Transcript
- 0:00Today's episode is brought to you by people who look like they got dressed without a mirror.
- 0:05I love the inflation. Our president. Insert theme song here.
- 0:10This is the Daily Starcast. I give you the news and maybe a laugh.
- 0:13I'm Lindsay Vernick and today is June 26, 2026.
- 0:18There's a lot of sixes today on that date, isn't there? Nobody said anything to me yesterday.
- 0:25However, I made a big mistake in my pod.
- 0:29Yesterday i said that the north korean soccer team showed up to the world cup in like the ice planes,
- 0:37i the correction is that it was actually the english team showed up in the ice
- 0:43planes so yeah not north korea i don't know where i got that from i guess it
- 0:48just sounded better in my head,
- 0:49in real news airbnb is rolling out this new anti-party ai software ahead of
- 0:56the fourth of July weekend to stop people from renting houses just to throw giant parties.
- 1:02The system looks at things like last-minute bookings, how close you live to
- 1:06the rental, and other patterns that basically scream, this isn't a family getaway,
- 1:11this is a giant party that is going to ruin your house.
- 1:15Imagine getting rejected by an algorithm because it looked at your reservation
- 1:19and said, yeah, this person definitely owns a Bluetooth speaker and says,
- 1:24bro, just invite everyone you know.
- 1:26We've officially reached the point where artificial intelligence isn't just replacing our jobs.
- 1:31It's replacing that one neighbor who will call the cops at 9 p.m.
- 1:36Happy 4th of July, everyone. Nothing says freedom quite like being denied an
- 1:40Airbnb because a computer thinks you're too fun.
- 1:43There's newly obtained emails showing California public health officials discussing
- 1:47aggressive messaging strategies as they're pushing for stricter tobacco regulations.
- 1:52The emails show a lot of internal conversations about how to put the campaign
- 1:57in a way that will build public support for a broader tobacco ban.
- 2:02So basically, it's less about here are the facts and why you should not be smoking
- 2:07to more how do we make this land with maximum emotional impact?
- 2:12And make people really not want to smoke.
- 2:15Look, every workplace has email chains that should have stayed in drafts.
- 2:19The difference here is most of ours are about meeting times and marketing strategies.
- 2:24These ones are apparently about how to sell one of the most controversial public
- 2:28health policies in the country.
- 2:30At the end of the day, whether you agree or disagree with the policy,
- 2:34the emails are raising questions about how public health messaging gets built
- 2:37behind the scenes, or as most people call it a group project where someone definitely should have said,
- 2:44let's not talk about this in text,
- 2:48scientists and food companies are once again messing with everyone's childhood
- 2:53and this time they're talking about removing the artificial dyes from m&ms.
- 2:58M&M's, the candy whose entire personality is, I am a brightly colored and staple
- 3:06chocolate in a very small shell.
- 3:09The idea is a broader push to phase out synthetic food dyes,
- 3:13which has sparked a huge thing of online experiments, debates,
- 3:17and people suddenly acting like they're forensic chemists in their kitchen.
- 3:21I get the country is trying to be healthier and all, but is it really a healthy
- 3:25lifestyle upgrade if we take away M&Ms too?
- 3:30If M&Ms lose their artificial colors, we're officially entering the era of beige candy.
- 3:35Some things are just not supposed to be messed with. And look,
- 3:39no judgment on food safety conversations, but there is something spiritually
- 3:44funny about taking the most recognizable candy in the world and asking,
- 3:48how can we make this healthier?
- 3:50Like, they're like two calories a bite, if that.
- 3:54And Lindsay Life. Okay, I'm going to be honest. This is something that I'm working
- 3:58through in stand-up right now, and I wanted to put it out there on the pod.
- 4:01I'm also going to post this on the talk, too.
- 4:04So I recently found out that I have been robbing the women who sell candy and
- 4:10stuff on the subway stations.
- 4:12If you don't live in New York City and you don't know about this,
- 4:16there's a lot of Hispanic women who will sell candy and,
- 4:21snacks and stuff on the subways, and they'll walk around and they'll ask if
- 4:26you want to buy anything.
- 4:28And sometimes these women have little children with them.
- 4:33And sometimes they're even trying to sell the candy too. Like five,
- 4:36six-year-old kids. It is so sad.
- 4:39So the other day I was telling my family how I will give these people a dollar
- 4:44sometimes, especially when they have the kids with them.
- 4:48And in exchange, I'll take a pack of gum.
- 4:51And my sister says, well, Lindsay, you're not really donating to them if you
- 4:58give them a dollar and then you take something.
- 5:01You just explained what buying something is.
- 5:05Also, that pack of gum is worth a lot more than a dollar.
- 5:10And so when you take that gum from them, you're essentially taking money from
- 5:15them and you're stealing from them.
- 5:17Because it's worth, you should be paying them more.
- 5:20So here I am thinking I'm doing a good deed for people. And it turns out I'm
- 5:25really doing the opposite.
- 5:28MVP this week goes to Larry David and the Obamas.
- 5:33And no, I didn't have that on my 2026 bingo card either, but none of anything
- 5:38that has happened this year is on our card, let's be honest.
- 5:42So if you haven't heard, it comes out today on HBO Max. It's very exciting.
- 5:48Larry David teamed up with Barack and Michelle Obama for an HBO sketch comedy
- 5:54special celebrating America's 250th birthday.
- 5:58Apparently, the founding fathers have been waiting 250 years to get roasted
- 6:02by the guy who gets annoyed when someone says happy birthday.
- 6:05Honestly, that's a collaboration that no one would have predicted,
- 6:09but I am so excited to watch it tonight.
- 6:12If anyone can make American history funny, it's Larry David.
- 6:16And if anyone can convince him to be patriotic for more than seven minutes, it's the Obamas.
- 6:22So congratulations to Larry David and the Obamas. This week's MVPs.
- 6:27They united the country, at least long enough for everyone to say, Wait, what?
- 6:32Cooking tip of the day. You're supposed to let meat rest after you're done cooking
- 6:36it, but nothing bad happens if you don't.
- 6:39Feedback, comments, questions, a nice Jewish boy looking for a date,
- 6:42email me at lindsay at thedailystarcast.com. Thanks so much for listening.
- 6:46Talk to you guys tomorrow.
