- 0:16to kind of figure out who we are. This whole year is a
- 0:20collaboration with my upcoming book, which drops

- 0:56look for that content coming your way.
- 0:59It's still in development, but it's getting there.
- 1:02I'm your host, Juliana Jay. Like I said, I'm an author,
- 1:06I'm a journalist, a journaler.
- 1:09I've been a journaler almost all of my life.
- 1:13I've done all different kinds of journals and
- 1:16I just find that they are so magical. There's so
- 1:20many things about yourself and inner wisdom that you have that
- 1:24you're so unaware of until you start writing it
- 1:29down somehow or recording it somehow.
- 1:32I talk a lot about in my journaling groups about
- 1:35how I spent a year journaling while commuting.
- 1:40Once. My commute was pretty long, could be anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours
- 1:44depending on the traffic. And during that time I would record myself
- 1:48talking, journaling through speech.
- 1:52And the craziest things came out while I was doing
- 1:55that that I didn't even think of. Most commonly,
- 2:00something would happen during the day, during my workday that I would just kind
- 2:04of brush over and move on. But in reflection on my drive
- 2:08home, realized that it really brought up
- 2:12some things for me or I was really upset about it, or it was
- 2:16a mirror for me in some way or some sort of reflection came out
- 2:20of it. It was really, really valuable. There's a lot of different ways
- 2:24people journal and leave this up to you for the
- 2:27journal prompt. But today's prompt is this.
- 2:32Who is your best friend? What do
- 2:36you love about them? List it all down in a bullet list
- 2:40and then write a letter of gratitude to
- 2:44them. I don't think we spend a lot of time
- 2:47as grown ups really being in a space
- 2:51of gratitude and thankfulness. And when we find ourselves
- 2:55in that space, when we have a gratitude practice,
- 3:00when we get in the habit of thanking people for
- 3:04all that they do for us. It makes our life happier
- 3:09over time. It makes us feel more
- 3:13secure and content with where we are in life. More grateful.
- 3:17Gratitude brings on a lot of joy.
- 3:20It brings on a lot of contentment, fulfillment,
- 3:23realization that you're connected to other people, there's a connection
- 3:28and so many other things. A gratitude practice
- 3:32is so powerful and it's really quite simple.
- 3:36Simple. Well, I say simple, but sometimes even
- 3:40I have a problem with my gratitude practice. I do a gratitude practice
- 3:44every morning. I wake up at 6 o' clock to do writing before I start
- 3:48my day. I'm very regimented about it because I wouldn't do it otherwise.
- 3:52So the alarm goes off at 6, I make coffee,
- 3:55and then I start my day with a gratitude
- 3:59practice. For me, that practice right now is writing
- 4:04down at least five things, maybe more, that I am grateful
- 4:08for, that maybe happened the day before or that I realized are such a gift
- 4:12in my life. There's so many things you don't realize are such a
- 4:16gift until it happens. For example,
- 4:19my daughters, both of my daughters, they kind of live on
- 4:23the same. In the. On the same property, but in different houses.
- 4:27And they each have a couple of cats
- 4:31and they have two foster cats right now. And their
- 4:34cats got really, really sick and they don't know why. The vet doesn't know why.
- 4:38Nobody knows why. They're all recovering now, so don't worry. They're all on the
- 4:42up, up and up. They're getting better every day. But for a while
- 4:46it was really scary. And one of my daughters has a very old cat
- 4:51that's around 18 years old, and she got sick. And she has been
- 4:56with the family for such a long time and she's such a sage amongst
- 5:00the family. And it was really hard on my daughter
- 5:05to have this happen. And. And she was
- 5:09at work and she's like, I don't know what to do. I feel like I'm
- 5:11failing the cat because I'm at work. But if I don't go to work,
- 5:14I don't get paid. You know, all those things that rattle around in our brains.
- 5:17And I was helping her figure out,
- 5:21like, okay, what to. What should she do next? You know, how's she gonna get
- 5:25to the vet to take somebody with her so she's not alone in case it's
- 5:28news, it's hard to hear. And to just go,
- 5:33do what she needs to do, follow her heart, do what she needs to
- 5:36do. Which she did. And the cat's on the mend. But that experience the
- 5:41day before made me realize how grateful I am that my cats aren't
- 5:46sick, that my animals are healthy and
- 5:50you know, being their usual crazy
- 5:54selves. Like currently right now, one is climbing a screen and
- 5:59that even though they are mischievous,
- 6:02they're in good health. And I felt really thankful for that. And I was really,
- 6:07really thankful that my daughter's cats were also recovering.
