- 0:00Yeah, but I was kind of hoping for death by fingering.
- 0:03Get away from her you bitch blasting.
- 0:08He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders
- 0:12right before she died. No, I thought you can't
- 0:20prostitute your dog at it. I used to love doggy chow.
- 0:24I used to love doggy chow too. Hold on to your vaginas.
- 0:29I'm Crystal. Well, you wouldn't give your
- 0:31child cocaine, would you? I'm baby lame.
- 0:36I forgot about that line. That one's good.
- 0:38It's a good one, isn't it? Yeah.
- 0:40And welcome to Camp Classics. A thoughtful podcast about
- 0:47stupid movies. Hi, hi, Can.
- 0:51I just say before we get into this, if I just dissolve into a
- 0:55pile of slop all over the recording equipment and die and
- 1:00just kind of maybe regenerate as an AI thing in your other
- 1:04devices, that might be what we're dealing with today.
- 1:08Pride month is over and we're into Wrath month, which is just
- 1:1332°. There's sweat dripping between
- 1:18my breasts. Big boobs what?
- 1:22Out of all of your body parts, what's the least favorite part
- 1:25of your body part that gets sweaty, if that even makes
- 1:28sense, is the. Question.
- 1:29No, it does. It does.
- 1:30I think it might be like the backs of my knees.
- 1:33You know what? Like you're not wearing like
- 1:35when you're wearing shorts and you cross your legs and you get
- 1:37like sweat on your thigh and the back of your knee from your legs
- 1:41touching well. That's interesting.
- 1:44I think that's the grossest. I don't think I really get that
- 1:47sweaty there. I think mine's my ass.
- 1:51Oh, Jesus. Gross.
- 1:53Yeah, that's a. Bit sweaty saggy ass.
- 2:01What are we doing here today? Well, we're covering Megan 2
- 2:05point O. That's right.
- 2:07That's right, listeners. We're doing a new movie that is
- 2:09currently in the cinemas. We are breaking the boundaries
- 2:14with the films we're covering on this podcast.
- 2:16That's right. I will say upfront there will be
- 2:19light spoilers, but as always with this show there's also lots
- 2:23of context behind the scenes T and all of our gay chat so don't
- 2:31worry too. Much about that that's that's
- 2:33some good chat GTPT there that dude why did I not say chat P
- 2:38What is it chat I still don't know what it is chat.
- 2:41I'll, I'm just going to let you continue to try it.
- 2:44Is it ChatGPT? Did you have a brain tumor for
- 2:47breakfast, ChatGPT? Yeah, but what does it stand
- 2:51for? Generative predictive text?
- 2:56I don't know. That's a.
- 2:57That's a guess. OK, well I'm here with you
- 3:00because I in in research for this.
- 3:02This is I didn't really know what to do with other research.
- 3:05So I went on to it and I asked it if it was Megan and it
- 3:09wasn't. It said it wasn't.
- 3:10And then I went down there like a little wormhole of asking if
- 3:14it would fall in love with me and it said it couldn't.
- 3:16And then I was like, I'm destroying the universe.
- 3:19It's already hot. How many other things are
- 3:22burning because of this pointless conversation?
- 3:24So I'm sorry. That's so funny, it really says
- 3:31like how frazzled we all are in this heat that you're just like
- 3:35having a fight with an AI trying to get info about an AI movie.
- 3:41Send the asteroid. Death to all of them.
- 3:47Before we go any further though, we do have a Gay Trion where you
- 3:50can subscribe for £4 a month and get a bonus episode every month
- 3:55and access to our growing back catalog.
- 3:58Our last Patreon episode was on Masters of the Universe.
- 4:01You can listen to that now and we'll have another one out next
- 4:05week. Great.
- 4:06I don't know what we're covering that a hefty bat catalog of
- 4:09episodes now aren't we? A fat ass.
- 4:12And I will say I've started noticing more people tagging us
- 4:16on Instagram and other socials with how much they're enjoying
- 4:19the podcast. They're apparently the Batman
- 4:21and Robin one. Seems to be quite popular.
- 4:23It, it has been, it has been, yeah, we've the socials are
- 4:26building up. I will just say like, interact
- 4:28with us. Yeah, we've got nothing else to
- 4:32do. Send a pic if you want, don't
- 4:35send a pic if you don't want to. But you know, let's really build
- 4:38on this connection. Let's make this.
- 4:39I was about to say let's make this a family, but then that
- 4:42maybe might be. Well, we did have some comments
- 4:46and and feedback that I wanted to share so.
- 4:48Oh. Great.
- 4:49Off the back of Batman and Robin, I don't know if you
- 4:51remember, but you asked if we had any straight listeners and
- 4:55if they want Batman to win. Oh yes, I did.
- 4:58Yeah. What was the answer?
- 4:59So Kate says right, I'm not quite straight, and maybe
- 5:04someone proper straight might have a different answer, but I
- 5:06always want the baddies to win, especially if they're fabulous.
- 5:10But yeah, but the, the the the clue there is though not proper
- 5:13straight and I think, I don't think you're straight.
- 5:16At all, darling. Exactly.
- 5:17Exactly. But not if you want Poison Ivy
- 5:20to win. And then Neve messaged and said
- 5:23as Neve. Of Neve Campbell fame.
- 5:25Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Is that actually?
- 5:27I mean, is that how you pronounce that NI AM H?
- 5:29Oh, I don't know, Nema. No, no, it's, I don't know.
- 5:33I think it's Neve. I think it's Neve, anyway.
- 5:35Neve, not Campbell. Yeah, Which is another strike
- 5:37against her because she says as a straight girl, sorry, no, it's
- 5:41OK, we don't shame here. Pride runs is over.
- 5:44She says yes. I've always wanted Batman to
- 5:45win. Oh.
- 5:48So. Oh, so I was on to something.
- 5:51Yeah, our sample size of two confirms you.
- 5:53Were right. Well, thank you for that Nieve.
- 5:56I think that you know that it's really good and we appreciate
- 5:59having our straight allies listening to the podcast.
- 6:02Thank you so much. And I've we've also had a
- 6:04comment on Apple podcast, which I'll read.
- 6:07And this is from Ruri. Crystal and Baby Watch iconic
- 6:10movies from queer and often accidentally queer cinema
- 6:13history. And yes, they read them for
- 6:15filth. It takes a deep understanding of
- 6:17our culture to be this good at eviscerating and celebrating
- 6:19these films. Besides the details, fascinating
- 6:21trivia, and the hilarious observations along the way,
- 6:24watch out for episodes featuring the I Never Know How to Say This
- 6:27Word inimitable Peaches Grace, whose knowledge of camp cinema
- 6:34and exploration of queer culture together are both insightful and
- 6:37joyous. No wire hangers to be seen and
- 6:39nothing flaccid about it. Oh, well, that was wonderful.
- 6:43Thank you, Rory. Yeah.
- 6:45Stunning. Good.
- 6:46It makes it sound really good, doesn't it?
- 6:47And then especially when you can't even read it, that really
- 6:49helps. Doesn't.
- 6:53It the other bit of business I wanted to share with you
- 6:55because. She's all about the Business
- 6:56Today. Is that she?
- 6:57I know she's got her folder, she's come into the meeting,
- 7:01she's tapping things down. She's like, listen guys, I know.
- 7:05Got minutes? I know that we are going to have
- 7:08the work drinks afterwards, but before we let our hairs down,
- 7:11please can we just make sure that we're covering these
- 7:13meeting memo point please? Well this memo point is cause
- 7:17for some office celebration and I actually brought in a Tesco
- 7:20slab cake for the occasion because this is our 25th episode
- 7:25baby. Lame.
- 7:25Wagon Wheel Watusi. Oh, isn't that?
- 7:29Oh, that's. Great.
