- 0:00Speaker 1: On air and I have radio.
- 0:03Speaker 2: She's on The Money Radio Show.
- 0:07Speaker 1: With Victoria Divines.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Starts now, Oh, hello and welcome to this.
- 0:11Speaker 3: She's on the Money Radio Show podcast, the radio show
- 0:14Speaker 3: podcast for millennials who want financial freedom. And now we've got,
- 0:18Speaker 3: speaking of podcasts, the host of the Australian Podcast Awards,
- 0:23Speaker 3: Mitch Tury and winner of another Australian Podcast Award, Victoria Devine.
- 0:28Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, Mitch, how good is this? We're talking
- 0:31Speaker 4: about podcasts on a podcast pod, Sash.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It's meta, everybody. Let's talk about the forecast in the
- 0:38Speaker 1: weather and that way we can get really met at
- 0:40Speaker 1: every kind of cast there is.
- 0:41Speaker 4: I'm really excited about this award actually because I worked
- 0:45Speaker 4: really hard to get this. If we're honest, obviously you
- 0:47Speaker 4: guys have heard me say Budge direct intro and solved
- 0:49Speaker 4: a million times. But they gave us so much creative
- 0:53Speaker 4: control on a really big campaign this year. We worked
- 0:55Speaker 4: really well with them and we made sure that it
- 0:58Speaker 4: was really organic and that our community love it, which
- 1:00Speaker 4: I think is the most important thing for me. That
- 1:02Speaker 4: it just really resonates with our community and we got
- 1:04Speaker 4: an award for it, So I think.
- 1:07Speaker 2: That's the best way to do it, like budget directs.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Like when you actually have a product that you're sponsored
- 1:11Speaker 3: by that you actually love, it is so easy just
- 1:14Speaker 3: to work it in organically because you love it and
- 1:17Speaker 3: you use it genuinely. So that's what happens when you
- 1:19Speaker 3: do that, you get an award for it just for
- 1:21Speaker 3: being you.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Absolutely so, I absolutely loved it. I feel very grateful
- 1:25Speaker 4: to work in this space and also to just work
- 1:27Speaker 4: with my community every day, like it is just so
- 1:30Speaker 4: fun and I feel like that was one of my
- 1:32Speaker 4: favorite things at the Pod Awards, which was that just
- 1:34Speaker 4: like overwhelming sense of community and that everyone's kind of
- 1:37Speaker 4: got everyone's back, and we were talking about things and
- 1:40Speaker 4: just being like, oh, if you don't know, like, I'll
- 1:42Speaker 4: have a chat to you after this, I'll show you
- 1:43Speaker 4: what we do. Because it's kind of like Podland is
- 1:46Speaker 4: still a bit like the wild West.
- 1:48Speaker 5: People don't really know what they're doing. But so far,
- 1:51Speaker 5: so good, guys.
- 1:51Speaker 2: So you're saying that the thousand dollars under your seat.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Was now it was right, it was lie Mitch was lying.
- 1:57Speaker 4: At the Podcast Awards, he told everybody there was a
- 2:00Speaker 4: thousand dollars under my seat, and then there wasn't trap.
- 2:02Speaker 1: There was. Actually there was a second joke. So my
- 2:04Speaker 1: first joke you'll hear in today's episode, but I'll give
- 2:06Speaker 1: you an exclusive pod joke number two. So I said,
- 2:09Speaker 1: Victoria Devine he had the first joke, and then I said, no,
- 2:11Speaker 1: Victoria is not. Actually here's she's stuck in Melbourne. She
- 2:14Speaker 1: didn't budget the trip budgeted.
- 2:19Speaker 4: You guys are laughing because you know I would have
- 2:20Speaker 4: budgeted for that tally. There was funny because that never
- 2:22Speaker 4: would have happened.
- 2:23Speaker 3: There wasn't a thousand bucks under her seat. There was
- 2:25Speaker 3: probably eight thousand bucks. It was one of her bags
- 2:27Speaker 3: that she was probably carrying, right Mitch.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Use you know what was under my seat? This fair
- 2:33Speaker 4: wine I got before we went in.
- 2:36Speaker 1: We needed that.
- 2:37Speaker 4: It was a theater style event, and I was like,
- 2:40Speaker 4: I am not going in here with just one champagne,
- 2:42Speaker 4: so I ordered too, stuck one under my champs Can
- 2:44Speaker 4: I just say lass is because I am a genius.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You're a superstar. The funny part was v and I
- 2:51Speaker 1: walked out of the auditorium where I stepped off the stage.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Let's go have a drink and celebrate your big, big success.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Then we go out the way to walks up to
- 2:57Speaker 1: V and I and goes, Hi, congratulations on win. Can
- 3:00Speaker 1: I interest if you want a chicken corma or a
- 3:03Speaker 1: bottle of chicken?
