- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:38Hi, it's Adam here and this is a hypnosis session all about
- 0:44calling fears bluff and there are some fears which are
- 0:50credible and true and useful. So if I got afraid at the idea
- 0:57of flying a helicopter all by myself with no training, that's
- 1:01a very good, useful fear. Or if I had fear at the idea of
- 1:06jumping into a bear enclosure in a zoo, that's probably a good
- 1:12fear. But there are lots of fears
- 1:14which are unfounded. There are lots of fears where
- 1:18you can think of fear as the acronym false evidence that
- 1:21appears real that nothing bad would happen, but you still feel
- 1:26that anxiety anyway. And those kind of fears, the
- 1:30best way to handle them is to get yourself in a high
- 1:33resourceful state and to do the thing that you would be afraid
- 1:37to do. Now, the problem with that is
- 1:40that it requires courage and bravery.
- 1:43But why are courage and bravery, bravery so highly regarded in
- 1:48our culture and society? It's because they're difficult.
- 1:52But by being brave, by being courageous, it means that you
- 1:56face the very thing that you're afraid of.
- 1:59And in doing so, most of the time, the fear disappears, your
- 2:03comfort zone expands, and the possibilities within your life
- 2:08also expand. And I've shared this story
- 2:12before and I, I talk about it at the beginning of a webinar that
- 2:14I've recently recorded. And that's available in the
- 2:17links, by the way, as to how I started being a therapist.
- 2:21And I started not by trying to be a therapist to other people,
- 2:25but trying to fix myself. Because I had.
- 2:27Severe social anxiety and I started avoiding more and more
- 2:30people until I became a recluse and I went to a library late at
- 2:34night to try and find a solution for me.
- 2:36And when I started doing the things that I was avoiding, that
- 2:40actually my confidence grew and it grew way beyond where it
- 2:44originally started because I started facing the fear and
- 2:47calling the bluff of fear rather than believing that the fear was
- 2:51real. So if any of these things
- 2:53resonate with you, I think you'll get some value from this
- 2:56session. But to really get value, I would
- 2:59encourage you to think about what are your biggest fears, not
- 3:04the credible fears, but the fears that are haunting you and
- 3:08they're not really real things, that nothing really bad could
- 3:12happen. It might be the disapproval of
- 3:14other people or rejection or something like that, where
- 3:19actually if you just did it in an audacious, confident,
- 3:22courageous way, actually you would go beyond the fear and
- 3:26that just wouldn't bother you anymore.
- 3:29And I'll share this with you because I, I now do a podcast
- 3:34daily. I'm regularly on conferences and
- 3:36things like that. But I remember the very first
- 3:38time I was on radio and I, I called in to win a prize on my
- 3:42local radio station. And it was a small radio
- 3:45station. And I got so nervous at the idea
- 3:48of just being on radio and that there was other people
- 3:50listening. And it was at 6:00 in the
- 3:52morning before my paper and like nobody was listening anyway.
- 3:55And I got so, so nervous. And now I broadcast to thousands
- 4:01of people every single day. It doesn't bother me at all.
- 4:03So when you face the fear, the fear disappears a lot of the
- 4:07time. So I'd encourage you to think
- 4:09about your fears. What would calling the bluff of
- 4:12that fear feel like and be like? And then you'll get some more
- 4:16value from this session. And if you like the idea of
- 4:18checking out that website where I talk about sorry, the webinar
- 4:22where I talk about working with me and and why I'm a therapist
- 4:25to begin with, have a look in the description for that.
- 4:28And there's lots of other resources there as well.
- 4:30Completely free. For now though.
- 4:32Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be distracted or
- 4:35disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 4:50Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 5:00wonderful feeling of calm and relaxation.
- 5:05And as you exhale, give permission to release any
- 5:14emotions, any sensations, any feelings that aren't useful for
- 5:22you right now. Tension isn't needed.
- 5:27Stress isn't needed, so just allow anything unuseful to feel
- 5:33like it's melting away and leaving your body in your
- 5:41outward breath. And when you breathe in, breathe
- 5:47in deeper than you normally would.
