- Sheena: So here we go. Welcome to Sweat Pretty, a new sweat community mini-series with Heather Gilbert, PA from Apre Skin. Every month we're sitting down for a quick, honest conversation about the aesthetics and wellness treatments you're curious about, but maybe don't know who to ask. No judgment, no pressure, and no question is off limits. So let's get into it. So Heather, we've already covered this in our episode together, but just for a little overview, when we say aesthetic treatments, what are we actually talking about? Heather: So aesthetic treatments can really be a very broad category. it can be things like skincare, lasers, injectables, treatments that simulate collagen, that work with your own biology. a lot of what I do is about preservation and rejuvenation. So maintaining what you have, not changing the way you look. I'm just helping you age more gracefully. Sheena: Amazing. Yes. so topic of today's first episode, because I have so many mom friends, just like women friends in general who They do get their Botox, they do go, they get their aesthetic, they get their wellness treatments, but their husbands don't know about it. So why do you think that they keep it so secret? And how can we Heather: You know. Sheena: make it where they don't have to? Heather: Right, I am in complete support of this. It's so funny, I always joke that I feel like the other woman in every relationship, because I get texts from wives that are just like these cryptic messages being like, hey, my husband's out of town, when can I see you? And I'm like, well, if anyone's reading my phone, they think that you're having an affair, but you're just seeing me. Sheena: Right. Heather: But no, I think that this idea that women need to hide their treatments from their significant others, from their husbands, from their family in general, is something that I really want to try to debunk as society. First of all, taking care of yourself is something we should not be ashamed of in any way. It's helping you age better long-term, so the you do now, the less you're gonna have to do down the line. And frankly, more and more men are coming to see me anyway, so why keep the secret? Sheena: Why keep the secret? And it's not like they're keeping the secret from their wives. I bet the wives are encouraging them to go in. Heather: Absolutely, my favorite appointments are actually the husband and wife teams. When they come in together, we Sheena: so close. Heather: usually do them like end of the day and they come in dress the nines, they come get their treatments done and they go to a nice dinner or something. It's just so much fun. Sheena: that's so cute. I think what a great date night or day date. Heather: Yes, exactly. I'm like, come get your talks, come make yourself feel better about yourself, and then continue on with a lovely day. Sheena: Yes, I love that. my gosh. So Heather, if a husband is listening to this and thinking, my gosh, my wife has an appointment with a PA, what is happening? What would you tell him? Heather: First of all, don't be afraid. It's going to be a wonderful supportive appointment. We're gonna talk through all the different options that are out there. wife might not even get anything done today, but we're just gonna have a great conversation about what is making her feel insecure and figure out ways to help her with that. The thing you should be most afraid of is her newfound confidence. Other than that, there's nothing to be afraid of. Sheena: that's what it's all about is bringing confidence and empowerment to women and people in general, you know, making them feel good in the skin they're in. Heather: Absolutely, everything that we do for ourselves, even if it's going to the gym or getting a massage, getting your nails done, those are all things that make us feel better and aesthetics is no different. The only difference is that as opposed to holding a weight, I might be holding a needle, but regardless, it's going to be helping you long term. Sheena: Yes. So speaking of that, like that aesthetics is no different. It's part of wellness. What are some of the biggest misconceptions that people might have about the treatments? Heather: I think there's a very negative connotation towards aesthetics in general because of some of the unnatural results that are out there. There's no question that there's been plenty of people that have well overdone the aesthetics world. Any Bravo star or Kardashian, sorry to call you out, but are very overdone. But I think, yeah, exactly. Well, and I think that Sheena: But no, call out, call out. Heather: idea is exactly where husband's mind goes. They think that Botox is going to give you cheeks like a Kardashian it's like, first of all, those are two completely different treatments. Those are very large financial investments that these people are having into their aesthetic treatments. And my goal is never to make you look like someone that you're not. My goal is to make you look like your best self at every stage of life. And so my treatments are never about just making you look good in this chair today. It's also about how it's going to look a year from now. Is it still