Latest / Cage Match: A Roundabout Way of Meeting Nicolas Cage / Season 1 Recap
Transcript
- 0:00Oh God. Oh my God.
- 0:19Daddy, that's not going to make sense in chronological order.
- 0:23No, that's a call for that in like a couple of weeks.
- 0:27Yeah, so there's a sneak preview to what's coming for you.
- 0:31What's coming for your ear holes?
- 0:32Yeah, it made me unhappy.
- 0:35It'll make it'll make you unhappy, too.
- 0:38That's a cage match promise.
- 0:40So I guess we should say welcome back to cage match,
- 0:43call in a roundabout way of meeting Nicholas Cage.
- 0:45I'm Sean here with my co-host Nick and our producer Peter.
- 0:49Hi. And this is a special episode.
- 0:52We're going to kind of look back at the last.
- 0:55However long this has been over a year.
- 0:57Yeah, it's I think we've gotten 15 months into this.
- 1:02That's pretty good. 14 months.
- 1:04No, going out 15. Yeah, that's a long haul.
- 1:06We we got 15 more months to go to.
- 1:09Yeah, we really did commit to this thing, didn't we?
- 1:12It was a lot of dedication to hanging out together.
- 1:15That's the worst part.
- 1:18I mean, we do hang out together a lot,
- 1:20but I feel like this is kind of this is kind of a doubling down of the situation.
- 1:24What do you guys think?
- 1:25Do you want to just run quickly through the bracket
- 1:28and talk about any that like really stood out to you?
- 1:31I could do that. Sure.
- 1:33Yeah. Guide me through this experience.
- 1:34Yeah. Let's let's take a look back on the previous year.
- 1:38From the from the beginning, where did we start off?
- 1:40So we started off with Face Off and Jujitsu.
- 1:43That was the right call.
- 1:44It was a great way to start this off. High highs and low lows. Yeah.
- 1:49My only regret on this one is
- 1:51this sort of the fault of my finding these movies is that
- 1:54that really was not a Nick Cage movie.
- 1:57Although the only thing that was notable about it was Nick Cage.
- 1:59So maybe it is. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:02I mean, it was more of a Nick Cage movie than Kick Ass turns out to be.
- 2:04Again, spoilers for the future.
- 2:06Now, yeah, I remember him being in that a lot more.
- 2:09I mean, he made an impact, certainly.
- 2:11Just like he did in Jujitsu.
- 2:13True. And we're back on track.
- 2:14Perfect. Thanks, Sean. Good segue.
- 2:17What's that?
- 2:18But it also defined a lot of a lot of good things for us,
- 2:22like genital swap technology. Yeah, for sure.
- 2:24Yeah, we started strong.
- 2:26So then next up, we went into adaptation and Army of One,
- 2:30which is probably one of our more contentious decisions.
- 2:35Yeah, I'll get a lot of shit for that.
- 2:36And that's fine. Rightfully so.
- 2:39But I still hold to my argument at the moment of
- 2:43if I was going to show somebody a Nicholas Cage movie,
- 2:46like if we were just hanging out 90 percent of the time,
- 2:49I would show them Army of One before I showed them adaptation,
- 2:53despite how good adaptation is.
- 2:56Yeah, you're not wrong.
- 2:58Yeah, I know. It's still a fair argument.
- 3:00I just am like a little cranky about it.
- 3:02I mean, what other movie starts off with Nicholas Cage
- 3:05flying through the air on a red, white and blue hang glider
- 3:08with the boombox and a katana? Yeah, there can be only one.
- 3:12I mean, that is kind of a quintessential Nick Cage performance.
- 3:15And the voice, the voice was just incredible as well.
- 3:18It's a real delight. Ma'am.
- 3:22Yeah, we'll get back into that soon enough.
- 3:24I can't wait to talk about that one again.
- 3:25See, I'm already glad it won.
- 3:28I never regretted that decision.
- 3:30Yeah, I suppose. Spoiler alert for anyone listening to this.
- 3:33But I assume you've listened to most of our back catalog at this point.
- 3:36But yeah, we're going to talk about which ones win.
- 3:39Oh, yeah. Don't start in this episode, dummy. Idiot.
- 3:42So, yeah, then we went into Pig and Left Behind.
- 3:44Pig was a big breakout for me.
- 3:46And no regrets. No regrets there.
- 3:49Moving past Left Behind. Left Behind.
- 3:51I mean, we left that behind. It is one of my bottom three.
- 3:54It's definitely a bottom.
- 3:55This is a bad bottom. Birdie and the Wicker Man.
- 3:57I completely stand by my decision to have Wicker Man go forward.
- 4:03That movie is unhinged.
- 4:05It's a really terrific movie. He punches so many women.
- 4:07He does punch a lot of women.
- 4:08I just hope more people watch Birdie because it is a great movie.
- 4:12You should. Yeah.
- 4:13Also, we established the rule that if if a woman is trying to burn you.
- 4:16Yeah, you can punch her. You get one free punch. Yeah.
- 4:19Yeah. If you're going to punch a woman, make sure she tries to light you on fire.
- 4:22Yeah. And that I think that caveat needs to be there.
- 4:24Not just burnt, but trying to light you on fire.
- 4:28Moving on.
