- 0:00If your hit rate of the tests is high
- 0:03enough, I think you can
- 0:04squeeze more with ABO.
- 0:06If your hit rate is
- 0:07bad, then stick with CBO.
- 0:09It never happens that a
- 0:10good ad is not running.
- 0:11You know, it's always running somewhere.
- 0:13Maybe if it died in testing,
- 0:14it's running somewhere else.
- 0:15So like often the first thing that I do
- 0:17when I take over a new ad account,
- 0:18I go like a year or two back and I find
- 0:21all ads that are above the target ROAS
- 0:24that spend significantly.
- 0:25I take their post ID and in most cases,
- 0:27like seven or eight out of ten,
- 0:29like ends up being performers.
- 0:31People just forget that they had a winner
- 0:33like, you know, a year ago.
- 0:34That winner is a still winner.
- 0:35Obviously, it's not
- 0:36going to scale massively,
- 0:38but I have some ad accounts where like
- 0:39those old ads are like
- 0:41running for like a few years.
- 0:43It felt like I got a recognition when
- 0:45Facebook confirmed
- 0:45that a different thumbnail
- 0:47actually means different entity ID
- 0:49because like I was, I did not know why,
- 0:51but like four or five years went back in
- 0:53the day when I worked with Yudi,
- 0:54I realized that a different thumbnail can
- 0:56impact the performance of the same video
- 0:58in a different way.
- 0:59So still me and all of my media buyers
- 1:01and my junior media buyers,
- 1:03everybody are picking
- 1:03thumbnails manually.
- 1:04I think it has a positive impact.
- 1:07And now let's take a listen to the
- 1:15Scalability School podcast.
- 1:17Welcome to another episode of the
- 1:19Scalability School podcast,
- 1:20your favorite podcast for tactical advice
- 1:24on running your
- 1:25e-commerce brand or agency
- 1:27or agency accounts under that are brand.
- 1:30So here's the thing.
- 1:31We have a legend on the podcast today,
- 1:34and I'm going to pronounce publicly his
- 1:37name properly or attempt to.
- 1:40Marin Ishtvan Itch.
- 1:43Did I get close?
- 1:45This is perfect.
- 1:47Okay.
- 1:48Who I have been mispronouncing my good
- 1:49friend's name for three years
- 1:52since we've known each other
- 1:53or four years actually
- 1:55we've known each other.
- 1:55So I also, this is a theme of my life
- 1:59because I also have the owner of socio,
- 2:03Karen.
- 2:04I've been calling Karan for six years.
- 2:09And he recently just had the guts to tell
- 2:10me that I was mispronouncing it.
- 2:12So anyway, here we
- 2:13are pronounced properly.
- 2:14Everybody knows and loves this guy.
- 2:16I've sent so many people to your YouTube
- 2:18channel to learn how to do Facebook ads.
- 2:21And an absolute legend.
- 2:23Marin, welcome to the show.
- 2:24Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 2:26I'm not sure how I'm going to
- 2:27justify all these big words,
- 2:29but I definitely want to return the
- 2:32gratitude because like I
- 2:34was listening to your podcast,
- 2:37you know, 2019, the e-commerce influence,
- 2:40probably like I've stumbled upon it
- 2:42randomly during one of my,
- 2:44I know, searching on the
- 2:46internet for a good content.
- 2:48I was like, wow, how did I
- 2:49did not know about this guy?
- 2:50It was like in the early beginnings of my
- 2:52media buying when you
- 2:54were definitely a role model.
- 2:55So I appreciate that.
- 2:57I mean, welcome to episode
- 2:59one of Glazing the Podcast,
- 3:02where we glaze each other and talk about
- 3:04all the good things.
- 3:05Brad, Brad's really smart.
- 3:08Brad's smarter than me.
- 3:09So there's the pride glaze.
- 3:10So let's just jump right into it.
- 3:12By the way, Marin has spoken at three
- 3:16events now for the
- 3:19Foxhole founders in Europe.
- 3:20And everybody always comes to me and is
- 3:21like, that was so great.
- 3:23Because you're such a tactician, Marin,
- 3:26with your hands on the wheel.
- 3:28So as a tactician, let's get into the
- 3:30debate that everybody
- 3:31wants to know right away,
- 3:33which is ABO versus CBO.
- 3:36Okay.
- 3:37What are your thoughts?
- 3:38We're only going to spend a few minutes
- 3:40on this, but everybody wants to know.
- 3:41What are your thoughts?
- 3:43So if your hit rate of
- 3:45the tests is high enough,
- 3:47I think you can squeeze more with ABO.
- 3:50If your hit rate is
- 3:51bad, then stick with CBO.
- 3:53Yeah.
- 3:54I think I don't disagree
- 3:56with that for what it's worth.
- 3:57Like I know I'm on the
- 3:58opposite side, generally speaking,
- 4:00when it comes to the ABO versus CBO.
- 4:02I think if I had to
- 4:03add my little summary,
- 4:05I think the bet that you're making when
- 4:07you choose between them
- 4:08is that you are going to either be right
- 4:12more often than meta
- 4:13or at a bigger scale that kind of offsets
- 4:16maybe the downside of being wrong.
- 4:18And I think you've
- 4:19said this before, right?
- 4:19Like that's a function of hit rate, but
- 4:22it's also a function of scale.
- 4:23If you hit a winner that
- 4:24meta missed on and it can scale
- 4:26and weigh in excess of what you spent on
- 4:28the creative test that didn't hit,
- 4:30it probably doesn't
- 4:31actually end up mattering.
- 4:32The only reason I
- 4:33generally start with CBO is,
- 4:35and for a lot of people is maybe their
- 4:37hit rate isn't great.
- 4:38And it kind of prevents the downside,
- 4:40especially as brands are
- 4:41kind of getting to scale.
- 4:43Yeah, definitely.
- 4:44So CBO is like more conservative.
- 4:45And like when the budget is not high,
- 4:47when we have too many
- 4:48tests or the hit rate is low,
- 4:50I use CBO when I'm into scaling.
- 4:52And I know that like from 10 tests,
- 4:54I will get like at
- 4:55least three, four winners.
- 4:56That means I'm getting three, four
- 4:58winners every week from the 10 tests.
- 5:00If I test 20, I get seven, eight.
- 5:03Maybe I will not be able to scale them
- 5:04like, you know, from 100 to 2K.
- 5:07But like if I scale it from 100 to 500,
- 5:09and I have like seven
- 5:10of those ads a week,
- 5:11that adds up.
- 5:12And I don't need to scale every ad.
- 5:15I need like, I don't know,
- 5:16I need one, two great ads.
- 5:18And then I need like
- 5:1910, 15 supporting winners.
- 5:21And ABO allows me that
- 5:22a bit more than the CBO.
- 5:24But I definitely agree.
- 5:26Yeah, sorry.
- 5:27No, I didn't mean to cut you off.
- 5:29I was just going to ask, like, have you,
- 5:30have you gone down the route or do you
- 5:32have a kind of a tactic for,
- 5:33I saw somebody on Twitter X recently say,
- 5:37you know, they will
- 5:38run their creative tests.
- 5:39And then if they don't work,
- 5:40they'll still maybe throw
- 5:41them in to a cost cap campaign
- 5:43or kind of keep it live somewhere else.
- 5:45Like when I go CBO, it's
- 5:48generally, I'm keeping the ads on.
- 5:49I just don't generally turn them off
- 5:51unless there's a good
- 5:51reason to turn them off.
- 5:52Maybe they do end up sucking
- 5:53or they're super out of season
- 5:55or something like that.
- 5:57But I'm just wondering
- 5:58if there's like small,
- 5:59little tactical things
- 6:00that you pull forward.
- 6:02Yeah, so I don't have that
- 6:02kind of like zombie campaign.
- 6:04The reason is anytime
- 6:06ads shows attraction,
- 6:09I would take it post ID and I
- 6:10would run it somewhere else.
- 6:12So I never, it never happens
- 6:14that a good ad is not running.
- 6:17You know, it's always running somewhere.
- 6:18Maybe if it died in testing,
- 6:20it's running somewhere else.
- 6:21So like often the first thing that I do
- 6:23when I take over a new ad account,
- 6:24I go like year or two back
- 6:26and I find all old ads
- 6:29that are among the target rows
- 6:31that spend significantly.
- 6:32I take their post ID and in most cases,
- 6:34like seven or eight out of 10,
- 6:36like ends up being performers.
