- 0:00I've got this dream, Jason.
- 0:01I've got this dream where I want to get a horse,
- 0:06and I want to get a slice of land,
- 0:09and I want to get up on that horse,
- 0:11I want to get on that saddle,
- 0:13and I want to ride,
- 0:14and I want to herd up some cattle,
- 0:17and I want to smoke some Marlboro cigarettes.
- 0:22And I would like you to join me, Jason,
- 0:26as my friend, my cowboy friend,
- 0:29but I want you 40 acres away
- 0:32with some chaw in your mouth,
- 0:35some tobacco in your mouth.
- 0:36Maybe we'll get together and drive the cattle
- 0:40down the road,
- 0:41but I want my land.
- 0:44I want a nice little woman there with me
- 0:47and some kids,
- 0:47some sheep.
- 0:50I want it.
- 0:52It's the American dream.
- 0:53And so, I mean, I'm here today to ask you,
- 0:56will you join me, my friend?
- 0:58This is the way.
- 1:01Oh, yeah.
- 1:04So, today we're going to talk about
- 1:08the myth of the Marlboro Man,
- 1:11which is closely associated
- 1:13to the myth of the lone wolf,
- 1:15something we've definitely talked about before.
- 1:18but this particular romantic ideation,
- 1:22I think,
- 1:24here in the West,
- 1:25that still to this day,
- 1:28persists in definitions and imagery of masculinity
- 1:33and what men are,
- 1:35and who we should be,
- 1:36and even what a lot of men aspire to be.
- 1:42I don't know if you know this about my family, Jason,
- 1:45but my,
- 1:46I know you know my family's been in the fashion industry
- 1:48for many decades,
- 1:49but one of the areas that my family works in
- 1:52is in the Western culture.
- 1:53So, my dad's company has made leather products
- 1:57for brands like Wrangler and Ariat,
- 2:02and so I've been around,
- 2:03I've been around rodeos as a child
- 2:08and Western shows,
- 2:10and this is,
- 2:12this is a huge part of America,
- 2:14an American landscape.
- 2:15Still to this day,
- 2:17it's like,
- 2:17it shouldn't be that surprising,
- 2:18but really,
- 2:19all the areas outside of a city
- 2:21are rural zones
- 2:22where a lot of people live,
- 2:24not still live,
- 2:25they live in this Western way.
- 2:27they have cattle,
- 2:27they have horses,
- 2:28they have ranches.
- 2:30I mean,
- 2:30certainly there's a ton of that around me
- 2:31here in Oregon and Colorado,
- 2:33there's still a lot of that there
- 2:34in the rangelands.
- 2:36And,
- 2:38you know,
- 2:38as a healthcare provider
- 2:39and a men's coach,
- 2:40I work with a lot of folks
- 2:42that live in the country
- 2:45and live in that lifestyle,
- 2:46and there is a kind of romanticism to it
- 2:49when they come in
- 2:49and they tell me,
- 2:50you know,
- 2:51they're eating off the garden
- 2:54and they have cows that they milk
- 2:56and they work hard
- 2:58and,
- 2:58you know,
- 3:00these are folks
- 3:01that are really connected
- 3:02to the earth
- 3:03in a lot of ways.
- 3:04And,
- 3:05they live close,
- 3:10close to kind of an older way of being.
- 3:13And,
- 3:13and with that,
- 3:14interesting,
- 3:15there's a culture around
- 3:17things not changing.
- 3:19You know,
- 3:20let's keep things the way they have been.
- 3:23So,
- 3:24when culture really moves quickly,
- 3:26as it has in the last 60 years,
- 3:28you know,
- 3:29with,
- 3:29with the equivocation of,
- 3:32of gay rights
- 3:33and trans rights
- 3:34and marriage
- 3:35and so on and so forth,
- 3:36these things are really
- 3:37frightening in some ways
- 3:39to this culture
- 3:40that's
- 3:41lived close to the land.
- 3:43And,
- 3:44yet,
- 3:45you know,
- 3:46when I work with men
- 3:47from that culture
- 3:48who have
- 3:49crises going on
- 3:52around their health,
- 3:53that,
- 3:55that,
- 3:55that culture doesn't really support them
- 3:58emotionally.
- 3:59And,
- 4:00there's a sense of,
- 4:01well,
- 4:02let's get you on drugs
- 4:04or let's get you
- 4:05something that can
- 4:06keep you going
- 4:07because a real man,
- 4:09a real man
- 4:10doesn't feel.
- 4:12a real man
- 4:13doesn't need to talk
- 4:14about his feelings,
- 4:15a real man
- 4:16just fucking works.
- 4:17He puts it down,
- 4:18he shows up at 2 a.m.
- 4:20to the job site,
- 4:21you know,
- 4:23gets the logging machines
- 4:25up and running
- 4:26and starts pulling down timber.
- 4:28You know,
- 4:29and I'm not making this up.
- 4:30This is,
- 4:31this is something
- 4:32that I hear often.
- 4:33There's a lot of timber
- 4:34in Oregon.
- 4:34It's one of the big
- 4:35timber,
- 4:36timber places
- 4:37on the planet.
- 4:37We produce a lot of
- 4:39Doug fir lumber
- 4:40for the world.
- 4:41And,
- 4:43and,
- 4:45and these men
- 4:46are suffering
- 4:47in some ways,
- 4:48Jason,
- 4:48I think more than
- 4:49most men
- 4:50you and I work with
- 4:51because the culture
- 4:53is like,
- 4:53shut your fucking mouth
- 4:56and get to work
- 4:57and,
- 4:58uh,
- 4:59talk about loneliness,
- 5:00talk about the lone wolf,
- 5:01talk about
- 5:02your latest statistic
- 5:03that you published recently.
- 5:05Uh,
- 5:0680% of suicides
- 5:07are men.
- 5:07Um,
- 5:09so,
- 5:09let's get into
- 5:11the Marlboro Man
- 5:12and what,
- 5:12what's really going on there
- 5:14and what that romanticism
- 5:16is really covering up.
- 5:17Yeah,
- 5:19it's a,
- 5:20it's an interesting,
- 5:20interesting intersection,
- 5:21right,
- 5:22of the man box
- 5:23and masculinity
- 5:24and particularly Western
- 5:25values and ideas
- 5:27of,
- 5:28you know,
- 5:29the United States
- 5:29in general,
- 5:30which,
- 5:30uh,
- 5:31I've,
- 5:31I've often summarized
- 5:33as the spirit of America
- 5:34is fuck you,
- 5:35don't tell me what to do.
- 5:36Yeah.
- 5:36Right.
- 5:37Like people,
- 5:37there's like a,
- 5:38a wild independence here
- 5:40and there's generations
- 5:41of people
- 5:41who decided
- 5:43to leave their home
- 5:44and go across the world
- 5:46because
- 5:46as uncertain
- 5:48as that was,
- 5:49it was better
- 5:50than where they were.
