- 0:04Speaker 1: Weird way. Time magazine calls it a vision of the
- 0:49Speaker 1: movie's future, cites that no I, no camera has ever
- 0:52Speaker 1: before beheld up.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I finds it utterly news vividly exciting, a trip and
- 0:57Speaker 2: a half.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Newsweek describes it as some where you've never been, a
- 1:01Speaker 1: brave new world set inside a computer. No movie has
- 1:04Speaker 1: ever looked like this before. Omney calls it an imaginative,
- 1:08Speaker 1: spectacular film.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Tron rated PG now playing a Man's Chinese Hollywood, Man's
- 1:14Speaker 2: west Wood and other selected theaters. Kevin Flynn was reported
- 1:17Speaker 2: missing today. He was last scene with his son Sam.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Sam. I was Paige last night. I came from your
- 1:24Speaker 1: dad's office.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Numbers been disconnected for twenty years.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Where am I am? I jam Dad. We have to
- 1:35Speaker 1: get you out of here. It's not that easy, said
- 1:38Speaker 1: here they come.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I'm not going home without you.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Drawn legacy. I've created mankind's most advanced artificial intelligence, the
- 1:50Speaker 1: world's most dangerous weapon. I can think for itself here.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Think you're in control of this, John, I came here
- 2:02Speaker 2: from the digital world. I'm looking for something, something you've discovered.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So you've been saying on me. I was directed to
- 2:12Speaker 1: kill you.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Hacking seems pretty tame by comparison. My world is coming
- 2:23Speaker 2: and they are going to destroy yours.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Oh my god, there's hundreds of them. Drawn ares, rated PG. Thirteen,
- 2:41Speaker 1: Get tickets now only in theaters October ten, film for IMAX.
- 2:45Speaker 1: At some point in my life, twenty ten may not
- 2:47Speaker 1: have seemed like a long time ago, but at this
- 2:50Speaker 1: point in my life, twenty ten is fifteen years ago,
- 2:54Speaker 1: which is inexhausting an amount of time in a lot
- 2:57Speaker 1: of ways, primarily for the reason of the lack of
- 3:02Speaker 1: time that it's the length of time rather that it's
- 3:07Speaker 1: been since a Tron sequel came out is fifteen years,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and fifteen years doesn't seem like a long time. But
- 3:15Speaker 1: given that the original Tron came out in nineteen eighty two,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and the sequel came out in twenty ten, and then
- 3:21Speaker 1: the other sequel comes out in twenty twenty five, we
- 3:24Speaker 1: have a span of time that is forty three years.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And those forty three years have seen technology change quite
- 3:34Speaker 1: a bit, and we've gone from Tron, which was as
- 3:39Speaker 1: eighties as it comes, to Tron Legacy, which in a
- 3:41Speaker 1: lot of ways was as late two thousands, early oughts
- 3:45Speaker 1: as it comes, and then Tron aries, which man really
- 3:47Speaker 1: feels like a twenty twenty five movie. And while the
- 3:51Speaker 1: second movie's title may be about legacy, I actually feel
- 3:55Speaker 1: like the third movie is about legacy as well, but
- 3:58Speaker 1: in a different kind of direction. And the thing that
- 4:02Speaker 1: is always so interesting for me about something like Tron
- 4:05Speaker 1: and watching you know, a sequel that came out in
- 4:07Speaker 1: the twenty tens, which is you know, two years to
- 4:11Speaker 1: two years into the iPhone being out, you know, to
- 4:14Speaker 1: see how far technology has come even since then, and
- 4:17Speaker 1: it feels like, you know, we're Tron Legacy is so
- 4:20Speaker 1: passe in a way, and it feels like, you know,
- 4:22Speaker 1: another lifetime ago, as it were, And what's you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: crazy about Tron legacy and Tron airies and just life
- 4:30Speaker 1: in general in terms of the length of time passing
- 4:33Speaker 1: and you know, blinking one day and it's been fifteen
- 4:35Speaker 1: years and there's a new Tron sequel, is I had
- 4:40Speaker 1: actually Tron coming out the original legacy that the original
- 4:45Speaker 1: sequel came out before kind of my life became my life.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I guess in a lot of ways, twenty ten was
- 4:52Speaker 1: I was twenty years old, I hadn't met my ex wife,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I hadn't gotten three dogs, I hadn't moved to a break.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I hadn't even finished college at the University of North Texas.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I wasn't even at the university or with Texas for
- 5:07Speaker 1: that matter. I was actually still at the University is
- 5:12Speaker 1: Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri, Jesus Christ, and I was
- 5:16Speaker 1: still up there. I was still contemplating trying to figure
- 5:18Speaker 1: out a way to get back to Texas. And I
- 5:21Speaker 1: saw Tron Legacy with some friends that I would later
- 5:25Speaker 1: go to India with at the AMC North Park in Dallas, Texas.
- 5:31Speaker 1: AMC North Park is a hell of a theater. I
- 5:33Speaker 1: actually went to the AMC North Park to see Hot Fuzz,
- 5:37Speaker 1: the premiere of Hot Fuzz at AFI Dallas, and I
- 5:40Speaker 1: got to meet Simon Peg and Nick Frost with a
- 5:43Speaker 1: very good high school friend of mine, who I think
- 5:45Speaker 1: likes Tron as much as I do, if not probably more.
- 5:49Speaker 1: You know, Tron Legacy is a movie that has a
- 5:52Speaker 1: very special place in my heart, not just because it's
- 5:55Speaker 1: kind of a marker in time for me, but also
- 5:58Speaker 1: the daft punk of it all, also the Tron of
- 6:02Speaker 1: it all. You know, liking Tron at one point was
- 6:04Speaker 1: not cool talking about the original one, not the sequel.
- 6:07Speaker 1: And I'm not sure liking Tron has ever been cool.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm not sure how Tron has has has it has
- 6:14Speaker 1: had as many sequels as it has, with may has
- 6:17Speaker 1: making as little money as it has and given the
- 6:19Speaker 1: kind of weird chicanery with the new film and the
- 6:23Speaker 1: Jared Leto of it all, which boy, any time Jared
- 6:25Speaker 1: Leto's involved in anything, there's gonna be something going on.
- 6:29Speaker 1: It's it's weird to me that Tron is a thing,
- 6:32Speaker 1: but it's weird to me that Tron is not a
- 6:35Speaker 1: thing because it is a thing, but it's not a thing.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And they keep trying to make it a thing, but
- 6:39Speaker 1: it is a thing, but it's not a thing. And
- 6:41Speaker 1: it was Deadpool before Deadpool. And while they didn't leak
- 6:44Speaker 1: the footage, they essentially had test footage at Comic Con
- 6:48Speaker 1: in like two thousand and eight, and if you know
- 6:51Speaker 1: what I'm talking, if you know, you know, it's a
- 6:53Speaker 1: teaser trailer that came out of nowhere and it had
- 6:56Speaker 1: Jeff Bridges in it, and it was essentially a proof
- 6:59Speaker 1: of constant similar to the Deadpool kind of footage that
- 7:02Speaker 1: ends up getting the Deadpool film made, which Ryan Reynolds
- 7:05Speaker 1: finally copped to shocking, said nobody, Jesus, Ryan, Jesus, Ryan Reynolds.
- 7:11Speaker 1: At this point, why would anybody be surprised you leaked it.
- 7:13Speaker 1: There'd be no repercussions. You've made the company billions of dollars,
- 7:18Speaker 1: my guy, Like chill, it's fine, Like nobody cares. This
- 7:22Speaker 1: was a little bit more above board. And when you're
- 7:24Speaker 1: talking Disney in the in the late two thousands, early aughts,
- 7:27Speaker 1: everything is done above board. This was done before they
- 7:30Speaker 1: acquired Star Wars, which is kind of why Star Star
- 7:34Speaker 1: Wars and Tron Legacy feel very one and the same.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I mean, Tron Legacy feels like a early aughts, late
- 7:41Speaker 1: two thousand's legacy sequel, if not the legacy sequel in
- 7:45Speaker 1: a lot of ways, like rewatching it. So much of
- 7:48Speaker 1: now's legacy sequels are kind of rooted in this. Again,
- 7:52Speaker 1: like I don't want to say this is the progenitor
- 7:54Speaker 1: of it, because I think this would be giving Tron
- 7:56Speaker 1: Legacy too much credit. But I also don't think it
- 7:59Speaker 1: would be unfair to say something like Tron Legacy deserves
- 8:03Speaker 1: a spot in the better legacy sequel discussion, because now
- 8:07Speaker 1: that that kind of conversation is willed out. Over fifteen
- 8:11Speaker 1: years since this movie came out, I think that there
- 8:14Speaker 1: have been a glut of legacy sequels that have not
- 8:18Speaker 1: done a very good job, including Star Wars. I would
- 8:20Speaker 1: actually say Tron Legacy takes more chances than Star Wars does,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and it's a little bit more irreverent with the source
- 8:27Speaker 1: material than Star Wars ever was. I think that, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 1: if you went into Tron Legacy expecting the original Tron movie,
- 8:34Speaker 1: which again was not a hit when it came out,
- 8:37Speaker 1: so the love for it is purely reversed nostalgia based.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I don't understand why anyone needs to be reverent with
- 8:44Speaker 1: the source material. I mean, yes, Ghostbusters was a hit,
- 8:48Speaker 1: but do we need to be reverent with the source material? No,
- 8:50Speaker 1: for fuck's sake, you can watch a movie with the
- 8:53Speaker 1: proton packs, but we don't have to have Egon's ghosts
- 8:56Speaker 1: showing up in the last frames of the movie. And
- 8:59Speaker 1: I love Ghostbus, but it's just at some point it
- 9:01Speaker 1: becomes masturbatory, and I think Tron Legacy is a better
- 9:05Speaker 1: balance of fan service, you know, whatever you want to
- 9:09Speaker 1: call it. You know, the nostalgia bating and new ideas
- 9:13Speaker 1: being executed, and I think those new ideas are kind
- 9:15Speaker 1: of why the movie is all over the place because
- 9:18Speaker 1: a lot of them don't land, but a lot of
- 9:20Speaker 1: them again don't expect a lot of things to land.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You know it it Tron Legacy in a lot of
- 9:25Speaker 1: ways feels like a second draft, maybe not a third draft,
- 9:28Speaker 1: and you know, there is an interesting story there. I
- 9:31Speaker 1: actually think the story of Tron Legacy is interesting with
- 9:34Speaker 1: the you know, the father and the three creations with Kora,
- 9:38Speaker 1: his son Sam, and then Clue the you know, the
- 9:41Speaker 1: digital Avatar, and in a lot of ways, it is
- 9:46Speaker 1: a story of legacy that makes good on the title
- 9:49Speaker 1: of legacy in a way that like it's you know,
- 9:52Speaker 1: it's kind of signaling what it is ahead of time,
- 9:54Speaker 1: which isn't a bad thing. Star Wars The Force Awakens is,
- 9:57Speaker 1: in my opinion, like the worst example of mass distribatory
- 10:00Speaker 1: fan service. And it's not that I do or don't
- 10:03Speaker 1: like Star Wars Force Awakens. I've done an episode on
- 10:06Speaker 1: each of those Star Wars you know sequels when they
- 10:09Speaker 1: came out, including Force Awakens, within like an hour of
- 10:11Speaker 1: seeing the movie, and in a private screening with my
- 10:16Speaker 1: friends family because they their dad loved Star Wars so
- 10:21Speaker 1: much that they rented out the ipic feeder for us
- 10:25Speaker 1: to watch it. And now we all loved it at
- 10:27Speaker 1: the time. Like I'm not even gonna pretend that we didn't.