- 6:38People just forget
- 6:39that they had a winner,
- 6:41like, you know, a year ago.
- 6:42That winner is a still winner.
- 6:43Obviously it's not gonna scale massively,
- 6:46but I have some ad
- 6:47accounts where like those old ads
- 6:49are like running for like a few years.
- 6:52Yeah.
- 6:52Do you have a cadence for like going back
- 6:54and revisiting old ads?
- 6:55Cause like maybe you guys
- 6:56even have turned things off
- 6:57in the past.
- 6:58Yeah, that's a good thing.
- 7:00As I said, like there's always,
- 7:01this ad that was decent,
- 7:03it's always running somewhere.
- 7:05So when I take over,
- 7:07I find those ads and
- 7:08they're always running
- 7:09with some kind of budget,
- 7:10with a different audience,
- 7:11with a different attribution setting,
- 7:13with a different bidding.
- 7:14You know, they're
- 7:15always running somewhere,
- 7:16at least with some budget.
- 7:17So I don't get into position
- 7:19that there's an ad that was good
- 7:21that is currently not active.
- 7:23Yeah.
- 7:24Well, you said
- 7:24something interesting there.
- 7:25I don't want to, you know,
- 7:26we can start to deviate off the ABO
- 7:27versus CBO a bit here,
- 7:29but you mentioned the different audience.
- 7:31And so I think some people hear audience
- 7:33and they're like,
- 7:34wait, you're actually doing,
- 7:35like you're doing more than just broad.
- 7:37And so maybe,
- 7:38maybe just want to
- 7:39spend a couple of minutes
- 7:39talking through that.
- 7:41Yeah, I know it's 2026.
- 7:44And like,
- 7:45if I said that,
- 7:46like I'm using interest,
- 7:47people are saying like,
- 7:47okay, what, why?
- 7:49But the thing is,
- 7:50like I find they can have cheaper CPM,
- 7:54they can get me lower frequency,
- 7:56and it's my way of
- 7:57amplifying the winners.
- 7:59So let's say if I have
- 8:00an ad in testing that,
- 8:01I don't know,
- 8:02it was running for two months,
- 8:03then it died,
- 8:04I would take it post ID,
- 8:05I would group it with some other winners
- 8:06that also died,
- 8:08and I would run them with
- 8:09some interest audiences.
- 8:11And as I said,
- 8:12like it's,
- 8:13it's a nice addition.
- 8:14It's not something that's scalable.
- 8:15It's not something that like,
- 8:18you know,
- 8:18is massive unlock.
- 8:19But let's say if I'm
- 8:20spending 20K in testing,
- 8:22I'm spending 20K in scaling.
- 8:25And then like,
- 8:26there's like 5K a day
- 8:27that's running in interest audiences
- 8:29where I badge the winners.
- 8:32Are these ads that
- 8:32you're running predominantly?
- 8:34So I would say 70% of my clients are US,
- 8:3810% is Canada,
- 8:3910% Australia,
- 8:4010% UK.
- 8:43Yeah, yeah.
- 8:44Yeah,
- 8:44it's,
- 8:44I,
- 8:45so it's interesting about the,
- 8:46the interest thing.
- 8:47I think I agree with you
- 8:49that there tend to be marginal wins,
- 8:51especially when you're spending
- 8:52at a really high level with interest.
- 8:54And I don't think
- 8:54that's necessarily wrong
- 8:55to do that.
- 8:57So I appreciate you calling that out.
- 8:58So let's talk,
- 8:59let's transition to talking about
- 9:00tactics that are working right now.
- 9:04There's a lot of
- 9:05things that you talk about
- 9:06on a regular basis.
- 9:09One of them is whitelisting at scale.
- 9:12This is talking about
- 9:13a ton of whitelisting profiles
- 9:14that are running,
- 9:17you know,
- 9:17not partnership ads,
- 9:19dark posts that don't show
- 9:20on the influencer's timeline,
- 9:23multiple influencer touch points
- 9:24in the same session.
- 9:26Yeah.
- 9:26So you went and said,
- 9:28whitelisting,
- 9:30you spent 1.2 million versus brand
- 9:33and the cheaper CPC,
- 9:36it was a dollar cheaper CPC
- 9:37and a way better North Beam ROAS
- 9:39at 1.29 versus 0.76.
- 9:43Talk about whitelisting scale
- 9:45and your sauce there.
- 9:47Yeah.
- 9:47So basically we realized
- 9:49that no matter the client,
- 9:51when we introduce whitelisting,
- 9:52especially from the authority pages,
- 9:54so let's say if you're in pet space
- 9:56and you find a veterinarian,
- 9:58if you're in,
- 9:58I don't know,
- 10:00pain,
- 10:01then you find a like pediatrician,
- 10:04if you're like in a
- 10:05skincare dermatologist,
- 10:06so like those people
- 10:07tend to have like bigger influence
- 10:10on regular users.
- 10:13They add credibility.
- 10:15The fact that
- 10:16when you're running through
- 10:16the multiple pages
- 10:18at the same session,
- 10:19you can see different ads
- 10:21at the same time,
- 10:22although it is the same advertiser
- 10:23just running through
- 10:24the different pages.
- 10:25When you run through
- 10:26the brand page,
- 10:26you can see one ad per session.
- 10:28So it creates that sense
- 10:29that everybody's using the product.
- 10:31So we then just like
- 10:32built a massive flywheel
- 10:34of these influencers
- 10:35that we actually put
- 10:39into our ad account.
- 10:40So like for our internal brand,
- 10:41I think we tested
- 10:42more than 300,
- 10:43400 whitelisting profiles.
- 10:45So basically every week,
- 10:46I'm testing like between
- 10:47five and 10 new profiles.
- 10:50And like, again,
- 10:52it creates a sense
- 10:53that like every single authority
- 10:55in this space
- 10:56is using our product.
- 10:58Obviously, this is quite expensive
- 11:01at the scale
- 11:01because, you know,
- 11:02these influencers
- 11:03that are authorities,
- 11:05like I have some girls
- 11:06that we're paying
- 11:07like 20K per video
- 11:09plus usage, right?
- 11:11But those are like,
- 11:11you know,
- 11:12those are proven influencers.
- 11:13Those are authorities.
- 11:14Those are people that I know
- 11:15no matter the ad I launch,
- 11:16it will be a winner.
- 11:17So I pay 20K,
- 11:19but I spend 20K a day.
- 11:21So basically I offset that
- 11:22in a week, you know.
- 11:24Yeah, there's,
- 11:25and there's a bunch of different
- 11:26like levels to this.
- 11:27So I'm curious,
- 11:27like does the,
- 11:28does the partnership,
- 11:30whitelisting,
- 11:30however,
- 11:30like all of that,
- 11:31does that differ
- 11:32depending on the scale
- 11:33that the brand is at?
- 11:34Like if they're spending
- 11:35less than 2K a day
- 11:37or less than 5K a day,
- 11:39are you approaching
- 11:39in a different direction?
- 11:41It sounds like maybe
- 11:41you try to go
- 11:42for the expert and authority people
- 11:43first,
- 11:44regardless of scale.
- 11:45Yeah,
- 11:46obviously in clothing,
- 11:47you cannot,
- 11:48there's no expert.
- 11:49So you just go people
- 11:50that fit your avatar.
- 11:54Obviously the less you,
- 11:55the less you're spending,
- 11:57the less people
- 11:57you can actually have
- 11:59because they're
- 12:00sometimes more expensive.
- 12:01But we try,
- 12:02I would say like
- 12:03as you scale,
- 12:03you get actually
- 12:04more of those people.
- 12:05So that's the,
- 12:06that's the main,
- 12:07it kind of like
- 12:08goes with the volume.
- 12:09Yeah.
- 12:09And the two follow-up
- 12:10questions to that,
- 12:12how are you finding
- 12:12these people in general?
- 12:14And then the follow-up
- 12:14to that would be,
- 12:15how are you,
- 12:16and I know it depends,
- 12:17you just,
- 12:17you just said it depends
- 12:18based on the person,
- 12:19but like,
- 12:19what does the general
- 12:20partnership agreement
- 12:23look like with that person?
- 12:24It's fixed plus percent
- 12:25to spend,
- 12:26it's just percent to spend,
- 12:27who cares what that
- 12:27would look like?
- 12:28Okay,
- 12:28good question.
- 12:29So first question,
- 12:29how do we find them?