- 3:04Speaker 5: Oh my gosh. It was so weird.
- 3:05Speaker 4: So it was a stand up event right, so theater
- 3:08Speaker 4: style event. And then straight after the event there was
- 3:10Speaker 4: like drinks and mingling of food, and I think Mitch
- 3:12Speaker 4: and I were waiting to get like a little spring
- 3:14Speaker 4: roll or something, you know, food like yeah, yeah, money bags,
- 3:18Speaker 4: anything fried turn out of ten to me. They had
- 3:21Speaker 4: bowls going around with mashed potato and curry what I
- 3:26Speaker 4: don't know, but like so good. Everybody's holding glasses and
- 3:29Speaker 4: then what expected to hold a bowl of curry and
- 3:32Speaker 4: not going it everywhere? But then all of the award
- 3:35Speaker 4: winners we had our glasses of champagne, our award in
- 3:38Speaker 4: another hand, like how were we ever going to eat
- 3:41Speaker 4: the curry? So when we got back to the hotels,
- 3:43Speaker 4: Steve and I ordered a really big pizza.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Oh nice. I had to stand there talking to Sandra
- 3:50Speaker 1: Sally eating a ghul lash.
- 3:51Speaker 3: It on the show We should talk about the show today.
- 3:56Speaker 3: It was actually rack Victoria nearly died of a heart
- 4:00Speaker 3: attack after.
- 4:01Speaker 4: She that's the most mortifying sound that whoever been recorded.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm going to use that as my ringtone from now.
- 4:07Speaker 2: It is amazing.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I would be like, who's having a feat?
- 4:11Speaker 3: We talk about Black Friday sales again? Are we going
- 4:13Speaker 3: to give your heads up? Because we're still amidst them
- 4:16Speaker 3: all some of the biggest deals and some of the
- 4:18Speaker 3: biggest things you can get involved in, but also.
- 4:21Speaker 5: The most excitingly.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, well, the buy now the after.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Reforms in the buy now, pay later sector here in
- 4:27Speaker 4: Australia we are going to discuss kind of in depth.
- 4:30Speaker 4: I don't know how it's going to end up sounding
- 4:32Speaker 4: because I went on and on and on, and I
- 4:34Speaker 4: think Trav just turned me off halfway. But that's okay
- 4:37Speaker 4: because I will continue to talk about it on the pot.
- 4:40Speaker 2: That's what I do to women all the time.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Anyways, moving on, how that we get straight into.
- 4:47Speaker 3: To get into the show right now, it is she's
- 4:49Speaker 3: on the Money radio show Saturday morning right across the country.
- 4:52Speaker 3: It's She's on the Money Radio show with Australia's number
- 4:55Speaker 3: one finance podcast and now married Victoria Devine and Mitch
- 4:59Speaker 3: Churry as well.
- 5:00Speaker 5: How long can I milk that for? Do you think.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Perpetually until you get divorced.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, and then I can milk a divorce.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Now, Trev, Can I just say the one person I
- 5:08Speaker 1: would never want a divorce is Finance podcast a Victoria Devine,
- 5:12Speaker 1: where you'd get screwed. You wouldn't get the boat, she'd
- 5:14Speaker 1: take the spatula from the kitchen. Oh my god, we don't.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Even have a boat.
- 5:18Speaker 4: But you best believe if we were getting a divorce,
- 5:20Speaker 4: I'd end up with your get.
- 5:22Speaker 3: It and you know what, you would need to listen
- 5:24Speaker 3: to Super Savis Saturday. You'd have a lot of money
- 5:26Speaker 3: lemmas as well, which you're going to hear about here
- 5:29Speaker 3: in the show a little bit later on. But right
- 5:32Speaker 3: now we're talking about the buy now, pay later market.
- 5:35Speaker 5: I am so excited about this.
- 5:37Speaker 4: This reform made me download Twitter so I could tweet
- 5:41Speaker 4: about it because I was like, Lucy, is it guys?
- 5:43Speaker 1: So what do you reform?
- 5:45Speaker 4: Well, here in Australia we have buy now, pay later,
- 5:47Speaker 4: so that's things like after pay and zip pay, and
- 5:51Speaker 4: right now they don't actually have to stick to the
- 5:54Speaker 4: rules that credit cards adhere to. So at the moment
- 5:57Speaker 4: there's existing rules for credit cards and they keep people safe.
