Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Hello, my beautiful friends.
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: It is once again time for us to practice mindfulness together.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: Again,
- 0:05my goal here is to demystify mindfulness as much as possible
- 0:10and make engaging in a
- 0:11regular practice something that is easy and accessible for you
- 0:15and something that
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: you want to then do on your own even.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: That would be great.
- 0:19So once again,
- 0:20as a reminder,
- 0:21my definition of mindfulness is incredibly simple.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Mindfulness is a special way of paying attention to the present moment.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: with curiosity instead of judgment.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 0:32We're just paying attention to the present moment,
- 0:35noticing what we notice and going from there.
- 0:38So you tune into your breath and you just notice whatever you
- 0:42notice going on
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: within you,
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: whatever you notice going on around you,
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: your thoughts,
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: your emotions,
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: sensations,
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: sounds that you hear,
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: anything like that.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: And if you notice that your mind wanders
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: completely away from the present moment.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: it goes off into the past and rummages around back there,
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: or it goes forward off into the future.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Hey, we've all been there.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: It's no big deal.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: It happens to all of us.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: And you just kindly and gently guide your focus back to your breath.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: There's no need to curse yourself out or berate your wandering mind.
- 1:24There's no need to beat yourself up in that moment and go,
- 1:27God,
- 1:27no,
- 1:27I'm supposed to be present.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I'm supposed to be in the present moment.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: You don't need to do any of that.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: it's not a big deal.
- 1:34You just kindly and gently guide your focus back to your breath
- 1:39and back to the present moment.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: It's simple.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: It's gentle.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: You rinse and repeat as many times as needed in the session.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: And even if you do that a thousand times in one session,
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: that's still a successful mindfulness meditation.
- 1:56And one of my favorite things about mindfulness is that it lays
- 2:00a really beautiful
- 2:01foundation for any personal development or mindset work that
- 2:06any of us want to do.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Because at its core, mindfulness is awareness.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And awareness equals choices.
- 2:15So the more we practice becoming aware of our thoughts and
- 2:19emotions during
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: mindfulness meditation,
- 2:21the easier it becomes to notice our thoughts and emotions
- 2:26throughout our day and
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: then adjust our mindset and our focus as needed.
- 2:32We get to choose what do we want to do with this new
- 2:36information that we're
- 2:37gathering as we become more aware of our thoughts and emotions
- 2:40in general.
- 2:42So we can choose to keep replaying that audition and
- 2:48questioning the performance
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: that maybe we were so proud of only hours before.
- 2:53Or we can choose to kindly and gently guide our focus back to
- 2:59our initial positive
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: thoughts and feelings about that work.
- 3:05Because maybe when we first finished that tape,
- 3:08we were like,
- 3:09yeah,
- 3:09all right.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Okay, felt good.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: I'm going to send that off.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And then,
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: a couple hours later,
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: you're like,
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: well,
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: but,
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: but maybe that one moment really wasn't all that good.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: And maybe it really wasn't that great of a tape.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: And maybe, and do we want to keep spiraling in that direction?
- 3:25Or do we want to go back to our initial feelings and thoughts
- 3:29about the tape?
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: The choice is ours.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: And we can even choose in those moments to affirm for ourselves.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: I did my work.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: My work is done.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I'm moving on with my day.
- 3:41Because it's so easy for our mind to start tanking us when we
- 3:46get a little bit of
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: distance because it's like,
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: yeah,
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: but what if,
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: what if,
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: what if,
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: what if,
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: what if?
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: No, I did my work.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: My work is done.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: I'm moving on with my day.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: But that mindful awareness of our unhelpful,
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: self-critical thoughts about that audition,
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: that's the first step in deciding to make those new choices,
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: the choices that serve us better,
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: that serve our mindset much better.
- 4:12Because if we don't notice,
- 4:15oh,
- 4:15hey,
- 4:15wait a second,
- 4:16I'm torturing myself about this audition.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Hmm, do I want to keep doing that?
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: If we don't notice that,
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: then we stay stuck in that kind of icky,
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: angsty stuff of the self-tape,
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: all that self-tape self-doubt that can creep in.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And it becomes our choice whether or not we want to do that.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: So let's go ahead and practice together now.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: If you're driving, I'm going to once again caution you about this.
- 4:48Maybe put this side of the podcast aside,
- 4:51this moment of the podcast aside.
- 4:55If you're doing something that requires your full attention in
- 4:57order to be safe,
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: please come back to this at a later time.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: It will be available to you.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: In fact, I figured out a way where I can just
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: plant it right in the middle of the sub stack.
- 5:08So you don't have to like fast forward to this moment in the
- 5:11podcast or in the YouTube video.
- 5:13You can just go to the Substack and find it and you'll just like
- 5:17scroll and you'll
- 5:18see a little audio embedded thing and you can just click on it
- 5:21and you can practice
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: at a time that works best for you.