- 12:31So we have,
- 12:31for our internal brand,
- 12:32we have like four people
- 12:33in the influencer team
- 12:34that is just like
- 12:35finding people
- 12:36and negotiating.
- 12:38We leverage some tools
- 12:40like Facebook
- 12:41Creator Marketplace.
- 12:42It was a terrible tool
- 12:43until a few months.
- 12:45Now it's amazing tool
- 12:46and my influencer team
- 12:47tells me that like
- 12:48they find more people there
- 12:49than any other software.
- 12:52Also,
- 12:53we started using,
- 12:54I think it's Super Bloom.
- 12:57It's an agency
- 12:57that helps that.
- 12:59Basically,
- 12:59but like we're on that level
- 13:00that we can pay,
- 13:02you know,
- 13:03four or 5k
- 13:03for an influencer
- 13:04because we know
- 13:05there's a script
- 13:06that works.
- 13:07Obviously,
- 13:08when you're smaller,
- 13:09it's just like,
- 13:09you know,
- 13:09reaching manually
- 13:10to people on Instagram
- 13:12or to create a marketplace.
- 13:14Facebook marketplace
- 13:15is better
- 13:15because you know
- 13:16these people already know
- 13:17what that process looks like.
- 13:20They already have
- 13:21the pages set up.
- 13:22So it's easier
- 13:23in terms of the payment.
- 13:25It's mostly,
- 13:27so initially we have deals
- 13:28that we pay them
- 13:29for content
- 13:30and then we repurpose
- 13:31that content
- 13:32for an ad.
- 13:34Now we are just paying them
- 13:35to get the content.
- 13:36So you don't even have
- 13:37to post it on your page.
- 13:38I just want your handle
- 13:39and I just want
- 13:42to be able
- 13:43to run the ads
- 13:44through your page.
- 13:44They give us video,
- 13:45raw video.
- 13:46We chop it up
- 13:47into three,
- 13:48four different hooks.
- 13:48We send it for approval.
- 13:50We send the ad copy
- 13:50for approval.
- 13:51We send the access
- 13:53to get the,
- 13:54a request
- 13:55to get the access.
- 13:56Once they approve
- 13:56that,
- 13:57I have the access.
- 13:57I launch that ad
- 13:58as a new ad set
- 13:59in my testing campaign.
- 14:02And literally,
- 14:02there's no brand
- 14:04that we work with
- 14:06that did not have
- 14:07a positive impact
- 14:08from introducing
- 14:09whitelisting.
- 14:11Yeah.
- 14:12Do you see
- 14:12that there's,
- 14:14does the,
- 14:15does the type
- 14:16of influence
- 14:16or maybe type
- 14:17is the wrong question.
- 14:18It's like,
- 14:18does the scale
- 14:19of their following matter?
- 14:20Have you seen
- 14:21any correlation
- 14:21or not really?
- 14:23So,
- 14:23the big ones
- 14:25definitely work better,
- 14:27but
- 14:27smaller ones
- 14:29can surprise
- 14:30and can also,
- 14:31you know,
- 14:32get you
- 14:33some surprising wins,
- 14:34especially if the,
- 14:35if the video is good,
- 14:37but I still think
- 14:38the sauce is in the script.
- 14:40It's just like,
- 14:40this is like
- 14:41amplification.
- 14:44Why I don't like,
- 14:45you know,
- 14:46running partnership
- 14:46because when I see
- 14:47a person
- 14:49with brand,
- 14:50it screams
- 14:51that this is an ad
- 14:52to me.
- 14:52Like,
- 14:52it's just,
- 14:53I know this is an ad
- 14:54and I scroll past it.
- 14:55When I see just a person,
- 14:57okay,
- 14:57this like looks something
- 14:58that I could,
- 14:59I could engage with
- 15:01and I think
- 15:01that's why it works.
- 15:02Well,
- 15:03I forgot to ask
- 15:03and answer the question
- 15:05about the pricing.
- 15:06So,
- 15:07it really depends.
- 15:08Usually,
- 15:08it is,
- 15:09it is a fixed fee.
- 15:12We try to get them
- 15:13on an affiliate,
- 15:14like on a percentage
- 15:15of spend
- 15:15because that's better
- 15:16for me.
- 15:17There's a lower risk
- 15:18and I'm okay paying
- 15:18you more
- 15:19if you're actually
- 15:20getting me the results.
- 15:21It will be
- 15:22hypercritical for me
- 15:23because I charge
- 15:24percentage of spend.
- 15:25So,
- 15:25you know,
- 15:26I think that's a fair deal
- 15:27to get to the influencer,
- 15:29but majority of them
- 15:30are still like,
- 15:30I don't know.
- 15:31I would rather you pay me
- 15:32and then like
- 15:34in 30 days,
- 15:36we evaluate.
- 15:36If we have 30 days access,
- 15:37we evaluate
- 15:38whether
- 15:39the ROAS
- 15:41that they got
- 15:42and the spend
- 15:43is like revenue,
- 15:44whether that offset
- 15:45their fee
- 15:45and whether we actually
- 15:46made money.
- 15:48If yes,
- 15:48then we kind of like
- 15:49trade to negotiate.
- 15:50I have some person,
- 15:51I have some people
- 15:52that like we are extending
- 15:53rides from July
- 15:54last year,
- 15:55you know,
- 15:55because it just works.
- 15:57So,
- 15:57it's like running
- 15:58for like nine months
- 15:58and we're just extending
- 15:59every month.
- 16:01Yeah,
- 16:01I have one more question,
- 16:03Andrew,
- 16:03and then I'll pause
- 16:04and shut up for a second.
- 16:05But this might transition
- 16:06actually into one of the
- 16:07follow-up questions here
- 16:08or the next topics,
- 16:09but are you doing anything
- 16:10special with the
- 16:11account structure
- 16:12for these tests
- 16:13or are they just going
- 16:14into their own,
- 16:15they're going into
- 16:15their own creative
- 16:16testing campaign?
- 16:17They're just going
- 16:18into their own ad sets.
- 16:19So,
- 16:19each creator
- 16:20is in its own ad sets.
- 16:21So,
- 16:21if I'm launching
- 16:2120 tests a week,
- 16:23I have 20 ads
- 16:24a week
- 16:24that I set
- 16:25and I launch
- 16:27tests from
- 16:27Wednesday or Thursday.
- 16:29I avoid launching
- 16:30stuff on Monday
- 16:31and Tuesday
- 16:31because my goal
- 16:33is to get
- 16:33at least one
- 16:34winning variation
- 16:35of these
- 16:35video that they
- 16:37get me.
- 16:38So,
- 16:38I know it can
- 16:39sound overwhelming
- 16:40because like,
- 16:41I know,
- 16:41in a month,
- 16:41I could potentially
- 16:42have 100 tests,
- 16:44which is 100
- 16:45ad sets.
- 16:46So,
- 16:46someone could see
- 16:47that and like,
- 16:47okay,
- 16:47what is this?
- 16:48But actually,
- 16:49out of those 100,
- 16:50I'm getting like,
- 16:50you know,
- 16:5140 that are
- 16:52decent performers.
- 16:54Very good background
- 16:55on whitelisting
- 16:56and how it's
- 16:57working for you.
- 16:57So,
- 16:57I appreciate you
- 16:58getting into that.
- 16:59One other thing
- 16:59you've talked about
- 17:00is cost cap
- 17:01weakened scaling,
- 17:03which is
- 17:04ASC
- 17:04with cost cap
- 17:06using different
- 17:06attribution windows.
- 17:09seven-day click
- 17:09versus seven-day click
- 17:11plus one-day view.
- 17:13And,
- 17:13essentially,
- 17:14the different
- 17:15attribution forces
- 17:16people kind of
- 17:16Facebook to find
- 17:17different types of people.
- 17:19And,
- 17:19with the cost cap,
- 17:20your point is like,
- 17:21look,
- 17:21Meta does the scaling
- 17:22for me.
- 17:23You talk about
- 17:24this strategy
- 17:24and what else
- 17:26is how you do it,
- 17:27how you set it up
- 17:27more specifically.
- 17:29All right,
- 17:29friends,
- 17:30quick break.
- 17:30This episode
- 17:31is brought to you
- 17:31by Northbeam,
- 17:32the marketing
- 17:33attribution platform
- 17:34that we love
- 17:34over here
- 17:35at Scalability School.
- 17:36If you're a marketer,
- 17:37I mean,
- 17:37you probably agree,
- 17:38right?
- 17:39Incrementality testing
- 17:39is broken.