- 10:29Speaker 1: There's a whole episode with me and my friend James,
- 10:32Speaker 1: who I went to the movie with, with my friend Brian,
- 10:35Speaker 1: who loves Star Wars. We all love Star Wars. It's
- 10:39Speaker 1: not a matter of loving Star Wars. It's just a
- 10:40Speaker 1: matter of being exhausted at the way these ips or
- 10:44Speaker 1: franchises are being handled by people, because in a lot
- 10:47Speaker 1: of ways, like the reverence to the source material is
- 10:51Speaker 1: needed in some respect, but I wouldn't say, like, let's
- 10:54Speaker 1: treat it like fucking gospel, for God's sakes. And in
- 10:58Speaker 1: a lot of ways, I think the people that are
- 10:59Speaker 1: disappointed by something like Tron Legacy are disappointed that it's
- 11:02Speaker 1: not I don't I don't know what people were expecting
- 11:04Speaker 1: with Tron Legacy, frankly, like you got a movie that's
- 11:07Speaker 1: a sequel to Tron that did like again, that didn't
- 11:10Speaker 1: even feel like it was ever really going to happen.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I mean, it had been talked about for fucking years.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I mean it had been talked about since the original
- 11:18Speaker 1: one came out, I mean essentially since the nineties. Uh,
- 11:22Speaker 1: they had talked about another Tron movie, and Tron, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 1: had even been discussed as being a Pixar thing in
- 11:28Speaker 1: nineteen ninety nine. So you know, there was a sequel
- 11:32Speaker 1: video game that came out that you know, reminiscent of
- 11:35Speaker 1: speaking of Ghostbusters with the Ghostbusters video Game, which is
- 11:38Speaker 1: still the best Ghostbusters sequel of anything that's ever come out,
- 11:43Speaker 1: no offense to any of the movies, and I actually
- 11:44Speaker 1: like Frozen Empire, but I think the video game is
- 11:46Speaker 1: still the best sequel thing of Ghostbusters ever come out.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And again, you can engage with it in a much
- 11:51Speaker 1: longer kind of format. It's not in just three hours.
- 11:54Speaker 1: They're not forcing everything back into it. There's no JK.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Simmons's evo shandor yes that's a thing that actually happened
- 12:01Speaker 1: and didn't need to happen for that matter. But you know,
- 12:04Speaker 1: Tron is one of those things where you know, the
- 12:07Speaker 1: source material wasn't something that people were banging on the
- 12:10Speaker 1: door to have anyways. It was a very small group
- 12:13Speaker 1: of people. And so you know, there was a sequel
- 12:16Speaker 1: video game that did really well that people kind of
- 12:18Speaker 1: vibed with. But again, it didn't move the needle enough
- 12:22Speaker 1: to make a movie. It took someone like Joseph Kazinski going,
- 12:25Speaker 1: all right, if we can get a concept trailer together
- 12:29Speaker 1: and launch it at the right place, which again Comic Con, Yeah,
- 12:32Speaker 1: is the right fucking place. You know. They were like,
- 12:35Speaker 1: let's let's do something with Tron, and let's just premiere
- 12:39Speaker 1: it at Comic Con, and let's see what the response
- 12:41Speaker 1: is and if the response is overwhelmingly positive and people
- 12:44Speaker 1: are you know, kind of you know, if the if
- 12:46Speaker 1: the needle moves, we'll do something with it. And the
- 12:49Speaker 1: needle move pretty substantially, I remember, you know, at the time,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and I again, I'm not as dialed into the pop
- 12:55Speaker 1: culture world as I used to be, but I still
- 12:57Speaker 1: try to be as much as I can, just you know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: for the sake of not trying to feel like an
- 13:01Speaker 1: old fuddy duddy, which you know, I mean again, I
- 13:03Speaker 1: feel like I'm fighting that at every step of the
- 13:06Speaker 1: step of my life. At this point, my girlfriend found
- 13:09Speaker 1: gray hairs in my temples, So you know, we're we
- 13:13Speaker 1: are we are now in the getting gray hairs aspect
- 13:16Speaker 1: of life, which is perfectly fine. I actually I welcome it.
- 13:19Speaker 1: But you know, I'm trying to fight the feeling like
- 13:22Speaker 1: an old, out of touch fuddy duddy. So I try
- 13:25Speaker 1: to keep in touch with the pop culture news of
- 13:28Speaker 1: the time. And you know, I remember Tron Legacy's teaser
- 13:33Speaker 1: trailer coming out and feeling it feeling important, it feeling
- 13:37Speaker 1: like a thing that was like, holy shit, Tron a
- 13:39Speaker 1: Tron sequel, And you know, again, it's one thing to
- 13:43Speaker 1: have a Tron sequel with Jeff Bridges coming back. You know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: say what you will about Garrett Headland. I actually like
- 13:50Speaker 1: Garrett Headland. I'm sure a lot of people get him
- 13:54Speaker 1: and Joel Kiddiman confused with one another, and I think
- 13:57Speaker 1: that's kind of unfair because Garrett Headlin has been in
- 14:00Speaker 1: a lot less things than Joel Kinneman in terms of
- 14:03Speaker 1: visibility for most people. Joel Kineman was in the Suicide
- 14:06Speaker 1: Squad recently. The last thing Garrett Headland was really in,
- 14:12Speaker 1: I mean the marsh King's Daughter featuring speaking of Star
- 14:15Speaker 1: Wars Daily, Daisy Ridley. Sure, and I know he was.
- 14:19Speaker 1: People have told me that he does a rather good
- 14:21Speaker 1: job in Inside Llewellyn Davis, but he hasn't really been
- 14:25Speaker 1: in anything as high profile as Tron Legacy, and in
- 14:29Speaker 1: a lot of ways, it feels like maybe Tron Legacy
- 14:31Speaker 1: kind of derailed his rise, and in a lot of
- 14:34Speaker 1: people's eyes, I don't actually think it did. In reality,
- 14:37Speaker 1: I think he is nowhere near the actual problem with
- 14:41Speaker 1: Tron Legacy. I think Tron Legacy is just not a
- 14:44Speaker 1: kind of focused script. I think it's just kind of
- 14:47Speaker 1: all over the place in in terms of a script,
- 14:50Speaker 1: in terms of a movie, in terms of a sequel
- 14:52Speaker 1: to a original product, that they're trying to get new
- 14:55Speaker 1: people in the door, because ultimately it should have been
- 14:58Speaker 1: more about getting new people in the door, and I
- 15:00Speaker 1: think it actually does a very good job of that
- 15:02Speaker 1: by crafting a new world around the original world of Tron.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I guess I just don't know how many people really
- 15:09Speaker 1: wanted that. And with what ends up happening now with
- 15:12Speaker 1: Tron Aries, the movie that just came out, which I
- 15:16Speaker 1: will be talking about and I will be trying not
- 15:19Speaker 1: to spoil, but let's just be honest here, I'm gonna
- 15:22Speaker 1: spoil it, so if you haven't seen it, I'm gonna
- 15:25Speaker 1: spoil it. I don't I mean, I think at this point,
- 15:28Speaker 1: it needs people going to see it pretty badly if
- 15:30Speaker 1: we're gonna get anything else Tron ever again. And it
- 15:35Speaker 1: kind of doesn't seem like we're gonna get anything else
- 15:38Speaker 1: Tron at this point, because I don't think there's any
- 15:39Speaker 1: amount of begging people to go see it that could
- 15:42Speaker 1: change the like one hundred million dollar deficit that the
- 15:46Speaker 1: movie is currently sitting at, because as of right now,
- 15:49Speaker 1: it has an estimated budget of one hundred and eighty
- 15:51Speaker 1: million dollars in a box office take of sixty nine
- 15:54Speaker 1: which is really bad. I mean that's like really bad.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Even the original movie didn't The original movie didn't even bomb.
- 16:02Speaker 1: The original sequel made double its money back, a little
- 16:07Speaker 1: bit more than double its money back. The budget was
- 16:09Speaker 1: one hundred and seventy million in the box office of
- 16:11Speaker 1: four hundred and nine million. I think a little bit
- 16:13Speaker 1: a bit of that was people being excited for a
- 16:16Speaker 1: Tron sequel. I think that the Tron teaser trailer helped.
- 16:20Speaker 1: I think the daft punk of it all actually really
- 16:22Speaker 1: helped as well. I think people weren't as jaded then
- 16:26Speaker 1: as they are now. I actually think Tron Aries will
- 16:29Speaker 1: in the long run find its audience. I actually think
- 16:32Speaker 1: Tron Aries is a pretty fun movie. I think it's
- 16:34Speaker 1: a fun movie. I don't think it needs to be
- 16:35Speaker 1: more than that. I think there's a lot of interesting
- 16:37Speaker 1: ideas in tron Aries. I know frequent collaborator Father Malone
- 16:42Speaker 1: did not want to see the real world of and Tron,
- 16:46Speaker 1: and we were joking about the pixels of it all
- 16:49Speaker 1: in in an offline conversation about Tron when we were
- 16:52Speaker 1: trying to figure out if we should cover Tron. Mike
- 16:55Speaker 1: White and Father Malone and I were debating covering Tron
- 16:58Speaker 1: and we couldn't make it happen. But I ended up
- 17:01Speaker 1: watching it myself, and so I wanted to talk about it.
- 17:04Speaker 1: But I do understand the I have no interest in
- 17:06Speaker 1: seeing the real world of Tron, the real world land
- 17:10Speaker 1: Tron rather and you know, I get it. I actually
- 17:13Speaker 1: think in Tron areas it's done rather well. It's done
- 17:16Speaker 1: kind of in an interesting way. It's not done in
- 17:18Speaker 1: the way that I was expecting. There's some kind of
- 17:21Speaker 1: weird arbitrary things like it only allowing twenty nine minutes
- 17:26Speaker 1: of lifespan on the you know, digitally created things, be
- 17:30Speaker 1: it tanks or aries, the kind of master control that
- 17:36Speaker 1: they can conjure into the real world the Master Control program.
