- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, Demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam Smith in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Do you ever have thoughts about your current partner, perhaps
- 0:43even an ex partner, that kind of ruminate and just pop into your
- 0:47head and then spiral? It's actually quite a common
- 0:51thought process and it quite often comes from a part of your
- 0:55subconscious mind that wants to protect you, stop you from being
- 0:58hurt, or to try and extract wisdom and learn from the past.
- 1:03My name's Adam and in this hypnosis session, you're going
- 1:06to hear a hypnosis session built for a client that really had
- 1:11non-stop thoughts about a time period before they got together
- 1:17but after their previous marriage.
- 1:19And there was a six year window and they would ruminate on the
- 1:22different relationships, the different situations that their
- 1:25current wife had before they were together.
- 1:29And unfortunately, that wasn't a useful way of thinking.
- 1:32It led to feelings of anxiety and insecurity and
- 1:35obsessiveness. And that wasn't conducive to the
- 1:39kind of relationship that they had.
- 1:41And they felt that it was down to the kind of unsafe
- 1:44environment they had in their childhood.
- 1:46So in this session, it's actually quite a long session
- 1:50and it's different levels of disassociation and perspectives.
- 1:54There's regression to a childhood memory, there's
- 1:57regression to their previous relationship.
- 1:59To extract all of that wisdom to learn that they needed different
- 2:04standards in place even back then to do some parts therapy
- 2:08because there was a part that was really confident and assured
- 2:12that things were going to be fine, and another part that was
- 2:15warning them and trying to protect them from emotional
- 2:18pain. So we needed them to be on the
- 2:19same side rather than working against each other, harnessing
- 2:25the resources they had in the early parts of the relationship
- 2:28and imagining that all of these intrusive thoughts that they're
- 2:31having actually happened earlier.
- 2:33That rather than not knowing until after they were married,
- 2:37imagining that they had all of that information beforehand and
- 2:40it didn't change anything. So there's a lot going on here
- 2:43and it ends with future pacing where they get a sense that
- 2:45they've got evidence that the change has taken place.
- 2:49A lot of the suggestions are very, very specific to the
- 2:53client that I was working with. The childhood memory, the first
- 2:55relationship. At its core though, this is
- 2:58about the parts therapy. It's about the part that wants a
- 3:02great relationship and the part that's trying to keep them safe,
- 3:05working as a team rather than in conflict.
- 3:09And sometimes the clue of conflict is almost like those
- 3:14old fashioned cartoons where you have a devil on one shoulder and
- 3:17an Angel on the other, and they're kind of trying to talk
- 3:19the person into doing something that's a clue of conflict.
- 3:23If you've got a part that says, but you should do this and you
- 3:26said, but I don't want to, that's that kind of dynamic of
- 3:29kind of polarizing parts. And we want to turn that tug of
- 3:33war into a three legged race. So they're actually moving in
- 3:35the same direction. So there's a lot going on here.
- 3:38Hopefully you'll get some value from it.
- 3:40And if you do want something like this but bespoke to you,
- 3:43there will be a link in the description where you can
- 3:46schedule a free consultation call to explore working with me.
- 3:49For now though, find a quiet, comfortable place where you
- 3:52won't be disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 4:11Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 4:20slow, long breath of relaxation. And as you exhale, give
- 4:28permission to just release. Release any stress, any
- 4:34overactive thoughts. Just feel them start to leave
- 4:38your body in that outward breath, breathing in,
- 4:44relaxation, exhaling tension. Each breath takes you deeper and
- 4:53deep, relaxed. That's it.
- 4:56And on the next outward breath, really release your eyelids,
- 5:03relax them, allow them to feel heavy as you realize with your
- 5:07eyes closed how much easier it becomes to focus on the sound of
- 5:15my voice. That's right.
- 5:19And the slower and longer you breathe, the more relaxation you
- 5:26inhale and the more tension you exhale, where each breath
- 5:32enables you to drift deeper and deeper, relaxed.
- 5:40And I want you to feel like it's turning a dial down on any need
- 5:46to think, evaluate, or preempt. That's in drifting to that place
- 5:56of relaxation, where the deeper you breathe, the more relaxed
- 6:01you become. And the more relaxed you become,
- 6:05the deeper you breathe. And as your body relaxes, your
- 6:11imagination awakens. And I want you to think of a
- 6:19beach you've been to before, with clean, soft sand, calm
- 6:26waters, perhaps on a day of blue skies and sunshine.
