- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money podcast for
- 1:00Speaker 2: millennials who want financial freedom. Welcome back to another one
- 1:04Speaker 2: of our money darries where we get to talk with
- 1:06Speaker 2: one of our incredible She's on the Money community members
- 1:09Speaker 2: all about their journey. Let's jump straight into it, because
- 1:12Speaker 2: this week we got a message and it sounded exactly
- 1:15Speaker 2: like this. Hi, She's on the Money. I'm a money failure,
- 1:19Speaker 2: but I'm working on it. I grew up in a
- 1:21Speaker 2: wealthy family, but subsequently I learned no money skills. But
- 1:25Speaker 2: now I'm getting out of debt, slowly working on a budget,
- 1:29Speaker 2: and moving from working less than seven hours a week
- 1:32Speaker 2: to thirty hours. I've got a baby on the way,
- 1:35Speaker 2: so now it's more important than ever for me to
- 1:37Speaker 2: change my ways. I'm so excited about this money drest. One,
- 1:42Speaker 2: welcome to the show, Thank you. And two, I'm obsessed
- 1:46Speaker 2: with the idea that you're giving us a money story.
- 1:49Speaker 2: But like, you're not there yet. We're on the journey,
- 1:51Speaker 2: like we're changing our mindset, but we're in the middle
- 1:53Speaker 2: of the mindset shift. Like I'm just so excited to
- 1:56Speaker 2: have a chat with you.
- 1:57Speaker 4: I'm so excited. I love every money story in binge them,
- 2:00Speaker 4: so I do love hearing all the inspo.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Is it weird hearing me do the intro? If you
- 2:05Speaker 2: binge our money diaries and it's like for you and live,
- 2:10Speaker 2: I was like.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Oh, this is me that we're talking about. This is
- 2:12Speaker 4: very weird.
- 2:14Speaker 2: How good? All right, Well, let's do a money diary.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I always ask the same first question at the start
- 2:20Speaker 2: money Diarist, what would you grade your money habits if
- 2:22Speaker 2: I forced you to give them a grade from A
- 2:24Speaker 2: through to F.
- 2:25Speaker 4: I used to think it was an F. I'd like
- 2:27Speaker 4: to be a bit kinder to myself and say I
- 2:29Speaker 4: was an e because we're working on it.
- 2:32Speaker 2: But yes, all right, well let's get a little bit
- 2:35Speaker 2: further into it. We got a very brief summary of
- 2:38Speaker 2: where you've come from, but let's dive deeper. Money diarist,
- 2:42Speaker 2: can you tell me a little bit more about your
- 2:44Speaker 2: money story.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Yeah, so I grew up with wealthy parents. They both
- 2:49Speaker 4: grew up with no money. My mum lived in a
- 2:53Speaker 4: small town with everybody in the one room in Italy,
- 2:55Speaker 4: and dad was pretty much the same but over in Melbourne.
- 2:58Speaker 4: So they built what I would say is an empire.
- 3:03Speaker 4: They provided everything for us. We all went to private school,
- 3:06Speaker 4: so I'm one of six kids.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, you know someone's wealthy when in twenty
- 3:10Speaker 2: twenty four people say I'm one of six.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Like, okay, They yeah, provided everything for us. We went
- 3:16Speaker 4: on you know, an international holiday every year.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Oh my god. We six kids, not even talking about money,
- 3:23Speaker 2: like the logistics.
- 3:25Speaker 4: So the youngest three always went, and then others added
- 3:29Speaker 4: on depending on where they were with work. So there's
- 3:31Speaker 4: a lot of us to try and coordinate things with.
- 3:34Speaker 4: But yeah, so everything was easily given to us, not
- 3:38Speaker 4: in the sense that like anything we asked for was
- 3:41Speaker 4: given to us. But we were very rarely told no.
- 3:43Speaker 4: If we needed.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Something, yeah, you didn't go without.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Yeah it was very good. But we actually never spoke
- 3:48Speaker 4: about money at all. I've grown up with the same
- 3:50Speaker 4: sort of sense that you know, I can go on
- 3:53Speaker 4: travel every year, and I can do this and do that.
- 3:56Speaker 4: And I have been working since I was sixteen. I
- 3:59Speaker 4: really enjoy working. Some people would say I'm obsessed with working,
- 4:02Speaker 4: and we'll work a whole week, because since I was
- 4:05Speaker 4: about eighteen, I had studied full time and worked full time,
- 4:07Speaker 4: if not seven days a week. So I do really
- 4:11Speaker 4: like work as well. But as soon as I get money,
- 4:14Speaker 4: I spend it. And I have a little bit of
- 4:17Speaker 4: impulse control that I'm working on. But I would save
- 4:20Speaker 4: money and then I would go on a holiday and
- 4:21Speaker 4: I'd spend every single bit that I had and then
- 4:24Speaker 4: repeat the cycle again. So last year my appendix best
- 4:29Speaker 4: and I know the job that I was in at
- 4:33Speaker 4: that time, they'd lost a lot of clients, so I
- 4:35Speaker 4: cann't actually work many hours at all if I was
- 4:38Speaker 4: in a beauty role, and they'd only probably get about
- 4:41Speaker 4: seven hours of work a week and had to then
- 4:45Speaker 4: kind of adjust the fact that I wasn't earning money
- 4:47Speaker 4: and that I had my appending. So the one time
- 4:49Speaker 4: that I was going to be able to earn a
- 4:51Speaker 4: bit more money if my joke was picking up my
- 4:53Speaker 4: appendix disulted first, and what I was studying last year,
- 4:57Speaker 4: it requires me to fly into state to do.
- 4:59Speaker 2: My Oh how annoying. And you're injured so you weren't
- 5:03Speaker 2: able to do a lot of that.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Yeah, so it made it a bit harder. And it's
- 5:08Speaker 4: definitely the most expensive degree I've ever done, having to
- 5:11Speaker 4: fly into State every semester. That's crazy, Yeah, but it's
- 5:16Speaker 4: something that I love doing.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Tell me about this degree, though, like what degree has
- 5:19Speaker 2: you traveling into state? And can I guess first? Is
- 5:22Speaker 2: it like something to do with marine biology or something
- 5:25Speaker 2: that you need to travel to Tasmania for.
- 5:29Speaker 4: No, that's pretty cool though. I would love to do
- 5:30Speaker 4: that because I also love studying as much as I
- 5:32Speaker 4: love working. I love studying as well. But I study
- 5:35Speaker 4: clinical aesthetics and it's actually not something anyway. So there's
- 5:39Speaker 4: only two universities in the country that offer it, and
- 5:41Speaker 4: they're both based either in Sydney or in Melbourne. So
- 5:44Speaker 4: they held their practice into.
- 5:46Speaker 2: State, what do you do as a job. When you
- 5:48Speaker 2: study clinical aesthetics.
