- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome back to She's on the Money. Is
- 1:01Speaker 2: it just me or do fashion trends seem to be
- 1:03Speaker 2: moving at warp speed At the moment you're about to
- 1:07Speaker 2: hit ad takat and then suddenly it's yesterday's news. Once
- 1:10Speaker 2: upon a time, designers released new collections just a couple
- 1:13Speaker 2: of times a year, and now it really feels like
- 1:16Speaker 2: brands are dropping a new collection probably every two weeks.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I'm Victoria Devine and in today's special Saturday episode, we're
- 1:24Speaker 2: going to chat about the whirlwind that is micro trend culture.
- 1:27Speaker 2: How did we end up caught in this cycle of
- 1:30Speaker 2: overconsumption and what does it mean for our finances, our
- 1:33Speaker 2: mental health, and our planet. First off, let's talk about
- 1:37Speaker 2: what micro trends actually are. In the past, fashion trends
- 1:42Speaker 2: had time to breathe think summer and winter collections, giving
- 1:46Speaker 2: you months to enjoy your favorite looks. But with the
- 1:50Speaker 2: rise of social media, trends of now a shelf life
- 1:53Speaker 2: of weeks, sometimes even days. TikTok is the epicenter of
- 1:58Speaker 2: this micro trend explosion. Ends catch fire faster than you
- 2:02Speaker 2: can scroll. Creators and influencers alikea really quick to share
- 2:06Speaker 2: their takes, and before you know it, the trend is everywhere.
- 2:10Speaker 2: The hashtag get ready with me videos and those massive
- 2:13Speaker 2: clothing hauls just turn up the pressure. Very demure and
- 2:18Speaker 2: fast fashion is right there, ready to keep pace. They've
- 2:21Speaker 2: perfected their process so well that they can now turn
- 2:24Speaker 2: a runway trend into something you can buy in just
- 2:27Speaker 2: two weeks. No wonder, we're all stuck in this endless
- 2:31Speaker 2: cycle of trying to keep up. But here's the thing, guys,
- 2:35Speaker 2: This constant churn of trends isn't just exhausting, it's also harmful. First,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and arguably most important to someone like me, are the
- 2:43Speaker 2: financial impacts. The rapid pace of micro trends pressures us
- 2:48Speaker 2: to keep buying more often, leading to impulse purchases that
- 2:51Speaker 2: we never even get a chance to wear. According to
- 2:54Speaker 2: money Smart, Australians have an estimated seven point six billion
- 2:59Speaker 2: dollars worth of unused clothing sitting in their wardrobes. That's right,
- 3:04Speaker 2: billions of dollars spent on items that are collecting dust,
- 3:08Speaker 2: much of it driven by the need to keep up
- 3:10Speaker 2: with fast fashion trends. What's worse is if we do
- 3:13Speaker 2: wear them. The average consumer only wears clothes seven times
- 3:18Speaker 2: before throwing them out. And let's not forget the debt
- 3:21Speaker 2: that can accumulate. A study by Credit Comer found that
- 3:25Speaker 2: nearly forty percent of millennials overspend to keep up with
- 3:29Speaker 2: their friends. What starts as a harmless shopping spree can
- 3:33Speaker 2: quickly become a financial burden, affecting your ability to save,
- 3:37Speaker 2: invest and even just cover the essentials. All this pressure
- 3:41Speaker 2: to stay current can have a serious impact on your
- 3:44Speaker 2: financial wellbeing. But that's not the only harm that we're
- 3:48Speaker 2: currently dealing with here. Stick around, because after the break
- 3:51Speaker 2: we're going to uncover the environmental toll of fast fashion
- 3:55Speaker 2: and spoiler, it's a big one. And my friends, we
- 4:02Speaker 2: are back on this very exciting Saturday. So we've already
- 4:06Speaker 2: covered how micro trends can wreak havoc on your finances,
- 4:09Speaker 2: but what about the planet. Fast fashion is notorious for
- 4:13Speaker 2: its environmental footprint. The industry is responsible for ten percent
- 4:17Speaker 2: of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and
- 4:20Speaker 2: maritime shipping combined, and with Australians discarding an average of
- 4:25Speaker 2: twenty three kilograms of clothing per person each year, we're
- 4:29Speaker 2: contributing to a growing landfill crisis. This waste doesn't just disappear,
- 4:34Speaker 2: it contributes to the growing problem of landfill, overfill and
- 4:38Speaker 2: environmental degradation. So while those trend pieces might be fun
- 4:42Speaker 2: for a season, their environmental impact lasts so much longer. Finally,
- 4:48Speaker 2: let's talk about the big elephant in the room. Let's
- 4:50Speaker 2: talk about the mental toll. The constant barrage of new
- 4:54Speaker 2: trends can create a massive sense of inadequacy and anxiety.