- 17:39Speaker 1: So it's the reverse of the original two movies. They're
- 17:42Speaker 1: bringing programs into the real world as opposed to going
- 17:47Speaker 1: into the you know grid or the Dyllinger grid in
- 17:51Speaker 1: this movie, and I get it. I'm personally kind of
- 17:56Speaker 1: on board with it only because it's kind of it
- 17:58Speaker 1: had the opportunity to kind of be Terminator without being Terminator,
- 18:02Speaker 1: which again could have been interesting if given the opportunity
- 18:06Speaker 1: with and the right audience. But y'all, kim running just
- 18:09Speaker 1: I don't think was given a fair shake because the
- 18:12Speaker 1: movie wasn't supposed to be this. It was supposed to
- 18:15Speaker 1: be something else. It was supposed to be a movie
- 18:17Speaker 1: called tron Ascension, and that movie doesn't exist because Jared
- 18:22Speaker 1: Leto got involved and Jared Leto took over the project,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and because he was a producer, and because he's a producer,
- 18:31Speaker 1: they made the movie that he wanted to make, which
- 18:33Speaker 1: is this movie, which is tron Aries, and it's all
- 18:36Speaker 1: about the Aris character. The Aris character was not the
- 18:40Speaker 1: focus of the original script. The original script is more
- 18:45Speaker 1: kind of Aris as kind of a character in the script,
- 18:48Speaker 1: not the focus of the script, which is you know.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I mean, again, we've seen things like this before where
- 18:55Speaker 1: characters kind of you know, seem like they're not necessarily
- 18:59Speaker 1: supposed to be the focus of the movie and because
- 19:03Speaker 1: someone gets involved. I mean, you could make the case
- 19:05Speaker 1: that a movie like Morbius has no point existing the
- 19:08Speaker 1: way that it does other than the fact that Jared
- 19:10Speaker 1: Leto is in it. Morbius should have had a superhero
- 19:14Speaker 1: attached to him, because he's not a big enough character.
- 19:17Speaker 1: But yet the Jared Letto of it all, or again,
- 19:19Speaker 1: the Suicide Squad of it all, the Jared Letto of
- 19:22Speaker 1: the Suicide Squad, his involvement in the movie is actually
- 19:26Speaker 1: hurts the movie more than it helps it. And what's
- 19:28Speaker 1: funny is you could make the case that Jared Leto
- 19:31Speaker 1: hurts this franchise by being involved with it the way
- 19:34Speaker 1: he is, by producing the movie and saying, all right,
- 19:37Speaker 1: we're gonna do a movie about a character that, again,
- 19:41Speaker 1: I have an interest in playing, and so therefore I
- 19:45Speaker 1: want to be involved in the movie, and I want
- 19:47Speaker 1: him to have a bigger part. And because I want
- 19:49Speaker 1: to play this character, of course he has to have
- 19:51Speaker 1: a bigger part. And so the Jared Letto of it
- 19:53Speaker 1: all is now this is the focus of the movie.
- 19:56Speaker 1: It's the subtitle of the goddamn film tron Airy, which
- 20:00Speaker 1: is fine. However, if you don't vibe with Jared Leto,
- 20:04Speaker 1: you're not gonna vibe with this movie. And it's a
- 20:07Speaker 1: very Jared Leto performance, but in a way that I
- 20:11Speaker 1: actually kind of enjoyed. And it's a Jared Leto performance
- 20:14Speaker 1: in the sense that he goes full method acting on
- 20:18Speaker 1: the robot of it all, Like he really pulls off
- 20:21Speaker 1: I think the robot program, you know, can quickly access information,
- 20:27Speaker 1: is a sentient program. I mean, there's a little bit
- 20:29Speaker 1: of Evan rachel Wood from Westworld in there. Like there's
- 20:33Speaker 1: a lot of these kind of newer ideas with AI
- 20:36Speaker 1: and programs that Terminator kind of feels pass a when
- 20:39Speaker 1: those movies try to do it. And I actually think
- 20:41Speaker 1: that this movie does a better job of being Terminator
- 20:45Speaker 1: than Terminator recently has in terms of bridging the divide
- 20:49Speaker 1: between how do we have the real world and the
- 20:52Speaker 1: AI program world interact with each other in a way
- 20:55Speaker 1: that feels like there are actual stakes and that it
- 20:58Speaker 1: feels dangerous. That's the thing that this movie, because again
- 21:01Speaker 1: it's a Disney movie, doesn't really get at and it's
- 21:04Speaker 1: the part that I think could have actually really been interesting,
- 21:07Speaker 1: which is how fucking terrifying it is to have to
- 21:10Speaker 1: deal with the programs who are unfeeling uncaring, you know, again,
- 21:15Speaker 1: unable to do anything other than execute on their expectations
- 21:20Speaker 1: to the point of killing characters that don't deserve to die.
- 21:24Speaker 1: But again, like it proves a point of like, this
- 21:26Speaker 1: is what I'm expected to do. You're asked me to
- 21:28Speaker 1: do it, so I'm gonna do it. I mean, there's
- 21:30Speaker 1: a little bit of that or a lot of that
- 21:31Speaker 1: in tron Legacy with Clue, where Clue is asked to
- 21:34Speaker 1: do something and then you know, the chase for perfection
- 21:39Speaker 1: destroys the good and Clue and turns Clue evil because this,
- 21:43Speaker 1: you know, the the pursuit of perfection is inherently kind
- 21:46Speaker 1: of you know, you realize that if you're pursuing perfection,
- 21:50Speaker 1: sometimes you have to make decisions that aren't necessarily the
- 21:53Speaker 1: best one in the pursuit of something that may not
- 21:55Speaker 1: even be attainable, and the pursuit of perfection, you know,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I mean, look at someone like Thanos. You know, I
- 22:01Speaker 1: have to destroy half of the universe to save the universe, like, well,
- 22:04Speaker 1: that's great and all, but that doesn't have to be
- 22:07Speaker 1: the end all, be all best way to solve things.
- 22:11Speaker 1: And Clue and tron Legacy is the same thing. Clue
- 22:13Speaker 1: is essentially digital Hitler. He you know, wants to wipe
- 22:17Speaker 1: out all the programs that don't agree with his mindset
- 22:21Speaker 1: with that don't agree with his way of doing things,
- 22:24Speaker 1: that don't agree with the digital kind of frontier that
- 22:27Speaker 1: he's crafting, which again is the one that Jeff Bridges
- 22:32Speaker 1: as Kevin Flynn is asking him to craft. But it's
- 22:36Speaker 1: you know, it's not the way it was supposed to be.
- 22:39Speaker 1: It's not the future the way it's supposed to be.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Clue is gotten corrupted by the kind of attainment of
- 22:47Speaker 1: power because you know, Clu looks at the ISOs, the
- 22:52Speaker 1: kind of aberrant evolutions in the code as lesser than
- 22:58Speaker 1: and so the ISOs need to be wipe out. And
- 23:00Speaker 1: you know, the lesser than or different among us being
- 23:04Speaker 1: needing to be wiped out is very topical in twenty
- 23:08Speaker 1: twenty five, given the state of things, Given the state
- 23:11Speaker 1: of things and the feelings of people towards other people
- 23:14Speaker 1: for no fucking good reason, looking at you racist out there,
- 23:18Speaker 1: all of you racist. Clue is a digital racist. He
- 23:22Speaker 1: sees the supremacy of the code of the original idea
- 23:26Speaker 1: as it was written. There is no evolution, There is
- 23:29Speaker 1: no movement of the idea. There is no furtherance, There
- 23:32Speaker 1: is no evolution beyond the programming. The programming is. The
- 23:36Speaker 1: programming is the programming in any aberration outside of that
- 23:40Speaker 1: needs to be destroyed. It shouldn't be talked to or
- 23:43Speaker 1: looked at or even discussed. It needs to be erased
- 23:46Speaker 1: and wiped away. And that is very binary thinking, and
- 23:49Speaker 1: tron legacy is all about looking at the world through
- 23:53Speaker 1: non binary eyes and looking at the world through the
- 23:56Speaker 1: idea that the world doesn't need to have a decision
- 24:00Speaker 1: made of ones or zeros. You can have the world
- 24:04Speaker 1: existing outside of the code. The programming can be fought
- 24:07Speaker 1: the programming. You know, sometimes the programming in and of
- 24:10Speaker 1: itself creates aberrations that you don't exist. The isomorphic algorithms
- 24:15Speaker 1: that explain religion and again like explain everything. If you
- 24:20Speaker 1: transpose that onto our world, you know, there the explanations
- 24:24Speaker 1: of the supernatural world and the world that can never
- 24:28Speaker 1: be explained, and you know, the the dreams or the
- 24:32Speaker 1: human mind, you know, not operating at one hundred percent.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And you know what is what is the unlockable capacity
- 24:38Speaker 1: of the human mind? You know in tron Areas, you
- 24:40Speaker 1: know you can go into the code and have your
- 24:43Speaker 1: code you know, corrupted, code uncorrupted, which you know just
- 24:47Speaker 1: that you know the possibilities of that alone are you
- 24:50Speaker 1: and you know the idea behind that. You know, have
- 24:51Speaker 1: so many possibilities to push someone through a digitizer and
- 24:55Speaker 1: undigitize them, could fix any aberrations in their code, see
- 25:00Speaker 1: that as cancer or a tumor or you know, mental
- 25:03Speaker 1: health problems. I mean again, you know, the ability to
- 25:06Speaker 1: solve you know, schizophrenia at a cellular level would be
- 25:11Speaker 1: you know, the the franchise rights alone to speaking to
- 25:14Speaker 1: ghostblusters of it all. And tron Aris kind of verges
- 25:18Speaker 1: on those interesting ideas. I think tron Aris is interested
- 25:21Speaker 1: in other things. The idea of this movie, tron Legacy,
- 25:26Speaker 1: was probably more present in tront Ascension than it is
- 25:28Speaker 1: in tron Aris. Tron Arias is a lot more of
- 25:31Speaker 1: a violent movie about a violent a violent takeovers of
- 25:36Speaker 1: the code as it were, and given the state of things,
- 25:39Speaker 1: given the state of our world, right now, the fact
- 25:43Speaker 1: that this movie is red while the original movie is blue,
- 25:46Speaker 1: you know, coded blue and then coded red. H And
- 25:49Speaker 1: the fact that in Tron ares when you know, when
- 25:51Speaker 1: Aris turns good, he turns blue, or I guess more aptly,
- 25:55Speaker 1: he turns kind of blue white, depending on how you
- 25:58Speaker 1: can view the original costumes in the original Tron Legacy
- 26:02Speaker 1: or the Original Tron sequel, the white piping on the
- 26:05Speaker 1: costume that looks you know, kind of against blue blue
- 26:08Speaker 1: slash white versus the red or the orange that clues
- 26:11Speaker 1: wearing in the in legacy. You know, it's it's very
- 26:15Speaker 1: apropos of the times, maybe a little too on the
- 26:18Speaker 1: nose if you think about it. I tend not to
- 26:20Speaker 1: get super political on the things that I talk about,
- 26:23Speaker 1: but the idea of a hostile takeover of a company
- 26:28Speaker 1: from the outside by another company who is hell bent
- 26:32Speaker 1: on figuring out a code so that they can weaponize
- 26:35Speaker 1: the digital sphere, and you know, treat you know, expendable
- 26:40Speaker 1: code as expendable, even though there's a possibility that the
- 26:42Speaker 1: code is learning and thinking on its own, but it
- 26:46Speaker 1: is one hundred percent expendable. To quote the film, you know,
- 26:49Speaker 1: to quote Evan Peters, in the film as Julian Dillinger,
- 26:52Speaker 1: who you know, it's it's very obvious you couldn't get
- 26:54Speaker 1: Killian Murphy from tron Legacy, so you put you did
- 26:59Speaker 1: the next best thing, which is, oh, this is the
- 27:00Speaker 1: grandson of of David Warner's character from the original movie,
- 27:06Speaker 1: and Killian Murphy is the son of David Warner's character.