- 7:30Yeah, feels a lot, lot more, doesn't it, than 2525.
- 7:35Well, it's hard to count, but I think this is the 25th movie
- 7:37we've covered. Well done.
- 7:39Yeah. Well done you.
- 7:40Yeah, who? Who would have ever thought we'd
- 7:42get this far? No, exactly.
- 7:45Behind the scenes it's been a bit rocky at times, but we found
- 7:48our flow now, haven't we? The.
- 7:50Girls are fighting. We've also, I don't know if this
- 7:54means anything, but we've got over 10,000 plays on Apple
- 7:58Podcasts. Let's say it does.
- 8:00It sounds good. It sounds really good. 10,000.
- 8:04And is that you just checking the audio edits work?
- 8:10What I would say is that we've had 10,000 plays.
- 8:12And how many reviews have we had?
- 8:14Yeah, exactly. Not many.
- 8:16So, you know, sorted out listeners.
- 8:18I've said it, but I'm not allowed to say it.
- 8:20Even if you don't like it, at least give us some real
- 8:22feedback. Come on, do something.
- 8:25You want real feedback? I only want five stars.
- 8:29Why can't you give me the respect that I'm entitled to?
- 8:36Baby, before we go any further, what makes a camp classic?
- 8:40Well, thank you for asking. And I thought in this week's
- 8:43Camp Classic roundup, I would maybe channel the spirit of a
- 8:48camp goddess that we crowned in our last episode.
- 8:51I'm talking about Poison Ivy. Oh, let's see how this goes.
- 8:59So if you want a camp classic, it needs to unlock queer joy.
- 9:04In the words of my good sis Megan Fox, it needs to give us
- 9:08such a wedding. You.
- 9:10Give me such a wedding. A camp classic needs to have an
- 9:14ongoing legacy. That's right.
- 9:16Something that will make you come back for more.
- 9:22It felt like a good idea. I'm just going to have to carry
- 9:24on right here. OK.
- 9:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:26There's no escape now. It should be so stupid.
- 9:29It's genius. It needs to feed into queer pop
- 9:33culture. That's right.
- 9:34I want something that's got roots I like a good root and
- 9:37deep down and something that's never a problem with me.
- 9:43Flaccid energy. This film needs to be rejected
- 9:47by the mainstream and resurrected by the gays.
- 9:50A resurrection, if you will. And that is what a camp classic
- 9:55should be. I don't know, I turned into some
- 9:58sort of Private Eye. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:01It suddenly was like, listen here, kid.
- 10:05Yeah, she. Yeah, she.
- 10:08She Yeah, Don't touch me here. I'm I miss her.
- 10:11I miss Poison Ivy. But she Why?
- 10:13Can't every. Why can't every movie feature
- 10:16her? Totally.
- 10:18They were. I feel like they were trying to
- 10:19give Megan a bit of Poison Ivy. And every other female
- 10:23character. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:25Well so before we get into Megan 2.0, what were your thoughts on
- 10:30Megan One? Couldn't really remember it and
- 10:33we went to the cinema because we went to the cinema to see this
- 10:35the other day and I didn't really watch it.
- 10:40I remembered it being sort of like a modern day version of the
- 10:44sort of Charles Play Chucky films.
- 10:46I quite liked it. I quite liked how violent it was
- 10:50and I thought it was quite fun. It was.
- 10:52It felt like a sort of an accidental camp moment had
- 10:56happened. Yeah.
- 10:57What about you? Cuz you did rewatch it, didn't
- 11:00you? Yeah, I think the same.
- 11:01I think before rewatching, I was like, this was a fun movie that
- 11:05delighted me in ways I hadn't expected.
- 11:07And I think by the time we went to see Megan one, it had already
- 11:10been like a viral Internet sensation.
- 11:14And I was I think I went into Megan one being like already
- 11:16kind of I rolly that it, you know, when just a thing becomes
- 11:19so big on the Internet, you're like, you're fed up with it.
- 11:22So. Far.
- 11:22That's the thing, isn't it, when you've got Drew Barrymore
- 11:25dressing up as her and doing the dance on her.
- 11:27Talk show it's. Just I forgot.
- 11:28About that and. It's like, you know, you know
- 11:31this about me, but this is such like a big problem with me.
- 11:35As soon as anyone likes anything and people are like, this is
- 11:38funny, it automatically makes me hate it.
- 11:42And it does. It could be really great.
- 11:44It could be like, I feel like it can be any kind of subjects like
- 11:48this great food, this great restaurant, this really nice
- 11:50person. It's like if too many people
- 11:52have too nice about it, I automatically will hate it.
- 11:55So it's hard, isn't it? Because then you've got to kind
- 11:58of really, you know, for something like this podcast, we
- 12:01can't, we've got to push those things to the side and really
- 12:05the source material, seriously. I love limes.
- 12:08I love them. Well, I feel like we did do that
- 12:11because I went into Megan one. I remember being already quite
- 12:14eye rolly. I'm like, this is going to just
- 12:16be quite annoying. And actually I remember being
- 12:18like, no, no, I've had a really fun time.
- 12:20It surprised me. It was genuinely funny.
- 12:23Rewatched it, yeah, last week before going to Megan 2.
- 12:26I gotta say, it didn't hold up that well to a rewatch.
- 12:29The jokes, it already feels a bit stale.
- 12:32It's actually not as violent as I remember.
- 12:34Like, it kind of cuts away from any gore.
- 12:36And, you know, it's kind of a thin movie.
- 12:39Yeah. Just as a recap, though, it was
- 12:41a huge hit. It had a production budget of
- 12:44around 12 million, and it grossed over 181,000,000
- 12:48worldwide. So it was a massive, massive
- 12:51success. And it's also got 93% on Rotten
- 12:53Tomatoes. 93%. Yeah, crazy.
- 12:57That is crazy. Yeah.
- 13:00So I guess everyone watching it was just kind of like, surprised
- 13:03by it in a fun way. Yeah.
- 13:05I was also reading an interview with the the writer Akayla
- 13:08Cooper. She was also kind of like, oh,
- 13:10yeah. I think we were.
- 13:11We didn't really know we were making a queer movie.
- 13:14And I think the virality of it all, I think it took everyone by
- 13:17surprise. It was quite a lot of straight
- 13:21people, it looks like, who accidentally made something that
- 13:24the gays really enjoyed. I was about to say because I
- 13:26don't think it was a queer movie.
- 13:29No, sorry, I don't mean queer. Well, you said queer.
- 13:32Yeah, you're right, I actually meant gay.
- 13:36Yeah, and there's a really big difference.
- 13:38Isn't there? Yeah, there really is.
- 13:41Yeah. Megan is gay.
- 13:42Megan is We Hope Ride. I mean, I saw the Megan's at We
- 13:46Hope Ride this year. Period.
- 13:49Yeah, I mean, that's the problem, isn't it?
- 13:51I think setting up a movie like this, because obviously they
- 13:53have leaned into that sort of connection and the kind of the
- 13:57fierce dragginess of Megan. But it's.
- 14:01You've got to be careful with the queers.
- 14:03Because if we accidentally discover something like this and
- 14:07queer it and make it feel like it's part of us, great.
- 14:10But as soon as you're there with your fans clacking away sort of
- 14:14saying slay to us, I don't know many people that are going to
- 14:18kind of accept it in the same sort of way, period.
- 14:23Totally and so it's almost like Megan won, like the viral stuff
- 14:27took everyone by surprise. It felt like a groundswell of
- 14:30the public kind of went and made it gay.
- 14:33And now obviously for Megan 2, they've been like, let's double
- 14:36down. That worked.
- 14:37Let's like lean into that so much harder and.
- 14:41It's just giving a bit of Katy Perry covering album campaign.
- 14:44Isn't it sexy? Confident.