going to look natural? Is it helping your body create more collagen and elastin? Sheena: Yeah. and it's so funny too because it makes me think. So I personally have never gotten Botox or filler or anything like that, but Heather: Not yet. Sheena: not yet. Not yet. But it's so funny because I've talked to my husband about it and that's exactly where he thinks. He thinks the overfilled, the over whatnot. And he's told me multiple times, he's like, That is the gateway in. It's just gonna snowball. If you go in and get Botox, you're gonna come back looking like a different human. That's like his fear, you know, from the get go. usually Heather: Sure. Well, and I guess maybe this would be really great for us send to our husbands, this little quick rundown of what aesthetic treatments do, because like you said, they jump from one conclusion to the other one. I was like, my God, Botox give you cheeks. It's like, well, no. when your wife comes home and says, well, she recommended doing a little bit cheek filler, that's why I got done today. Don't panic. It's usually one to two syringes, so about the size of one to two blueberries that we inject into your cheeks to help redistribute some of the fat pads and skin on your face. Sheena: Mm-hmm. So yeah, it's so small. And that's actually what I loved from our episode that we recorded a couple months ago was learning about how these treatments are actually rejuvenating and they help your skin. which was really cool, very fascinating to learn that it is about wellness and longevity. Heather: Right, it's also about knowing how your body ages as Sheena: Mm-hmm. Amazing. and then this is a question that actually I have read when I see and it could be it's from those ads that are advertising creams and whatnot. And so of course they're gonna throw Botox and neuromodulators under the bus, but it did say that those just freeze the muscle, but your skin, everything on top is still aging. So once in like five, ten or so years, you are gonna look terrible because the muscles are frozen, but the skin on top, you're not treating that with Botox. Heather: very good question. how I was really aging is that you're aging in multiple different layers, right? So you do want to reduce the movement of the muscles to have healthier skin because if you're not having as much movement, you're not gonna have as many lines So it is still helping on the skin surface level. However, every one of my patients is on a multimodality treatment plan. You don't just do Botox with me. You're doing great skincare, you're doing minimally invasive microneedling frequently, you're doing Biosimulators, we're really looking to target all the different avenues of why you're aging, not just one. Sheena: Mm-hmm. So multimodality sounds expensive. if someone's coming in and they have to have multiple things done, how do you do this with their budget? Heather: Well, first of all, it's a great conversation. Regardless of whatever I'm recommending, it's a conversation with the patient, not only for budget, but also for lifestyle. I think that's one thing that's really missing in aesthetics It's just someone saying, like, you should do this because you don't want to age. And it's like, well, have you asked them about their lifestyle? Do they go outside every other day? Do they coach a sport? what kind of things do you have to make sure that you understand about them and their medical history, make sure they get the right treatments? for Combating the budget side, what I usually do is one, have a great conversation. Two, we do offer financing if you're really preparing for some kind of event or something. But three, our relationships are long term and we plan things out to make it much more budget friendly and make sure that we're stacking our treatments appropriately to get the best results Sheena: Yes, that makes sense. And you do want to look at their experience of whoever's treating you, but also sometimes you see cheaper and you think, this is what I'm drawn to. But Is that something that you should automatically be cautious about or like seeing a really good deal could just be a really good deal? Heather: I would definitely say caution more than anything else. first and foremost, there are a lot of black market products out there, which there's been so many problems with recently. Of yeah, Sheena: really? Heather: you can buy Botox on the black market. It's awful. Awful. So if you're if you're seeing Sheena: get out. That's terrifying. Heather: a really good deal, it very well could be that. I'm not saying it is, but it could be. these products in general for us are very expensive. So the pricing comes from somewhere. if you're seeing something that's too cheap, probably too good to be true. You could be your getting yourself into some murky water with whether or not it's actually a product that you're paying for. other thing that you're paying for is is expertise. by someone charging a little bit more for a treatment, you know that you're getting well, you'd hopefully be getting a better treatment than with some Sheena: Mm-hmm. Heather: of these other places. We've all tried group on for things before and