- 5:50Speaker 4: You are kind of less than an aesthetic nurse, but
- 5:53Speaker 4: more than a general therapist. So you can do treatments,
- 5:57Speaker 4: you can do research, you can do so much with it,
- 5:59Speaker 4: so depends on where you want to land. I like
- 6:02Speaker 4: being face to face with people, so I'm doing treatments,
- 6:05Speaker 4: but it is one of those things that who knows
- 6:07Speaker 4: where it takes me.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Now that I'm pregnant, that's literally so exciting. I'm so
- 6:14Speaker 2: interested in that space. So it's like not a beauty therapist,
- 6:18Speaker 2: but it's also like not at the other end where
- 6:20Speaker 2: you're able to do like injections and like filler and
- 6:24Speaker 2: botox and stuff, but you're allowed to do the middle
- 6:26Speaker 2: stuff that a beauty therapist wouldn't be licensed to do exactly.
- 6:30Speaker 4: And where I want to specialize, which I've still got
- 6:32Speaker 4: about a year ago, is wound healing. So working with
- 6:35Speaker 4: plastic surgeons and working with people who have got big wounds.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Oh how fun. And you mentioned in your story and
- 6:42Speaker 2: also right now that you're going to have a baby. Yes,
- 6:46Speaker 2: tell me about that.
- 6:48Speaker 4: My partner and I've been together about a year and
- 6:50Speaker 4: a half and we'd started talking about potentially having a
- 6:53Speaker 4: baby at the beginning of next year, and then she
- 6:55Speaker 4: surprised us.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Oh, we love this. She's like, guys, it's my time
- 7:00Speaker 2: to shine.
- 7:02Speaker 4: So I am due at the end of this year.
- 7:04Speaker 4: I'm due in December. But yes, it was a lovely surprise.
- 7:07Speaker 4: We are not taking any part of this for granted,
- 7:09Speaker 4: so we thought we would be in a better position.
- 7:12Speaker 4: But that's fine. We will take what we can get
- 7:14Speaker 4: when it comes to babies.
- 7:15Speaker 2: How beautiful. That's so exciting. I know this isn't money
- 7:20Speaker 2: to the US questions, but how did you find out
- 7:22Speaker 2: you were pregnant if it was a surprise, Because I
- 7:24Speaker 2: think everybody knows that I was trying to get pregnant,
- 7:28Speaker 2: so I was like testing before. I wasn't even meant
- 7:30Speaker 2: to be testing. Everyone's like, you need to wait longer
- 7:32Speaker 2: than a week there, and I'd be like, I'm a
- 7:34Speaker 2: just test in case, Like logically we know that the
- 7:37Speaker 2: line isn't going to come up, But like, how did
- 7:39Speaker 2: you find out you were pregnant if it wasn't something
- 7:41Speaker 2: that you'd planned.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Yes, So I was probably four or five days away
- 7:46Speaker 4: from getting my period, and I had a dream that
- 7:48Speaker 4: I was pregnant.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I'm so glad, I asked, So I thought.
- 7:53Speaker 4: I'll just pianistic. What's the worst it's going to happen.
- 7:55Speaker 4: It's just going to give me peace of mind in case,
- 7:57Speaker 4: you know, I'm a little bit wrong, and that is
- 7:59Speaker 4: what it is. But I was right. My dreams told
- 8:02Speaker 4: me that I was pregnant, so so sweet.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Did you know you were pregnant with a girl?
- 8:07Speaker 4: Up until week eight, I actually thought I was having
- 8:09Speaker 4: a boy. So the entire time I thought I was
- 8:11Speaker 4: having a boy. And then we did our little nicked
- 8:13Speaker 4: test and no, she's a girl.
- 8:16Speaker 2: It's wild. When I had Harvey, we didn't find out
- 8:20Speaker 2: the gender until birth and we were in the theater
- 8:24Speaker 2: and the obstetrician held Harvey up and said, what if
- 8:28Speaker 2: you guys had and my husband was like, it's a boy.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And I was just shocked because I thought he was joking,
- 8:35Speaker 2: because I thought I had the best mother's intuition in
- 8:38Speaker 2: the entire world, like I had convinced myself I was
- 8:41Speaker 2: having a girl. I didn't care about the gender, but
- 8:44Speaker 2: I just thought I was, like, you know, full of intuition.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Turns out I was incredibly wrong. He was most definitely
- 8:51Speaker 2: a boy. And yeah, so that's just a humbling experience
- 8:55Speaker 2: for me. But ah, how exciting a little lady.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm very, very excited. My sister gave birth to
- 9:00Speaker 4: a boy earlier this year, and my sister in law
- 9:03Speaker 4: is about four weeks before me, so she's also having
- 9:05Speaker 4: a boy. So we're gonna have three grand babies in
- 9:09Speaker 4: a year, which is exciting.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Tell your parents they're welcome.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Yeah, well, they can't stop crying. If anyone else gets pregnant,
- 9:17Speaker 4: I think they might just pass out.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Let's give them a little bit of a break. Money arrest.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I want to know, now, what are you currently doing
- 9:23Speaker 2: for work and how much money do you earn?
- 9:25Speaker 4: So I work in retail. I have two jobs, so
- 9:27Speaker 4: I'm working six days a week at the moment, and
- 9:31Speaker 4: I work in a casual role for both of them.
- 9:36Speaker 4: And one is the big beauty retailer we all knowing
- 9:39Speaker 4: love bougie, and one is like, I sell jewelry, engagement
- 9:45Speaker 4: ringings and things like that.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah cool, I feel like that's a nice mix.
- 9:50Speaker 4: With Mecca, I can absolutely spend all with my pay
- 9:52Speaker 4: in the blink of an eye, But with the other one,
- 9:54Speaker 4: I'm not buying myself an engagement ring.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So also I feel like if I work at Mecca,
- 10:01Speaker 2: I would be on a slippery slope, like you, of
- 10:03Speaker 2: all people are going to know guys, I'm a level four,
- 10:07Speaker 2: So like that tells you that if I worked at Mecca,
- 10:10Speaker 2: I'd have literally no money because I'd walk into work,
- 10:13Speaker 2: spend all my money, and then leave.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it happens. Everybody goes through it. You get through
- 10:18Speaker 4: to a point like I've been there for over five years,
- 10:21Speaker 4: so it's been a bit of time, but you still
- 10:24Speaker 4: spend your money every time. I don't think anyone walks
- 10:26Speaker 4: into my friend doesn't buy something.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. And was it always like a dream
- 10:30Speaker 2: to work at Mecca, because I feel like if you're
- 10:31Speaker 2: in this industry, like you're someone who's studying clinical aesthetics
- 10:35Speaker 2: and like putting your all into it, Like I can't
- 10:37Speaker 2: think of a better job to work out while you're studying.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Yeah, it is fantastic because a lot of my degree
- 10:43Speaker 4: is like skin conditions and skin health, so I get
- 10:45Speaker 4: a lot of practice I guess without actually being able
- 10:48Speaker 4: to diagnose.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And they would absolutely love you because then you're giving
- 10:52Speaker 2: good product recommendations. How good.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it's very pervy. I love doing it.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Now, don't tell me what you earn per hour, But
- 11:00Speaker 2: between the two of your jobs, how much money are
- 11:02Speaker 2: you bringing home?
