- 0:47Speaker 3: She's on the Money. Hello and welcome to She's on
- 1:09Speaker 3: the Money, the podcast that makes personal finance fun, especially
- 1:13Speaker 3: on Fridays. Friday is hands down my favorite day of
- 1:16Speaker 3: the week because as when we get our whole team
- 1:18Speaker 3: together and celebrate you our incredible She's on the Money
- 1:21Speaker 3: Community today, Miss Jesse Gri. She's going to be sharing
- 1:24Speaker 3: some of our favorite community money Wins. Miss besa Ed
- 1:27Speaker 3: is bringing broke tips that may genuinely change your life.
- 1:30Speaker 3: And we're diving into a money dilemma that I think
- 1:32Speaker 3: every single one of us has felt at some point.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Are you actually experiencing lifestyle creep? Or is it just
- 1:39Speaker 3: getting more expensive and you're just being way too hard
- 1:42Speaker 3: on yourself? That one, that's one, That one like, why
- 1:46Speaker 3: does it actually feel like we're spending more than ever
- 1:49Speaker 3: even though you're not being ridiculous, Like, we're not being ridiculous,
- 1:52Speaker 3: let's talk about it. And we also have a DM
- 1:55Speaker 3: that honestly, I think is going to hit a nerve
- 1:57Speaker 3: for a lot of people, not in a bad way,
- 1:59Speaker 3: but maybe also in a bad way. What happens when
- 2:02Speaker 3: you're the one in the relationship making all of the
- 2:04Speaker 3: financial decisions, not because you want to control something, but
- 2:07Speaker 3: because your partner just helps out. Annoying and also just
- 2:12Speaker 3: a little reminder if you also didn't already know, like
- 2:15Speaker 3: these dms are from people sliding into our dms, and
- 2:19Speaker 3: our money dilemma comes because on our website we have
- 2:22Speaker 3: a link where you can leave us voicemails, You can
- 2:24Speaker 3: leave us a little voice notes. Some of you this
- 2:26Speaker 3: is my favorite part of listening to all of the voicemails.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Some people just like are trialing it out on our website.
- 2:32Speaker 3: They're like, hey, She's on the Money, love you, and
- 2:34Speaker 3: then they hang out. You're like prank calling us. But
- 2:38Speaker 3: sometimes people prank call us and leave a full money dilemma.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And that's when you can hear yourself on the show.
- 2:42Speaker 3: So if you didn't know that, that's how you get
- 2:44Speaker 3: on the show, and you definitely should look it up.
- 2:46Speaker 3: So if you ever wanted to hear yourself on the podcast,
- 2:49Speaker 3: my friend, this is a sign, send me a voice note,
- 2:52Speaker 3: tell me what's going on, and you might just hear
- 2:54Speaker 3: yourself on the Friday Drinks episode. Now, before we dive
- 2:57Speaker 3: any deeper, do you know what time it is?
- 3:00Speaker 4: Star review time?
- 3:01Speaker 3: It is five star review time. And I love this.
- 3:04Speaker 3: We have an ego, so it does feed that. Now,
- 3:07Speaker 3: this is also a little nudge if you've been thinking, oh,
- 3:10Speaker 3: I probably should leave a five star review for She's
- 3:12Speaker 3: on the Money. Okay, stop thinking, start doing. It's all
- 3:15Speaker 3: about action. People. Actions speak louder than words. You can
- 3:18Speaker 3: leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or honestly, we
- 3:20Speaker 3: take them in any way, shape or form they come,
- 3:23Speaker 3: they have been emailed to us before you can DM
- 3:25Speaker 3: them to us on Instagram, and honestly, I would take
- 3:28Speaker 3: a scribbled piece of paper sent to us on a
- 3:30Speaker 3: carrier pigeon at this point, because we accept all forms
- 3:33Speaker 3: of ego stroking in this house agree. This week's five
- 3:37Speaker 3: star review comes from Sophie, and Sophie says, I heard
- 3:41Speaker 3: the other week that Jess got her whole own review,
- 3:43Speaker 3: so I felt compelled to leave one just for Beck.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Every single week I listened to the pod. She asks
- 3:50Speaker 3: the exact questions I'm thinking but wouldn't have the confidence
- 3:53Speaker 3: to say out loud. She somehow makes finance feel less intimidating,
- 3:57Speaker 3: less overwhelming, less shamey, as though I'm not behind, I'm
- 4:02Speaker 3: just learning with her and that is okay. She explains
- 4:06Speaker 3: things in a way that actually makes sense, and I
- 4:08Speaker 3: always finish episodes feeling a little bit calmer and a
- 4:11Speaker 3: little bit more in control of my money instead of
- 4:13Speaker 3: stressing about it as much as I usually do.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Bec.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I don't know if you know this, but you are
- 4:18Speaker 3: my comfort person, and I think I speak for a
- 4:20Speaker 3: lot of people in the community. Five stars for Beck.
- 4:23Speaker 3: No notes, Oh my god, that so nice.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Thank you so much.
- 4:28Speaker 3: That is like, isn't that so cute? That is so funny.
- 4:31Speaker 5: That's like the word I use when I'm at a
- 4:32Speaker 5: house party and someone doesn't know who someone, I'm like,
- 4:35Speaker 5: I want to be a comfort person.
- 4:37Speaker 3: It's like, it's so thank you. No, it's just a
- 4:42Speaker 3: friend we haven't met yet.