- 5:51And so,
- 5:52there's just this,
- 5:53you know,
- 5:54uh,
- 5:55lineage
- 5:56of people
- 5:57who have taken risks
- 5:58in a sense.
- 5:59Um,
- 6:00but,
- 6:00you know,
- 6:01it's so interesting
- 6:02here in the States,
- 6:03you know,
- 6:03when you think about
- 6:04the American dream,
- 6:05it is often
- 6:07some kind of mansion
- 6:08on some land
- 6:09where you don't have
- 6:11to interact with people
- 6:12and you can fly around
- 6:13in a private jet
- 6:14and,
- 6:15right,
- 6:15the,
- 6:16the major thing
- 6:17that,
- 6:18you know,
- 6:19a lot of that success
- 6:21story paints
- 6:22is privacy.
- 6:23We are a country
- 6:25that,
- 6:25uh,
- 6:26values privacy
- 6:28over public
- 6:30connection,
- 6:31right?
- 6:31The dream
- 6:32is to be private
- 6:33and only have
- 6:34to interact
- 6:34with who you
- 6:35want to interact
- 6:36with.
- 6:36And,
- 6:37that feeds
- 6:39into this
- 6:40kind of Marlboro
- 6:40man,
- 6:41right?
- 6:41Who's free,
- 6:42he's not constrained
- 6:44by anyone,
- 6:45he manages
- 6:46his own time,
- 6:47he comes and goes
- 6:48as he pleases,
- 6:49right?
- 6:50One of the big things
- 6:51about the Marlboro
- 6:51man is,
- 6:52he spends a lot
- 6:53of time alone
- 6:54and then when he
- 6:55comes in,
- 6:56he comes in.
- 6:56And,
- 6:58I think it points
- 6:59to,
- 6:59you know,
- 7:00this is a gross
- 7:01generalization,
- 7:02uh,
- 7:03but I'm going
- 7:03to speak to it
- 7:04that,
- 7:04you know,
- 7:05the gifts of a lot
- 7:06of Eastern cultures
- 7:07and the default
- 7:08of a lot of Eastern
- 7:08cultures are more
- 7:09communal.
- 7:10There's an orientation
- 7:11to the communal
- 7:12system,
- 7:13the family,
- 7:13the culture,
- 7:14uh,
- 7:15and the West
- 7:16is more about
- 7:17the individual
- 7:17and differentiation.
- 7:18And there's a lot
- 7:20of good in that,
- 7:21so I'm not here
- 7:21to knock that,
- 7:22right?
- 7:23It's incredible
- 7:24to be able to
- 7:25differentiate from
- 7:26a pathological
- 7:26system or a family
- 7:28or move away
- 7:28from somewhere
- 7:29and kind of start
- 7:31anew and fresh.
- 7:32but I think
- 7:33part of what
- 7:33we're here
- 7:34to talk about
- 7:34is what happens
- 7:35when that goes
- 7:36too far
- 7:36or when that's
- 7:38actually driven
- 7:38by wounding,
- 7:39which is,
- 7:39I think,
- 7:40a big part
- 7:41in the West
- 7:42and why we're
- 7:42just seeing
- 7:43staggering numbers
- 7:44around isolation
- 7:45and loneliness
- 7:46and the impact
- 7:47particularly on men
- 7:48and young men
- 7:49that this new
- 7:50culture
- 7:51of extreme
- 7:53isolation
- 7:53now
- 7:54further,
- 7:56I don't know,
- 7:56enabled by technology
- 7:58is allowing.
- 8:00and there's
- 8:02a romantic
- 8:02part of it,
- 8:03which is the
- 8:04other thing
- 8:04that,
- 8:05right,
- 8:06you and I
- 8:06talk about
- 8:07the lone wolf,
- 8:07we talk about
- 8:08the marble
- 8:08man,
- 8:09and one of the
- 8:09most challenging
- 8:10places to work
- 8:11with a guy
- 8:11around that
- 8:12is when that's
- 8:13actually what he
- 8:13wants,
- 8:14right?
- 8:15He thinks it's
- 8:15an asset
- 8:16that he doesn't
- 8:17need anyone,
- 8:18never asks for
- 8:20help,
- 8:21and is totally
- 8:22independent,
- 8:22right?
- 8:23There's this
- 8:23whole
- 8:24subculture,
- 8:26you know,
- 8:27in the US
- 8:27in particular
- 8:28of living
- 8:29off the grid.
- 8:30I want to be
- 8:31totally independent
- 8:32from any system
- 8:33and self-reliant,
- 8:35which again
- 8:35has some
- 8:36great
- 8:37stuff to it
- 8:38in terms of
- 8:39what it
- 8:39creates inside
- 8:42of us
- 8:42when we feel
- 8:43fully able to,
- 8:44you know,
- 8:45provide for
- 8:46ourselves.
- 8:47But I do
- 8:48think there's
- 8:49some shadow
- 8:49there in terms
- 8:50of what it
- 8:51points to in
- 8:52connections with
- 8:52other people,
- 8:53in what we
- 8:55actually know
- 8:55as humans,
- 8:56we need to
- 8:57thrive.
- 8:58The place
- 9:00where,
- 9:00you know,
- 9:01in our work,
- 9:01which is
- 9:02relationally
- 9:02based,
- 9:03and it's
- 9:03about having
- 9:04deeper,
- 9:04more meaningful,
- 9:05connective
- 9:06relationships that
- 9:07make you
- 9:08resilient,
- 9:08and a word
- 9:09that we like
- 9:11to use is
- 9:11anti-fragile,
- 9:12meaning you
- 9:13have this,
- 9:13it's beyond
- 9:14resilience,
- 9:15you have this
- 9:15ability to get
- 9:16into discomfort,
- 9:18quote-unquote
- 9:19discomfort emotionally,
- 9:21and actually
- 9:22find it,
- 9:22you know,
- 9:23not as
- 9:24uncomfortable as
- 9:25it once was.
- 9:26In fact,
- 9:26start to not
- 9:27mind emotional,
- 9:30feeling emotions
- 9:32in your body.
- 9:33That's kind of
- 9:34the essence of
- 9:34our work,
- 9:35is like,
- 9:35oh,
- 9:35it's okay
- 9:37to be able
- 9:37to,
- 9:38it's okay to
- 9:39feel sadness
- 9:39and anger
- 9:41and fear
- 9:42and jealousy.
- 9:42In fact,
- 9:43it's healthy,
- 9:44and we are
- 9:46part of our
- 9:46goal is to
- 9:47gain more
- 9:49fluidity and
- 9:49fluency in
- 9:50that with
- 9:51men and
- 9:53with people
- 9:54writ large.