- 6:35And let's just imagine that this beach, it's completely private.
- 6:41It is just for you. That's it.
- 6:47Breathing in, breathing out. And I want you to imagine the
- 6:54sea is calm, but then imagine temporarily a very short storm
- 7:03comes along and the waves get jumpy, volatile.
- 7:13And I want you to get a feeling that that's natural, that in
- 7:18times of turbulence, it's natural for the waves to be
- 7:23larger, crash harder. But imagine that that short
- 7:30storm fades away, the sunshine returns, and look how naturally
- 7:40the sea returns to being a calm sea of gentle waves.
- 7:47And I want you to get a feeling that for most of your life your
- 7:51mind was like that calm sea. But then something happened.
- 7:59Lots of different things in different directions, kind of
- 8:04like an emotional storm. And while that storm was
- 8:08happening, the waves got bigger. But I want you to get a feeling
- 8:15that throughout it all, you have remained focus on your goal.
- 8:23Your goal is your future, the very thing that you're building.
- 8:28And I want you to get a sense that perhaps the sea is already
- 8:34calm or just becoming calmer. But let's help.
- 8:41I want you to imagine somewhere on this beach is a doorway.
- 8:47And this doorway leads to a memory of your past.
- 8:54But you don't return to the past as you were.
- 8:58You return to the past as you are now, and this door doesn't
- 9:03need to be connected to a building because it's just your
- 9:07imagination. So maybe imagine a wooden door
- 9:13there on the beach, and as I count from 5:00 to 1:00, you
- 9:19will imagine opening the door, walking through the door, and
- 9:23finding yourself back at a childhood home, perhaps when you
- 9:29were just six, 7-8 years old. But you will return at your
- 9:35current age as the observer. If you can imagine the door in
- 9:42front of you, let me know by nodding your head.
- 9:46That's it. 5 Just imagine putting your hand on the handle.
- 9:514 Turning the handle. 3 Opening the door. 2 Walking through the
- 9:57door and one closing the door behind you.
- 10:05Just imagine you're there on someday, perhaps when you as a
- 10:14child were worried. And I want you to imagine nobody
- 10:23can see you except your younger self.
- 10:28And maybe you can recall the layout of that home, certain
- 10:34things that used to be there, maybe clues of volatility, lack
- 10:44of stability. But I want you to seek out the
- 10:50room that you used to sleep in as a child.
- 10:56Imagine knocking on the door, opening the door and going
- 10:59inside, seeing that younger version of you.
- 11:03And I want you to reassure that child that you are them from the
- 11:13future, and even at 7 or 8 years old, they might be skeptical.
- 11:22So I want you to share with them a secret that only they would
- 11:27know. There's evidence that you are
- 11:31them in the future. And when you've established that
- 11:40trust, let me know if I'm nodding your head.
- 11:50That's in. And all I want you to do is
- 11:53listen. Is maybe that younger version of
- 11:57you had beliefs and worries, thoughts and fears but no one to
- 12:04share them with and just listen. And maybe that child is sharing
- 12:14feelings of feeling unsafe, of not getting the attention or
- 12:20reassurance they need. But I want you to imagine what
- 12:27it would be like to give that child everything that they
- 12:33really needed and wanted back then.
- 12:35A feeling of safety, of reassurance, perhaps even
- 12:41understanding. And as you do that, see their
- 12:47facial expression and their body language change.
- 12:53And tell them. Tell them certain key things
- 12:57that you know happens in the future and that they can handle
- 13:03it. That in some ways this time in
- 13:08their life will actually lead to high levels of success.
- 13:17Tell them you believe in them. But most of all, tell them that
- 13:21they are loved and they are worthy.
- 13:25They are good, they deserve good things and they deserve love.
- 13:32And I want you to imagine giving a resource to that child that
- 13:40you really wish you had back then.
- 13:44Maybe confidence, maybe self belief, maybe perspective.
- 13:52But imagine handing over a glowing ball of energy to that
- 13:57childlike version of you. See them absorbing it.