- 27:11Speaker 1: So this is Jillian Anderson. Is Killian Murphy's sister, question mark?
- 27:19Speaker 1: I mean, I guess so she must be. And we
- 27:22Speaker 1: never really hear anything about him. So like that that
- 27:28Speaker 1: that that creature, that meme creature that just has its
- 27:31Speaker 1: hands in the air, just doesn't know what to do.
- 27:33Speaker 1: That's that's what it feels like. I mean, Killian Murphy
- 27:36Speaker 1: won an Oscar, so he's he's too he's too high
- 27:40Speaker 1: high falutin to be in tron Aris. I'm sure that's
- 27:42Speaker 1: not what it is. I mean, I'm sure maybe Toronto
- 27:44Speaker 1: Sension had him in the script. And you know, again,
- 27:46Speaker 1: this this movie does feel a little bit if you
- 27:49Speaker 1: know the backstory, it does feel a little bit like
- 27:51Speaker 1: a Jared Leto Passion project. And you know, again, what's
- 27:55Speaker 1: weird is back in the day, something like toys with
- 27:58Speaker 1: Barry Levinson and Rob Williams feels more like a passion project,
- 28:02Speaker 1: like the fact that a passion project can now be
- 28:05Speaker 1: a IP, like a long standing, you know, forty three
- 28:10Speaker 1: year old IP like that is now what can be
- 28:13Speaker 1: considered a passion project is just putting yourself in a
- 28:16Speaker 1: fucking Tron movie. I mean, in a lot of ways,
- 28:18Speaker 1: people will you know, maybe scoff at this comparison, but
- 28:21Speaker 1: I think it's rather apt comparison. This in a lot
- 28:24Speaker 1: of ways is just spiral, but with Jared Leto instead
- 28:27Speaker 1: of Chris Rock. Yeah, spiral from the Book of Tron,
- 28:32Speaker 1: you know, you know, aries from the Book of Tron.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Like that, that's probably a better, better comparison. But like
- 28:39Speaker 1: this is really just like Chris Rock was like I
- 28:41Speaker 1: want to be in a Jigsaw movie, and Jared Leto's like,
- 28:44Speaker 1: I really like Tron for some reasonly. You know, I
- 28:47Speaker 1: couldn't tell you why Jared Leto likes Tron. I you know,
- 28:51Speaker 1: I will say that Jared Leto is fifty three fucking
- 28:54Speaker 1: years old, so he grew up in the eighties, so
- 28:58Speaker 1: you know, he's the right age for somebody you like
- 29:00Speaker 1: Tron obviously, and getting involved at the production level, you know,
- 29:06Speaker 1: means he must have some interest in Tron. Look, I
- 29:09Speaker 1: will say the visual imagery of Tron is still arresting.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Tron aris very arresting. Tron Legacy more arresting because Tron
- 29:19Speaker 1: Legacy is a a vibe movie, and Tron Legacy is
- 29:22Speaker 1: also be more. The whole fucking movie is in the grid.
- 29:25Speaker 1: You know. The thing about Tron areas that it suffers
- 29:28Speaker 1: from is the best parts of the movie are the
- 29:32Speaker 1: Grid or the other World, or or Flynn's Grid or
- 29:36Speaker 1: Dylander's grid, or however you want to perceive it. Whichever
- 29:39Speaker 1: grid that they're in. That's, you know, the visually interesting
- 29:43Speaker 1: part of the movie. But we're just not there enough.
- 29:45Speaker 1: And because we're not there enough, we you know, feel
- 29:49Speaker 1: more like, well, we're just watching a movie set in
- 29:51Speaker 1: the modern day kind of Seattle. I mean again, I'm
- 29:55Speaker 1: assuming it's in Seattle. It's probably it's it's set wherever
- 29:58Speaker 1: the original movie is set, which seems to be Seattle.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I'm assuming again. It looks like Pacific Northwest, so it
- 30:06Speaker 1: doesn't look particularly like anything other than a nondescript Pacific
- 30:11Speaker 1: Northwestern city. It's a city on the ocean, so there
- 30:15Speaker 1: you go, it's not anything interesting, and tron Legacy is
- 30:19Speaker 1: an interesting, visually arresting film, and that will always have
- 30:24Speaker 1: the edge over something like tron Aris. Like always, something
- 30:27Speaker 1: that's interesting to look at will always be more interesting,
- 30:30Speaker 1: just base than something that is not that is just
- 30:34Speaker 1: a movie that looks like other movies that you can
- 30:36Speaker 1: see again the tron areas of it all like the
- 30:39Speaker 1: Arias in the real world of it all, and the
- 30:41Speaker 1: tron in the real world of it all like, yes,
- 30:43Speaker 1: it's it's not what I would want. I would want
- 30:46Speaker 1: more of the Grid, as it were. I struggled to
- 30:49Speaker 1: think about what else they could have done on the Grid,
- 30:51Speaker 1: given that the whole last movie was said on the Grid,
- 30:53Speaker 1: but I hoped they could have come up with something interesting.
- 30:57Speaker 1: The original tron Legacy, you know, grid that we see
- 31:01Speaker 1: also feels a lot more grounded and real than the
- 31:03Speaker 1: one in Aries. Aries just does feel kind of like
- 31:06Speaker 1: a CGI set. Legacy doesn't feel like a CGI set
- 31:09Speaker 1: all the time that you know, at the end of
- 31:11Speaker 1: the line, Club Flynn's kind of shrine or where he lives,
- 31:15Speaker 1: those are all very real sets like those are all
- 31:18Speaker 1: very real places, and most of tron Aris just kind
- 31:21Speaker 1: of feels like CGI, which you know, I mean again
- 31:25Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, all right, Like there's like feels like
- 31:28Speaker 1: there's maybe three sets in tron Areas and that's it.
- 31:31Speaker 1: In Tron Legacy, it feels like there's a lot more
- 31:33Speaker 1: than that. But again, you know, things have changed. Times
- 31:36Speaker 1: have changed. You know, the expectations for franchises have changed.
- 31:39Speaker 1: We we can now do things without spending money on
- 31:43Speaker 1: real things that we're gonna have to deal with. We
- 31:45Speaker 1: can just you know, have a bunch of CGI Tron
- 31:48Speaker 1: disc warriors fighting you know, Dyllinger, Grid Sword, Darth Maul,
- 31:54Speaker 1: robot men, you know, program fighters. Like it's you know,
- 31:58Speaker 1: it's a lot of CGI. It's fun, it's big, it's bombastic.
- 32:02Speaker 1: But Tron Legacy I think tells a more interesting kind
- 32:05Speaker 1: of personal story. Tront Aries feels more like, again a
- 32:09Speaker 1: kind of an AI retelling of Terminator, And I'm not
- 32:14Speaker 1: saying like AI wrote it, but a focus on AI
- 32:17Speaker 1: versus robots. So you know, just replace the robots in
- 32:23Speaker 1: Terminator with AI and you kind of get tron. Tron
- 32:27Speaker 1: Legacy is more about the Kevin Flynn, Sam Flynn Cora
- 32:31Speaker 1: Clue relationship and the kind of the four of them
- 32:35Speaker 1: as it were interacting with one another, like you know,
- 32:39Speaker 1: this movie is more about Evan Peters's character kind of
- 32:43Speaker 1: taking over ncome by force and trying to figure out
- 32:48Speaker 1: a way to weaponize the grid because again the twenty
- 32:52Speaker 1: twenty five of it all, of course it's about you know,
- 32:54Speaker 1: weaponizing the tron technology or the grid technology. Of course
- 33:00Speaker 1: it's not. It's not what Jeff Bridges and tron Legacy
- 33:03Speaker 1: is all about, man, which is you know, the digital
- 33:06Speaker 1: frontier and solving you know, world hunger. You know, again,
- 33:10Speaker 1: the idea of putting someone into the grid and taking
- 33:12Speaker 1: them out and that fixing their DNA. You know, they
- 33:16Speaker 1: talk about it a little bit in tron areas, but
- 33:18Speaker 1: they just it's not it's not the focus of this movie.
- 33:20Speaker 1: The focus of this movie is Evan Peters being a
- 33:22Speaker 1: nasty bad guy and you know, trying to destroy Encom
- 33:27Speaker 1: so that he can make hundreds of billions of gazillions
- 33:30Speaker 1: of dollars on bringing Tron technology into the real world
- 33:34Speaker 1: to turn it into weapons and turn the you know,
- 33:37Speaker 1: digital soldiers that die and come back. I mean, it
- 33:39Speaker 1: is the West World of it all. Like what would
- 33:41Speaker 1: happen if you had a theme park where the people
- 33:42Speaker 1: could come and fight, you know, fight and fuck and
- 33:45Speaker 1: do whatever they wanted with things that looked like human
- 33:47Speaker 1: beings like Pete. There are some people that would pay
- 33:49Speaker 1: forty thousand dollars a day to go do it, which
- 33:52Speaker 1: is the price of Westworld to day. And you know,
- 33:54Speaker 1: that's kind of another direction you can go with something
- 33:57Speaker 1: like tron I mean, you could you could have had
- 33:59Speaker 1: people being digitized into the world of Tron to you know,
- 34:02Speaker 1: as a digital escape. You could sell that. I mean
- 34:04Speaker 1: that's another direction that you could go. But you know
- 34:07Speaker 1: the direction they went is the very you know, industrial
- 34:10Speaker 1: military complex of it all, where we're just gonna sell
- 34:13Speaker 1: you know, tanks to the highest bidder, which is the
- 34:16Speaker 1: opening scene with Evan Peters. You know, look at these
- 34:18Speaker 1: tanks that we have, and you know what's better than
- 34:20Speaker 1: the perfect tank the perfect soldier to drive it, who's
- 34:22Speaker 1: not really a soldier but a program so we feel
- 34:24Speaker 1: nothing for him. And again they're quote one expendable unquote.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I I don't dislike that or like that. I just
- 34:33Speaker 1: kind of feel like it's a little on the nose.