- 9:55When it
- 9:57comes to the
- 9:58Marlboro Man,
- 9:58the Western
- 9:59Man,
- 9:59the Andrew
- 10:01Tate culture,
- 10:02what is it,
- 10:04Red Pill
- 10:04culture,
- 10:05you know,
- 10:07that kind of
- 10:09modernization of
- 10:09the Marlboro Man
- 10:11is to say,
- 10:12no,
- 10:12no,
- 10:12no,
- 10:12let's really
- 10:14triple down
- 10:15on non-feeling
- 10:17and just
- 10:18hard masculine
- 10:20dictating,
- 10:21this is how
- 10:21it's going to
- 10:22be to the
- 10:23world,
- 10:23to women.
- 10:24And
- 10:25as I study
- 10:28that culture
- 10:29more and
- 10:30more,
- 10:30what I see
- 10:32around it
- 10:33is a lot
- 10:35of undeveloped
- 10:36parts of
- 10:39our being
- 10:39that are,
- 10:41for lack
- 10:42of a better
- 10:42word,
- 10:42lack maturity
- 10:44emotionally.
- 10:45And so there's
- 10:46a way in which
- 10:47the psychology
- 10:47of the Marlboro
- 10:48Man,
- 10:49when it comes
- 10:49to relationship,
- 10:51has these
- 10:53expectations of,
- 10:54you know,
- 10:54women should
- 10:55just know
- 10:56what I'm
- 10:57thinking,
- 10:57they should
- 10:58just acquiesce
- 10:59to my moods,
- 11:00when I contract
- 11:01and when I
- 11:04choose to
- 11:05just be quiet
- 11:06and withdraw
- 11:06and not
- 11:09speak,
- 11:09that's because
- 11:10I'm strong
- 11:11and tough
- 11:11and I don't
- 11:12need to talk,
- 11:13when reality
- 11:14is I don't
- 11:15know how to
- 11:16talk,
- 11:16I don't
- 11:17have the
- 11:18tools,
- 11:18I don't
- 11:19have the
- 11:19skills,
- 11:20I'm actually
- 11:21undeveloped
- 11:22in this
- 11:22area,
- 11:22but the
- 11:23shadow of
- 11:24it is to
- 11:24say,
- 11:24is to
- 11:25rebrand it
- 11:26as this
- 11:27is strength,
- 11:27this is
- 11:28stoicism,
- 11:29and the
- 11:29truth is
- 11:30it's not,
- 11:30it's a
- 11:32place within
- 11:33our development
- 11:34that's very
- 11:36young,
- 11:36and we
- 11:37romanticize
- 11:38that,
- 11:39and we
- 11:39push women
- 11:40around,
- 11:41and we
- 11:41push culture
- 11:42around,
- 11:43and we
- 11:43play this
- 11:44really
- 11:44interesting
- 11:44competitive
- 11:45game,
- 11:45the Marlboro
- 11:46Man does,
- 11:47and any
- 11:48one of us
- 11:49can be pushed
- 11:49back into
- 11:50that,
- 11:50because it's
- 11:51our
- 11:51training,
- 11:51where we
- 11:52almost get
- 11:53into this
- 11:54competitive,
- 11:54we do get
- 11:56into this
- 11:56competitive
- 11:57dynamic
- 11:58with people,
- 11:59with women,
- 12:00where we
- 12:01don't want
- 12:03to be the
- 12:04first one
- 12:04to appear
- 12:04weak,
- 12:05so what
- 12:07happens
- 12:07relationally
- 12:08is women
- 12:09have to get
- 12:09bigger,
- 12:10they have to
- 12:10get louder,
- 12:11they have to
- 12:11get quote-unquote
- 12:12more dramatic
- 12:13to elicit
- 12:14some kind of
- 12:15response to
- 12:16be able to
- 12:16feel us
- 12:17and have a
- 12:19sense of
- 12:19where we're
- 12:20at as
- 12:21men,
- 12:22and we
- 12:24men just
- 12:25think,
- 12:26well,
- 12:26this is,
- 12:27we're winning
- 12:27the game,
- 12:28we're winning
- 12:29if we don't
- 12:30show weakness,
- 12:32and in fact,
- 12:33what's really
- 12:33happening is our
- 12:34debility,
- 12:35our weakness,
- 12:36our fragility
- 12:38is being pushed
- 12:39deeper and
- 12:40deeper and
- 12:41deeper into the
- 12:41shadow,
- 12:42and this
- 12:43is the
- 12:43relational
- 12:44wounding of
- 12:45the Marlboro
- 12:46man,
- 12:46is we
- 12:47insist that
- 12:48we're strong,
- 12:49we insist
- 12:50that we're
- 12:50tough,
- 12:51only to
- 12:52cover up
- 12:52this deep,
- 12:54deep,
- 12:54tender place
- 12:55that's not
- 12:57very strong,
- 12:57and that's
- 12:59not very
- 12:59tough,
- 13:00and that
- 13:00can really
- 13:01only develop
- 13:02strength in
- 13:03an environment
- 13:04that helps
- 13:05it heal,
- 13:06and of
- 13:08course,
- 13:08it's all
- 13:09in the
- 13:10romanticism,
- 13:11we want
- 13:12our land,
- 13:12we want
- 13:14to communicate
- 13:14with animals,
- 13:15with cows,
- 13:17and dogs,
- 13:17and sheep,
- 13:18because they're
- 13:19safe to be
- 13:19with,
- 13:20right,
- 13:20start opening
- 13:21up with the
- 13:22cows,
- 13:22I know some
- 13:24Marlboro man
- 13:24that have
- 13:25deep relationships
- 13:26with their
- 13:26cattle,
- 13:27they'll sing
- 13:28songs to
- 13:29their cattle,
- 13:29but when it
- 13:30comes to
- 13:30their wives,
- 13:31zip the
- 13:33lip,
- 13:33potato chip,
- 13:34they don't
- 13:36know how
- 13:36to articulate,
- 13:37and it's
- 13:42an interesting
- 13:43branding of
- 13:44American culture,
- 13:44and of course,
- 13:46at a political
- 13:47level,
- 13:47we see it now
- 13:48where you're
- 13:49not only not
- 13:50speaking,
- 13:50you're going to
- 13:51forward an
- 13:52entirely different
- 13:53narrative to
- 13:54say,
- 13:54actually,
- 13:54this is what's
- 13:55true,
- 13:55and kind of
- 13:57make gaslighting
- 13:59the new value
- 14:00of America,
- 14:01meaning I can
- 14:02just make up
- 14:03whatever I want
- 14:04and beat you
- 14:05with it,
- 14:06because I'm
- 14:07that tough,
- 14:08and you
- 14:10know,
- 14:10it's an
- 14:12interesting
- 14:12crossroads we're
- 14:14finding ourselves
- 14:14here,
- 14:15literally around
- 14:16what constitutes
- 14:17reality.
- 14:18Yeah,
- 14:21it's something
- 14:21I've been
- 14:22thinking and
- 14:23sharing a lot
- 14:24about,
- 14:24I'll say a
- 14:26manifestation of
- 14:27this is,
- 14:28you know,
- 14:29leading via
- 14:30domination is
- 14:32actually weak,
- 14:35and what I
- 14:36mean by that
- 14:37is,
- 14:37when we don't
- 14:38have the
- 14:39capacity to
- 14:40relationally
- 14:41connect with
- 14:42someone,
- 14:42and create
- 14:44like a win-win,
- 14:45we'll just try
- 14:47to override,
- 14:47right?