- 4:30So this was my least favorite week ever.
- 4:33Oh, Ghost Rider was terrific.
- 4:34You knew it right away. Yeah. Ghost Rider versus Doug.
- 4:37Ghost Rider is so amazing.
- 4:40You guys are wrong and dumb. It's so funny. I quit.
- 4:42But as bad as dog eat dog is, it's also terrific.
- 4:47I got Willem Dafoe does have Willem.
- 4:50I don't have any notes in front of me, so I don't remember who the other.
- 4:54He was a nobody. Yeah.
- 4:55He was some like Will Sasso looking to.
- 4:57I was going to say not Will Sasso.
- 4:59He was in Army of One.
- 5:01It could happen to you versus racing with the moon.
- 5:03That was the Sean Penn movie.
- 5:05Yeah. Where we saw Sean Penn's ball sack. Yeah.
- 5:07Which was good in the moonlight.
- 5:09It was just like, you know, ball sack.
- 5:10Yeah. Daytime ball sack as he jumps into some water.
- 5:14I mean, so many of these films kind of followed the same rough arc
- 5:17that a lot of them are bleeding together.
- 5:19How many movies have we seen Sean Penn's ball sack in?
- 5:23I can say one.
- 5:25They work at the bowling alley, right? Yeah. All right.
- 5:27And he does that sweet dance move. I did like him in that.
- 5:29That was a good movie. I actually really like that one.
- 5:31It was a good movie. Oh, and our first little creeper dude that I love.
- 5:36Willem. Oh, Willard.
- 5:38Willard. Yeah.
- 5:39God, I sat next to this guy in a in a.
- 5:41Yeah, I know.
- 5:43I'm going to leave all this nonsense in here, too, where we're just like that guy.
- 5:47I make it.
- 5:49It's Crispin Glover. I love Crispin Glover.
- 5:52I forgot he's in that place, such a tool bag.
- 5:55Yeah, he does. But he's on his butthole later.
- 5:57He made at least enough of an impact that I got to see.
- 6:00They're like, remember him now. Yeah.
- 6:02He's a real fucking asshole on that.
- 6:04It could happen to you, though, I think was the better performance by Nick Cage.
- 6:07And whereas Racing with the Moon was really Sean Pence balls.
- 6:10Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:11They they took the spotlight.
- 6:14All right. Then we went on to World Trade Center and Frozen Ground.
- 6:18That was a bleak.
- 6:20That was that was pretty rough.
- 6:21Frozen Ground was a cool was a good little crime drama.
- 6:24I mean, one of those based on actual event stories.
- 6:27So it's very dry, but compelling.
- 6:30And Evil Cusack was fun to watch.
- 6:32And Nick Cage put a really solid performance on.
- 6:35And there was more boobs than a World Trade Center.
- 6:37It did have Michael Payne there.
- 6:38And it did have Michael Shannon to all the Michaels, all the Michaels.
- 6:41Every Michael was in the movie.
- 6:43I just remember that movie being as much of a fucking conspiracy
- 6:47or set up as the whole actual 9-11.
- 6:51Yeah. Being funded by people who were involved
- 6:55just so they could tell their story and like sell books and shit.
- 6:58Yeah, that's kind of fucked up. Yeah.
- 7:01Yes. Then we ended up going to National Treasure
- 7:03Book of Secrets and Sorcerer's Apprentice.
- 7:05I'm glad we did the sequel to National Treasure
- 7:09before we did the first National Treasure.
- 7:11100 percent. Definitely like the second one more.
- 7:14Second one's a lot of fun.
- 7:15And if I had already been kind of like biased by watching the first one first,
- 7:20I might not have enjoyed it as much.
- 7:21Yeah. Although I do think I do think we sent Sorcerer's Apprentice ahead.
- 7:25We did, which I think was the right choice, because that movie is a lot of fun.
- 7:28Oh, that was also our first double Brockheimer, wasn't it?
- 7:32It was. No, that was Turtletop, right?
- 7:33Oh, oh, yeah, that was two Turtletops.
- 7:35Two Turtles, but also two Brockheimer films and two Brockheimer films.
- 7:39Yeah, it was a lot of Brockheimer and two Turtletops.
- 7:42But the Brockheimer.
- 7:43Then, yeah, we went to Red Rock West,
- 7:45what request against Dying of the Light that was like a second trader.
- 7:49Yeah. And the worst, the worst one, because it just was it didn't even have
- 7:53like weird, unhinged parts of it.
- 7:55No, it was just real boring.
- 7:57Red Rock West is probably the thing that I've got out of this
- 8:01that I secretly like love the most.
- 8:04Like that's probably up there with one of my favorite Nick Cage movies.
- 8:06It's so weird and strange and funny.
- 8:10Yeah, it's just a different kind of storytelling.
- 8:12Yeah, like it wasn't afraid to just like, I don't know how to describe it.
- 8:16No, it's like it's a weird comedy of errors.
- 8:19Everyone's out for themselves, but it's a lot of fun.
- 8:21Yeah. Go watch that.
- 8:23Then, yeah, we went to Raising Arizona and Trapped in Paradise.
- 8:26Oh, Trapped in Paradise.
- 8:27That one was just awful.
- 8:29Really interesting behind the scenes, like stuff behind it.
