- 0:00Is your ex a narcissist? Does your ex have a dismissive,
- 0:05avoidant attachment style? Is your ex a narcissist with a

- 0:47And of course, the link to that is also underneath every video
- 0:50and podcast. So it can be confusing when
- 0:56trying to figure out if someone is a narcissist or whether they
- 1:01are a dismissive avoidance because we're talking about two
- 1:03separate things. Narcissism has to do with
- 1:07personality. It's a personality disorder,
- 1:11whereas avoidance has to do with attachment style.
- 1:15So a narcissist may have an avoidant attachment style, but
- 1:21someone who has an avoidant attachment style isn't
- 1:24necessarily a narcissist. And from my research, it seems
- 1:29that narcissists usually have an anxious or a fearful avoidant
- 1:33attachment style actually due to needing narcissistic supply,
- 1:38whereas A dismissive avoidant doesn't need other people and
- 1:42usually pushes them away. So before I give you my list of
- 1:45what you look for to know whether someone is a narc as we
- 1:49shall call them, or ADAI want to tell you to make sure that you
- 1:54listen till the end. Because I have a comment from a
- 1:56woman who actually dated both, and I think you're going to be
- 2:00very interested to hear what she has to say.
- 2:03OK, so first let's talk about vulnerability.
- 2:07Vulnerable narcissists, often referred to as covert
- 2:11narcissists, can come off as being quite vulnerable.
- 2:15However, their vulnerability is a manipulation because they feel
- 2:21that they will be able to draw more people in by being falsely
- 2:27vulnerable. DA's on the other hand, do not
- 2:31like vulnerability. It's uncomfortable and they try
- 2:34to avoid it at all costs. They associate it with negative
- 2:38emotions and weakness. They think that it will lead to
- 2:41a lack of privacy and freedom. They struggle to open up Next,
- 2:48let's talk about everyone's favorite.
- 2:50Everyone mentions this when talking about both narcs and
- 2:53DAS, and that is the silent treatment.
- 2:57So both narcs and DAS tend to Stonewall.
- 3:01It's also known as stonewalling. But their reasons are very
- 3:06different. The intent behind the
- 3:08stonewalling, the silent treatment, is different.
- 3:11A covert narc will use the silent treatment more than the
- 3:15overt narc, who will tend to get loud and angry.
- 3:19The narc uses it as a punishment to get a reaction.
- 3:22It's intentional and premeditated, whereas with the
- 3:28dismissive avoidant it's more an issue of self protection for
- 3:31them. Usually the distancing, since it
- 3:34actually is more distancing than stonewalling, will occur after
- 3:38they've felt vulnerable. So it's not aimed at hurting the
- 3:42partner, but it's a way to feel safe.
- 3:45They do it as protection, it's not premeditated, and they do it
- 3:50when they deactivate. OK, so that's the big
- 3:53difference. It's the intent.
- 3:55Next, we have attention and validation.
- 3:59Since Narcs aren't able to validate themselves, it's a
- 4:01definite need for them. They crave attention.
- 4:05They like to be the center of attention.
- 4:08A covert narc will play the victim card to get attention and
- 4:11maybe use something like illness to get that attention.
- 4:15And while we all like attention, of course avoidance don't need
- 4:20it, but they certainly appreciate it.
- 4:23DA's don't like to be the center of attention.
- 4:25They're very good at meeting their own needs.
- 4:27They don't need you for attention or validation to feed
- 4:30their ego. Next, everyone's favorite love
- 4:34bombing narcs, need admiration. They want people to look up to
- 4:41them and think that they're amazing and special.
- 4:45And they spend a lot of time wondering, what do people think
- 4:48of them? So they do things to reel you
- 4:51in, and they love bomb you because they want you to think
- 4:56about them all the time. They're trying to win you over.
- 5:00DAS, on the other hand, are the total opposite.
- 5:05They're actually repulsed by love bombing and would never do
- 5:10it themselves. Dating ADA never feels
- 5:14excessive. If anything, it's the opposite.
- 5:16You feel like you're not getting enough.
- 5:18That's why I personally think that ADA would not date a narc
- 5:25for very long. Because when the love bombing
- 5:27starts, they wouldn't wouldn't trust it and they would head for
- 5:30the hills. So that's a big difference.
- 5:33If it's love bombing, it's a narc.
- 5:35It is not ADA. Trust me on that.
- 5:38Next one is need for power and control.
- 5:41Narcs needs to feel powerful and in control of you.
- 5:44This is where we see the gas lighting, the abusive behavior,
- 5:48and the stalking behaviors. DA's, on the other hand, want to
- 5:52have control over their environment, not a person.
- 5:57They're not interested in having power and control over others.
- 5:59They're fiercely independent because they fear losing their
- 6:02autonomy. Confrontation.