- 4:44Speaker 5: That is so sweet.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Was it Sophie. It was Sophie, Sophie.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I love you. I love Sophie, Thank you so much.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Disappointed she didn't send it via carrier pigeon, but we
- 4:54Speaker 3: will wait another day.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Nobody's perfect.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Send to my hand next time.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly clear. Moving on, I'm sorry. Egostroking is done.
- 5:02Speaker 3: It is now time for the part of Friday Drinks
- 5:04Speaker 3: where you guys get to ask us one question that
- 5:06Speaker 3: you are dying to know. It can be literally about anything.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Nothing is off limits, and this week's question came to
- 5:12Speaker 3: us by our Instagram DMS and Chanelle would like to
- 5:14Speaker 3: know what is something that used to feel completely normal
- 5:18Speaker 3: to buy it, but now feels like a bit of
- 5:20Speaker 3: a luxury. These two, very politely both just paused and
- 5:27Speaker 3: like pointed it at each other.
- 5:30Speaker 4: I'll go I'll take you it. It came to be
- 5:32Speaker 4: straight away immediately it was chips like a bad brock
- 5:36Speaker 4: Deli or a yes, because it used to be that
- 5:40Speaker 4: you could get one on sale, you know, for half price,
- 5:43Speaker 4: for two dollars fifty and now it's like two for five,
- 5:45Speaker 4: right yeah, and now it's literally seven dollars back. And
- 5:48Speaker 4: I just, you know, it's probably quite good for my
- 5:51Speaker 4: health that I'm not consuming as many chips, sous, but
- 5:53Speaker 4: I love a chip, and.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I feel like they're always on your grocery list.
- 5:56Speaker 4: I literally never buy them anymore because it's just I
- 5:58Speaker 4: can't justify it is a luxury. Yeah, totally bonkers. Chippies
- 6:03Speaker 4: are a luxury cut out potato. Literally, chippies are a
- 6:07Speaker 4: bit like that.
- 6:08Speaker 3: That's rude. Potatoes should not be a luxury.
- 6:12Speaker 5: That is so so true.
- 6:13Speaker 3: That's not giving Irish famine, is it.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:18Speaker 5: But also there's something about you that looks like someone
- 6:21Speaker 5: who likes the chip, do you know what, Like, there's
- 6:23Speaker 5: some people that look like they and you also look
- 6:26Speaker 5: at condiments on your chips.
- 6:28Speaker 4: I don't do you don't that's true source on the
- 6:31Speaker 4: side only, Oh.
- 6:32Speaker 3: My god, it's just like a horoscope. What's mine?
- 6:37Speaker 5: Okay, oh god, you dabble in an aoli not on,
- 6:43Speaker 5: but you have tomatoes on your hot chips?
- 6:45Speaker 1: I do?
- 6:47Speaker 3: Oh yeah. Like if it's tomato sauce, put it all over.
- 6:51Speaker 3: If it's I need a tipp What if it's to garlaki?
- 6:54Speaker 5: Yes, I see that.
- 6:55Speaker 3: I see that.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Oh my god, this is crazy, something weird having today?
- 6:59Speaker 3: God, what's yours?
- 7:00Speaker 6: Well?
- 7:01Speaker 3: What came to me first?
- 7:01Speaker 5: Obviously petrol, even though it's like it does feel like
- 7:04Speaker 5: it's always been a bit of a luxury, but it's
- 7:06Speaker 5: still kind of you didn't feel bad for buying it.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Now I feel bad for buying it. But also Milo,
- 7:12Speaker 5: I just really loved, my mind, I can.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Really buy that anymore. I just realized how much is Milo.
- 7:17Speaker 3: That's not something that I keep in the pantry. But
- 7:19Speaker 3: growing up, yes, that was Milo and ice cream, and
- 7:22Speaker 3: then you mix it really quick until it basically becomes
- 7:24Speaker 3: soft surf. Oh my god, delicious in every form.
- 7:28Speaker 5: It is so good. Like the smallest when you can
- 7:31Speaker 5: buy I'm pretty sure for memories still like eight.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Or nine dollars, no, yeah, illegal, I.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Think even like the big ones, the ones that were
- 7:40Speaker 5: like probably max thirteen dollars and probably now.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Like twenty No, that's something like I'm going to call
- 7:46Speaker 3: the Prime minister up. It's crazy. I have I have
- 7:50Speaker 3: some clumps.
- 7:51Speaker 4: I know, it's so sad you talk about this cost
- 7:54Speaker 4: of living crisis.
- 7:55Speaker 5: I wish things went up and down like petrol. You know,
- 7:58Speaker 5: it's like, okay, it's not expendive anymore, let's put it
- 8:00Speaker 5: back down now. No, anyway, that's how well works, I suppose.
- 8:04Speaker 3: And uve I was thinking about this when you guys
- 8:06Speaker 3: were talking, and the luxury thing kind of stuck with me,
- 8:11Speaker 3: Like what do I think is a luxury now? Lunch?
- 8:16Speaker 3: Like buying lunch out at work, like it used to
- 8:19Speaker 3: be for me, Like obviously it was always the more
- 8:21Speaker 3: expensive option. You could have always saved money by bringing
- 8:24Speaker 3: a sambo, right, But like in my head, lunch at
- 8:27Speaker 3: work used to be like ten or twelve dollars, Like
- 8:29Speaker 3: I'd walk down and just get some sushi, sushi, two
- 8:32Speaker 3: hand rolls and I'm done, sometimes three sometimes three and
- 8:35Speaker 3: a nice tea, like it just depends how hungry I was.