- 8:32But the movie itself is so bad. It's dumb.
- 8:35It's what you would expect to watch on Comedy Central when you're like
- 8:37hung over a shit on a Saturday morning or 12 or 12.
- 8:41Yeah, it's a shitty movie. Don't watch that movie.
- 8:45But Raising Arizona, unless you need a Nicolas Cage Christmas movie.
- 8:48Yes. Then you can watch it.
- 8:49Yeah. So then leaving Las Vegas and the runner trying to remember what the runner was.
- 8:54It was like a Mississippi politician.
- 8:56Oh, OK. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:58Another very sure.
- 9:00Not a bad performance, but just nothing substance in the film.
- 9:03Yeah, it was a nothing burger.
- 9:04Could be good if it were done differently and had like a good quality writer.
- 9:08Yeah. But so if you just did it differently and somebody else wrote it.
- 9:13New cast. Yeah.
- 9:14New director photography.
- 9:15Still Nicolas Cage.
- 9:16But no, obviously. Otherwise, we wouldn't bother talking about.
- 9:19But he would play the wife role.
- 9:20Oh, that'd be great. Yeah.
- 9:22Then we had Color Out of Space and Looking Glass.
- 9:25Color Out of Space is the movie that gave me the idea for this podcast,
- 9:31because I was thoroughly in the camp of, oh, Nick Cage is just a bad actor
- 9:35in a lot of things. And I saw this film assuming it would be bad
- 9:39because most Lovecraft adaptations are bad. Exactly.
- 9:43And just like he was great in it.
- 9:45The movie itself is a lot of fun.
- 9:47It's a great adaptation of my favorite Lovecraft story.
- 9:50Really enjoy this one.
- 9:52Yeah, that was a really cool one.
- 9:53And the art direction in the movie really kind of blew me away
- 9:57because their use of colors was just super like strong and vivid.
- 10:01And it caught my attention.
- 10:03The one downside to this one being the director had like a trilogy planned
- 10:06and then got canceled immediately after this came out.
- 10:09Yeah. He had some domestic abuse allegations at the time.
- 10:13Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:14Not good.
- 10:16Fucking stop hitting your wives, dudes.
- 10:18Unless they try and light you on fire. Right.
- 10:19Yeah. Then you get one.
- 10:21So speaking of hitting women, because I think that happens in this one, too.
- 10:24Drive angry and stolen with the next movie.
- 10:29Oh, yeah. So drive angry.
- 10:31I don't remember why we fucked how we fucked this one up as bad as we did.
- 10:36Didn't stolen go ahead?
- 10:37Stolen did advance. Yeah.
- 10:39Why? Because you're more interested in heists.
- 10:42It was it was a top to bottom stolen had a more cohesive story
- 10:46was what we kind of decided.
- 10:47I think I like the idea of drive angry more than I enjoy the film. Well,
- 10:51it also was like thoroughly in that three D realm.
- 10:54Oh, yeah. Like an axe flying at the screen.
- 10:57Yeah. Jesus, this is fucking insufferable.
- 10:59I think it's also just like 20 minutes too long to keep my attention.
- 11:03So Peggy Sue got married in the family, man.
- 11:05He like falls asleep and he's like a hot shot.
- 11:08Fuck wakes up with kids and stuff.
- 11:10Yeah. Like some of those high school girls to love that.
- 11:13And yeah, it's sells itself as kind of like a comedy romp.
- 11:16And it's just depressing.
- 11:18Right. And Jeremy Piven is his his like, oh, man.
- 11:21Yeah. The first time Jeremy Piven's just a solid dude
- 11:24instead of just being a shitty bro.
- 11:27Fuck. Yeah.
- 11:28That was a good performance by Jeremy Piven. It was.
- 11:31Then we moved on to City of Angels and Kiss of Death.
- 11:34City of Angels sucks. That's for sure.
- 11:37Oh, three. Our first.
- 11:40Yeah, he he lifts Hope Davis.
- 11:43The bench presses are hope.
- 11:44Yeah, it's his first first appearance as a heel trucks, a guy via the neck.
- 11:49Oh, from a cab.
- 11:51I loved his bedazzled inhaler, though.
- 11:54Yeah, that was fucking great.
- 11:55Yeah, it was definitely his like buffest role.
- 11:59Yeah. Yeah. And he's like cut out tank tops.
- 12:00Yeah. Sexy mother.
- 12:02That was a good role. Yeah, I like that one.
- 12:04We picked right. Yeah.
- 12:05No, that was good. I enjoyed that a lot.
- 12:07I'm looking forward to representing that.
- 12:08Vampires kiss in between worlds.
- 12:10That was a weird week. Weird week for sure.
- 12:13It was one of those ones where I had to watch vampires kiss twice
- 12:16to really appreciate how good it is.
- 12:19Oh, that one's right up there with like
- 12:22raising Arizona for me and just like absurd.
- 12:26Loved it from the get go kind of movies.
- 12:29Vampires Kiss is the one I tried to watch on an airplane,
- 12:31but there were a lot of boobs.
- 12:33So I had to like, I mean, I did watch it all, but I had to shield it a lot.
- 12:39Yeah, that's that's one of those movies that like I
- 12:41I really appreciate how much of it is existing in the zeitgeist for everybody.