- 14:03They're in their chest and feel that shift rippling all the way
- 14:09from their time to yours. A sense then.
- 14:16Your worth isn't connected to what you've achieved, how you
- 14:22look, status or money. Your worth is irrefutable simply
- 14:34because you are. I don't want you to imagine that
- 14:39you can return to this room to help this child with anything
- 14:44else in the future. But for now, tell them you'll be
- 14:46back. Give them a hug, tell them
- 14:50they're loved and worthy and you can see see them drift off to
- 14:57sleep with a smile on their face as they seem calm, relaxed and
- 15:06safe. But as you leave the door, I
- 15:13want you to imagine the door takes you to a new house in a
- 15:21previous relationship. And let's walk through that
- 15:27door. And when you find yourself in
- 15:31that new house, perhaps shortly after the arrival of a new
- 15:36child, but you're there at your current age, which means you
- 15:43also exist at the time that you were living there.
- 15:48When you arrive in that house, let me know by nodding your
- 15:50head. And I want you to imagine
- 15:58finding yourself there, alone, or perhaps with a small baby
- 16:04nearby, and you can see yourself those years younger.
- 16:15And the difference is, as you know, everything that happens
- 16:19from that point onwards. I want you to consider this an
- 16:27intervention. You can't change the past, but
- 16:33you can change the meaning. And when you found that younger
- 16:39version of you, yet still an adult, let me know by nodding
- 16:43your head. And I want you to tell them the
- 16:51things that they're tolerating, that they don't need to.
- 16:55Criticism, power dynamics, game playing.
- 17:02And maybe you see the look of shame or embarrassment or
- 17:08awkwardness on that younger version of you.
- 17:14You could also tell that younger version of you why you're doing
- 17:17it. Putting your children first,
- 17:23loyalty, doing what you think is right.
- 17:29But I want you to tell that younger version of you that it
- 17:34doesn't help that you shrinking to not rock the boat doesn't
- 17:42mean that boat isn't going to go into the direction it's going to
- 17:47go to anyway. And I want you to coach that
- 17:52younger version of you to adopt the standards that you now have
- 17:59as you recall that time when you said no more.
- 18:06And I want you to articulate that to that younger version of
- 18:08you so that your standards become their standards.
- 18:16And this creates a new timeline. We can't change the timeline
- 18:21that has already happened, but I want you to see what would
- 18:26happen if that younger version of you adopted the standards
- 18:35that you now have. It may not salvage your
- 18:40relationship, but it may salvage your self esteem, your
- 18:44confidence, yourself worth, and even your soul.
- 18:48And just imagine seeing that new timeline, and if you get a sense
- 18:54that the standards that you now have back then would have
- 18:58helped, let me know by nodding your head.
- 19:01And that becomes evidence that your current standards are the
- 19:08right standards, which means that you've learned from your
- 19:13past. I want you to find a different
- 19:18room in that house that's empty as you say goodbye to that
- 19:22younger version of you. And in that room, we're going to
- 19:26invite two different parts into that room.
- 19:33The first part is the part that craves love, connection and
- 19:39trust. That intuitive part that just
- 19:44knows that things are going to be OK and is that version of
- 19:50you. That part enters the room.
- 19:56Maybe you see them looking confident and self assured,
- 20:00certain. And when they've arrived in that
- 20:04room, let me know about nodding your head.
- 20:08But now I want you to invite another part that clearly exists
- 20:15and insecure, perhaps even paranoid, maybe even suspicious
- 20:22part. That part that likes to go down
- 20:27rabbit holes, that is always wondering when the next shoe
- 20:35could drop. And when that part enters the
- 20:41room, maybe they look different, fidgety, anxious, everything you
- 20:49would expect and overthink it to look like.
- 20:54And when they've arrived and you can see them, let me know by
- 20:57nodding your head. That's right.
- 20:59And I want you to thank both parts because they truly have
- 21:06good intentions. The part that is trusting and
- 21:11certain and confident, well, that part helps you to be
- 21:17decisive. There are some people when a
- 21:21relationship fails, it almost taints every possibility and
- 21:29sabotages any possibility of happiness.
- 21:33That part ensured you found someone right for you.
- 21:38So thank that part because without them you wouldn't have
- 21:43your new relationship and see them smile and take that.