- 17:40These tests require
- 17:42tons of labor,
- 17:43spreadsheets,
- 17:44statistical reference,
- 17:45and the designing
- 17:47of a test
- 17:47is slow and error-prone.
- 17:48How are you supposed
- 17:49to know what to test
- 17:50in the first place,
- 17:51right?
- 17:51There's a million factors
- 17:52that can make
- 17:53incrementality testing
- 17:54difficult.
- 17:55But,
- 17:55the good news is
- 17:56Northbeam has completely
- 17:57changed the game
- 17:58and they fixed this.
- 17:59Only Northbeam
- 18:00incrementality
- 18:00automates your
- 18:01incrementality test
- 18:02design and monitoring
- 18:03while protecting you
- 18:05from the major mistakes
- 18:06that plague
- 18:06incrementality testing.
- 18:08Northbeam builds tests
- 18:09using your own
- 18:10MTA data,
- 18:12launches them directly
- 18:12in ad platforms,
- 18:13and automatically
- 18:14monitors them
- 18:15throughout.
- 18:16If something
- 18:17threatens validity,
- 18:18you're alerted
- 18:18before it ruins
- 18:19the result.
- 18:20With Northbeam,
- 18:21you can launch
- 18:22tests in platform
- 18:23with a single click,
- 18:24saving you tons
- 18:25of time and reducing
- 18:26any chance
- 18:27for errors.
- 18:28And when the
- 18:29test concludes,
- 18:30your results flow
- 18:31straight into your
- 18:32MTA,
- 18:33meaning you can
- 18:33easily see results
- 18:34alongside the rest
- 18:35of your data.
- 18:37Incrementality
- 18:37was broken.
- 18:38Northbeam fixed it.
- 18:39Point is like,
- 18:40look,
- 18:40Meta does the scaling
- 18:41for me.
- 18:42You talk about
- 18:43this strategy
- 18:43and what else
- 18:44is how you do it,
- 18:45how you set it up
- 18:46more specifically.
- 18:48Yeah,
- 18:49so everybody
- 18:50knows that I don't
- 18:51like Cost Cap
- 18:51for testing,
- 18:52but I really,
- 18:53really love them
- 18:53for scaling.
- 18:55I realized that
- 18:56two years
- 18:57for one Black Friday
- 18:58and I was like,
- 18:59okay,
- 18:59I have this scaling
- 19:00campaign,
- 19:01but I realized
- 19:02that I don't want
- 19:03to have the same ad
- 19:04in a different campaign
- 19:05without a reason.
- 19:06So,
- 19:06okay,
- 19:06if it's different
- 19:07optimization,
- 19:08okay,
- 19:09highest volume
- 19:10or highest volume,
- 19:11value,
- 19:12yeah,
- 19:12yeah,
- 19:13so if I move that
- 19:14or if I change
- 19:14the attribution setting
- 19:15or if I add interest,
- 19:17that in my eyes
- 19:18tells Facebook,
- 19:19okay,
- 19:19this is slightly different.
- 19:20So,
- 19:21I'm okay
- 19:21with kind of like,
- 19:23I have the tests
- 19:24in my testing
- 19:25and I keep scaling them.
- 19:26Sometimes I get
- 19:27from 100 to 300.
- 19:28Sometimes I get
- 19:29from 100 to 5K
- 19:31just because tests work
- 19:32and I continue
- 19:33to increase the budget.
- 19:34When I move the winners
- 19:35into scaling campaigns,
- 19:37so my scaling campaign
- 19:38is on 7 Day Click,
- 19:39I call this
- 19:40winners of the winners.
- 19:41It's like a gladiators arena.
- 19:43It's just one ad set
- 19:44and all of the winners.
- 19:45I don't care
- 19:46which ad is going to win
- 19:47because all of them
- 19:48are winners
- 19:48and I'm comfortable
- 19:49using cost cap
- 19:50because all of them
- 19:51are winners.
- 19:51So,
- 19:51if I put cost cap
- 19:52of 50,
- 19:53Facebook spending 55,
- 19:55I'm cool
- 19:55because it giving me volume
- 19:56but I know
- 19:57it will never spend 80
- 19:58because this is a proven ad.
- 20:00So,
- 20:00I'm okay,
- 20:01you know,
- 20:01leveraging manual bids
- 20:02for scaling.
- 20:03What you mentioned,
- 20:04Advantage Shopping Plus,
- 20:05the fact is
- 20:06that's the old
- 20:07Advantage Shopping Plus
- 20:08where we could define
- 20:09that percentage
- 20:10of spend for buyers.
- 20:12The thing is,
- 20:13like,
- 20:13I never turned it off.
- 20:14So,
- 20:15in 7 out of,
- 20:16like,
- 20:16say,
- 20:1710 ad accounts,
- 20:17I still have that OG
- 20:18Advantage Shopping Plus
- 20:19running.
- 20:21If I do not,
- 20:21then it's just one campaign
- 20:23with one ad set.
- 20:24As I said,
- 20:25I limit it to 7 Day Click
- 20:26because I found that
- 20:27that old Advantage Shopping Plus
- 20:29was doing a bit more retargeting
- 20:30regardless,
- 20:31you know,
- 20:32similar setup.
- 20:33So,
- 20:33I don't want Facebook
- 20:34over attributing
- 20:35on view sales
- 20:35that is not
- 20:37responsible
- 20:38and what's the beauty
- 20:39of this weekend scaling?
- 20:41I realized that
- 20:42conversion rate is better
- 20:43because more people
- 20:43are on the phone.
- 20:44So,
- 20:45there's,
- 20:46I never knew
- 20:46to what extent
- 20:47I can scale on a weekend.
- 20:48I know I can scale
- 20:49but I don't know
- 20:49whether I can increase
- 20:50from 1K to 2K
- 20:51or from 1K to 5K
- 20:53and how to increase
- 20:54that budget
- 20:54without actually disturbing it.
- 20:56So,
- 20:57if you would,
- 20:57like,
- 20:57look a graph
- 20:58of my campaigns,
- 21:00Andrew,
- 21:00I think I shared that
- 21:01on the Elizabethan presentation.
- 21:04My testing campaign,
- 21:05like,
- 21:05goes like this
- 21:06because I,
- 21:06like,
- 21:07I just increased
- 21:07the budget
- 21:08of what's working.
- 21:10My interest campaign
- 21:11is,
- 21:11like,
- 21:11it's always steady.
- 21:12It's always on,
- 21:13like,
- 21:13let's say 5K
- 21:14but the cost cap one
- 21:15is,
- 21:15like,
- 21:15you know,
- 21:16it's like this.
- 21:17On Tuesday,
- 21:17it spent,
- 21:18I don't know,
- 21:193K.
- 21:19On Thursday,
- 21:20it spent 7K.
- 21:21On weekend,
- 21:22it spent,
- 21:22like,
- 21:2225K
- 21:23just because it can.
- 21:24And I'm okay
- 21:25giving it,
- 21:26getting a higher,
- 21:27slightly higher CPA
- 21:28because it brings me volume.
- 21:30I have a million
- 21:31follow-up questions
- 21:32and,
- 21:32like,
- 21:32randomly specific things.
- 21:34So,
- 21:34I might be bouncing
- 21:36around a lot here.
- 21:36You mentioned
- 21:37the attribution settings.
- 21:38You mentioned
- 21:39a bunch of different things.
- 21:39Like,
- 21:39you could change something
- 21:40about the campaign
- 21:41or the targeting
- 21:42or whatever.
- 21:43Like,
- 21:43some of those settings
- 21:44to tell meta
- 21:45there's something
- 21:45different about this.
- 21:46Exactly.
- 21:47Do you actually
- 21:47scale by changing?
- 21:49Like,
- 21:49are you setting up
- 21:50maybe new ad sets
- 21:51with 7-day click,
- 21:527-day click,
- 21:531-day view,
- 21:537-day click,
- 21:541-day engage view,
- 21:551-day click?
- 21:56Are you actually playing
- 21:57with those
- 21:57as a scale mechanism
- 21:59at all?
- 22:00So,
- 22:00my first campaign
- 22:01is ABO testing
- 22:03on highest volume
- 22:05on 7-day click,
- 22:061-day view
- 22:06unless there's
- 22:07too many view conversions.
- 22:08So,
- 22:09basically,
- 22:09when I check
- 22:10into the ad account,
- 22:11if there's more
- 22:11than 25% view conversions
- 22:13and AOE is not 400+,
- 22:15I would use
- 22:16exclusively 7-day click.
