- 0:26So we're going to talk all things, binge
- 0:28eating, emotional eating, and figure out what we

- 0:33make it a little bit easier because we've
- 0:34all been there from time to time.
- 0:36So today I'm joined by Amber Romaniac.
- 0:39Did I say that right?
- 0:40Kind of.
- 0:41Yeah, we've had this before guys.
- 0:44Yeah, it's okay.
- 0:45I've had all kinds of renditions from romantic
- 0:47to Roman chuck to Roman yak.
- 0:50Like it's, it's a fun last name to
- 0:53try and pronounce.
- 0:54And yeah, I'm so excited to have her
- 0:56on the show too, because we've been trying
- 0:58to get this podcast together for about a
- 1:00month and a half now.
- 1:01So now that it's come together, I'm like,
- 1:03yes, let's talk.
- 1:05Yeah.
- 1:05Thank you for having me.
- 1:06I'm really excited to be with you.
- 1:08Absolutely.
- 1:09So Amber, first off, I just love to
- 1:10share a little bit of your own journey.
- 1:12I know that on your website, you shared
- 1:14how you've lost over a thousand pounds over
- 1:16your lifetime.
- 1:17You spent $50,000 on food because of
- 1:20binge eating habits.
- 1:21So I'd love to hear a little bit
- 1:23about your story and how that got you
- 1:25to where you are today.
- 1:26Yeah, totally.
- 1:27So I'll keep it as brief as possible,
- 1:29but to give some key points along the
- 1:31way, because I think this starts to help
- 1:33people build awareness of where did I even
- 1:35pick up the habits of binge eating, emotional
- 1:37eating, food addiction, people pleasing, body image issues,
- 1:40like whatever's going on for you.
- 1:41And so when I was five, what I
- 1:44would call one of my defining moments at
- 1:45that time was it was my first day
- 1:47taking the bus to school.
- 1:49My family just moved out to an acreage.
- 1:50And so I was pumped to get on
- 1:52the bus, make new friends, I get on
- 1:53the bus and immediately the older boys call
- 1:56me fat and ugly.
- 1:57And then the whole bus is making fun
- 1:59of me.
- 1:59And I was absolutely just in shock.
- 2:02And it's crazy how those things stick with
- 2:04you.
- 2:05Oh, yeah.
- 2:05And I think this is the thing is
- 2:07people don't realize.
- 2:08And as a child at that age, I
- 2:09didn't realize, but that was a trauma.
- 2:11Like I was so shocked and I had
- 2:14no idea how to just brush that off.
- 2:16And I took on that identity of fat
- 2:18and ugly for the next 20 years of
- 2:19my life and became very insecure in my
- 2:21body, didn't want to talk to boys or
- 2:23have boys that were friends because they're all
- 2:24really mean from that experience.
- 2:27And so that really fueled the body image
- 2:29and the insecurity.
- 2:30And then I am an only child.
- 2:32And my mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis
- 2:35before I was born.
- 2:36And so I think there was a lot
- 2:38of like unconscious trauma around just watching your
- 2:42mother, who you idolize decline and like lose
- 2:45control of her body for your whole life,
- 2:47even in young childhood.
- 2:49It's such a hard experience to go through
- 2:52and like witnessing her crying and being afraid
- 2:55and hearing her say how much she hated
- 2:57herself and her body all the time.
- 2:58And she struggled with food addiction.
- 3:00And I realized that once I healed my
- 3:02own and overweight and body image issues and
- 3:04like very insecure and I can't blame her
- 3:07like being diagnosed, that would be one of
- 3:09the worst things to be diagnosed with.
- 3:11Do you feel like that also made you
- 3:12grow up faster than you?
- 3:14Oh, yeah.
- 3:14100%.
- 3:15So I felt like I had to become
- 3:16an adult at a young age.
- 3:17And I felt like because I didn't want
- 3:19to be a burden to my parents and
- 3:21add more stress to their plate of what
- 3:22they're already dealing with, I just held everything
- 3:24inside like I don't want to be a
- 3:26burden.
- 3:27So I'll just compartmentalize.
- 3:29And so I think obviously over time that
- 3:30all accumulates.
- 3:31And then in my tweens, I start like
- 3:33dieting and absorbing like Hollywood in the media.
- 3:36And I grew up in the era of
- 3:37like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, like these
- 3:39tiny little stick thin figures.
- 3:41And you start comparing yourself and going, what's
- 3:43wrong with me and my body?
- 3:44How come I don't look like that?
- 3:45And then you start trying to search for
- 3:48the desperation solution, which is the fake diet
- 3:50narrative that we're sold that doesn't work.
- 3:52Hydroxic, that was my era as a 15
- 3:55year old.
- 3:55Oh, yeah.
- 3:55I remember that.
- 3:57And like the Atkins diet and like the
- 4:00LA weight loss and just all this stuff.
- 4:02And then I started binge eating really heavily
- 4:03into my early 20s.
- 4:04So I had a bad breakup, could barely
- 4:06eat because I wasn't hungry because I was
- 4:07so hurt and I lost weight really quickly.
- 4:09And it was like a big kick to
- 4:11my ego.
- 4:11I'm like, oh, I'm going to reach my
- 4:12goal weight.
- 4:13I'm going to look perfect.
- 4:14It's going to fix everything because the weight
- 4:16loss industry is like, yeah, once you lose
- 4:17weight, you'll finally be happy.
- 4:19And that's such a lie.
