- 0:00Oh, God. Oh, my God.
- 0:13Are we on hot mics at the moment?
- 0:14Yeah. Say something real egregious.
- 0:17I don't know what egregious means, so I assume it's racist. Sure.
- 0:20Boy, those egregions.
- 0:22Let me tell you about that.
- 0:24You know what they're like?
- 0:25Ancient egregions.
- 0:27Ancient egregions.
- 0:28Let's talk about the modern egregions.
- 0:30Yeah.
- 0:32This shouldn't be that puzzling.
- 0:34We should from the top.
- 0:35At this point, it's clear what this is.
- 0:38Yeah, I mean, I think we are doing it now.
- 0:40The Nicolas Cage buying, selling, wrecking podcast.
- 0:43Yeah.
- 0:45The all seeing, all dancing.
- 0:46Yeah. Yeah.
- 0:47Nicolas Cage review.
- 0:49That's it.
- 0:50Jazz hands. All male, all nude.
- 0:52Yeah, definitely.
- 0:53Cage review. Yes.
- 0:55Speaking of the day, welcome back to Cage match colon
- 0:59a roundabout way of meeting Nicolas Cage, a podcast where we discuss
- 1:04the films and only the films of one Nicolas Cage.
- 1:09This week we have I'm Nick.
- 1:12Oh, yes. Names.
- 1:13Hi, Nick. How are you doing?
- 1:15This is your friend, Sean, and co-host of Cage.
- 1:17Oh, it's a pleasure to meet you.
- 1:20Also, Peter, how are you today? I'm here, too.
- 1:22You know, the more comfortable I get at doing this, the worse I get at it.
- 1:27Yeah. OK, so to quickly recap, this is 64 Nicolas Cage movies.
- 1:32Only Nicolas Cage going head to head, week to week. Got
- 1:37bracket style.
- 1:38And at the end, there will be one ultimate Victor Nicolas Cage movie
- 1:43as chosen by three idiots in the Pacific Northwest, which is definitive.
- 1:48Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:49That's how most things are decided.
- 1:52This week, we have It Could Happen to You versus Racing with the Moon.
- 1:56And maybe for the first time in the history of this entire podcast,
- 1:59we get to talk about two good movies.
- 2:01Yeah, we'll see about that.
- 2:03Oh, nice. Yeah, I like it.
- 2:06Oh, but I didn't give up the goat this time.
- 2:08It's not my turn to fuck it up.
- 2:12It's usually my job.
- 2:13I'm trying so hard not to.
- 2:14And I did when I started starting this thing.
- 2:17So this is an eight and a nine going up against each other.
- 2:20So they're they're kind of middling movies,
- 2:23which maybe that's how you felt about them.
- 2:25I don't know. I mean, up until this point, we've usually had
- 2:29last week, not withstanding, we've usually had a banger to a dud,
- 2:33a banger to a dud.
- 2:35So, yeah, we're talking about
- 2:37Racing with the Moon 1984 Nicolas Cage movie.
- 2:41So young cage and 1994s.
- 2:45It Could Happen to You still youngish, still looking good.
- 2:48Which one do we want to jump into first?
- 2:50Oh, let's just do Racing with the Moon.
- 2:52All right. Pre synopsis.
- 2:54Two best buddies, lifelong chums, Henry Hopper Nash, played by Sean Penn
- 2:59and Nicky played by Nick Cage are two childhood friends
- 3:03who are getting ready to ship off to World War Two.
- 3:06And they have three weeks to live their lives as best as possible.
- 3:11Hilarity ensues.
- 3:13Yeah, they're, you know, high schoolers.
- 3:15They're like 17 years old.
- 3:16They're going to get into some hijinks in their last six weeks.
- 3:20I mean, Nick Cage is definitely the comic relief of this piece.
- 3:24Certainly. He plays a second man.
- 3:26Yeah, this is a supporting role in this one.
- 3:27Definitely more of a Sean Penn picture.
- 3:31But could be why it's so good.
- 3:33I'm not taking a dig at Nick Cage.
- 3:35Don't worry, people. I still love him.
- 3:37We do love Nick Cage, but I do have to say, because this is
- 3:41just before Birdie, so he has all his teeth.
- 3:44Yeah, I checked. I looked.
- 3:47We counted. But this is definitely not his best work as an actor.
- 3:51Oh, yeah. He gives kind of a tough performance.
- 3:54It's I mean, it's not bad. It's not good.
- 3:56No, it's very just there.
- 3:59I don't know. I think he I still think he did a good job with what it is.
- 4:04I agree. He plays kind of just a boozing bowling pin setting.
- 4:09He works at a bowling alley.
- 4:10Also, the first time I've ever seen that machine
- 4:15that they used the pin setter in the 40s.
- 4:17So wacky. It's a wild little contraption.
- 4:20So Nicky and Henry, their day jobs are they work at a bowling alley
- 4:25and they are pin setters.
- 4:28Yeah, they have to like go at the back of the alley, grab pins,
- 4:33throw them this device and like push it down and weigh it down
- 4:36and then even like adjust the pins.
- 4:38Right. While dodging bowling balls.
- 4:41From Crispin Glover. From Crispin Glover.
- 4:44I was just I want to say right now this week I was amazed
- 4:48that all of the supporting cast, there was some really good people.
- 4:53With this movie, we had Crispin Glover and Carole Kane's in it.
- 4:59Michael Madsen is in there as the the GI with his leg blown off.
- 5:03Oh, I didn't even notice that. Yeah.
- 5:06So and just like in real life, the time I met Crispin Glover,
- 5:09I didn't realize it was Crispin Glover till later.
- 5:12Yeah, it was during the credits when I noticed. Yeah, same.
- 5:15I love Crispin Glover. For me, that face is the kid from Stranger Things.
- 5:19Finn Wolfhardt. Oh.
- 5:21I don't say this lightly. That kid should be bullied more.
- 5:25I'm going to have to cut that out.
- 5:28OK, just cut out the name. Just bleep up. Just quack out the name.
- 5:31We're not going to be the podcast of child bullying.
- 5:34Yeah, we're already the podcast of woman punching.
- 5:38Get it together, man.
- 5:40Fair. I mean, if he bleeps out the name, we still could be.
- 5:44We're not ready to diversify yet, though.
- 5:47We got to we got to get a handle on one thing that we punch.
- 5:50Yeah. Only if they set you on fire.
- 5:54Yeah, but Crispin Glover is just
- 5:58launching bowling balls at him in this scene at Sean Penn.
- 6:02Yeah, I mean, it was one of my more enjoyed scenes.
- 6:07I mean, straight out of the beginning of this movie, the most comedic aspect
- 6:11of the film. Sure.
- 6:13They're doing that work. They're busy.
- 6:15It's like fast paced.
- 6:17And they're just trying to catch up because Henry's just getting on work.
- 6:21And Nikki.
- 6:23So this is our connection to Bertie is all about boobs.
- 6:27Oh, yeah. He loves a good boob. Loves a good boob.