- 5:25But if you're able to practice with us live now,
- 5:27let's go ahead and settle our bodies.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And just start to tune into your breath.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: You don't have to change your breath in any way.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Just notice the inhales and the exhales.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Find your friend the breath wherever they are today.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And allow your body to relax into whatever surface is supporting you.
- 6:18So if that's a chair or a couch,
- 6:24let that furniture support you and take your weight.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: If you're standing,
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Go ahead and really feel your feet planted firmly on the floor.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: And let yourself ground into your space even more.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And then as you continue,
- 7:07Having a conversation with your breath,
- 7:09noticing what it's doing today in this moment.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Just start to gently see what else you notice in your present moment.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Maybe there are thoughts dancing in your mind.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And you can just notice those,
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: accept them,
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: be a little curious about what they're doing in general.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: But just notice them without attaching to them.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Just notice them neutrally.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Ah, thinking.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And then gently return your focus to your breath.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Likewise,
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: maybe you notice a particular feeling,
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: emotion or mood is present within your body and mind.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: And maybe you can be curious about that for a moment.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: And again, just sort of notice it neutrally.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: What is this feeling inside me?
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Where do I feel it in my body?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: How is it impacting the thoughts in my mind?
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And again, just noticing with curiosity instead of judgment.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: There's really no such thing as good emotions, bad emotions.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Emotions are all neutral.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Some may feel more pleasant to experience in the body and the mind.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: But even that we can get curious about.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: And that can be really helpful to us as actors,
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: getting curious about our emotions and our emotional life.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Just noticing whatever we notice.
- 10:10But again,
- 10:11always staying mindfully aware that this is a part of our
- 10:17present moment.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: We're not going to attach to this emotion.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: We're not going to get carried away with it or get lost in it.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: We're just observing it.
- 10:37And then gently coming back to our breath if we notice that our
- 10:41mind completely
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: wanders away from the present moment.
- 10:57Staying with our breath and just noticing what we notice inside
- 11:03us and around us.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: I've been hearing some airplanes.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I've just been noticing them.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: They're a part of my present experience.
- 11:30So again,
- 11:30I'm just focusing on my breath and noticing what's present in
- 11:38this moment for me.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Now we're going to bring this mindful moment to a close.
- 12:05so just noticing what you notice maybe inviting some gentle
- 12:14movement into your body
- 12:15as you get ready to bring more of your senses back online
- 12:23especially if you had
- 12:24your eyes closed and then whenever you're ready if your eyes
- 12:31were closed you can go
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: ahead and open them
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Fun fact, my screensaver came on during that little session.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: And I noticed it while I was guiding because my computer screen,
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: I noticed a change in my computer screen.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh, something changed on my computer screen.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: I don't know what that was.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: And I kept going.
- 12:59And then I all of a sudden was greeted by beautiful trees on my
- 13:03Mac screen here.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: So that was fun.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: A little behind the scenes fun fact for you.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: So that was mindfulness and it was delightful and wonderful.
- 13:15And while we're all kind of basking in the afterglow of that
- 13:20little mindfulness
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: session,
- 13:21I always feel much sort of calmer and more centered and just
- 13:25sort of relaxed after
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: sessions like that.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: I wanna remind you of all the many, many, many benefits of mindfulness.
- 13:34I gave an example earlier about becoming more aware of our
- 13:37thoughts and emotions
- 13:38throughout the day and how that can give us more choice and
- 13:41more agency in our
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: lives,
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: which I think is really great.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: Heightening our awareness is always a really,
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: really good thing,
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: especially in any personal development or mindset work that we wanna do.
- 13:54But practicing mindfulness can also help us just relieve
- 13:57tension and stress from
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: our body and mind.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, I know I feel infinitely more relaxed.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: I've released a lot of tension from my body through that session.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: It can help you calm your nerves before doing that big scene,
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: whether it's on set or it's for an audition.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: I always feel like in mindfulness,
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: I've come to a place of neutrality in my body where there isn't a lot of
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: I don't know, there's not a lot of Amy emotional life going on.
- 14:25Like I come to a neutral place so that then I could maybe put
- 14:28my character and
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: their emotional life,
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: their circumstances,
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: their imagined circumstances onto me,
- 14:35but from a place of neutrality because I've brought myself to a
- 14:38place of neutrality
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: through practicing mindfulness.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: So there's another benefit for you.
- 14:43It helps you stay present in your craft,
- 14:46really listening and reacting moment to moment.
- 14:49It can help you get out of your head in auditions and get
- 14:53present in the moment and
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: stay focused on whatever it is that your character wants.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: You're not thinking about, oh, what does casting want?
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: How can I book this job?
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: You're instead focused on, no, no, no.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: The work here is, what does my character want?
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: My character doesn't care about booking a job.
- 15:09My character cares about whatever's happening in this scene and
- 15:12getting what they
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: want in this scene.
- 15:15Mindfulness can also help you notice when your inner critic is
- 15:18being really mean to
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: you so that then you can decide,
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: ah,
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: do I want to keep listening to this little MF-er?
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Or do I want to maybe activate some self-kindness?
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Do I want to do something to nurture myself right now?
