- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to the Aligned Actor Podcast.
- 0:03I'm Amy Schloerb,
- 0:04your friendly fellow actor and mindfulness and mindset coach.
- 0:07And this is the podcast where I share practical mindfulness
- 0:10tools and mindset
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: shifts designed to help us all thrive in our full actor lives.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Because as we all know, actor life is really rough.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: It is not easy to be an actor.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: There is so much that gets thrown at us all the time.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And sometimes there are periods of just complete silence and we're like,
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: What?
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Hello?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Is the industry still there?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: It's a roller coaster.
- 0:34There's ups,
- 0:34there's downs,
- 0:35there's twists,
- 0:36there's turns,
- 0:36there's full-on loop-de-loops.
- 0:38And the only way that we will survive in this profession
- 0:41long-term is if we are
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: taking care of ourselves,
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: fortifying and strengthening our nervous systems,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Soothing our nervous systems,
- 0:48handling all of the stress that the entertainment industry
- 0:52throws our way.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And that is what we do here on the Aligned Actor Podcast.
- 0:57And right now we're doing a deep dive series on mindfulness so
- 1:00that we can all learn
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: this tool that is really,
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: really effective and a really effective balm against all or balm,
- 1:09soothing balm for the actor nervous system to help us handle
- 1:13all of that stress and
- 1:15all the stuff that the entertainment industry is just really
- 1:18good at making us
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: feel.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: All the feels.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: All the actor feels.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So in this episode,
- 1:24I'm going to share a story-based metaphor for formal
- 1:28mindfulness meditation.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And as actors, we love stories.
- 1:32And humans in general tend to understand and remember ideas
- 1:36more easily when we
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: associate them with a story because then we relate to the stories.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Stories help us relate to things.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So it just helps in a lot of ways.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And if mindfulness meditation is something that's new for you,
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: maybe you're having some trouble relating to it.
- 1:53and there's still parts of it that feel really foreign or
- 1:55complicated or unfamiliar
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: and you're like,
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: am I doing this right?
- 1:59Chances are you're doing it right if you've been following
- 2:01along in this series.
- 2:03But I think that turning our mindfulness meditation practice
- 2:06into a story is going
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: to help sort of click some things even better for you.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: So that's what we're going to do.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: So this story
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: is entitled The Call of Your Career.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: You have been cast in a lead role in a Steven Spielberg film.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Congratulations!
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Everybody is so happy for you.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: We're so excited for you.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: This is going to be amazing.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: You're going to love it.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: It's wonderful and yay you.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Brilliant director that he is.
- 2:36Steven Spielberg has called you to discuss your character and
- 2:40the project as a whole.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: and you're having a great conversation.
- 2:44It is fun and collaborative and you're really connecting and
- 2:49you're just so excited
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: to be working together.
- 2:52Suddenly your roommate barges in and whines,
- 2:55oh,
- 2:56I've had the worst day ever.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And you quickly cover up your phone microphone and you whisper,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: hey,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I'm on the phone with Steven Spielberg.
- 3:06and your roommate's eyes bug out and they give you a big thumbs
- 3:08up and they mouth
- 3:10an apology and they duck out quietly you and Spielberg continue
- 3:15your conversation
- 3:17but then you hear that familiar boop boop of call waiting and
- 3:21you notice that your
- 3:22scene partner from acting class is calling you probably calling
- 3:26to arrange a time
- 3:26to rehearse but of course you can't talk now you're talking to
- 3:30Steven Spielberg so
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: you let the call go to voicemail
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Finally,
- 3:35Spielberg is sharing his vision of the big climactic moment for
- 3:40your character when
- 3:41you start to hear that obnoxious whir of a leaf blower in your
- 3:45neighborhood.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: To make sure you don't miss any of his genius,
- 3:49you of course close your window and you put in your
- 3:52noise-canceling headphones.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So you and Steven,
- 3:57because you can call him Steven now because he's your director
- 4:00and you're just
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: vibing on all the levels,
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: you finish up your call.
- 4:05and you hang up and you are feeling so excited to be a part of
- 4:09this production.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: So this story, obviously, is a metaphor for mindfulness meditation.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Like I said in the opening,
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: we are using story to simplify our understanding of mindfulness practice.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So Steven Spielberg is your breath.
- 4:29You're staying focused on that conversation no matter what
- 4:34tries to distract you.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: The roommate,
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: the other phone call,
- 4:39and the leaf blower are all things that can cause your mind to
- 4:43wander away from
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: focusing on your breath.
- 4:48And in both cases,
- 4:49phone calls and mindfulness sessions,
- 4:52distractions are going to happen.
- 4:54And when they do,
- 4:55we just gently guide our focus back to where we need it to be.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: We don't yell at our roommate.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: We don't smash our phone to get rid of the other caller.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: We don't scream at the leaf blower to stop.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And of course, we would never hang up on Steven Spielberg.
- 5:17And this is the big difference between our phone call metaphor
- 5:21and an actual formal
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: mindfulness session.
- 5:24Because sometimes when we're practicing mindfulness,
- 5:27we will completely hang up on our breath.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: It's just gonna happen.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Our mind is gonna wander completely away.
- 5:36The beautiful thing is that while Steven Spielberg would
- 5:39probably get pretty
- 5:40annoyed if we kept just randomly putting our phone down
- 5:44mid-conversation to have
- 5:45like a side chat with our roommate or to take another call can
- 5:49you imagine being
- 5:49like hey Steven can you just hang on a second because like my
- 5:52mom's calling me and
- 5:53I just I'm going to talk to her for a second and be like um I'm
- 5:56kind of in the
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: we're in the middle of something here like hello our breath though
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: is never upset when our mind wanders.
- 6:07Our breath is like a best friend who is always ready to welcome
- 6:13us back to the
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: present moment with kind,
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: open arms.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: So if you drop the call, just pick it back up again.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: There is no judgment.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: There is no shame.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: There is no need to beat yourself up.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: So to recap,
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: and sum up our mindfulness session.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: You begin a kind,
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: curious conversation with your breath,
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: noticing those inhales and exhales,
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: and then when distractions come up,
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: and they will come up,
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: you just acknowledge them.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: You say, hey, yeah, well, thank you thought for popping into my brain,
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: I'm having an important conversation with my breath right now.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: So let's talk later.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And you continue the conversation with your breath.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And that's it.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: It's simple.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: So thank you so much for joining me today.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: If you found this content helpful and inspiring,
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: I'd be so honored if you would leave a comment,