- 6:29In fact, is trying to get Henry to go on a double date with him
- 6:33because Nikki's girlfriend's parents don't like him.
- 6:37I wonder why.
- 6:38Hmm. Henry's not really dating.
- 6:40So they hire local sex worker played by Carol Kane.
- 6:43Yeah. Yep. To Annie, the prostitute.
- 6:46Annie, the prostitute sex worker.
- 6:48We've established that we only use that.
- 6:50Thank you. I think she was credited as Annie, the prostitute.
- 6:53Well, Annie, the sex worker 1984 has a lot to learn.
- 6:56Get woke 1984. Yeah, come on.
- 6:59Yeah. So he hires.
- 7:01So, I mean, I don't think money was exchanged.
- 7:03They seem to be on pretty good terms.
- 7:05Yeah. She she offers.
- 7:08She offers them, you know, freebie offers Sean Penn a freebie.
- 7:11Yeah. Yeah. So I mean, that was a scene.
- 7:14Yeah. What else we got?
- 7:16So the whole so the whole larger premise of the film is Sean Penn
- 7:21meets a woman who works at the movie theater and the library
- 7:26played by Elizabeth McCover.
- 7:28Caddy Wenger and decides to woo them in the age old tradition of stocking.
- 7:34Remember when stocking was considered romantic?
- 7:37Well, he she gets on a bus.
- 7:39Yeah. OK. And he jumps on the back of the bus and then jumps off
- 7:43and like sneaks around in the bushes to see her go into the big rich people house.
- 7:47Yeah. OK, that's fair.
- 7:49I don't think he like was trying to woo her by stalking her.
- 7:53But I'm just saying it was a trait in movies of this era.
- 7:57Yeah. But wrongfully assumes that she comes from money, that she is rich
- 8:01when, in fact, her mother is the maid of this house and she just lives in it
- 8:05and is friends with the rich girl who does live there.
- 8:08Main crux of the film is Henry and Katie trying to figure this whole thing out
- 8:12before he goes to war. Right.
- 8:14So they have a few weeks to form a relationship.
- 8:18All the while, Nicky's in the background.
- 8:20No consequences. I'm going to war enough.
- 8:23You know, fuck who I want.
- 8:24I'm going to kill a bunch of expletives for the Japanese.
- 8:28And everything's going to be great.
- 8:31And of course, he winds up knocking up his girlfriend and suddenly
- 8:34they need an abortion before he leaves town to die.
- 8:39A clean abortion. Clean abortions.
- 8:42I don't know. The trailer she walks into didn't look that clean.
- 8:46I talked about this, but then I was reminded that abortions
- 8:51in the 40s were probably not pretty off the books anyways.
- 8:56So and it, of course, comes down to that's an expensive procedure.
- 9:01They try and raise the money by.
- 9:04Well, they try to shark some people at pool because some Navy Navy men.
- 9:10Yeah. Sean Penn's character, Henry,
- 9:13apparently a really good pool player.
- 9:15They take it out to this pool hall and after some convincing by Nicky.
- 9:20Yeah. Henry agrees to do this.
- 9:22They get out there, go to shark some dudes and end up finding out
- 9:26that they were getting played from the beginning. Yeah.
- 9:29I thought that was a really good scene. I enjoyed it too.
- 9:32I really loved that kind of jazz track that was playing
- 9:37while they went through the actual game, once it was like officially on.
- 9:41Yeah. They don't have enough money to put 150 down on the game.
- 9:46So they get a couple of other Navy men to see.
- 9:49And I can't believe I missed that joke.
- 9:52A couple of other seamen do it bet on their buddies and they do.
- 9:56So suddenly the money's on the table and the guy starts playing a lot better.
- 10:00What were they playing? They referred to it as straight pool.
- 10:03So it's sort of like an end score.
- 10:06And it was just in this case, it was one ball, one point.
- 10:10There wasn't they weren't calling out balls in sequential order.
- 10:14It was you put a ball in a pocket, you get a point.
- 10:17You got to get 100 points to win the game.
- 10:19That would go forever.
- 10:21There's lots of games that take a long time.
- 10:24I guess you're supposed to be drinking while you do these things.
- 10:26Yeah, generally.
- 10:27You don't want a five minute game. That's boring.
- 10:29It was the 40s. You didn't have cell phones.
- 10:31You didn't have any other distractions.
- 10:33What do people do?
- 10:35Well, they knocked people up and got clean abortions.
- 10:39I played Pugl with semen.
- 10:43Scenes like that wouldn't exist in movies nowadays.
- 10:47Like they wouldn't have spent that much time on that setup.
- 10:50And I agree with you, Nick, where it's like the music
- 10:53and everything about the way it was cut, the tension that came from it,
- 10:55even though it still felt kind of like a romp.
- 10:59It was really interesting.
- 11:00I mean, you just wouldn't see something that takes eight minutes.
- 11:03You know, kind of a throwaway scene.
- 11:05Like it really doesn't have any effect on the movie, but it's a good one.
- 11:09By the time it gets to
- 11:11Nikki needs the money to pay for the abortion.
- 11:14He's the one who brings up in front of Katie that she's rich.
- 11:19She could help.
- 11:20And then he's, you know, like, fuck off.
- 11:22Don't you always fuck up everything?
- 11:23You fuck up my life.
- 11:24You know, you're the biggest fuck up.
- 11:26And there's the movie doesn't spend that much time on Nick Cage
- 11:30and Sean Penn's relationship.
- 11:32But then thinking over it, writing up show notes, thinking about the pool scene,
- 11:35the fact that they almost got, you know, their heads stomped in by semen.
- 11:39I go, no, he does fuck up quite a bit.
- 11:42Yeah, he doesn't seem to have like a successful outing on anything
- 11:46except touching boobs.
- 11:47Yeah, he's pretty good at that.
- 11:48Yeah. Talk about the.
- 11:52I didn't have a segue out of that one.
- 11:53No, I mean, I kind of do because you're talking about some of these antics
- 11:56that he gets into.
- 11:57And I think one of the other like amusing scenes is the two of them drunk.
- 12:02Oh, yes, the tattoo scene.
- 12:03So like I said, Nikki is all gung ho America.
- 12:07We're going to kill the expletives for Japanese people.
- 12:10So they get drunk one night and Nikki wants to get a giant bald eagle
- 12:15across his chest.
- 12:16And the proprietor of the tattoo shop is like, I'm not going to do that.
- 12:22I'm going to do you a favor and not tattoo a giant eagle on her chest,
- 12:26which I've worked in a tattoo shop.
- 12:28It was a proper response to someone that drunk coming in and demanding a tattoo.
- 12:33Well, Nikki doesn't take kindly to like, this is a freedom bird.
- 12:36This is America.
- 12:37The way the guy gets out of it is just like, how much you got?
- 12:41They have what? 250 between them.
- 12:42About 38. Yeah.
- 12:44About 38. That'll get you a sparrow on the elbow.
- 12:47You just sparrow on the elbow.
- 12:49I will say, though, Elizabeth McGovern, Katie loved her character.
- 12:54Super charming.