- 8:38Speaker 3: But like that never cost me more than like twelve bucks.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Why as sandwiches at the deli like twenty five to
- 8:45Speaker 3: twenty nine dollars.
- 8:46Speaker 5: The costs.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I don't understand. That is not lunch. That is a
- 8:51Speaker 3: dining out experience, Like I just go. I'm still going
- 8:55Speaker 3: to seven to eleven for my sandwich, So that's like
- 8:57Speaker 3: not the luxury but even just popping to the cafe
- 8:59Speaker 3: for lunch, which historically in my head is like, yes,
- 9:03Speaker 3: it's the more expensive lunch option, but now it's like
- 9:05Speaker 3: super premium lucks.
- 9:07Speaker 5: Yeah, that's so true.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Anyway, that's where I'm at. I hope that answered your question, Chanelle.
- 9:12Speaker 3: And if you've got a question that you want us
- 9:13Speaker 3: to answer on the show, please my friends send it through.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Literally nothing is too niche to random, more arguably too unhinged.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Those are arguably her favorite. Like that's what we want
- 9:23Speaker 3: to hear, all right, miss jesse Garici. Let's get into
- 9:26Speaker 3: the good stuff. What money wins or confessions have the
- 9:28Speaker 3: community had this week?
- 9:29Speaker 4: All right? Starting off with what Lannie says. It's a
- 9:32Speaker 4: money lost, but in the best type of way. She
- 9:33Speaker 4: said she heard a colleague's friend had a surprise baby,
- 9:36Speaker 4: and she offered them all of their baby stuff, the catchull,
- 9:39Speaker 4: the pram, the cot, the mattress. Probably around six hundred
- 9:42Speaker 4: dollars worth of stuff that she'd purchased secondhand.
- 9:45Speaker 3: So sweet.
- 9:45Speaker 4: She said she was beyond happy to one not have
- 9:47Speaker 4: to do with Facebook marketplace and to be able to
- 9:49Speaker 4: help someone out that needs it. And then she said,
- 9:52Speaker 4: maybe this is their money win. I really think what
- 9:54Speaker 4: goes around comes around.
- 9:57Speaker 1: That.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I have questions. Did you have surprise baby in that
- 10:01Speaker 3: you fell pregnant by surprise or did you have a
- 10:04Speaker 3: surprise baby because you thought you had an appendicitis and
- 10:08Speaker 3: you went to the hospital and bam, you had a baby.
- 10:11Speaker 4: I am curious. Let us know, lady, what happened to.
- 10:13Speaker 3: You, because I've heard those stories.
- 10:14Speaker 5: They terrify me, very very seriously.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Next, I've got a money in from Marina, who said
- 10:19Speaker 4: a potentially petty money in arguably my personal favorite.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Yeah, they're my favorite. She said.
- 10:25Speaker 4: She lives across from an oval and there's a person
- 10:27Speaker 4: who keeps golfing there and balls are landing too close
- 10:30Speaker 4: to her house. A fair few of landed right in
- 10:32Speaker 4: her front yard by the window.
- 10:34Speaker 3: That's dangerous.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Well, on top of that, one day, this rude man
- 10:37Speaker 4: left all of his balls scattered all across the oval,
- 10:40Speaker 4: so Marina walked over collected them all and sold them
- 10:42Speaker 4: on Facebook marketplace.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Icon and I love that fair icon. You make sure
- 10:47Speaker 3: you take note of that man because if he ever
- 10:49Speaker 3: breaks your window, that's who you're gonna have to go to.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Next, Victoria said, I've been picking meals from Chelsea Goodwin's
- 10:57Speaker 4: book Ten Dollar Meals with Chelsea great money, and the
- 11:00Speaker 4: bonus recipes are super tasty. If you haven't already, Victoria,
- 11:03Speaker 4: we have a great episode with Chelsea. She's fantastic, and
- 11:07Speaker 4: a little ebook on my website as well. Next, I've
- 11:09Speaker 4: got a money win from Kate, who said my biggest
- 11:10Speaker 4: money win is my shift in mindset, the empowerment to
- 11:13Speaker 4: push through debt and see the light. I've been getting
- 11:16Speaker 4: dopamine now from delayed gratification instead of inst I love.
- 11:20Speaker 5: Well, that's beautiful and I'm.
- 11:21Speaker 4: A really big fan of that. I think it's amazing.
- 11:23Speaker 4: And then lastly this week I've got a money win
- 11:25Speaker 4: from Mea which you guys might have seen this, but
- 11:27Speaker 4: just in case you haven't, free public transport in Victoria
- 11:30Speaker 4: for April twenty twenty six. That is so good money.
- 11:33Speaker 4: If ever I've heard one God bless God, Bless God,
- 11:35Speaker 4: bless We love that.
- 11:37Speaker 3: I love that, and I feel like there is literally
- 11:39Speaker 3: nothing better than a community that like hipes each other
- 11:41Speaker 3: up like sorry, we share like little money tips and
- 11:44Speaker 3: tricks with each other each week. So slyh, I love
- 11:46Speaker 3: it all right, Beck, hit us with your broke tips
- 11:49Speaker 3: for the week.