- 6:01Speaker 5: So if you went Mitch to go and.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Sign up for a credit card today, they would be like, oh,
- 6:06Speaker 4: let me just quickly check your credit score and whether
- 6:08Speaker 4: you can afford this. They don't do those types of
- 6:11Speaker 4: checks before you join a buy now, pay later company,
- 6:13Speaker 4: which I think is quite toxic. So there has been
- 6:16Speaker 4: a move and a paper release that is aiming to
- 6:19Speaker 4: put in place some regulation for their sixteen million dollar
- 6:23Speaker 4: by now.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Pay Later sector here in Australia. I love it.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Not to get too political about it, but the Albanzi
- 6:29Speaker 4: government has been doing good things in this space. And
- 6:32Speaker 4: the paper was released last Monday, and to summarize it
- 6:35Speaker 4: really quick for you, basically has three different options for
- 6:37Speaker 4: reform and it concludes stuff like expanding the National Consumer
- 6:41Speaker 4: Credit Protection Act to include by now Pay Later, which
- 6:44Speaker 4: from my perspective as an ex financial advisor, is one
- 6:48Speaker 4: of the easiest ways to just make sure it's a
- 6:50Speaker 4: completely level playing field, because at the end of the day,
- 6:53Speaker 4: buy now, Pay later is a form of credit, like
- 6:56Speaker 4: you are borrowing money that you do not have to
- 6:59Speaker 4: pay for fee that you currently can't afford.
- 7:02Speaker 5: And that's okay, but I think what we need to
- 7:04Speaker 5: do is.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Always make sure that the consumer is in the right position,
- 7:07Speaker 4: because in Australia we have a massive lack of financial literacy,
- 7:11Speaker 4: like not everybody knows what they're signing up for when
- 7:14Speaker 4: they sign up to pay, and the amount of stories
- 7:17Speaker 4: that come out of my community where they say things like, oh,
- 7:19Speaker 4: I signed up for zip pay and now I've looked
- 7:21Speaker 4: at my report and over the last three years, I've
- 7:24Speaker 4: spent sixty thousand dollars and I just didn't realize. And
- 7:27Speaker 4: to be honest, it was just because it was easy.
- 7:29Speaker 4: You just go People deserve more education, people.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Deserve right and that the company should be transparent with this.
- 7:37Speaker 1: They've been sneaking thus.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Fast, exactly, and you just assume that because it's by
- 7:40Speaker 4: now pay later, like that sounds a lot better than
- 7:43Speaker 4: oh I put.
- 7:44Speaker 5: It on my credit card.
- 7:45Speaker 4: There are a number of benefits to pint high now,
- 7:50Speaker 4: pie later, but one of them is that you don't
- 7:53Speaker 4: have the high interest rate associated with a credit card,
- 7:56Speaker 4: and so people see that as a little bit sexy.
- 7:59Speaker 4: They see it as kind of a benefit, right, like, oh, well,
- 8:02Speaker 4: if it's interest free, if I just paid off in time,
- 8:04Speaker 4: it doesn't matter, right, But it does enable you to
- 8:07Speaker 4: make more impulse purchases. Research tells us that on average,
- 8:11Speaker 4: if you're tapping plastic instead of just paying in cash,
- 8:14Speaker 4: you are going to spend nearly half more than what
- 8:17Speaker 4: you were going to if I had asked you to
- 8:19Speaker 4: pay for that thing in cash.
- 8:20Speaker 1: So it's buy now, pay way more later. That's really
- 8:23Speaker 1: what it should be.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Cooled mostly, Mostly, I just think that people need to
- 8:26Speaker 4: be more educated about the spending decisions that they're making.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Well, you know, if you have spent too much money
- 8:31Speaker 3: with buy now, pay later, we're going to save you
- 8:33Speaker 3: some money next.
- 8:33Speaker 2: God, well, I love it when you just slip in
- 8:36Speaker 2: there like that.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Man.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Thanks, it's a budget Direct winner, a can Stars Insure
- 8:42Speaker 2: of the Year or twenty twenty two Budget Direct Insurance Solved.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Look, we're here to save you some money, and we
- 8:49Speaker 1: love nothing more than a cheap knockoff that's actually better
- 8:51Speaker 1: than the original.
- 8:52Speaker 5: EXI version some trackscent we do.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 1: At the podcast towards the other night, I hugged V
- 8:57Speaker 1: and then I saw the tag on the back of
- 8:58Speaker 1: a jacket and it was Peey Mavan So she's actually
- 9:01Speaker 1: wearing a Uvton jupe, which.