- 4:19It doesn't fix anything.
- 4:21So I reached my goal weight and nothing
- 4:23got better.
- 4:24And I lost my period and I became
- 4:25more critical of myself.
- 4:27And then the first memorable binge I had
- 4:29was going to a party.
- 4:30And I remember it was always the mentality.
- 4:32I'm just going to eat the salad I
- 4:33brought.
- 4:34I'm not eating anything else because I don't
- 4:35want to lose weight or gain weight or
- 4:38anything like that.
- 4:39And so I ate the salad.
- 4:40But then I'm like, oh, I really want
- 4:41ice cream cake.
- 4:42So I had a piece of ice cream
- 4:43cake and it triggered the very first like
- 4:44all or nothing where it was like, I
- 4:46shouldn't have had that.
- 4:47No, who cares?
- 4:48Like screw it.
- 4:49I'm going to just eat whatever I want.
- 4:50More ice cream cake, a burger.
- 4:52I took the whole chocolate bar off the
- 4:54table.
- 4:54That was for s'mores around the fire later
- 4:56and went in the bathroom and ate it.
- 4:58And then I'm like, oh, my gosh, I
- 4:59feel so ashamed.
- 4:59And I left the party, got fast food
- 5:01on the way home and until I was
- 5:02so full, I was sick.
- 5:04And then the next morning woke up like
- 5:05bloated puffy, like so much embarrassment, shame.
- 5:07And I was like, I need to go
- 5:08to the gym for three hours today and
- 5:10skip breakfast and lunch.
- 5:11And like that really triggered the heavy restriction
- 5:15over exercise.
- 5:16And then, of course, that being unattainable, lose
- 5:19control and binge and eat like tables full
- 5:20of food.
- 5:21And then I gained about 80 pounds in
- 5:24four months.
- 5:25And then I was the heaviest that I
- 5:26had ever been.
- 5:27And there's a lot of shame and embarrassment
- 5:30that comes along with that.
- 5:32Right.
- 5:32Like feeling unrecognizable, being afraid of being judged.
- 5:36I was treated so differently by men when
- 5:38I was thinner versus gaining all that weight.
- 5:41It's wild to see how people treat people
- 5:43differently, which is not OK.
- 5:44But then I just was like binge eating
- 5:46five or six nights a week, hence the
- 5:47$50,000 on binge food in five years,
- 5:50because I was going to the organic store
- 5:52and spending like 50 to 80 dollars a
- 5:54night on binge foods.
- 5:55But it's organic, so it's.
- 5:57Exactly.
- 5:58It's OK, because it's organic.
- 5:59It's a better choice.
- 6:00It's like, no, I don't care how good
- 6:02of the quality of food is that you're
- 6:03eating.
- 6:04If you're eating like 12 muffins or like
- 6:05a whole table full of food, like it's
- 6:07so destructive on your body.
- 6:09And then I went to an organic group
- 6:11kind of just started coming out like when
- 6:12we got a whole foods here.
- 6:14I remember my dad buying a cake.
- 6:16I was in high high school at the
- 6:17time.
- 6:18And when he bought a cake at Whole
- 6:20Foods and brought it home and he was
- 6:21like, it's OK, because it's from Whole Foods.
- 6:24Yeah, it was such a learning curve for
- 6:26society at the time.
- 6:28100 percent.
- 6:28I know.
- 6:29And that's what I found, like, as I
- 6:30started binge eating, I'm like, oh, these are
- 6:32organic.
- 6:32Like, it's OK.
- 6:33And I didn't even know how to read
- 6:35the ingredients or anything.
- 6:36Right.
- 6:36So and then I'm wondering why I'm bloated
- 6:38after I have these four ginger snap cookies.
- 6:40I'm like, why?
- 6:41They're organic.
- 6:42It shouldn't cause any issues.
- 6:44So then I went through bulimia for six
- 6:46months because I was trying to purge to
- 6:48prevent the weight gain.
- 6:49Like, oh, if I purge, I just won't
- 6:51gain weight.
- 6:51But obviously, that's really hard on every aspect
- 6:53of your body and your being and just
- 6:55makes it easier to gain weight.
- 6:56And I stopped doing that because I was
- 6:58like, I don't want to end up with
- 7:00cardiac issues and I need to take ownership.
- 7:03And so if I'm going to binge, I
- 7:04need to own that and not think that
- 7:06I can just get rid of it through
- 7:08that behavior.
- 7:08So I stopped that.
- 7:09What was your aha moment?
- 7:10Because so many women that do go through
- 7:12an eating disorder of any sort don't just
- 7:14wake up one day and say and have
- 7:16that clarity.
- 7:17Yeah.
- 7:18Well, I kept binging after I stopped purging.
- 7:20So it was like, I think for me,
- 7:22it was two things.
- 7:22The first thing was I don't want to
- 7:25end up having a heart attack at 25
- 7:27or like cause such serious health issues through
- 7:30purging.
- 7:31Like, I knew it was so wrong, but
- 7:32you get addicted to it.
- 7:33You get a dopamine high when you do
- 7:35it.
- 7:35You feel relief when your stomach empties.
- 7:37You feel in some form of control, even
- 7:39though you're out of control.
- 7:40But I think the concern of the serious
- 7:42health issues that I could create for myself
- 7:44if I kept doing it were one of
- 7:46the things that turned me off of it.