- 14:49So it's,
- 14:49well,
- 14:50you know,
- 14:51to some sense,
- 14:52it's easier to
- 14:54be an
- 14:54authoritarian than
- 14:55a democratic
- 14:56leader,
- 14:56because you
- 14:57don't have to
- 14:57get in there,
- 14:58hear different
- 14:58perspectives,
- 14:59try to get
- 15:00people on the
- 15:00same page,
- 15:01and govern
- 15:02effectively,
- 15:02and there's
- 15:04ways we do
- 15:04this in our
- 15:05life,
- 15:05individual lives
- 15:07as men,
- 15:07in that kind
- 15:08of more
- 15:08Marlboro,
- 15:08this is the
- 15:09way,
- 15:10right?
- 15:10I make this
- 15:11decision and
- 15:12everyone must
- 15:13follow me,
- 15:13and sometimes
- 15:14I'm not even
- 15:15going to tell
- 15:16you the
- 15:17reasoning behind
- 15:18that,
- 15:18because I'm
- 15:19just going to
- 15:19be silent,
- 15:20and I think
- 15:22there is that
- 15:23real fear of
- 15:24relationality that
- 15:25sometimes causes
- 15:26that pullback,
- 15:27because there's,
- 15:28you know,
- 15:28there's more
- 15:29risk,
- 15:29and there's
- 15:30more unknowns
- 15:31when we get
- 15:32connected in
- 15:33these ways as
- 15:34men,
- 15:35and that
- 15:35the Marlboro
- 15:36man energy
- 15:37is that
- 15:39energy of
- 15:40I never
- 15:43have to
- 15:43reveal my
- 15:44process,
- 15:45right?
- 15:47I can just
- 15:48share the
- 15:48outcome,
- 15:49and because
- 15:50process itself
- 15:52is messy,
- 15:52we get it
- 15:53wrong sometimes,
- 15:55and it
- 15:56invites feedback,
- 15:57right?
- 15:58Which is a
- 15:59really important
- 15:59thing for
- 16:00growth,
- 16:01life,
- 16:01and the
- 16:02Marlboro
- 16:02man doesn't
- 16:03really leave
- 16:04a lot of
- 16:04room for
- 16:05that in
- 16:05our culture.
- 16:06The other
- 16:07thing you were
- 16:08mentioning that
- 16:08I really want
- 16:09to point to,
- 16:09you know,
- 16:10we've talked
- 16:10about this
- 16:11resilience,
- 16:11anti-fragile
- 16:12thing,
- 16:13is the cost.
- 16:16So, yes,
- 16:17you can take
- 16:18on a frame of
- 16:19being tough.
- 16:20The way we
- 16:22do that is
- 16:23rigidity,
- 16:24right?
- 16:25We tighten
- 16:26up, and
- 16:27that can feel
- 16:28like resilience,
- 16:29right?
- 16:30and we talked
- 16:31about this in
- 16:31one of our
- 16:32previous episodes,
- 16:33you know,
- 16:34he's a really
- 16:34tough, strong
- 16:35man.
- 16:35It's like a
- 16:36slab of
- 16:37iron.
- 16:38But no matter
- 16:40what the
- 16:40material is,
- 16:41you hit it
- 16:41hard enough,
- 16:42long enough,
- 16:42it will break,
- 16:43and it will
- 16:44shatter,
- 16:44if it's just
- 16:46taking the
- 16:46impact.
- 16:47The impact.
- 16:47Anti-fragile,
- 16:49like we talk
- 16:49about, is about
- 16:50working with that
- 16:51energy and
- 16:52redirecting it,
- 16:52and actually
- 16:53getting stronger
- 16:54with each
- 16:55impact.
- 16:55But the
- 16:56thing, you
- 16:58know, I mean,
- 16:58it's right there
- 16:59in the name of
- 16:59the Marlboro
- 17:00Man, and
- 17:01even in a lot
- 17:01of the imagery,
- 17:02is the road
- 17:03to toughness
- 17:04is through
- 17:05numbness,
- 17:05right?
- 17:08It's the
- 17:08substance, it's
- 17:09the smoking,
- 17:09it's the
- 17:10jacking myself
- 17:11up, it's the
- 17:12numbing myself
- 17:13down with
- 17:13alcohol or
- 17:14weed these
- 17:15days.
- 17:15It's, this
- 17:17is where the
- 17:18Marlboro Man,
- 17:19in a sense,
- 17:20does perpetuate,
- 17:22and you know,
- 17:22people get all
- 17:23around, hissy
- 17:26around these
- 17:27terms the other
- 17:27day, but they
- 17:28perpetuate the
- 17:29patriarchy in
- 17:30that the
- 17:31belief that the
- 17:32male body is
- 17:33disposable, that
- 17:34it's an object,
- 17:35it's a thing,
- 17:38right?
- 17:39In Marlboro
- 17:40Men, this
- 17:41quality of man
- 17:43actually perpetuates
- 17:44that my body is
- 17:45a thing, it's a
- 17:47thing that gets
- 17:48in the way of
- 17:49me, and that I
- 17:50can override.
- 17:52and so, right,
- 17:54that stat I
- 17:56learned recently
- 17:57that was about
- 18:00men who
- 18:01heavily identify
- 18:03with stoic ideals,
- 18:04which are kind of
- 18:05right there with
- 18:06the Marlboro
- 18:07man, right?
- 18:07Essentially, there's
- 18:08good parts of it,
- 18:09but, you know,
- 18:10mind over matter,
- 18:10and it's kind of,
- 18:11I don't need anyone
- 18:12or never share
- 18:13anything, don't feel
- 18:14emotion, twice as
- 18:15likely to commit
- 18:16suicide, right?
- 18:18Because what
- 18:18we're doing is
- 18:19we're disconnecting
- 18:21from all that
- 18:22inside, and you
- 18:24can only medicate
- 18:26that so heavily.
- 18:28And in a lot of
- 18:29ways, suicide for
- 18:30men is the
- 18:31ultimate medication.
- 18:32It is the
- 18:34off switch that
- 18:35men turn to when
- 18:36they have no
- 18:37other way to be
- 18:39present and
- 18:40metabolize the
- 18:41tension and
- 18:43strife inside
- 18:43themselves.
- 18:44But we see
- 18:46this.
- 18:46I know you see
- 18:47it in people,
- 18:47you work with,
- 18:48we see it in
- 18:49older clients,
- 18:49we work with,
- 18:50the cost to
- 18:51the body,
- 18:52whether it's
- 18:53uppers or
- 18:54downers, men
- 18:55will grind
- 18:56their bodies.