- 9:03Speaker 5: I thought was how did you chock that out.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I got so close.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Eyesight's so bad. I didn't even know you.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Could re wow.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Really, that's because I go to Mechsavers instead of Specsavers,
- 9:12Speaker 1: so my glasses don't work. We're doing some dupes here,
- 9:15Speaker 1: so if you don't know what a dupe is, essentially
- 9:16Speaker 1: they're kind of big. On TikTok, you can get droops
- 9:18Speaker 1: for a lot of fancy designer products. You can get
- 9:20Speaker 1: drops for after shave, like I wear Les Labo Santaw
- 9:23Speaker 1: thirty three, which is.
- 9:25Speaker 4: You and I have a very similar taste my friend,
- 9:28Speaker 4: but she's exy yes.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So she is essentially I'd say, you know, anywhere between
- 9:32Speaker 1: three fifty to five fifty even for a bottle of that.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Here's the thing. You could also go to price line
- 9:37Speaker 1: and get a rexsona tropical spray that I've heard on
- 9:41Speaker 1: TikTok for nine dollars. It's a chip joop, yep.
- 9:44Speaker 5: What my perfume? What is my perfume?
- 9:47Speaker 3: She's just asking her, she's just asking her executive assist
- 9:51Speaker 3: what she was.
- 9:52Speaker 4: So I love the Baccarat Rouge perfume, and it is
- 9:56Speaker 4: three hundred and fifty six dollars a bottle which is insane.
- 10:00Speaker 4: But Ariana Grande from Chemist Warehouse nineteen ninety five money
- 10:03Speaker 4: Win smells exactly the same.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Oh you go for the Ariana Grande ponytail A ponytail.
- 10:09Speaker 5: I'm wearing her perfume.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Next stop, I will be carrying around a tiny dog
- 10:13Speaker 4: and starting to sing about my ex boyfriends at the
- 10:15Speaker 4: top of my voice.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I found this so original. Is the Potago Vanetta Lido slides,
- 10:20Speaker 1: which are really popular. They're green, They've got the cross
- 10:22Speaker 1: hatch pattern on them, and these slides are one thousand
- 10:25Speaker 1: and fifty dollars, which.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Is en Oh no, thank you.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Now, don't go to Potaga Vanetta. Go to Target because yeah,
- 10:34Speaker 1: they got the Maris which look exactly the same for
- 10:37Speaker 1: thirty bakarnies.
- 10:39Speaker 4: How spicy would it get if you went out for
- 10:41Speaker 4: brunch in Bondy and you're like wearing a really expensive Yeah,
- 10:44Speaker 4: it's got your really expensive handbag, and then some chick
- 10:47Speaker 4: rocks up wearing the Target version and gets a compliment
- 10:50Speaker 4: in front of you.
- 10:51Speaker 5: I'd be so salty.
- 10:52Speaker 1: All right, give me one more Jube.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I've got two jeeps, as I said I promised Dowdy.
- 10:56Speaker 4: The first is not a jew but It's just a
- 10:58Speaker 4: really solid recommendation. It is the Lea Mule rose eleven
- 11:02Speaker 4: dollars ninety nine a bottle and probably the best rose
- 11:05Speaker 4: I've drunk in my life.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Hang on it, La Mule, La Mule has it got
- 11:08Speaker 2: a big kick to it.
- 11:09Speaker 1: It doesn't have a.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Kick, but it's got a picture of a donkey on
- 11:12Speaker 4: the front, so it makes up for it. But then
- 11:15Speaker 4: the second dupe I want to pick up on again
- 11:18Speaker 4: from our friends at Audi again not sponsored, just really good.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Is there laucra Vida base primer, which is about ten
- 11:26Speaker 4: dollars and it is an exact dupe for like the
- 11:29Speaker 4: one hundred dollars Bobby Brown primer.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Woh, I love that identical.
- 11:34Speaker 1: A lot of makeup dupes in the beauty world, isn't
- 11:37Speaker 1: that crazy? If you've got a jupe, hit us up?
- 11:39Speaker 5: I need them in my life.
- 11:41Speaker 1: You know what I'd love if someone was maybe dating
- 11:43Speaker 1: a dupe, Like if someone was like, oh, I've got
- 11:44Speaker 1: like the Chris Hemsworth jupe. He's kind of like Chris,
- 11:48Speaker 1: but he was born in you know, Liverpool.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Don't they called doppel Ganghis or they call wish versions,
- 11:54Speaker 2: aren't they?