- 11:03Speaker 4: It's roughly two two hundred to fortnite. The last financial year,
- 11:08Speaker 4: because I didn't get to work for about six months,
- 11:10Speaker 4: it was actually about just over forty two thousand. It's
- 11:13Speaker 4: a bit hit and miss because, like I said, both
- 11:15Speaker 4: of them are casuals. Who really does depend.
- 11:16Speaker 2: On hours and time of the year and all of that. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 2: but like those are good jobs to have while you're studying.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Next question, I want to note, you've got a baby
- 11:25Speaker 2: on the way, you're slowly getting out of debt, you're
- 11:27Speaker 2: working on a budget, but what are your big money
- 11:29Speaker 2: goals at the moment?
- 11:31Speaker 4: First big money goal would be having an emergency fund.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Not working much last year, I don't have any savings left.
- 11:38Speaker 4: And then I would also be saving for some extra
- 11:41Speaker 4: time off Matt leave because I'll be using my centerling pay.
- 11:44Speaker 4: But if I want to have a little bit more
- 11:46Speaker 4: time with the baby, I don't want my partner to
- 11:48Speaker 4: be I mean, he's happy to be financially responsible for
- 11:51Speaker 4: all of us, but I would like to still contribute
- 11:53Speaker 4: in some way, so I'd like to have a little
- 11:55Speaker 4: bit of savings behind me as well.
- 11:57Speaker 2: I love that. I feel like having an emergency fund
- 11:59Speaker 2: at the moment is a really good goal. Have you
- 12:02Speaker 2: sat down and thought about what an emergency fund for
- 12:05Speaker 2: a young couple expecting their first baby is going to
- 12:08Speaker 2: look like? Like, what's the goal?
- 12:10Speaker 4: I haven't thought that much about it, if I'm being
- 12:13Speaker 4: completely honest.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Girl, we need to sit down.
- 12:16Speaker 4: I know. It's one of those things that like, I'm
- 12:18Speaker 4: really getting into it in the last month, and we've
- 12:22Speaker 4: never been people to like combine our finances. We didn't
- 12:25Speaker 4: even really talk about money until I started stressing about
- 12:28Speaker 4: like what next you will look like.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, it is so stressful too, And like
- 12:32Speaker 2: when you start googling how much baby stuff is, it's wild.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Just to put your heart at ease and your mind
- 12:39Speaker 2: is right now. They use next to none of it.
- 12:42Speaker 2: You need ones is. The best ones are at Target,
- 12:45Speaker 2: the Target brand ones too. Nine to ninety five money
- 12:48Speaker 2: in burp cloths and a boob You are fine. If
- 12:51Speaker 2: they don't want to take the boob formula, really simple formula.
- 12:55Speaker 4: That's the plan. I'm hoping all of that we're just
- 12:58Speaker 4: going to buy as we need. So we've obviously got
- 13:00Speaker 4: the things we know we need, Carsiat, Pram, all of that,
- 13:04Speaker 4: but everything else if she needs it, we're five minutes
- 13:06Speaker 4: away from baby bunting.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Yes see, that's the mindset that I wish I had.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I kept worrying that I didn't have something, and I'd
- 13:13Speaker 2: be like, oh my gosh, like what if I don't
- 13:15Speaker 2: have it, Oh, maybe I'll just buy it in case
- 13:17Speaker 2: forgetting completely that. I literally live ten minutes from the
- 13:22Speaker 2: memo and like everybody knows, the memo has absolutely everything.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I should have used my brain a bit more, but
- 13:27Speaker 2: at the same time, like it's really exciting. I don't know,
- 13:30Speaker 2: you see something cute and you're like, I need this.
- 13:33Speaker 2: I think the thing that saved me money Diarist was
- 13:35Speaker 2: that I didn't know what gender I was having, and
- 13:38Speaker 2: that actually saved me a lot of money because I
- 13:40Speaker 2: couldn't be impulsive on oh it's a little cute pink
- 13:42Speaker 2: onesie or it's a blue onesie. Like I didn't buy
- 13:45Speaker 2: a lot of gender and stuff. I kind of made
- 13:46Speaker 2: sure I had the basics for like the hospital and
- 13:49Speaker 2: like the few weeks after then, I went ham online
- 13:52Speaker 2: shopping while I was recovering in hospital. I was high
- 13:55Speaker 2: on end don because at the end of the day
- 13:57Speaker 2: I had had a cesarean and my baby is quiet
- 14:01Speaker 2: at some point, and I was like, cool, if we
- 14:03Speaker 2: are up at three am feeding, I'm also shopping.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I understand completely. Me and my partner have been very
- 14:11Speaker 4: slow with buying her gifts just yet. But every now
- 14:14Speaker 4: and then there's a very key thing and I'm like, oh,
- 14:16Speaker 4: I can't whistle.
- 14:18Speaker 2: We need to have it. No, I adore it. All right,
- 14:21Speaker 2: let's stop the baby chat. I have a lot of questions.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Let's go to a quick break and on the flip side,
- 14:26Speaker 2: I want to know more about this debt. I want
- 14:28Speaker 2: to know more about how you're working on a budget.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I want to know your best and worse money habits.
- 14:33Speaker 2: So guys, don't go anywhere money diarist do. We are back,
- 14:40Speaker 2: and I am loving having this chat with you. I
- 14:42Speaker 2: feel like we've very quickly become besties. You've said that
- 14:45Speaker 2: you're a money failure and you're working on it. You're
- 14:47Speaker 2: currently studying clinical aesthetics. Last year you made forty two
- 14:51Speaker 2: thousand dollars and in December you're having a baby. I
- 14:54Speaker 2: just think there's a lot to unpack here, but I
- 14:56Speaker 2: want to know first money, Darist, do you invest if
- 15:01Speaker 2: so in what if not? Have you ever thought about it?
- 15:05Speaker 4: Yeah? I have my super because I've been working for
- 15:07Speaker 4: so long. I think my sweeper is currently sitting at
- 15:09Speaker 4: about forty thousand dollars. Okay, it's a nice little nest
- 15:14Speaker 4: egg that's building for me, which is lovely. And then
- 15:17Speaker 4: I do also own some shares. I did it all
- 15:20Speaker 4: myself when we were like right in the middle of
- 15:23Speaker 4: COVID and we were getting job keeper and I thought,
- 15:27Speaker 4: this is more than my casual wage. I'll just put
- 15:30Speaker 4: it all towards chares.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Oh, how good.
- 15:33Speaker 4: I think I invested five hundred dollars in different actual
- 15:36Speaker 4: companies because I was trying to find things that are
- 15:39Speaker 4: aligned with what I wanted to invest in. They've all
- 15:43Speaker 4: grown to be sort of a one hundred seventy five
- 15:48Speaker 4: percent of what I invest in, so they're returning well.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I thought, you're about to tell me it was like
- 15:53Speaker 2: one hundred and seventy five thousand dollars and I was
- 15:55Speaker 2: about to be like, Babe, this money, Darry is going
- 15:58Speaker 2: in a very different direction that I had anticipated. Unrelatable content.
- 16:02Speaker 2: But okay, tell me how much have you got in
- 16:05Speaker 2: shares now?
- 16:06Speaker 4: So I originally invested one thousand dollars, it's sitting close
- 16:10Speaker 4: to eight hundred dollars.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Oh, very nice over that period of time.