- 22:18If,
- 22:18you know,
- 22:19everything looks fine,
- 22:20I would use 7-day click,
- 22:211-day view.
- 22:21Then,
- 22:22I would move
- 22:22the winners
- 22:23into that audience campaign
- 22:24as I mentioned.
- 22:25So,
- 22:25that's kind of like,
- 22:25okay,
- 22:25that's a different direction
- 22:26because I'm using audience.
- 22:28And then,
- 22:28the third direction
- 22:29is this 7-day click
- 22:30on manual bids,
- 22:32which is combining
- 22:32two different things.
- 22:34So,
- 22:34I think I pretty much
- 22:34covered that.
- 22:36Sometimes,
- 22:36recently,
- 22:37I started playing
- 22:38with incremental
- 22:38attribution
- 22:40or when the AOE
- 22:41is higher
- 22:41or there's,
- 22:42like,
- 22:42a lot of skews,
- 22:43then I would play
- 22:44with the volume.
- 22:46But I think I cover,
- 22:47like,
- 22:47four out of five things
- 22:48in those three campaigns
- 22:49of mine.
- 22:50So,
- 22:50you mentioned
- 22:51the OG AFCs
- 22:52and,
- 22:53like,
- 22:53the ability
- 22:53to set the percentage.
- 22:54Do you have,
- 22:55do you have,
- 22:55like,
- 22:55a playbook
- 22:56for retention campaigns
- 22:57or actually trying
- 22:58to go and reacquire customers?
- 23:01Most of my customers
- 23:02do not
- 23:03want to,
- 23:04like,
- 23:04reacquire customers.
- 23:05Some,
- 23:06I'd say,
- 23:06like,
- 23:07okay,
- 23:07but,
- 23:07like,
- 23:07if someone did not
- 23:08bought from you
- 23:10for,
- 23:11like,
- 23:11I don't know,
- 23:11six months,
- 23:12do you consider
- 23:12that person
- 23:13a new customer?
- 23:14If they say yes,
- 23:15then I would create
- 23:16a campaign,
- 23:17but I would create
- 23:17a separate campaign
- 23:18that's targeting.
- 23:19I would never allow
- 23:20that to be
- 23:21into my prospecting
- 23:22campaign
- 23:22because you can
- 23:23never trust
- 23:23Facebook with that
- 23:25if you just go
- 23:26for the lowest
- 23:27conversion.
- 23:27So,
- 23:27I would set up
- 23:28a different campaign
- 23:29going only
- 23:29for those customers.
- 23:31And that's mostly,
- 23:32you know,
- 23:32in some skincare
- 23:33or clothing.
- 23:34And also,
- 23:34during the promotions,
- 23:36people are,
- 23:37brands are okay,
- 23:37they're fine
- 23:38with going after
- 23:39those customers.
- 23:40So,
- 23:40then I would set up
- 23:41a campaign like that.
- 23:43Yeah.
- 23:43I have a question
- 23:44about just overlap
- 23:44in general.
- 23:45Like,
- 23:45you have multiple campaigns,
- 23:47you have a ton
- 23:47of different ad sets
- 23:48going on.
- 23:48Do you concern yourself
- 23:49with overlap?
- 23:50Or is like,
- 23:51hey,
- 23:51the number is going up,
- 23:53I'll pay attention
- 23:54to CPMR
- 23:54or something like that,
- 23:55but like,
- 23:56otherwise,
- 23:56the number is going up,
- 23:57it's fine.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 23:58So,
- 23:59I think,
- 23:59like,
- 23:59I definitely track
- 24:00CPMR and frequency
- 24:02and like,
- 24:03I'm cool with
- 24:04leaving an ad
- 24:04active if it has
- 24:06a bad CPA,
- 24:07but it has a very
- 24:08low frequency
- 24:08because it tells me
- 24:10that it's feeding
- 24:10top of the funnel.
- 24:12But I'm not going
- 24:12to turn off an ad
- 24:13that has a good
- 24:14performance just because
- 24:16it has a bad
- 24:16CPMR.
- 24:17And I think
- 24:18that it is
- 24:19healthy conversation
- 24:20that like,
- 24:20everybody are starting
- 24:21to measuring that.
- 24:22But I think
- 24:23we are going
- 24:23like in a bit
- 24:25like too extreme
- 24:26that like,
- 24:26okay,
- 24:26CPMR is better
- 24:27than the CPA.
- 24:28That like,
- 24:29that's not the case.
- 24:30Obviously,
- 24:30it is important,
- 24:31but it's also important
- 24:32that people see
- 24:33your ads
- 24:34multiple times.
- 24:35And when I have
- 24:36like,
- 24:36you know,
- 24:3730 different influencer,
- 24:39I have 10 different angles,
- 24:40I have,
- 24:41you know,
- 24:42that creative diversification,
- 24:43they're not actually
- 24:44seeing one ad
- 24:44for eight times.
- 24:45They're seeing like seven
- 24:46different ads.
- 24:47So I think that actually
- 24:48also is beneficial
- 24:50to an extent.
- 24:51Obviously,
- 24:51I'm tracking that
- 24:52with a tool
- 24:53that Andrew and Kurt
- 24:54built,
- 24:55which is super helpful
- 24:55for net new reach.
- 24:58And that's obviously
- 24:59one of the metrics
- 25:00that I measure,
- 25:01as well as the percentage
- 25:02of new visits
- 25:03in Norbeam.
- 25:04But it's not,
- 25:05you know,
- 25:05I'm not going to turn off
- 25:06a good ad just because
- 25:08it has a bad frequency.
- 25:09Yeah.
- 25:11Okay.
- 25:11Then my last question
- 25:11related to this is,
- 25:13I mean,
- 25:14it's kind of overlappy,
- 25:15but are you using
- 25:16the actual like experiments
- 25:17tab in Meta
- 25:18at all for anything?
- 25:20No.
- 25:20Okay.
- 25:21Really interesting.
- 25:21So no holdout tests,
- 25:23no A-B testing
- 25:23directly in Meta?
- 25:25No,
- 25:25no.
- 25:26If you're doing holdouts,
- 25:27it's mostly through
- 25:27House or WorkMagic.
- 25:29When you've done
- 25:30holdout tests,
- 25:32what have they
- 25:33shown you
- 25:34that's been useful?
- 25:35Cool.
- 25:36I ask because
- 25:37there's a lot of
- 25:37discussion about this now
- 25:39and, you know,
- 25:40Northbeam has
- 25:41an internal tool
- 25:42that is doing this,
- 25:44which I think
- 25:44is actually pretty good.
- 25:46And it's,
- 25:47I think it's something
- 25:48that as,
- 25:49especially as budgets
- 25:50go up and complexity
- 25:51starts to get bigger
- 25:52that like,
- 25:53it's huge for people
- 25:54to understand like,
- 25:54okay, look,
- 25:55you know,
- 25:56so much of our traffic
- 25:57from YouTube
- 25:57is actually converting
- 25:58on Amazon or whatever.
- 26:00So like,
- 26:01what types of stuff
- 26:01are you,
- 26:02have you seen
- 26:03that's been surprising
- 26:03or helpful to you?
- 26:05Yeah,
- 26:06potentially I can touch
- 26:07base on the incremental
- 26:08attribution.
- 26:09Again,
- 26:09like I know this is
- 26:10like a hot topic now,
- 26:11but when I do the breakdown
- 26:13in my ad accounts,
- 26:14like incremental
- 26:15turns out to be
- 26:1690 to 95%
- 26:18of seven day click attribution.
- 26:19So it's not really,
- 26:20you know,
- 26:21something game changing.
- 26:22I think it's like
- 26:22a tool in a toolbox,
- 26:24but I would not necessarily
- 26:25change my whole ad account
- 26:26to incremental
- 26:27just because
- 26:27Twitter is talking about it.
- 26:29In terms of the tests,
- 26:31so I did try,
- 26:32you know,
- 26:33add to cart
- 26:34and view content,
- 26:35never worked for me.
- 26:36Like I did five tests
- 26:37with two different platforms,
- 26:38never worked for me.
- 26:39So I'm not sure what,
- 26:41how come that's working
- 26:42for Ridge,
- 26:42but I mean,
- 26:43I guess it's working.
- 26:44In terms of the other channels,
- 26:46we found out definitely
- 26:47what you mentioned,
- 26:48YouTube has a way bigger impact
- 26:50on Amazon
- 26:51compared to just Shopify.
