have the shows you
- 13:10Speaker 1: were wearing makeup. Absolutely Yeah. No, I did the scooter
- 13:13Speaker 1: crash for those of you who don't know, And so
- 13:15Speaker 1: I missed like eight tour dates and so we made
- 13:17Speaker 1: up six of the eight. Two we're just canceled out right,
- 13:20Speaker 1: So I go and make up these six dates, and
- 13:22Speaker 1: you know, you just feel like these people held on
- 13:24Speaker 1: to their tickets, they're here, it's been a month. You
- 13:26Speaker 1: tell them what hapt's to tell them the story, and
- 13:28Speaker 1: let's work in some funny stories about it. And so
- 13:30Speaker 1: that's what we did. But then I thought, well, will
- 13:33Speaker 1: it now be material that can get laughs anywhere? Yeah,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and so last night was the first time I did that,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and it did. I had a couple of good wines.
- 13:42Speaker 1: I was a zanies.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Okay, the lab and so was this Johnny Wan Friends.
- 13:46Speaker 1: No, that's actually Johnny W and Friends. Thanks John for
- 13:49Speaker 1: that promotion. July first, get your tickets at Johnny w
- 13:53Speaker 1: dot com. Okay, you finished the first.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Round of Johnny wn Friends.
- 13:56Speaker 1: This is new, This is well. I mean, they're never
- 13:59Speaker 1: really John, It never ends n W until I have
- 14:03Speaker 1: no friends, which I mean that day, that day maybe
- 14:06Speaker 1: is gingerly on its way, John, You know us is
- 14:09Speaker 1: gingerly on its way. That ads from a few of
- 14:12Speaker 1: our fine spines. And let's take a minute and hear
- 14:14Speaker 1: from them. So you did the lab. You did the
- 14:27Speaker 1: lab and they went well. And I had did some
- 14:30Speaker 1: other things, just in a different order than I would
- 14:32Speaker 1: have normally done it. But I did find myself scramming
- 14:34Speaker 1: a little bit of like okay, And it was such
- 14:36Speaker 1: a good crowd too, that it would have been a
- 14:38Speaker 1: great spot to try a bunch of brand new things.
- 14:42Speaker 1: But I in that moment, I was like, oh, I
- 14:45Speaker 1: was last, I was closing the show, and so they
- 14:46Speaker 1: were a little tired too.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I just want them to laugh.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yeah, so you kind of give in a little bit
- 14:51Speaker 1: and then you feel you kind of kick yourself a
- 14:52Speaker 1: little aughterrack. Oh, this would have been a good spot
- 14:54Speaker 1: to do x y Z. But I did do a
- 14:56Speaker 1: bunch of the scooter stuff, which I was happy about,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and closed on a thing that I wouldn't normally close on.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But I was like, oh, this is a good spot
- 15:04Speaker 1: to get off. And then I got a big laugh,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and so I was like, Okay, well that shows that
- 15:07Speaker 1: that's now a closer. That's good. So you learn. Yeah,
- 15:10Speaker 1: that's the whole point. You just want to keep learning
- 15:13Speaker 1: what works.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Nah, I just cram, Yeah, I cram, and maybe don't
- 15:19Speaker 2: unwrap the book and even unwrapped the book. It's crazy
- 15:21Speaker 2: that I write books now, because you know how offensive
- 15:24Speaker 2: that was to the guy who wrote that book.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Somebody's got your book shrink wrap somewhere on the shelf
- 15:28Speaker 1: and they're just like, well, you said we had to
- 15:30Speaker 1: get this for a class.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You said something to me earlier before we started. You
- 15:33Speaker 2: said you were making fun of me. You were like,
- 15:36Speaker 2: that didn't sound like something like I care what it
- 15:38Speaker 2: was real demeaning. No, you were like, you know, you
- 15:41Speaker 2: got to go live life, you know, and not just
- 15:44Speaker 2: live a life worth writing about, is what you said?
- 15:46Speaker 1: Well, why why did I say?
- 15:47Speaker 2: They're talking about me going to youth camp maybe with
- 15:49Speaker 2: the kids. I was like, I'm probably not going. You're like,
- 15:51Speaker 2: you got to go live life with like and I
- 15:53Speaker 2: was like, wall, You're like.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I got all this stuff I got to get done.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, go to go work at a
- 15:58Speaker 1: camp though, that would be something.
- 15:59Speaker 2: But and I was like, I did live that life
- 16:01Speaker 2: for like fifteen years, and then I wrote a book
- 16:03Speaker 2: about it and we threw two thousand copies away in
- 16:05Speaker 2: the dumpster last year.
- 16:06Speaker 1: You know you didn't live that life. This would be
- 16:08Speaker 1: like you're going to help ride and cook and stuff.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I did a lot of that stuff. The kitchen all
- 16:14Speaker 2: the time.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Youth pastor goofing off, Hey kids, look at me.
- 16:20Speaker 2: I do miss that guy sometimes.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Man. PJ was something wasn't He was fun backwards hat
- 16:25Speaker 1: every now and again.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry, kids, because that's he's.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Gone backwards hat. John's con You know what I wear
- 16:32Speaker 1: as to protect your head from the sun. That's right,
- 16:34Speaker 1: it's very it's very utilitarian. Now.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I will wear a backwards hat if it's fitted. Sure,
- 16:39Speaker 2: I don't usually wear one that.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Has like the yeah, because you'll get sunburned. There.