- 11:49Speaker 5: What have you got so as per, I've got two
- 11:52Speaker 5: from the community. This first one comes from Chloe, who
- 11:54Speaker 5: says instead of doing a full grocery shop every week,
- 11:57Speaker 5: she now does a pantry shop where she has to
- 12:00Speaker 5: build at least three meals using what she's already got
- 12:02Speaker 5: at home before she's allowed to go to the supermarket.
- 12:05Speaker 5: She said it's cut her grocery bill almost in half
- 12:08Speaker 5: because she realized she already had so much random stuff
- 12:11Speaker 5: sitting in the cupboard, which is a great, great, great tip.
- 12:13Speaker 5: I know we've mentioned something similar before where you make
- 12:15Speaker 5: sure you check your pantry we have a home before
- 12:18Speaker 5: you do go grocery shopping, but this is takes it
- 12:20Speaker 5: a step further, I think, which is like, no, I.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Need to find three meals and what am I doing
- 12:24Speaker 3: with these lentils?
- 12:25Speaker 5: Totally And also a reminder that there are websites you
- 12:29Speaker 5: just have to google. I don't know what they call it,
- 12:30Speaker 5: but listing your ingredients and it will generate a recipe
- 12:35Speaker 5: for you based on what you have at home. So
- 12:37Speaker 5: I yeah, i'd say just google that. I don't think
- 12:39Speaker 5: there's one specific one that I use. The next one
- 12:42Speaker 5: comes from Mia, who says that she started using her
- 12:45Speaker 5: notes app as a running wish list for anything she
- 12:47Speaker 5: wants to buy that isn't essential. She has to leave
- 12:49Speaker 5: it on the list for seven days before she can
- 12:51Speaker 5: actually purchase it.
- 12:52Speaker 3: That's better than now in twenty four hour rule.
- 12:54Speaker 5: Yeah, seven days, that's like, that's a lot.
- 12:57Speaker 3: She said.
- 12:57Speaker 5: About eighty percent of the time she completely FETs bout
- 13:00Speaker 5: or realize this, she doesn't actually want it, which is
- 13:02Speaker 5: so humbling but also very good for your bank account.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I love it, I do love it, And Beck say ed,
- 13:07Speaker 3: what is your broad tip?
- 13:08Speaker 5: Okay, so as maybe everyone knows I cannot find a
- 13:12Speaker 5: goddamn job, and I really quickly this is not part
- 13:15Speaker 5: of the broke tip, but I want to quickly mention
- 13:17Speaker 5: that if you.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Want to hire Beck, message back yessually, I've got her details.
- 13:22Speaker 3: I've got a Beck for sale. How much, thank you
- 13:24Speaker 3: so much, thank you so much.
- 13:25Speaker 5: I should say it's not because I'm a bad workouts
- 13:27Speaker 5: because unfortunately it's hard to.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Get a job right now in the job marketing, so cruent.
- 13:31Speaker 3: I think a lot of people listening to this are
- 13:33Speaker 3: going to be like, ah, yes, queen, we see you.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Seriously, I cannot find a job anyway, But I decided
- 13:38Speaker 5: that I would rather just be broke than broke and
- 13:40Speaker 5: feel shame as well. So I am broke, but not shameful. Anyway.
- 13:45Speaker 5: I was talking to my friend who works in family violence,
- 13:47Speaker 5: who said that there is something called PRAP Private Rental
- 13:51Speaker 5: Assistance Program and basically this form is I'm going to
- 13:54Speaker 5: read out the form. This form is used to apply
- 13:56Speaker 5: for funding when you have been approved for a property
- 13:58Speaker 5: and need help with the first month's rent, or when
- 14:01Speaker 5: you are behind in your rent. Before applying, you need
- 14:04Speaker 5: some documents for too id income, all this kind of stuff,
- 14:07Speaker 5: but basically you don't need In my mind, you need
- 14:09Speaker 5: to be on sendling. But I don't think you need
- 14:11Speaker 5: to be on sendling for this one. You just need
- 14:12Speaker 5: to be that's cool in a position where you are
- 14:15Speaker 5: just struggling to pay your bills and need some help.
- 14:19Speaker 3: So have a little Google.
- 14:21Speaker 5: It's Unison PRP Private rental assistance program.
- 14:26Speaker 3: If you are struggling, that's amazing. There are so many
- 14:28Speaker 3: good things in this world.
- 14:30Speaker 4: I know.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Isn't that incredible?
- 14:31Speaker 1: I love that.
- 14:31Speaker 3: All Right, let's take a really quick break. But when
- 14:33Speaker 3: we come back, I am diving straight into this week's
- 14:36Speaker 3: money dilemma because I have a feeling it's going to
- 14:38Speaker 3: be very, very relatable.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 14:46Speaker 4: money dilemma.
- 14:48Speaker 6: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 14:51Speaker 6: can't solve? The Sheese on the Money team is here
- 14:53Speaker 6: to help. Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 14:57Speaker 6: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and

- 15:02Speaker 6: website and leave us a short voice recording and you
- 15:05Speaker 6: might just find yourself on the show.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Now, let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma. Hey,
- 15:12Speaker 3: she'sing the money.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I have a quick question just regarding a lifestyle creep
- 15:17Speaker 2: and every day spending. So how do you know the
- 15:22Speaker 2: difference between a lifestyle creep and just everyday expenses increasing?