- 26:54We found that
- 26:55Google third-party pages,
- 26:57third-party funnels
- 26:58have bigger impact
- 26:59on overall performance
- 27:01than if it is visible
- 27:02in the ad account.
- 27:04We also had some success
- 27:06with Vibe
- 27:08on the CTV,
- 27:10but we realized
- 27:11that it's very hard
- 27:13to, you know,
- 27:14understand whether Facebook,
- 27:16which is spending like,
- 27:16you know,
- 27:1720, 30 times more
- 27:18than the Vibe,
- 27:18has an impact
- 27:19on good performance
- 27:20of Vibe
- 27:20or Vibe has a good impact
- 27:22on the Facebook.
- 27:24So we are going to do
- 27:25some additional tests there.
- 27:27Besides that,
- 27:28still did not do
- 27:30app loving tests,
- 27:31but that's on one
- 27:32of my clients' maps.
- 27:35So interested to see that
- 27:37because I know everybody
- 27:38are, again,
- 27:39think how they scaled
- 27:40app loving.
- 27:41I never managed
- 27:42to scale it.
- 27:43No matter if I'm spending
- 27:4450K a day on Facebook,
- 27:46I could not get app loving
- 27:48to spend more than 2, 3.
- 27:49So I'm not sure
- 27:50if I'm missing something
- 27:51or,
- 27:52but yeah,
- 27:53those are kind of like
- 27:54the main takeaways,
- 27:55at least from,
- 27:56you know,
- 27:57a couple of clients
- 27:58that are doing those tests.
- 28:00The only thing I would say
- 28:01on app loving,
- 28:02the only,
- 28:03we've seen,
- 28:03we've seen similar things
- 28:04to you where it's like
- 28:05most people just don't hit scale.
- 28:08But we had a conversation
- 28:08with Miranda months ago
- 28:11and that was like,
- 28:12I wrote down a whole,
- 28:14I had a whole notebook
- 28:14of notes,
- 28:15which I'm about to have
- 28:16with you.
- 28:17And I went back
- 28:18and I just like picked
- 28:19a couple of things
- 28:19and the thing that hit
- 28:20the best for us
- 28:21was changing the hooks.
- 28:23We did port over
- 28:24the meta
- 28:25creative directly
- 28:26and she said,
- 28:27she basically said,
- 28:27don't do that.
- 28:28But she says like,
- 28:29as a starting point,
- 28:30it's fine to do,
- 28:31but that's not where
- 28:32you're going to get
- 28:32the biggest bang for your buck.
- 28:33The biggest thing
- 28:34that made a difference
- 28:35for us from a creative perspective
- 28:36was literally just
- 28:36swapping out the hook
- 28:37to like be something
- 28:38about addressing the fact
- 28:39that we just interrupted
- 28:40their game.
- 28:41Like, hey,
- 28:41we'll get you right back
- 28:42to your game
- 28:42or sorry to interrupt your game
- 28:44or like something
- 28:45literally directly calling it out
- 28:46and it made a huge difference.
- 28:48Like the top performing ads
- 28:48were all starting
- 28:50with that hook
- 28:51and the rest of the,
- 28:52the rest of the,
- 28:53the video is the same.
- 28:54So interesting.
- 28:55I'll be curious
- 28:55to hear what you...
- 28:56How did you then try
- 28:57to get that creator
- 28:58to film a hook
- 28:59or was it the hook
- 28:59totally unrelated
- 29:00to the creator?
- 29:02Yeah.
- 29:03Because if you get
- 29:04like 20 winners
- 29:05and then like you get to,
- 29:06you have to ask
- 29:07like 20 people
- 29:07to actually refilm the hook.
- 29:09So was it just generic hook?
- 29:12Yeah, that's a really good question.
- 29:13In this specific case,
- 29:14the ones that stood out the most,
- 29:15it was an AI voiceover
- 29:16with creator B-roll.
- 29:18So we just,
- 29:18we were able to,
- 29:19the videos that were working
- 29:21in general
- 29:21were just kind of like
- 29:22B-rolled with voiceovers.
- 29:24So we were just able
- 29:25to swap out
- 29:25the messaging
- 29:26with an AI voiceover.
- 29:28That's...
- 29:29But I bet you'd have
- 29:29more success
- 29:30by like maybe taking
- 29:31your five best creators
- 29:33and asking them
- 29:34to film something
- 29:35really specific.
- 29:35That could be interesting.
- 29:37I haven't been able
- 29:37to do that yet.
- 29:38So if you do,
- 29:39you have to let me know
- 29:39how it goes.
- 29:40Sounds good.
- 29:41Yeah, you should start
- 29:42with like,
- 29:42hey loser,
- 29:43get off your phone.
- 29:45Yeah, you're just
- 29:46close to life.
- 29:48Yeah, exactly.
- 29:49Your kids in front of you,
- 29:51like why aren't,
- 29:51you know,
- 29:52make them feel really bad.
- 29:53That usually works.
- 29:54So let's talk about
- 29:55the hack segment
- 29:57a little bit briefly,
- 29:58which is like,
- 29:58what's the closest thing
- 29:59right now to a hack
- 30:01that you've seen
- 30:01inside meta?
- 30:02So you change this,
- 30:03it's like,
- 30:04and it is a dramatic shift.
- 30:05What are like one
- 30:06to two things
- 30:07that you,
- 30:07that you're adjusting
- 30:08that you're like,
- 30:09man,
- 30:09that's really an unlock?
- 30:10I mean,
- 30:11I like,
- 30:12I like hacks,
- 30:13but like,
- 30:13I don't think like hacks
- 30:14are just a nice addition,
- 30:15you know,
- 30:16like having a proper exclusion,
- 30:17having not reliance
- 30:19on existing buyers,
- 30:20no viewed conversions,
- 30:21like knowing when to scale,
- 30:23knowing how much to scale,
- 30:25that matters the most.
- 30:26And although I'm a media buyer,
- 30:27like,
- 30:28you know,
- 30:28product,
- 30:29offer,
- 30:30funnel,
- 30:30creative,
- 30:31they have way bigger impact
- 30:32than the media buying.
- 30:33I can make results
- 30:34when like client is spending,
- 30:36like everything else
- 30:37is dialed in,
- 30:38then the media buying
- 30:40again makes a difference.
- 30:41But you know,
- 30:42at like,
- 30:42at lower level,
- 30:43probably like focus
- 30:44on the offer,
- 30:45offer,
- 30:46like I've seen tremendous changes
- 30:48in the hit rates
- 30:48just by changing the offer.
- 30:51So that's definitely
- 30:52one thing outside
- 30:53of the ad account.
- 30:54Also remember,
- 30:55everything else
- 30:56outside of the ad account
- 30:57has a tremendous impact
- 30:58on the ad account.
- 31:00In terms of the ad account,
- 31:01I still pick
- 31:02all of my thumbnails manually.
- 31:04And like,
- 31:05I just kind of like,
- 31:06it felt like
- 31:07I got a recognition
- 31:08when Facebook confirmed
- 31:09that a different thumbnail
- 31:11actually means
- 31:12different entity ID
- 31:13because like I was,
- 31:14I did not know why,
- 31:15but like,
- 31:16I like for four or five years
- 31:19when back in the day
- 31:20when I worked with Yudi,
- 31:21I realized that
- 31:21a different thumbnail
- 31:22can impact the performance
- 31:24of the same video
- 31:25in a different way.
- 31:26So still me
- 31:27and all of my media buyers
- 31:28and my junior media buyers,
- 31:30everybody are picking
- 31:31thumbnails manually.
- 31:32I think,
- 31:33I think it has
- 31:33a positive impact.
- 31:35Although I must say,
- 31:35Facebook is getting better
- 31:36and picking that
- 31:37automatic thumbnail
- 31:38compared to,
- 31:39let's say,
- 31:39a year before.
- 31:41Yeah.
- 31:41It's funny.
- 31:42You basically don't like hacks
- 31:43and I agree.
- 31:44Like we put it in there
- 31:45intentionally
- 31:45because it kind of like
- 31:46pushes you to say,
- 31:47like pick,
- 31:47pick,
- 31:48have an opinion about hacks.
- 31:49And it's,
- 31:49it's hilarious
- 31:50because like you probably feel
- 31:51like you're repeating yourself
- 31:53pretty often
- 31:53and maybe the content
- 31:54that you make
- 31:55and you still get people
- 31:56that are like,
- 31:57they don't have exclusions.