- 12:55The way she goes about wooing Henry Sean Penn.
- 13:00She tries to kind of initially blow him off by being.
- 13:03She is set up by her with her friend's cousin,
- 13:05but her friend doesn't have a date to the roller rink.
- 13:07So Henry comes in.
- 13:09She's like, Henry, what are you doing on Christmas Eve?
- 13:11And tries to get him to commit to plans.
- 13:14And she's like, great. You're going to go out with my friend here.
- 13:17I loved Henry's little dumb way of getting into this.
- 13:23She's like, Christmas Eve, you you've probably got plans with your family.
- 13:28Right. He's like, oh, yeah.
- 13:30Family. Yeah. Yeah. No, no, I don't have plans.
- 13:33No. Oh, what's going on?
- 13:36Oh, my dad, he's and he looks over and just sees a fishing magazine.
- 13:40And he's like, he's fishing. He Kaiser so say that. Yeah.
- 13:44It was fun.
- 13:45I mean, I'm going to do it poorly because I'm not Sean Penn.
- 13:47But but who is Sean Penn?
- 13:51My buddy Paul looks a lot like Sean Penn.
- 13:53And so Paul's Sean Penn. Paul is Sean Penn.
- 13:56It was good.
- 13:57She just kind of brings him in with it.
- 13:59And then, you know, it's a bait and switch.
- 14:02I do also like how we see that Henry.
- 14:06Henry's a bit of a rebel. Henry doesn't follow the rules
- 14:08because he's getting piano lessons at the beginning of the movie.
- 14:11And he plays pretty well on the piano.
- 14:14He's like, no, play it like this. No, play it like this.
- 14:16And he finally gets it.
- 14:17And then he just does a little ragtime and the piano instructor just stands up,
- 14:21grabs his coat, throws on his hat.
- 14:23His mom comes in like, stop it, stop it.
- 14:26And like, I'm so sorry.
- 14:26And he just like storms out of the house.
- 14:28He just can't stand that popular music.
- 14:31Yeah. Well, he was a pastor.
- 14:32Was he? Yeah.
- 14:33It's like the pastor or whatever.
- 14:35And so that damned rock and roll.
- 14:37That damned fucking music.
- 14:38Yeah. Sensibilities were different back then.
- 14:40Yeah. You could touch a boob, but don't listen to rock and roll.
- 14:45They had a hard job.
- 14:46They were having bowling balls thrown at them by Crispin Glover.
- 14:48Yeah. He had a good arm.
- 14:51I'm just so intrigued by how bowling alleys used to work.
- 14:55I know they had to pick up the ball and send it down a ramp.
- 14:58Every time we go bowling, I keep telling you monkeys could do that job.
- 15:00And I mean, if Nick Cage could do it, a monkey could do it.
- 15:04Maybe, maybe.
- 15:06I would like to see like baboons in the back.
- 15:10Just big red butts and blue faces.
- 15:13They could hang upside down while doing it.
- 15:15It's true. They wouldn't have balls thrown at their legs that way.
- 15:17I'm just saying like there's a money making scheme here to be made
- 15:20where we sell a baboon instead of like these $50,000 machines.
- 15:24I guarantee if we try to sell a baboon,
- 15:27it will be problematic and not end well for either of us.
- 15:32Because it will be killed by a baboon.
- 15:33Yes.
- 15:34Not even the moral implications of baboon sales.
- 15:37Just the fact that if we had a baboon, it would kill us.
- 15:39I'm not versed on monkey law, so I can't say.
- 15:43But I've watched a few nature documentaries
- 15:47and I think I would get bit a lot.
- 15:49They go for the testicles.
- 15:51They just rip those things right off.
- 15:53Sons of bitches.
- 15:54I like my testicles exactly where they are.
- 15:57I hear the Germans have a thing that.
- 16:00OK, let's let's get into favorite quotes.
- 16:02We're getting into my favorite quotes.
- 16:04OK, well, why don't you just give us your favorite quote?
- 16:06All right. Yeah. Nick was about to go there.
- 16:09It's Nick Cage.
- 16:11Nick Cage talking about talking to Henry.
- 16:15It's like, I hear the Nazis got this thing comes right at the ground,
- 16:19goes right for it, blows the whole package right off.
- 16:22One second, you're John Wayne.
- 16:23The next your Minnie Mouse.
- 16:26That was pretty good.
- 16:27I enjoyed a few other lines than you.
- 16:29This isn't my favorite.
- 16:30I'm going to give you two because I like to do that.
- 16:33When they're at the tattoo shop and the tattoo artist was just like
- 16:37Bird of Freedom, don't come cheap.
- 16:39And Nicky just kind of looks at him.
- 16:41He's he's fucking hammered and he just goes, oh,
- 16:45it was the only like full Nicholas Cage
- 16:48experience that we got in this movie.
- 16:51But it was a pretty good one. Just just looking at.
- 16:55My actual favorite quote.
- 16:57They were at their school and their school was doing like a wartime drills
- 17:02like for training for the girls to go be nurses.
- 17:05And so nurses girls were like coming around and all the boys had like fake
- 17:09blood on them and little notes that said like shot multiple times or dead.
- 17:14And the nurses would take care of them.
- 17:16Well, this nurse comes up to Henry and Nicky and she's like trying to deal with them.
- 17:22And Nicky's just like trying to get fresh with this chick.
- 17:26And she's like, oh, I'll come back when you're more ready for this.
- 17:31And Nick Cage just goes, no, wait, please, nurse.
- 17:35I want to show you my wound.
- 17:38And that really got me. My other one.
- 17:40Do we want to do this to partner?
- 17:42OK, you want to I'll be Sean Penn.
- 17:44All right. Sean Penn does the whole thing about how it's like, you know,
- 17:46I hate what you always drink.
- 17:48I hate when you're drinking.
- 17:49And Nick Cage does an awkward hip thrust dance before he started drinking.
- 17:54I could not do that.
- 17:55Why would you want to do that?
- 17:57It gives me pleasure.
- 17:59Yeah. So he's just air humping.
- 18:01Yeah. But he does it wildly.
- 18:02Actually, both times, Nick Cage does any kind of dancing.
- 18:06And this is just terrific.
- 18:08Later, when he's in the bowling alley and he's mopping,
- 18:12just like singing a song and then he just busts out this just wild
- 18:16gyration of like a full body seizure.
- 18:19It's just so good.
- 18:20And then the bowling alley owner yells at him.
- 18:23It's like, yeah, it was like, what do I pay you for?
- 18:24Nick Cage, like I'm your best employee in bowling alley owners.
- 18:27Like, no, you're not.
- 18:28His only response is then I don't fucking know.
- 18:32No, it's good.
- 18:33I really I like Nicolas Cage in this whole movie.
- 18:36I do too. He's charming.
- 18:37I don't think there's a single scene where he's not drinking.
- 18:40No, he almost always has like a pint of whiskey on him.
- 18:44Yep. He's a fuck up.
- 18:46Like, yeah, he is. He's just drunk all the time.
- 18:49And we know within the film because he has a shiner
- 18:52when he's going to pick up his date early in the film.
