Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, Hello Emily here, welcome back to another episode of
- 0:20Speaker 1: Five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I am coming to you
- 0:23Speaker 1: with some serious post Boston energy and a lot of
- 0:28Speaker 1: thoughts on what it actually means to be in tune
- 0:31Speaker 1: with yourself. I'm feeling so inspired and motivated after seeing
- 0:36Speaker 1: so many outstanding humans chase their own potential on Monday's
- 0:43Speaker 1: marathon day. And there's one story in particular that I
- 0:47Speaker 1: want to talk about in this episode of five Minute Friday,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and that has to do with Sharon Loketti. So Sharon
- 0:55Speaker 1: is on the bus to Hoppington, she is headed to
- 0:58Speaker 1: the start of the marathon, and she's a twenty twenty
- 1:01Speaker 1: five reigning champion of this marathon, and she realizes this
- 1:06Speaker 1: is true, that she doesn't have her watch. I do
- 1:09Speaker 1: not even the amount of pros I talked to in
- 1:12Speaker 1: the days leading up to the marathon that told me
- 1:14Speaker 1: about their checklists and their to do lists. The panic
- 1:18Speaker 1: that must have ensued for Sharon during.
- 1:21Speaker 2: This moment I cannot even fathom.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I mean, she's a favorite, the states are high, she's
- 1:27Speaker 1: hunting a back to back when she's missing something that's
- 1:31Speaker 1: like a major tool to come up on top of
- 1:36Speaker 1: the podium. Anyway, Sharon borrows a watch from someone she
- 1:41Speaker 1: finds at the start, and that is that is so
- 1:48Speaker 1: insane to me, especially because what actually happened here is
- 1:52Speaker 1: that she made a decision before she even got this
- 1:56Speaker 1: substitute watch. She made the decision that she wasn't going
- 2:01Speaker 1: to let the things that she could no longer control
- 2:03Speaker 1: break her.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And that is such a lesson.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Sharon had no other option except to trust her training,
- 2:11Speaker 1: trust her internal dashboard, and she told reporters that she
- 2:15Speaker 1: was fully prepared to just go into this race based
- 2:21Speaker 1: on feel. We even heard that the data that was
- 2:25Speaker 1: on the watch that she ended up borrowing was like
- 2:27Speaker 1: very different than what she typically looks down and sees
- 2:30Speaker 1: on hers So she was essentially, as we often call it,
- 2:33Speaker 1: running naked. So I'm telling you the story because it
- 2:36Speaker 1: brings me to the concept of internal versus external, and
- 2:41Speaker 1: we live in an era where all of us, myself
- 2:45Speaker 1: for sure, we are often obsessed with the external. I
- 2:50Speaker 1: want the GPS on my watch to tell me that
- 2:52Speaker 1: I am moving fast. I want my bank account to
- 2:55Speaker 1: tell me that I am air quotes successful.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I want likes on Instagram. You get the point.
- 3:02Speaker 1: But spoiler alert, Sharon won the Boston Marathon, and that's
- 3:07Speaker 1: because she let go of worrying about the external. She
- 3:13Speaker 1: was willing to go within and ask herself, how does
- 3:18Speaker 1: this feel now? What do I need? And how can
- 3:20Speaker 1: I do the best I can with what I have?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Period?
- 3:25Speaker 1: So that brings me to this week's listener encouragement. I'm
- 3:29Speaker 1: not even going to call it a prompt. My encouragement
- 3:32Speaker 1: for you is ask yourself, are you seeking external validation
- 3:36Speaker 1: way too much? Is there more that you can base
- 3:40Speaker 1: your happiness, your benchmarks of success on That has nothing
- 3:44Speaker 1: to do with specific numbers or metrics. Where are you
- 3:49Speaker 1: being rigid within your day? And I'm not just talking
- 3:52Speaker 1: about running or working out right. If you're sitting at
- 3:57Speaker 1: your desk and you're asking yourself, am I being productive
- 4:00Speaker 1: enough within this period of time? Well? How are you
- 4:03Speaker 1: defying that? And is that by your standards? Are someone else's?