- 15:29Speaker 2: For example, I feel like I'm spending a lot more
- 15:32Speaker 2: money now than I was three years ago, but I'm
- 15:35Speaker 2: not spending money on unnecessary things. It's just more groceries
- 15:40Speaker 2: have increased, fuel is increased, and I have a few
- 15:45Speaker 2: more bills to pay than I did three years ago.
- 15:48Speaker 2: With of some help on how to navigate that and
- 15:52Speaker 2: not feel so guilty for spending more money just on
- 15:55Speaker 2: everyday life.
- 15:56Speaker 4: And discuss I think that exactly what you say is
- 16:00Speaker 4: how you determine lifestyle creep refers specifically to not necessarily
- 16:04Speaker 4: spending more money, but spending more money on a more
- 16:08Speaker 4: luxurious lifestyle is the best fact can explain it. So
- 16:11Speaker 4: the example of Victoria always gives that I think is
- 16:13Speaker 4: a really great one. Is you know, when you're on
- 16:15Speaker 4: a lower income, you might have been purchasing your makeup
- 16:17Speaker 4: at the grocery store, like a Woolies or Coals, and
- 16:20Speaker 4: then you earn a bit more money, you've graduated to
- 16:22Speaker 4: like a price line or a camast warehouse, and then
- 16:25Speaker 4: once you earn a bit more money than that, you're
- 16:26Speaker 4: shopping it like your Mecca and your Sophora. And so
- 16:29Speaker 4: it's like you're buying the same products, but you're buying
- 16:31Speaker 4: more expensive versions of those products. And I think it's
- 16:34Speaker 4: particularly relevant if the product is not servicing you in
- 16:37Speaker 4: the same way. So like graduating from you know, a
- 16:41Speaker 4: home brand flower to a name brand flower, it's the
- 16:43Speaker 4: same thing. It's doing the same job. I think it's
- 16:46Speaker 4: a little bit different if you're looking at two things
- 16:49Speaker 4: and I'm trying to think of an example, like two
- 16:51Speaker 4: things that are different, but the more expensive.
- 16:53Speaker 3: One jams tim jams have gone up. That's not lifestyle creep.
- 16:57Speaker 3: You still deserve your tymtams, but they're taking them. Absolutely, Niki, Absolutely.
- 17:01Speaker 4: I think like you can sometimes upgrading to a more
- 17:05Speaker 4: expensive thing it might work better. Like I'm thinking about
- 17:09Speaker 4: maybe an appliance from a Kmar. Like a lot of
- 17:11Speaker 4: my appliances that I bought when I was young from
- 17:13Speaker 4: Camar would break within twelve months.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Yeah, so I think buy it was buy it right.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Yeah, So I think investing in a more expensive version,
- 17:19Speaker 4: I would not personally always consider that lifestyle creep. If
- 17:22Speaker 4: you're investing in a higher quality will last you longer.
- 17:26Speaker 4: But I think it's really about spending more on luxury items.
- 17:29Speaker 4: If the things you're already buying are increasing in price,
- 17:32Speaker 4: that's actually out of your control and it's almost like
- 17:34Speaker 4: reverse lifestyle creep. I feel like when you go, Okay,
- 17:36Speaker 4: well I have to cut those things because you mean,
- 17:38Speaker 4: like I don't buy chips anymore, and so it's like, well,
- 17:40Speaker 4: to me, it's like I'm moving backwards almost in terms
- 17:43Speaker 4: of the lifestyle creep in that aspect. In terms of
- 17:46Speaker 4: the guilt, I think you just need to give yourself grace,
- 17:48Speaker 4: like we're all doing the best we can. If the
- 17:50Speaker 4: things you buy regularly are getting more expensive, there's not
- 17:53Speaker 4: much you can do about that other than considering whether
- 17:56Speaker 4: or not there are things you can swap out. You know,
- 17:58Speaker 4: my red Rock Delli chips became the cold brands, and
- 18:00Speaker 4: you know, then it became what we only buy those
- 18:03Speaker 4: every so often that it's hard to feel like you're
- 18:07Speaker 4: just keeping yourself afloat. And I get that, but also
- 18:11Speaker 4: I think with everything that's going on at the moment,
- 18:13Speaker 4: we do sometimes just have to be kind to ourselves.
- 18:15Speaker 4: And you know, if you haven't already reviewed your budget,
- 18:18Speaker 4: make sure everything's in order that if you're doing the
- 18:20Speaker 4: best you can. Like that is completely okay.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I completely agree with you. And I have one
- 18:25Speaker 5: friend in particular who is always really hard on myself
- 18:28Speaker 5: because she's saying, I'm just spending so much money. I'm
- 18:31Speaker 5: just like buying silly things, and like, no, there's a
- 18:34Speaker 5: point where like the world is getting more expensive. You're
- 18:37Speaker 5: making the same money, things are just more expensive. Unfortunately
- 18:39Speaker 5: ND have as much left over at the end of
- 18:42Speaker 5: the month or at the end very pay cycle. So yeah,
- 18:45Speaker 5: it's sounding very much like not lifestyle creep and very
- 18:49Speaker 5: much like the world is getting more expensive. So I
- 18:52Speaker 5: think go easy on yourself, be kind to yourself exactly.