- 18:55And he just offhand mentions that, you know, it's his old man.
- 19:01And his mom's out of the picture. She died.
- 19:03Yeah. And that's the other thing is after they have their blow up
- 19:06and Henry tells Nick Cage to fuck off, Henry's dad is a gravedigger,
- 19:10groundskeeper at the cemetery.
- 19:13And it turns out that after Nicky's mom died,
- 19:18they kind of took him in like the dad was a fuck up and an asshole.
- 19:22So they fed Nicky a lot in childhood.
- 19:25You know that Nicky is at his heart a good kid.
- 19:28And a lot of that has to do with his friendship with Henry
- 19:31and their family's like influence on him,
- 19:35which I thought was a nice little touch. Yeah.
- 19:37I do care to us. Yeah, that's nice.
- 19:39I do want to briefly touch on the end, which we do need to quickly discuss
- 19:44when Nicky tells Henry about needing the abortion.
- 19:47It's after they do a thing they used to do as kids, which is race a train
- 19:51and then grab onto one of the box cars and ride it for a while,
- 19:53then jump off on a hill.
- 19:55Apparently, this is a very dangerous thing, especially when you're drunk.
- 19:58Yeah. I mean, that makes sense.
- 19:59Yeah. I mean, trains are big, heavy things.
- 20:02They flatten shit. Yeah.
- 20:04So especially people. That's a thing that, you know, that's a thing,
- 20:06you know, from their childhood that they remember fondly.
- 20:09So caddy and Henry break up, they get together back at the end
- 20:12right before he ships out.
- 20:14He gives her the kiss.
- 20:15He says bye to mom and dad
- 20:17all while the train conductors like, you know, all aboard.
- 20:21And the train starts leaving.
- 20:23And we have this really nice heartfelt ending.
- 20:25And his parents are just like, you're missing your train.
- 20:27You're missing your train.
- 20:28And they just look at each other and like, ready, go.
- 20:30And they like have this fun little jaunt along the train.
- 20:33And grab on at the end.
- 20:34Yeah, that really undercut the heartfelt ending.
- 20:40It showed reconciliation between the two of them after their fight.
- 20:44I just thought it was a weird like add on.
- 20:46Well, it felt actually a little bit similar to the ending of Birdie,
- 20:50where it kind of ends on just a little bit of a bit on the joke.
- 20:53Right. I forgot about that.
- 20:54Yeah, a little bit.
- 20:56Totally like that. What?
- 20:58To me, it was like their characters, their stories had just come full circle
- 21:01and they were back to it.
- 21:03I just wanted to touch on Elizabeth McGovern's performance.
- 21:06I thought that was really good.
- 21:08She was great.
- 21:09Great, really clean performance.
- 21:10Yeah. And like I had an issue with that.
- 21:12I loved her introduction.
- 21:13She's just dancing in a field by herself.
- 21:15And all I thought to myself was that girl dances to her own beat.
- 21:19You can't hear it, but she does.
- 21:22I mean, there were there were little things
- 21:23she was doing with her face and her eyes that I thought were just like
- 21:25really advanced acting.
- 21:27Yeah, it was a really nuanced performance. Yeah.
- 21:30And I mean, I don't really know a deep dive into the rest of her career.
- 21:33I know she's big on.
- 21:35Downton Abbey and like a few other things.
- 21:37Not a whole lot that I've really seen.
- 21:39Yeah, it's just interesting.
- 21:40Some of these these sort of like young, ingenue actresses,
- 21:44like what became of them, because obviously like Sean Penn, Nick Cage,
- 21:48everybody else who's in this movie, like it's it's a surprising cast.
- 21:52Yeah, I don't know.
- 21:53I know this movie financially didn't do well.
- 21:56It was maybe like a six and a half million budget with a six million bucks.
- 22:01Well, five of that went to Nick Cage, of course.
- 22:02Obviously, there's a few interesting just filmmaking things.
- 22:06I found the shot with the train when they're on the tracks
- 22:12and the trains coming at them.
- 22:13That's a mirror and they're just reflecting a train on another set of tracks.
- 22:18Oh, so that way, you know, their leads weren't in any actual mortal danger.
- 22:22That's fair. That's good.
- 22:23So that's pretty cool, like old style filmmaking.
- 22:27What did you think overall of his performance, though?
- 22:30I know, like a little overacty.
- 22:32I wasn't blown away by it, but he said he's just such a supporting character, too.
- 22:38It was hard to really get anything out of him.
- 22:41He was there to just drive parts of the story.
- 22:44And I mean, the scene where Sean Penn like pretty much tells him off, you know,
- 22:49you could you can see the hurt in him.
- 22:51Yeah, it's also hard to like really gauge it for me because he is just playing
- 22:56me like half in the bag most of the time.
- 22:58Yeah. So maybe good acting.
- 23:00Maybe. I don't know if I really had a big strong opinion on that.
- 23:04No, I didn't.
- 23:05Like, it wasn't hasn't been his best performance that we've seen so far.
- 23:08Probably not. Not his worst.
- 23:11Yeah, I think what struck me is that while it was overacty,
- 23:15there were those moments like the weird response to the tattoo
- 23:18that just were like, oh, there he is.
- 23:20Yeah, he pops out every once in a while.
- 23:22It's not flat. It's not a flat performance.
- 23:24It's not left behind.
- 23:26I think he did fine.
- 23:27I don't think it was a bad performance on his.
- 23:30No, it was early in his career.
- 23:33It's no worse than his performance in Birdie, which was also
- 23:38fairly flat, just at different decibel levels.
- 23:41True. And I really liked Birdie. Yeah.
- 23:44OK. Well, how about a little bit of 1994?
- 23:49Romantic comedy.
- 23:51This is where I really shine, because these are these are the movies I love.
- 23:55This is your bread and butter.
- 23:56Yep. So this movie is a true story or based on a true story.
- 24:02And it's the story of Charlie Lang and his wife, Muriel Lang.
- 24:08He's a New York cop played by Nick Cage.
- 24:11She's a hairdresser.
- 24:13They live in Queens played by Rosie Perez played by Rosie Perez.
- 24:17They live in Queens, have a shitty one bedroom apartment.
- 24:21She hates being in Queens.
- 24:23He loves being in Queens.
- 24:24He buys a lottery ticket at Herba Hest, ends up going to a diner,
- 24:28has enough for the bill, but not a tip, offers the waitress played by
- 24:35Bridget Fonda, either half of the winnings
- 24:39or split the winnings of the lotto ticket or double the tip on the next day.
- 24:44She doesn't think he's going to show up.
- 24:46So she's like, whatever, cool.
- 24:48Overnight, Nicolas Cage and his wife, they win the lottery
- 24:52along with a shit ton of other people.
- 24:55So their 64 million goes down to four.
- 24:58He goes back, offers her her cut of it and she takes it.
- 25:03Rosie Perez, very upset about the situation.
- 25:06But Nicolas Cage kind of soothes her into it, being like, Oh, you know, tell everybody.