- 18:57And when you
- 18:58think of the
- 18:59Marlboro man,
- 19:00you don't think
- 19:02about a beaming,
- 19:04vitality, healthy,
- 19:06flexible yogi,
- 19:07right, which
- 19:08might be the
- 19:09other extreme.
- 19:09You think of
- 19:10kind of a
- 19:11tight, rigid
- 19:12guy, right,
- 19:14whose body
- 19:15has a certain
- 19:17shape,
- 19:17shape, and
- 19:18can move
- 19:19with some
- 19:19power, but
- 19:20it's not
- 19:20fluid, right,
- 19:22it's not
- 19:22open.
- 19:23It's carrying
- 19:24a lot of
- 19:26heaviness.
- 19:27That's part of
- 19:28where his
- 19:28presence comes
- 19:29from.
- 19:29You can feel
- 19:30how much he's
- 19:31holding, how
- 19:32much he's
- 19:32seeing.
- 19:32But it's not
- 19:35healthy, right,
- 19:36and it hurts.
- 19:38And again,
- 19:39the trick with
- 19:40all this stuff
- 19:41is when we
- 19:42push back
- 19:43against the
- 19:43Marlboro man,
- 19:44it's not
- 19:45to say
- 19:45there's
- 19:45not important
- 19:46things about
- 19:46self-agency
- 19:47and resiliency
- 19:49and not
- 19:50collapsing into
- 19:50victimhood and
- 19:51just needing
- 19:51other people to
- 19:52take care of
- 19:52you.
- 19:53That's not
- 19:53at all it.
- 19:54What we're
- 19:55saying is
- 19:56just as the
- 19:57people who are
- 19:57often attracted
- 19:58to that are
- 19:59actually reacting
- 20:00to the polar
- 20:02of the totally
- 20:03collapsed man,
- 20:05they're just
- 20:06going on the
- 20:07other side.
- 20:07And what we're
- 20:08talking about is
- 20:09there's something
- 20:09in the middle.
- 20:10And the middle
- 20:11is actually way
- 20:12more powerful
- 20:13when a man can
- 20:14bring that
- 20:15resiliency and
- 20:16self-agency
- 20:17online, connect
- 20:18to others, learn
- 20:19how to work with
- 20:20the emotions.
- 20:21They go beyond
- 20:22resilient to
- 20:23anti-fragile,
- 20:23right, where I
- 20:24have a system
- 20:25around me.
- 20:25And, you
- 20:27know, I'll
- 20:28just end this
- 20:29note with, it's
- 20:29a beat I've hit
- 20:30before on this
- 20:31podcast and we've
- 20:32talked about, but
- 20:33it really applies
- 20:34to the Marlboro
- 20:35man, which is, I
- 20:36don't care how
- 20:36tough you think
- 20:37you are, there
- 20:38will be a day
- 20:39your body fails
- 20:40you as a man
- 20:41where you cannot
- 20:43just physically
- 20:44push through.
- 20:45It could be
- 20:46old age, it
- 20:47could be
- 20:48illness, it
- 20:49could be an
- 20:49accident, but
- 20:50there will be
- 20:52a moment.
- 20:53And that is
- 20:55the moment where
- 20:55you have to have
- 20:56some kind of
- 20:57system or
- 20:57community to
- 20:58catch you.
- 20:59And that is a
- 21:00moment where
- 21:00we're seeing a
- 21:01lot of men fall
- 21:02through the cracks
- 21:03in our hyper
- 21:04western
- 21:04individualized
- 21:06culture right
- 21:07now where
- 21:08when shit hits
- 21:09the fan for
- 21:10men, none of
- 21:11the traditional
- 21:12support structures
- 21:12are there for
- 21:13them.
- 21:13They haven't
- 21:14known how to
- 21:15plug into
- 21:15them and they
- 21:16fall fast,
- 21:17including all
- 21:18the way to
- 21:19just ending,
- 21:20right, ending
- 21:21their lives.
- 21:22Jason, I want
- 21:23to connect this
- 21:24to kind of a
- 21:25more modernization
- 21:26of the Marlboro
- 21:27man, which I
- 21:28think you can
- 21:28really help to
- 21:30flush out.
- 21:30There's a version
- 21:31of it in our
- 21:32generation and
- 21:33our generation
- 21:34and more so
- 21:35the generations
- 21:36right below
- 21:37us of the
- 21:39technocratic
- 21:40Marlboro man.
- 21:41So the tough
- 21:43guy, the tough
- 21:45intellectual ones
- 21:46and zeros coding
- 21:47guy who is
- 21:49shut down, who
- 21:50is withdrawn, who
- 21:51is isolated, but
- 21:53is really good
- 21:54with technology
- 21:55and of course
- 21:57is influenced
- 21:58by whatever
- 21:59algorithm is
- 22:00pushing masculinity
- 22:01which we
- 22:02talked about,
- 22:02Andrew Tate,
- 22:04Jordan Peterson
- 22:06and some of
- 22:09the bigger
- 22:10podcasters in
- 22:11this space
- 22:11and teachers
- 22:13where the same
- 22:15thing is occurring.
- 22:16People are,
- 22:17men are, these
- 22:18men are isolated,
- 22:19these men are
- 22:19lone wolves,
- 22:20these men are
- 22:22doubling down
- 22:23with a certain
- 22:24kind of, it's
- 22:25not the same
- 22:26kind of toughness
- 22:27as the
- 22:28Marlboro man,
- 22:28but it's the
- 22:29isolation, it's
- 22:31the insistence
- 22:32that this is
- 22:33the way, let
- 22:34me just push
- 22:35through with
- 22:36technology to
- 22:38not deal with
- 22:40interacting with
- 22:40human beings
- 22:41and getting
- 22:43connected and
- 22:44in fact the
- 22:45part of that
- 22:45generation that
- 22:46scares me the
- 22:46most is, I
- 22:49guess they're
- 22:50underdeveloped
- 22:51relationally in a
- 22:53not so dissimilar
- 22:54way as the
- 22:55Marlboro man.
- 22:56but at least
- 22:58the Marlboro
- 22:59man is like
- 23:00directly fuck
- 23:01you to everyone,
- 23:02you know, like
- 23:03fuck you, fuck
- 23:04off, leave me
- 23:05alone, whereas
- 23:06the technocratic
- 23:07man is kind of
- 23:07like I don't
- 23:08want to talk to
- 23:09you, get away
- 23:09from me, I
- 23:10don't know how
- 23:10to be around
- 23:11human beings,
- 23:12which leads to
- 23:14this isolation
- 23:15and kind of
- 23:19an even
- 23:21different kind
- 23:22of subset of
- 23:22personality that's
- 23:24you know, where
- 23:25awkwardness has
- 23:26become an
- 23:27actual state
- 23:27of being
- 23:28and there's
- 23:30not an ability
- 23:31to even relate
- 23:32face to face,
- 23:33like it's a
- 23:33culture that's
- 23:34built primarily
- 23:35around text,
- 23:37texting or
- 23:38emailing or
- 23:40you know,
- 23:42internet
- 23:43communication,
- 23:44which has its
- 23:44own set of
- 23:45rules and its
- 23:46own set of
- 23:47dynamics around
- 23:48how you're
- 23:49allowed to
- 23:50behave.