- 6:12And it just brought this whole gratitude. Sometimes I do what,
- 6:16what Esther Hicks used to call a rant,
- 6:20a manifestation rant. Esther Hicks is this really credible
- 6:24writer from, I want
- 6:28to say, the 70s and 80s. I'm not quite sure, don't quote me
- 6:32on that, but she wrote a lot of books about manifesting and a lot of
- 6:36the books are perspectives of someone she was channeling.
- 6:40This is really. You can see a lot of videos of her online
- 6:44and so check her out. But she has this one thing where you just have
- 6:48this, this rant about. For me, in this
- 6:52case, it's gratitude. But you're thankful for. And it's just a rant. Whether you're writing
- 6:56it all down, all the things you're grateful for, until you're exhausted. Are you saying
- 6:59it out loud? It's just helps ground
- 7:03your life in meaning when you get
- 7:07caught up and in a spiral of all the other things that aren't working out
- 7:11in your life or that are challenging or. Or when you get really caught up
- 7:15in desire. So many of us are, myself included and you know,
- 7:19we're in a capitalist society here, so we are incredibly barraged
- 7:23with things we're supposed to be desiring at all times. That's, you know, what advertising
- 7:28is. And when we get really caught up in this desire, we can just really
- 7:32feel that unworthy are suffering
- 7:36like we're really suffering because we can't have these other things.
- 7:39And to have a gratitude practice just helps bring it back into perspective of
- 7:44all the things that you do have that are joyous and great.
- 7:48It's also important to just kind of acknowledge who's
- 7:52around you. You might not. I don't really have.
- 7:55I don't construct my life in terms of best
- 8:00friends or besties or anything like that. You know, I like to say that
- 8:04you should be your own best friend or my dog's
- 8:08my best friend or all these kinds of things. So you can certainly write about
- 8:11yourself if you're. If you want to write about yourself as
- 8:15your best friend, you know, yourself knows you more intimately than anyone
- 8:19else does. They really are your best friend because they're there for you.
- 8:23Yourself is always there for you. You might say
- 8:27Mean things to yourself with your negative internal dialogue.
- 8:30Or you might self sabotage or do all these types of
- 8:34things to your, to yourself. But you know yourself most
- 8:39deeply and most intimately. So if you want to write about yourself
- 8:44as your best friend, why is that
- 8:47true? And what do you
- 8:52love about yourself? This is a really, really great
- 8:55practice and it's actually in my new
- 9:00book that's coming out. I wish I had a. I keep looking for a physical
- 9:02copy of the book to show you, but I don't have one yet. And when
- 9:06I get that box of books, I will post unboxing
- 9:10video. My publisher requires it.
- 9:13Last time I did that with my first book, I cried. It was
- 9:17not really this very exciting woohoo thing because I just got really emotional when
- 9:22I actually saw the physical thing. But if you're gonna write
- 9:26about yourself, what do you love about yourself?
- 9:29Allow yourself to go to that place where you can talk
- 9:34about what you love about yourself. If you're gonna talk about a
- 9:38different best friend, it can be a best friend or someone who's really
- 9:42close to you in any timeframe. You can talk about a childhood
- 9:46best friend, you can talk about an imaginary best friend. You can talk
- 9:50about caregivers or siblings
- 9:55or even writers that you really love, that you
- 9:58really, really connected with. I was
- 10:02a super fan, I still am, of the Bronte sisters.
- 10:06Not just I love them all. They've all I've written, I've read all
- 10:10of their works. They're all so beautiful. I love them all.
- 10:14And I could write about them, which would be really complicated actually,
- 10:18now that I think about it, because they did have challenging lives.
- 10:22But I think if I wrote about them, it might be
- 10:26really interesting to figure out. Why do I resonate so much
- 10:30with them? That is something I ask myself a lot,
- 10:34is why do I resonate with this author? What,
- 10:37what is, what is that? Where's it coming from?
- 10:41And often when I do that writing practice or that
- 10:45reflection, I find out something about myself that I
- 10:49didn't know. So you can write about an
- 10:53author or an artist, or a director or an actor or
- 10:58a poet or musician,
- 11:01and what do you love about them? And as you're doing this practice,
- 11:06you'll notice what does what you love about
- 11:10them say about yourself? Are there things you wish you had?
- 11:14Are there things you wish you do more of?
- 11:18Do you do it and you appreciate that about yourself?