- 34:35Speaker 1: I mean, it's just we've seen this before. It's not
- 34:38Speaker 1: very interesting, it's not very original. Trom Legacy has some
- 34:41Speaker 1: interesting ideas. Tront Aris is just, I don't know, like
- 34:44Speaker 1: tront Aris in a lot of ways, just feels like
- 34:46Speaker 1: missing the point of what makes Tron so fun. And
- 34:49Speaker 1: you know, with something like Tron Legacy, to go back
- 34:52Speaker 1: to the kind of the place and time of it all,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I you know, I remember watching Tron Legacy at a
- 34:57Speaker 1: time where I didn't quite feel like an adult and
- 35:01Speaker 1: I didn't quite feel like I knew what my perception
- 35:04Speaker 1: of legacy was going to be or what legacy I
- 35:07Speaker 1: was going to leave. And you know, I have friends
- 35:08Speaker 1: now that have kids. You know, some of my friends,
- 35:11Speaker 1: close friends have two kids. You know, my roommate from
- 35:15Speaker 1: college has two kids now, two boys, a baby boy
- 35:18Speaker 1: and like a boy who's like a year year and
- 35:20Speaker 1: a half old. And that's you know, that's the beginning
- 35:23Speaker 1: of legacy. I mean, that's the beginning of his legacy.
- 35:26Speaker 1: And you know, my legacy in a lot of ways,
- 35:28Speaker 1: like I struggle with what my legacy will be if
- 35:31Speaker 1: I don't have children, And you know that's you know,
- 35:34Speaker 1: when you look at the character of Jeff Bridges and
- 35:36Speaker 1: Tron Legacy, he created clue you know, in spite of
- 35:39Speaker 1: the fact that he already had a son with Sam.
- 35:42Speaker 1: He has a son in Sam Flynn, and he creates
- 35:45Speaker 1: Clue anyways in the search of perfection because he wants
- 35:48Speaker 1: to make a perfect world, even though I mean again
- 35:50Speaker 1: he has a son, which he realizes in this movie, like,
- 35:53Speaker 1: you know, it's all about, you know, the people you
- 35:55Speaker 1: surround yourself with, not striving for perfection. It's all about
- 35:59Speaker 1: caring for the people that are in your life, not
- 36:01Speaker 1: ignoring them in search of, you know, the perfect world.
- 36:04Speaker 1: And you know, he misses out on a relationship with
- 36:06Speaker 1: Sam Flynn in search of the perfect world, in search
- 36:08Speaker 1: of the world. With Clue, he gets trapped in the
- 36:11Speaker 1: grid for twenty years and then you know, Sam comes
- 36:14Speaker 1: in to save him, and then he meets essentially the
- 36:17Speaker 1: the the child that his dad created or you know,
- 36:21Speaker 1: kind of raised in his stead, which is Quorra. And
- 36:24Speaker 1: Cora is a you know, an isomorphic so you know,
- 36:27Speaker 1: she is becoming sentient in isomorphic algorithm. So she's learning
- 36:33Speaker 1: on her own and becoming aware and self aware and
- 36:36Speaker 1: is getting emotions. And you know, we see that in
- 36:38Speaker 1: tron Ares with Jared Letto. He's it's a little bit.
- 36:42Speaker 1: It's a little bit more on the nose. In tron Aries,
- 36:44Speaker 1: it's a little bit more kind of blunt and less subtle.
- 36:47Speaker 1: I mean, in Toronto Legacy, we don't see it. We're
- 36:49Speaker 1: kind of told about it. In tront Areas, it just
- 36:51Speaker 1: kind of we see it all in kind of these
- 36:53Speaker 1: weird he's in the footage, Jared leto is or he's
- 36:57Speaker 1: in the server looking at the information and see kind
- 37:00Speaker 1: of the makeup of the the Eve Kim character, the
- 37:05Speaker 1: Grete Lee character, who actually, you know, I had not
- 37:08Speaker 1: seen her in anything, and I liked her a fair amount.
- 37:10Speaker 1: She's she's very good. She's a good opposite Jared Letto,
- 37:14Speaker 1: which is you know, again he kind of you know,
- 37:16Speaker 1: he he necessitates someone staying out of his way because
- 37:20Speaker 1: he's such a big presence in his own mind, at
- 37:22Speaker 1: least that's the way he wants to perceive himself. And
- 37:25Speaker 1: so the way he's going to book himself, as it were,
- 37:28Speaker 1: is as kind of the star of the show. And
- 37:30Speaker 1: I would say tron Aries very much so the star
- 37:33Speaker 1: of the show. And again for good and for bad,
- 37:37Speaker 1: and you know, I actually think the good barely outweighs
- 37:40Speaker 1: the bad, and this barely being the keyword. I again,
- 37:44Speaker 1: I actually vibe with Jared Leto and tront arias, which
- 37:47Speaker 1: I'm surprised by because I have not vibed with Jared
- 37:49Speaker 1: Letto in anything I've ever seen him in. In a
- 37:52Speaker 1: lot of ways, Jared Leedo is an actor I would
- 37:54Speaker 1: avoid if not for the It's morbid time of it all,
- 37:58Speaker 1: or if not for the tron I p of it all.
- 38:01Speaker 1: And you know, Jared Leto's legacy. It is tron Airies
- 38:06Speaker 1: at this point, which I find to be rather ironic
- 38:09Speaker 1: given the title of tron Legacy, you know, being you
- 38:12Speaker 1: know again, a movie about what legacy do we leave?
- 38:15Speaker 1: And how do we how do we protect our legacy?
- 38:18Speaker 1: You know, Jeff Bridges sacrifices himself in tron Legacy to
- 38:21Speaker 1: save his son and Quorra, and you know again, does
- 38:25Speaker 1: he die? We don't know. In tront Aries, Jeff Bridges
- 38:28Speaker 1: is back because of nostalgia. I don't Jeff Bridges is
- 38:31Speaker 1: back in tront Aries because they want to have Jared
- 38:33Speaker 1: Leto and Jeff Bridges share a scene together, which is fine,
- 38:36Speaker 1: but it doesn't really serve a purpose, and it honestly
- 38:39Speaker 1: opens more questions than it answers. So, you know, because
- 38:43Speaker 1: at the end of Tron Legacy, Jeff Bridges makes a
- 38:45Speaker 1: sacrifice to deal with Clue by reabsorbing him, by accepting
- 38:50Speaker 1: him and you know, bringing him back into the fold,
- 38:53Speaker 1: as it were. And I actually think it's rather poignant
- 38:55Speaker 1: ending to have the Creator kind of absorb the creation
- 38:58Speaker 1: and become one with the creation, to accept the creation
- 39:02Speaker 1: as you know, as not maybe one in one and
- 39:05Speaker 1: the same, but you know, as an extension of him.
- 39:07Speaker 1: And I like that about the movie. I like that
- 39:10Speaker 1: that's where it ends up going. But it is for
- 39:13Speaker 1: me disappointing that they felt the need to go back
- 39:17Speaker 1: to the well of Jeff Bridges and Tron Ares because
- 39:20Speaker 1: he's just it feels like such a digression in the movie.
- 39:24Speaker 1: But you know, the scene leading up to it's pretty
- 39:26Speaker 1: great because we get to see some you know, Jared
- 39:29Speaker 1: Leto in nineteen eighties Tron, and we get to see
- 39:32Speaker 1: nineteen eighties Tron faithfully remade through the magic of CGI,
- 39:37Speaker 1: which I actually found that part of the movie to
- 39:39Speaker 1: be rather charming. It's just I don't need to see
- 39:41Speaker 1: Jeff Bridges because it doesn't really do anything. It doesn't
- 39:44Speaker 1: really go anywhere the inclusion of Jeff. I would rather
- 39:47Speaker 1: have had Garrett Headlund in this movie than Jeff Bridges
- 39:50Speaker 1: because the question left at the end of Tron Legacy
- 39:53Speaker 1: is much more interesting than where this movie goes with
- 39:57Speaker 1: the remaining parts of Tron Legacy, which is the j
- 40:00Speaker 1: Bridges of it all. Like at the end of Tron Legacy,
- 40:02Speaker 1: the question of how does Kevin Flynn's legacy now become?
- 40:06Speaker 1: What is it? You know, what does it become in
- 40:08Speaker 1: the real world is such an interesting question because you
- 40:11Speaker 1: have his son and essentially his daughter and you know,
- 40:14Speaker 1: or you know, his surrogate daughter out in the real world,
- 40:18Speaker 1: and we don't know what that's going to mean. We
- 40:20Speaker 1: don't know if they're going to be together because again,
- 40:23Speaker 1: like they're not like biologically related, and what would that
- 40:26Speaker 1: mean if there's a could could there a human program
- 40:29Speaker 1: hybrid exist? And what are the ramifications of that? Which
- 40:33Speaker 1: is kind of the Blade Runner sequel, and you know,
- 40:36Speaker 1: none of those directions are gone and it's this is
- 40:38Speaker 1: you know, gone in a much more kind of obvious
- 40:41Speaker 1: direction with tront Aris, and you know, tront Ari should
- 40:44Speaker 1: have had the tagline of fight your programming because it
- 40:47Speaker 1: ends up being about a program becoming sentient, and we've
- 40:51Speaker 1: already seen that in Tron Legacy. We just didn't see
- 40:54Speaker 1: the journey because at that point, like even in twenty ten,
- 40:57Speaker 1: like we don't need to see the journey of this.
- 40:59Speaker 1: This journey has been on better in Terminator too, in
- 41:02Speaker 1: terms of just kind of getting to the point if
- 41:04Speaker 1: you're gonna do this kind of thing. But also, like
- 41:07Speaker 1: you know, with something like Westworld, you know, I would
- 41:11Speaker 1: contend that that's a better version of what this movie
- 41:14Speaker 1: is doing in terms of asking the question of, like
- 41:17Speaker 1: what happens when a program becomes sentient and aware of
- 41:21Speaker 1: its programming as it were, you know, I just I
- 41:23Speaker 1: think Tron Areas is just asking questions that aren't particularly
- 41:28Speaker 1: interesting in the world of Tron, not because they're not interesting,
- 41:32Speaker 1: but because the questions have already been answered and they're
- 41:35Speaker 1: just retreading them. At this point. It's not interesting to
- 41:38Speaker 1: retread old ground when there's so much new ground to
- 41:41Speaker 1: tread and there's so many new ideas you could go with.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Because again, like the programs in the real world is
- 41:47Speaker 1: essentially where this movie ends, which is essentially where the
- 41:49Speaker 1: last movie ended. So this movie honestly just feels like
- 41:52Speaker 1: a complete retcon of the last. This feels like, you know,
- 41:55Speaker 1: a sequel to Tron, not a sequel to Tron Legacy,
- 41:59Speaker 1: like Tron Legacy existed outside of this movie. Because the
- 42:04Speaker 1: only thing that this movie kind of addresses in terms
- 42:06Speaker 1: of Tron Legacy is He's missing. He being Kevin Flynn.