- 7:48And like I said, the other thing was
- 7:49I don't know how to deal with this
- 7:50yet, but I am going to take ownership.
- 7:52And so if I binge and I'm uncomfortable,
- 7:54I'm not going to go purge.
- 7:55I have to own the fact of the
- 7:57choice that I just made.
- 7:58And that is a big part of what
- 8:00helped me stop the purge.
- 8:01I mean, I help so many women and
- 8:03stop binging and purging.
- 8:04And I think one of the biggest things
- 8:05is helping them stop the binges, but also
- 8:07helping them understand like this is a full
- 8:10lack of ownership and responsibility.
- 8:12And I am purging thinking that I'm not
- 8:14going to have to deal with the consequences
- 8:15of the fullness, I'll prevent gaining weight.
- 8:17But like, there are such serious consequences to
- 8:20not only binging, but then purging after that
- 8:22and not taking any ownership, responsibility or looking
- 8:24at what we're doing.
- 8:25And obviously there's trauma and there's nervous system,
- 8:27dysregulation and a steep desire for control.
- 8:29And we have to address those layers as
- 8:30we go.
- 8:30But for me, I kept binging for a
- 8:32couple of years.
- 8:33And it just was this slippery slope.
- 8:35And my low point moment, which helped me
- 8:37get on the healing journey, was I was
- 8:40now aware that I was binge eating and
- 8:42I was laying on the couch in pain
- 8:44after a binge.
- 8:44And I was just laying there in tears
- 8:45thinking like, I don't think I'm going to
- 8:47make 30 if I keep doing this to
- 8:49myself, because not only am I physically self
- 8:51-sabotaging and being so destructive with my body,
- 8:53but my negative self-talk, my self-hatred,
- 8:56my self-loathing, the way I'm speaking to
- 8:58myself and treating myself like that's just as
- 9:01unhealthy for your health as it is to
- 9:03be in those, you know, binge eating behaviors.
- 9:05And both of them kind of feed each
- 9:07other, right?
- 9:07Oh, it's hard to get out of that
- 9:09hole.
- 9:11Totally do.
- 9:12And and you can eat really well.
- 9:14But yeah, and you can eat really well
- 9:15and be really mean to yourself and be
- 9:17really critical and judgmental and harsh toward yourself
- 9:19with your thoughts.
- 9:20And that is just as detrimental to your
- 9:22health.
- 9:23And so I was laying there in pain,
- 9:25just so full, so uncomfortable in tears.
- 9:28And I always throw the food in the
- 9:28garbage can because I'm like, as if I
- 9:30would ever go and eat through the garbage.
- 9:31Like, I would never stoop to that level.
- 9:33And about an hour later, after the food
- 9:35settled, I call it the inner critic, the
- 9:37ego mind was like, well, if this is
- 9:38the last time you're going to do this,
- 9:40right?
- 9:40How many of us have been like, this
- 9:41is the last time diet starts tomorrow.
- 9:43I'm going to clean this all up tomorrow
- 9:45and take care of it.
- 9:45This is it.
- 9:46Right.
- 9:46Let's do it.
- 9:47Right.
- 9:48Like, this is the last time I'm going
- 9:48to do this.
- 9:49I might as well like finish the food
- 9:50off because then I'm not going to be
- 9:51able to eat this for a while because
- 9:52I'm going to be back and like trying
- 9:54to gain control mode.
- 9:55And so I went into the kitchen, pulled
- 9:56out my blue garbage can, dug through, pulled
- 9:58out the cookies specifically.
- 9:59They were Oreos and I ate them.
- 10:02And then I went out in the dumpster
- 10:03in the back alley and threw them out
- 10:05there because I didn't finish them.
- 10:06And then I went out later into my
- 10:07dumpster in the back alley of my apartment
- 10:09and pulled the cookies out and ate them
- 10:11again.
- 10:11And I did that a couple more times
- 10:13with like cupcakes and stuff.
- 10:14And I was like, oh, my gosh, who
- 10:16am I?
- 10:17How the hell did this end up to
- 10:18be my life?
- 10:19I don't understand why I'm at such a
- 10:21frickin' low point.
- 10:22I'm alone.
- 10:23I'm overweight.
- 10:24I'm unhealthy.
- 10:25I have red balance in my bank account
- 10:27in the negative all the time.
- 10:28I just ate it in my dumpster.
- 10:30Like, how the hell did this become my
- 10:31life?
- 10:31I literally was like shocked and dumbfounded and
- 10:34the shame, guilt, embarrassment, like all the negative
- 10:36emotions all at once.
- 10:37But I needed that to happen because it
- 10:40was like all this denial.
- 10:41I was in such denial that what I
- 10:43was doing wasn't a big deal when it
- 10:44was such a big deal.
- 10:46But I think what happens when you get
- 10:48in these behaviors, they become familiar and comfortable.
- 10:51Even though you're suffering and it's not serving
- 10:53you, it's what's familiar and comfortable.
- 10:54And the brain, specifically the amygdala in the
- 10:57brain, which is your fight or flight center,
- 10:59likes you to be in comfort.
- 11:01And when you think about trying to do
- 11:03something different, right?
- 11:04Going to be unknown.
- 11:06Who would I be without food?
- 11:08Right?
- 11:08I don't know who I'd be without that
- 11:09being such a big part of my identity.
- 11:11If I wasn't chasing them around the scale,
- 11:13that's scary and uncomfortable.
- 11:15And the amygdala recognizes discomfort as a threat
- 11:18to your survival.