- 31:58They're not using,
- 31:59you know,
- 31:59it's like you still see
- 32:00a million people
- 32:01who are just doing crazy shit
- 32:02and wondering why nothing's working.
- 32:04And sometimes it's just like
- 32:05those simple things
- 32:06ends up being the hack for them
- 32:07because they weren't doing
- 32:08in the first place.
- 32:09Yeah.
- 32:10So no,
- 32:11that's funny.
- 32:12One thing that we've,
- 32:13I'll throw in,
- 32:14I'll throw in one little hacky thing
- 32:15just as something
- 32:17that continues to work for us
- 32:18is just like customers
- 32:19that are uploading images
- 32:20as reviews,
- 32:21just taking them as is
- 32:22and uploading it as an ad
- 32:23gets you creative volume,
- 32:25gets you creative diversity.
- 32:26They're probably super blurry
- 32:28and that's the point.
- 32:29Like it,
- 32:29it just works really well
- 32:30and we just keep doing that on repeat.
- 32:32Yeah.
- 32:32Now that you mentioned that
- 32:33there's like something thing,
- 32:35like usually I found that
- 32:36for most problem solving product,
- 32:38images do mostly retargeting.
- 32:40We just do top of the funnel
- 32:41while like on,
- 32:42you know,
- 32:42on clothing,
- 32:43jewelry,
- 32:44images actually do the prospecting.
- 32:45So we found that like,
- 32:46I could not,
- 32:47like there's one client,
- 32:48like we're spending 50K a day,
- 32:49like 99% of my ads are videos.
- 32:52I could not get images to work
- 32:53and then we just replicated.
- 32:56It's a beauty client.
- 32:57We just replicated,
- 32:58you know,
- 32:59it felt like a story.
- 33:01It was like a text,
- 33:02organic text overlay,
- 33:04like what you would put on a story
- 33:05and it was just an image
- 33:06and like those ads are getting,
- 33:08I would say like 50% of delivery
- 33:11on story and reels
- 33:13and they feel organic
- 33:14and this is something
- 33:15that we finally managed to break out
- 33:18with images
- 33:19and got some traction.
- 33:20Again,
- 33:21I can't think because it looks organic.
- 33:23It's so interesting.
- 33:24I've been literally in the last,
- 33:26I mean,
- 33:27I've been thinking about it
- 33:27for longer than this,
- 33:28but like in the last two weeks,
- 33:29I've had this like weird obsession
- 33:30with like formats
- 33:32where like you can communicate
- 33:34the same message
- 33:35in a bunch of different ways,
- 33:36but also the type of content
- 33:38that somebody is consuming
- 33:39to your points,
- 33:40like stories and reels
- 33:41is different.
- 33:41Like Zach's a great example of this.
- 33:44Like they have compression socks
- 33:45for Holo
- 33:45and there's probably 80 year old dudes
- 33:47that are buying it
- 33:48and 30 year old nurses
- 33:49and the type of content
- 33:51that they're consuming
- 33:51is very different.
- 33:53It's like they expect
- 33:54a different format
- 33:54and so maybe it's the same,
- 33:56it ends up being the same message
- 33:57which your legs are going to hurt less
- 33:58or whatever it is,
- 33:59but how you communicate it
- 34:01and just even the style of creative
- 34:02can unlock different pockets
- 34:04of audience.
- 34:05So I like that.
- 34:06That's a good one.
- 34:08Nice.
- 34:08And those are easy to make too.
- 34:09Like those are easy.
- 34:10Yeah, exactly.
- 34:10They're super easy.
- 34:11Slap a question and answer on it.
- 34:13Exactly.
- 34:14So how are you just,
- 34:15how are you using AI by the way?
- 34:18Like, and by the way,
- 34:19if you haven't checked out
- 34:20the new Foxhole podcast,
- 34:21releasing or will be released
- 34:24by the time this comes out,
- 34:25AI D2C WTF,
- 34:28which is a new podcast
- 34:29I started up to talk about
- 34:30all this stuff even more deeply.
- 34:32But how are you using AI now?
- 34:33Is it with reporting
- 34:35or creating different variations
- 34:37or is it all that stuff?
- 34:39And if so, like what are you doing?
- 34:41Yeah.
- 34:41So I'm not on the level
- 34:42that Will is.
- 34:44Like when I see his conversation,
- 34:45Will, that was on some of your podcasts
- 34:48and like when I see the presentation
- 34:49that he did in this,
- 34:50I was like, okay, wow.
- 34:51Like I would never be able to do that.
- 34:53I did actually follow his template
- 34:54and I managed to get close,
- 34:56but I'm personally nowhere near that.
- 34:59What I like to do it
- 35:00is like for research,
- 35:02for like synthesizing the data.
- 35:04For example,
- 35:05I gave it my whole YouTube video
- 35:07for my whole YouTube channel
- 35:08and like I told it to create
- 35:09my media buying philosophy.
- 35:11It created like 50 pages document
- 35:13and then I uploaded that to Claude.
- 35:15And now like, you know,
- 35:16whenever there's a question,
- 35:17I can get an answer from that
- 35:20or like I can get a new script
- 35:22for YouTube based on my whole knowledge.
- 35:24That's one thing.
- 35:25The other thing is
- 35:26in terms of the ads,
- 35:27I gave it my top five spending ads
- 35:31and then I gave it one of my template
- 35:34of a listicle page that we are running
- 35:36and I told it to change the reasons
- 35:37based on the reasons,
- 35:39based on the angles from the ads.
- 35:40And that landing page is currently
- 35:42like that listicle is outperforming
- 35:44our current listicle,
- 35:46you know, by 10% of click rate
- 35:47and like it's getting a nice traction
- 35:49in Orbeam as well.
- 35:51So that would be one
- 35:51like practical example
- 35:54of me using AI.
- 35:56Besides that, you know,
- 35:57like when you're doing media buying,
- 35:59there's not much you can do
- 36:01compared to when you're a copywriter
- 36:03or developer or creative strategist.
- 36:04So it's just like mostly trying
- 36:07to kind of like improve my workflow
- 36:10and save some time either on analysis
- 36:13or on the reporting or
- 36:14synthesizing the data.
- 36:16I might be leaking something here.
- 36:17What do you use for creative reporting?
- 36:20It's mostly Motion or Atria
- 36:22depending on the client.
- 36:24Yeah.
- 36:25Motion has an MCP connector now.
- 36:27This is what I'm potentially leaking.
- 36:29I don't know if it's
- 36:29available to everybody,
- 36:30but they gave me access to it.
- 36:31It's awesome.
- 36:32It's like, I don't know if you use
- 36:33the chat feature inside of Motion at all,
- 36:36but it's really nice.
- 36:38You should reach out to them
- 36:40and just ask if they can turn on
- 36:41the MCP connector for you
- 36:42because it can pull all those AI tags.
- 36:45So like here's an example.
- 36:46You mentioned landing pages.
- 36:47You could say,
- 36:49hey Motion, can you go grab
- 36:50the top trending tags for me
- 36:51in the last 30 days
- 36:52for my messaging angle?
- 36:54Okay, so it's going to grab that
- 36:55and it's going to say,
- 36:56here's how the spend breaks down
- 36:57as a percentage of your ad account
- 36:59for this angle, this angle, this angle.
- 37:01You take the top spending one
- 37:02and then it can grab the messaging.
- 37:03So it can pull the scripts for those ads
- 37:05and it can give you the scripts
- 37:07and then it can synthesize it
- 37:09and write a landing page
- 37:09in the customer language
- 37:10from those top ads.
- 37:12If you wanted to,
- 37:12if you could set up a schedule in Cloud,
- 37:14like you could have that do it,
- 37:15just like present you
- 37:15a new landing page every week.
- 37:17That's a little overkill probably,
- 37:18but it's been fun.
- 37:20Yeah, basically that's what I did,
- 37:21but I did manually through Manus.
- 37:23Hey, here are the ads.
- 37:24Hey, can you transcribe me?
- 37:25Hey, here's the landing page.
- 37:26Hey, make it a landing page.
- 37:27So basically it was me involving,
- 37:28but if I can do that without me actually
- 37:31instructing all of that,
- 37:33that would be amazing.
- 37:33So I'll definitely check that out.
- 37:36Manus.
- 37:36I haven't played with Manus too much,
- 37:38but I feel like Zaka is going to
- 37:39ban me from the world
- 37:41if I don't start using it.