- 6:06Another big difference. Narcs start conflicts and
- 6:09confrontation because they want to isolate you and devalue you.
- 6:14The D8 does not. They try to avoid confrontation
- 6:17at all costs. So this is a big difference
- 6:21between the two. If they're constantly
- 6:23confronting you, they are a narc.
- 6:26If they're avoiding confrontation, they're ADA.
- 6:29Very simple. Next sensitivity to criticism.
- 6:35The Narc's response to criticism is rage, being hurtful,
- 6:38defensive, passive aggressive, contemptuous, stonewalling.
- 6:44Whereas the DA they withdraw, isolate, feel humiliated, they
- 6:50avoid, and they don't feel contempt.
- 6:53OK, another big difference. Empathy.
- 6:57Narcs do not have empathy, and they may actively try to hurt
- 7:02people they want to exploit and take advantage of other people
- 7:05and situations. On the other hand, DA's do feel
- 7:09empty. Sorry, empathy, but they may not
- 7:13always express it because they think it makes them look weak
- 7:17and vulnerable. But they're certainly not trying
- 7:22to actively hurt people. Grandiosity.
- 7:27Narcs are grandiose. They need a lot of attention.
- 7:29As I've said before, they want to show off all the time and
- 7:33they want you to think that they are amazing and more special
- 7:36than everyone else. Whereas DAS are not grandiose,
- 7:39they are not approval seeking, and if someone gives them a lot
- 7:43of compliments, they tend to pull away and not trust it,
- 7:47whereas A narc would just eat it up.
- 7:50Status. Another difference?
- 7:52Narcs are constantly focused on status, power, success, beauty,
- 7:57and being better than everyone else.
- 7:59They cling to powerful people. They're social climbers and they
- 8:03want to find other high status people.
- 8:05So they'll name drop and talk about people they've been with.
- 8:09They need to prove that they have high status, whereas the
- 8:12DA's they're more like can you just leave me alone?
- 8:18They're independent and couldn't care less.
- 8:20They don't really spend a lot of time thinking about status and
- 8:23powerful people. And by the way, if you find this
- 8:28video helpful, please like and share so that other people will
- 8:34find out about it and the YouTube algorithm wouldn't know,
- 8:38will know to show it to more people.
- 8:41OK, a few more differences. Arrogance Narcs are arrogant, as
- 8:48if we didn't already know that. They're trying to show that
- 8:51they're better than everyone else.
- 8:52They're condescending and they put other people down.
- 8:56They're self-centered and they're coming from a place of
- 8:58ego, pride, and power. With the DA now, they may be
- 9:03standoffish and aloof, but they're not trying to get you to
- 9:07think they're better than everyone else.
- 9:09Sure, they may be slow to warm up, but that doesn't come from a
- 9:13place of arrogance. OK, so hopefully this clears up
- 9:17the confusion between a narcissist and ADA.
- 9:22Just because someone is pulling away doesn't automatically make
- 9:25them a narcissist, as you learned.
- 9:27So be careful who you point that finger at, because when you
- 9:30point a finger, remember there's three more pointing back at you.
- 9:34And keep in mind that at the end of the day, instead of trying to
- 9:38become a therapist and learn all about narcissism or avoidance,
- 9:43keep this in mind. If you're not happy with this
- 9:46person in your life, then what's the point?
- 9:51Why are you there with them? A relationship should make your
- 9:54life better, not worse, happier, not sadder.
- 9:58Otherwise, again, why are we there?
- 10:00You're wasting your life away. And for what?
- 10:03So don't become a therapist and try to find out.
- 10:06Are they a narcissist? Are they?
- 10:07Avoid? What are they?
- 10:09If you're not happy, if you're not being treated right, it
- 10:12doesn't matter what they are. Just get out.
- 10:16OK, so let me read this comment before we go.
- 10:22And as I said, it's from a woman who dated both, she said.
- 10:26I get so angry and frustrated when hurt people pop off and say
- 10:31dismissives are all narcs for a multitude of reasons.
- 10:34I've dated a real narc and it was the epitome of mental
- 10:38torture and I've dated ADA. The difference was huge.
- 10:43Like peanut butter and Jelly, they both go together on a
- 10:46sandwich. Well, depending on where you
- 10:48live, but they have no real similar ingredient otherwise.
- 10:55Dating that narcissist for years turned me into an FA myself.
- 11:00Fearful avoidance and hearing people say all avoidance or
- 11:03narcissist just ran is super triggering and hurtful.
- 11:09Exactly. So now you know the differences
- 11:12between ADA and a narc. So stop calling everybody a
- 11:17narc. Now I want to hear from you.
- 11:20Were you dating a narc or an avoidant or God forbid, A narc
- 11:26with a dismissive avoidance style?