- 11:19So it will try and keep you in
- 11:21what is comfortable and familiar, even if it's
- 11:23not good for you.
- 11:24So that moment like crushed the denial, crushed
- 11:27my comfort zone and the fear of change.
- 11:30And it was like the suffering is now
- 11:32so big.
- 11:33I cannot afford on any level to not
- 11:35do something about it.
- 11:36So I got on the healing journey.
- 11:38I healed myself.
- 11:39I did not get help.
- 11:40I had one poor experience with a psychologist
- 11:42who I just felt very judged.
- 11:44I told her about everything I just told
- 11:46you for the first time.
- 11:46And she's like, just don't go to the
- 11:48store and buy the food.
- 11:49Just love yourself.
- 11:50And I'm like, you know, we can't have
- 11:51to still eat.
- 11:52You know, like that's the thing about addiction
- 11:54when it comes to food.
- 11:55Like with some things you can take it
- 11:57out of your life, you know, and take
- 11:59it out of your circle with food.
- 12:01You have to eat to survive.
- 12:02So it's not as if you can just
- 12:03stop eating.
- 12:04No, you can't stop eating.
- 12:05And it's so much bigger than the food.
- 12:07And so after that happened, I was triggered
- 12:09to go binge them.
- 12:10Like, I need to figure this out myself.
- 12:11I don't know what it's going to look
- 12:12like.
- 12:12I have no knowledge, but I'm going to
- 12:14figure it out.
- 12:15And so I got on the journey.
- 12:16It was very physical, emotional, energetic, even spiritual.
- 12:19It was very healing.
- 12:21And I'm happy to just pause there and
- 12:23like, if you want to go into any
- 12:24of the snippets of the healing, I'm happy
- 12:25to.
- 12:25But that's what got me on the journey.
- 12:28But I knew nothing that I know now.
- 12:29Like, I literally went to school to become
- 12:31like a entertainment reporter and then a PR
- 12:34person.
- 12:35Like, this was not on my radar, but
- 12:37I'm so grateful that I got rerouted.
- 12:40What was part of your healing journey?
- 12:42What was the first thing that you did
- 12:43after you went to the therapist?
- 12:45You're like, this isn't any help.
- 12:46Did you start journaling?
- 12:47Did you start clean?
- 12:48Did you clean out your kitchen?
- 12:49What were kind of some of your first
- 12:51steps?
- 12:52So, and how, how I did it is
- 12:54not how I do with my clients because
- 12:56everyone is different and needs a bit of
- 12:57a different approach.
- 12:58So I just like to say that right
- 12:59away.
- 13:00But what I was curious about right off
- 13:02the bat was sugar because I'm like, I
- 13:03can offer the life of me.
- 13:04Just eat a little bit of sugar and
- 13:06like go away from it.
- 13:07Like I start and I can't stop.
- 13:08So I started researching about sugar and I'm
- 13:10reading and learning that it's like 10 times
- 13:12more addictive than cocaine.
- 13:13It's giving me a drug like high, like
- 13:16other hard drugs.
- 13:17And I'm like, oh my gosh, no wonder
- 13:19I keep losing control.
- 13:21And then I started learning about how sugar
- 13:23feeds candida.
- 13:24And I was working at a health clinic
- 13:25at the time where they had tested me
- 13:27for that, which is unhealthy overgrowth of different,
- 13:30you know, fungal and things like that and
- 13:32large intestine.
- 13:32And it makes you crave sugar like crazy
- 13:35and it feeds candida.
- 13:37And then I started learning about wheat and
- 13:39dairy because I'm like, how come when I
- 13:40eat a piece of cheese, I want to
- 13:41eat the whole block.
- 13:42How come when I eat a piece of
- 13:43bread, I want to eat the whole loaf
- 13:44like I was deep and I know not
- 13:46everyone was eating to the volume that I
- 13:49was, but it was just this full loss
- 13:50of control all the time.
- 13:52And so I started cleaning up my eating
- 13:53first actually.
- 13:54I started swapping process sugars for natural.
- 13:58I started trying gluten-free alternatives, dairy-free
- 14:01alternatives.
- 14:02But what was interesting about it was as
- 14:04I started to change the way that I
- 14:05ate, I still wanted to binge on like
- 14:0810 bananas in a jar of natural peanut
- 14:09butter or like 10 gluten-free muffins that
- 14:12I would make or like whatever, just like
- 14:1410 apples, a whole bag of cashews.
- 14:16Like I still wanted to binge and I
- 14:18was.
- 14:19And that's when I had to get really
- 14:21honest with myself that this is so much
- 14:22bigger than the food.
- 14:23Yes, afraid to feel my emotions.
- 14:25I don't like myself.
- 14:27I'm deep in self-hatred.
- 14:29I have no healthy ways to cope.
- 14:30I don't know what's triggering me and I
- 14:32feel very unworthy.
- 14:33So maybe those are the things actually that
- 14:34I need to face and start dealing with
- 14:36it.
- 14:36So that's what I started to do.
- 14:37So that's when I started exploring different self
- 14:39-care practices, journaling, meditation, breath, EFT tapping, more
- 14:43time in nature, walking, yoga, baths, reading, reading
- 14:46lots of self-help books and like starting
- 14:48to feel more empowered with my mindset, starting
- 14:50to give myself permission to feel my emotions.
- 14:52It was freaking terrifying the first time.