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And start taking that guy down, letting that voice go.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Mindfulness can also help you become less judgmental
- 15:42both yourself with that little inner critic and maybe less just
- 15:45judgmental of other
- 15:46people and it can also help you start to gently question if
- 15:52some of your dominant
- 15:53thoughts the thoughts that you think a lot kind of your general
- 15:57mindset might
- 15:59actually be holding you back in your career maybe it's just a
- 16:03bunch of limiting
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: beliefs and things that are holding you back in life in general
- 16:09You can just start to gently question those things because it's
- 16:12not so helpful when
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: we kind of aggressively attack our mindset and our thoughts.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: That can get a little tricky there.
- 16:21But if we gently start questioning,
- 16:23is that something that I want to keep believing?
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Is that really true?
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Whatever the thought is that is in there.
- 16:33And we can just gently start to question these things because
- 16:36mindfulness helps us
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: approach all of our thoughts,
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: all of our emotions,
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: everything that's going on within us from this place of neutrality and of
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: curiosity.
- 16:47Hmm.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: I wonder.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: I wonder about that.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: So these are all really great benefits of mindfulness.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: These are things that I love about mindfulness.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: And these benefits are immediate,
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: like you'll start to notice them immediately practicing in a session.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: And then they're cumulative,
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: meaning that regular practice,
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: even just 10 minutes a day,
- 17:09makes all of these great benefits more and more and more and
- 17:13more accessible to you
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: over time.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: And that's why I want to get us all practicing as much as possible.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: because it just takes practice.
- 17:21It just takes sticking with this and continuing to come back
- 17:26and continuing to
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: bring yourself to a place of mindful presence in your life.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: And you'll continue to see these benefits more and more and more.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: So that's why I want us all practicing as much as possible.
- 17:38That's why I'm committed to bringing you these little
- 17:41mindfulness sessions
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: throughout your month,
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: basically.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: And then also speaking of mindfulness,
- 17:49I have a very specific mindfulness meditation that is meant for
- 17:54that moment before
- 17:55you're going to do a big scene or before you're going to do an
- 17:57audition where you
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: can,
- 18:00it's going to help you calm your nerves and let go of all those
- 18:03distracting
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: thoughts that I mentioned about like,
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: how can I book this?
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: What do they want?
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: What am I supposed to do with this scene?
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: You're going to let all that go.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: and you're going to focus in on what your character wants,
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: because that's really what's going on.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: What's going on for your character in the scene,
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: that's the work,
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: and that's where you want your focus.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: You don't want your focus on, I want to book this.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: How do I book this?
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Of course we want to book things.
- 18:28But in order to book things,
- 18:29we have to focus on the work and be present in the work.
- 18:32And so this free meditation is available to you and it will
- 18:36help you stay focused on the work.
- 18:39And of course there are links everywhere that you would expect
- 18:42to find links.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: The other thing that I have links for you everywhere throughout Substack,
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: the podcast notes,
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: the YouTube video is around
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: A free complimentary session.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Free complimentary?
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's a little bit redundant, but that's okay.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: If you're ready to transform your actor mindset in general,
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: you want to learn more about mindfulness,
- 19:04you want to transform your actor mindset using mindfulness and
- 19:09using a bunch of
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: other life coach tools and things like that,
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: I can definitely help you with that.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: And I offer a free session.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: And rest assured, it's not a sales call.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: It's literally just a time of connection.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: We connect for an hour.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: We talk about what's going on with you.
- 19:23And you leave with some specific actionable ideas that you can
- 19:27start applying right
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: away to start gently shifting your mindset,
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: taking better care of yourself,
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: maybe taking better care of your mind at least,
- 19:36and helping yourself out a little bit more as an actor and how
- 19:40you approach your
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: mindset overall.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: So that free session is available to you.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: And I encourage you to go and take advantage of that.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Again, links are everywhere.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: And if in the meantime,
- 19:51you want sort of just some specific tiny tools that would help
- 19:58you de-stress in
- 19:59general and help you calm down and release tension from your
- 20:04mind and body
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: throughout your day and sort of general stress that you might be feeling,
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: I have an ebook,
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: it's called Accessing Calm.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: And these are mindfulness tools that I use on the go all the time to
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: calm my body down,
- 20:18release tension and stress and stop my mind from spinning out
- 20:21of control with
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: frustration and worry.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: And they helped me get through everything in life.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: So the morning rush off to school and diving into work on my business.
- 20:33And then also they helped me calm down before I hit record on a
- 20:37self tape and they
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: help with the general stress of the world and all of that craziness.
- 20:45It's a really quick read and there are video demonstrations of
- 20:48all of the tools.
- 20:49So you get to watch me demonstrate the tool and you can do it
- 20:53with me and then you
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: take it and do it on your own.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: And it's a lot of fun, I think.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: And it's $7.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: So you can go pick that up for yourself.
- 21:02Again,
- 21:02there are links everywhere you'd expect to find links and I
- 21:04encourage you to do that.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: And then finally,