- 14:48Because I saw Megan was the cover star of Attitude magazine
- 14:54and they did an interview with her.
- 14:56Now I've got some quotes from the interview and obviously I
- 14:59was just like, this is exactly why I hate the way that they're
- 15:02promo in this film. So Megan, what is in your onset
- 15:07rider? As a start, I was able to
- 15:09negotiate a few key perks like a motorized makeup machine that I
- 15:14call the Glam tunnel. Kind of like a mix between a car
- 15:17wash and an Mir that applies primary and finishing mist in 30
- 15:20seconds to the LAT. I have a temperature controlled
- 15:23wig wall, a charging shades, and an AI powered valency mirror
- 15:27that runs while delivering positive affirmations.
- 15:31OK. Wow.
- 15:35Someone thought. They were, really.
- 15:37Cunty with that, didn't they? And that's what I'm saying.
- 15:39There's nothing that's just not like.
- 15:43It also doesn't make any sense because Megan doesn't wear
- 15:45makeup. No, she's a.
- 15:48Robot, the the interview continues.
- 15:51And she did turn it around for me.
- 15:54OK, OK. So the question was.
- 15:56Which songs are on your killer summer playlist brackets?
- 16:00Should that be slay list? Which, And then Megan replies.
- 16:07That's cute, but the record. I never actually use the word
- 16:11slay in conversation or in the movie, but I'm obligated to say
- 16:15it so that market marketing can reach their core demo, whatever
- 16:18that means. Likewise, my musical tastes skew
- 16:21a lot darker than Taylor Swift and Chapel Roan.
- 16:23My favorite band is probably and somewhat ironically, Slayer, and
- 16:27I was kind of like, oh, OK, actually I'm like the AI is AI
- 16:31ING and yeah, I'm kind of sold again from that.
- 16:34So on this already roller coaster ride I'm having with the
- 16:36marketing wave and Megan 2 point O, I'm kind of being lured back
- 16:41in and that's showing where we're getting with AII think.
- 16:44That's really funny and also ironic because I will watch like
- 16:48the final trailer for Megan 2 Point O today and instead of
- 16:51Britney in that trailer they use feminine nomenon by Chapel run.
- 16:55So I like, I like a kind of meta reference, but it is the way the
- 17:00way Megan 2 point O has been marketed has been incredibly
- 17:04tedious. Yeah.
- 17:06And it just makes me not want to give it a high score from the
- 17:08get go. Yeah.
- 17:10It's like that level of gay bait is just deplorable.
- 17:14It's it's giving like, I mean, we don't even have these prides
- 17:18anymore where like the pink pound is being spent.
- 17:20They've kind of ditched us, haven't they?
- 17:21But it's it is giving like Tesco's have made a rainbow
- 17:26sandwich and you know what I mean?
- 17:28It's like. Oh, who had the pride sandwich?
- 17:32Was it M&S? Yeah, it was M&S.
- 17:34What was it the? Guacamole, bacon, lettuce and
- 17:39tomato. Yeah, so was it the LGBTS?
- 17:41Yeah, I think so. That's really good, actually.
- 17:47Yeah, right. Well, let's get into Megan too.
- 17:51Yeah. So Megan 2 Point O directed by
- 17:55Gerard Johnston, written by Akayla Cooper.
- 17:59It had a production budget of something like 15 to 25,000,000.
- 18:03Unfortunately, we've had a flop on our hands.
- 18:06It's as of recording on Tuesday, its opening weekend was only $10
- 18:12million, which is 1/3 of Megan one.
- 18:22Yeah, it's also got a much lower Rotten Tomatoes score of 57%, so
- 18:28the critics aren't loving it as much either.
- 18:30In terms of plot, I've got like a short synopsis here.
- 18:35Yeah. The other thing with this film
- 18:36is they, like, clearly have decided to give like, a
- 18:40different genre a film ago, haven't they?
- 18:43Yeah. So there's a lot of plot to get
- 18:45through. Yeah.
- 18:46I mean, I'm not saying it's very notable plot, but there's a lot
- 18:49of plot. Yeah, it's one of my notes.
- 18:51There is so much plot in this. Movie in the spirit of Batman
- 18:56and Robin, I think the only way to get through this plot is the
- 18:59yada. Yada yada yada.
- 19:01Yada technique. OK, perfect.
- 19:04So this is where we'll start to come in with some spoilers I
- 19:07guess, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.
- 19:10Deal with it, yeah. Just listen anyway.
- 19:13I mean, it's literally gonna be fine.
- 19:14It's not that fucking difficult people.
- 19:16Like if you don't want spoilers, you can go and watch the film
- 19:201st and then maybe listen to this podcast if you don't care.
- 19:24Here we are. You know what I mean?
- 19:26I mean, it's really not the biggest decision in the world.
- 19:28There's not going to be. I would say, I would say there's
- 19:31even a the third thing is also this movie doesn't matter very
- 19:35much. And therefore you could just you
- 19:37could hear the spoilers. It won't be that anything that's
- 19:40surprising, and you could still probably enjoy the movie.
- 19:43I one of my favorite things is people that react to spoilers
- 19:46because it can be like such like a huge problem to them, but
- 19:50it's. Like such a troll though.
- 19:53Sorry, I'm just uncrossing my legs and peeling them apart.
- 19:57Oh, I just tucked behind my knee and got a bigger wet bit as
- 20:00well. Bit of wet, bit of crack.
- 20:03I'm sorry. You've got to smell it though,
- 20:05haven't you? Every single time.
- 20:07What? Disgusting.
- 20:10You don't smell. I've got my sweat, I've got a
- 20:13really bad sense of smell, and I sometimes think that my sweaty
- 20:19T-shirt right now smells like cookies, and it obviously
- 20:21doesn't. Wow.
- 20:24By my oh, I smell like baked goods, but no, it's like dried
- 20:28up sweat. We've been friends for a long
- 20:31time and I have never once thought oh baby smells like
- 20:35cookies. But it explains because if
- 20:39that's what I smell, maybe there's a gene, you know, the
- 20:42gene would like cilantro. Yeah.
- 20:44Maybe there's a gene with people smelling them in sweat and it
- 20:47smells like delicious cookies. So there we go.
- 20:50OK, well it explains a lot frankly.
- 20:54OK, so here is the plot of Megan 2 Point O.
- 20:59Let's start by saying the genre is very different, so forget
- 21:03about horror. It's got some horror elements I
- 21:05suppose. Not much though.
- 21:07It's more, I'd say, if you took like Terminator 2 and Mission
- 21:13Impossible and Austin Powers. It's so Austin Powers with maybe
- 21:20like a little scattering of Clueless or Mean Girl just for
- 21:23like, you know, the characters. But it's like a sci-fi farce
- 21:28essentially, with the plot of Terminator 2, essentially.
- 21:33So two years after Megan, a marvel of artificial
- 21:38intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous rampage,
- 21:41its creator, Gemma, has become an advocate for government
- 21:45oversight of AI. Unbeknownst to her, a defence
- 21:49contractor has created a military grade weapon known as
- 21:53Amelia. The ultimate infiltration spy
- 21:56didn't. They put a three in her name.
- 21:59Oh yeah, or like. You know, like an AT.
- 22:05Yeah, make it really Y2K. You're right, I does she not
- 22:12have, does she not have nothing in her in her name?
- 22:15This is just Amelia. She's just Amelia.
- 22:17I mean Amelia is a really shit name for like this ultimate
- 22:22fighting machine. Yeah, Amelia is what you would
- 22:25call a home. Mesurge you that?
- 22:27I thought she was like a hoe. No, like an Alexa, it's like
- 22:33it's in the world of Alexa. It's like a nanny.
- 22:36Yeah, it is, isn't it? Yeah.