- 12:47Like everyone just knows certain bits and pieces of that movie.
- 12:50And like there are other, you know, even if it's just like stills from it.
- 12:53Right. Exactly.
- 12:54It's a very memeable movie, and I think it's really made an impact.
- 12:58Then we went to The Rock and Bangkok Dangerous,
- 13:02the fucking one of the worst movies.
- 13:05Yeah, the Rock's pretty rough.
- 13:08You hate Bangkok Dangerous, too.
- 13:09No, I definitely hate Bangkok.
- 13:11Bangkok Dangerous is bad.
- 13:12It's just boring is the problem.
- 13:14Like it's not bad as much as it just doesn't give you anything.
- 13:19Like it just sucks. Yeah.
- 13:21Oh, yeah. Then Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and The Trust.
- 13:25I loved The Trust.
- 13:28And while I like I'm very worried about talent is a lot of fun.
- 13:32I think I'd rather watch the trust again.
- 13:34I know I'm bearable weight went forward.
- 13:35But yeah. Oh, the trust was the did not go ahead.
- 13:39Elijah Wood, Elijah Wood movie.
- 13:41That one was fine, but I don't.
- 13:44It never really like piqued me while Unbearable Weight
- 13:48at least got me laughing and rolling on a consistent basis.
- 13:53Yeah. Yeah. Unbearable Weight's just a more consistent movie.
- 13:57I mean, it doesn't offer anything to the greater pantheon of Nicolas Cage.
- 14:01Oh, little Nicky.
- 14:02Aside from like good fan service.
- 14:05And we know that Nick Cage smooch is good.
- 14:07And he deserves a fan service movie. That's true.
- 14:09And once you have 100 titles to your name or 100 credits to your name,
- 14:13you deserve to have a movie that just kind of toots your own horn.
- 14:17I love a good self tooting.
- 14:19Man, if I could toot my horn.
- 14:23Yeah. So then it was Joe and Zonda Lee.
- 14:27That's a weird movie.
- 14:28That was a great week.
- 14:29I wish both of them could have gone forward.
- 14:32I understand that obviously Zonda sucks a lot.
- 14:37But I just want more people to see it.
- 14:40Also, it's just watch that.
- 14:42I'm upset that movie is not memed more.
- 14:45It's so weird him with the paint, like just splashing it all over his face. Yeah.
- 14:50And just judge Reinhold's like slow turn to the camera.
- 14:53Oh, man. Am I the cuck?
- 14:58All right. Go watch Zonda Lee.
- 15:00Yeah. Also, where we where we learn the proper pronunciation of Kukul.
- 15:03No, we didn't.
- 15:05Apparently across the board, we did not.
- 15:07And we had a Mandy and Prisoners of the Ghostland.
- 15:10That was a great week.
- 15:12Mandy was a terrific.
- 15:13I love Mandy.
- 15:14This is this is maybe one of my only like regret ones.
- 15:18I think Mandy is a great movie and I'm excited to watch it again
- 15:20and have like fresh eyes on it.
- 15:22But like, it's so gross to watch that it like doesn't bring me joy.
- 15:27And Prisoners of the Ghostland was fucking ridiculous.
- 15:30And it brought me constant joy. Yeah.
- 15:33Samurai Town was super weird. Yeah.
- 15:35Like everything about prisoners was odd.
- 15:39Yeah. The same.
- 15:40The color palette was jarring.
- 15:44But I'm saying that as a compliment, I guess.
- 15:47It really upset me.
- 15:49Go about it. Go about it.
- 15:53That movie fucking rules.
- 15:54Watch that movie. That's a weird one.
- 15:56I just I loved I loved.
- 15:58I mean, it's terrible.
- 15:59Start to finish everything about it.
- 16:01It's weird hour long intro, which just leads into the hyper violence.
- 16:06Yeah, I mean, they're both great.
- 16:07But that is one of my only like I'm a little salty
- 16:10that it couldn't have been both of them.
- 16:12Yeah. Then we had National Treasure and Primal.
- 16:15Mm hmm.
- 16:16This is one of the ones that I had to choose on.
- 16:18We had we had Peter made Nick and I leave our knives at the door for this one.
- 16:22Yeah, because we all know who would win in a knife fight.
- 16:25Yeah, not me. Peter.
- 16:27Why? Because he has all the knives now.
- 16:29Oh, yeah, right. Yeah, I have to. You have none.
- 16:33Man, I still hold that in this matchup, my time is gold.
- 16:39And the fact that I could spend a half an hour less watching Primal
- 16:44and just enjoy a shitty movie versus a two hour
- 16:49Brockheimer kind of just mid movie.
- 16:53I just think Nick K just so much better.
- 16:56So forgettable in Primal.
- 16:59Aside from marching down a staircase,
- 17:03we're going to get into a second fight again.
- 17:05Oh, see. So it's not even until the second one that I give a shit about that.
- 17:09I love him in National Treasure one. I think he's I think he's great. Yeah.
- 17:13It's a fine movie, but I don't have two hours for that.
- 17:17He's just such a shitty person on top of everything else in Primal.
- 17:22I'm still going to watch that movie periodically and talk to Sean about it.
- 17:26Well, you're going to make Sean watch it occasionally, too. Yeah.