- 23:50And sometimes
- 23:53I get a
- 23:55little confused
- 23:55around that
- 23:56territory because
- 23:58I'm kind of a
- 23:59Marlboro man in
- 24:00the sense of I
- 24:01believe communication
- 24:02is on the
- 24:04phone, on a
- 24:05Zoom call, or
- 24:06face to face.
- 24:06That's
- 24:07communication.
- 24:08Anything else,
- 24:09anything other
- 24:10than that is just
- 24:11exchanging data.
- 24:13and if you
- 24:13start to have
- 24:14emotional
- 24:14conversations on
- 24:15a data platform,
- 24:16I mean, I
- 24:19just can't give
- 24:19that any
- 24:20credence.
- 24:20But I feel
- 24:21like you might
- 24:22have some
- 24:23ability to
- 24:23illuminate that
- 24:24and connect it
- 24:25to Marlboro
- 24:26culture, that
- 24:28kind of
- 24:29technocratic.
- 24:31Yeah, I mean,
- 24:32in a sense, I
- 24:33think the
- 24:34shift is, you
- 24:36know, that
- 24:36traditional
- 24:37Marlboro man
- 24:38back in the
- 24:39day when you
- 24:41did need
- 24:41something and
- 24:42occasionally would,
- 24:43right?
- 24:43I got to go
- 24:43into town, I
- 24:44got to get a
- 24:44new saddle or
- 24:45whatever to go
- 24:46all the way
- 24:47with that
- 24:47metaphor.
- 24:47You still
- 24:48have to talk
- 24:49to somebody,
- 24:49right?
- 24:50So there is
- 24:51a like visceral
- 24:53connection, even
- 24:54if it's rare,
- 24:54there's face to
- 24:56face.
- 24:56The shift we're
- 24:58seeing is
- 24:58increasingly
- 24:59mediated
- 25:00relationships.
- 25:01meaning it's
- 25:02not, there's
- 25:03something in
- 25:04between the
- 25:05connection, right?
- 25:06Texting, online
- 25:07technology that
- 25:09gives us, can
- 25:10create a false
- 25:12sense of
- 25:13connection or
- 25:14relationship, but
- 25:15it's not
- 25:16actually, right?
- 25:16It's what's
- 25:18very different
- 25:19about connecting
- 25:19over text or
- 25:20email than in
- 25:21person.
- 25:22You can take
- 25:23your time to
- 25:25really think about
- 25:26the words and
- 25:27how you're going
- 25:27to calculate it
- 25:29and what you're
- 25:29going to say.
- 25:30there can be a
- 25:31lot less room
- 25:32for messiness in
- 25:33some ways.
- 25:34It's not that
- 25:35perfect, but it's
- 25:36a different style
- 25:37of communication
- 25:37than I'm right
- 25:39here in front of
- 25:39you right now and
- 25:40we're having a
- 25:41conversation.
- 25:41I might take 20
- 25:42minutes to respond
- 25:43to you or I
- 25:44may take three
- 25:45hours to post
- 25:47something on a
- 25:48forum or a
- 25:48social media
- 25:49platform.
- 25:49So it adds a
- 25:52layer of
- 25:52abstraction.
- 25:53And what I would
- 25:55say with that is
- 25:56there's more
- 25:57control and
- 25:58less messiness,
- 25:58which again
- 26:00changes then the
- 26:01skill set you're
- 26:02building.
- 26:02And it's coming,
- 26:04it's coming fast.
- 26:05I think the
- 26:08men in
- 26:10particular are
- 26:12already being
- 26:13drawn to AI
- 26:14in relationships
- 26:15in a way that
- 26:16they're way more
- 26:17susceptible for
- 26:18because you don't
- 26:19have to have a
- 26:20messy interaction.
- 26:21Yeah.
- 26:22Right.
- 26:22And AI is not
- 26:23going to read
- 26:25your body language
- 26:26wrong or that
- 26:27there's a way it's
- 26:29always going to give
- 26:29you what you want.
- 26:30Yeah.
- 26:31Right.
- 26:32So there's less
- 26:32potential for
- 26:33conflict or
- 26:34messiness or
- 26:35getting it wrong
- 26:36in a sense,
- 26:36which is kind of
- 26:37the male dream.
- 26:38And I see it,
- 26:39you know,
- 26:40I see it happening
- 26:40and it's a real
- 26:43thing where it's
- 26:44another layer of
- 26:45abstraction where
- 26:46we don't have to
- 26:47deal with the
- 26:48messiness of both
- 26:50ourselves and
- 26:51another human
- 26:52being.
- 26:52And I think
- 26:53that's one of
- 26:54the skills that,
- 26:54you know,
- 26:55we really
- 26:56emphasize in our
- 26:59Heart of Shadow
- 26:59program is the
- 27:03capacity to stay
- 27:04connected when
- 27:05we're feeling
- 27:05messy or when
- 27:07we're in a
- 27:07relationally messy
- 27:08moment when the
- 27:10energy is charged.
- 27:11Right.
- 27:11So the Marlboro
- 27:12man will just
- 27:12cut off from it
- 27:14other than maybe
- 27:15anger, you know,
- 27:16it's kind of the
- 27:17one okay thing
- 27:18for that guy.
- 27:19So he can be,
- 27:19he can be angry,
- 27:20but everything
- 27:22else he'll just
- 27:23cut off from it.
- 27:24What we're saying
- 27:24is no, go deeper
- 27:25into it and learn
- 27:27to stay connected.
- 27:27And, you know,
- 27:29I was on talking
- 27:30to this other guy
- 27:31and it kind of
- 27:32blew me away
- 27:32where he gave me
- 27:34a reframe that I
- 27:35really liked of,
- 27:36you know, a lot
- 27:38of men's work
- 27:38culture.
- 27:39It's about going
- 27:40into your edge
- 27:41and hit your
- 27:41edge and go
- 27:42beyond your
- 27:43edge.
- 27:43And this thing
- 27:44was, well,
- 27:44another way to
- 27:45think about it.
- 27:45And I think this
- 27:46is what we do
- 27:47in the nervous
- 27:47system training and
- 27:48shadow work in
- 27:49particular is,
- 27:49actually what
- 27:50you're doing is
- 27:51you're expanding
- 27:51your comfort zone.
- 27:52So you're increasing
- 27:54the range
- 27:57of discomfort
- 27:59that you feel
- 28:01comfortable in.
- 28:01So if you and I
- 28:03are having a moment
- 28:03of conflict or me
- 28:04and my wife are in
- 28:05it rather than that
- 28:06being too much
- 28:07and I'm going to
- 28:07withdraw,
- 28:08which is what a lot
- 28:09of men do,
- 28:09or just explode
- 28:10or get reactive,
- 28:12I've increased my
- 28:13comfort zone to
- 28:14say, ooh, yeah,
- 28:15this is a new
- 28:15territory.