- 18:56Speaker 3: You said, you're clearly quite self aware, like you're asking
- 19:00Speaker 3: this question and you're probably feeling bad about it because
- 19:03Speaker 3: money is hard at the moment, but economically, wage growth
- 19:07Speaker 3: is not keeping up with inflation. Like at the end
- 19:10Speaker 3: of the day, stuff is getting more expensive and we're
- 19:13Speaker 3: not getting paid more. Like that is the crux of
- 19:15Speaker 3: the whole story, and that is really trashy, Like that
- 19:18Speaker 3: doesn't feel good. And you know what, you haven't come
- 19:21Speaker 3: this far and you know gotten to this part in life.
- 19:24Speaker 3: You know, Chips is a great example. You're like, hold on,
- 19:27Speaker 3: hold on, where's the line? Because you have a good job,
- 19:30Speaker 3: you put in the same time, energy and effort, and
- 19:33Speaker 3: you're trying really hard and all of that other stuff
- 19:35Speaker 3: but you're like, stuff is just so expensive. So I
- 19:38Speaker 3: now feel like I'm not even living the same life
- 19:40Speaker 3: as I was before, but I'm maybe even putting in
- 19:42Speaker 3: more effort now or saving better or investing better, but
- 19:46Speaker 3: I still can't afford. Chibbi's like, what the hell is
- 19:50Speaker 3: going on? So I think, yes, lifestyle creep is something
- 19:53Speaker 3: to be aware of. And as you said, just my
- 19:56Speaker 3: favorite example is makeup. But not is that it's lifestyle creep.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Is not your life inflating. So I mean, if rent
- 20:07Speaker 3: is the problem, yes, that's not your fault. But I
- 20:09Speaker 3: mean if you've just upgraded to a three bedroom house
- 20:11Speaker 3: and you're a single dude, like, that's probably a different story.
- 20:15Speaker 3: That maybe is lifestyle creep. And then you just need
- 20:17Speaker 3: to look at it between the discretionary items that you're
- 20:20Speaker 3: purchasing and the essentials, and that's probably where your answer is.
- 20:24Speaker 3: All right, let's slide on into our own DMS this week.
- 20:28Speaker 3: You guys have been sending through some very juicy situations
- 20:30Speaker 3: and this one is absolutely no exception. Hey, she's on
- 20:33Speaker 3: the money. I hope you guys are doing well. I've
- 20:36Speaker 3: got a dilemma. I really need your advice on money
- 20:39Speaker 3: decisions in my marriage. I've heard on the podcast about
- 20:42Speaker 3: couples where one person makes all the money decisions without
- 20:45Speaker 3: consulting the other, and honestly, that's me. My husband doesn't
- 20:50Speaker 3: really have financial goals and isn't interested in looking at
- 20:53Speaker 3: the budget, so I end up taking it all on.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Do you guys have any tips for getting him more
- 20:59Speaker 3: involved and helping me feel less guilty about being the
- 21:02Speaker 3: one that makes all the decisions.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Guilty, I'm thinking at the start of this, I was like,
- 21:08Speaker 5: do you feel do you feel overloaded? Do you feel
- 21:11Speaker 5: like you're taking on all the mental load?
- 21:13Speaker 3: It's great?
- 21:14Speaker 5: Do you feel angry? I would feel angry, but I
- 21:17Speaker 5: am hearing guilty at the end, and I.
- 21:21Speaker 3: That see that resonated with me because, like on the
- 21:25Speaker 3: flip side, it's not how my relationship works. But I'm like,
- 21:30Speaker 3: so taype Ai, so like my way or the highway.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Sometimes that I'm like, oh, Steve, we want to do this,
- 21:36Speaker 3: and then I'm like, oh, I feel guilty. I've made
- 21:38Speaker 3: that decision without consulting him. This wasn't a partnership, Like
- 21:41Speaker 3: I need to backtrack, and that's why I feel guilty.
- 21:43Speaker 3: So when I heard her say Oh, basically, my husband's
- 21:46Speaker 3: letting me do all this stuff, and I feel kind
- 21:48Speaker 3: of guilty because whenever I try to get him involved,
- 21:50Speaker 3: he doesn't want to be involved.
- 21:51Speaker 5: I wish there was a world where men thought this
- 21:54Speaker 5: when they're partners. I'm being very, very stereotypical here, but
- 21:57Speaker 5: when they're generally female partners, staying home with the kids
- 22:01Speaker 5: and not having any super all of these things, guilt
- 22:05Speaker 5: should be applied then in that situation, I would think.
- 22:08Speaker 5: But if like your husband, he's I'm sure he's got
- 22:11Speaker 5: a job, he's probably not sacrificing a whole ten twenty
- 22:14Speaker 5: years of his entire life where he could be making
- 22:16Speaker 5: money to take care of your shared children. I just
- 22:19Speaker 5: don't They shouldn't be a guilt, shouldn'tel bad about it
- 22:22Speaker 5: if he wants to be involved, If you're like keeping
- 22:24Speaker 5: him in the loop and in no way he's like
- 22:26Speaker 5: financially compromised, or he could be in a really bad
- 22:31Speaker 5: place in the future because of I guess, like not
- 22:36Speaker 5: really being open to or into or like part of
- 22:39Speaker 5: the financial decisions that you're making, then feel bad. But
- 22:42Speaker 5: I think if he's like chillin' he's got a job,
- 22:45Speaker 5: you're both working. You're both like, maybe I'm being too pessimistic,
- 22:48Speaker 5: but I'm like, I don't think it matters too much
- 22:50Speaker 5: unless one party is going to be very obviously financially
- 22:55Speaker 5: Like what's the word I'm looking for, impacted in the
- 22:57Speaker 5: future in like a negative way. I think it's so
- 23:00Speaker 5: fun unless you're tired of carrying the mental load, and
- 23:03Speaker 5: then you should not feel guilty angry.