- 17:28So I'm just going to slip it in primal.
- 17:32And I'll put the movie on to
- 17:34grow. Then we went to the Valley Girl
- 17:38and Weatherman matchup with Shay as our guest.
- 17:41I watched Weatherman like when it first came out on DVD
- 17:45and I remembered it being great.
- 17:46And then I watched it almost 20 years later.
- 17:49And it's still great. Yeah. I love that movie.
- 17:52I was about to get upset.
- 17:53No, the weatherman was a terrific film. He gets chicken nuggets thrown at him.
- 17:58I'm sad, though, because Valley Girl was ridiculous,
- 18:02like such a goofy snapshot of the 80s kind of a movie.
- 18:07Yeah. And I really enjoyed that.
- 18:09And the music was really good, too.
- 18:11It had a great soundtrack and it was a terrific 80s teen movie.
- 18:16And it was Windtalkers and bringing out the dead.
- 18:20That was a intense episode.
- 18:21That was a lot. And just fucking it was on.
- 18:24Woo makes shorter films. Yeah.
- 18:26You you don't have that much to say.
- 18:29I really like bringing out the dead.
- 18:31Absolutely terrific movie.
- 18:32Windtalkers was good.
- 18:33That was also the first time I'd seen a war movie in a while, too.
- 18:37The definite easy choice was bringing out the dead and the correct choice.
- 18:42The next episode that we ran into was where I lost my shit
- 18:45because it was mom and dad versus next.
- 18:47It's weird listening to myself, like absolutely busting up laughing.
- 18:55Jessica Biel exploding is the funniest thing ever.
- 18:59It is. And they show it so many times.
- 19:02And it comes out of nowhere.
- 19:03She just explodes.
- 19:05I mean, she's tied to a chair of C4, but you don't expect her to actually explode.
- 19:09That one was amazing, though. I loved it.
- 19:11I hate that movie so much. So terrible.
- 19:13But that episode is great.
- 19:15And we had Conair and rage with my brother.
- 19:19Oh, yeah. Your brother was in rage.
- 19:21Yeah, exactly. He was in rage.
- 19:22We were recording with us. Yes.
- 19:26Conair easily my favorite of the action
- 19:29like the main action trilogy of cage films.
- 19:32I think I have to agree with that.
- 19:33Yeah. Like Moonstruck and Honeymoon in Vegas.
- 19:36Good match up.
- 19:37Honeymoon in Vegas is such a weird film where I don't like anybody.
- 19:42It is a nice to, you know, romantic comedy kind of movies
- 19:47about similar infidelity themes and stuff.
- 19:50You know, it was a good time. Share.
- 19:52Share is great. Share.
- 19:53Yeah, sure was great.
- 19:55Got to find out. I make a decent share.
- 19:57People in the Seattle area.
- 19:58Cif is going to be showing Moonstruck in their theaters in October.
- 20:03I think it's like late October. So there you go.
- 20:05I could be wrong about that. Look at the CIF website.
- 20:08I don't know if you're not in Seattle. Cool.
- 20:10Thanks for listening.
- 20:11Oh, also to our Richmond listeners, I don't know if this happened yet,
- 20:14but the bird is doing a cage match for movie Nick Cage series.
- 20:20Not related. Not related to us.
- 20:21They're just calling it the same thing. Yeah.
- 20:23Punks. Yeah. Ding, dong.
- 20:25Yeah. So I don't know.
- 20:26Look out there. There's there's Nicholas Cage movies.
- 20:29People love Nicholas Cage wherever you're at.
- 20:31Then we had Lord of War and Captain Kareli's Mandolin,
- 20:34which was one of the weirder.
- 20:36I was expecting that movie to be so much worse considering how much like
- 20:39flak it gets like out there.
- 20:42But it's a fine. It's a fine little film.
- 20:45Yeah, it's fine.
- 20:46It's exactly what I would expect to watch on like a Sunday afternoon on network TV.
- 20:51I don't think Lord of War is getting a lot of Sunday afternoon play.
- 20:54I also thought I really expected Lord of War to be better, too.
- 20:57Yeah, that's kind of my my thinking, too.
- 21:00It really kind of it's all downhill after the opening sequence of the bullet
- 21:04going through its lifecycle.
- 21:07And some of the credits were your favorite part.
- 21:10Open credits.
- 21:11I mean, that movie is good for its time period in the cage geography.
- 21:16Yeah, it just didn't have a lot to stand up against.
- 21:19It was probably his biggest movie with a couple of years on either side of it.
- 21:23I just don't think that movie had anything to say in the end.
- 21:25No, there was no.
- 21:27Apparently enough that they think they're going to do the sequel.
- 21:28But then we had Wild at Heart and Knowing with Daryl.
- 21:33Terrific. Loved Wild at Heart.
- 21:35Yeah, such a fucking.
- 21:36We got to see that in a SIF event.
- 21:38Yeah, that was a really fun recording, too.
- 21:40I had a blast with that one.
- 21:41Yeah. Thanks, Daryl.
- 21:43You're a mensch. Yeah.
- 21:44Oh, and we are in spider season now.
- 21:46So, you know, enjoy that.
- 21:48Yeah. And we were cocky the other day and we were like,
- 21:49a good thing we're done with spider season.