- 28:16There's a lot of
- 28:17energy here, but I
- 28:18feel comfortable
- 28:19staying in connection
- 28:21and present when I'm
- 28:22pissed off or she's
- 28:23pissed off or
- 28:23disappointed or
- 28:24whatever that might
- 28:25be.
- 28:25That's the kind of
- 28:27skill and capacity
- 28:28I think that the
- 28:30Marlboro men don't
- 28:31cultivate relationally
- 28:32and that the new
- 28:33technocrats are not
- 28:35doing as well.
- 28:35They just, they
- 28:36don't want to have
- 28:37to look someone in
- 28:38the eye and be
- 28:38messy.
- 28:39what they want
- 28:40is an AI to make
- 28:41a decision and
- 28:41then it's more
- 28:42efficient, right?
- 28:43But connection and
- 28:44efficiency aren't
- 28:46always hand in
- 28:46hand.
- 28:46Sometimes it's more
- 28:48like art.
- 28:48It's like being
- 28:49messy and you have
- 28:51to open yourself
- 28:52up to hurt.
- 28:53Like that's just,
- 28:55that's what
- 28:55relationship takes.
- 28:57And, you know, I
- 28:58think that's what a
- 28:58lot of men want to
- 29:00not have to
- 29:00experience.
- 29:01And so they'll
- 29:02push it down.
- 29:03I think the, the,
- 29:05the home, the
- 29:06home kind of
- 29:07driving it home
- 29:08here,
- 29:08the, the
- 29:09through line
- 29:10here, and I've
- 29:11heard this in the
- 29:12technosphere, every
- 29:14technology is built
- 29:15around really one
- 29:16principle.
- 29:17And that principle
- 29:18is how can we
- 29:19create a more
- 29:20frictionless experience?
- 29:22That's the word
- 29:23they use in, in
- 29:24sales, reduce
- 29:26friction.
- 29:26If you look at
- 29:28Grubhub, for
- 29:29example, it's so
- 29:31little interaction
- 29:32with, with
- 29:33anyone.
- 29:33You just open
- 29:34your front door
- 29:35and there's food.
- 29:38and if you
- 29:39look at buying
- 29:40a plane ticket,
- 29:41you can do, you
- 29:43don't even have to,
- 29:43you don't have to go
- 29:44to your gate anymore,
- 29:45right?
- 29:46You just, it's on
- 29:47your phone.
- 29:47You don't have to
- 29:48talk to any
- 29:49fucking one, just
- 29:50show them your
- 29:51phone, phone.
- 29:52So the, the, the
- 29:53phone is the
- 29:53mediator between
- 29:54everything.
- 29:55And are those
- 29:57things nice?
- 29:57Yeah, they're,
- 29:58they're, they're
- 29:58kind of cool.
- 29:59Uber is another
- 30:00example, right?
- 30:01It's like, and
- 30:02the car just
- 30:03magically shows up.
- 30:05And, and there, so
- 30:06there's this principle
- 30:07around how do I make
- 30:08everything in the
- 30:09technosphere less
- 30:10comfortable?
- 30:10And the Marlboro
- 30:11man is, how do I
- 30:13not deal with
- 30:14anyone's bullshit
- 30:15and just control my
- 30:16own?
- 30:17And you really
- 30:18nailed it with all,
- 30:20all of those systems
- 30:21are built around not
- 30:23having to confront
- 30:24hurt or pain.
- 30:26And of course, the
- 30:27end result, the end
- 30:28result for the end
- 30:29user in both of
- 30:31these scenarios is
- 30:32pain.
- 30:34and, and I'll
- 30:35say a very
- 30:37poignant and
- 30:41kind of frightening
- 30:45pain because I've
- 30:46worked with this
- 30:47man at the end of
- 30:49his life.
- 30:49I've worked with
- 30:51this man in his
- 30:51sixties and I've
- 30:53worked with this
- 30:53man in his
- 30:54seventies and I've
- 30:55worked with this
- 30:56man in his last
- 30:58breaths.
- 30:58I'm working with a
- 31:00man in that state.
- 31:02The thing that he
- 31:03tells me the most
- 31:04is he's so lonely
- 31:05and he's pushed
- 31:07everyone out of
- 31:08his life because
- 31:11he's been tough or
- 31:12he hasn't wanted to
- 31:13interact with anyone.
- 31:14And all he wants
- 31:17is a friend.
- 31:18And he says to me,
- 31:20the only friends I
- 31:21have are the people
- 31:22I pay to listen
- 31:25to me.
- 31:26and so I go to
- 31:27doctor's appointments
- 31:28now all the time
- 31:29just for connection.
- 31:32And of course,
- 31:34it's a controlled
- 31:35relationship.
- 31:36There are rules,
- 31:37there are parameters
- 31:38that make it a safe
- 31:39relationship.
- 31:39And this is what
- 31:43the Marlboro
- 31:44man,
- 31:44the technocratic
- 31:45man,
- 31:46the frictionless
- 31:47man trades on
- 31:49his pain is to
- 31:50say,
- 31:50you know what?
- 31:52actually,
- 31:52they don't even
- 31:53have this thought.
- 31:53I was going to say,
- 31:54you know what?
- 31:54I'll deal with this
- 31:55pain someday.
- 31:56They don't say that.
- 31:57They think,
- 31:57I don't want to deal
- 31:59with this pain right
- 31:59now.
- 31:59But the truth is
- 32:01that someday,
- 32:02like you said,
- 32:02Jason,
- 32:03the emotional state
- 32:04that you're faced
- 32:05with is this
- 32:06deep grief,
- 32:07this isolation
- 32:08and loneliness.
- 32:10and it's painful.
- 32:12It's painful to be
- 32:13around a man like
- 32:14that and to see,
- 32:15wow,
- 32:15this is what a
- 32:16lifetime of this
- 32:18kind of behavior
- 32:19leads to.
- 32:20And of course,
- 32:21it has to be
- 32:22medicated.
- 32:22There's often
- 32:24alcohol.
- 32:24There's,
- 32:25if not alcohol,
- 32:26there's usually
- 32:27marijuana.
- 32:27There's whatever
- 32:30the body can
- 32:31withstand,
- 32:31you know,
- 32:32and inevitably
- 32:33some kind of
- 32:35exiting state.
- 32:37And,
- 32:37you know,
- 32:38our message is
- 32:39it doesn't
- 32:40have to be
- 32:40that way.
- 32:41Pain is
- 32:42inevitable.
- 32:43Pain is the
- 32:45curriculum.
- 32:45That is what
- 32:46we're here to
- 32:46deal with.
- 32:47And our
- 32:48message to men,
- 32:49this is a
- 32:49challenge,
- 32:50is let's
- 32:51deal with it.
- 32:52Let's face it.
- 32:53You want to be
- 32:54tough?