- 5:51And as you exhale, just allow that outward breath to elongate,
- 6:02to keep on going and going maybe twice as long as a normal
- 6:08outward breath. And each breath allows you to
- 6:15drift deeper and deeper, and with your eyes closed, notice
- 6:26how much easier it is to focus on the sound of my words, the
- 6:32rhythm of my voice. And I wonder if you can notice
- 6:40how the world outside can simply wait.
- 6:45Because this time this space belongs entirely to you, and you
- 6:58might become aware of the weight of your body, the places where
- 7:04you are supported, the chair or surface holding you, doing all
- 7:11the work so you don't have to. And with each breath, without
- 7:23forcing anything, just allowing, you can feel something beginning
- 7:32to settle, like a snow globe that's been shaken and is now
- 7:40settling into stillness. Your unconscious mind is always
- 7:47listening, always learning, and it already knows so much more
- 7:58than your conscious mind gives it credit for.
- 8:02And that's perfectly fine. And I wonder if you could
- 8:09imagine a trail, a road or a pathway, your pathway stretching
- 8:18out before you, perhaps through a forest or nature, with the
- 8:24light filters through the leaves in that particular way that it
- 8:29does, where every step takes you somewhere quieter, somewhere
- 8:38more you. And as you walk, you might
- 8:45notice but the sounds around you have a quality of distance now
- 8:54that the mind's usual chatter becoming like birdsong in the
- 9:00far trees, present but peaceful and not requiring your attention
- 9:09at all. Take steps there on the path
- 9:15through the forest. 10 steps deeper, 9 and then eight.
- 9:22Each step double s your relaxation. 765, the ground
- 9:29beneath. Feel solid, real.
- 9:32You are safe. 432 and 1, and maybe there's a clearing in the
- 9:43forest. And here you are in this place
- 9:50of deep knowing where your unconscious mind can receive and
- 9:58where something important is already beginning to shift.
- 10:07And there is a story, a very old story, that every human lives
- 10:16out without perhaps realizing it.
- 10:22And your unconscious mind knows this story well.
- 10:31Once there was a person who lived in a world that felt just
- 10:37manageable. A world with edges.
- 10:43Edges that felt safe, edges that felt known.
- 10:50And within those edges, life was predictable.
- 10:56It had its rhythms, its routines, its familiar shapes.
- 11:03And sometimes, in certain situations, when the world felt
- 11:08too large or too watchful, the sensation would arrive, a
- 11:16tightening, A quickening, something the mind called
- 11:22danger, even when there was no danger at all.
- 11:30And for a long time, the instinct was to step back from
- 11:36that edge, to find safety in the smaller space.
- 11:45The mind learns early that if you avoid the thing that
- 11:51frightens you, that horrible feeling goes away.
- 11:59But here's what your unconscious already suspects, or perhaps
- 12:05already certain of. Avoidance doesn't shrink the
- 12:11fear, it feeds it. It enlarges it.
- 12:18It is a room that grows with the darkness you feed it, and
- 12:24shrinks very naturally when light or action is brought in.
- 12:35And now something has shifted, hasn't it?
- 12:42Because you already know this. At some level, you've already
- 12:47begun to answer a call. A call that comes not from
- 12:53outside, but from somewhere deeper than thought.
- 13:02And that call sounds like this. What if the very thing I've been
- 13:09avoiding is the thing that will set me free?
- 13:16Your body, in its wisdom, has been preparing you all along.
- 13:25That quickening you feel before a challenge, those sensations
- 13:31you once called anxiety, is the body summoning its resources,
- 13:38calling in its reserves, getting ready.
- 13:46An athlete before a race, an actor there on the edge of the
- 13:53stage, the speaker before hundreds of people.
- 14:01They all feel it. That aliveness, that readiness,
- 14:07the body saying I know this matters, I am here and nothing
- 14:15will deter me. And what if from this moment you
- 14:21could meet that sensation not with resistance, but with
- 14:26recognition? Ah, there you are.