- 16:44Speaker 2: You get to exclaiming that is always the look of it, Johnny.
- 16:46Speaker 1: That's true. That is a different look. Yeah, that does
- 16:49Speaker 1: feel different. Backwards hat. Yeah, it's like a little window
- 16:54Speaker 1: that says something happens in that little half moon where
- 16:58Speaker 1: you become a different dude. Hey, look at my forehead.
- 17:00Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. It's very If you're embarrassed
- 17:03Speaker 2: about your forehead, you don't want to wear a hat
- 17:04Speaker 2: like that because it is really shining spotlight that is
- 17:09Speaker 2: dealing with real issues here, which reminds me, Johnny, I
- 17:11Speaker 2: think it's my time to do my segment.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Issues we call it.
- 17:14Speaker 4: They talked about that.
- 17:27Speaker 1: That was pitchy. M really pitchy.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I use this in my sermon someday. I was starting
- 17:32Speaker 2: a new series called Disclosure Day.
- 17:35Speaker 1: No. I was trying to think of like the The
- 17:37Speaker 1: Hip summer series arch Angel No, you know, like anything
- 17:42Speaker 1: that's like at the movies. Yeah, like, oh yeah, God
- 17:45Speaker 1: wants to disclose something to you today.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Are aliens real? I'm not sure, but let me you
- 17:51Speaker 2: know who is?
- 17:52Speaker 1: You know, who did come down from far away?
- 17:56Speaker 2: Any you know unidentified faith object is right, some of
- 18:02Speaker 2: you only identify faith.
- 18:05Speaker 1: That's going to be a thing that already is happening.
- 18:07Speaker 1: We're giving people that like writing all the downs.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Chat okay, go ahead that East Stanley Jones. Anyway, a
- 18:15Speaker 2: new series was on. We're doing six weeks on justice
- 18:19Speaker 2: in the Proverbs, Okay. Really was inspired by Tim keller
- 18:26Speaker 2: devotional where he does a whole series out of Proverbs
- 18:29Speaker 2: on justice and poverty and affecting your world and and
- 18:35Speaker 2: a lot of it's about it was about. This is
- 18:39Speaker 2: the part that really got me for Sunday I was
- 18:41Speaker 2: so excited to share was in the original Hebrew when
- 18:44Speaker 2: it talks about defending the rights of the needy. He
- 18:47Speaker 2: says that the way that word, that that original word
- 18:51Speaker 2: indicates that your neighbor has a claim on you, that
- 18:56Speaker 2: that they come to like you.
- 18:58Speaker 1: You.
- 18:58Speaker 2: You don't enter the world with this independence in the
- 19:03Speaker 2: way that we think of it. But if you follow
- 19:07Speaker 2: the ways of Christ, then your neighbors have a claim
- 19:10Speaker 2: on you and sore. And a lot of the ancients
- 19:13Speaker 2: wrote about this, and I used several of their quotes,
- 19:16Speaker 2: and they were talking about the things in your closet
- 19:20Speaker 2: that you're not using, those are actually supposed to belong
- 19:23Speaker 2: to the poor, and that even one of the quotes
- 19:26Speaker 2: talks about how when you give something, it's not really
- 19:32Speaker 2: an act of charity or an act of mercy. It's
- 19:34Speaker 2: more an act of justice because you're doing what you
- 19:39Speaker 2: were supposed to do. That's justice for them just by
- 19:42Speaker 2: your giving. It's really interesting ideas because it it butts
- 19:46Speaker 2: up so much against our independent spirit. No one has
- 19:49Speaker 2: a claim on me. I don't know you anything, especially
- 19:51Speaker 2: if you don't deserve it, all those kinds of things.
- 19:54Speaker 2: But in Christ it's different anyway. And I kind of
- 19:55Speaker 2: close with this quote from eas Stanley Jones, who was
- 19:58Speaker 2: born in eighteen eighty four, from his book This Victorious Living.
- 20:02Speaker 2: He said, we grow small trying to be great. We
- 20:07Speaker 2: toil in rowing, trying to get to the land of greatness,
- 20:10Speaker 2: and we end nowhere. Then Jesus comes again. We fear
- 20:15Speaker 2: him for we fear he will ask us to be
- 20:17Speaker 2: servant of all in order to be great, and we
- 20:20Speaker 2: do not want to serve, we want to be served.
- 20:23Speaker 2: But still he comes. Then we let him in. We
- 20:27Speaker 2: forget greatness as we bend with him to serve the rest.
- 20:31Speaker 2: And lo as we bend we rise. The servant of
- 20:35Speaker 2: all becomes the greatest of all. We have arrived. I
- 20:39Speaker 2: love this.