- 21:51Well, the rain started early.
- 21:52Then I caught one right in the face in the morning.
- 21:54Yeah. Fuck. Never let your guard down.
- 21:56Still in the beginnings.
- 21:57You know. All right.
- 21:58This is in we're in the last round through the bracket here.
- 22:00This is our last four episodes was Gone in 60 Seconds
- 22:02and Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance.
- 22:04I like how Ghost Rider gets its redemption with its unhinged sequel.
- 22:09It is very bad shit.
- 22:11I love it.
- 22:12I wish there was a little more of an attempt to connect to the two movies.
- 22:17I mean, these are two definite standalones.
- 22:19The only thing that's consistent is Nicholas Cage. Yeah.
- 22:22It's it's a complete performance.
- 22:24It's not consistent.
- 22:25No, it's a complete reboot.
- 22:27And I like the idea that he's not like peak superhero guy anymore.
- 22:31Like he never takes his jacket off.
- 22:32He's a bitch, lovey, but his power comes from like hell.
- 22:36Hell. It's true.
- 22:38All right. Then it was a matchstick man in guarding tests.
- 22:41Two weird movies.
- 22:42Yeah. I'm a little surprised that you guys went with the guarding tests victory.
- 22:47It makes sense.
- 22:48But I feel like it was such a slow paced movie
- 22:52that really didn't have a ton to do.
- 22:54At least it's sold on the relationship between him and Tess.
- 22:59Yeah.
- 22:59And I really like their performances together.
- 23:03The ending is where it loses me.
- 23:04Whereas with matchstick men, I don't
- 23:08I don't like the father daughter relationship.
- 23:10It made me uncomfortable.
- 23:11Yeah.
- 23:12You know, it made me very uncomfortable for a long time.
- 23:15Well, because like from the get go, I'm like, you're clearly an adult woman.
- 23:20So you're conning this guy and it's just it's uncomfortable.
- 23:23I guess I just don't like seeing people with disabilities
- 23:26taking advantage of so strongly.
- 23:28Yeah, that's that's kind of weird.
- 23:30Use that.
- 23:31Don't like I'm usually very pro take advantage of people, but
- 23:36in this situation, I'm like, oh, come on.
- 23:39Come on, Sam Rockwell.
- 23:40Good move. Real dick move.
- 23:43Oh, yeah. And then it was bad lieutenant port of call New Orleans and eight millimeter.
- 23:47I am also a little surprised that one of our hottest weeks
- 23:51that we went with the snuff film.
- 23:53Yeah, I'm a little surprised by it.
- 23:54It's a good movie.
- 23:55It's a really good movie.
- 23:56I thought about it more after recording that one.
- 23:59And I think I agree with you.
- 24:01I just I really liked the the zany fucking performance of Bad Lieutenant
- 24:05a little bit more.
- 24:06But the movie eight millimeter is a better.
- 24:08I think Bad Lieutenant could have been better if it built
- 24:12to the pure insanity of his drug addled mind.
- 24:15It just goes from I'm I'm a I'm a shitty cop.
- 24:19I'm a shitty cop to just insanity.
- 24:22There's no bill to it.
- 24:23And it's not a great film.
- 24:24I think if the film had been built so that everybody else
- 24:28and everything else about the movie was super straight, like crime drama,
- 24:35get Val Kilmer to like pull it back a little bit, do these little things
- 24:39and make everybody super serious and then let Nicholas Cage
- 24:43take it even up one more notch. Yeah.
- 24:46And have some kind of like
- 24:49Chuck's visual.
- 24:50No, just like a visual distinction in all of the like weird
- 24:54like a guano visions and things like that.
- 24:56Did love a guano vision. More a guano.
- 24:57Yeah. But like have Nicholas Cage in his own movie, essentially.
- 25:03Yeah. OK.
- 25:04Existing in that world.
- 25:05If they had done that, maybe I would have to see it.
- 25:09I mean, we're still talking about Werner Werner Herzog.
- 25:12But but I still love eight millimeter.
- 25:14Eight millimeter was terrific.
- 25:15It's a good movie.
- 25:16And it's one of those things where what's the director?
- 25:20Dude, nipples on the nipples on the bat.
- 25:22So Joel Schumacher, where his weird kind of unhinged
- 25:26like cinematography really lends itself to the uncomfortableness of the film.
- 25:31Like, I see why he was the name he was, because as a child of the late 90s,
- 25:36all I know knew him from was the worst Batman films,
- 25:41not the worst Batman film.
- 25:42That's still The Dark Knight Rises.
- 25:45True. Yeah, we did get to watch a little bit of Batman and Robin
- 25:49at the bar the other day. Yeah.
- 25:50And it was good. It was a lot of fun.
- 25:52I used to meet you.
- 25:53I got to read all the Bane lines, which were just girl.
- 25:58It will be very painful for you.
- 26:01Explosions.
- 26:05And then we wrapped up our season with Willy's Wonderland and Snake Eyes.
- 26:08The best way to end this was with Willy's Wonderland.
- 26:12Yeah, that's a popcorn finale for sure.
- 26:14Definitely. Snake Eyes is fine.
- 26:16Snake Eyes is fine.
- 26:17It was an enjoyable movie.
