- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for April 25, 2026 When
- 0:04asking for what you need feels risky A question was asked about people who don't
- 0:08feel safe asking for what they need Not feeling safe does not mean someone is
- 0:13in an abusive relationship It could be knowing that you will have to defend
- 0:17what you say You may know your needs will be dismissed as silly,
- 0:21unimportant, or selfish,
- 0:22Maybe you will get what you ask for with passive-aggressive anger,
- 0:26frustration, or a lot of sighing.
- 0:28Perhaps you know from past experience that you will get what you asked for once,
- 0:32and asking over and over gets old.
- 0:35What all these have in common is signaling that your needs are unimportant and
- 0:39I don't love you enough to care.
- 0:40If you are the one doing this, realize this is the message sent,
- 0:44regardless of what you mean.
- 0:45The solution, if you're the one not getting your needs met, is difficult.
- 0:50Your spouse may be denying you what you want because they're too busy,
- 0:53stressed out, or selfish.
- 0:54Or it could be that they're clueless or lacking in empathy.
- 0:58Regardless, you are up against a strong wall But walls can be dismantled one
- 1:03brick at a time with patience and the right tools It could also be that your
- 1:07spouse is doing what they learned growing up And it's just habit Still not an
- 1:11easy thing to overcome Some folks just stop asking because why set yourself up for rejection?
- 1:17If it's been years since you tried, make a new effort now Try saying something
- 1:21like, I need action to feel emotion.
- 1:25Be clear about the need and follow up if they look confused.
- 1:29If the problem is ongoing and
- 1:30you want to tackle the issue, getting third-party help is your best bet.
- 1:34If you want to take a run at it yourself, explain you feel your needs are not
- 1:38being taken seriously and it hurts you.
- 1:41Explain that beyond the unmet needs,
- 1:43you feel unloved. Try to avoid being accusatory. Just give the facts.
- 1:47If you get a positive response, be quick to thank your spouse.
- 1:51Even if it's not as much as you need, give them credit for making an attempt.
- 1:55Small changes are change, and appreciating them can lead to greater change.
- 2:00This is Paul reminding you that doing marriage well looks different for every couple.