- 20:40Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 20:41Speaker 2: So it's so good. But we grow small trying to
- 20:45Speaker 2: be great, you know. And I did talk about some
- 20:48Speaker 2: things Sunday. It was one of those It's one of
- 20:53Speaker 2: those things where I was like, guys, just this very topic,
- 20:55Speaker 2: someone's gonna think this as woke, or someone's gonna think
- 20:57Speaker 2: so I just I just hit it a little more directly,
- 20:59Speaker 2: like like I'm worried. I'm worried that you're going to
- 21:01Speaker 2: think if I talk about things like this and I'm
- 21:03Speaker 2: quote unquote that pastor who's the social justice warrior, or
- 21:07Speaker 2: you're gonna think I'm woke or liberal or communist or
- 21:10Speaker 2: socialist or both and you don't know the difference between
- 21:12Speaker 2: them both or I mean, you can name a million
- 21:14Speaker 2: this is going to be about de I or CRT
- 21:17Speaker 2: or some other thing that changes all the time. That
- 21:20Speaker 2: just what it does is it allows you just to
- 21:22Speaker 2: put me into some other category. And so I really
- 21:24Speaker 2: tried to. I put a test in there. I was like, look,
- 21:27Speaker 2: we're gonna read this scripture today. It was from Proverbs
- 21:30Speaker 2: thirty one, and it talked about speaking up for those
- 21:33Speaker 2: who cannot speak for themselves and bringing justice for the
- 21:37Speaker 2: destitute and the poor, and you know, basically this it's
- 21:40Speaker 2: replete throughout the scripture.
- 21:42Speaker 1: And I was like, so, so here's here's the test.
- 21:44Speaker 2: You know, at the end, it is like and they
- 21:46Speaker 2: really went with me, well, like they listened to not
- 21:48Speaker 2: think I was able to kind of be vulnerable with
- 21:51Speaker 2: them about hey, here are the here are the hurdles
- 21:56Speaker 2: to this of trying to talk about but this is
- 21:58Speaker 2: in the scriptures, and it's many times in the script
- 22:00Speaker 2: and so I was like, well, number one, what scripture
- 22:03Speaker 2: am I offended by?
- 22:05Speaker 1: You know?
- 22:05Speaker 2: It was like that's a trick question, because no one
- 22:07Speaker 2: in this room today is going to go I'm offended
- 22:09Speaker 2: by a scripture. It's like, it's not that the scripture
- 22:10Speaker 2: I'm offended by, right, Okay, if you're not offended by
- 22:14Speaker 2: the scripture, then Number two, how did the guys, maybe
- 22:17Speaker 2: it's the guy speaking the scripture, how did he or
- 22:20Speaker 2: she take it out of context or misapply it? Like
- 22:25Speaker 2: maybe I did, like, hey, you're supposed to test this.
- 22:27Speaker 2: You're supposed to test everything that I say. You really
- 22:30Speaker 2: really are. I encourage you. I invite you please do
- 22:32Speaker 2: that every week, regardless to the topic. Well, if it
- 22:35Speaker 2: passes that test, then then number three, Okay, if it
- 22:38Speaker 2: was not as that person applied it, then what other
- 22:42Speaker 2: application could it be? And I think that's a big one.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Oh that's not what that means. Okay, if not? And
- 22:49Speaker 2: I went through whether it's we talk about COSA here,
- 22:52Speaker 2: which is court appointed special advocates, you know, people adult
- 22:55Speaker 2: who go and help advocate for either orphans or foster
- 22:59Speaker 2: children or those in the system because their parents are
- 23:03Speaker 2: are on trial or going to jail need someone to
- 23:07Speaker 2: speak up for them. And that's like, that's an easy one,
- 23:09Speaker 2: Like we can all go, that's good, right. We can
- 23:13Speaker 2: talk about, you know, helping in sex trafficking and helping
- 23:16Speaker 2: you know, battered women and abuse children and all those things.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I was like, you know, but the scriptures gets way
- 23:22Speaker 2: more broad than just that. Please do those that's great,
- 23:25Speaker 2: but it gets into you know, it talks about ancient
- 23:29Speaker 2: boundary marks and not cheating people in court. In fact,
- 23:32Speaker 2: that the one of the scriptures I read talked about court.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I was like, now, if I said court or the law,
- 23:36Speaker 2: which is what the scripture just said, You're gonna think
- 23:37Speaker 2: I'm getting political or that's not what we should be
- 23:40Speaker 2: talking about in church churches for spiritual things. I was like, so,
- 23:42Speaker 2: what do you do if not, if the scripture can't
- 23:45Speaker 2: be applied in the way that I'm saying that we're
- 23:48Speaker 2: actually supposed to care today about how people are treated
- 23:51Speaker 2: in court because we all know the lagger you can
- 23:53Speaker 2: afford and those kinds of things, and the law could
- 23:55Speaker 2: be so complicated that it doesn't necessarily work the same
- 23:58Speaker 2: for everybody. We know that to be true. And so
- 24:00Speaker 2: the scriptures say those of us who can are supposed
- 24:03Speaker 2: to help those who can't when that when that system
- 24:05Speaker 2: hurts them. So if not that, if not applying to that,
- 24:08Speaker 2: what other application is there?
- 24:09Speaker 1: It's gonna be.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Hard to spiritualize this application, you know.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And if you come to.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Those three tests and you're still kind of offended, I
- 24:15Speaker 2: was like, that's great news. It sounds like bad news.