- 32:54You want to
- 32:55have peace?
- 32:57The pathway
- 32:58is together.
- 32:59The pathway
- 33:00is to work
- 33:01it out.
- 33:01And Heart
- 33:03of Shadow
- 33:03is one of
- 33:04those pathways
- 33:05and
- 33:08Pillars of
- 33:10Presence,
- 33:10another program
- 33:11you're offering
- 33:11with men who
- 33:13are trying to
- 33:14find that
- 33:15connection and
- 33:15partnership and
- 33:17some of the
- 33:17other things
- 33:18you're offering.
- 33:18So I'll
- 33:20drop it there
- 33:20and let you
- 33:21take us
- 33:21home.
- 33:22Yeah,
- 33:24I think you
- 33:25just named
- 33:25it in that
- 33:26the paradox
- 33:28for the
- 33:28Marlboro
- 33:28man or
- 33:30a lot of
- 33:30what we're
- 33:31fed as
- 33:31men is
- 33:32I was just
- 33:32talking to
- 33:33my friend
- 33:34Robert Glover
- 33:35recently and
- 33:36he's like,
- 33:36yeah,
- 33:36you know,
- 33:37it's your
- 33:37rough edges
- 33:38that I'm
- 33:39attracted to.
- 33:40Right?
- 33:42It's actually
- 33:43the parts of
- 33:43you that are
- 33:45in pain or
- 33:45not perfect
- 33:46that are the
- 33:48very way to
- 33:49connection.
- 33:49It's how I
- 33:50feel connected
- 33:51to you.
- 33:51If you're
- 33:51a fucking
- 33:52perfect robot
- 33:53machine,
- 33:53there's nothing
- 33:54to connect
- 33:54to because I'm
- 33:55like,
- 33:55that's not
- 33:55me.
- 33:55I got all
- 33:56this goo
- 33:57inside and
- 33:57dark shit
- 33:58and I don't
- 33:58know what to
- 33:58do with it,
- 33:59right?
- 33:59But when you
- 34:00start talking
- 34:00about it,
- 34:01I'm like,
- 34:01oh yeah,
- 34:01I got that
- 34:01too.
- 34:02This is what
- 34:03we really
- 34:03see that
- 34:04is fundamentally
- 34:06different and
- 34:06particularly what
- 34:07we do in the
- 34:08Heart of Shadow
- 34:08is we connect
- 34:10around pain
- 34:10first.
- 34:11And not in
- 34:13like a victim
- 34:14we go and
- 34:16we directly
- 34:17confront our
- 34:18pain,
- 34:18which is so
- 34:19counter to
- 34:20what men are
- 34:21taught.
- 34:21And lo and
- 34:22behold,
- 34:23when men do
- 34:24that in
- 34:25community,
- 34:25with consciousness,
- 34:27bravery,
- 34:27courage,
- 34:28love,
- 34:28deep presence,
- 34:30it's bonding
- 34:31as fuck.
- 34:32Like it
- 34:33actually creates
- 34:35a deep
- 34:36level of
- 34:36connection
- 34:37and brotherhood
- 34:38that is so
- 34:40different than
- 34:40what most men
- 34:41experience.
- 34:42But it's
- 34:43counter to
- 34:44we think we
- 34:44have to get
- 34:45away from
- 34:45our pain
- 34:46and our
- 34:46pain is the
- 34:47scariest thing
- 34:48to connect
- 34:48with other
- 34:48people around
- 34:49so I'm
- 34:49going to
- 34:49numb it
- 34:50or just
- 34:50pretend like
- 34:51I don't
- 34:51have it.
- 34:52Whereas it's
- 34:53actually the
- 34:53very pathway
- 34:54to this
- 34:55deeper kind
- 34:55of connection
- 34:56so on
- 34:57your deathbed
- 34:59quite literally
- 34:59you feel
- 35:01held and
- 35:02known and
- 35:03seen in
- 35:04your experience
- 35:05in this
- 35:05lifetime and
- 35:06you're not
- 35:07going,
- 35:08you know,
- 35:09crossing that
- 35:09threshold alone
- 35:10in a sense.
- 35:11And you've
- 35:12metabolized a
- 35:14certain amount
- 35:14of pain and
- 35:15realized I
- 35:16don't have to
- 35:16just hold this
- 35:17alone.
- 35:17And in fact
- 35:18when we share
- 35:20pain healthily
- 35:21with each
- 35:21other,
- 35:22it actually
- 35:23becomes
- 35:23fuel for
- 35:25our lives
- 35:25like we're
- 35:26talking about.
- 35:26This is that
- 35:27anti-fragile
- 35:28thing,
- 35:28the thing we
- 35:29think we
- 35:29want to
- 35:29avoid when
- 35:31we start to
- 35:31turn towards
- 35:32it in
- 35:32community with
- 35:33other men.
- 35:33It actually
- 35:34generates energy.
- 35:36This is the
- 35:36thing we see
- 35:37every time we
- 35:38run a retreat.
- 35:39Guys go into
- 35:40grief, anger,
- 35:41rage, fear,
- 35:42and they come
- 35:43out more
- 35:43alive and
- 35:46more connected
- 35:46to each other.
- 35:47And again,
- 35:48that's very
- 35:49different from
- 35:50that, you
- 35:51know, I'm
- 35:52just going to
- 35:52slowly
- 35:54withering,
- 35:55tanned,
- 35:56getting more
- 35:57rigid energy
- 36:00of that
- 36:01Marlboro man
- 36:01as he
- 36:02ages.
- 36:02It does not
- 36:03have to be
- 36:03that way.
- 36:04So we
- 36:05strongly
- 36:06suggest,
- 36:06you know,
- 36:07if you've
- 36:08never experienced
- 36:09this kind of
- 36:10thing, whether
- 36:11it's with us
- 36:11or not,
- 36:12you know,
- 36:13you got to
- 36:13turn towards
- 36:14your pain.
- 36:14And the
- 36:15most powerful
- 36:16way to do
- 36:16that is going
- 36:17to be with
- 36:18other deep
- 36:18men.
- 36:19We got
- 36:20another
- 36:20Heart of
- 36:20Shadow
- 36:21coming up
- 36:21this fall.
- 36:22You can
- 36:22enroll now.
- 36:23Spots are
- 36:24very limited
- 36:25in this
- 36:25program.
- 36:25It's the
- 36:26deepest thing
- 36:26you and I
- 36:27offer.
- 36:28And it
- 36:30will rewrite
- 36:31your story
- 36:32around what
- 36:32it means to
- 36:33be anti-fragile
- 36:35as a man.
- 36:36That you
- 36:37think you
- 36:38can be
- 36:38tough alone,
- 36:39but you
- 36:40can be
- 36:40something far
- 36:41beyond tough
- 36:42when you
- 36:43have the
- 36:44right brotherhood
- 36:44around you.
- 36:45And that's
- 36:46at
- 36:47heartofshadow.com.
- 36:48Thanks,
- 36:49brother.