- 22:38It's not county murderous robot. What did you think of her when
- 22:41you first saw her though? Because she's quite county,
- 22:43isn't she? Yeah, yeah.
- 22:45Yeah, she looks good. I mean, she's giving Scarlett
- 22:47Johansson Black Widow vibes, right?
- 22:49I I wrote down Calista Flockhart, AKA Ali Macbill,
- 22:54mixed in with Rachel Adams. That's visually who I'm getting
- 22:59with a bad wig. She's got a really bad wig.
- 23:02Yeah, I like that her face kind of didn't emote throughout.
- 23:08Apparently she studied AI. The actress who played and what
- 23:13else are you going to fucking study?
- 23:15Yeah, Also, like, what else are you going to say in an interview
- 23:17she did like. Tai she did like Tai chi or
- 23:19something. Oh yeah, I saw that Krav Maga.
- 23:22Yeah, it must be really hard, though, when you've been signed
- 23:27up to do a movie like this, because obviously, like, you'd
- 23:29be like, sure, I want to be a Megan too.
- 23:30Especially after the first one was the biggest.
- 23:32Of course you're going to want to be in it, but then you're
- 23:35like signed up for all of this like extensive promo where
- 23:38you're asked the same bullshit questions, like what do you
- 23:42answer? Like it's not that deep, is it?
- 23:44Like. No, especially like when you get
- 23:47gays like asking you questions and we're like, what are your
- 23:50favorite killer robots of all time?
- 23:52And she's like, I don't know. Yeah.
- 23:54And then who's the main actress? The older one, What's her name?
- 23:59Allison Williams. Allison Williams.
- 24:00Yeah, well, she's been. I'm basically, you're trying
- 24:03really fucking hard, bitch. But no ones buying this talking
- 24:06about how there's a real emotional crux to this movie,
- 24:10which we'll talk about, but just sort of saying that that, you
- 24:12know, pulls from a really different part of the
- 24:14characterization. And it was really great to
- 24:16explore that. It's like you are doing some
- 24:20heavy lifting with your lives in this interview, honey.
- 24:23Liza Minelli. Yeah.
- 24:27OK, so we've got Amelia, the evil spy robot.
- 24:33Anyway, Amelia's self-awareness increases and she becomes less
- 24:36interested in taking orders. So hoping to stop Amelia, Gemma
- 24:41decides to resurrect Megan, making her faster, stronger, and
- 24:45more lethal. And then I'm going to just yadda
- 24:48yadda yadda. Because but then in that yadda
- 24:50yadda yadda, like Amelia is basically killing a lot of very
- 24:53important people right from the get go, isn't she?
- 24:55She sure is. She's murdering CEOs,
- 24:58billionaires, and she's hacking into the entire world.
- 25:02And then we've got multiple showdowns, montages, heist style
- 25:07infiltrations, betrayals, double crosses and near deaths and and
- 25:14the team destroy Amelia before she can destroy civilization and
- 25:19they learn to trust Megan along the way.
- 25:21Oh my God, that that I was. I was trying to catch that where
- 25:24you are with the synopsis. Oh my God, no.
- 25:25That was like the biggest yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda
- 25:27yadda ever. OK, Wow.
- 25:30Yeah, I'm sorry. It's either that or like 18
- 25:33paragraphs of plot. Yeah, let's not do the 18
- 25:36paragraphs of plot, but. But yeah, that's the that's the
- 25:39gist. The final message of the movie
- 25:41is not to fear AI or to try and control it, but to cooperate
- 25:46with it and find a balance, to live in harmony.
- 25:49Well, you had to become like parents, wasn't it?
- 25:51Was what? They yeah, become parents to AI.
- 25:54Because that's great. That's a great structure to base
- 25:56it on because we no one ever has any issues with their parents
- 26:00and parents never like take the piss and abuse their children,
- 26:03do they? So yeah, great.
- 26:05So we're, that's the way to solve AI.
- 26:07Wonderful. Yeah, OK, well, let's talk about
- 26:10the style, the style of this movie.
- 26:12What do we think about the changing of the style from
- 26:14horror to like, sci-fi? Well, I think it's I think it's
- 26:19like an interesting move because I think what from what I could
- 26:22tell with this movie is they're trying to build like a bigger
- 26:24franchise. Yeah.
- 26:25And I guess like going down more like a Marvel Universe, kind of
- 26:29like Megan is sort of like an anti superhero kind of thing.
- 26:34Kind of makes sense because I guess if she was just the
- 26:39psychotic doll that wants to kill everyone and and look after
- 26:43this girl, it's kind of there's not really that far you can go
- 26:47with it. Because I don't get me wrong, I
- 26:50don't think she's that into the girl anymore.
- 26:51In this this movie. She didn't really seem that
- 26:53bothered by her. Yeah, it was more about the
- 26:56Gemma character in Megan's relationship, wasn't it then?
- 26:59Yeah, than the child and Megan. But I think the problem is it's
- 27:02just, it's just because you know, it's a very like light
- 27:05character from the get go. So it's like, and it's just very
- 27:10hard to kind of place like what you should be feeling about her
- 27:13life. Should we be scared of her?
- 27:15No, not anymore. Like, should.
- 27:18It's kind of like, you're not really even rooting for her, are
- 27:22you? No, no.
- 27:25Well, I mean, so much of the plot involves not being aware
- 27:30with her, not being sure whether or not you can trust Megan.
- 27:33And so you're as a viewer, you're never really sure, like,
- 27:37am I rooting for her? Am I not?
- 27:38Is she double crossing? What's going on?
- 27:41But then I guess, I guess that's the problem, isn't it?
- 27:43Because old Megan might have killed some people along the
- 27:46way, like, you know, done some really bad stuff along the way.
- 27:51Yeah. Which would mean you're like,
- 27:53oh, she's still kind of psycho. But but the fact is she doesn't
- 27:57really do anything. And I it's all because a chip
- 27:59has been installed, which means that she can't kill people.
- 28:02Yeah, Yeah. I think I agree with you that
- 28:06it's a fun idea to kind of change genres.
- 28:10Like I like it when a movie takes a risk and this was, I
- 28:13think a risk. I think it was the wrong choice.
- 28:16But I know that there's always a balancing act when you do a
- 28:19sequel of like people wanting it to be different enough so that
- 28:23it's not like, oh, you're just rehashing everything you did in
- 28:25the first one, but also same enough so that people aren't
- 28:29like, why did you make this like this?
- 28:32It's got nothing to do with the original.
- 28:33So I, I, I sympathize with the problem of that.
- 28:36And at least they took a big swing and they were like, we're
- 28:39going to try something like, that's really different.
- 28:42I was listening to an interview with Jason Bloom today, who's
- 28:45the owner of Bloom House, who made this movie, And he was
- 28:49saying that they kind of got overconfident about how much
- 28:52people liked Megan. He was talking about how the
- 28:56movie was a failure, basically how Megan 2.0 has been a failure
- 28:59and it's going to be a big box office flop.
- 29:01And yeah, he said, he said he they thought that Megan was an
- 29:06icon that people were really invested in.
- 29:09And so they thought, oh, well, we can take her from a January
- 29:11release to a blockbuster summer release.
- 29:13We can take her out of out of the genre.
- 29:15We can make her look different. We can do all of these things.
- 29:18And people will still love her because she's Megan and they
- 29:20love Megan and they want more Megan.
- 29:22And he was like, actually, I think we were kind of wrong
- 29:25about all of that. And we should have stuck to the
- 29:27formula. I I think I just kind of wish
- 29:29this movie had been more horror. I think it could have been quite
- 29:34fun in the way that Terminator 2 is just the tension from that
- 29:38movie comes from being chased. Yeah.