- 42:10Speaker 1: You know, Sam Flynn has mentioned in tron Aries, but
- 42:13Speaker 1: we don't see him. We don't see him or Coorra,
- 42:16Speaker 1: which is such a missed opportunity. And again, judging by
- 42:19Speaker 1: the immense financial loss that this movie is kind of absorbing,
- 42:25Speaker 1: we're probably not gonna see any more Tron anything. You know,
- 42:28Speaker 1: the Tron TV show, the cartoon that was kind of
- 42:32Speaker 1: so well regarded that came out in between Tron Legacy
- 42:36Speaker 1: and Tron Aris, a cartoon that you know, so many
- 42:39Speaker 1: people have told me about. You know, Uprising is the
- 42:43Speaker 1: best Tron thing, is what I've been told. You know,
- 42:46Speaker 1: I think Tron Legacy is still very good. I actually
- 42:48Speaker 1: think Tron Legacy works better now because of Tron Aries,
- 42:52Speaker 1: because of all these Legacy sequels that have come out
- 42:54Speaker 1: that aren't as good or as interesting as Tron Legacy.
- 42:57Speaker 1: I think Tron Legacy stands above those those other Legacy sequels,
- 43:02Speaker 1: and Tron Legacy, I think visually is still interesting. I
- 43:04Speaker 1: think tron Aries just it feels very much like a
- 43:08Speaker 1: Tron movie made in the post MCU world, where it's
- 43:12Speaker 1: all kind of CGI and very slick and very well
- 43:17Speaker 1: crafted and well maintained. Like Tron Legacy, a lot of
- 43:20Speaker 1: those sets were real. They were real sets that were
- 43:23Speaker 1: crafted by real people, and they looked really good. This
- 43:27Speaker 1: movie is all CGI and it just kind of feels hollow,
- 43:31Speaker 1: and it feels kind of like a you know, hollow
- 43:33Speaker 1: retelling of a much more interesting story, which this movie
- 43:36Speaker 1: kind of is. This is essentially just Tron Legacy reversed,
- 43:40Speaker 1: you know, Tron Legacy, you know, reverse Uno edition, like
- 43:44Speaker 1: you know, literally, you know, instead of you know, Garrett
- 43:47Speaker 1: Headland going to the grid, we have Jared Leto coming
- 43:49Speaker 1: to the real world. You know, instead of Quorra becoming
- 43:52Speaker 1: a real girl, we have Tron Aris becoming a real girl. So,
- 43:55Speaker 1: you know, the Garrett Headland and Cora characters from Tron
- 43:59Speaker 1: Legacy are just turned in to one with Aries in
- 44:01Speaker 1: this movie. You know, it's it's such a missed opportunity.
- 44:05Speaker 1: And I think that you know, the people that weren't
- 44:08Speaker 1: interested in Tron the first time definitely aren't interested this time.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And I also think that maybe you've hit the point
- 44:16Speaker 1: of people who would be interested in Tron not being
- 44:20Speaker 1: interested anymore, because, you know, fifteen years in terms of
- 44:23Speaker 1: pop culture relevancy is a long time, and I'm not
- 44:26Speaker 1: sure how many fifteen year olds would be going to
- 44:29Speaker 1: see tron Aries. And the problem is, this movie does
- 44:33Speaker 1: have things going for it that should make it mainstream interesting.
- 44:37Speaker 1: It does have dared Letto, who has mainstream appeal. It
- 44:40Speaker 1: does have the inclusion of Jeff Bridges, who you know,
- 44:43Speaker 1: still moves the needle for some people. But I think
- 44:45Speaker 1: the thing that this movie has that you know, is
- 44:47Speaker 1: probably the most mainstream thing of all, is the Nine
- 44:51Speaker 1: Inch Nails soundtrack, which, you know, I think a lot
- 44:55Speaker 1: of people with Tron Legacy kind of pooh pooh the
- 44:57Speaker 1: movie and go. But it does a good soundtrack, So
- 44:59Speaker 1: it's a crappy movie with a good soundtrack. It's like, okay,
- 45:02Speaker 1: you know what, Tron Legacy is actually a good movie
- 45:05Speaker 1: with a great soundtrack. Tront Aries is an okay movie
- 45:09Speaker 1: with an amazing soundtrack. I think in a lot of ways,
- 45:12Speaker 1: Nine Inch Nails works really well for the violent nature
- 45:15Speaker 1: of tron Aris, because Toronto Areas is a much more
- 45:17Speaker 1: violent movie. At one point, you have Evan Peters just
- 45:20Speaker 1: asking for the Grete Lee character to be killed in
- 45:24Speaker 1: the grid so that her body can't be found in
- 45:27Speaker 1: the real world, which is fucking nuts. Again in a
- 45:29Speaker 1: Disney movie, that's pretty sadistic. And I like the violent
- 45:32Speaker 1: red nature of the movie and how it's reflected in
- 45:35Speaker 1: the Nine Inch Nail soundtrack. I just don't think that
- 45:38Speaker 1: the movie reaches the heights that the soundtrack hits, and
- 45:41Speaker 1: that's you know, it's a shame because the soundtrack is
- 45:45Speaker 1: really good. I mean as alive as you need me
- 45:49Speaker 1: to be. The single is really good. All of the
- 45:53Speaker 1: you know, non dialogue music is really good. Like it's
- 45:57Speaker 1: again like tron Legacy with the the daft punk soundtrack,
- 46:01Speaker 1: which I mean daft Punk even shows up in the
- 46:03Speaker 1: end of line Club, which I think, undoubtedly for me,
- 46:06Speaker 1: is probably the best part of tron Legacy. With Michael Sheen,
- 46:09Speaker 1: who is just playing a character from another movie. Literally,
- 46:14Speaker 1: you know, he brings the hamminess of the Marravngian from
- 46:17Speaker 1: the Matrix with the kind of the pomp of in
- 46:21Speaker 1: a lot of ways. Michael, the character Michael Sheen plays
- 46:23Speaker 1: in Twilight. I mean it's just he's hamming it up,
- 46:26Speaker 1: like really like hamming it up, like in the merrivngiin
- 46:29Speaker 1: and the Matrix isn't even hamming it up that much.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Like he's hamming it up, and like he's like David
- 46:33Speaker 1: Bowie adjacent, like he's unhidden. And you know, he's also
- 46:38Speaker 1: the Lando Calrisian of the movie, where you know, he
- 46:41Speaker 1: baits our characters in by thinking, you know, all, I'm
- 46:43Speaker 1: the I'm the underground leader of the resistance, but it
- 46:46Speaker 1: turns out I'm actually selling you out because I'm playing
- 46:48Speaker 1: both sides. It's like, okay, like that's interesting. But then
- 46:52Speaker 1: he just dies, and it's again, feels like I missed
- 46:55Speaker 1: opportunity that we get such an interesting character for like
- 46:58Speaker 1: thirty seconds in the movie, is what it feels like.
- 47:00Speaker 1: But you know, probably too much of a good thing
- 47:03Speaker 1: would probably be too much, and his character, if they
- 47:05Speaker 1: did too much of it would be a lot because
- 47:08Speaker 1: he is overwritten. But an overwritten character in a movie
- 47:12Speaker 1: like Tron Legacy that feels kind of like a vibe
- 47:15Speaker 1: movie and not necessarily just like the aggressive film that
- 47:20Speaker 1: Aries is. Like, you know, when you have a character
- 47:22Speaker 1: like that introduced in the movie, it does kind of
- 47:24Speaker 1: stand out, but you know, sometimes in a bad way.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I don't think Michael Sheen stands out in a bad way.
- 47:29Speaker 1: I think he's he's a fun character. That being said,
- 47:31Speaker 1: tron Aris does have some you know again, Jullian Anderson
- 47:35Speaker 1: is overacting as Killian Murphy's sister, you know, David Warner's daughter. Yeah,
- 47:44Speaker 1: she's she's hamming it up. I like where she's kind
- 47:47Speaker 1: of bringing things kind of in and what her kind
- 47:51Speaker 1: of feelings are. Jodie Turner Smith also very good. Her
- 47:55Speaker 1: kind of energy is very aggressive. I will say like
- 47:59Speaker 1: tron Aries is a aggressive movie and and you know,
- 48:02Speaker 1: again in a way that you know, some people may
- 48:04Speaker 1: not vibe with. But I I really like the kind
- 48:08Speaker 1: of the sensibility of tron Aries in terms of what
- 48:11Speaker 1: it's going for. I just don't think it executes it
- 48:13Speaker 1: very well. I think tron Ares executes on its ideas
- 48:16Speaker 1: of kind of the digital grid man and you know,
- 48:19Speaker 1: we're we're trying to change the world. You know, we're
- 48:21Speaker 1: it's the Uprising, and you know, we're fighting back against
- 48:24Speaker 1: the evil Empire, and you know, it feels very Star Wars.
- 48:27Speaker 1: You know, I mean again to go back to the
- 48:28Speaker 1: Lando Kelisian of it all. But you know, I feel
- 48:33Speaker 1: like tron Legacy just probably came out a couple of
- 48:34Speaker 1: years too early in a lot of ways. You know,
- 48:36Speaker 1: it does a better job of being the Force Awakens
- 48:39Speaker 1: than The Force Awakens ever could have because tron Legacy
- 48:42Speaker 1: is more irreverent with the source material than Tron Aries is.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Like tron Aris just kind of goes back to tron
- 48:50Speaker 1: Legacy and uses it as the source material and just
- 48:53Speaker 1: retells a lot of in a lot of ways, the
- 48:55Speaker 1: Quorra story from Tron Legacy, like tron Aris isn't really
- 48:59Speaker 1: doing a lot of new things. And again it is
- 49:01Speaker 1: kind of just doing the Terminator story as well, Terminator two,
- 49:04Speaker 1: Terminator one, and Terminator two rolled into one. Tron Legacy
- 49:08Speaker 1: just you know, it's more Prometheus, less Alien Covenant, and
- 49:10Speaker 1: tron Areas is a little bit more Covenant, a little
- 49:13Speaker 1: less Prometheus, like tron Legacy just is asking more interesting questions,
- 49:16Speaker 1: and it's posing more interesting questions, and it's posing a
- 49:19Speaker 1: more interesting direction to take the franchise. I'd also like
- 49:24Speaker 1: to point out if you had a d d resin
- 49:26Speaker 1: gun or a d you know, a laser, a particle laser,
- 49:30Speaker 1: and you could just zap people into the grid, why
- 49:32Speaker 1: wouldn't you just use that to as technology to just
- 49:35Speaker 1: zap people away into the digital grid and then just
- 49:37Speaker 1: kill them in there, and then you'd never have to
- 49:39Speaker 1: worry like or use it for just like trash removal
- 49:42Speaker 1: and be the world's biggest trash removal company because you
- 49:45Speaker 1: just d res garbage. Like again, it's you know, the
- 49:47Speaker 1: military application is great, but the military application is not
- 49:50Speaker 1: the easiest way to make money. And if that's what
- 49:52Speaker 1: Evan Peters is trying to do is make money, there's
- 49:55Speaker 1: easier ways to do it, especially if you have essentially,
- 49:57Speaker 1: you know, a digital black hole like Homer finds in
- 50:01Speaker 1: that Treehouse of Horrors episode. I mean, it's it seems
- 50:04Speaker 1: like an awful waste of such a useful tool to
- 50:08Speaker 1: just be like, well, I can make a digital tank
- 50:10Speaker 1: that I can then have it go room room and
- 50:12Speaker 1: blow shit up, like or you could just zap your
- 50:14Speaker 1: enemies into the grid and then have them murdered and
- 50:16Speaker 1: they would never even know what happened. No one would
- 50:18Speaker 1: know what happened they would disappear without a trace, which
- 50:21Speaker 1: is what happened to Jeff Bridges in the second movie.