- 16:16Speaker 4: I think I bought them in twenty twenty one. I
- 16:20Speaker 4: also have Sharesyes, I've only been using it for probably
- 16:22Speaker 4: two months now, but I've essentially just put ten dollars
- 16:25Speaker 4: a week.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Oh, she's a convert. I love it.
- 16:28Speaker 4: I just want to make sure that there's something else
- 16:30Speaker 4: going towards something and if it doesn't work, it doesn't
- 16:32Speaker 4: work for me. But at least I'm trying to get
- 16:35Speaker 4: into the habit of putting away that ten dollars a week.
- 16:37Speaker 2: So tell me a little bit more. Because diving into
- 16:40Speaker 2: the share market for a lot of people can be
- 16:42Speaker 2: overwhelming and honestly uninspiring. I've been trying really hard for
- 16:46Speaker 2: my entire career to make investing sexy. But when you
- 16:50Speaker 2: start getting into the nitty gritty of it, and you
- 16:52Speaker 2: have to look at a fact sheet for an ETF,
- 16:54Speaker 2: or you look up a direct share ticker code on
- 16:57Speaker 2: the ASEX to read the website to make sure it's
- 16:59Speaker 2: a ligned to your values, like the sexiness starts to wear off.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Tell me a little bit about how you picked those
- 17:06Speaker 2: initial investments and what platform did you pick, Like, how
- 17:10Speaker 2: did you go they I'm an investor because you're young, Like,
- 17:15Speaker 2: this is something that so many of us just keep
- 17:18Speaker 2: putting off and putting off.
- 17:19Speaker 4: I used self wealth, So I got into investing. QUI
- 17:23Speaker 4: because my little sister has always been fantastic with money,
- 17:27Speaker 4: and we are competitive.
- 17:29Speaker 2: So oh, I love a competitive streak for getting ahead.
- 17:34Speaker 4: She's got into investing, so I got into investing. We
- 17:37Speaker 4: have different values in what we want to invest in.
- 17:39Speaker 4: So I just did a bit of research and I
- 17:42Speaker 4: found one's that I was happy to invest in. So
- 17:44Speaker 4: I invest in like education focused shares and things like that.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Oh how cool.
- 17:50Speaker 4: So yeah, I just found a couple of shares. I
- 17:52Speaker 4: read as much information as I could, and then I
- 17:54Speaker 4: got too scared and I thought, you know what, I'm
- 17:56Speaker 4: just going to trust my gut and pick a couple
- 17:59Speaker 4: and go from there.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Once you trusted your gut, were you like, oh, this
- 18:03Speaker 2: is definitely not as scary as I thought it would be,
- 18:05Speaker 2: because I feel like you get analysis paralysis just picking.
- 18:09Speaker 2: And then once you've picked, You're like, ah, that's it,
- 18:11Speaker 2: that's easy.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I just thought, you know what, what's the worst
- 18:14Speaker 4: is going to happen. It's not the end of the world.
- 18:17Speaker 4: I'll just pick. I'll see how it goes. And they
- 18:20Speaker 4: all lost money for a long time, and here we are,
- 18:22Speaker 4: we're back right up, better than we started.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I love this for us all right. Now, earlier you
- 18:28Speaker 2: mentioned that you have debt and you're slowly getting out
- 18:31Speaker 2: of it. Can you tell me a little bit more
- 18:33Speaker 2: about this date? What's it for? How much is it?
- 18:35Speaker 2: What's the plan?
- 18:36Speaker 4: Yeah? So when I was younger, I got a car loan,
- 18:39Speaker 4: which the only way I was going to get a
- 18:41Speaker 4: new car and a bigger car and a safer car
- 18:43Speaker 4: was me getting a car loan at that point. And
- 18:45Speaker 4: so I got my car loan, and probably from the
- 18:49Speaker 4: first payment onwards, I regretted it.
- 18:52Speaker 2: No how frustrating. It's the debt and the sting every
- 18:57Speaker 2: month that it's coming out that you're like, look, it
- 18:59Speaker 2: was really sexy when I signed up for this. I
- 19:01Speaker 2: don't really like having to give the money back every
- 19:03Speaker 2: single month. That's no fun.
- 19:06Speaker 4: That's exactly right. So rather than my minimum, I almost
- 19:09Speaker 4: tripled what I was supposed to pay and paid it
- 19:12Speaker 4: off a lot faster than I could while I was
- 19:14Speaker 4: earning money. And then I think I've still got maybe
- 19:17Speaker 4: five hundred dollars. It's not a lot left on it,
- 19:19Speaker 4: and about one payment away from finishing that, which is good.
- 19:23Speaker 2: That's so exciting. How much was the car loan in
- 19:27Speaker 2: its entirety?
- 19:29Speaker 4: I was approved for twenty one, but then I got
- 19:33Speaker 4: my mom to come and negotiate.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Thanksmart playing the car, and they.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Went all the way down to seventeen because I had
- 19:40Speaker 4: so much I wanted to put into it myself. And yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 4: I think the loan total was seventeen thousand and yeah,
- 19:45Speaker 4: and now I'm down to five hundred.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I love that. How much more debt have you got?
- 19:51Speaker 2: Have you got any other debts sitting around?
- 19:53Speaker 4: Yeah? So I do use after pay, which I know
- 19:55Speaker 4: is not necessarily the best, but I actually use almost
- 19:58Speaker 4: like a to control how much goes out every fortnite.
- 20:02Speaker 2: It's a cash flow tool, yes, and.
- 20:04Speaker 4: So I do have it. I have worked with them
- 20:09Speaker 4: to keep it as low as possible with the amount
- 20:12Speaker 4: I'm allowed to spend, and I just use it for
- 20:14Speaker 4: like those little things that come up and I'm like, oh,
- 20:16Speaker 4: I forgot about that and purchase that way.
- 20:19Speaker 2: So tell me about how you have negotiated with them
- 20:22Speaker 2: to have it be a lower amount, because that's not easy.
- 20:25Speaker 2: You can't just log online and drop it. Have you
- 20:27Speaker 2: like called up after pay and been like, give me less?
- 20:30Speaker 4: Yeah, pretty much. I sent them a message because I
- 20:33Speaker 4: had gotten to a point where I think it was
- 20:34Speaker 4: close to two thousand dollars or even a bit more
- 20:36Speaker 4: than that that they had approved me, and I was like,
- 20:40Speaker 4: I want to be honest, I'm the most reckless and
- 20:42Speaker 4: impulsal with money sometimes I don't want to be responsible
- 20:45Speaker 4: for that, and I don't want to owe you guys fees,
- 20:47Speaker 4: So I'd rather keep it under a thousand dollars or
- 20:50Speaker 4: as you know, whatever the lowest it could be at
- 20:52Speaker 4: that point in time. And I think it sits at
- 20:54Speaker 4: about like a thousand dollars, but I wouldn't let myself
- 20:56Speaker 4: get anything close to that because I get a bit anxious.
- 21:00Speaker 4: In case you know that Fortnite is the fortnighte that
- 21:02Speaker 4: I don't work as much or anything like that.