- 4:58Speaker 2: We've all been there, scrolling through ten TikTok or Instagram,
- 5:01Speaker 2: seeing influences flauned the latest must have item and suddenly
- 5:04Speaker 2: feeling like what we have just isn't good enough. This
- 5:07Speaker 2: cycle of comparison can be mentally exhausting. According to a
- 5:12Speaker 2: study by the University of British Columbia, frequent social media
- 5:16Speaker 2: use is linked to increased anxiety and depression, partly due
- 5:19Speaker 2: to the pressure to keep up with online transit appearances.
- 5:23Speaker 2: This is especially true for younger audiences, who are still
- 5:26Speaker 2: developing their sense of self worth and can be heavily
- 5:29Speaker 2: influenced by what they see online. The constant need to
- 5:32Speaker 2: stay on trend can lead to a never ending loop
- 5:35Speaker 2: of comparison, dissatisfaction, and anxiety, affecting not just your mental
- 5:39Speaker 2: health but your overall quality of life. So what can
- 5:43Speaker 2: we actually do about this? The good news is there
- 5:46Speaker 2: are plenty of ways to embrace fashion more mindfully. For starters,
- 5:50Speaker 2: let's talk about thrifting and secondhand shopping. It's not just sustainable,
- 5:54Speaker 2: it's also a treasure hunt for unique pieces that won't
- 5:57Speaker 2: be outdated next week. And when I've got a big
- 6:00Speaker 2: event coming up that can't find something secondhand, I love
- 6:04Speaker 2: turning to rental services. You can snag a designer piece
- 6:07Speaker 2: for a fraction of the price and still look a
- 6:10Speaker 2: million bucks. When you are buying new, try invest in timeless,
- 6:14Speaker 2: high quality items that will be your go tos for years,
- 6:18Speaker 2: not just one season. And hey, TikTok isn't just about
- 6:21Speaker 2: fast fashion. There are so many creators out there using
- 6:25Speaker 2: their platform to promote sustainability and mindful consumption. There's an
- 6:29Speaker 2: emerging trend at the moment that's flipping the script on
- 6:31Speaker 2: micro trends and over consumption, and they're calling it under
- 6:34Speaker 2: Consumption Core. It's all about embracing minimalism and making conscious
- 6:39Speaker 2: choices about what we bring into our lives instead of
- 6:42Speaker 2: chasing every new trend. People are starting to prioritize quality
- 6:46Speaker 2: over quantity, and they're focusing on items that truly add
- 6:50Speaker 2: value to their lives and their wardrobes. Under consumption coll
- 6:54Speaker 2: isn't just about buying less. It's about being intentional with
- 6:58Speaker 2: your purchases. Think it of as like an anti hall
- 7:01Speaker 2: instead of filling your cart with fast fashion. It's about
- 7:04Speaker 2: choosing one or two really well made pieces, timeless pieces
- 7:07Speaker 2: that you're actually going to wear. It's about repairing, reusing,
- 7:11Speaker 2: and repurposing what you already own, essentially getting more life
- 7:15Speaker 2: out of your clothes. This trend is gaining traction and
- 7:18Speaker 2: I am here for it, especially among those who are
- 7:22Speaker 2: tired of the constant cycle of buying, discarding and repeating.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And while under consumption, core is in reality closer to
- 7:29Speaker 2: normal consumption. It's a really refreshing shift in the content
- 7:33Speaker 2: that we see online. This moves towards a more sustainable
- 7:37Speaker 2: and mindful approach to fashion, not only reducing our environmental footprint,
- 7:41Speaker 2: but also helping us to reconnect with what truly matters. Plus,
- 7:45Speaker 2: by opting for fewer, higher quality items, you might even
- 7:48Speaker 2: find that your wardrobe feels more cohesive and personal like
- 7:51Speaker 2: it actually reflects your style, not just the latest trend.
- 7:55Speaker 2: So these are the accounts you want to follow, the
- 7:58Speaker 2: ones who encourage you to rewar outfits, share clothing with friends,
- 8:02Speaker 2: or even upcycle old pieces into something new. My challenge
- 8:06Speaker 2: for you this week is this, next time you see
- 8:09Speaker 2: a micro trend blowing up on TikTok, take a step
- 8:12Speaker 2: back and actually ask yourself do I need this or
- 8:15Speaker 2: is this just the hype talking? And remember fashion should
- 8:19Speaker 2: be fun, but it doesn't need to come at such
- 8:22Speaker 2: a high cost to our wallet, our planet, or even
- 8:24Speaker 2: our peace of mind. Next time, you're tempted by the
- 8:27Speaker 2: latest trend, think twice about whether it's worth the long
- 8:31Speaker 2: term impact. Let's all aim for a wardrobe that not
- 8:34Speaker 2: only looks good, but feels good in every sense of
- 8:37Speaker 2: the word. Thanks for tuning in today, my friends. I
- 8:40Speaker 2: hope this conversation inspires you to take a more mindful
- 8:43Speaker 2: approach to your wardrobe. Now I'm gonna go vintage shopping
- 8:46Speaker 2: and find something unique to wear to my friend's birthday.