- 50:24Speaker 1: So it's like the ideas right there, and they just
- 50:26Speaker 1: kind of roof miss it. They're not interested in telling
- 50:29Speaker 1: that story. And that's the Jared Letto of it all.
- 50:31Speaker 1: And that, for me, is the thing about tron Areas
- 50:35Speaker 1: that I don't like, which is that Jared Leto's influence
- 50:38Speaker 1: is at a cellular level with the movie, and he
- 50:42Speaker 1: kind of makes it all about him, and he ignores
- 50:45Speaker 1: the interesting questions that the last movie poses because he
- 50:48Speaker 1: wants to do the Pinocchio story in twenty twenty five.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Like brother, I get it, no, no, But I think
- 50:54Speaker 1: that this is also to speak of legacy and to
- 50:56Speaker 1: speak of marking the end of an era, because again,
- 50:59Speaker 1: you know, I saw tron Legacy before I was married,
- 51:02Speaker 1: and I saw tron aries not only after I was married,
- 51:06Speaker 1: but after all three of my dogs passed away, because
- 51:08Speaker 1: most recently two weeks ago, my first dog that I
- 51:14Speaker 1: ever got on my own passed away as the last
- 51:18Speaker 1: of the three dogs that I had with my ex wife,
- 51:21Speaker 1: and a very traumatic, kind of heart heartbreaking way, and
- 51:25Speaker 1: you know it obviously it affected me immensely because as
- 51:28Speaker 1: someone who has no compunction to be a parent, you know,
- 51:31Speaker 1: at least of a human child, your children, if you
- 51:35Speaker 1: are a you know, a parent of animals are your animals,
- 51:39Speaker 1: and so to lose them is very traumatic as it is,
- 51:42Speaker 1: but you know, to go suddenly is also not great either,
- 51:45Speaker 1: and it was rather sudden, and it was rather traumatic.
- 51:48Speaker 1: And you know, then I went and watched Tron Aries
- 51:51Speaker 1: and I was like, wow, the last time I saw
- 51:53Speaker 1: a Tron movie on the big screen was when I
- 51:57Speaker 1: was a single guy in my early twenties, just recovering
- 52:01Speaker 1: from the most traumatic thing that had happened to me then,
- 52:04Speaker 1: which I mean need pales and combarisson to the things
- 52:06Speaker 1: that have happened now, especially just in the last year.
- 52:10Speaker 1: But it feels like again, like the end of an era,
- 52:12Speaker 1: because you know, Jared Leto will not be the lead
- 52:15Speaker 1: of a franchise anytime soon, if ever again. I think
- 52:19Speaker 1: his commercial viability is over, and I think that, you know,
- 52:23Speaker 1: he should probably stick to smaller projects because I don't
- 52:26Speaker 1: know if he has the drawing power anymore that he
- 52:29Speaker 1: used to, and I wonder if he ever did. And
- 52:31Speaker 1: I don't want to poo pooh his popularity, because I
- 52:33Speaker 1: know he is popular, and I don't think he's a
- 52:35Speaker 1: bad actor. I just think he's a little bit like
- 52:37Speaker 1: Nick Cage. The flavor of ice cream that he is
- 52:40Speaker 1: is not a flavor of ice cream for everyone, and
- 52:42Speaker 1: that is okay. You know, he's not my flavor of
- 52:45Speaker 1: ice cream, per se. I try that ice cream every
- 52:48Speaker 1: now and then, but I am reminded that it's not
- 52:50Speaker 1: necessarily something I would or go out of my way
- 52:53Speaker 1: to order. But Tron Legacy is a flavor of ice
- 52:56Speaker 1: cream that I would order over and over and over again.
- 52:59Speaker 1: And I honestly, they will probably have Tron Legacy in
- 53:02Speaker 1: rotation again with the things that I watch, because I
- 53:06Speaker 1: it's kind of it's a it's a comfort movie for
- 53:09Speaker 1: me in a lot of ways, like it reminds me
- 53:11Speaker 1: of a time and a place that is very much
- 53:14Speaker 1: different than now. But I but I can remember specifically
- 53:17Speaker 1: the time and place of Tron Legacy and the world
- 53:20Speaker 1: that that movie came out in and the kind of
- 53:23Speaker 1: hope of that world. But at the same time, you know,
- 53:26Speaker 1: you know, if you watch the beginning of Tron Legacy,
- 53:28Speaker 1: there's a very cynical scene with Killey and Murphy, where
- 53:30Speaker 1: you know, they're like, well, you know, what's the new
- 53:33Speaker 1: operating system that makes it different. It's like, well, nothing
- 53:35Speaker 1: other than it's got the number twelve attached to it.
- 53:37Speaker 1: And it's like, these are the bastards that Tron Legacy
- 53:40Speaker 1: warned us about, and in tront Ares, the bastards have won,
- 53:43Speaker 1: and now we get to see the bastards fighting one
- 53:45Speaker 1: another because you know, yes, Greta Lee is this is
- 53:49Speaker 1: a altruistic CEO, but she's also still the CEO of Encom,
- 53:54Speaker 1: which is a more altruistic company than Dillinger Systems, but
- 53:59Speaker 1: it's still a massive company which is undoubtedly doing harm.
- 54:03Speaker 1: So you know, it's hard to feel like this is
- 54:05Speaker 1: anything other than Tron Game of Thrones, you know, and
- 54:09Speaker 1: in a lot of ways, you know, they had to
- 54:10Speaker 1: write the Greteli character as the hero, and if this
- 54:13Speaker 1: were a story not being told by Disney, there might
- 54:16Speaker 1: be a little bit more nuance to the character and
- 54:19Speaker 1: a little bit more acknowledgment of the fact that these
- 54:21Speaker 1: are just two massive corporations fighting for the ability to
- 54:24Speaker 1: make money. They're both looking to make money. They're just
- 54:27Speaker 1: looking to make money in two different ways. The permanence
- 54:29Speaker 1: code that would allow the programs from the digital world
- 54:34Speaker 1: to stay in the real world for longer, if not permanently.
- 54:38Speaker 1: It is an idea that will be exploited by either
- 54:40Speaker 1: side for profit. Either way, one is just a little
- 54:44Speaker 1: bit more unpalatable than the other, but they're still trying
- 54:47Speaker 1: to profit off of it. So it's you know, it's
- 54:50Speaker 1: very much a movie of the times, you know, tron
- 54:53Speaker 1: Legacy is kind of a movie of hope and uprising,
- 54:56Speaker 1: of hope of the future, of a future that's hopeful
- 54:59Speaker 1: that you you know, we can we can shirk the
- 55:01Speaker 1: CGI Jeff Bridges of the world and live in a
- 55:05Speaker 1: world where isometric you know, are isomorphic programs, you know,
- 55:09Speaker 1: the the the the ones amongst us that are different
- 55:13Speaker 1: can live in peace and harmony with those amongst us
- 55:16Speaker 1: that aren't different or don't feel different. You know that
- 55:20Speaker 1: that world is so novel now and feels a little
- 55:24Speaker 1: naive now in retrospect, but you know, that's what the
- 55:28Speaker 1: world of tron Legacy. Maybe that's why I like tron
- 55:30Speaker 1: Legacy so much, is it's a world I'd like to
- 55:32Speaker 1: live in. I'd like to go back to twenty ten,
- 55:34Speaker 1: you know, and try again, like Tron Legacy, does you
- 55:37Speaker 1: know show us that you know, even if you do
- 55:39Speaker 1: disappear for twenty years, you do get a second chance.
- 55:42Speaker 1: But you know, tron areas is that is the second
- 55:44Speaker 1: chance that the Tron franchise gets. But it's a second
- 55:47Speaker 1: chance not being done. I don't know, it's just not
- 55:50Speaker 1: being done with the best intentions in mind. It's being done,
- 55:55Speaker 1: you know, for less than I wouldn't say altruistic reasons,
- 55:58Speaker 1: because anytime you make a movie, it's something unfraultristic reasons,
- 56:01Speaker 1: but it's something done for the right reasons. If this
- 56:03Speaker 1: is Tron Ascension, maybe we'd be having a different conversation.
- 56:05Speaker 1: But this is tron Aris. This is Jared Leto's Tron.
- 56:08Speaker 1: This is the movie Jared Leto wanted to make, And that,
- 56:11Speaker 1: for me will always be the problem with tron Aris.
- 56:15Speaker 1: That will always be the issue with a movie like
- 56:17Speaker 1: Tron Aries is that it's not really a Tron movie
- 56:22Speaker 1: in the way that the last movie was, in the
- 56:25Speaker 1: way that the last movie was a movie made by
- 56:27Speaker 1: people that loved Tron in the right way. I think
- 56:31Speaker 1: Jared Letto loved the ideas of Tron, but I don't
- 56:33Speaker 1: think Jared Leto cares about the world of Tron the
- 56:37Speaker 1: way that you know, Joseph Kazinski of directing Tron Legacy does.
- 56:42Speaker 1: And you know that movie made four hundred million dollars
- 56:45Speaker 1: in retrospect. That was a much bigger success than tron Aris.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Tron Aris is a flop, and in a lot of ways,
- 56:51Speaker 1: it's a massive flop, and it's a flop that's going
- 56:54Speaker 1: to end the Tron franchise, which you know will be
- 56:57Speaker 1: held against Jared Leto by Tron fans for and rightfully.
- 57:01Speaker 1: So if you make it a point to make this
- 57:03Speaker 1: movie and you want to make it about yourself and
- 57:05Speaker 1: it's not a success, you should bear that burden. I mean,
- 57:08Speaker 1: the Rock bared the burden of destroying the DC universe.