- 24:18Speaker 2: But the great news is the Gospel is supposed to
- 24:20Speaker 2: offend you because now it can lead you to see
- 24:23Speaker 2: where you are and where we're all supposed to change
- 24:25Speaker 2: and grow. So and that's why I ended on this idea,
- 24:28Speaker 2: and I'm just gonna call it out a little more.
- 24:30Speaker 2: But there's a lot of talk about America what makes
- 24:32Speaker 2: it great today? You know, there's just a lot. And
- 24:35Speaker 2: we're talking about the two fiftieth and all the things
- 24:37Speaker 2: I didn't do this Sunday, But there's a lot about
- 24:39Speaker 2: what it means as a person to be great and
- 24:42Speaker 2: how I'm greater than this person or that, and often
- 24:44Speaker 2: that has to do with power and money, has to
- 24:46Speaker 2: do with where you come from, how you look, how
- 24:49Speaker 2: you speak, all those kinds of things. And there's just
- 24:51Speaker 2: a grand debate, and I think, I think again Jones
- 24:53Speaker 2: kind of breaks it down. Jesus does too. Reminds me
- 24:57Speaker 2: of what Jeremiah said to Baruch in Jared Amaya. You
- 25:00Speaker 2: know where God says actually to Breuke. You know that
- 25:05Speaker 2: you are trying to seek When you try to seek
- 25:07Speaker 2: great things, seek them not because you grow small, trying
- 25:11Speaker 2: to be great and man. Instead, if we let Jesus
- 25:14Speaker 2: in He's gonna lead us to become the servant of all,
- 25:17Speaker 2: which will make true greatness as we lose our life,
- 25:20Speaker 2: as he lost his life in service to others. So anyway,
- 25:23Speaker 2: there you go, Johnny, that's East Stanley Jones.
- 25:25Speaker 1: That's good stuff. I like it. Let's do my segments, John.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Let's start with old jokes. We call it. Joke about that. John.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Did you hear about the guy who collapsed trying to
- 25:40Speaker 1: climb Mount Everest? Yes, authorities found him Malayan there. Sorry,
- 25:52Speaker 1: that's a good I know it's a dad joke. But
- 25:54Speaker 1: I read it and it made me laugh, and I thought,
- 25:56Speaker 1: you know what I'm including today because I don't care
- 25:59Speaker 1: him Alayan himla in there. That's didn't say he died,
- 26:03Speaker 1: it had collapsed, So I like that could be okay.
- 26:05Speaker 1: So I heard many.
- 26:06Speaker 2: People collapsing about that.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Yuh speaking of school and cheating, John, because we were
- 26:10Speaker 1: talking about this earlier and your horrible history of not
- 26:14Speaker 1: even opening books. That wasn't what I always did. By
- 26:16Speaker 1: the way, just four roommates party the night before big exam.
- 26:19Speaker 1: They missed the test. They agree on a story together.
- 26:23Speaker 1: They go with this story that they got a flat
- 26:25Speaker 1: tire on their way to take the exam. They beg
- 26:27Speaker 1: for the chance to make up the exam. The professor agrees.
- 26:31Speaker 1: On the day of the makeup test, all four students
- 26:32Speaker 1: show up right on time. The professor looks at his
- 26:34Speaker 1: watch and says, begin students open their exam books, and
- 26:37Speaker 1: there's only one question, which tire went flat. Yeah, if
- 26:40Speaker 1: you heard them, that's a great joke. That's great. That
- 26:43Speaker 1: probably that's one of those like that may barely happen.
- 26:46Speaker 1: That's what I would sounds It sounds like one of
- 26:47Speaker 1: those professor's jokes that they tell each other. Yeah, did
- 26:51Speaker 1: that really help? Yeah, Dave did that years ago. He
- 26:54Speaker 1: dropped his chalk and anyway, legend John. Finally, two caterpillars.
- 26:59Speaker 1: This is true. Two caterpillars are fleeing from a spider
- 27:03Speaker 1: tails old as time.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 1: They climb up a small branch and crawl to the edge,
- 27:07Speaker 1: but realize they're trapped. Hold on tight, says the first caterpillar,
- 27:10Speaker 1: and he quickly chews through the branch. It snaps in two.
- 27:13Speaker 1: As they begin to fall, he grabs two protruding twigs
- 27:17Speaker 1: and steers the branch through the air with grace and finesse.
- 27:20Speaker 1: This is amazing, says the second caterpillar. How the heck
- 27:23Speaker 1: are you doing? That first caterpillar is coughs am, I
- 27:25Speaker 1: the only one in this whole forest who knows how
- 27:27Speaker 1: to drive a stick. I did not see that one.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Say come on, now, it's good. That's a that's a
- 27:34Speaker 1: true story, that really happened. John. Let's do this week
- 27:38Speaker 1: in history to close the show, we call it talk
- 27:40Speaker 1: about then John. This Week eighteen thirty eight, John Quincy
- 27:49Speaker 1: Adams began a three week long filibuster speech before Congress
- 27:53Speaker 1: on right of petition and freedom of speech. His speech
- 27:56Speaker 1: lasted until July seventh, Are you us? President? Adams, who
- 28:02Speaker 1: was now a member of the House of Representatives, gave
- 28:04Speaker 1: it in response to a resolution to annex Texas, which
- 28:08Speaker 1: he was trying to defeat. He's plan worked, and Texas
- 28:11Speaker 1: formally withdrew its offer of annexation in October. Texas was
- 28:14Speaker 1: eventually admitted to the Union in eighteen forty five. And
- 28:18Speaker 1: it got me thinking, you know, people talk about the
- 28:20Speaker 1: philibuster good for good or bad and all that, and uh,
- 28:24Speaker 1: there's a famous scene and mister Smith goes to Washington
- 28:26Speaker 1: when he philibusters until he's exhausted. And I don't know
- 28:30Speaker 1: enough about history to know like it's true usage and
- 28:32Speaker 1: all that stuff. But I was thinking about, how, what's
- 28:36Speaker 1: the longest time you've ever preached? Because now you know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: people like now you guys like we know, people's attention
- 28:45Speaker 1: spans just aren't there, and so it's not the same thing.