- 21:05Speaker 2: It's stress inducing. I love that you're controlling it and
- 21:08Speaker 2: using it as a cash flow tool. I obviously can
- 21:12Speaker 2: be quite cynical on after pay, and I mean I
- 21:15Speaker 2: am with all buy now, pay later platforms, right, it's
- 21:18Speaker 2: not because they're not good tools. Like after pay in
- 21:21Speaker 2: your situation, you're working casually, we can dofers and payments
- 21:24Speaker 2: for things that you ultimately needed. But it's the slippery
- 21:28Speaker 2: slope that they provide to people who don't see it
- 21:30Speaker 2: as a form of debt. They go, well, I've after
- 21:33Speaker 2: paid it, and it's like, well, yes, that's basically the
- 21:35Speaker 2: same as using your credit card, even though you're not
- 21:37Speaker 2: paying interest. Like, those are things that you might not
- 21:40Speaker 2: have spent money on, and it's putting you in a
- 21:42Speaker 2: negative situation. So I picked up on the tone of
- 21:45Speaker 2: what you were sayingually, oh it's not great, but like
- 21:47Speaker 2: then you explained a really great way that you had
- 21:49Speaker 2: used it, and you've brought down how much you're able
- 21:52Speaker 2: to even spend on that, and you're responsible with it,
- 21:55Speaker 2: Like I would say, you're far more in control than
- 21:58Speaker 2: you've made out to be.
- 21:59Speaker 4: My friend, I wasn't when I first had it. I
- 22:02Speaker 4: got it whenever it first launched.
- 22:04Speaker 2: You know, I had to learn the hard way.
- 22:06Speaker 4: I had to learn the hard way. I didn't want
- 22:08Speaker 4: to be responsible for that kind of debt. I like
- 22:10Speaker 4: having the option. I don't always use it, though, so that.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Is so fair. Are there any other debts that we
- 22:16Speaker 2: haven't discussed technically?
- 22:19Speaker 4: Yes, I do owe a little bit of money on
- 22:21Speaker 4: my tax return this year. I haven't lodged it because
- 22:23Speaker 4: I'm just going to put that off for a little bit.
- 22:25Speaker 4: It's not a lot. I've been able to claim enough
- 22:27Speaker 4: to bring that down to about I think it's three
- 22:29Speaker 4: hundred dollars that I'm going to owe the government. You
- 22:32Speaker 4: know that can wait a little second. I know it's there,
- 22:34Speaker 4: and I'm working towards it.
- 22:35Speaker 2: You've got time. I like that, and I like that
- 22:38Speaker 2: you know in advance, like most people don't know in
- 22:42Speaker 2: advance what they're going to all on tax? Who is this?
- 22:45Speaker 4: Both of my parents work in tax, so it's helpful
- 22:48Speaker 4: to be prepared and to have somebody in my corner
- 22:50Speaker 4: helping me out.
- 22:51Speaker 2: That feels like me right, Like if anybody remembers, I
- 22:55Speaker 2: basically repeat the same stories over and over. But I
- 23:00Speaker 2: grew up in a family we definitely were not wealthy.
- 23:03Speaker 2: But I grew up in a family where my dad
- 23:05Speaker 2: was an accountant and tried to teach me money over
- 23:07Speaker 2: and over and over again. And do you think I
- 23:09Speaker 2: would listen? Absolutely not. And I'm sure you're in the
- 23:13Speaker 2: same situation where they're trying to teach you know. I mean,
- 23:15Speaker 2: you probably didn't talk about money per se in relation
- 23:18Speaker 2: to their money or what you could spend, but they
- 23:20Speaker 2: would probably be trying to educate you. And it's not
- 23:22Speaker 2: until you're in a pickle that you're like, maybe I
- 23:24Speaker 2: should have listened to dad.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Yeah, it's often the case. It's actually very cute. They
- 23:29Speaker 4: actually met at the ATO.
- 23:31Speaker 2: So so cute an Ado dream.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Yeah. So they're very much yeah, finance focused and tax focused.
- 23:40Speaker 4: So it's good to have in my corner now that
- 23:42Speaker 4: I'm have my head screwed on a little bit and
- 23:44Speaker 4: I will actually listen and learnt.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I like that. Now, tell me about what you think
- 23:47Speaker 2: your best money habit is.
- 23:50Speaker 4: I'm always looking for a way to earn more. So
- 23:52Speaker 4: I like to mystery shop so that like if I
- 23:56Speaker 4: want to go out for grilled for instance, like my
- 23:58Speaker 4: mystery shop covers my pain and then I just you know,
- 24:02Speaker 4: I get paid to.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Eat what's a grilled order? Because I feel like this
- 24:05Speaker 2: is very telling of somebody's personality. What are you ordering
- 24:09Speaker 2: at the moment?
- 24:10Speaker 4: I am not eating a lot with baby, but I
- 24:13Speaker 4: really like the what's it called Wild wild West, the
- 24:15Speaker 4: pineapple one.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Or I always get pineapple on my burger, so good,
- 24:20Speaker 2: it is good. I'm obsessed with They have the impossible burgers,
- 24:24Speaker 2: so I get the impossible guard and goodness with grilled pineapple.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it's fantastic. I don't know why anyone wouldn't eat
- 24:29Speaker 4: pineapple on their pizza or on this burger, but.
- 24:33Speaker 2: I think it's funny that you mention it because you're like,
- 24:35Speaker 2: I mystery shoped to go to grilled. Last time I
- 24:37Speaker 2: went to Grilled, which, hilariously enough, was last night. My
- 24:41Speaker 2: burger was like more than twenty dollars, and I was like,
- 24:44Speaker 2: this is a lot, Like the cost of living is insane,
- 24:48Speaker 2: Like how did I just spend more than twenty dollars
- 24:51Speaker 2: on a single burger from arguably a takeaway location. This
- 24:54Speaker 2: is to me crazy. So it's like a special treat.
- 24:57Speaker 2: I'm glad that you are funding it smartly, and I'm not.
- 25:01Speaker 4: It's so easy to do, like in my spare time,
- 25:04Speaker 4: so I pick up whatever job I want, So that
- 25:07Speaker 4: works well, and I do always try to work as
- 25:09Speaker 4: much as I can, although again, being pregnant is becoming
- 25:13Speaker 4: more apparent that I can't work as much as i'd like.
- 25:16Speaker 2: How's that impacting you, like the pregnancy, Like are you
- 25:20Speaker 2: not well? Like what does that look like? Until December?
- 25:24Speaker 4: Yeah, so the first three months I spent every day vomiting,
- 25:28Speaker 4: and when I wasn't vomiting, I was nauseous, so wasn't
- 25:31Speaker 4: a fan. Then I got good for about a month
- 25:33Speaker 4: and now I'm back to being six. So, No, I
- 25:37Speaker 4: can't work all the time, and especially standing up in retail,
- 25:41Speaker 4: I can't. But my other retail job, I am by
- 25:43Speaker 4: appointment only, so I'm sitting down for everything, which makes
- 25:47Speaker 4: life a lot easier. Yeah, but I'm just trying to
- 25:50Speaker 4: work as much as I can when when I can. Yeah.