- 21:49But you can also take that anxious, fidgety part, thank
- 21:55them for their intention, and ask them if their intention was
- 22:00to protect you, to warn you, a form of due diligence, to make
- 22:07sure you're not stepping into something that could be a
- 22:10mistake. And if that part agrees that
- 22:14that's its true intention, let me know by nodding your head.
- 22:22And you could be grateful for the intention, but not grateful
- 22:27for the way it's executing that intention.
- 22:32Because it's executing that intention by playing scenarios
- 22:37again and again and again, thinking about all of the what
- 22:41ifs, all of the downsides. But what if that doesn't protect
- 22:49you from a bad relationship, but sabotage a good one?
- 22:53And I want you to share that with that part because it truly
- 22:59wants to help you. And maybe it didn't realise that
- 23:05it's potentially taking a good thing and making it worse.
- 23:14And I want you to ask that part if it's willing to help you in a
- 23:18new way. And if it agrees, let me know by
- 23:22nodding your head. Because this part is simply
- 23:28hyper vigilant. It's looking for clues when
- 23:32there's no crime. It's looking for red flags and
- 23:39the flags are green. And all I want you to do is ask
- 23:44this part to change its threshold.
- 23:51Some people have had a smoke alarm that's too sensitive.
- 23:55Just making some food sets it off, but equally, if the smoke
- 24:01alarm never went off, if there was a fire, what's the point in
- 24:06having it? And I want you to ask that part
- 24:12to only help you analyse things if there is truly something that
- 24:23would affect your evaluation of the relationship.
- 24:30And maybe it's way too sensitive.
- 24:35And now you only need to have this part helping you if there
- 24:40is truly something going on. And I want you to think back to
- 24:45perhaps red flags that you missed in your previous
- 24:49relationship and ask this part to use that relationship as a
- 24:56training ground. That if things like that, that
- 25:00you tolerated that in hindsight you shouldn't come up in this
- 25:04new relationship, then it will warn you.
- 25:10But set the parameter that it has to be things from when the
- 25:15relationship started to the present.
- 25:20That anything before you started dating doesn't count.
- 25:26And if that part agrees, let me know by nodding your head.
- 25:35And now all three of you in the room want the same thing.
- 25:40A good relationship of love, respect, trust, but also that
- 25:47leads to a wonderful future. And if all three agree, imagine
- 25:52making a pact perhaps, where one hand goes on, another goes on
- 25:59another. Like a pledge, an agreement, a
- 26:02consensus. And when all parts agree, let me
- 26:07know by nodding your head. That's it, and you can tell both
- 26:16parts you trust them to take this new responsibility.
- 26:24The initial part you need their help to be more trusting, to be
- 26:29more certain, and the other part to only warn you if there's real
- 26:34cause for warnings. All parts are now in harmony,
- 26:40helping you move forward without the need for overthinking.
- 26:47Unless you leave the room. Imagine the door taking you to
- 26:53another memory. This time you're the observer of
- 27:00your first date with your current wife.
- 27:06Imagine opening the door, walking through, and you are now
- 27:09an invisible observer. No one can see you, not even
- 27:15that younger version of you. And I want you to see yourself
- 27:21that very first meeting when the door opens.
- 27:26You had complete trust, certainty, extreme certainty.
- 27:36I want you to see that you were aligned.
- 27:40You trusted your intuition. You knew what you found was
- 27:43right. This is the first part truly
- 27:50activated. I want you to see perhaps that
- 27:56first kiss, holding hands, the conversations, but I want you to
- 28:03imagine we're going to invent a new date.
- 28:08Perhaps somewhere between your second, third or fourth date,
- 28:11we're going to create a new one and you get to imagine the place
- 28:18and this time step into that version of you that was
- 28:23absolutely certain that this was the right relationship for you.
- 28:29Imagine being in a particular, perhaps restaurant, particular
- 28:35location, the kind of place perfect for a conversation.
- 28:42And I want you to imagine asking them about the period, perhaps a
- 28:49six year period, when they were dating but before they found
- 28:53you. Notice your voice is not
- 28:58insecure, not intimidated, not worried at all, but just
- 29:04curious. And imagine observing as what
- 29:11you hear doesn't affect that version of you at all.
- 29:19In fact, your mannerisms are a nodding head smiles.