- 23:05Speaker 3: That's a different story, different story. That's a different story. Yes, yeah,
- 23:08Speaker 3: I agree.
- 23:08Speaker 4: I think the key thing for me in that message
- 23:10Speaker 4: was that you said that he doesn't care to be
- 23:12Speaker 4: involved or he's not really interested. So I think you
- 23:15Speaker 4: that should absolve you of any guilt, Like if he's
- 23:18Speaker 4: not wanting to participate and you're going, okay, well one
- 23:20Speaker 4: of us has got to do it. I guess it's
- 23:22Speaker 4: going to be me. Good on you, queen, like, don't
- 23:24Speaker 4: feel bad about that. To Echobeck sentiment, I think that
- 23:28Speaker 4: it depends on how you feel. Like some people like
- 23:30Speaker 4: Victoria are really happy to take that load on. For others,
- 23:32Speaker 4: I think it's to me. Yeah, I think the load
- 23:35Speaker 4: might not be something you want to carry. It might
- 23:36Speaker 4: be something you at least want some interesting in which
- 23:38Speaker 4: case I think you should raise that with him. It's
- 23:40Speaker 4: very relevant. You're his partner, not his parent. It is
- 23:43Speaker 4: a partnership, and sometimes we have to do things you
- 23:45Speaker 4: don't like. I don't like going to the grocery store.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Do I do it? Sometimes? Absolutely? So it's like one
- 23:49Speaker 4: of those things. But I think if you are wanting
- 23:51Speaker 4: to raise the conversation, my advice would be sit him
- 23:54Speaker 4: down and kind of explain, you know, explain you feeling guilty.
- 23:58Speaker 4: I think that's important because I would never want my
- 24:00Speaker 4: partner to be feeling guilty about something because of a
- 24:03Speaker 4: choice that I've made, So I think that probably would
- 24:05Speaker 4: be quite impactful. And then explain like I'm packing a
- 24:08Speaker 4: little bit, Explain why I say I feel like I'm
- 24:10Speaker 4: making decisions without you, or I'm feeling stressed because I'm
- 24:13Speaker 4: carrying all of this by myself. Your partner theoretically like
- 24:18Speaker 4: loves you and they want you. Theoretically, Yeah, well, I
- 24:22Speaker 4: know I goes sweepy shabit, but you know, I mean
- 24:24Speaker 4: like you're together because you love each other and you
- 24:25Speaker 4: want to make each other's lives easier and you want
- 24:27Speaker 4: to build a great future together. If your goal oriented
- 24:30Speaker 4: and he's not that is okay, but you still need
- 24:33Speaker 4: to find a middle ground where you don't feel like
- 24:34Speaker 4: you're doing it all by yourself.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, no, I agree. I don't have a lot
- 24:38Speaker 3: to add here because, as I said before, oh I
- 24:40Speaker 3: resonate with that, And historically what I've done is be like, hey, Steve,
- 24:45Speaker 3: I feel like I'm making all the decisions here, like
- 24:47Speaker 3: did you have anything to add, Like what are you thinking?
- 24:50Speaker 3: And most of the time, when it's about stuff like that,
- 24:53Speaker 3: he's like, oh, I don't care, and I'll be like, yeah,
- 24:56Speaker 3: but surely you care. He's like no, no, no, like
- 24:58Speaker 3: I think you're making good decisions, like I don't need
- 25:00Speaker 3: to get involved.
- 25:01Speaker 4: Like you should care because yeah, it packs you care more.
- 25:06Speaker 3: And then I'm annoyed when he does care too much,
- 25:08Speaker 3: and I'm like, but I didn't want him pink, I
- 25:10Speaker 3: wanted it in blue. What are you talking about? Imagine?
- 25:14Speaker 3: But literally like I would as you said, yes, you're
- 25:17Speaker 3: absolved of any guilt if he doesn't want to be
- 25:19Speaker 3: involved and you've been like, hey, what's going on? And
- 25:22Speaker 3: then t Beck's comment, but do you feel anger because
- 25:25Speaker 3: that's different than guilt.
- 25:26Speaker 4: And it's also valid, yes, very valid, Yes, but what
- 25:30Speaker 4: don't everybody else say?
- 25:31Speaker 3: Oh my goodness. So first things first, I asked them
- 25:33Speaker 3: a few questions. First question was, how do you split
- 25:35Speaker 3: money management in your relationship. Fifty seven percent of you
- 25:39Speaker 3: said fifty to fifty. I love this, that's not very
- 25:43Speaker 3: nineteen fifties of us, thirty nine percent said I manage everything.
- 25:47Speaker 4: That's a big amount.
- 25:49Speaker 3: That's a big amount, and four percent said, my partner
- 25:51Speaker 3: manages everything.
- 25:52Speaker 4: I feel like that tracks because the people who are
- 25:54Speaker 4: listening to this show.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Would be the people. Yeah, the people in our community
- 25:58Speaker 3: you care about money. I can't imagine people who are like,
- 26:02Speaker 3: I don't want anything to do with the family finances
- 26:04Speaker 3: is going to go you know what I'm going to
- 26:05Speaker 3: listen to.