- 14:55I literally had convinced myself if I feel
- 14:58my emotions, like the world's gonna crack in
- 15:00half.
- 15:00Like it's something that's gonna happen.
- 15:02So I was like, okay, put on a
- 15:03timer for 30 seconds and just try feeling
- 15:05through something before you go to food.
- 15:07And the first time I did it, it
- 15:09was a confidence booster.
- 15:10It was like, wow, nothing bad happened.
- 15:12Oh my gosh, I just felt, right?
- 15:13So have this belief in yourself that you
- 15:15can actually like build some momentum.
- 15:17And then I started learning about what was
- 15:19triggering me.
- 15:20So I started a list of emotional and
- 15:21binge eating triggers, whether it was like after
- 15:24an epic failure and I binge and then
- 15:25had to reflect on it afterwards.
- 15:27So starting to dedicate time after binging and
- 15:30going, what happened?
- 15:32Why did this happen?
- 15:33We must be willing to dedicate time to
- 15:35look at what's happening, to shift it and
- 15:37overcome it and build awareness.
- 15:38And then I put that list of triggers
- 15:41in every room in my apartment because I'm
- 15:43like, I know I have the list, but
- 15:45in the moment when I'm triggered, I forget.
- 15:47And then I'm like out the door going
- 15:48to the store to buy the food.
- 15:49And so the list was the visual reminder
- 15:51before you just go binge, let's look at
- 15:54what's triggering you and understand the triggers so
- 15:56that you can start shifting them.
- 15:58And so that really helped me build a
- 15:59lot of momentum, self forgiveness, inner child healing,
- 16:04as well as catching negative self-talk and
- 16:06learning how to manage my inner critic and
- 16:08this was over a couple of year period
- 16:11of time.
- 16:11So I wasn't doing all this in a
- 16:12month, like this stuff takes time.
- 16:14And so all of these changes and catching
- 16:16negative self-talk and shifting to apology and
- 16:18forgiveness, complimenting myself, affirmations, reprogramming all the negative
- 16:22self-talk so that I could start to
- 16:24believe in myself and feel worthy and love
- 16:26myself, it takes time to reprogram that subconscious.
- 16:29And as I did all of those things,
- 16:31I stopped binge eating, I stopped emotionally eating,
- 16:33I stopped overeating, I stopped using food as
- 16:35a coping mechanism and fully healed myself, sabotage
- 16:37with food.
- 16:38I learned to love myself and feel worthy
- 16:41and honor my body.
- 16:43I ditched the, you know, chasing the number
- 16:45on the scale and really focused on like
- 16:48being grateful that my body gave me a
- 16:49second chance after everything I put her through.
- 16:51So those are some of the things that
- 16:53I did that really helped me break free
- 16:55of those behaviors and then came the journey
- 16:57of balancing my hormones and learning about all
- 17:00that and balancing my gut and my blood
- 17:02sugar like I did a number on all
- 17:03those things.
- 17:04And so learning about all those things were
- 17:06very empowering for me because then I was
- 17:08able to bring all that into the work
- 17:09I do as well as, you know, the
- 17:11healing, the relationship with food.
- 17:12And then you get into starting a business
- 17:14and that's just a whole other level of
- 17:15healing and like, you know, different things but
- 17:18like you literally don't learn unless you go
- 17:21into it.
- 17:22So those are some of the key pieces
- 17:23that I worked on.
- 17:25And I guess one of the last ones
- 17:26that I think some of your listeners would
- 17:29probably resonate with, maybe even you, but I'm
- 17:30a very big empath.
- 17:32Like I can feel, I'm very intuitive, I
- 17:34can feel everyone's stuff and what I was
- 17:37realizing is I was healing as my intuition
- 17:39got a lot stronger and my ability to
- 17:41feel and tap into people's emotions got stronger
- 17:44because that's what happens when you take the
- 17:46suppression off of your intuitive gifts and it
- 17:48was kind of scary at first.
- 17:51And so I had to learn how to
- 17:52manage my energy, set good boundaries and not
- 17:54take on other people's stuff because otherwise that
- 17:56would trigger me to binge because I'm like,
- 17:58I don't know with my friend and she
- 17:59just dumped all her stuff on me and
- 18:00now I feel crappy and I don't want
- 18:02to feel like this so I'm going to
- 18:03go eat.
- 18:04So managing being an empath is also an
- 18:06important part of this healing too.
- 18:08That is actually one of the hardest things
- 18:10for me personally.
- 18:11I'm not only an empath, but I'm just
- 18:13yeah, I'm an emotional person all around and
- 18:16I've been with my husband for 21 years
- 18:18and he just came last week and goes,
- 18:20you know, even though I've said this over
- 18:22and over again, he came to me, I
- 18:23was like, hey, I was listening to this
- 18:24podcast and they said that women a lot
- 18:27of times suffer with this idea that if,
- 18:29you know, someone says, oh, I don't like
- 18:31this food, they take it as an insult
- 18:33that it's their fault that they don't like
- 18:35the food or the light bulb is out
- 18:37and I say, dang, the light bulb is
- 18:38out.
- 18:38Somehow you feel it's responsible that the light
- 18:40bulb is out and that falls on you.
- 18:42I was like, I've been telling you that
- 18:43for 20 years and yes, that weighs on
- 18:46me in so many different aspects of life
- 18:48and as I've gotten older, it's kind of
- 18:50the wisdom that just comes with age.