- 11:22If one of the things you love about whoever it
- 11:26is you're writing is that they are
- 11:30emotionally available, you can then ask yourself,
- 11:33am I emotionally available? Is that something I have or something I
- 11:37wish I had or something I would like to achieve or something I'm currently
- 11:41working on, or something I'm afraid to express, but I
- 11:45am secretly inside. A lot of times
- 11:50these become things that we secretly have inside
- 11:54of us, but we don't let other people in on the secret because of
- 11:59fear, of the fear of exposing ourselves, of the fear that
- 12:04here we have this thing we think is beautiful about ourselves. And if
- 12:08we share it with others, they might say something negative about it, and that would
- 12:12be hard to take. So much
- 12:16of my life has been around that, hiding all the things about
- 12:20myself because I am afraid that people will say negative
- 12:25things about them. And I did go through a time where I did this
- 12:29year of being out of my comfort zone, and it was really hard.
- 12:33And a lot of the times I stepped out of my comfort zone, the people
- 12:37who knew me got really upset. Like,
- 12:41kind of wanted to, like, push me back into where I was and punish me
- 12:45back into where I was before. And it was really hurtful.
- 12:49Oh, my gosh. That was. It was a really hurtful couple
- 12:53of years. Oh, my gosh. That was during the time
- 12:57I wrote my first book, Reasons to Live. So there's some couple of stories
- 13:01in there around that time in that book. But,
- 13:05God, it was just really.
- 13:09I really felt raw at the end of it, at the end
- 13:14of every experience. Just. I'm a very visual person,
- 13:18so I would always visualize myself just as this lump of flesh
- 13:23on the ground after something would happen because it just would hurt me so
- 13:27deeply because these were things I had hidden for so long and
- 13:31finally allowed out into the light. And these people who
- 13:35I thought loved me stepped all over them. And that
- 13:39was hard. Sorry. I paused for a minute because there's some weird noise outside,
- 13:44and I don't know what it is. It kind of sounds like somebody's in my
- 13:46backyard. Weird. But maybe they're not.
- 13:50Anyhow, where was I?
- 13:53Yes. So these things that I let other people see were
- 13:57used against me. And that was really hard thing to overcome.
- 14:01So you might come up with some of those things as you're writing on this
- 14:05prompt. What are some things you really love about them? Are they
- 14:09things within yourself that you're keeping a secret from everybody else?
- 14:13And then write a letter of gratitude to them? This is a really
- 14:17fun exercise. I just did it this morning. I think the letter is
- 14:21behind me, behind that candle right there. If you're watching
- 14:25me. I just wrote a letter of gratitude to someone I know. It's a
- 14:29a writer who's actually been on my podcast before, friend of
- 14:33mine, really wonderful person, Sherry Balloul,
- 14:37and I wrote her this gratitude letter because I've been thinking a lot about her
- 14:41lately, and a lot of her practice is writing gratitude to people.
- 14:44And she has a business
- 14:48Simply Celebrate, which is all about that, just gratitude
- 14:53and being thankful and all of those things. And so
- 14:57I wrote her a letter of gratitude because I've been thinking a lot about her
- 15:01and I was wanting happiness
- 15:05for her. So I wrote her a gratitude letter. And it's really nice. It makes
- 15:09you feel really good that you do something like that. And if you write a
- 15:12gratitude letter for yourself, it's fun to take it out and look at it every
- 15:15once in a while when you're feeling kind of like down or
- 15:19it's been a hard day or you feel like you let yourself down
- 15:23or you made a mistake. It's nice to pull out that gratitude letter
- 15:26and remember that all that stuff's
- 15:31okay. Everybody has mistakes, everybody has problems,
- 15:34everybody works through things, everybody is
- 15:39human and everyone makes mistakes and everyone has
- 15:43hard days and everybody does things they don't feel so proud about.
- 15:46It's all just part of being here on this planet and learning things.
- 15:50So that's the prompt, y'. All. Again,
- 15:53it's who is your best friend or the
- 15:57somebody you highly admire that gives you a lot, could be an artist,
- 16:01could be anyone who gives you a lot in your life
- 16:05and what do you love about them? And finally
- 16:10writing a letter of gratitude to them.
- 16:14And again, I said it could be yourself. You're doing this too,
- 16:17so let me know how it goes. This is a really fun prompt.
- 16:21I think you're going to have a lot of fun with it. I certainly did
- 16:24when I wrote about it. And every time I write about this
- 16:28prompt, I always learn something more about myself. So I hope
- 16:32that happens for you as well. So, dear friends, I want to