- 37:43You know they're going
- 37:43to be talking about it
- 37:44at the Meta Performance Marketing Summit
- 37:46quite a lot.
- 37:48So outside of the things
- 37:50that we've talked about,
- 37:51you know, I think one of the things
- 37:52that people look to you for
- 37:53is very, you know,
- 37:57deep tactical knowledge
- 37:59and deep understanding of this.
- 38:02How do you recommend people
- 38:04upskill themselves on these things?
- 38:07Like, I think there's so many sources.
- 38:09I mean, and,
- 38:10but I know that you sort of set out
- 38:13in building your name around education
- 38:15as well, right?
- 38:17Like you're, you're very good at that.
- 38:19How do you recommend people
- 38:20start to get better at this
- 38:21and really start to dive in?
- 38:24So, I mean,
- 38:25I don't know when I started,
- 38:27I went through the like whole Google
- 38:28and Facebook literature support
- 38:30to understand how the auction works.
- 38:31Obviously you don't have to do that.
- 38:32I did that like eight years ago,
- 38:34but like now I'm like spending five mil,
- 38:36seven mil a month
- 38:37and I'm still listening, you know,
- 38:38to five different
- 38:39podcasts on media buying.
- 38:42I'm going to probably not heard
- 38:43probably 90% of the stuff I already know,
- 38:45but you know,
- 38:46hearing Zach,
- 38:47hearing Brad,
- 38:48how he does,
- 38:49you know,
- 38:49that overlay of a testimonial image.
- 38:52Okay.
- 38:52That's a cool idea.
- 38:53Hey,
- 38:53doing this with MCP with Twitter,
- 38:55you basically just need one good idea
- 38:57because there's not
- 38:58much that you're missing.
- 39:00Obviously,
- 39:00if you're on a lower level,
- 39:02you have communities besides the podcast,
- 39:05obviously,
- 39:05Voxfield founders,
- 39:06shout out.
- 39:07If you're not there,
- 39:08you have to be there
- 39:09if you want to be serious
- 39:10about DTC and e-com
- 39:12and you have a library
- 39:14of free content on YouTube,
- 39:16like there's literally,
- 39:18you can start a brand tomorrow.
- 39:20You can start being,
- 39:21I don't know,
- 39:22whatever you want
- 39:23because the information
- 39:25is already out there.
- 39:26You just have to,
- 39:27you know,
- 39:28stay disciplined,
- 39:28stay consistent
- 39:29and try to like put it into action.
- 39:33It's not enough
- 39:33that you just like read about AI.
- 39:36You just have to try
- 39:37to build something with it.
- 39:38And I think that like,
- 39:40you know,
- 39:40transition from just absorbing
- 39:42the information
- 39:43to using information
- 39:44is actually what makes a difference.
- 39:47Well, Martin,
- 39:47thank you so much for joining us.
- 39:49A very rich episode
- 39:51full of so much knowledge
- 39:52and so much information.
- 39:53And, you know,
- 39:54I'm so grateful to you
- 39:55for all that you've taught me,
- 39:56all that you've taught founders
- 39:57and all that you've now taught
- 39:59listeners to the podcast.
- 40:00So thanks for coming on.
- 40:01And for those of you
- 40:02that don't know Martin,
- 40:03I recommend following him
- 40:04on all the channels
- 40:05that you can
- 40:06because I always learn
- 40:09something from your content.
- 40:09So thanks for putting it
- 40:10out there, my friend.
- 40:11Yeah, I appreciate you having me.
- 40:13I really enjoyed this episode.
- 40:14It was really good conversation.
- 40:15I think we covered
- 40:16a lot from the technical stuff
- 40:19and tactical all the way
- 40:20to the holistic.
- 40:21And yeah,
- 40:22if you have,
- 40:22if you guys have any questions,
- 40:24just hit me up on Twitter.
- 40:25I'll promise I'll respond
- 40:26unless you try to sell me
- 40:28your DM setting service.
- 40:31Maybe,
- 40:32maybe,
- 40:32maybe throw in a couple arguments
- 40:33on X as well.
- 40:34You know,
- 40:34a little banter back and forth.
- 40:37All right,
- 40:37take care.
- 40:42This episode is brought to you
- 40:43by the Foxwell Founders membership
- 40:46that Andrew and his wife,
- 40:47Gracie run.
- 40:48It has been absolutely pivotal
- 40:50for not just the Homestead team,
- 40:51but the Easy Street Brands team.
- 40:53We've had,
- 40:54I don't even know
- 40:54how many members
- 40:55are currently in there
- 40:56that are part of our ecosystem.
- 40:57But when it comes to anything
- 40:59from learning ads
- 41:00to understanding what's going on
- 41:01to building an agency
- 41:02to knowing retention,
- 41:04it's been absolutely useful
- 41:05for our team
- 41:06when they get stuck
- 41:07or they need help
- 41:08to just go there
- 41:08and resource all the other experts.
- 41:10So definitely would recommend it
- 41:11for anybody that's looking to,
- 41:13you know,
- 41:13take it a step deeper,
- 41:15try to get a little bit more knowledge
- 41:16on growth marketing
- 41:17and all the world DTC is.
- 41:19Yeah,
- 41:19I think one of the most
- 41:20incredible things about it
- 41:21is you can just like
- 41:21open up the Slack group
- 41:22every single day.
- 41:23You can pin your favorite channels
- 41:25for the topics
- 41:25that you care most about.
- 41:26And like every day,
- 41:27there's going to be somebody
- 41:28who just like,
- 41:29because they want to contribute
- 41:30something valuable
- 41:31to the group,
- 41:32you can go learn something
- 41:33every single day
- 41:34and it's going to be
- 41:35extremely useful.
- 41:36There's some ballers in there
- 41:37that you just get like
- 41:38the benefit of learning from
- 41:39that like for the cost,
- 41:41like you couldn't pay them
- 41:42that for their time,
- 41:43but through the membership,
- 41:44like you get access
- 41:45to some incredible people
- 41:46and tons of resources.
- 41:48Yeah,
- 41:48I mean,
- 41:48I think the biggest resource
- 41:49to me too
- 41:50is like the events
- 41:50that,
- 41:51you know,
- 41:51Foxwell Founders does.
- 41:52They've been able to do some,
- 41:53even in Wisconsin,
- 41:54even in the boring state
- 41:56of Wisconsin,
- 41:56which is pretty awesome,
- 41:58getting people together
- 41:59in person
- 41:59and able to have really
- 42:01just like honest conversations
- 42:02of what's going on,
- 42:03what's working for them now,
- 42:04you know,
- 42:04where they're at
- 42:05in their business
- 42:05and knowing that
- 42:06there's going to be,
- 42:07like Brad said,
- 42:08some real killers
- 42:08in the space
- 42:09in this membership
- 42:10that can help
- 42:11and are willing
- 42:12to take the time
- 42:12and help.
- 42:13So that's been
- 42:14a huge part of why
- 42:15a lot of our team
- 42:16have really enjoyed it as well.
- 42:17And the applications
- 42:18are now open
- 42:19if you're looking to join.
- 42:20Foxwell Founders,
- 42:21yeah,
- 42:22foxwellfounders.com.
- 42:23Go check it out.
- 42:24Go apply.
- 42:33The only way
- 42:34that we grow this podcast
- 42:35is by you sharing it
- 42:37with your friends.
- 42:38Honestly,
- 42:38like reviews kind of
- 42:39don't really mean anything
- 42:40too much anymore.
- 42:41They're really meaningful,
- 42:41but they don't do a lot
- 42:43for the growth
- 42:43of the podcast.
- 42:44And so sharing YouTube links,
- 42:47sharing Spotify links,
- 42:48sharing Apple,
- 42:49whatever we call it
- 42:50under the podcast app now,
- 42:52anything you can share,
- 42:53the better we're going to be.
- 42:55Guys,
- 42:56anything else
- 42:56you want to say on this?
- 42:57Yeah,
- 42:58please go check us out
- 42:59on YouTube.
- 42:59Rack up those views for us.
- 43:01We'd love to see it.
- 43:01And then subscribe.
- 43:02Make sure to subscribe
- 43:03on YouTube as well.
- 43:04And I relentlessly refresh
- 43:05the YouTube comments
- 43:06because it dictates
- 43:07my mental health for the day.
- 43:08So please say something
- 43:08nice about all of us.
- 43:11Thank you, everyone.
- 43:12Thanks for listening.
- 43:13Honestly.