- 18:52I have learned to be like, hey, you
- 18:53don't like this particular meal.
- 18:55That's not an insult to me.
- 18:56You're not saying you hate me, go fuck
- 18:58off.
- 18:59You're saying, you know, it's nothing personal.
- 19:01Exactly.
- 19:02But that has been so hard and you
- 19:04do.
- 19:04You want to internalize that and then one
- 19:07of the ways that you often deal with
- 19:08it is the emotional eating.
- 19:10Yeah, a hundred percent or like, you know,
- 19:13I found when I was healing, one of
- 19:15the things was going to family dinners and
- 19:17people being like, what, you're not eating my
- 19:19thing?
- 19:20Like, why?
- 19:20And I'd be like, well, because it gives
- 19:22me a stomach ache and I don't want
- 19:24to feel poorly and so I just had
- 19:25to start being really honest and like, it's
- 19:27got nothing to do with you.
- 19:28It's like, I'm not willing to put things
- 19:29in my body that are going to make
- 19:31me feel poorly than when I walked through
- 19:33the door.
- 19:33But people don't get that because they do,
- 19:35they tie their love or their worth to
- 19:38cooking or the way they provide something to
- 19:40you and then they feel like they're getting
- 19:41rejected but that's their own stuff.
- 19:43So, exactly.
- 19:45One of the things you talk a lot
- 19:46about on your site and in your programs
- 19:48and in your own podcast is the difference
- 19:50between emotional eating versus binge eating.
- 19:53What is the difference?
- 19:54Because I think at some level, most women
- 19:56can identify with both of them.
- 19:58And I think that I speak correctly when
- 19:59I say a lot of times emotional eating
- 20:01can lead to a binge but they are
- 20:03not synonymous.
- 20:05Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 20:05And I think we can start with that.
- 20:07What feels like very innocent emotional eating or
- 20:09unconscious emotional eating.
- 20:10And over time, it can snowball into binge
- 20:12eating.
- 20:12And so, both emotional eating and binge eating,
- 20:15food addiction, bulimia, whatever you want to, whatever
- 20:17you're dealing with, they're all stemming from some
- 20:20form of like emotional reason for eating, right?
- 20:23You're not physically hungry.
- 20:25You're reaching for food out of a space
- 20:27of emotional comfort, stress, whatever.
- 20:29And they're all mechanisms to suppress, numb, avoid,
- 20:33check out, shove down emotions, procrastinate, right, taking
- 20:37steps.
- 20:37So we're using it as a way of
- 20:39comfort, coping, but also to numb and distract.
- 20:41Celebrate as well for sure, which can turn
- 20:43into binge eating a hundred percent.
- 20:46And so what I find is really at
- 20:47the root again of whether it's binge or
- 20:49emotional eating is unworthiness and not feeling good
- 20:51enough.
- 20:51There is some void within you, some lack
- 20:53of self-love that you're trying to fill
- 20:54with food that you're never going to fill
- 20:55with food.
- 20:56And it becomes a punishment whether you're over
- 20:58consuming or you're restricting, you're punishing yourself.
- 21:00Just like if you're over exercising, you're using
- 21:02it as a form of punishment to make
- 21:04up for the overconsumption of food.
- 21:06But when we start with emotional eating, emotional
- 21:09eating could look like you're bored and you
- 21:11have a chocolate bar, but you're not actually
- 21:12physically hungry.
- 21:13You're having a stressful day at work and
- 21:14you pull out one of those mini bags
- 21:16of chips and you just eat it because
- 21:17you're irritated about something.
- 21:20It could be that you have, you finish
- 21:22your dinner and then you look over at
- 21:24your kids plates and you feel guilty because
- 21:26your grandma told you you shouldn't waste food
- 21:27because they're starving kids and out of guilt,
- 21:29you're like, I'm full but I'm going to
- 21:31finish what's on their plate and you're ignoring
- 21:32your fullness cue.
- 21:33But it's guilt that's leading the decision.
- 21:35And then where we start to get into
- 21:36emotional eating, morphing into a little bit of
- 21:38emotional eating over eating is now you're eating
- 21:40two or three mini bags of chips.
- 21:42You might be eating the whole chocolate bar.
- 21:44You're not yet maybe to the point where
- 21:45you're fully losing control or you're eating until
- 21:48you're so full, you feel so unwell.
- 21:50But it's like you're eating and noticing some
- 21:52bloating.
- 21:53You're eating and noticing discomfort, more guilt, regret,
- 21:56frustration, shame, embarrassment, start to kick up post
- 22:00emotional eating.
- 22:01But again, there's still something emotional.
- 22:03Now, there's physical, emotional, energetic.
- 22:06There's all kinds of triggers, but they all
- 22:07fuel something emotional within you that leads to
- 22:10that choice.
- 22:11And then where we start to get into
- 22:12binge eating is the full loss of control.
- 22:14So one of the biggest things that will
- 22:16trigger binge eating is the all or nothing.
- 22:17So you're in a very perfection mindset with
- 22:19food.
- 22:20I'm either all in on my diet, my
- 22:21eating style, trying to be perfect to gain
- 22:23X result, lose weight, heal my gut, whatever.
- 22:26And then when I can't attain that because
- 22:27perfection is not realistic, you're like, well, screw
- 22:30it.
- 22:30Fuck it.
- 22:31Who cares?
- 22:31I'm going to go eat whatever I want.
- 22:32And then you make up for a lost
- 22:34time.
