Transcript
- 0:00What if I told you that your anger, frustration, overwhelm, and resentment aren't always the
- 0:07problem?
- 0:08What if they're actually warning lights?
- 0:11Just like the dashboard we have in our car tells us when something needs attention, our
- 0:17emotions can alert us in the same way when a boundary needs attention.
- 0:23So the question isn't whether the warning light comes on.
- 0:27The question becomes whether we're going to pay attention before the engine breaks
- 0:32down.
- 0:36If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much, and wondering why peace still feels
- 0:41so hard to hold on to, you're in the right place.
- 0:45Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser, and your boundaries coach.
- 0:50Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on
- 0:55what actually matters.
- 0:57So that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more satisfying.
- 1:02So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 1:11Welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms.
- 1:13I am your host, Lori Grimes, and this is your midweek reset.
- 1:19So you may have noticed that this episode is arriving one day later than usual.
- 1:25Normally, I do midweek reset episodes on Wednesdays, but this week looked a little
- 1:31different because my daughter is away at summer camp, which gave me a rare opportunity to
- 1:38spend some quality one-on-one time with my 14-year-old son.
- 1:42We actually headed to Dallas and we got to see his first live play, which was Clue.
- 1:49And we got to visit a museum.
- 1:51We walked around downtown, we grabbed some lunch, and it was just an awesome time, just
- 1:57him and I together.
- 1:59And when I was driving home, I realized something.
- 2:01This is actually a real life example of what we are talking about in Monday's episode.
- 2:07So if you didn't hear it, Monday's episode was all about how boundaries are the foundation
- 2:12of organization.
- 2:14Sometimes healthy boundaries mean you're just choosing what matters most.
- 2:18So I could have pushed through and gotten this episode recorded and released on time
- 2:23like absolutely, but sometimes stewardship means recognizing that not every good thing
- 2:30can happen at the same time.
- 2:33Sometimes organization isn't about fitting more into your calendar.
- 2:38Sometimes it's about making intentional choices about where your time and your energy are
- 2:43going to go.
- 2:44So this week, I chose to invest quality time with my son and I am so grateful that I did.
- 2:52So thank you for your grace and your patience waiting for this midweek reset that is one
- 2:57day late.
- 2:58So now let's talk about warning lights.
- 3:01So if you've ever been driving down the road when a warning light pops up on your dashboard,
- 3:07a little scary, right?
- 3:09Maybe it's like the check engine light or you've got low tire pressure, um, whatever
- 3:14little light gets your attention.
- 3:17Most of us wouldn't see a warning light and think, uh, I'll just ignore that because we
- 3:22understand the light itself isn't the problem.
- 3:24It's alerting us to a problem that needs our attention.
- 3:29So wouldn't it be nice if boundaries came with warning lights?
- 3:35Wouldn't it be nice if a little light appeared before we found ourselves overwhelmed and
- 3:39exhausted and resentful or we're snapping at our kids or the people that we love?
- 3:45The truth is they do.
- 3:47God designed us with warning lights.
- 3:49They don't just show up on our dashboard.
- 3:52They're showing up in our emotions, like how we are feeling.
- 3:56So in Monday's episode, we talked about how boundaries are the foundation to organization.
- 4:00But today I want to shift a little and talk about how we recognize when a boundary needs
- 4:05some attention.
- 4:07So our emotions can provide valuable information.
- 4:12They're not meant to drive the car, right?
- 4:14We're not letting emotions drive the car, but they can tell us where to look.
- 4:19And one of these emotions is anger.
- 4:21James 1, 19 through 20 says, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow
- 4:27to become angry because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
- 4:32So notice, James doesn't say anger doesn't exist in the Christian life.
- 4:38He doesn't tell us to pretend it's not there, ignore it.
- 4:42He tells us not to let anger take control of our car.
- 4:46Anger is a poor, poor leader, but it can be a useful messenger and get our attention.
- 4:52So Paul says something similar in Ephesians 4, 26, he says, in your anger, do not sin.
- 5:00So Paul is acknowledging that anger will happen.
- 5:03But the question is, what are we going to do with that anger?
- 5:06So what if anger is less like a steering wheel and more like a warning light that just shows
- 5:11up on our car?
- 5:13What if the frustration you're feeling is trying to communicate something to you?
- 5:18So you've said yes way too many times, or you're carrying a bunch of responsibilities
- 5:24that actually belong to someone else.
- 5:26Or say your schedule has become crowded with good things, but they're pulling you away
- 5:30from the very best things that God's called you to.
- 5:34And say you've avoided a conversation that needs to happen, or you're keeping the peace
- 5:39on the outside when you can feel resentment growing on the inside.
- 5:44The warning light, again, is not the problem.
- 5:47The warning light is inviting you to get curious, to investigate this warning light.
- 5:53The same is true for overwhelm, exhaustion, and resentment.
- 5:57These emotions don't automatically mean that someone else is wrong, and they don't automatically
- 6:04mean that we are right, but they do deserve our attention.
- 6:09So instead of asking what's wrong with me, I want you to ask, what is this feeling trying
- 6:17to tell me?
- 6:19What boundary might need my attention?
- 6:23Or how about asking yourself, what responsibility am I carrying that doesn't belong to me?
- 6:30Or have I allowed someone else's priorities to take precedence over God's priorities for
- 6:36my life?
- 6:38So healthy boundaries aren't built from anger.
- 6:42Healthy boundaries are built from wisdom.
- 6:45So Paul writes in Ephesians 4 15, that we are to speak the truth in love.
- 6:50That's what healthy boundaries do.
- 6:52They tell the truth.
- 6:53They honor our relationships, and they help us to communicate our expectations.
- 7:00And they protect what God has entrusted to us.
- 7:04So many of us wait until we're angry to speak up.
- 7:08I used to do this all the time.
- 7:09I really thought anger was a boundary.
- 7:13Don't push me to anger.
- 7:14But that was a warning light, and it had been flashing for a really long time in my life.
- 7:20And I would just rage out.
- 7:22I would just go off, because it had been building for so long, and I was not paying attention
- 7:29until my engine broke down.
- 7:32So the goal is to pay attention when the warning light first comes on.
- 7:36So we need to be sensitive to these warning lights.
- 7:39Pay attention to your dashboard this week, guys.
- 7:42I want you to see when frustration shows up.
- 7:45I want you to get curious.
- 7:47Or when resentment appears, and overwhelm starts to build, I want you to get curious
- 7:53and start paying attention to the patterns.
- 7:55Like what is going on?
- 7:57Why is this happening?
- 7:59Let's take a step back and see, and ask God, Lord, what are you trying to show me here?
- 8:04Is there a boundary that needs my attention?
- 8:07Because sometimes we're just looking at the emotion as the problem, and like, I shouldn't
- 8:12be angry, right?
- 8:15And sometimes it's the warning light pointing us toward a healthier way of living.
- 8:20So I want you to remember that healthy boundaries aren't building walls to keep people out.
- 8:26They are not that, okay?
- 8:28They are about creating the margin, and the clarity, and the wisdom to live the life God
- 8:34has called you to live.