- 26:06Speaker 5: Yeah, they're the people I want to get. So that's true.
- 26:09Speaker 3: I'll work out a way. The next question I asked
- 26:12Speaker 3: was have you ever had to speak to your partner
- 26:14Speaker 3: about sharing the mental load when it comes to finances.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Thirty percent of you said yes, I have and it
- 26:19Speaker 3: went well. Twenty nine percent of you said I haven't good,
- 26:23Speaker 3: have gone better? And forty two percent of you, again,
- 26:25Speaker 3: I think this is reflective of our community, said thankfully,
- 26:28Speaker 3: I haven't.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Yeah, that was a way better split than I thought
- 26:31Speaker 4: it would be.
- 26:31Speaker 3: To be honest, Then, as always, we said community, what
- 26:35Speaker 3: is your two cents? First person says, my hubby's more
- 26:39Speaker 3: focused on an end goal how we get there. He
- 26:42Speaker 3: couldn't give two hoots, which is fair.
- 26:44Speaker 4: If that's how you guys want to split things and
- 26:46Speaker 4: everybody's happy, that's not totally fine exactly.
- 26:48Speaker 3: He's just like, babe, I'm happy to strap in. You
- 26:51Speaker 3: said that we're going here, you can drive. Thanks. Next
- 26:54Speaker 3: person said, honestly, I'd take it as a blessing that
- 26:57Speaker 3: you are the one in control. No arguing, no deceit,
- 26:59Speaker 3: just trusting your own instincts. Yeah, I think that's cute,
- 27:02Speaker 3: But I also want my husband to have an opinion.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Maybe I don't. Maybe I need to revisit this. Yeah,
- 27:08Speaker 3: maybe I want a whole new relationship dynamic.
- 27:11Speaker 5: We gonna say relationship, Okay, not at this point.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Not at this point. Next person said, I really wouldn't
- 27:19Speaker 3: date someone, let alone marry someone who didn't want to
- 27:22Speaker 3: share my financial goals. Another person said they need a
- 27:26Speaker 3: He's on the Money podcast for this fellow who won't
- 27:28Speaker 3: pick up a book just because it's.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Pink, doesn't mean he can't listen, That's all I'm saying.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Well, we have a lot of men in our community,
- 27:35Speaker 3: and I appreciate them, but they're allowed here because they
- 27:37Speaker 3: are our people, you know. Another person said, the person
- 27:41Speaker 3: or the people in the coupling that are more financially
- 27:44Speaker 3: in that mindset should be the one taking lead.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Sure, sure lift each other agrees.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Someone else said, I told my husband that he needs
- 27:51Speaker 3: to know where our money goes so he knows I'm
- 27:53Speaker 3: not embezzling our family.
- 27:55Speaker 4: That's hilarious.
- 27:55Speaker 5: I feel like that would be me.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Please sit down, because I don't want you to think
- 28:00Speaker 3: I'm stealing money from this household. Another person said, if
- 28:04Speaker 3: he wants his spending budget, he can be involved in
- 28:07Speaker 3: the budget. Yeah, she's withholding it. She's like, if you're
- 28:11Speaker 3: not involved in the budget, you get no budget.
- 28:14Speaker 4: I don't hate that.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Take men who have to advocate for themselves.
- 28:18Speaker 5: What manas God spending it on? Just sorry.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Another person said, we make the decisions together, and then
- 28:26Speaker 3: I just manage the whole thing because I'm controlling.
- 28:29Speaker 5: I love you.
- 28:30Speaker 3: And then someone else said, and this is going to
- 28:31Speaker 3: be the last one that I share, said, my partner
- 28:33Speaker 3: actually has ADHD. Trying to get him to pay a
- 28:36Speaker 3: bill when it comes to it is near impossible. So
- 28:39Speaker 3: I just take the lead and that's just how our
- 28:41Speaker 3: relationship works. Well, okay, I think that one's a good
- 28:44Speaker 3: one as well, because there are reasons why people might
- 28:47Speaker 3: not want to be super involved. Totally don't involve just
- 28:50Speaker 3: being like, oh, I'm scared of money or I don't
- 28:52Speaker 3: want to talk about our finances. They're like, baby, if
- 28:54Speaker 3: you give me the responsibility, that's terrible, Like I won't
- 28:59Speaker 3: do it, will be in more of a financial pickle,
- 29:01Speaker 3: and then yeah, you can work it out from there.
- 29:03Speaker 4: Right, Every partnership is different. It's about finding what works
- 29:06Speaker 4: for you and making sure that you don't feel bad
- 29:08Speaker 4: about it. There's nothing wrong with your dynamic except for
- 29:10Speaker 4: the fact that you're feeling guilt.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Yes, exactly, and we don't want to do that. So
- 29:13Speaker 3: hopefully this has helped a little bit solve that. But
- 29:17Speaker 3: as no surprise to anybody, the key to this is communication.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Crazy All right, my friends, that is all we have
- 29:24Speaker 3: time for today. As always, thank you so much for
- 29:27Speaker 3: being a part of our beautiful community, whether you're listening
- 29:30Speaker 3: on your walk or in your car or you're pretending
- 29:32Speaker 3: to work. We do really appreciate you. Have the best weekend,
- 29:35Speaker 3: look after yourselves, and we will see you bright and
- 29:37Speaker 3: early on Monday morning for a brand new money diary.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Bye guys, Bye bye.