- 28:46Speaker 1: When we were growing up. I remember people would almost
- 28:48Speaker 1: practical church was five hours today or church was three
- 28:51Speaker 1: hours today. But I wonder, what's the longest you ever
- 28:55Speaker 1: preached then, you know of because probably you got to
- 28:57Speaker 1: be fighting. Well that was about right, And then Laura
- 28:59Speaker 1: was like what a world and all that.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I think I've gone over an hour before. I mean,
- 29:07Speaker 2: but that was back in the old day.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I remember I can remember sermons you did that were
- 29:10Speaker 1: longer than an hour. Wow, I really can't, okay, just
- 29:13Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I mean youth sermons. This is
- 29:16Speaker 1: that's really saying something.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but the kids were that's the thing.
- 29:19Speaker 1: But then then act like kids were different than they
- 29:22Speaker 1: were different than well they didn't have phones. Maybe that's true.
- 29:24Speaker 1: They probably flip phones.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Listen, I my wife's gonna ooh, she's gonna eat this alive.
- 29:31Speaker 2: She's gonna love it.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I've done a lot of therapy, and I know
- 29:38Speaker 2: it's it's an internal message.
- 29:40Speaker 1: This feels like therapy.
- 29:40Speaker 2: I struggle with like I know them a lot. I
- 29:43Speaker 2: know I'm a lot. Yeah, I'm a lot for everybody
- 29:46Speaker 2: into it. So that translated in my early days, especially
- 29:49Speaker 2: into longer sermons, because I'll tell you why, I feel
- 29:52Speaker 2: like I have to say everything on the topic that
- 29:54Speaker 2: has to be said or else I fail at it.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I have to cover all the things that could be wrong. Yeah,
- 29:59Speaker 1: every question, every yeah, antagonistic statement, yeah, every rebuttal like
- 30:05Speaker 1: it all has to be right. So anyway, I apologized.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Paul wrote that way too, but I'd say he did
- 30:10Speaker 1: that because he was in jail, and it's like he
- 30:12Speaker 1: had to anticipate question.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Paul does everybody loves it? John does it? And we're talking.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't think. I don't know if
- 30:18Speaker 1: Paul was all that popular.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I do have fat Did I say this
- 30:23Speaker 2: in the podcast? I can't remember. But my my biggest
- 30:26Speaker 2: issue with the New Testament probably is Paul and Barnamas
- 30:31Speaker 2: splitting ways. Barnabas because Barnabas, Yeah, because if you can't
- 30:36Speaker 2: get along with a guy whose nickname is the son
- 30:38Speaker 2: of the Courage. We did, we did talk about okay, good, Yeah,
- 30:40Speaker 2: I struggle. Maybe you're right that Paul was he was
- 30:43Speaker 2: a lot? Yeah it, but what if again? What if
- 30:48Speaker 2: I'm a lot? After I die my writings they're like,
- 30:52Speaker 2: you know that guy knew something.
- 30:54Speaker 1: I got a good feeling.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Yeah, let's go on that dumpster.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Let's find that shrink wrapped book that we have any
- 31:00Speaker 1: and cracked the spine of It's worth something here. I
- 31:03Speaker 1: don't know, man, that could be, it could be. I
- 31:06Speaker 1: don't know anyway. Yeah, I was just so over an hour.
- 31:08Speaker 1: That's I take lowball a long time. So what is
- 31:12Speaker 1: it now?
- 31:13Speaker 2: Thirty forty it's thirty five to forty yearsly. I think
- 31:16Speaker 2: I did forty five Sunday, But that's prayer. Everything clocked
- 31:21Speaker 2: out after fifteen it was, but there was again. I
- 31:24Speaker 2: still am a teacher. I still I still teach.
- 31:27Speaker 1: So put your filibusterings what you're doing? Yeah, John this
- 31:30Speaker 1: week nineteen oh three. The Pepsi color trademark is registered
- 31:34Speaker 1: with the US Patent Office. Pepsi was created in eighteen
- 31:37Speaker 1: ninety three by pharmacist Caleb Bradham and sold in his
- 31:41Speaker 1: New bern, North Carolina drug store as Brad's Drink. That's
- 31:45Speaker 1: a good change, yeah, another pharmacist. So I think, what
- 31:50Speaker 1: do we do all research on coca cola. It was
- 31:51Speaker 1: kind of an elixir, yeah, all started that way and
- 31:56Speaker 1: diggestive properties all. Yeah. It was renamed Pepsi cola in
- 32:00Speaker 1: eighteen ninety eight because it was advertised to relieve dyspepsia
- 32:03Speaker 1: or indigestion and cola due to its cola flavor. So
- 32:07Speaker 1: that's kind of that's what it says. I'll swear toy.