- 29:41You're being chased by something very powerful that you can't
- 29:44stop. And no matter how far and fast
- 29:46you run, it's going to get you. And that's that doesn't really
- 29:49exist in this movie, even though it's such an obvious thing to to
- 29:52go for. Yeah, like, you're totally
- 29:54right. And also because even like, the
- 29:56first Terminator is like, like, arguably this weird, there's a
- 29:59slightly horror vibe to it anyway.
- 30:01Like it's really dark and gritty and but you're so right.
- 30:05But like, you never feel any danger for the girl.
- 30:08And like, she's the whole reason Megan's alive and going.
- 30:13Yeah, there's like, kind of no stakes, even though the stakes
- 30:16are really that the entire world is going to be taken over.
- 30:18But yeah, it's just feels weird to have like have something
- 30:22that's already planted its foot in that horror slightly more
- 30:27adult audience to then not continue going down that route
- 30:30because there's no. Yeah, as you said, the storyline
- 30:32is just a RIP off of the Terminator movies.
- 30:34But yeah. But without any of that kind of
- 30:37actual kind of scares or. Thriller.
- 30:39Yeah, the stuff that made it tense.
- 30:41And then so instead you've got this kind of like basically kind
- 30:44of Marvel style movie where the entire world is at stake, but
- 30:47you don't care because you know, it's probably just going to work
- 30:49out just fine. And there are no big surprises
- 30:52in this movie. There's no big twists.
- 30:53It's like you get your happy ending and everyone's fine and
- 30:56everyone's gets along. It's quite weird.
- 30:59Like there's no even, there's no an inversion of it.
- 31:02And also as well, like like you mentioned earlier, the Austin
- 31:05Powers reference, it does really feel like that, but without the
- 31:09kind of over the top gags, I guess.
- 31:11So it's like less funny because it's like the villain, like the
- 31:15guy, I don't even know what his name is, but the villain guy
- 31:18that's like that campy, it's like he's, I think he's
- 31:21paralysed, but then he can he can sort of walk with a machine.
- 31:25Right. Yeah, yeah, the the billionaire
- 31:27who? The billionaire guy in the
- 31:29movie. Yeah.
- 31:30Who's like who's like a who's kind of like an Elon Musk style
- 31:32character? Yeah, again, it's like he dies,
- 31:36but you don't care and it doesn't feel dangerous and it
- 31:39just feels like a romp. And it's like, I mean, the only
- 31:42thing that it does introduce that I think I actually love is
- 31:46female robots. Sure.
- 31:48I love a fembot like an Austin Powers.
- 31:52And I love a robot that's not afraid to put on a bit of blush,
- 31:56comb out her hair and put on a disco diva on the summer dress
- 32:00and go to a party, to be quite frank.
- 32:01Which is what happens with Amelia in this movie.
- 32:03You're so right. You're so right.
- 32:05She does. Yeah, because at one point Gemma
- 32:08needs to put on a sexy dress to attract the billionaire.
- 32:12And she puts on her frequent dress is boring as fuck, but
- 32:18Amelia looks hot. She's she knows how to wear a
- 32:22sequin. And I again, I, I just love this
- 32:26about these kind of movies because we've seen her.
- 32:30She is like a next level one woman killing machine who can
- 32:36like, you know, fight against machine guns and like the arm
- 32:40bombs and like kill people with like every single Kung Fu move.
- 32:43She's moved, yet the only way she can get to this part of the
- 32:47plot is by seduction and you have female charms.
- 32:51I mean, it's not like she could just walk in and just kill
- 32:53everyone straight away. And why wouldn't she?
- 32:55She's a robot. Well, she doesn't care about
- 32:57anyone. But Oh no, I'm going to wear a
- 33:00nice disco dress and I'm going to seduce the billionaire.
- 33:04Like, you're so right. And being on top of him, which
- 33:06is just so stupid. You're so right.
- 33:08I mean, she's, she's doing the Poison Ivy routine.
- 33:11Yeah. Basically, and I said this to
- 33:13you, but you didn't pick up on this, there was a bit where she
- 33:15threw him onto the circular bed and he went on all fours and she
- 33:20pulled out her finger and I was like, she's going to fucking
- 33:24finger him and finger him to death.
- 33:26That's what I thought was going to happen.
- 33:28I was like, and then like let out some electrocution vibes out
- 33:32of her fingers into his anus and I was ready for it.
- 33:35And I was like, what an invented way to kill someone.
- 33:39And then I thought you'd have to like misogynistic him being
- 33:41like, oh, I don't normally have it up there kind of vibe.
- 33:45And then he died. But alas, no.
- 33:48You were giving the movie way too much credit.
- 33:50Yeah, but I was kind of hoping for death by fingering.
- 33:53Sexy, confident. Bring it on if any movie
- 33:58producers are listening. I can't think of a single death
- 34:01by fingering in a movie. And I think it's time.
- 34:04I think it's time. Who are your favorite evil
- 34:07robots of cinema? My favorite all time evil robot
- 34:10is the Terminator three robot. Her with the slick updo and the
- 34:16kind of maroon leverette. Cats.
- 34:19I've never seen Terminator 3. Have you not?
- 34:21I don't think so. Oh my.
- 34:24But I can picture her. Oh my God I feel like I feel
- 34:29like Amelia is this such a fucking try hard in comparison
- 34:33to that bad bitch. She is so fucking cool.
- 34:37But that is that movie quite bad.
- 34:39Yeah, but in a spectacular way, in my opinion, because it's a
- 34:42Terminator, so it's all of the Terminators, but she's a hot
- 34:45robot. Yeah, great.
- 34:46So it's like it's just basically taking the weakness of
- 34:49Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger and just judged it up.
- 34:53That's good. I want to shout out Ash from
- 34:57Alien. That faggy faggy Android.
- 35:02Who gets really bitchy at the end?
- 35:03Yeah, yeah, yeah. In all of his appearances, he's
- 35:06just super faggy. I really like him.
- 35:08And also doesn't quite count. Maybe, but Daryl Hannah in Blade
- 35:13Runner. I don't really really know that.
- 35:17I think her character is called Priss.
- 35:19She's got the Lady Gaga fame Bob and a black and a black bar
- 35:23across her eyes and she's just like all flips and kicks.
- 35:27She's really good. What about C3PO?
- 35:30He's quite paggy as well. So paggy.
- 35:33So paggy. You know what I don't?
- 35:35I don't have time for C3PO. Who else is there?
- 35:40How about the Borg Queen from Star Trek?
- 35:42She's she's pretty Kunti. I don't know.
- 35:44I don't know. I don't know sci-fi, sorry, I
- 35:47don't know her. It's fine.
- 35:48Well, she's Kunti. Have you seen?
- 35:51What about Ex Machina? Oh yeah, I like her.
- 35:55Yeah, she's good. Yeah, she's really good.
- 35:58Shout out to my girl Megan Fox Subservience, which it sounds
- 36:05like the Megan universe is trying to Jack her style.
- 36:08Because if you heard about this movie that they were planning to
- 36:11have as part of the universe. So it's called Soul Mate with an
- 36:148. And I read an interview with the
- 36:17guy, that Blum guy who runs Blum House, and his his sort of
- 36:21description while they're doing that is sounds fucking terrible.
- 36:24We always felt like there might be a more adult story to tell.
- 36:28And that's really what Soulmate is.
- 36:31Soulmate is basically set in the same AI world but seen through a
- 36:35more grown up perspective, one that embraces all of the great
- 36:38erotic thrillers from the 90s. It's like Fatal Attraction but
- 36:42with robots. Gross.
- 36:46I mean fine, fine is an idea, except it has already been done
- 36:50and. By someone that you can't be
- 36:53Megan Fox and Subservience, thank you very much.
- 36:56I'd like to see Megan Fox versus Megan, quite frankly, because I
- 37:01think Subservience Robot would kick the shit out of.