- 25:11Everybody will think you're Muriel Lang, the hairdresser with the heart of gold.
- 25:16And so she goes along with it.
- 25:18They kind of get sucked into some high society things as Muriel
- 25:23is really trying to push herself out of it.
- 25:26And it's like, this is 1994 and you only have two million dollars.
- 25:32You're going to blow it all real fast in New York City.
- 25:36But they get through that.
- 25:38Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda, they use their money to like help people,
- 25:43like just enriching other people's lives.
- 25:46Rosie Perez really hates it, decides that she wants a divorce.
- 25:51They go through with said divorce and Muriel decides she wants all the money.
- 25:56Lawsuit ensues.
- 25:58Finalization of the film.
- 25:59She gets all the money and Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda
- 26:05go off and start their own life.
- 26:08People from around New York send in monetary contributions to them.
- 26:13They get away with six hundred thousand.
- 26:16Plenty.
- 26:17And that's the movie.
- 26:18It's a very sweet film.
- 26:20I really I think the most surprising thing for me in this film is seeing
- 26:24Nicolas Cage's romantic lead and having a romantic plot that I wasn't immediately like,
- 26:30Oh, this is off putting because so far every time we've seen him interact with a lady in
- 26:35these films, it's been groovy or just ghostwriter.
- 26:41Yeah, it all comes across so sweet.
- 26:44This movie is just sweet.
- 26:46It's very sweet.
- 26:47It's not necessarily something I look for and probably wouldn't have watched this if I
- 26:53wasn't doing a podcast about Nicolas Cage, but it was an enjoyable watch.
- 26:58I mean, I watched it all.
- 27:00Again, a lot of casting surprises.
- 27:03Touch of the tooch.
- 27:04Yeah, we got the tooch playing of Vannes, Bridget Fonda's husband, who she has been
- 27:10trying to divorce, but didn't have money for strange husband Eddie.
- 27:14OK, I got to I got to talk about that one for a second, because seeing shirtless tooch
- 27:18balding, shirtless, ripped Stanley toochy being like a nagging asshole, I was like,
- 27:24God, that's kind of hot.
- 27:26When he stole the type, when he stole her macadamia nuts as she was leaving,
- 27:32that was so good, and he just sits there eating them so proud of himself.
- 27:36Her one thing as soon as she has two million dollars, the one thing she treats herself
- 27:39to is a bottle of macadamia nuts.
- 27:41Yeah, which is nice.
- 27:42I mean, shows they're both, you know, more grounded people.
- 27:47But we had the tooch.
- 27:48I personally loved seeing Wendell Pierce in there every time I see him,
- 27:53and especially in like a cop's uniform.
- 27:56I just wanted to say, shit,
- 27:59because I love the wire.
- 28:01But we've also got Isaac Hayes playing the narrator Angel.
- 28:04That is such a weird part of this film.
- 28:09Yeah, it's it's kind of like that thread that ties it all together
- 28:13and you don't even notice it until the end.
- 28:15Well, like so it starts off with Isaac Hayes narrating kind of what we're about to see
- 28:20about these two people.
- 28:22And he just says, you know, and he's just he's talking to the camera.
- 28:25It's breaking the third wall.
- 28:26And he just ends his little starting narration with My name's Angel.
- 28:30So like, OK, this is going to be some touched by an angel bullshit.
- 28:33That's what I expected as well.
- 28:34And he's like in the background.
- 28:36He didn't touch anybody, though.
- 28:37No, but he's in the background of almost every scene, every important scene.
- 28:42And the whole movie is being played out in the media, like the New York Post.
- 28:46Always their front page story is always about the cop and the waitress.
- 28:50Right. And at the end of the film, when after the court proceedings,
- 28:54after they lose everything, he runs to a restaurant, finds her there.
- 28:58Or Nick Cage runs the restaurant, finds her there, and they decide that they're just going
- 29:03to be happy together.
- 29:04They don't need the money.
- 29:05Isaac Hayes, who's been very clean cut and very well dressed the whole film, shows up
- 29:11as a homeless man, like knocking at the window when they're closed, looking for food and
- 29:16they bring him in, they feed him as they're kind of having their own private moment.
- 29:20He's got a wrist mounted camera. Yeah, that's some Dick Tracy shit.
- 29:25And it's just fucking weird. Snapping photos of them.
- 29:28And he's been writing these newspaper headlines the entire film.
- 29:33Yeah, they just got to give it up like, oh, he's a reporter for the Post.
- 29:37And well, and then he runs out of the restaurant, he runs into a car and takes off the Jerry
- 29:42Curl wig he's wearing.
- 29:43Yeah. It just that was such like he could have just been an angel.
- 29:49He's Angel Dupree is his name, and it wouldn't have changed the movie at all.
- 29:54And it would have actually been better without that weird third act twist.
- 29:58Yeah, they kind of I don't know.
- 30:01It's what inspires New York to give them the money.
- 30:03Yeah. Which.
- 30:04OK, sweet. But just that was needlessly complicated and convoluted.
- 30:09It was a really weak plot device until the very end when they needed it to pay off.
- 30:15And that's what it was.
- 30:16I did. It's hokey.
- 30:17But I loved it. Yeah. Can we talk about how great a cop he is?
- 30:21Like the first three minutes of this film are just talking about how Charlie is just
- 30:28a good cop. He's a good cop.
- 30:29He's a good cop. And he's a good guy.
- 30:31What? And he's a good guy.
- 30:33One of the first things he like, we see a scene of a blind man crossing the street
- 30:37against the light in New York and cars are like screeching to halt.
- 30:41And Charlie just runs in the street, hoists the blind guy over his shoulder and like
- 30:45runs him to the other sidewalk. Yeah.
- 30:48We see him delivering a baby on a city bus.
- 30:50No, he ends every night between stickball with the boy with the neighborhood.
- 30:55Hey, Zou with Hazel on this on the street while his, you know, Rosie Perez being the
- 31:01worst 90s wife ever.
- 31:03She was so perfectly annoying.
- 31:05So one of her first lines in this film is her complaining to a customer while she's
- 31:09doing her hair about how her husband has no drive.
- 31:12He should at least be a detective, but no, he's got to wear that stupid uniform.
- 31:16And she utters the words, if he was if he was on the take, he'd at least have initiative.
- 31:22Yeah. And when they have their first argument in
- 31:25the film, she's saying how she hates living in Queen in a one bedroom in Queens.
- 31:28And he's like, it's fine. They're just bickering.
- 31:31And as he's leaving the bathroom after brushing his teeth, she just like yells out from the
- 31:37shower, I'm a person who needs money.
- 31:39Yeah, you can really tell what she's all about. The worst 90s wife ever.
- 31:44And when they do make it, when they do win the money, they go on a millionaire's cruise.
- 31:48He runs off the boat. Well, Bridget Fonda showed up.
- 31:52Yeah, he was having trouble with her cab to like help her out.
- 31:55And then the boat takes off without them.
- 31:56And they have a really nice date together.
- 31:59And when the boat finally comes back in, he's working out and excusing his head for where
- 32:04he was the whole night.