- 32:08Speaker 1: That's what it was called cola because it was flavored.
- 32:11Speaker 1: It is cold. It was a cola. The name was
- 32:16Speaker 1: shortened to pepsi in nineteen sixty one. The original formula
- 32:18Speaker 1: did not include pepsin, as is often believe, so some
- 32:22Speaker 1: people believe it had pepsin in it, which I guess
- 32:26Speaker 1: pepsid Ac gets its name from that, probably pepsin.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Do you think cokes help with your digestion?
- 32:33Speaker 1: I don't know, but it lets me drink more cokes,
- 32:36Speaker 1: So whenever you feel like give me another, keep them coming.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I don't. It's eating a hole in my the lining
- 32:43Speaker 1: of my stomach probably like keep them coming. Yeah, I
- 32:47Speaker 1: mean there is something about like the syrup, like they
- 32:51Speaker 1: used to sell just the syrup for Cola as a
- 32:54Speaker 1: digestive aid in drug stores, and so there's something to
- 32:58Speaker 1: that great sugar.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I guess I.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Thought the coat something to coach your stomach. Maybe I
- 33:05Speaker 1: don't know. I think your stomach already has a coating. Yeah,
- 33:07Speaker 1: it was put there by the Lord or like washing
- 33:11Speaker 1: it away with soda, being like this will help. Yeah,
- 33:15Speaker 1: what you need is some kidney stoms.
- 33:18Speaker 2: But the way, I did see an article that reminded
- 33:19Speaker 2: me of you the other day. Okay, I got about
- 33:21Speaker 2: all the wars between the diet coke people and the
- 33:23Speaker 2: Coke zero people. Did I send it to you? No,
- 33:26Speaker 2: it's like a big deal. Yeah, And uh it was
- 33:29Speaker 2: like in the Wall Street Girl, it's heightening. It's a
- 33:31Speaker 2: I was like, hey, this is I mean, this whole
- 33:33Speaker 2: Democratic Republican thing's bad. But bro, it's going to be
- 33:36Speaker 2: Corovers's diet code.
- 33:37Speaker 1: There will be wars and rumors of wars.
- 33:39Speaker 2: We've heard about it, and there kids was turned to Cola.
- 33:43Speaker 1: We didn't know it was. Yeah, we didn't know all
- 33:45Speaker 1: about that. John this week. Uh, stan Laurel was born
- 33:50Speaker 1: in eighteen ninety then know who Stan Laurel was?
- 33:53Speaker 2: Laurel and Hardy.
- 33:53Speaker 1: He was English comedian and actor. He made over one
- 33:55Speaker 1: hundred films with his partner Oliver Hardy, with whom he
- 33:58Speaker 1: worked from nineteen twenty six till Hardy's death in nineteen
- 34:01Speaker 1: fifty seven. Moments before his death this is why he
- 34:03Speaker 1: makes the list. Moments before his death, Laurel told his
- 34:06Speaker 1: nurse that he'd like to go skiing. The nurse replied
- 34:08Speaker 1: she was not aware that he was a skier. I'm not,
- 34:10Speaker 1: he said, but I'd rather be doing that than this.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Nice.
- 34:14Speaker 1: That's a good one. Last. I hope I have a
- 34:15Speaker 1: good whimsical yeah.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Exit, Yeah, I can imagine myself being.
- 34:21Speaker 1: We need to plan it out because you're not going
- 34:22Speaker 1: to be in your right head, so you need to
- 34:23Speaker 1: be like, I got to make sure I say this, ah.
- 34:26Speaker 2: But that'd be like who cares if I said it?
- 34:28Speaker 2: But then you're like, what if they put on a
- 34:30Speaker 2: podcast someday?
- 34:31Speaker 1: Yeah, you never know who knows, but that to be like, well,
- 34:33Speaker 1: who cares?
- 34:34Speaker 2: I'm not here to hear the podcast.
- 34:36Speaker 1: John This Week nineteen twenty five, the first national spelling
- 34:41Speaker 1: Bee was held in Washington, d C was sponsored by
- 34:43Speaker 1: the Louisville Courier Journal. The winner was eleven year old
- 34:47Speaker 1: Frank Newhauser of Kentucky, who correctly spelled his own last name. No. Uh,
- 34:52Speaker 1: he I almost mispronounced his name. I was like, man,
- 34:56Speaker 1: Newhauser is a tough one the way it was spelled h.