- 29:26Nothing said deters you from knowing that this is the
- 29:32relationship that you desire. And when you're certain that
- 29:39even after you know everything, it wouldn't have changed a thing
- 29:45in your decisions, let me know about nodding your head.
- 29:52Rewind it. Step into the version of you
- 29:55imagine having the same conversations now from a first
- 29:58person perspective, but feel like it was your second, third,
- 30:02or fourth date. Casual, confident, curious.
- 30:08You share about your dates, they share about theirs.
- 30:13Short relationships, longer relationships.
- 30:16None of it bothers you at all. As your inner dialogue is
- 30:20saying, none of this matters. It doesn't matter.
- 30:29Because if nothing could have deterred you then, then any
- 30:34thoughts about the past can now be considered futile.
- 30:40And I want you to think of what kind of sabotage it would have
- 30:45done to your career to spend lots of time or thinking time
- 30:50pursuing futile things. You already have a standard that
- 30:57just says I don't do that. And I want you to feel that
- 31:04standard of what you do and don't do is now applying to
- 31:11those thoughts of the past and worries of the future that it
- 31:17has to be genuine concerns. Otherwise it simply isn't
- 31:23important. And if you feel that you can
- 31:27activate that new standard, that new threshold to be able to dial
- 31:34down the volume or just shut them down with a response like
- 31:41who cares, doesn't matter, and feel that's true, let me know by
- 31:45nodding your head. And you might need to train that
- 31:54part. There may be echoes of that
- 31:57anxious part that come back and you need to remind it that's
- 32:02below the threshold. That is them not meeting their
- 32:08responsibilities. And now I want you to leave that
- 32:16imaginary day, but with a feeling of if nothing could
- 32:20deter you even with all the information, then the
- 32:25information isn't needed now. And I want you to imagine
- 32:29returning. Returning to a home where you
- 32:34live and imagine seeing a full length mirror.
- 32:40And in that mirror, I want you to imagine it represents the
- 32:45future. I want you to imagine stepping
- 32:51through the mirror and being an observer.
- 32:55Perhaps if yourself in six or 12 months time, you're observing
- 33:01yourself. But I want you to see how that
- 33:04future version of you reminds you a lot more of that version
- 33:10of you on your very first date. Self assured, confident, clear,
- 33:16high standards. And I want you to see how you
- 33:22being that way enhances the relationship.
- 33:27I want you to see that future version of you focusing on the
- 33:31things that matter. I want you to see yourself with
- 33:37a new source of income, building a wonderful future with your
- 33:42wife, making progress towards those goals.
- 33:48And I want you to see an absence of any of those facial
- 33:54expressions or body language that you've had when you've been
- 33:58having those intrusive thoughts. It just seems to be gone.
- 34:04In fact, I want you to see yourself with the look of peace
- 34:12and I want you to step into that future version of you and just
- 34:15check. Check what it feels like to have
- 34:18thoughts that are constructive, useful, that move you forward.
- 34:26Because that's evidence of an absence of those old thoughts
- 34:30that used to ruminate, take you down rabbit holes.
- 34:34And if you can feel what it would feel like to be in that
- 34:38future feeling that wonderful sense of peace and an absence of
- 34:45those ruminating thoughts, let me know by nodding your head.
- 34:53And I want you to locate that feeling of internal peace, maybe
- 34:58in your gut, your chest, or somewhere else, and just imagine
- 35:02expanding it, amplifying it. Notice a calmness in your inner
- 35:10dialogue. And I want you to try and come
- 35:14up with a ruminating thought, the kind of thing that would
- 35:17have had you spiraling in the past and almost smile when it
- 35:22comes up as you remind that part.
- 35:26Then we don't do that. It doesn't matter.
- 35:30It doesn't meet the threshold. And if you feel that you can
- 35:35successfully start to see it arrive and then nip it in the
- 35:44bud, see a flicker and then dampen it straight away, let me
- 35:48know by nodding your head. That's it.
- 35:52And as time goes on, you'll get better and better at making
- 35:59these old thoughts so mundane, almost like grey, unimportant,
- 36:08boring. And it just becomes a fleeting
- 36:14thought that doesn't occupy your attention or your time and just
- 36:21fades away. And I want you to return through