- 25:53Speaker 2: That was something that I planned every part of my
- 25:56Speaker 2: pregnancies and didn't foresee coming. Like thankfully I knew once
- 26:03Speaker 2: I got pregnant pretty quickly that I wasn't very good
- 26:06Speaker 2: at being pregnant. And I know that lots of people
- 26:08Speaker 2: say pregnancy is beautiful, like it's the most beautiful time
- 26:12Speaker 2: of your life. Like, yes, maybe it was for you,
- 26:14Speaker 2: but not for me, like pregnancy in general is not
- 26:18Speaker 2: for me, and that's okay. Will I do it again? Yeah,
- 26:20Speaker 2: I'll try, but I won't enjoy it. And I love
- 26:23Speaker 2: that other people enjoy it, and it doesn't make me
- 26:25Speaker 2: less grateful that I can get pregnant and had a
- 26:28Speaker 2: baby and all of that, but like, my gosh, it
- 26:31Speaker 2: is a ride, but it looks like a ride that's
- 26:33Speaker 2: now going to financially impact you. Are you planning around that?
- 26:37Speaker 2: Like what conversations are you having with your partner?
- 26:40Speaker 4: He is so kind and very concerned for my health,
- 26:44Speaker 4: which is lovely. So he's actually encouraging me to step
- 26:47Speaker 4: back from work a little bit. He's like, don't worry
- 26:49Speaker 4: if there's anything that comes up that's on me. Like
- 26:52Speaker 4: I'm the one that asking me to work less and
- 26:54Speaker 4: do all of that. So that's very lovely, But it's
- 26:59Speaker 4: also such a hard mindset for me to shift. It
- 27:01Speaker 4: didn't occur to me that I wouldn't be working next year,
- 27:03Speaker 4: Like it didn't make sense to me because I have
- 27:05Speaker 4: worked so much my entire life that oh wait, no,
- 27:09Speaker 4: I actually have to stop because I'm now someone's mum
- 27:11Speaker 4: and they need me. It was such a mindset shift
- 27:15Speaker 4: that I can't do everything all of the time.
- 27:19Speaker 2: No, and that is literally a full time job. Like
- 27:22Speaker 2: it's so insane how exhausted you become and how on
- 27:27Speaker 2: you are all the time. Don't get me wrong, it
- 27:29Speaker 2: is the best job in the entire world, but it
- 27:31Speaker 2: is a lot. Like you might not be going to
- 27:33Speaker 2: work anymore. But I'm sorry if you're tired now. Ha
- 27:36Speaker 2: huh yeh.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I'm fully prepared for the fact that this is just
- 27:40Speaker 4: prepping me for what it might be.
- 27:42Speaker 2: No, no, no, do you know what? And this is
- 27:44Speaker 2: complete side note. A lot of people they always say,
- 27:46Speaker 2: just wait until you have the baby. It's going to
- 27:48Speaker 2: get harder. No sit down, stop telling me just wait.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Pregnancy tired is like no other Like I feel better
- 27:57Speaker 2: postpardum at three am when I have a screaming baby
- 28:01Speaker 2: than I ever did pregnant, Like, if you go through
- 28:04Speaker 2: that nauseous period like I had, HG, it sounds like
- 28:07Speaker 2: you're pretty much on the same path. It sucks being pregnant.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Being not pregnant a blessing, Like you can deal with
- 28:14Speaker 2: anything when you're not nauseous.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I am grateful to be pregnant, but I am
- 28:19Speaker 4: so happy when she's out of me.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Yeah, agreed, all right, So any other really good money habits.
- 28:26Speaker 4: I'd say that's pretty much everything. I do have a
- 28:28Speaker 4: pretty good mindset in the sense that I don't have
- 28:30Speaker 4: a scarcity mindset. So I just always believe that if
- 28:33Speaker 4: something bad was to happen, I would just earn more money.
- 28:36Speaker 4: I would find a different job, I would do this,
- 28:38Speaker 4: And I think that's what makes me slightly less stressed
- 28:41Speaker 4: about certain situations, Like I think had last year happened
- 28:45Speaker 4: to me and I didn't have that mindset, I would
- 28:47Speaker 4: have been very down in the dumps for a while
- 28:49Speaker 4: and kind of spiraled into a debt spiral, whereas now
- 28:53Speaker 4: like I'm just like, no, I'll just build it back up.
- 28:55Speaker 4: I'll earn more money when I'm healthy again. And here
- 28:57Speaker 4: we are.
- 28:58Speaker 2: That is so good, all right? Tell me, though, what's
- 29:01Speaker 2: your worst money have it?
- 29:03Speaker 4: I'm extremely impulsive and I do really love to shop,
- 29:09Speaker 4: and like emotionally shop as well. So like when I'm
- 29:12Speaker 4: feeling not my best self, especially in my pregnancy, I'm like,
- 29:16Speaker 4: but I deserve like some clothes that feel good in pregnancy,
- 29:19Speaker 4: or I will deserve to buy the baby this, or
- 29:22Speaker 4: you know, I like to treat myself a little bit.
- 29:24Speaker 4: But I'm getting on top of that. And I think
- 29:26Speaker 4: the other thing is, like I don't really have much
- 29:28Speaker 4: of a budget. My income's always variable. I kind of
- 29:32Speaker 4: see what I get paid that fortnight and then kind
- 29:35Speaker 4: of work it out from there. It's never hard and fast,
- 29:38Speaker 4: so I often get surprised by my bills. But that's
- 29:42Speaker 4: something I'm working on. Me and my partner have started
- 29:44Speaker 4: to sit down. We've actually got a money date booked
- 29:47Speaker 4: in which he thinks is really dalky, but I think
- 29:51Speaker 4: it's really cool.
- 29:52Speaker 2: All right, sit down, sir. This is the sexiest thing
- 29:54Speaker 2: I've ever heard.
- 29:56Speaker 4: Yeah, And so we're gonna like have a proper look
- 29:59Speaker 4: at what we spend, where we spend. And like I
- 30:02Speaker 4: said to him, I was like, it's not about judging
- 30:03Speaker 4: where our money goes. It's just knowing where our money
- 30:06Speaker 4: goes and if that's something that we're happy with or
- 30:08Speaker 4: if we want to change it, like, we don't know
- 30:10Speaker 4: until we know.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And I feel like there's something incredibly powerful about setting
- 30:14Speaker 2: up a money date, whether you are single and you
- 30:16Speaker 2: are just setting time aside for yourself to do that,
- 30:20Speaker 2: or you're in a couple for a really long time
- 30:22Speaker 2: and you're finally deciding to do it. I feel like
- 30:24Speaker 2: setting a time and setting a date and carving out
- 30:28Speaker 2: that space to have that conversation means you both enter
- 30:32Speaker 2: the conversation with the right mindset. So many times, you know,
- 30:36Speaker 2: I might have come home and said to Steve, we
- 30:38Speaker 2: really need to be talking about our budget, and like,
- 30:41Speaker 2: I've just had an hour in the car to myself.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I've thought about all the things we need to do,
- 30:45Speaker 2: all the things we need to change, But he wasn't
- 30:47Speaker 2: ready for me to walk into the house and start
- 30:50Speaker 2: talking money. Like you sometimes need to be in the
- 30:52Speaker 2: right mind frame, and like setting a time, setting a
- 30:55Speaker 2: date and putting it aside means that you're both entering
- 30:57Speaker 2: the chat on the same page and we can actually
- 31:01Speaker 2: create a sustainable and good budget and we know who's
- 31:04Speaker 2: bringing what to the table. And I just think that
- 31:07Speaker 2: is so incredibly powerful. When you say you're working on
- 31:11Speaker 2: a budget, like have you done any pre work for this,
- 31:13Speaker 2: or is this something that you're like, look, the money
- 31:15Speaker 2: date hasn't come up yet, it's coming, but we're going
- 31:18Speaker 2: to do it, or like have you started tracking expenses
- 31:21Speaker 2: or writing down what's going on? Like where are we
- 31:24Speaker 2: at with that.