- 35:00Speaker 1: He correctly spelled gladiolas winning five hundred dollars in gold
- 35:03Speaker 1: pieces in today's gold pieces or in today's gold prices. Rather,
- 35:07Speaker 1: that gold would now be worth about eighty thousand dollars,
- 35:11Speaker 1: So this eleven year old won eighty grand. The five
- 35:14Speaker 1: hundred dollars in nineteen twenty five is equivalent to nine
- 35:17Speaker 1: thousand today, So he won five five hundred gold pieces
- 35:22Speaker 1: eighty thousand dollars. I'm trying to think, Yeah, that doesn't
- 35:24Speaker 1: make sense. That doesn't make any sense. It's either worth
- 35:26Speaker 1: nine thousand dollars, it's worth eighty thousand. Who is that
- 35:28Speaker 1: siri five hundred dollars? Maybe he's maybe it's saying the
- 35:32Speaker 1: five hundred dollars. I don't know. Anyway, what I wanted
- 35:35Speaker 1: to have you do was spelled gladiolas. I want to
- 35:40Speaker 1: see if you would have won the Spelling Bee. Gladiolas. Gladiolas.
- 35:43Speaker 2: What's the language of origin.
- 35:45Speaker 1: I don't have any of that, John, g l A yes,
- 35:50Speaker 1: D yes, I L no no glad d Oh, I'm sorry.
- 35:59Speaker 2: I oh L I'm done. Can I try it again? Gladiolis?
- 36:06Speaker 2: John g l A d io l.
- 36:12Speaker 1: E. John, you have lost either nine thousand dollars in
- 36:20Speaker 1: gold or eight thousand.
- 36:22Speaker 2: There's no way to really spell it the well.
- 36:26Speaker 1: I mean, I'm looking at it. Of course I'm going
- 36:28Speaker 1: to get it right here. G l A d I
- 36:32Speaker 1: O l u s gladiolas. Oh, it's just not gladiolius.
- 36:37Speaker 1: No gladio.
- 36:38Speaker 2: That's what I was spelling.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but I pronounced it pretty good. Yeah, I said
- 36:43Speaker 1: it multiple times. I wasn't trying to deceive you with
- 36:44Speaker 1: me as you read the words yourself. Yes, I'm like
- 36:48Speaker 1: Chuck Wolrid. I got all the answers. I'm very smug. No, no, no, sir,
- 36:52Speaker 1: I think you have this card. The The E. W.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Scripts Company acquired the rights to the program in nineteen
- 36:59Speaker 1: forty one, is now known as the Scripts National Spelling Bee.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and that whole listen. The people in the spelling
- 37:06Speaker 2: bee between the Scripts and the Bloods. I mean, it's
- 37:09Speaker 2: like a real you don't want to get between them.
- 37:11Speaker 2: It's like the Color Wars. You do not the Scripts
- 37:15Speaker 2: and the Bloods.
- 37:15Speaker 1: This guy John finally this week eighteen eighty five. Okay,
- 37:21Speaker 1: the Unassembled. There's a lot of history here that was
- 37:24Speaker 1: unaware of about this particular monolith, the unassembled one hundred
- 37:29Speaker 1: and fifty one high Statue of Liberty, a gift from
- 37:33Speaker 1: the French. It arrived in New York. The French donated
- 37:37Speaker 1: the Statue of Liberty, but the US was responsible for
- 37:40Speaker 1: building its pedestal. So they send you this thing and
- 37:43Speaker 1: they're like, you got to put it together. You got
- 37:44Speaker 1: to put it together, and you got to build something
- 37:46Speaker 1: to put it on. And so that became a whole
- 37:48Speaker 1: political fight. I did not know this. You may have
- 37:50Speaker 1: known this. In eighteen eighty four, the Governor of New York,
- 37:53Speaker 1: Grover Cleveland, veto to bill to provide fifty thousand dollars
- 37:58Speaker 1: for the project, attempt the following year to have Congress
- 38:01Speaker 1: provide the one hundred thousand dollars necessary to complete the project.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Because I guess the prices of skyrocketing, we're gonna need
- 38:07Speaker 1: one hundred grand. Now we need nine thousand dollars in gold.
- 38:12Speaker 1: It also failed. The New York committee, with only three
- 38:15Speaker 1: thousand dollars in the bank, was unable to build the pedestal.
- 38:19Speaker 1: With the project in jeopardy, other American cities offered to
- 38:22Speaker 1: pay the full cost of erecting statue in return for
- 38:25Speaker 1: relocating it to their city. So it became a well,
- 38:27Speaker 1: we can build it, but it's going to have to
- 38:29Speaker 1: come to Montana, and we were like, we're not doing that, dude,
- 38:32Speaker 1: Just be cool Montana. However, publisher Joseph Pulitzer of The
- 38:39Speaker 1: New York World I'm assuming of the same, started a
- 38:43Speaker 1: donation drive that drew more than one hundred and twenty
- 38:45Speaker 1: thousand contributors, most of whom gave less than a dollar,
- 38:49Speaker 1: raising one hundred two thousand dollars. With those funds, it's
- 38:51Speaker 1: like an original GoFundMe h. With those funds, construction of
- 38:56Speaker 1: the pedestal began. Ironically, Grover Cleveland, who vetoed the funding
- 38:59Speaker 1: for the pedestal walk up of New York, later became
- 39:01Speaker 1: US President and presided over its dedication in eighteen eighty six.
- 39:05Speaker 1: And want that preach these politicians, they vetoed the money,
- 39:08Speaker 1: and he's like, we're so honored to have Then you're like, dude,
- 39:12Speaker 1: come on man.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Yeah, but that means okay, the whole he said he vetoed,
- 39:17Speaker 2: he vetoed it, and then he tried to get cong
- 39:18Speaker 2: so he vetoed in it.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Four if he's the governor, he vetoed.