- 14:32I know what you are. You are my preparation.
- 14:37You are the edge of my comfort zone.
- 14:43You or my body getting ready to be brilliant.
- 14:50FEAR, fear. False evidence that appears
- 14:58real. There's something important to
- 15:03understand about this guardian at the gate, this sensation that
- 15:09stands on the border of your edges of your comfort zone.
- 15:16Imagine for a moment, you are walking through a dark room, and
- 15:24in the shadows something looms. Something large, something that
- 15:30feels threatening. The minds is danger.
- 15:36The body braces. Then you reach out.
- 15:43You find the light switch and what you thought was a monster
- 15:49or a villain is a coat on a chair.
- 15:54What was scary, enormous, dangerous, is ordinary.
- 16:00What felt real was simply false evidence appearing real FEAR.
- 16:13False evidence appearing real fear is not always a signal of
- 16:21danger. It's a signal of significance.
- 16:27It's the psyche saying this matters.
- 16:32Pay attention, you are about to grow.
- 16:40I want you to picture a child that was so afraid you helped
- 16:49them cross that threshold of fear into something they could
- 16:53do. What you did for them, you can
- 16:58do for yourself. You already know how because you
- 17:05showed someone else the way. Darkness only needs one thing to
- 17:13dissolve. Light and action is light.
- 17:20Movement is light. The simple decision to take one
- 17:25step toward The thing is light. In the old stories, the hero is
- 17:37always tested, not once, but repeatedly.
- 17:43And each test is not a punishment.
- 17:47It's a gift in disguise, an opportunity to discover what
- 17:55they truly are made of. And there is a roar, a simple
- 18:03but powerful rule, one that works like a compass in
- 18:09uncertain terrain. When I notice anxiety that
- 18:15serves no useful purpose, when I notice fear that is protecting
- 18:21me from nothing, I move toward it until the feeling subsides.
- 18:32What if that is how you call fear's bluff?
- 18:38You look it in the eye and you say I see you and I'm doing it
- 18:46anyway. The bluff collapses.
- 18:53It always does, because it has no substance, only the
- 19:00appearance of substance. In the moment you step forward,
- 19:07reality reveals itself, and reality is almost always kinder
- 19:17than fear promised it would be. And each time you call the
- 19:24bluff, something happens in the nervous system.
- 19:31A new pathway forms, a new reference point is created.
- 19:40The unconscious mind files it carefully and notes we did that
- 19:50and we are still here. And actually, we are more than
- 19:58we were before. Feel like this is the next
- 20:03stepping stone after? Let's see.
- 20:09And what if you unleash your desire to call the bluff of
- 20:15fear? To move beyond the edges,
- 20:19expanding the comfort zone? There comes a moment.
- 20:26In every hero's journey, the darkest moment, the greatest
- 20:35challenge, the thing that seems too large, the situation that
- 20:43seems designed specifically to undo all progress.
- 20:51In the old stories they call this the Nemesis, the supreme
- 20:59test, the dragon at The Cave entrance, the storm before the
- 21:07harbour. And here is the secret that only
- 21:13those who have crossed this threshold know.
- 21:18The Nemesis is not there to defeat the hero, the Nemesis is
- 21:23there to reveal them. They show the hero what and who
- 21:31they have become. So when the test comes, and it
- 21:39will come as it comes for every person, rather than fear it, you
- 21:46can welcome it, as strange as that sounds.
- 21:51You can say I've been expecting you.
- 21:56This is the thing that proves I have changed.
- 22:02This is the fire that tempers the steel.
- 22:10And every time you face the thing outside your comfort zone,
- 22:16every time you take that step into the daunting space, your
- 22:23whole comfort zone expands. Not just in that area, but
- 22:29everywhere. Because courage is not
- 22:46compartmentalised. It belongs to all of you.
- 23:00Stand up in front of people who might laugh when something
- 23:04happens to your fear of smaller judgements.
- 23:09Volunteer for that difficult thing and the ordinary difficult
- 23:15things become easy. Face the one big fear and the
- 23:23100 small fears. Loosen their grip.