- 37:05Megan, that is. The other kind of problem I had
- 37:07with Amelia is that they made her a serious robot.
- 37:11And the tone of this movie is fun.
- 37:13It's supposed to be fun. So don't give me a serious
- 37:17Benbot in this movie. Give me a villain who's just as
- 37:22Kunti as Megan. You're right, I think that would
- 37:24have been fun. Oh my God, if Amelia was Kunti,
- 37:27that would have really helped this movie.
- 37:28But it's almost like she is in kind of a, a serious movie.
- 37:32Yeah. Like a a sad sort of C grade
- 37:35sci-fi thriller. But she sort of exists in that
- 37:38world, doesn't she? And yeah.
- 37:40And so it's like Megan is the only one having any fun in this
- 37:43movie, which is quite weird. But I also feel in general, like
- 37:47I know everyone always bangs on about an AI and stuff, but I am
- 37:50really worried about where we're going.
- 37:52You know, Timberland, He's like, he's just launched the world's
- 37:56first AI pop star. Oh.
- 37:58No. And it's like she's beautiful.
- 38:01I don't know where ethnically she's meant to be from, but
- 38:05she's, you know, she's absolutely stunning and looks
- 38:09real and kind of looks a bit kind of cool.
- 38:11K pop girl vibe. But it's just we're getting into
- 38:14a position now where it's like, you know, the music industry, as
- 38:18we've seen with like Britney Spears and people like that has
- 38:20been so like fucked up by like men bosses that we're now just
- 38:25getting into a position where like men are owning the entire
- 38:30embodiment of what this pop star is and therefore making
- 38:32decisions for it and influencing people.
- 38:36Yeah, it's like the the next evolution of men being horrible,
- 38:42controlling, gross. I guess at least in this case
- 38:47there isn't a real woman being harmed by it.
- 38:49But it is. It is fucked up.
- 38:52Chauvinist and sexist and misogynist and chauvinist and
- 38:55sexist and misogynist. Well, what do we like about this
- 38:58movie? Because I we are giving it a bit
- 39:00of a hard time right now. But I actually, I got to say, I
- 39:02came out of the cinema feeling like, oh, I had fun.
- 39:06I had a nice time. I've been on such a weird roller
- 39:08coaster with this one, I think. But because they were so
- 39:11confident isn't even as this like executive said that they
- 39:15created an icon. I just didn't want to like it.
- 39:17But there were so many flaws in the movie that actually there
- 39:22are things I'm like, oh, this is actually more enjoyable.
- 39:25Like I chuckled so loudly in the scene where she didn't want to
- 39:31reveal herself to the girl. What's the girl's name again?
- 39:33I should know the fucking girl's name.
- 39:35What is it? Katie.
- 39:36Katie Yeah. So the idea is that that Megan
- 39:41has created a layer to protect Katie and everyone else from
- 39:45getting killed. And it's like in prison that
- 39:48she's basically made a self-sufficient bunker where
- 39:51they can all live. And she's got clothes and food
- 39:53and she's made a replica of Katie's room.
- 39:56And it's all it all is, you know what it is?
- 39:59And it's like, I'm not quite sure how she's managed to do it
- 40:02and like physically hire people and get it made, but she's done
- 40:05it. And yet she's got she has got a
- 40:07robot body. And it's just this, like, old
- 40:10robot. And she's like, hiding in the
- 40:12shadows. And she's like, don't look at
- 40:14me, don't look at me. And I just found that so fucking
- 40:18funny. And I don't know why, but I
- 40:20think there were bits like that through the movie that just
- 40:22seemed so out of place. And I'm not quite sure why it
- 40:25was there that it just, yeah, it made me laugh.
- 40:27What about you? Yeah, I think I feel the same as
- 40:29you, that there were moments that did surprise me and really
- 40:33make me chuckle, like Megan sings another song in this one,
- 40:37and the song choice was really funny.
- 40:39And yeah, you're right, that actually got a laugh from me.
- 40:42But on paper I'm like, Oh my God, I'm not going to laugh.
- 40:45Because it it started to make me think of what's the film with Oh
- 40:49Dead Deadpool. Yeah.
- 40:52It was all becoming a little bit too smug straight movie Deadpool
- 40:57vibe. Oh, now we're inserting a well
- 40:59known song into an. Action sequence.
- 41:01Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, she sings Kate Bush,
- 41:05and Kate Bush approved it. Really.
- 41:07Yeah. I mean, that's wild.
- 41:09That's wild. As part of the approval process,
- 41:11Kate Bush had to watch the scene to check the context it was
- 41:15being used in. And I find that she I find the
- 41:18fact she watched Megan singing A woman's worth.
- 41:23Yeah, this, this woman's work. This woman's.
- 41:25Worth. Oh, is that?
- 41:25Yeah. Yeah, it's a.
- 41:27It's a deep cut. Not well, not a deep cut.
- 41:29It's a It's an odd choice for movie.
- 41:33It's not the obvious Kate Bush song.
- 41:36Yeah, it was fun. It was fun.
- 41:38I always think of Derry King when I think of that song.
- 41:41Who is this drag king that we know who?
- 41:44It's kind of like an anthropomorphized cow and milks
- 41:48themselves to that song. So that added another layer of
- 41:51delight for me also. So where would you stand?
- 41:54Where does Megan stand to you as a kind of a a sort of a OK gay
- 41:58icon? Oh no.
- 42:01But like, does she have any kind of like admirable traits that
- 42:04would you rate her at all? No, I think as soon as someone's
- 42:08paying to have the marketing in a gay pride parade and like a
- 42:12bunch of women dressed up as Megan, I'm like, no, you're
- 42:15shoving it down my throat. I'm the same as you.
- 42:17I don't want this. I didn't choose this Like, I
- 42:20want it to be underground. I want us to have chosen it.
- 42:23Us to have reclaimed it. And yeah, they leaned in too
- 42:27hard. I I hated the trailer for this
- 42:29movie so much. I think that is one of the real
- 42:32reasons why it flopped because it was like pink explosions,
- 42:37Britney Spears. Like it just felt like it was
- 42:40trying so hard to market to the gaze that actually when watching
- 42:45it, I was like, oh, this isn't doing that really at all.
- 42:48It's a different movie. It's not a huge success, but
- 42:52it's also not a failure and it's not as it's not shoving it down.
- 42:57It's I'm not shoving itself down my throat as much as I thought
- 42:59it was going. To be, I mean, normally you like
- 43:01that, don't you? Normally when something's being
- 43:05shoved down that you can't help yourself, but yeah, to ingest
- 43:08it. Sorry.
- 43:11But yeah, like, I guess overall, like I, I just think it wasn't
- 43:14as bad as it should be when you when you describe it.
- 43:19And yet it also wasn't that good.
- 43:21It was just very solidly mid. But like, it was a hot day.
- 43:26I had a nice time getting cool in the cinema.
- 43:28It got some chuckles out of me. It was a little too long.
- 43:32And I mean your, your guests that flew over from Canada, they
- 43:35were loving their lives, weren't they?
- 43:37Yeah, exactly, Exactly. We went with my sister and
- 43:39friend Rachel, and like, yeah, they were having a lovely time.
- 43:42I mean, I think everyone in the cinema had like a pretty fine
- 43:45time. That's just not really a glowing
- 43:48endorsement either. I think the.
- 43:49Problem is as well though, is like you write, you're right
- 43:51with this trailer is it's like people seem to think, and maybe
- 43:54the AI research seems to think that like gays love it when you
- 43:58just shout gay at their face. It's like gay rainbow fierce.
- 44:04Slay. It's like hunty.
- 44:06They don't, they don't seem to realise that there's, there's
- 44:08more, there's more depth to kind of people and like they might
- 44:12need a different kind of story to cling on to.