- 39:21Speaker 2: The legislature, the state legislature, which means he was trying
- 39:24Speaker 2: to probably get the federal government, which is why he's
- 39:26Speaker 2: trying to get Congress to do it. Is what that
- 39:28Speaker 2: must be stoped Defending Rover Cleveland, dude, I like, I
- 39:30Speaker 2: kind of like.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Uh. He presided over to eddication in eighteen eighty six,
- 39:34Speaker 1: which included New York's first ticker tape parade. The first
- 39:36Speaker 1: ticker tape parade was for the dedication of the It's a.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Long ways away. That parade is a long ways away
- 39:42Speaker 2: from that statue.
- 39:43Speaker 1: The pedestal would be inscribed with the poem by Emma
- 39:46Speaker 1: Lazarus containing the famous lines give me you're tired, you're poor,
- 39:49Speaker 1: your huddle masses yearning to breathe free. Yeah and uh yeah.
- 39:55Speaker 1: So that was it, but the political wrangling over even
- 39:58Speaker 1: that's kind of funny to me though, because you get
- 39:59Speaker 1: a gift and then you got to figure out, like, well,
- 40:01Speaker 1: now we gotta put it on the man tole. We
- 40:03Speaker 1: got to build the man toll.
- 40:04Speaker 2: And imagine even the assembly. I mean, one of the
- 40:08Speaker 2: things I don't like is having to assemble things. Imagine
- 40:12Speaker 2: how that's true. You get a gift and you're like,
- 40:14Speaker 2: did they even send tools? You know what I'm saying,
- 40:18Speaker 2: weird bolts, gigantic Alan Rinch.
- 40:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 40:24Speaker 2: I hesitate to say this. It just reminds me of something.
- 40:27Speaker 2: I actually got a little nervous because I'm not going
- 40:32Speaker 2: to say what. But recently I was asked to help
- 40:34Speaker 2: write an inscription for a statue. Okay, that's going to
- 40:39Speaker 2: go on a college campus. Yeah, and I just realized, wow, somewhat.
- 40:44Speaker 2: I mean, when they did the Statue of Liberty, someone
- 40:46Speaker 2: got to write.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so now you get your words immortalized, possibly forever
- 40:52Speaker 1: if I do.
- 40:54Speaker 2: So, I was just gonna be like, hey, you know,
- 40:55Speaker 2: I don't know, Hey guys, this guy was great. I
- 41:00Speaker 2: don't know. Now I'm going to really to think.
- 41:01Speaker 1: It through that true liberty is a good one man.
- 41:03Speaker 1: When I read, seriously, when I we we took the
- 41:06Speaker 1: whatever the faery over and you see the Statue of Liberty?
- 41:11Speaker 1: What is it from? Not Long Island? What's it called?
- 41:14Speaker 1: That island fairy? So you see it and and I'm
- 41:17Speaker 1: telling you, like we I looked it up and we
- 41:20Speaker 1: were reading it, and I get you get teary I
- 41:23Speaker 1: thinking about it. I know we're in the two fifty
- 41:24Speaker 1: and all that, and uh, I think Bono used to
- 41:29Speaker 1: say about America, it's more than a country. It's a
- 41:31Speaker 1: great idea. And I think when we stop, we need
- 41:34Speaker 1: to embrace that thing of like what what could America be?
- 41:38Speaker 1: We never stopped becoming, so we're still becoming, this idea
- 41:41Speaker 1: that like let's just keep celebrating and like like resting
- 41:43Speaker 1: on our laurels, like we never stopped, but we're still becoming.
- 41:45Speaker 1: So we got to watch what we're becoming, always as
- 41:48Speaker 1: people and as a country. But when I think about
- 41:50Speaker 1: that poem and I set my lamp at the Golden Door,
- 41:53Speaker 1: I mean that is like that's a good one. Yeah,
- 41:56Speaker 1: that's one of those like puts a lump in your throat, dude,
- 41:59Speaker 1: And so yeah, America, Yeah, it's uh, we're doing it.
- 42:03Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe we are Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday America.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Well not yet, but we're coming up on.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Could you imagine if they had not assembled it and
- 42:11Speaker 2: watching that statue piece some boat on the ocean, I
- 42:14Speaker 2: mean like and they're.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Like, man, we're not We're not about put a big
- 42:18Speaker 1: sale on it than France. Just like what if other
- 42:21Speaker 1: countries senter stuff and that we were like, yeah, we're good.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Listen if you want to come from this ambo, come
- 42:28Speaker 2: on Switzerland, Switzerland.
- 42:30Speaker 1: It's like a big, huge pocket knife.
- 42:35Speaker 2: It just pulled out all.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Oh man, this would have helped us with the thing.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Why didn't you give this this before?
- 42:42Speaker 2: That's very funny.
- 42:43Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 42:43Speaker 2: I like that.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Well that's it for history though. That's it.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Yeah, no more, no more. History's gone till another time.

- 43:46Speaker 1: I've heard it wrong. I had two chances.
- 43:48Speaker 2: It's my fault. I screwed up being put on the spot.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Like I pronounced it wrong. I wasn't. I wasn't like