- 4:08Speaker 1: It's worth neddling over. And I do think that there
- 4:11Speaker 1: is a little bit of comfort that we can all
- 4:13Speaker 1: find that the best to do it. And in this case,
- 4:16Speaker 1: I'm talking about Sharon, she too makes mistakes from time
- 4:21Speaker 1: to time, So have a little grace with yourself and
- 4:24Speaker 1: know that a small mistake doesn't mean that you need
- 4:29Speaker 1: to throw out all of your hard work. And now
- 4:34Speaker 1: a listener question, Hi Emily, as a runner about ready
- 4:38Speaker 1: to embark upon my first High Rocks, a post epic
- 4:41Speaker 1: breakup inspired adventure.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I'm struggling with a shoe.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I love my ACEIX, have used ultras for my lifting shoes,
- 4:49Speaker 1: use met cons for boot camps, and have been warned
- 4:53Speaker 1: enough that they are not grippy.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I'm open to anything.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I know High Rocks themselves have a shoe, but hoping
- 5:00Speaker 1: to not spend over two hundred dollars on this.
- 5:03Speaker 2: What are your thoughts?
- 5:05Speaker 1: Okay, this is a good question, and I want to
- 5:08Speaker 1: say that it's so important that you are cognizant that
- 5:11Speaker 1: different sneakers are meant for different things, which means, as
- 5:15Speaker 1: this listener pointed out, there are going to be shoes
- 5:18Speaker 1: that are really great for boot camps, They're going to
- 5:20Speaker 1: be shoes that are really great for strength training, they
- 5:22Speaker 1: are going to be shoes that are great for running
- 5:23Speaker 1: a five k, and also shoes that are going to
- 5:26Speaker 1: be great for running a marathon. So how do you
- 5:29Speaker 1: know what shoe to pick for what?
- 5:31Speaker 2: Well?
- 5:32Speaker 1: You want to make sure that you're giving your foot
- 5:35Speaker 1: what it needs in the circumstance that you are in. So,
- 5:39Speaker 1: where as something like string training requires a flat base
- 5:44Speaker 1: and a shoe that can support a lateral movement like
- 5:47Speaker 1: a lunge, when you're running and have a lot more
- 5:50Speaker 1: time on feet, you want to make sure that your
- 5:53Speaker 1: foot has cushion underneath that can support the continuous pounding
- 5:58Speaker 1: of the pavement or the trails or the train.
- 6:00Speaker 2: You get what I'm saying.
- 6:01Speaker 1: High rocks is an interesting thing because it involves a
- 6:05Speaker 1: lot of different components the global indoor fitness racing competition,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and it combines running with functional workout stations like wallballs,
- 6:14Speaker 1: ski erg sled, push sled, pole murpy, broad jumps. What
- 6:19Speaker 1: else am I forgetting sandbag lunges, farmers carries wall balls?
- 6:24Speaker 1: I think I might have said that already there's rowing. Yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 1: there's a lot of different aspects to a high rocks
- 6:31Speaker 1: and also, as I said, running, so you want to
- 6:34Speaker 1: show that's multi purpose and.
- 6:37Speaker 2: More and more.
- 6:38Speaker 1: There are brands that are getting specifically into this game.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I know that Adidas recently released their Audi zero Drop
- 6:45Speaker 1: set Elite.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I have it sitting in my living room. I have
- 6:47Speaker 2: yet to try it.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Puma also has put a lot of marketing dollars behind
- 6:52Speaker 1: their high Rocks options, including the High Rocks Deviate and
- 6:55Speaker 1: the High Rocks Velocity. But the most important thing is
- 6:59Speaker 1: that you're wearing a sneaker that does have some cushion underfoot,
- 7:03Speaker 1: but not something that has so much cushion that you're
- 7:07Speaker 1: feeling super wobbly, because you're going to need a firm
- 7:10Speaker 1: base to do a lot of these targeted strength movements. Personally,
- 7:15Speaker 1: for something like this, I'd probably lean into a Nike
- 7:18Speaker 1: Pegasus or the Puma Devi eight. I've run in both
- 7:22Speaker 1: and really enjoy them and feel like they are sturdy
- 7:24Speaker 1: enough for the other demands of a high rocks event,
- 7:27Speaker 1: but I will caveat that I've never participated in one myself.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I'm only thinking of this as if I was going
- 7:34Speaker 1: to go do a workout with all the things I
- 7:36Speaker 1: just listed what I'd be looking for from an underfoot
- 7:39Speaker 1: feel now. Of note, there is a considerable amount of
- 7:44Speaker 1: running in a high rock, so again, while you do
- 7:47Speaker 1: want to feel secure and sturdy doing those alternative movements,
- 7:51Speaker 1: when you're logging a total of eight kilometers of movement,
- 7:55Speaker 1: that is a lot of running, so just.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Keep it in mind.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Make sure you're giving your foot the support that it needs,
- 8:02Speaker 1: the cushion that it needs, and most of all, have fun.
- 8:06Speaker 2: What a fun adventure to be going on.
