Latest / The Slippery Slope / The NT Is Arming Undertrained Officers… What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

- 0:01Let me start with something blunt, because subtlety clearly
- 0:05is not working anymore. Australia has reached a point
- 0:09where governments are so desperate, so incompetent and so
- 0:13terrified of admitting they've failed that they're now arming
- 0:18people who aren't fully trained and calling it public public
- 0:23safety. We're watching the slow collapse
- 0:26of police standards in real time.
- 0:28We're watching governments cut corners like they're speed
- 0:32running a video game. We're watching leadership
- 0:35pretend that almost trained is the same as properly trained.
- 0:41And the NT government has just taken this insanity to a whole
- 0:46new level. They're handing guns to PPS OS
- 0:51officers who do not have full police training.
- 0:54And they're expecting the public to smile, nod and pretend this
- 0:59is normal. It's not normal, it's not safe,
- 1:02it's not responsible, it's not policing.
- 1:06It's stupidity dressed up as policy.
- 1:10And and the worst part, the worst part?
- 1:13They know exactly what they're doing.
- 1:16They know the risks, They know the consequences.
- 1:19They know people will get hurt, but they're doing it anyway
- 1:24because it's easier than fixing the real problem.
- 1:27Their own failure to recruit and retain fully trained police
- 1:32officers. This is not leadership.
- 1:35This is not strategy. This is not public safety.
- 1:38This is desperation, armed and dangerous.
- 1:44I'm Jay Fallon. This is the slippery slope.
- 1:59So let's go through a Quick guide to recognising when your
- 2:03government has lost the plot, or as I like to call it, a
- 2:07government stupidity checklist. Let's run through the NT
- 2:11government's decision using a simple check checklist.
- 2:16If you tick all the boxes, congratulations, your government
- 2:18is officially in. We have, we have no idea what
- 2:22we're doing, territory. First box, create a policing
- 2:27role that isn't fully trained? Tick.
- 2:30PPS OS, they're cheaper, faster, and conveniently under
- 2:35qualified. Second box, Give them firearms
- 2:39anyway. Tick.
- 2:41Because nothing says responsible governance like army people who
- 2:46haven't completed full police training.
- 2:49Third box. Pretend they've had the same
- 2:53training as constables tick, except for the part that
- 2:58actually matters, understanding crime and investigating it. 4th
- 3:04Box Ignore the fact that every arrest is an investigation tick.
- 3:11Who needs legal knowledge when you've got handcuffs and
- 3:15enthusiasm? All right #5 Ignore the fact
- 3:20that every use of force is an investigation tick.
- 3:25Just hope no one asked complicated questions later.
- 3:29Why would they? Number six?
- 3:32Hope the public doesn't notice the difference.
- 3:35Tick. Just smile, wave and say public
- 3:39safety a few times. Last one wait for the inevitable
- 3:44disaster. Tick.
- 3:47Then you act shocked, you blame training gaps, you announce a
- 3:51review and then you repeat. Tick, tick, tick, tick.
- 3:55That's exactly what'll happen if you've ticked all seven boxes
- 3:58and the NT government has you're not dealing with leadership,
- 4:02you're dealing with improvisation.
- 4:05That's all. You're dealing with the the
- 4:08government's message. Don't worry, they can shoot.
- 4:12What else do you need? That's, that's really what
- 4:15they're saying here. According to the ABC in the
- 4:18article, the NT Police, public safety officers, Ppsos have now
- 4:26received the same training as constables when it comes to
- 4:31carrying guns and making arrests.
- 4:35Except for one tiny, just one tiny detail.
- 4:38They haven't been trained in serious crime investigations.
- 4:42You know, the part of policing that actually teaches you what
- 4:48crime is, how to identify it, how to investigate it, and how
- 4:53to make lawful decisions. But apparently in the NT, that's
- 4:58just optional. This is the level of thinking
- 5:02we're dealing with. Let me spell it out.
- 5:06This is dangerous and they know it.
- 5:09As someone I've actually done the job, I've done policing.
- 5:15Let me be brutally honest. Training someone to shoot is not
- 5:20training them to police. Training someone to arrest put
- 5:24on some handcuffs is not training them to investigate.
- 5:28Training someone to respond is not training them to understand
- 5:32the law. Every arrest is an
- 5:34investigation. Every use of force is an
- 5:37investigation. Every decision to draw a firearm
- 5:42is an investigation. If you don't understand crime,
- 5:47if you don't understand the law, you can't enforce crime, you
- 5:53can't enforce the law. These Ppsos, again, through no
- 6:01fault of their own, I suppose they do not have the depth of
- 6:06training required to safely carry a firearm or make lawful
- 6:11arrests. But sure, let's arm them anyway.
- 6:14What could possibly go wrong? Here's what's going to happen
- 6:19and it's it's not a maybe this will happen.
- 6:22We're going to see unlawful arrests without a doubt,
- 6:26unlawful detentions, 100% unlawful use of force.
- 6:32We're going to see civilians being shot unnecessarily.
- 6:37That will happen in my opinion. We will see officers panicking
- 6:42under pressure. We will see a misinterpretation
- 6:45of behaviour as being criminal. We're going to see botched
- 6:51assessments of crime scenes. We're going to see skyrocketing
- 6:56complaints, people complaining about unuseful, unlawful use of
- 7:00force. We're going to see lawsuits that
- 7:03will cost taxpayer possibly millions and the government.
- 7:09Then they're going to act shocked.
- 7:11They'll they'll hold a press conference 100%.
- 7:13They'll blame training gaps, they'll promise a review,
- 7:18They'll quietly settle lawsuits, and they'll pretend no one could
- 7:23have predicted this. Who could have thought?
- 7:25Who could have thought this was going to happen?
- 7:28Except everyone could. Everyone with policing
- 7:32experience concede that this will happen.
- 7:35This isn't a surprise waiting to happen.
- 7:39It's a disaster waiting to be scheduled.
- 7:43As former Prime Minister would say, scheduled.
- 7:47Listen, the government is dressing a gaping wound with a
- 7:51Band-Aid and telling the public everything is under control.
- 7:56Don't worry, they've had the same training.
- 7:58Except they haven't, and they know they haven't.
- 8:01This is deception dressed up as policy and the consequences will
- 8:06be real. So listen, the final thing to
- 8:14say I think about this, let's be straight up, the NT government
- 8:21is arming, arming people who are not fully trained.
- 8:25They're cutting corners, they're lowering standards, they are
- 8:29gambling with public safety and they're setting these PPS OS
- 8:34these officers up to fail. This isn't just a bad idea, it's
- 8:40a dangerous one and unless someone calls it out, we will
- 8:45all be dealing with the fallout. As usual, this is just my
- 8:52opinion. I'm Jay Fallon.
- 8:55This is the slippery slope. Or maybe you're watching it on
- 8:58Aussie. Please watch.
- 9:00Australia needs to wake up. This is all just my opinion.
- 9:06Thanks for listening. They just.