- 22:34You go and eat all the things you
- 22:35were restricting.
- 22:36You go into rebellion and over-consume, right?
- 22:39Or again, because you're in the all or
- 22:41nothing, you're like, whatever, it doesn't matter.
- 22:42I'll try again tomorrow.
- 22:43I'll try again next week.
- 22:44The rest of the week is a write
- 22:45off.
- 22:46And it's just this full overconsumption.
- 22:49I think certain ingredients can definitely amplify the
- 22:51loss of control with food like processed sugar,
- 22:54monosodium glutamate, aspartame, gluten, or dairy for some
- 22:57people.
- 22:58They literally design food products on purpose to
- 23:00make you addicted and to give you a
- 23:02massive dopamine high.
- 23:04Dopamine is the reward neurotransmitter.
- 23:06It makes you feel really good for a
- 23:08short period of time.
- 23:09And so a lot of women have low
- 23:11dopamine and serotonin.
- 23:12And that's one of the reasons they end
- 23:13up emotionally eating or binge eating and losing
- 23:15control because they're chasing that quick high.
- 23:17Certain ingredients can trigger the binge eating.
- 23:18There's also the mentality of like, I need
- 23:20to get all of this out of the
- 23:21house today so that I'm not tempted tomorrow.
- 23:24So you'll eat the whole box of donuts
- 23:25or cookies.
- 23:26And again, it's the loss of control and
- 23:28thinking today's my day and then tomorrow I'll
- 23:30come back on.
- 23:31I'm going to eat it anyways.
- 23:33I'll just go ahead and eat it in
- 23:34one sitting.
- 23:34That was always my mentality.
- 23:37When I was younger, having to deal with
- 23:38my challenges where it was like, I would
- 23:39have a bag of, I would be jealous
- 23:41because my husband could eat one Oreo and
- 23:43make that last a month.
- 23:44Right?
- 23:45Whereas I was kind of like, here's a
- 23:47box of Oreos.
- 23:48I'm going to eat them over anyway.
- 23:49So I'll just eat the entire box today
- 23:51and be done with it.
- 23:53100%.
- 23:53And then we become our own garbage can,
- 23:55thinking that we're better off to eat it
- 23:57than to get rid of it or give
- 23:59it away while you're healing.
- 24:01Because I would rather someone not stuff themselves
- 24:03full of cookies or whatever the thing is
- 24:06and get rid of it or give it
- 24:07away than eat it all and then have
- 24:09that detriment to your health.
- 24:11Obviously you get to the point where when
- 24:13you're fully healed, you can have anything in
- 24:15your house and you're not tempted anymore.
- 24:16And that's such a freeing place to be
- 24:17with that detachment of food and neutrality with
- 24:20food where you get to enjoy it.
- 24:21But it's no longer what's consuming your mind.
- 24:23And I think that's the other piece of
- 24:24binge eating and food addiction.
- 24:26Your mind is consumed with thoughts of food,
- 24:28planning your next binge, planning your next diet,
- 24:30the next restriction.
- 24:31What's for lunch?
- 24:32I got to be careful with my calories
- 24:33because I overdid it with breakfast and I
- 24:36shouldn't have...
- 24:37Like there's just so much analyzation and criticism
- 24:39of food.
- 24:40I need to lose two pounds this week.
- 24:42So I need to be...
- 24:43I'm off my weight loss goals and we're
- 24:44going on that trip in a month and
- 24:45my bathing suit doesn't fit yet.
- 24:47So I need to restrict more and then
- 24:48like going into the trigger, which is like,
- 24:50oh, I had cheese and crackers.
- 24:52The day is ruined.
- 24:52I'm going to freaking eat whatever I want.
- 24:54And then it's just this planning the next
- 24:56binge.
- 24:56I'm going to get all of these things.
- 24:58These are my favorites and it's going to
- 24:59be so good.
- 25:00And then I think the food addiction is
- 25:02this full blown loss of control in the
- 25:04sense of like, you're either trying to control
- 25:06food with diets and restriction and exercise.
- 25:09You're trying to...
- 25:10Like you're losing control with food and you're
- 25:11planning your binges and it's literally all you
- 25:13think about.
- 25:14You leave parties to go to binge.
- 25:16You make up reasons why you can't go
- 25:17visit your family because you know, you probably
- 25:19are feeling unwell from the night before.
- 25:22You may steal food and eat it.
- 25:24I did that, right?
- 25:25It's full bone food addiction.
- 25:26So those to me are some of the
- 25:27different layers of this, but it's all stemming
- 25:29from emotional hunger versus physical hunger.
- 25:33Now, you may have a blood sugar issue,
- 25:35a hormone imbalance, gut issues.
- 25:38Those are physical imbalances that will trigger emotional
- 25:40eating, right?
- 25:41Because our appetite's off, our blood triggers off,
- 25:43we're craving more things.
- 25:44So there are physical emotional eating triggers as
- 25:46well.
- 25:47For people that are listening to this going
- 25:48like, oh my gosh, I can relate to
- 25:50this so much.
- 25:50And they're stuck there right now with this
- 25:52all or nothing mentality.
- 25:54When they're first getting started, do you recommend
- 25:56go do a purge of your kitchen, get
- 25:57rid of the food triggers?
- 25:59Or is there something that they can start
- 26:00doing now to start learning moderation?
- 26:02What's kind of like that starting step?
- 26:04Yeah, I think every person is different.