- 23:29And what is the reward for all this?
- 23:33For calling the bluff, for moving toward the shadow, for
- 23:40stepping into the daunting thing?
- 23:46What if it's a life, a future, a self that is more capable,
- 23:54stronger, larger than it was? I want you to imagine a circle
- 24:02drawn in the sand. Everything inside the circle is
- 24:07familiar, safe, known. Everything outside the circle in
- 24:14the sand is unknown, uncertain. This is the comfort zone.
- 24:28Just imagine every time you step outside the circle, it grows.
- 24:34It expands to include where you went.
- 24:39The circle gets bigger, your world gets bigger, and the
- 24:47person at the centre of that circle gets bigger too.
- 24:53A goldfish in a bowl remains small.
- 24:57A goldfish in a lake becomes large.
- 25:02Those things that once caused dread would then feel
- 25:07manageable. The sleep that was broken by
- 25:12tomorrow's worry now comes naturally because your nervous
- 25:18system has learned through experience, not just through
- 25:24words. That the world on the other side
- 25:28of fear is survivable, is worthwhile, is often wonderful.
- 25:41And just as you have already begun to notice a different
- 25:46quality to the mornings, a different relationship with the
- 25:51sensation in your chest before a challenge, this is only the
- 25:58beginning of how different things will feel in every great
- 26:07story. The hero returns home, but they
- 26:13return changed, carrying something they didn't have when
- 26:18they left. A gift, a wisdom, a medicine
- 26:27that they now offer to others. You are already living this.
- 26:36Every breakthrough, every progress within you is an
- 26:42opportunity to guide someone else.
- 26:53You already know where you are in this story.
- 26:58I want you to imagine that future where you return the
- 27:03conquering hero in possession of that gift that benefits you, but
- 27:11also that you can give to others.
- 27:15And just as a candle can light other candles, your gift doesn't
- 27:21disappear if you give it to others.
- 27:26The work you do on yourself never stays contained to you.
- 27:32It ripples. It models.
- 27:36It gives permission to those who watch you.
- 27:41Simply be someone courageous, brave, confident.
- 27:50That shy, timid version of you from the past flourishes,
- 27:58expands, because you are someone who faces the daunting thing,
- 28:06someone undeterred. And your unconscious mind can
- 28:12carry all of this forward, not as an instruction to be
- 28:18remembered, but as a knowing that is already part of you,
- 28:25already woven into how you move through the world and your
- 28:31future. Because from this place of deep
- 28:37knowing, allow these understandings to settle into
- 28:44the places where change lives. Not in the mind that thinks, but
- 28:52in the body that acts, in the nervous system that remembers,
- 29:00in the unconscious that guides. Whenever you notice fear that
- 29:07has no useful purpose, you will know it as false evidence
- 29:13appearing real, and you will choose action.
- 29:18Action calls the bluff of that fear.
- 29:23And every time you step outside your comfort zone, your comfort
- 29:28zone expands and you expand with it.
- 29:35You can always call fear's bluff.
- 29:40You can move toward it. Until the.
- 29:43Feeling dissolves and disappears, and the more you do
- 29:49it, the harder fear is defined. Because your hero's journey is
- 29:56already under way and the tests you face are not obstacles.
- 30:04They are the very evidence that you are growing, evolving,
- 30:08improving, because you are becoming someone who acts
- 30:14despite the feeling and with each action you become more of
- 30:21who you are truly meant to be. Very soon I will count from 1:00
- 30:32to 10:00 to awaken you. You will awaken within you set
- 30:40of beliefs around fear and anxiety, a desire to do what is
- 30:50beyond the comfort zone, to find it fun to call the bluff of
- 30:57fear. So take a deep breath in through
- 31:02your nose and out through your nose.
- 31:07Just wiggle your fingers and wiggle your toes.
- 31:10Connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now count
- 31:15from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 31:19Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8 open your
- 31:29eyes. Open your eyes 910 Wide awake,
- 31:34Wide awake. Wide awake.