- 31:25Speaker 4: I've started looking back on all my past bills, so
- 31:28Speaker 4: like looking at all my car insurance was this year
- 31:30Speaker 4: at the beginning, so that next year I have a
- 31:33Speaker 4: rough idea of what's coming up or whatever it is.
- 31:35Speaker 4: I'm still in the habit of liking the surprise of
- 31:38Speaker 4: where my money goes, but I'm trying to be better.
- 31:41Speaker 4: And so, yeah, it's mainly like the big bills. And
- 31:44Speaker 4: he owns his home, so he pays mortgage, but I
- 31:47Speaker 4: pray rent.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Good choice for baby daddy. I like this because so.
- 31:52Speaker 4: It's just about like tracking what's the house expense, and
- 31:54Speaker 4: so I've asked him to kind of look into that
- 31:56Speaker 4: as well, but we haven't actually got something fully written out.
- 31:59Speaker 4: My star has a pretty basic budget or hers is fantastic,
- 32:03Speaker 4: but she sent me something that's sort of a very
- 32:07Speaker 4: basic version of hers to just get me started. But
- 32:10Speaker 4: I'm not really sure what I'm doing.
- 32:11Speaker 2: So now I'm going to fix it for you. Before
- 32:13Speaker 2: your money date. I'm going to give you access to
- 32:15Speaker 2: our money masterclass so that you can do that. This
- 32:17Speaker 2: spreadsheet in there like I made it, so I'm biased,
- 32:21Speaker 2: so take my advice however you want. But it is
- 32:23Speaker 2: next level, like you don't even have to do a
- 32:25Speaker 2: lot of the calculations because I've auto formulated them, and
- 32:28Speaker 2: you just put in all of your expenses and then
- 32:31Speaker 2: it'll spit out where you're spending it, what bank accounts
- 32:33Speaker 2: it needs to go in, what this looks like, how
- 32:36Speaker 2: it might work for you, and you can even put
- 32:38Speaker 2: in like money goals and what that looks like. You go,
- 32:41Speaker 2: here is my income, these are my expenses, and then
- 32:44Speaker 2: you go to the next sheet and it'll be like, okay, money, darist,
- 32:47Speaker 2: you have this much leftover from your budget to spend
- 32:50Speaker 2: on your goals. What's your emergency fund going to be
- 32:53Speaker 2: looking like? And then the next page, once you put
- 32:55Speaker 2: all that in, it's like, all right, here's the cash
- 32:57Speaker 2: flow system. Every single week, you need to transfer to
- 33:00Speaker 2: this account X to this account and don't forget red Joe,
- 33:03Speaker 2: that's going to come up in six months. But we're
- 33:05Speaker 2: saving for it over here, and I'm obsessed with it,
- 33:08Speaker 2: probably because I made it, but I'm going to give
- 33:10Speaker 2: you that, and then you could fill all of that
- 33:12Speaker 2: in before your money date and your partner's going to
- 33:14Speaker 2: be like, Okay, wizard, no worries, thank you.
- 33:17Speaker 4: So much. I was trying to write my own one,
- 33:18Speaker 4: and that's when I resorted to ask in my sister
- 33:21Speaker 4: because I was like, I don't understand excel. I don't
- 33:23Speaker 4: know how to use this.
- 33:24Speaker 2: It's hard and overwhelming if you don't get it. But
- 33:26Speaker 2: don't worry. You can't muck this up because I've actually
- 33:29Speaker 2: locked every single cell in it, so you can only
- 33:31Speaker 2: put numbers in and change like the names for things.
- 33:34Speaker 2: You can't break it because I've locked it.
- 33:37Speaker 4: Fantastic, that's what I need in my line.
- 33:40Speaker 2: I was like when I made it, I literally laughed
- 33:42Speaker 2: and was like, I'm going to lock this down so
- 33:44Speaker 2: that no one can mess with my formulas, because I
- 33:47Speaker 2: don't need someone accidentally messing with a formula and then
- 33:49Speaker 2: getting like the wrong output, and then I'd be mortified.
- 33:52Speaker 2: So no, we've like doubled down and I've even highlighted
- 33:56Speaker 2: these are the only boxes you can fill in. You
- 33:58Speaker 2: can change the names here. That's it.
- 34:01Speaker 4: Okay good, It sounds like it's yeah for me.
- 34:04Speaker 2: So far, so good. People tell me it's full proof.
- 34:07Speaker 2: We love that money doest. I have a bit of
- 34:09Speaker 2: a bone to pick with you, though, so I'll be
- 34:11Speaker 2: nice to you I'll give you the money masterclass. But
- 34:13Speaker 2: now you've got to sit down because I need to
- 34:15Speaker 2: have a hard word with you. You said, I used
- 34:17Speaker 2: to be in F and I was like, great, good reflection,
- 34:20Speaker 2: but I'm now an E and I was like, okay,
- 34:22Speaker 2: this is good, Like, let's have this conversation. You then
- 34:25Speaker 2: went on to explain that you know you've got the
- 34:29Speaker 2: goal of creating an emergency fund. You've already planned, you
- 34:32Speaker 2: know what scent Link is going to look like for
- 34:34Speaker 2: Matt Leeve. You've clearly got a very supportive partner who's,
- 34:37Speaker 2: you know, making sure that you're putting yourself in the
- 34:39Speaker 2: best possible position while you're going through this pregnancy. You
- 34:42Speaker 2: knew off the top of your head what you're super
- 34:44Speaker 2: was you have shares like you're an actually investor. Not
- 34:48Speaker 2: only are you an investor, you invested in twenty twenty
- 34:51Speaker 2: one one thousand dollars and now it's up to eighteen
- 34:53Speaker 2: hundred bucks, you're also on shares. E's I fully anticipated
- 34:57Speaker 2: someone who said that they were an E to say, no,
- 35:00Speaker 2: I actually don't invest yet. They no idea even what
- 35:03Speaker 2: it is, and that's not an issue. That was just
- 35:06Speaker 2: my expectation. You then went on to say, I had
- 35:09Speaker 2: a car loan of seventeen thousand dollars, brought my mum
- 35:12Speaker 2: in to negotiate it down because I'm a genius and
- 35:14Speaker 2: that's what I should have done. Didn't like the payments,
- 35:17Speaker 2: so they guess what I did, tripled them, So I
- 35:20Speaker 2: only have five hundred dollars left on that debt. I
- 35:23Speaker 2: know exactly what I'm earning in my retail jobs. Not
- 35:26Speaker 2: only do I have a retail job, I have two
- 35:28Speaker 2: of them, and I work six days a week. I'm
- 35:30Speaker 2: also pregnant. What the heck? You also explained how you're
- 35:34Speaker 2: using after pay as a cash flow tool, but knew
- 35:38Speaker 2: yourself so well that you didn't want two thousand dollars
- 35:41Speaker 2: on it, so negotiated them down. Actually got in contact
- 35:45Speaker 2: with them and said, can you please bring down my limit?