- 32:05And she didn't even realize he was back.
- 32:07Yeah, she was indifferent towards his presence.
- 32:10Well, she was baiting the hook for the next rich guy she was going to marry.
- 32:15I do appreciate the come up and she gets throughout the entire film because once they strike it
- 32:19big, they go on a shopping spree and they do the very 90s movie thing of the woman coming
- 32:24out in nicer clothes and the guy having more boxes throughout.
- 32:28Yeah. And when she comes out in her new fur coat
- 32:31and says she's finally happy, there's a premonition that she's going to get married.
- 32:36There's a protest for his murder protests going on.
- 32:39And she immediately just gets paint thrown on her.
- 32:41I do like that every time she buys something, she's got that line of like, oh, now I can
- 32:46finally be happy.
- 32:47Oh, now I'm comfortable.
- 32:50Now I now I have everything.
- 32:52And it's always like followed by one more shopping scene going from like Barney's and
- 32:57Tiffany's and all those other.
- 32:58I don't know.
- 32:59So what's the end for her?
- 33:02Her story is concluded like after the divorce, she gets with the rich guy from the cruise
- 33:11and the rich guy turns out to not be rich and just grifted her, took all of her money
- 33:16and ran away.
- 33:17Clears their bank accounts.
- 33:18Random.
- 33:19So then she gets a place in Brooklyn.
- 33:21She's living with her mom in Brooklyn and is a hairdresser.
- 33:24Not a hairdresser, a nail style.
- 33:27She only does nails now.
- 33:29She's a piece of shit.
- 33:30Yeah, she's real annoying.
- 33:32She is playing a very specific type of abrasive.
- 33:36Yes.
- 33:37As the film goes on, though, we do see.
- 33:40So at one point, Charlie semi retires from the force after he is shot in the line of
- 33:45duty.
- 33:46Stopping robbery at their favorite bodega.
- 33:50Yeah, Korean bodega, which they know is being robbed because when he goes in there, he asks
- 33:57how Son is the owner of the shop and asks how his wife's doing, or where his wife is.
- 34:03And Son says, oh, she's home with the flu and doesn't charge them for the coffee.
- 34:08So when Nick Cage leaves the bodega, he just goes to his partner and is like, they're being
- 34:13robbed.
- 34:13Like what?
- 34:13And like Son said, his wife has the flu and his partner goes, man, that bitch would work
- 34:20if she's dying.
- 34:22And then she.
- 34:24Yeah, she didn't charge him.
- 34:26So yeah, didn't charge me for the coffee.
- 34:29It's like, oh, well, he is getting robbed then.
- 34:31So Nick Cage goes in through the basement, comes up, takes out one of the criminals with
- 34:37a can of beans from about five yards and then just he gets shot.
- 34:44It's not fucked up and tackles another guy through the glass door.
- 34:50I was saving that all day.
- 34:51That was good.
- 34:52Yeah, and I like that he tackles him through the door and he like gets up and his partner's
- 34:59like, oh, blah, blah, blah.
- 35:01And then Nicholas Cage notices that he gets shot in the arm and he just like faints.
- 35:06Yeah, he just straight down on the guy he tackled again.
- 35:10And the next scene is him getting like, you know, a medal for valor and he donates ten
- 35:16thousand dollars of their winnings to the Policeman's Widows Fund.
- 35:19And you can just see Rosie Perez just fuming.
- 35:23Yeah, that ten thousand dollars of their two million is gone.
- 35:25Yeah, she is not a good person.
- 35:27No, no.
- 35:29And that I mean, that's something we could talk about, like the things that Nicholas
- 35:32Cage or Charlie Lang spent this money on is like donations to the Widows Fund.
- 35:38Charlie and Yvonne went down and like bought like train fare.
- 35:46Just had several tokens for everyone.
- 35:48And just started giving them out and like treating everybody.
- 35:51Which is what starts the divorce proceedings because when well, no, it's the next one.
- 35:56When they go to the baseball park.
- 35:58Yeah, they take all the kids from the neighborhood to bring all the kids there.
- 36:01Baseball at a Yankee Stadium, whatever it is.
- 36:05But I fucking love that one because I mean, that was just cool and it was really cool
- 36:09what they did.
- 36:10So like the kids were able to all play down on the diamond.
- 36:13Nick Cage and his partner were like doing the pitching and everything.
- 36:18And then they also set up this like photo op for the kids so they could jump on a trampling
- 36:25and get a picture of them like, quote unquote, catching a ball as it was going over the wall.
- 36:31So it was really nice.
- 36:33It was fun.
- 36:34Yeah, I liked it.
- 36:35Very sweet.
- 36:35You can see the start of their relationship because at this point, because Charlie and
- 36:40Muriel, not Muriel, Charlie and.
- 36:42Yvonne.
- 36:44Yvonne.
- 36:45No funny business.
- 36:46They're just they clearly are attracted to each other, but neither one of them is actively
- 36:50pursuing it while he is married.
- 36:52It's not till he gets kicked out of the house that they.
- 36:56Stoop.
- 36:57So but you see the early parts of those relationship and this is what really sold me on Nick Cage
- 37:03being a leading man because I'm like, I remember being in love at one point.
- 37:08Yeah.
- 37:08Now I'm just cold and dead inside.
- 37:12And that's a great segue for one scene I do want to talk about.
- 37:15Oh, let me hear it.
- 37:17When Charlie comes home after being shot, like the next scene is Charlie coming home
- 37:23and his house is full of construction workers and his apartment is completely torn apart.
- 37:29And I'm just and I'm just sitting there thinking about the time I walked into my home
- 37:33and I no longer had a floor.
- 37:35Yeah, I wasn't told about when I left the house that morning.
- 37:39That's a hard one to come home to.
- 37:41Yeah, no, it's never fun to come home to.
- 37:44No.
- 37:44So and then when he's like, where's my chair?
- 37:47And Rosie Perez is like, I donated to Goodwill.
- 37:51It's like, you could have told me.
- 37:53And her response is like, you know, I thought we, you know, just gave stuff away without
- 37:57telling each other.
- 37:58Yeah.
- 37:59It's like the one time she gets a proper dig in.
- 38:01It was a good day.
- 38:02I hated seeing her in that hard hat, though, just walking around with that clipboard.
- 38:08I wanted to like push her down in the dirt, not not hit her or anything.
- 38:13She wasn't trying to kill him.
- 38:14Although there are definitely times like, oh, when he tells her about the two million
- 38:19dollars, like giving that away, just like, oh, these two are going to fucking beat each
- 38:25other up like that is murder.
- 38:27Like people are murdered for less.
- 38:29I don't think Charlie Lang would have ever lifted a hand against anybody that wasn't
- 38:35clearly breaking the law.
- 38:37He did grab her at one point.
- 38:38Sure.
- 38:38That was her lawyer's reasoning for him being an abusive husband.
- 38:44The whole the whole civil case against him and Yvonne is just that's probably the one
- 38:50part of the movie.
- 38:50I'm like, this is the least interesting aspect of this and completely bullshit.