- 26:20It doesn't hold up strongly in rewatches,
- 26:24just because you know everything that's going to happen.
- 26:26Well, 30 minutes into the movie, you also know everything
- 26:28that's going to happen 30 minutes of the movie the first time you watch it,
- 26:31because they tell you who the bad guy is. Yeah.
- 26:33So it's hard to watch like an additional three and a half hours of that movie.
- 26:38Yeah. Knowing all the conceits.
- 26:40Yeah. But Willy's Wonderland, Nicholas Cage doesn't say anything.
- 26:44And he still feels the show is going to happen.
- 26:46You don't even need a conceit. Yeah, it's great.
- 26:49So there's kids that are there providing dialogue that don't matter.
- 26:52Punch soda. Regardless, he's going to play pinball.
- 26:56And if you say that word, I refuse to say the second word.
- 27:01So that was season one done.
- 27:06That's our cover.
- 27:07Brief recap as as we only know how to do very long.
- 27:12I enjoyed most of this.
- 27:15There's a good 60 percent of it. I liked. Yeah.
- 27:17OK, I'm at the process like hanging out together.
- 27:21Yeah, that's in the part that I didn't like.
- 27:24I think we kind of covered it.
- 27:25But do you think there was any like really big surprise or miss
- 27:29out of season one?
- 27:30The big surprise for me was Rick Rock West. Like, yeah.
- 27:33A movie I've never heard of.
- 27:34And it's one of my favorite films now.
- 27:38That was a real quality win.
- 27:40Boy, it's hard to think about like a loser that I wish could have gone forward.
- 27:44I mean, like aside from just saying Primal Primal. Right.
- 27:46But boy, there were some real, real good movies
- 27:51that just didn't get a chance. Yeah. Unfortunately.
- 27:54Yeah. And we've also had a really good year of movies that didn't make the bracket to.
- 27:58Yeah. This year alone, he's had four movies already come out.
- 28:03Yeah. It's got two more on the way.
- 28:05Yeah, it's crazy. That's a lot of Nick Cage movies.
- 28:07That's interesting.
- 28:08Like what of the movies that have come out would you have liked to see on this list
- 28:11that you think could probably go the distance?
- 28:13OK, so we've seen the old way.
- 28:16Old way retirement plan and sympathy for the devil for the devil.
- 28:20We're going to watch butchers crossing and dream scenario scenario. Yeah.
- 28:25Simply for the devil.
- 28:26I would would I would probably put forward in a lot of matchups.
- 28:30That was a really fun movie. I enjoyed it a lot.
- 28:33It seems like if you could have swapped out like a dog eat dog or something
- 28:36with that, that would have been a good fit.
- 28:38Done well. Renfield's a lot of fun.
- 28:41I put that probably.
- 28:42I mean, Renfield and retirement plan both fit that kind of like fun,
- 28:47just comedy, action, comedy or action like comedy, horror.
- 28:51They're just fun, enjoyable movies.
- 28:53And honestly, that's great.
- 28:55I love to have those and they're perfectly timed.
- 28:58They don't take up your whole weekend.
- 29:01They're not rewatching the Lord of the Rings or anything. Right.
- 29:04And then the old way is just bad.
- 29:08It does have Clinton Howard going,
- 29:11oh, my balls.
- 29:13We love you, Clint Howard.
- 29:14Come hang out with us. Be on our podcast.
- 29:16Yeah. Tell us about Nick Cage.
- 29:18Or just tell us about your life as Clint Howard or your balls.
- 29:21I don't know.
- 29:22On that note, though, like in terms of guests, I think for me,
- 29:25I feel like guests really bring a really fun element to this entire thing.
- 29:29Yeah. And I'm really pleased with everybody that we had on.
- 29:31And I'm excited that in season two, we're going to have a huge amount of guests
- 29:36on basically every episode.
- 29:39A huge amount of guests, a lot of new guests and a lot of returning guests.
- 29:42Yeah. So it's going to be a lot of fun.
- 29:43I think we're going to get some some good new takes
- 29:46for the second trip around the bracket as we go from 32 to 16 to the sweet 16.
- 29:51Get sued for that. For what? Sweet 16 now.
- 29:54We could call it the slick 16 slick 16.
- 29:57Yeah. What's the elite? The slicks teen.
- 30:01God, it sounds gross.
- 30:03It feels gross in my mouth.
- 30:05It feels oily. I don't like it.
- 30:07Yeah. Yeah. So our round of slicks teen.
- 30:10Mm hmm. Oh, we are going to we're embracing that.
- 30:14What about the elite eight? How do we turn that gross?
- 30:17Well, I don't know. We'll get there when we get there.
- 30:18We'll get there when we get there.
- 30:19We can yuck a lot of yums.
- 30:22How is this like affected your life outside of this podcast?
- 30:25Because this is a large committed thing we've done at my job.
- 30:30I am the Nick Cage guy now.
- 30:32Yeah. My big change is just thinking about how much time in a week
- 30:36I spend working on the posters, working on editing, doing the recordings,
- 30:40watching the next movies coming up.
- 30:42And, you know, I think we said it on our episode with Darryl,
- 30:45but watching any movie that doesn't have Nick Cage in it,
- 30:48I'm always like something feels off.
- 30:50And it's like, yeah, there's a missing element.