- 57:11Speaker 1: You know, I just don't think there's a you know,
- 57:13Speaker 1: James gunn to save Tron, because I don't think Tron
- 57:16Speaker 1: is an ip that people care about the same way
- 57:20Speaker 1: that they care about d C. Because Tron is its
- 57:23Speaker 1: own thing, to quote David S. Pumpkins, it's very much
- 57:27Speaker 1: its own thing, which I think makes it a worthwhile
- 57:30Speaker 1: franchise to worry about, and it's a worthwhile franchise to
- 57:34Speaker 1: make sure exists because it is a homegrown franchise, because
- 57:37Speaker 1: it is a franchise that comes from Stephen Lisberger and
- 57:41Speaker 1: Bonnie mcbird. Two people made this and it's just them,
- 57:44Speaker 1: like and you know, the original movie, they waited twenty
- 57:48Speaker 1: five years, you know, the original movie. They waited a
- 57:51Speaker 1: long time to make the sequel to that movie. And
- 57:54Speaker 1: I don't think there will be anything after tron Aries,
- 57:56Speaker 1: and if there will be, it will be a long time,
- 57:59Speaker 1: and they may ignore this movie. I hope that we
- 58:02Speaker 1: get more after this, but this does feel like the
- 58:05Speaker 1: end of an era. And you know, it's weird to
- 58:07Speaker 1: me that the end of an era for me in
- 58:11Speaker 1: terms of you know, like kind of the last thing
- 58:14Speaker 1: from my previous life in terms of relationships big ones
- 58:19Speaker 1: was the one with my own dog, Nibbler, who passed away,
- 58:24Speaker 1: came the same week that tron Ares came out, which again,
- 58:27Speaker 1: tron Legacy is a movie that I kind of look
- 58:29Speaker 1: to and remember is kind of a point in time
- 58:32Speaker 1: that was right before kind of my life changed so dramatically,
- 58:35Speaker 1: and my life has changed dramatically now in the last
- 58:39Speaker 1: you know, year, year and a half. So it's just
- 58:41Speaker 1: you know, Tron and tron Legacy, you know, and tron
- 58:44Speaker 1: aris just feel like three movies of a very specific time,
- 58:48Speaker 1: of a very specific place that you know, especially with
- 58:51Speaker 1: tron Legacy, like I'd like to live in that world again,
- 58:54Speaker 1: just to be you know, given the opportunity to do better,
- 58:57Speaker 1: because you know, the world of tron Legacy, at the end,
- 58:59Speaker 1: it's all about doing better. It's all about being hopeful.
- 59:02Speaker 1: And you know, there's a program in the real world
- 59:04Speaker 1: and what does that mean for humanity? And we can
- 59:07Speaker 1: you know, against our better you know, vices do better
- 59:10Speaker 1: because now we have you know, the perfect walking amongst us. Nope, Nope,
- 59:14Speaker 1: tron Arias is about the violent takeover of a corporation
- 59:17Speaker 1: by another corporation. How twenty twenty five? Huh? And how
- 59:21Speaker 1: I mean not how you know, just how how kind
- 59:24Speaker 1: of sad really that that's the real world is so reflective?
- 59:28Speaker 1: You know, the bastards won, you know, the Dillingers in
- 59:30Speaker 1: the world won. And you know, I actually think it's
- 59:33Speaker 1: a little disappointing that tron Areas leaves us with such
- 59:36Speaker 1: a good cliffhanger because Evan Peters dressed up as David
- 59:39Speaker 1: Warner's Sark from tron is a great visual, even if
- 59:43Speaker 1: it does seem a little out of place with the
- 59:45Speaker 1: rest of the visuals of the movie. But I really
- 59:48Speaker 1: really like the visual of Evan Peters dressed up as
- 59:51Speaker 1: Sark and I don't think we're gonna have We're never
- 59:53Speaker 1: gonna get anything more of that, which is a shame
- 59:56Speaker 1: I feel, because I feel like that's an interesting direction
- 59:59Speaker 1: to go. It's it's kind of amusing to me that
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: the gentleman who directed tron Aries Yo Kim Running was
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: also the director of another movie who has a kind
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: of hanging thread that would have been a lot more
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: interesting than the movie we get, that movie being Pirates
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: of the Caribbean, dead Men Tell No Tales, another Disney
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: movie which ends with Davy Jones coming back and Will
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: Turner and and this whole kind of it's very, very
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: much the finale to the original three movies that you
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: never knew you wanted but got, And then they have
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: this kind of cliffhanger at the end of the movie
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: that hints at something a lot more interesting happening, but
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: we're not getting that because Pirates of the Caribbean is
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: being rebooted, so and we'll never get it now, and
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: you know, Yo Kim Running directed that movie. Tron Aries
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: will probably never get to see Evan Peters, you know,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: making good as Sark, but I think it's very interesting
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: to have him going into the digital world at the
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: end of the movie and becoming you know, Sark, you know,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: two point zero. So I'm I'm disappointed what tron Aris
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: is because of the Jared Leto of it all, but
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: I actually like Jared Letto in it a fair bit
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: more than I ever have in anything else. It's just
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: because of Jared Letto, we're probably not getting any more
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: tron And what a shame, because there are some interesting
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: ideas in tront Aris, but I think the interesting ideas
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: of tron Legacy were more interesting. So go with those,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: follow those through lines. Make tron ascension. Don't cowtow to us,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: you know, a big name celebrity just because they're a
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: big name celebrity and you know, that's tron Ares, which
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: you know, it's fine, but not when it fails and
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: bombs as hard as this movie has. Because this movie
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: bombed pretty hard compared even to the perception of tron Legacy,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: which didn't bomb. So you know, again, tron Ari's bombed.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Tron Legacy did not bomb. Tron Legacy is a better
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: movie than anyone remembers. So go rewatch Tron Legacy because
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Tron Legacy kind of like Prometheus deserves a rewatch because
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: it's it's more interesting questions and it's doing more interesting things.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: And you know, tron Aris and Alien Covenant have a
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: lot in common in terms of robots trying to and
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: wanting to feel like real people and you know, feeling
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: like human beings and feeling like, well, you know, what
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: does it mean for a robot to have emotions or
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: not have emotions? Because you know, in Alien Covenant, it's
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: all about Walter and David, and David has the emotions
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: limited in Walter, you know, you know, and then he
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: you know, Walter had emotions limited and David didn't. So
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: you know, tron Aries is about a program becoming a
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: real boy. It's like all these ideas have been exploited
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: before by other people in much more interesting ways, and that,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: for me feels like the kind of the worst part
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: of tron is like it just doesn't feel like Tron
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: in a lot of ways. It feels like something else,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: and something else not as well written as those other
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: things even are. Tron Legacy had some some great cross
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: promotional stuff. It had a pinball machine, It had a
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Didas merchandise that glowed in the dark. It had a
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: the disc, the data disc. You could buy the Blu
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: ray of the movie and it came with the data
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: disc that the Blu rays were, and it was like
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: a whole thing, like the whole The original sequel was
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: so overbranded in a way that was like, you know,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: now we get all the tron merchandising like it was.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: It was. It was a thing. Tron Legacy was a
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: thing tron Aris is not, and I think that they
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: were expecting it. It was going to be, and it's
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: just a shame that it wasn't, because you know, I
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: think a lot of people that were involved with tront
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Aris tried, you know, Trent Resnor and Atticus Ross amongst them.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: You know Yokim running as well, but you know, the
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Jared Letto of it all just gets in the way.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: And boy, what a shame, because yeah, for once, I'm
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: actually not complaining about Jared Leto's acting. I'm actually just
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: complaining about Jared Leto the person, which is a shame
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: because if you want to take that mantle on yourself.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: You have to be responsible for these successes and the failures.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: And this is a pretty big financial failure. And Jared Leto's,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: you know, not going to be the lead in a
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: big Hollywood blockbuster for a while if ever again, no
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: matter how good he looks at fifty three. So I'm
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: I'm hesitant for anything else Tron to come out because
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: I don't think it will. But if Jared Leto's involved,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: Dear God help us all. So, uh, you know, end
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: of an Era, Tron, Tron Legacy, Tron Aris, Tron, putting
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: an aries, putting an end to the Tron era. So
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: we can just rewatch Tron Legacy and listen to the
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: soundtrack over and over again and then and the soundtrack
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: for Tron Areas as well. It's pretty good. So it's
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: very good, and especially with red headlights in the world
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: being very common, if you put it on while driving,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: it makes you feel like you're in the world of
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Tron for those of you who love to listen to
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: music while driving as opposed to those of you that
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: are listening to this while driving instead. So go check
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: it out because it's as good as anything is. Atticus
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Ross and Trent Reznor have done together, and they've done
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: a lot together, including well the Social Network, Girl with
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: the Dragon Tattoo. I mean, they've worked with a lot
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: of people. This is you know, this is a really
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: good soundtrack. It's yeah, kind of unfortunate that the soundtrack
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: is better than the movie, because I don't think the
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: soundtrack for Legacy is any better than the movie is.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: I think they're both very very good. And also to
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: mention one other thing, to speak to the Star Wars
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: of it all, the digitally de aged and digital Jeff
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Bridges look very good now, more so than I would
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: have remembered them looking ever, And they look better than
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: a lot of the digitally d aged you know, Grand
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Mov Tarkin, you know, Princess Leia, all those kind of
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: you know, the Mark Hamill, I mean so many. I
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: mean Star Wars just did over and over and over again.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: So those are the ones I need to go back
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: to in terms of points of reference. But digitally daged
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: clue slash Jeff Bridges pretty good. And also Jeff Bridges's
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: voice doesn't sound like Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones as
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: clue like. He actually sounds like a younger version of himself.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: He kind of they either pitched it correctly or he
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: was doing the like a pitched up version of his voice,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: but it doesn't sound like old man Jeff Bridges, which
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: in tron Areas it's very much old man Jeff Bridges
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: kind of garb his lines, so you know, and a
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: little less of the dude and man of it all
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: from Tron Legacy, which I always laugh. Jeff Bridges is
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: doing the dude abides you know, dude and man. I
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: know Kevin Flynn did it in Tron, but it's just
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: it's funny because again, Tron comes out win, Jeff Bridges
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: is not a household name. Tron Legacy comes out when
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Jeff Bridges being involved in the project is enough of
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: a needle mover in the mainstream pop culture to get
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: eyes on it, you know, And that's why he's in
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: drawn areas. Yeah, I mean, you know, go see tron
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Arias if you want to try to get some support
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: under the wings of Tron, under the digital wings of Tron.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: But I think that this might be the end of
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: an era for Tron unfortunately. So you know, until the
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: next solo episode of the Culture Cast and you know,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: if you are a animal lover and a pet have,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: you know, keep me in your thoughts because you know,
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: every day is a little bit of a struggle here,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: because losing an animal is pretty rough. So and you know,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: if you know, you know, as they say so, and
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: please like, rate, and review the show on iTunes give

- 1:07:09Speaker 1: the show and you've never left a review on iTunes,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: go and do that. It helps out the show immensely.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: And it's the easiest way to interact with the show
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: non financially, So yeah, if you want to interact financially.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Patreon dot com slash culture Cast. We post episodes of
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Rank and on Bond once a month and some bonus
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: stuff from time to time as well. Try to get
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: better about that as well. So go there, do that,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: and you know, come back for the next episode of
