- 0:00today I'm going to be talking about the
- 0:02question of what happens when you add an
- 0:05extra ad to a web
- 0:07page specifically I'm going to be
- 0:10talking about what happens when the ad
- 0:12is added onto a page where there is an
- 0:15already existing ad we'll focus on the
- 0:19desktop web experience although largely
- 0:22it's the same on a mobile experience but
- 0:25on a desktop experience is obviously
- 0:27more landscape to play with and this is
- 0:30is a more common practice I'm going to
- 0:32be examining it from the attention of
- 0:35three different groups the publisher The
- 0:39Advertiser and the user of the web
- 0:43page there are very similar Dynamics to
- 0:47those that I have already outlined in
- 0:50the video on ad rotation and so I'm
- 0:53going to link to that video here but in
- 0:56this particular case if we look at a web
- 0:59page you'll get a better sense for what
- 1:02I'm talking about this is an example
- 1:05where the publisher has two identical
- 1:08ads over the right hand side of the page
- 1:11let's assume that there was previously
- 1:14only one ad and what you see is that the
- 1:19second ad was added directly below the
- 1:21first and let's consider our three
- 1:26groups the user is pretty
- 1:28straightforward if you're a user who
- 1:30dislikes having ads on the page adding
- 1:33an extra ad is certainly not going to
- 1:35help you if you're one of those rare
- 1:37users that likes ads possibly you like
- 1:40having an extra ad added but now to The
- 1:44Advertiser if there's only one ad on the
- 1:47page then the advertiser doesn't have
- 1:50any
- 1:51competition however when the other AD is
- 1:53added to the page the potential
- 1:55clickthrough rate may drop significantly
- 1:59in fact it is not unreasonable to assume
- 2:01that it may drop by as much as
- 2:0450% similarly if it's a brand Advertiser
- 2:08they may see a drop off in the perceived
- 2:10impact of their ad now to the
- 2:15publisher let's think about the
- 2:16publisher perspective and what happens
- 2:19when they actually get into loading the
- 2:21ads on the page If This Were
- 2:252015 and the ads were being loaded onto
- 2:27the page then the sales team of that
- 2:30publisher would be out talking to
- 2:32advertisers and trying to sell the ad
- 2:34space they would be representing how
- 2:36many ads there were on the page and
- 2:38they'd have to have a conversation with
- 2:41the advertiser around how those ads were
- 2:44loading however it's not 2015 we're
- 2:48almost a decade further down the road
- 2:51and what we see is that everything has
- 2:53move programmatic there isn't usually
- 2:56going to be a sales team having the
- 2:58conversation with an Advertiser
- 3:00directly about the ads that are on a
- 3:03page or how they're each
- 3:05performing one of the key things is the
- 3:08information that is being passed through
- 3:11to the advertiser The Advertiser may or
- 3:15may not even be aware that an extra ad
- 3:18has been added to the page in fact they
- 3:20may not be aware that an extra ad has
- 3:22been loaded to the page until they start
- 3:24to see a deterioration in the
- 3:27performance and they may even think that
- 3:29there's something else that is driving
- 3:30that poor performance because adding ads
- 3:34to a page is relatively a rare
- 3:37occurrence by a publisher The Advertiser
- 3:40may not be aware that this has happened
- 3:42on the publisher side and they may
- 3:44attribute it to something
- 3:47else now another major problem that can
- 3:50occur is the interaction between the ads
- 3:53on the page and these take a few
- 3:55different flavors one is an example
- 3:58where the advertis ER gets two of their
- 4:01own ads loading on the page maybe the
- 4:04ads are exactly the same maybe they are
- 4:07different but at the least the
- 4:09advertiser would look at that and say
- 4:12that's probably a waste of money why am
- 4:13I buying two ad slots exactly beside
- 4:16each other a second use case that can
- 4:19occur is in the case where an
- 4:22advertiser's ad May load and we may have
- 4:25a different situation where a ad that's
- 4:29distracting May load beside it in an
- 4:31example we'll see that Safeway ad loads
- 4:34and an ad beside it loads where there is
- 4:37a medical condition if I'm Safeway I
- 4:41probably don't love this ad experience
- 4:44and the third use case and possibly the
- 4:47most Pro problematic is if a competitor
- 4:50ads loads directly beside one of their
- 4:53direct competitors think Coke and Pepsi
- 4:56that would be an example where both
- 4:58advertisers going to be unhappy so what
- 5:01could happen in an extreme case The
- 5:04Advertiser may turn to the publisher and
- 5:07say we are deeply unhappy with this
- 5:10experience we are going to remove all of
- 5:13the advertising from that web page or po
- 5:16potentially from the site in
- 5:18general so problems from The Advertiser
- 5:22perspective generally fall into the two
- 5:25categories of a decline in the
- 5:27performance of the ads or s with the
- 5:30content surrounding the ad in this case
- 5:34specifically the other AD that's sitting
- 5:36beside the
- 5:37advertiser so if advertisers dislike it
- 5:40and users dislike it why do Publishers
- 5:44in insist on doing this and again I've
- 5:46done it so I'm guilty the reason is
- 5:49obviously more money and so the question
- 5:51is how much more money is a publisher
- 5:53going to make from doing this ideally
- 5:56one would be hoping that the new ad is
- 5:58going to load and get the same type of
- 6:00pricing or yield is the ad that's
- 6:03already on the page unfortunately that's
- 6:05not usually the case it's not usually
- 6:08the case because the two ads together
- 6:09are obviously inferior to the previous
- 6:12ad so the publisher while they're
- 6:15essentially doubling their ad
- 6:17Impressions is likely to only see a
- 6:19revenue uptick of somewhere between say
- 6:2210 and 40% now I appreciate that that's
- 6:26a large window but it gets to the fact
- 6:28that a lot of comes down to the desires
- 6:32of The
- 6:33Advertiser the um understanding of the
- 6:36performance of the different ads and
- 6:38frankly the communication around the
- 6:40launch so one could safely say that yes
- 6:43adding that additional ad to the page is
- 6:46going to help Revenue but it's not going
- 6:48to help it enough to be able to offset
- 6:51the fact that you're seeing significant
- 6:53price declines and so another word of
- 6:56caution to Publishers looking at
- 6:58embarking down on this path is that you
- 7:01need to be able to explain it both
- 7:04internally and potentially to the
- 7:05investor Community if you're a public
- 7:07company if you're a public company and
- 7:10you add a new ad to the page what you're
- 7:14going to see is a significant decline in
- 7:18the ad pricing this may be information
- 7:21that you already have to either disclose
- 7:23to your investors or they are able to
- 7:25back into from looking at some of your
- 7:27site metrics and so be ready with an
- 7:30answer as to why you're seeing the
- 7:33decline in the yield and the pricing on
- 7:35your
- 7:36sites so in summary a publisher is going
- 7:39to add an extra ad to a page because
- 7:42they believe that it's going to lead to
- 7:44more Revenue however in practice it's
- 7:47not going to lead to anything like the
- 7:49doubling of Revenue on that web page
- 7:51that a publisher might hope and may lead
- 7:54to significant issues with advertisers
- 7:57in terms of their desires to work with
- 7:59that publisher going forward I hope you
- 8:02enjoyed this content thanks