nine Sheena: Mm. Heather: times out of ten, they're not as good as you hope that they are. But you know, it's sometimes you do find great things, but I definitely would have some caution because this industry is just so expensive. Sheena: Yes, yes. It is expensive. But you know, I you see the horror stories of someone's face frozen or like lopsided and and that just sounds like a nightmare that it's just easier to avoid. Like Heather: Absolutely. and rightfully so. I do a lot of fixes for the Denver area and I see all kinds of different things. Sheena: Yes. for sure. Well, I love that you explained what to look out for, why these treatments are beneficial, just not for looks, but for wellness and longevity. But let's bring it back to the husbands. So if a husband sees an aesthetic appointment on his wife's calendar, what should he actually do? Or what should make a wife Not be afraid to share the calendar with her husband. Like not to have to hide it from him. Heather: Absolutely. Well, I think on side of husbands, don't panic. Be supportive. if she's coming to me, she has some kind of concern that she wants to address. And just because it's an a psychic appointment does not mean that she's gonna look like somebody else. She's gonna look like a fresher version of herself and help her age better long term. and I think wives, there's nothing to be embarrassed about. there's nothing to hide from your husband. This is about making yourself feel as good as you possibly can in the skin that you're in and help you age better. to really give you the confidence to tell everyone from the rooftops that you're doing this. Sheena: Yes, yes. I feel like so many people just want to hide it and be embarrassed by it. But it's like, the confidence that you get from just feeling better in your skin. And I will have to say, the husbands will benefit from the wife's confidence. Like in more ways than one. than one. Yeah. Heather: Absolutely. Yeah, I really sh at least should be saying you're you're welcome. Sheena: yes. Yes, definitely. So if a husband sees that appointment in the calendar, what is something that he should absolutely not say to her? Heather: You know, don't interrogate her. don't go down the road of like, what do you think you're gonna do? what's your plan for the day? What is Heather gonna do you today? but just be supportive. Be like, my gosh, I see you have another appointment. That's amazing. I hope you guys have a great time. I can see like I have the most supportive husband. Obviously, he knows a lot about the aesthetic industry. One by being a patient of mine, and two, he hears me talk about it every day. And having that support is so wonderful. Sheena: yes. I have a very supportive husband, but me telling him this, he will say or he has said, you don't need that, you already look good. Like this is something that you absolutely do not need. So what do you say to that response? Heather: I mean that's first of all it's the perfect response. He should say that. If he doesn't says anything else, I have words to say. he should be saying that you look beautiful and perfect. Sheena: Yeah, yeah. Heather: but I think the response is this is for me. is so this is something that I need for me. And there's nothing that's gonna trump that. Sheena: Yeah, we can have that supportive partner, but still if we're feeling something is lacking within and we just need that little confidence boost boost, you know, we go to the gym, we get the eyelashes, color our hair. We do all the things. This is just an extension. Heather: It is. It is. I think that's the other side that I don't think is talked about nearly enough in aesthetics. the idea that we are really helping you long term age better. So the more that we can do as prejuvenation and rejuvenations versus a complete overhaul, which usually is a facial plastic surgery down the line, this is a lot of things that we can do to help push back those ideas of those super invasive treatments. So the more that we can do now, the better you're gonna age long term. Sheena: So basically, husbands, if your wife has an appointment on her calendar, Heather: Don't panic. Sheena: Ask questions Heather: Get informed. Sheena: and let her make the decision that's right for her. And if your husband needs to hear that, send him this episode. I love it that little cheesy back and forth. Heather: Love it. more of it. I honestly want like the whole episode like that. Sheena: I think that was so cute. That Heather: It is so cute. Sheena: was fun. my gosh. Okay. So we wanna know what your questions are. What question do you have for us? Heather: nothing is off limits. Anything aesthetics, anything wellness, send it our way. Sheena: Send it our way. We plan on diving deep into one or two topics every month moving forward. And I am seriously so excited about this. I love a little mini episode. Heather: It's perfect. Sheena: It's perfect. And these are your questions, and we will go right into it. Heather: go out there and sweat pretty, We got you. Sheena: We got you. Tune in next month. we can't wait for your questions. Tune in Heather: We can't wait to debunk all things aesthetics. Sheena: Yes.