- 26:06And I think that, like I have some
- 26:08clients who they don't need to get anything
- 26:11out of their kitchen.
- 26:12It's a matter of understanding what's triggering them.
- 26:14So I always say the first step is
- 26:16just being honest with yourself that I am
- 26:17dealing with emotional eating now that I'm hearing
- 26:19and learning.
- 26:20I think I'm actually dealing with that or
- 26:22I feel like I am dealing with binge
- 26:23eating.
- 26:24And so I actually want to start understanding
- 26:25what's triggering me because understanding my triggers is
- 26:28incredibly important because your triggers are teachers and
- 26:30they're trying to show you where you're out
- 26:31of alignment.
- 26:32Something needs attention or something needs healing.
- 26:35So actually starting to write that list of
- 26:37triggers, even post emotional eating episode or binge
- 26:40start adding to that list and building awareness
- 26:42of your triggers.
- 26:43And why do you go to food for
- 26:44comfort?
- 26:45Are you wanting to numb out, check out,
- 26:47are you afraid of feeling your feelings?
- 26:48I think actually building some awareness around why
- 26:51you're doing what you're doing is important to
- 26:53do before you just purge the kitchen now.
- 26:55I think for some people if you're like
- 26:56I would feel a lot safer and more
- 26:58comfortable if I got certain things out of
- 27:01my house for now to help me gain
- 27:02some traction like that's what I did.
- 27:04That felt really good for me because no
- 27:05matter how many times I brought sugar back
- 27:07into the house, how many times we brought
- 27:08dairy back into the house while I was
- 27:09struggling, I kept losing control.
- 27:12And one of the ways I gain traction
- 27:14other than what I just mentioned about understanding
- 27:16triggers and building awareness was keeping certain foods
- 27:19out of the house for a while so
- 27:20that it would help me build some momentum.
- 27:21So some people that's beneficial for some people
- 27:23don't necessarily need to do that or we
- 27:26bring alternatives.
- 27:27It's never about restriction.
- 27:28It's like let's bring in alternatives that will
- 27:30replace these things but not give you the
- 27:32big addictive dopamine high and the desire to
- 27:34want to binge and lose control.
- 27:35They'll be supportive of your body.
- 27:37You can have anything you want to eat
- 27:38but let's improve the quality of the ingredients
- 27:41so that you don't eat the whole thing,
- 27:42right?
- 27:43And then for some women who have more
- 27:44of a serious binge eating issue or food
- 27:46addiction, there may be a period of time
- 27:48where even like baking might not feel comfortable
- 27:50because they just know even if they make
- 27:52a healthy batch of cookies with like coconut
- 27:55sugar and gluten-free flour, they still might
- 27:56eat them all and it's because there's so
- 27:58many other like the nervous system needs to
- 28:00be regulated.
- 28:01They need to start a self-care practice.
- 28:03We need to get their hormones supported like
- 28:04blood sugar.
- 28:05There's so many things going on within that
- 28:08needs some level of support to start minimizing
- 28:10the amount of episodes that are happening.
- 28:14So yeah, I'm just sharing a lot of
- 28:15scenarios because I think it's going to look
- 28:17different for everyone and then the other thing
- 28:19I would prioritize is starting to build a
- 28:21self-care practice.
- 28:22Women feel so guilty and so wrong for
- 28:25prioritizing themselves and that should have never have
- 28:28been normalized in society.
- 28:30Every single one of us deserves to take
- 28:32time for ourselves to tend to ourselves, our
- 28:34health, our bodies, our emotional needs because how
- 28:36are you ever going to stop these behaviors
- 28:38if you're running around like a chicken with
- 28:40your head cut off not taking any time.
- 28:43It's the more dysregulated you are the more
- 28:44you're going to seek food for comfort to
- 28:46get a break, right?
- 28:47So self-care.
- 28:48To harm ourselves through more exercise or diet
- 28:52versus saying that we deserve to actually treat
- 28:55our bodies right with exercise and the right
- 28:57foods.
- 28:58Yeah, 100% triggers and I'm just kind
- 29:01of curious like once you identify them obviously
- 29:03like life is life.
- 29:05It's going to be hard.
- 29:06You're not going to be able to avoid
- 29:07the negative triggers in your life forever, right?
- 29:09They're going to pop back up.
- 29:10So how do you go about just creating
- 29:11different reactions to those triggers instead of turning
- 29:15to food?
- 29:16Even when it comes to nutrition, you have
- 29:17two great weeks of nutrition and you're like,
- 29:20yes, I've been trying to lose weight.
- 29:21I'm down two pounds.
- 29:23I'm going to reward myself now with this
- 29:25treat.
- 29:26It's like that's where our mind instantly goes
- 29:28because that's what we've seen in society for
- 29:29so long.
- 29:30How do we start breaking those habits?
- 29:32Yeah, I think one of the first things
- 29:33is while you're healing your relationship with food,
- 29:36I'd actually encourage you to not focus on
- 29:37weight loss because one of the things that's
- 29:40triggering the self-sabotage of food is needing
- 29:41to chase the number on the scale and
- 29:43self-worth because when you build your self
- 29:46-worth and you learn how to live more
- 29:48on your power, instead of reacting, you're going
- 29:50to respond to life and the difficulties and
- 29:53discomforts that come your way and I think
- 29:54that's the most vital gift you can give
- 29:56yourself is learning how to love yourself and
- 29:58feel worthy because you can do it.