- 44:15Do you know what I mean? It's like, it's not enough.
- 44:18That's not enough. Yeah.
- 44:19And so marketing it that way has obviously flopped.
- 44:22And it's like probably cost this franchise its future because Dum
- 44:27Dums were like, oh, we'll just do what kind of worked last
- 44:30time. And also I bet it's made them go
- 44:32right. We will never do anything
- 44:34remotely linked to any LGBTQIA plus people because it will flop
- 44:39and no one will be interested. Well, that must be so annoying,
- 44:42right? Like marketing to queer people
- 44:44must be so annoying because as soon as we feel like we're being
- 44:46marketed to, we switch off. And then we're like, no, we only
- 44:50like things that we pick as if you try and if you try and
- 44:53market to us or if you try and even support us, we're going to
- 44:56be like, fuck you, you and your giant corporations.
- 44:58No, everything that has to be underground and weird and
- 45:02countercultural or we're not interested.
- 45:05Sounds about right, doesn't it? Yeah.
- 45:07I mean, because she's, she's not, she's not queer though,
- 45:10Megan, There's no like, you know, I wouldn't be against a
- 45:12little lesbian love story between her and Casey.
- 45:16Oh yeah, budding romance. That would have been cute.
- 45:18But just like a cute, you know, but but that's the thing.
- 45:20They weren't they were never going to do that.
- 45:22No, because it's like that's when it it goes into like a
- 45:25dangerous worm of being queer but just being like basically a
- 45:29robotic fag hag. That's such a good description.
- 45:39I remember seeing an interview and they were like, Oh my God,
- 45:42does she wait? Megan is serving looks.
- 45:45You will not be ready when you see her, Bob.
- 45:48I fucking hated that Bob. Yes, and they made such a big
- 45:52deal of it. Do you think they did the trans
- 45:57flag colours the little highlights in a house on purpose
- 46:00or? Isn't it?
- 46:01No, I think that's. Just was that hunty sleigh?
- 46:03What does that mean? I think that was just you.
- 46:07Yeah, but they get Megan to dance again and it's really
- 46:10annoying. It doesn't work.
- 46:12And like the line, hold on to your vaginas.
- 46:15Hold on to your vaginas. It's not, it's not that funny,
- 46:19but like you could tell they're like, yeah, this is the one
- 46:22that's going to get them. Yeah, exactly.
- 46:24And even when like what you see, I'm sorry listeners, but like, I
- 46:28can't even remember the names of the characters because it it was
- 46:31just one of those things that was like an enjoyable 2 hours.
- 46:34But just kind of like you say that about a lot of things,
- 46:37couldn't you? Yeah, you do in two hours.
- 46:39You don't you? They don't make a lasting impact
- 46:41on you always, do they? Yeah, in fact, some of them you
- 46:44just block out. Yeah, but yeah, it's this.
- 46:47So the mum, not the mum, the sister character, whatever her
- 46:50bloody name is, when she kind of has the chip, she's so she gets
- 46:54chipped and has Megan in her brain and basically becomes
- 46:59slightly schizophrenic at some point, which is problematic.
- 47:03But there's that bit where she like when Megan is kind of
- 47:06inside of her. So therefore she's getting
- 47:08violent. And then Megan's like, I know
- 47:11you're enjoying this. I know your heart rate is going
- 47:13up. I was like, oh, that's, that's
- 47:14an interesting area. If we were back in the horror
- 47:18realm. But you know, oh shit, Like
- 47:20she's getting kind of possessed by this and like she's getting
- 47:23off on the violence and getting off on that.
- 47:25Yeah, because she's so repressed and.
- 47:27Again, there's like this thing with this, this character, she's
- 47:31meant to be like an incredible scientist, so incredible in her
- 47:35field of AI that you know the FBI and other kind of world
- 47:39leaders want her. But yet the only real conflict
- 47:45she has other than like this bitchy robo fag is that her love
- 47:49interest is also a bit evil and like he might he might reprogram
- 47:54her. It's so basic and redundant.
- 47:57Yeah. Like there's no, like there's
- 47:58no, you know, like she doesn't get tempted by AI or anything.
- 48:02She's just this kind of like wet nothing woman.
- 48:07Well, they spend so much time on these set pieces and this, these
- 48:11plot things that don't matter. Instead of yeah, thinking about
- 48:15character, like there's so many mentions about, like, how can
- 48:20Gemma afford to live in this house?
- 48:22Yeah. And it's like, I guess you're
- 48:24supposed to understand that, like, Megan set it up for her
- 48:27and like has been pulling strings behind the scenes to
- 48:30like, give them this fancy house, but they're like, I don't
- 48:33care. Just like.
- 48:35It's like, hello, we've seen these movies before.
- 48:38Everybody always lives outside of their means.
- 48:40We never question it, you know? Oh, I'm.
- 48:43Just like over explain this stuff.
- 48:44I'm a lonely writer. This just arrived in New York.
- 48:47You know, I'm 23, and I live in a loft apartment in Brooklyn.
- 48:51It's like, yeah, we're buying it.
- 48:54And yeah, that's just like one example, but there's just so
- 48:56much, so many things like that. You're like, why is this being
- 49:00so explained? Can we just have like some fun
- 49:02action sequences and like, get back to the roots, you know?
- 49:08And it's like they also give Megan this, like, redemption arc
- 49:12as well. Yeah.
- 49:13I'm like, they sort of make her understand that, you know,
- 49:18killing people isn't maybe the most useful way of being and.
- 49:23I think I would have been OK with that.
- 49:25Obviously I'm not. I'm like, no, yeah, keep, keep
- 49:28it edgy. Sure, sure, sure, sure.
- 49:30We've got, we've got this, we've got this robo fag on our side,
- 49:33but she's a robo fag now. She's not a robo fag gag.
- 49:37We've got this robo fag on our side.
- 49:39And you know, I'm kind of like hanging around with her.
- 49:41Let's hope she doesn't kill my next boyfriend.
- 49:43Whoa, do you know what I mean? For sure.
- 49:45Sure, Sure, Sure. Sure, sure, sure.
- 49:46Sure. Yeah.
- 49:47I don't need her to be good. Keep her dangerous.
- 49:51Well, this is what I was saying. And I don't know if we're going
- 49:53to get a Megan 3 now just because, as you said, this is
- 49:55like doomed at the box office. But like, I felt like the
- 49:59trajectory of where they were going with this movie was that
- 50:01like when KG grows up and maybe starts dating and having her
- 50:04first boyfriend, then Megan's going to become like the
- 50:07jealous, you know, overprotective parent buff and
- 50:10the bride style. OK, what about the gowns, the
- 50:15costumes, the visual look of it all?
- 50:18OK, the gowns. It's giving AI to me in the
- 50:23sense of like it just. It's fine.
- 50:26Yeah. Like not there wasn't really
- 50:28anything that I was like particularly cool.
- 50:31And I love, I'm like you. I love like a bit of sci-fi.
- 50:34I love a bit of sort of superhero.
- 50:35I love a bit of fantasy, you know.
- 50:39You know, I like a kind of a cool robo suit or something.
- 50:42And again, I was just like, it's like the robo suit made me think
- 50:46of Kylie Minogue's Wow Wow Wow video.
- 50:49Oh yeah, yeah, I see that. A Kylie Minogue pop video from
- 50:5315 years ago, essentially. Yeah, the first movie I think
- 51:00was quite cool in doing that uncanny valley thing where
- 51:04you're like, you're not sure if you're watching CGI or not.
- 51:07And like the the way Megan moves is creepy and weird and there's
- 51:12like something kind of off with it all.
- 51:14And it's like they did a good job of like blurring the line
- 51:17between reality and CGI and robotics and real life.