- 30:51There's a missing element. And it's those nasal labial folds.
- 30:54God, I love his nasal labial folds.
- 30:56Oh, what is it? I just saw Horn before I came here.
- 30:59And he's like, do you still think Nick Cage is a good actor?
- 31:02I mean, he's the best actor.
- 31:03He's like, I still don't buy it.
- 31:04I'm like, watch 64 of his films in 14 months and then tell me he's not great.
- 31:09Nick, how's it impacted you?
- 31:12I have homework at this point.
- 31:15Yeah, that's fair.
- 31:16I was never actually like accused of having terrific taste in movies and life.
- 31:22So this it's right up my alley.
- 31:24And we now are the proud owners of a poster that Peter got us
- 31:29to commemorate the end of our season of all of his amazing Photoshop work.
- 31:34Yeah. Thank you, Peter, for doing that.
- 31:36You're welcome. That was not really something we discussed going into this.
- 31:39It's kind of just a thing you we like we discussed doing the face off one.
- 31:43And then you just kind of ran with it.
- 31:45Yeah, it just ended up being a thing that I did for every episode.
- 31:47And they're all amazing, especially once you realize people
- 31:52actually look and listen to us. Yeah.
- 31:55Then you're the amount of time you spent on it definitely went up.
- 31:59The effort went up. Yeah.
- 32:01My favorite part was always finding the fonts for close fonts to. Yeah.
- 32:04You crush it on the nerd. Yeah, dude.
- 32:09Hey, typography is hot. Yeah.
- 32:11I'm still looking forward to seeing the finished kickass one of the font.
- 32:14Oh, it's good. It looks good.
- 32:16It's hard to read the words cage match because they block a lot of it.
- 32:18But could be a lot of things underneath our bodies.
- 32:24Yeah. So anything that you guys are really looking forward to for season two or?
- 32:28No, part of the change up for season two is Nick and I are going to
- 32:32actually watch these movies together.
- 32:33Yeah, which we've had limited opportunity, mostly in our like bonus
- 32:37episodes to be able to do this.
- 32:39So we're going to actually get to it like experiences in a more
- 32:41like social enjoyable way. Yeah.
- 32:44Which I think will add some new light to ways of interacting with and enjoying
- 32:48these films. Yeah. And we're going to have like Nick said,
- 32:50we're going to have a lot of fresh blood in terms of guests.
- 32:52So they're going to bring some new energy and new outlooks and opinions on
- 32:56on all these things that we have now spent five days, one hour and 49 minutes.
- 33:00That's a good start.
- 33:01We're going to have to explain this to our creator one day.
- 33:04Are you talking about me? Yes.
- 33:07I understand you're forgiven.
- 33:10And just thank you to everyone who listens.
- 33:12I mean, we'd still probably be doing this if you weren't there.
- 33:14Our lives aren't that interesting outside of this.
- 33:16But it does make a difference.
- 33:17Like if we if we were having lower numbers or people weren't
- 33:20giving us positive feedback and saying that they actually enjoy this, like,
- 33:24I don't know that we would have tried as hard.
- 33:26We would definitely be more inebriated on a regular basis.
- 33:30Yeah. Instead of just a semi regular basis.
- 33:32Yeah. And semi inebriated.
- 33:34And thank you to all of our all of our patrons.
- 33:36Exactly. Our Sparkle buddies, Josh, Sean, Josie, Rico, Matt and Adam
- 33:40and our cage dancers, Ira, John, Freeman and Lance.
- 33:44We really do appreciate that.
- 33:45If you guys want to support us at all, it's patreon.com slash cage match.
- 33:49Also, for people who aren't patrons yet, Meredith, I know you got a promotion.
- 33:53Fucking throw five dollars at us.
- 33:55We are going to get better equipment.
- 33:56So that's a help.
- 33:57The judge says you have to pay me five dollars a month.
- 33:59Yeah, we're just five dollars short of better equipment, Meredith.
- 34:03Yeah, you just throw in five dollars more.
- 34:06Meredith. Yeah, thank you all.
- 34:09And if you want to interact with us and post comments down below the folder,
- 34:13whatever the fuck Nick says, you can find Instagram at cage
- 34:17underscore match underscore pod or read it at cage match pod.
- 34:21Those are the places you can find us.
- 34:22Please like and subscribe and enjoy season two.
- 34:25I hope it's as fun as we think it's going to be.
- 34:28I don't. I hope to drive you all away.
- 34:32Good. We'll see who wins.
- 34:34Primal. Bye bye.
- 34:46Oh, I now I'll save that for when we recap
- 34:49when we do it again, because I have new theories on why they did that.
- 34:54Oh, that's good audio. Thanks for sharing that. Excellent.
- 34:56I mean, Peter can cut that.
- 34:58I was thinking about this for sure.
- 35:00I was thinking about that in the shower this morning.
- 35:02And I'm like, oh, this will be interesting.
- 35:04Ah, penis swap technology.
- 35:05Like I figured out why the government would do.
- 35:06I also think about things Peter can cut while I'm in the shower.
- 35:12You should probably edit that.
- 35:13Take a second run at that.
- 35:14No, I'm going to slam that together in the worst way.
- 35:17Oh, yeah. Yeah, baby.