- 38:56Charlie doesn't want any of the money.
- 38:57He's like, you can keep the lotto winnings.
- 39:00You know, I don't want anything.
- 39:01I don't want need money to be happy, but she wants the money he gave away.
- 39:05And the whole court case is it was her lotto ticket.
- 39:08Even though he bought it, the city of New York, you know, decided against them.
- 39:15Yeah.
- 39:15They had to give back all the money.
- 39:17Which is pretty wild.
- 39:18That jury sucked.
- 39:19Yeah, seriously.
- 39:21Who would have sided with her, honestly, with Rosie Perez?
- 39:25Yeah.
- 39:25Well, she has such a charming voice.
- 39:27Yeah.
- 39:28Well, you notice she was never on the stand.
- 39:30Oh, wait, she was.
- 39:31Yeah, because she talked about her dead dad's.
- 39:33The dream she had, which I'm oh, God, Charlie had the worst lawyer.
- 39:37I'm like, fucking no, there's no way to prove that.
- 39:39That is completely inadmissible.
- 39:41Like, yeah.
- 39:41Testimony.
- 39:42I don't know.
- 39:42There were a lot of details in this movie that I really enjoyed.
- 39:45Weird little things.
- 39:47And none of them had any impact on it.
- 39:49Like, I really loved Angel's tie, his lobster tie that he was wearing at the top of the
- 39:55movie.
- 39:56I loved when they were robbing.
- 39:58Those guys were robbing the bodega.
- 40:00And like, as they were about to run out the door, one guy's like, give me a carton of
- 40:06Virginia Slims.
- 40:07You're going to knock over a bodega and take the silliest looking, like, you know,
- 40:12Well, and like, lady brand cigarettes.
- 40:14When they're robbing, when they're robbing that, well, they're men of weak constitution.
- 40:18When they're robbing the bodega and Charlie's coming in from the basement, he knocked,
- 40:22he like walks into some bottles.
- 40:25So the crime, the thieves upstairs like, what was that?
- 40:27What's back there?
- 40:28It's like nothing.
- 40:29There's no entrance back there.
- 40:30Just, you know, a basement.
- 40:31It's like, what was that noise?
- 40:33Like rats, really big rats.
- 40:35And then Charlie's coming up the stairs and there's a conveyor belt going up the stairs.
- 40:40There's just a giant fuck all rat just like chill in there, just waving at him.
- 40:44Yeah.
- 40:44And a New York rat.
- 40:45Yeah.
- 40:46So we briefly, you touched on this.
- 40:48So this is based loosely on a true story.
- 40:51Cop named Robert Cunningham was a regular diner for years.
- 40:57Phyllis Penzo was a waitress there for years.
- 41:01And one day while he was having his lunch, he asked Phyllis for some lotto numbers.
- 41:04She gave him three.
- 41:05He came up with three more and he jokingly said, you know, if this wins, you know,
- 41:11he'll tip her half the next day.
- 41:13And the next day they won that night.
- 41:15And the next day Robert and his wife came in and gave her half the money.
- 41:19It's so loosely inspired by real events.
- 41:22But I'm like, that's pretty cool.
- 41:25From a Hollywood standpoint, this is a better movie than the real events.
- 41:29Yeah.
- 41:30And the fact that, you know, that could happen in the world is...
- 41:33It could happen to you.
- 41:34Hey.
- 41:35Oh, nice.
- 41:36I'm going to stop rambling.
- 41:38That's a perfect spot to end that.
- 41:39Do you have a quote for this film?
- 41:41Yeah, I've got again, I've got a couple lines that I enjoyed.
- 41:44Now, can I do mine since you have a couple?
- 41:46Yes, you can.
- 41:46I mean, this goes back to the bodega and when Charlie goes in there to order coffee,
- 41:51the first thing he says to the owner's son is,
- 41:54son, how are things in the mysterious East?
- 41:59Like, oh, bad.
- 42:03I'm not sure which one of these I like better, but in the beginning,
- 42:08Charlie playing stickball with the kids and everything.
- 42:12And Uriel shouts down to him like, I just ordered Chinese food.
- 42:15Come inside. And he's like, I'll be in in a minute.
- 42:19And then he gets some shit from Heizu, the kid who's just like, what are you whipped?
- 42:24And Nicholas Cage just comes back with, no, I'm not whipped.
- 42:29I've got adult responsibilities.
- 42:31I do love Heizu.
- 42:32It was a nice interaction.
- 42:34Again, it's always Heizu.
- 42:35I think Heizu and Charlie had the best kind of interactions for me.
- 42:41Heizu asked him if he killed anybody today.
- 42:44And Charlie just comes back with didn't even wound anybody.
- 42:48I've been really slow.
- 42:52And now we have two Nick Cage kids who don't suck.
- 42:55That's true.
- 42:56We got Heizu.
- 42:57My rule is quickly a Heizu and handpan.
- 43:00Yeah.
- 43:01Balancing the scales.
- 43:02I do.
- 43:03I really did enjoy their his relationship with just the neighborhood, the kids.
- 43:09Yeah.
- 43:09Just a genuinely sweet guy.
- 43:12It really came across like this guy loves the neighborhood.
- 43:17He loves living in Queens.
- 43:19I mean, there's a lot of like, I guess, Burrow pride in people out in New York.
- 43:24I don't know.
- 43:25Unless you're Rosie Perez.
- 43:26Well, she sucked.
- 43:31Yeah, she sucked.
- 43:32But yeah, I mean, what did you think of him overall in the role?
- 43:35Leading man, romance, hokey, nice guy cop.
- 43:39He was such a good just every man in this film.
- 43:41Like he's a cop and he's clearly in good shape, but they never really.
- 43:47We don't get any shirtless cage in this.
- 43:49No, just too cheesy.
- 43:50They also don't like, you know, they don't give him hair plugs.
- 43:53They're not trying to like hide the fact that he's got kind of a receding hairline.
- 43:58Why are you looking at the top of my head?
- 43:59I'm looking at your mouth for some reason.
- 44:02That's why I'm doing it.
- 44:04That's for you, Mayor.
- 44:07Yeah, no, he's good.
- 44:08He did a great job.
- 44:10I think he gave me a cop that I didn't hate.
- 44:13I didn't want to ask you about that.
- 44:15No, no, I will not say fuck this cop.
- 44:18This cop was all right.
- 44:19Fuck all cops, but Nick Cage in this one movie.
- 44:23The director on this hasn't directed much, but is a character actor.
- 44:29A lot of TV stuff.
- 44:31The one that stuck out to me was he was in an episode of Titus.
- 44:34Oh, yeah, I saw that.
- 44:35Yeah.
- 44:36And he ends up matching up with Cage again later with Honeymoon in Vegas.
- 44:40Yep, interesting.
- 44:42I think also interesting is kind of the director of photography,
- 44:45Caleb Deschanel, father of Zoe Deschanel and Emily Deschanel of Bones and New Girl.
- 44:51I was about to ask you that when I remembered you and I had this conversation.