- 51:22This one I felt lent too far into the CGI.
- 51:24So I just felt a lot of times like I was watching just like
- 51:27entire scenes that were computer generated and there weren't any
- 51:31real people on screen. Yeah.
- 51:34And so then you're like, well, I don't care what they're wearing
- 51:36or, or what they're doing because it's just doesn't feel
- 51:40real anymore. It like, took me out of it.
- 51:43Do you know what I mean? Yeah.
- 51:48Or should we rate it then? Let's rate it.
- 51:50Let's rate it. So we need to give it a score
- 51:53out of 10 for Merrells. I'm Julia Child.
- 51:57For the quality of the movie. Bon appetit.
- 52:01I mean, it's zero to me. 0. Yeah, it's a zero.
- 52:07It's like so much money has been spent on this film, and it's
- 52:10just such like a hodgepodge of genres and ideas.
- 52:15And it's kind of like if you've got that much money to spend on
- 52:17something, I think it must be quite difficult to like, I did
- 52:20not create something possible. Do you know what I mean?
- 52:23I just, I just looking back on it, I'm just, there's just
- 52:26nothing of any real worth to it as a.
- 52:28Film. I, I, I mean, I agree with you.
- 52:30It doesn't have anything to say, but I did.
- 52:33I think because I sat there and enjoyed it.
- 52:35It must have been there, was there.
- 52:38Wasn't. Didn't ask me if I enjoyed it
- 52:41though. I know because that's when the
- 52:43Liza scale hits. Yeah.
- 52:45I think for me it's like in, it's like a four.
- 52:49I thought the writing was terrible, I thought the acting
- 52:52was terrible, I thought it was shot really badly.
- 52:56Fair, fair. Yeah, I think, I think it's like
- 52:58a four for me. I think it was just basically it
- 53:00was very safe and passable and it wasn't what I wanted it to
- 53:04be, but it like what it was. I guess it was like a bad
- 53:08version of that, but not like the worst version of that, if
- 53:11that makes sense. But yeah, live your truth,
- 53:14sweetie. Yeah, I just.
- 53:16Yeah, I just, it just didn't feel like a kind of a quality
- 53:19product. It felt like it felt like what
- 53:21we've been talking about all this episode, like it felt like
- 53:24Chat GPTGPTGPT has generated a possible funny action movie and
- 53:31this is what the outcome would be.
- 53:33Yeah, fair. OK, well what about Liza's for
- 53:38the camp factor? I think this is quite
- 53:40interesting because we're kind of in the midst of a film and we
- 53:45don't normally have something. We don't normally analyze films
- 53:48that are this like fresh out the gate, do we?
- 53:50We normally have them to like marinade because like, one of
- 53:53the things I thought about this movie is about how badly it's
- 53:57going to age, especially when like, I guess when technology
- 54:01becomes more superior. And I was like, I can't imagine.
- 54:05I mean, I'm not, you know, I'm not Mystic Meg.
- 54:07I can't look into the future, but I can't imagine that this is
- 54:09really where technology is going to head.
- 54:11But maybe we will have Megan S things on our laptop following
- 54:16us around as robots. So I think I think it's got
- 54:18potential to age badly. I think it is obviously a box
- 54:23office flop and we love something flaccid, don't we?
- 54:28I think a lot of it's humour is is based around kind of current
- 54:33trends. So again, I think that has
- 54:36potential to get terrible. And I love a fallen diva.
- 54:41You know, I love some. I love an underdog story, and
- 54:43that's where. There's a lot of tragedy
- 54:45happening with Megan. Yeah, she's like kind of fallen
- 54:48off her pedestal and isn't quite the hot property we used to be.
- 54:51So I think there's a lot of potential for this to be a
- 54:54future camp classic. I can see that.
- 54:58So where we sit now though? Yeah, I think in 10 years time,
- 55:04I think if we were to do this again, I think I would be giving
- 55:06a higher school. But right now I'm going to give
- 55:08it. Oh, oh, I mean, I did laugh.
- 55:15I'm going to give it a four. Right.
- 55:18Yeah. Queer joy?
- 55:21No. No.
- 55:24Underdog flop vibes, sort of. But like, it's also a really big
- 55:33budget thing, but it is flopping.
- 55:34But it's like also very mainstream stupid fun.
- 55:41Sure, I could give it some stupid fun.
- 55:44Ongoing legacy. I mean, time will tell, but it's
- 55:48hard to say. Yeah, I think I'm with you and
- 55:53yeah, I'll meet you at a four. I'll meet you at a four.
- 55:55And like, you know what? I could see this at A7 one day.
- 56:00Yeah, maybe, maybe. But you know, it's it's like,
- 56:05you know, are we all of those people that when they first saw
- 56:07barbed wire, they just didn't get it?
- 56:11And that and that is our perfect scoring film, isn't it?
- 56:14So like, you know, so maybe this is maybe she has maybe Megan has
- 56:21what was the the last show girl in her.
- 56:24Maybe Megan has that as a trajectory.
- 56:26She's the next Pamela Anderson. Oh, so in 30 years we'll be
- 56:30watching Megan as like a washed up housebot?
- 56:33Yeah. Who?
- 56:36Who just wants to slay? Yeah, he just wants to.
- 56:38Slay one more day. But no, but I'm like, I am glad
- 56:42that we saw something that was like new.
- 56:44I do think it's good for us to like look at something new.
- 56:46But I just think it, I think a lot of joy we get in this
- 56:49podcast is like when people have been able to make movies and
- 56:52they've been able to do something genuinely like
- 56:54subversive and clever with it, even though it's a mainstream
- 56:57release. And this just feels soulless and
- 57:00doesn't feel like it's got any real kind of talent behind it.
- 57:05So. It feels like a cash grab,
- 57:06doesn't it? Yeah.
- 57:10And if and if we can't have something that is on purpose
- 57:12subversive, we love something that's been subverted in the
- 57:15decades since it was released. And totally.
- 57:17That people have thought about a lot and like found something in.
- 57:21And also just just as we're talking now, like like a film
- 57:25comes to mind that it's not the same genre, but it did have a
- 57:27big budget new release and it was like stupid like Austin
- 57:30Powers, Powersy, Barb and Star. Right.
- 57:33Yeah, and that is an example of like a really kind of commercial
- 57:37big film. I think it's just great because
- 57:40there's talent behind it and there's like passion in in what
- 57:43they've made. But it is still a big, goofy,
- 57:45stupid movie. Yeah, it's got weirdness baked
- 57:48into it. Yeah, yeah, you're so right.
- 57:50They'll probably do a sequel of that and it'll be shit.
- 57:56I also wonder if we're just irritable because we're like
- 57:58drowning. Really warmly.
- 58:00Fluid I'd be. I'd be intrigued to see what
- 58:03people thought though if they did, if they think we are being
- 58:05too harsh with this. Yeah, well, if you saw this
- 58:07movie, let us know. Send us a Send us Adm.
- 58:10It turns out there weren't really that many spoilers,
- 58:12actually. So can we just retract all of
- 58:13our spoiler alerts? Yeah, OK.
- 58:16As I say, there's not nothing really happens that matters in
- 58:18this movie to spoil. No.
- 58:20Anyway, yeah, let us know what you think of this movie.
- 58:23Give us a five star rating wherever you're listening, and I
- 58:27guess we'll be back in two more weeks with some more camp
- 58:29classics. Yeah, and I guess if you want to
- 58:32let go of your vaginas now, you're more than welcome to.
- 58:35Thank you for listening. Bye.
- 58:39Get away from her, you bitch. Classic.
- 58:44He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders
- 58:47right before she died. No, Hannah thought.
- 58:55You become a prostitute or a dog at it.
- 58:57I used to love doggy chow. I used to love doggy chow too.