- 35:48Speaker 2: No one does that in advance. You know what your
- 35:50Speaker 2: tax return is going to be, and you're literally cash
- 35:54Speaker 2: planning in your head to look, I know that I've
- 35:57Speaker 2: got time and I don't have to submit my tax
- 35:59Speaker 2: return yet, so I'm not going to because I'm probably
- 36:01Speaker 2: gonna have to pay them three hundred dollars. Let's put
- 36:03Speaker 2: that off a little bit. Like you are smarter than
- 36:06Speaker 2: the average bear. If you had heard this money story
- 36:09Speaker 2: about anybody else, would you have been like, yeah, the
- 36:13Speaker 2: an E is fair.
- 36:15Speaker 4: No, I think I'm a bit harder on myself than
- 36:18Speaker 4: I would like to be. You think, well, I think
- 36:22Speaker 4: it comes from like all the past me, and now
- 36:24Speaker 4: that we kind of talk about it, I can see
- 36:26Speaker 4: that I've made a lot more growth.
- 36:28Speaker 2: You absolutely have. And then on top of that, I
- 36:31Speaker 2: can tell you're letting your money story define who you are, Like, yes,
- 36:36Speaker 2: you've come from a wealthy family and subsequently you learnt,
- 36:40Speaker 2: according to you, no money skills. But I would say
- 36:42Speaker 2: that you do have good money skills and are being
- 36:45Speaker 2: super harsh on yourself, but you cannot let yourself be
- 36:49Speaker 2: defined by your money story. Like you're the one that's
- 36:53Speaker 2: currently in control of your money story and where you're
- 36:55Speaker 2: going and what that's going to look like, and how
- 36:57Speaker 2: you and your partner deal with cash, and then how
- 36:59Speaker 2: you and your partner have the baby, and how you
- 37:01Speaker 2: communicate money conversations around her. Like an E, hypothetically, if
- 37:07Speaker 2: you were to become an a what kind of work
- 37:11Speaker 2: do you think that would take?
- 37:14Speaker 4: I think I would like to be out of debt,
- 37:16Speaker 4: and I'd like to have my emergency fund sort of
- 37:20Speaker 4: sorted so that I could start saving for like other
- 37:23Speaker 4: bits and pieces, because like I said, I'm still impulsive,
- 37:26Speaker 4: so I think i'd want to get on top of
- 37:28Speaker 4: that a little bit before I could say for certain
- 37:31Speaker 4: that I'm an A. But I think if I'm being
- 37:35Speaker 4: kinder on myself, maybe I'm a C right now, but
- 37:38Speaker 4: working my way up.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I love that. I feel like sometimes we get money
- 37:43Speaker 2: dirests on and it's this beautiful reflection that maybe they're
- 37:46Speaker 2: not doing as bad as they thought they would. And
- 37:50Speaker 2: I think the thing that I love about this is
- 37:52Speaker 2: you said, look, I really want to get on top
- 37:54Speaker 2: of my debt. I really want to create an emergency fund.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I really want to shift my mindset a bit. But
- 37:59Speaker 2: you're so of that. Like people who aren't changing and
- 38:04Speaker 2: are genuinely an E or an EF at money, they're
- 38:07Speaker 2: not talking about shifting their mindset. They're not, you know,
- 38:11Speaker 2: talking about getting on top of debt and having an
- 38:13Speaker 2: emergency fund, both of which are very bright lights in
- 38:17Speaker 2: the tunnel at the moment, because we know you're about
- 38:19Speaker 2: to get on top of your debt. We know that
- 38:21Speaker 2: you're planning to organize an emergency fund. Like I like
- 38:25Speaker 2: that you're a C. I can see that becoming an
- 38:27Speaker 2: A is definitely in your future. But I have loved
- 38:31Speaker 2: this money dory. I feel like it is such a
- 38:33Speaker 2: good reminder that we are all so harsh on ourselves
- 38:36Speaker 2: until we like zoom out. We have thousands of people
- 38:40Speaker 2: that write in to share their money stories with us,
- 38:42Speaker 2: and I'm so grateful for that. But even if you
- 38:46Speaker 2: don't end up on the show, maybe sitting down and
- 38:49Speaker 2: writing out your money story and answering all of the
- 38:52Speaker 2: money story questions like you know, what is your attitude
- 38:54Speaker 2: towards money? What would you grade yourself? You know, what
- 38:57Speaker 2: are your goals? How much are you spending? Like are
- 39:00Speaker 2: you investing? Are you in debt? And actually sitting down
- 39:02Speaker 2: and going, well, what does this actually look like? I
- 39:05Speaker 2: think so many of us would regrade ourselves and go, actually,
- 39:09Speaker 2: I'm doing pretty well and I'm pretty proud of myself.
- 39:11Speaker 2: So I hope that people, after listening to your money
- 39:14Speaker 2: story go if she thought she was an E and
- 39:17Speaker 2: got upgraded to a seat, I could probably do the same.
- 39:22Speaker 4: I hope. So I think that's why I wanted to
- 39:24Speaker 4: come on because as much as I love hearing everybody
- 39:26Speaker 4: who is fantastic, I also wanted to come on and
- 39:29Speaker 4: be an inspiration for somebody who's in the same situation
- 39:32Speaker 4: as me.
- 39:32Speaker 2: I did think it was going to go into unrelatable
- 39:35Speaker 2: territory when you did say I've got about one hundred
- 39:37Speaker 2: and eighty and I was like, sorry, what like thousand
- 39:40Speaker 2: in shares? Like this just became not the diary i'd anticipated,
- 39:44Speaker 2: but money, Darrist. Sadly we've run out of time, but
- 39:47Speaker 2: I have adored having this conversation with you. I'm so
- 39:50Speaker 2: excited for everything that's in your future. I'm so excited
- 39:54Speaker 2: that you get to go on the parenting journey and
- 39:56Speaker 2: that you're getting all your money together. I get extra
- 39:59Speaker 2: excited when people are only a couple of hundred dollars
- 40:02Speaker 2: off paying off their debt, like it's a good time
- 40:04Speaker 2: to be talking about money. So money, Doris, thank you
- 40:07Speaker 2: so much. I've adored this, and I know our community
- 40:10Speaker 2: will as well.
- 40:11Speaker 4: Thank you so much. I've really loved chatting to units
- 40:14Speaker 4: change my opinion of myself a little bit, which is
- 40:16Speaker 4: lovely good.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, thank you so much. The advice shared