- 44:53Yeah, so he worked together with Cage on this and then later in National Treasure.
- 45:00So we'll be coming back to the old Caleb Deschanel.
- 45:02I think the only other thing I wanted to say is that I had such a huge crush on Bridget Fonda
- 45:07when I was growing up.
- 45:08She's she's real cute.
- 45:09Well, just I was really torn with these movies as to which one I thought had the more
- 45:15endearing female lead.
- 45:17Right.
- 45:17Like they both crushed it.
- 45:19Well, they were both really good.
- 45:21I mean, I loved both of these characters, these characters and the way they were portrayed by
- 45:25these actresses, but just both of these got me in what remains of my feels with
- 45:31Sean Penn's first his first love, like that early young love.
- 45:35The first time you see some boobs, the first time you jump naked in a lake and then have sex by it.
- 45:40You've all done that.
- 45:42You mean the time we got to see Sean Penn's nutsack in a PG movie?
- 45:46Yeah.
- 45:46Yeah.
- 45:47I mean, you see two nipples.
- 45:48It's just a little nutsack.
- 45:50Yeah.
- 45:50But just a little nutsack.
- 45:52It's still good.
- 45:52It's still good.
- 45:53No, it was a fine nutsack.
- 45:55It's not.
- 45:55But no, both these movies brought me back to different parts of my growth as a human
- 46:01being and just being reminded of like the sweet awkwardness of young love and how you
- 46:05do so much for your first quote unquote love for no other reason than it's new and exciting.
- 46:13And you've never felt these feelings before as in racing with the moon and kind of in
- 46:18it could happen to you because we find out that Rosie Perez was
- 46:22It was his high school girlfriend.
- 46:23High school girlfriend and the only person he'd ever been with until him and Yvonne
- 46:28touched butts later.
- 46:29I can say that I've never grown as a human, so I can't identify with your statement.
- 46:33But then, you know.
- 46:34I came out of the womb just like this.
- 46:36That's terrifying.
- 46:37I've also been a slightly older person who was fairly settled in my life and
- 46:43met someone new and also had that kind of new and exciting change.
- 46:48Like I related to Sean Penn and Nick Cage and both these movies in their weird romantic
- 46:55endeavors.
- 46:55Also, I do want to just say the one joke that really did get a good laugh out of me in
- 47:01It Could Happen to You when Yvonne's talking about her ex-husband Eddie who was an actor
- 47:08and was talking about if they ever had a son, they should name the kid Al Pacino.
- 47:12Al Pacino Biasi.
- 47:13Yeah.
- 47:15Weird.
- 47:15Tucci was so good in that role.
- 47:17I love finding the parallels, like the little things that both movies have.
- 47:23And it keeps coming up in our things.
- 47:25But sometimes this one's just even a little detail.
- 47:28Both movies featured the leading man in a roller skating scene and not knowing how to
- 47:35skate.
- 47:36Yeah.
- 47:36Nicholas Cage ends up skating into the lake at Central Park and Sean Penn just ends up
- 47:44getting like, I don't know, skate thrown.
- 47:48Cracked the whip.
- 47:50You look that up?
- 47:51No, I lived in a small town for a while and all we had was a roller rink.
- 47:55Nice.
- 47:55So yeah, they cracked that whip and he got launched right out the door.
- 47:59Yeah.
- 47:59But he handled it very well.
- 48:00I enjoyed that.
- 48:01Both got their penises touched because of this endearing act later.
- 48:06Oh yeah.
- 48:07Specifically because they're not good at skating.
- 48:09I remember that line.
- 48:10It's like, I'm only doing this because you can't handle roller skates.
- 48:14I'm just going to start trying out things I see in Nick Cage movies on future dates.
- 48:17Do it.
- 48:18I highly recommend it.
- 48:19Start with Ghost Rider.
- 48:20Light myself on fire?
- 48:23Yeah.
- 48:24And then wiggle your bony bones.
- 48:27OK.
- 48:29With that, I mean, I know what I think should go forward.
- 48:39I'm actually really curious what you guys think should advance because I had a hard time picking on this one, unlike fucking last week.
- 48:46OK, so I'm going to say I think it should be It Could Happen to You.
- 48:49Yeah.
- 48:50It's a Nick Cage film.
- 48:52Yeah, that's the thing that was really hanging me up on it, too.
- 48:56It's like I actually prefer Racing with the Moon.
- 48:59I just enjoyed it more.
- 49:01But it's a Sean Penn movie with a supporting Nicolas Cage.
- 49:06It Could Happen to You is a good movie.
- 49:08Yeah.
- 49:08I enjoyed watching it.
- 49:09But I mean, we're finding the best Nicolas Cage movie.
- 49:13And that's a Nicolas Cage movie.
- 49:15Yeah.
- 49:15Like, Nick Cage is really good in Racing with the Moon.
- 49:18I highly recommend anybody watching Racing with the Moon.
- 49:20Totally.
- 49:21Like I said, this is, I think, the first time we have a head to head of two really enjoyable films.
- 49:26Yeah.
- 49:27And we didn't really talk about it.
- 49:29But the heaviness of the subject of Racing with the Moon is so, I don't know, it felt like I was not prepared for it to be a movie.
- 49:38That the central conflict revolved around getting an abortion.
- 49:43We're already talking about two people are getting ready to go to war and the movie gets heavy.
- 49:48Yeah.
- 49:49And, you know, but also their personal lives and Nicolas Cage's specific cavalier attitude of going off to war has consequences and it's handled very well.
- 50:00Yeah.
- 50:00I think no matter what, I mean, we're going to push It Could Happen to You forward.
- 50:05But people should watch Racing with the Moon.
- 50:08Agreed.
- 50:08It's a good movie.
- 50:09And I think I could watch It Could Happen to You more often just because it is popcorn fluff a lot of the time.
- 50:15Yeah, it's super light.
- 50:16It's easy to watch.
- 50:17And it's so charming.
- 50:18It is.
- 50:19All right.
- 50:19So speaking of two very good banger movies to watch next time, we have World Trade Center and The Frozen Ground.
- 50:27That'll be our funniest comedy podcast yet.
- 50:30Definitely.
- 50:31I can't wait.
- 50:31I'm going to crush so many beers before this.
- 50:34Oh, boy.
- 50:34It's going to be a good one.
- 50:36Yeah.
- 50:36So you heard it here, folks.
- 50:38This is Cage Match.
- 50:40Rate us on whatever you listen to podcasts on and subscribe.
- 50:43Yeah.
- 50:44Don't forget to drop some comments down there in the down below.
- 50:48We need more in the down below.
- 50:54Yeah, no, I could hear it.
- 50:56Don't gargle.
- 50:58How did it feel?
- 51:02Like that.
- 51:04I could feel like I need this in my life.
- 51:08Are we all going to do it?
- 51:10No, don't do it.
- 51:12I don't recommend it.
- 51:18Oh, yeah, you have a weak throat.
- 51:20No, I got in my nose when you made me laugh.
- 51:24Well, that's a trick.
- 51:26Never make me laugh.