- 11:54Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Hey, if you've got a money dilemma, you
- 11:57Speaker 3: won't be if you're spend any money on dupes.
- 11:59Speaker 2: But you can eat us up anytime on socials. Just search.
- 12:02Speaker 2: She's on the money.
- 12:04Speaker 1: This is she's on the Money radio show each week.
- 12:09Speaker 1: What we do here is we bring someone's financial story
- 12:11Speaker 1: on air. So Sarina us hi vee. I've got myself
- 12:14Speaker 1: into a pickle. We buy now, pay later, very topical.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I've got one account with a four thousand dollars limit
- 12:19Speaker 1: that is now maxed out. Another account that has a
- 12:22Speaker 1: seven grand limit that's also maxed out, both of which, yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 1: both of which she's hidden from her partner. So she
- 12:29Speaker 1: earns eighty five k per year and her monthly repayments
- 12:32Speaker 1: are around two seven fifty.
- 12:34Speaker 4: That's so much funny, But that's no judgment. It just
- 12:37Speaker 4: would feel really terrible having that on you and.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Hiding it from your partner. So here's an issue. Questions
- 12:42Speaker 1: come up every payday from the partner asking why she
- 12:45Speaker 1: never has any money. Christmas is looming, She's got no
- 12:47Speaker 1: idea how she can leave by presence. She's so stressed.
- 12:50Speaker 1: What should she do? So she needs to know can
- 12:51Speaker 1: she negotiate payment plans or should she close accounts without
- 12:55Speaker 1: paying them? Will it affect a credit rating. There's a
- 12:57Speaker 1: lot to unpack.
- 12:58Speaker 4: Sorry, first things first, we need to tell your partner
- 13:00Speaker 4: because emotionally, that's clearly weighing on you. And if you're
- 13:03Speaker 4: in a solid relationship, you should be able to have
- 13:05Speaker 4: conversations like that without judgment. And to me, it's a
- 13:08Speaker 4: bit of a red flag if you're hiding things from
- 13:10Speaker 4: your partner if worry of being judged or them not
- 13:14Speaker 4: being very kind about it, that to me would be
- 13:17Speaker 4: not a good place to be. Yes, you absolutely should
- 13:20Speaker 4: close the accounts, but often you can't close by now
- 13:22Speaker 4: pay later accounts until.
- 13:23Speaker 5: They're at zero, so they do have to remain open.
- 13:27Speaker 4: In saying that, what you can do is each time
- 13:29Speaker 4: you pay off a bit of your debt and you
- 13:32Speaker 4: get your after pay down to maybe like three thousand,
- 13:34Speaker 4: five hundred instead of the four thousand, you can actually
- 13:37Speaker 4: call up after pay and have your limit brought down,
- 13:40Speaker 4: so as you're paying it off, you kind of decrease
- 13:43Speaker 4: your limits so you can't stretch back up again. Because
- 13:46Speaker 4: that seems to be something that a lot of people
- 13:48Speaker 4: fall into the trap of, and that's going Oh, I
- 13:50Speaker 4: really want that there's five hundred dollars like extra wriggle
- 13:53Speaker 4: room on my after pay, I'll just pay for it
- 13:55Speaker 4: and I'll deal with the debt later. That is a
- 13:57Speaker 4: toxic place to be in. The Other thing I would
- 13:59Speaker 4: say is really sit down and do your budget and
- 14:02Speaker 4: cash flow. Get on top of it. It will actually
- 14:04Speaker 4: make you feel super empowered. Budgets should not be restrictive.
- 14:08Speaker 4: They should be something that make you feel like you're
- 14:10Speaker 4: in the best possible position to allocate your dollars to
- 14:14Speaker 4: the things that you really care about and the things
- 14:17Speaker 4: that you want to create out of your life.
- 14:19Speaker 1: So should someone craft their own budget? Is that what
- 14:21Speaker 1: you're saying? Like someone else?
- 14:23Speaker 4: If you go to my website, I'm not trying to
- 14:24Speaker 4: sell a product here, but go to my website. There's
- 14:26Speaker 4: a free downloadable one on there because I have made
- 14:28Speaker 4: it and just made it work for people. Sit down
- 14:32Speaker 4: and do a budget. Understand how many dollars come in,
- 14:35Speaker 4: and most people are able to tell us that, but
- 14:37Speaker 4: most people can't tell me how many dollars go out
- 14:40Speaker 4: of their account. So that's the next number we really
