- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for October 29, 2026 Understanding the Why,
- 0:05How to Align Priorities with Your Spouse Yesterday I joked about the TP hanging
- 0:10the wrong way in our house because I'm trying to do marriage well.
- 0:13But caring about what your spouse thinks is a huge part of having a good marriage.
- 0:17Doing that with preference is easy. Doing it with priorities can be a struggle.
- 0:22One problem is we have limited time and money. You can only put so much into
- 0:25the Tier 1 box, and if you let your spouse fill it with what mattered to them,
- 0:29there may not be room or money for some things you think belong there.
- 0:33And that's going to cause some hard feelings. One thing that can help is talking about why.
- 0:38Why is this thing important to you? Going to Disneyland could be about building family memories.
- 0:44Perhaps the spouse who wants to go to Disney had great memories doing that as a child.
- 0:48Or maybe they didn't get to do
- 0:49such things and don't want their children cheated as they feel they were.
- 0:53Once the other spouse understands, then you can have a better discussion.
- 0:57Maybe you save for it, or you might decide an amusement park closer to home
- 1:01can provide what is desired for a fraction of the cost.
- 1:04Sometimes things are important because they provide security.
- 1:07It could be financial security, mental security, emotional security,
- 1:11or relationship security.
- 1:13Suggesting such a thing be moved to a lower tier is not going to be received well.
- 1:17Date night is an issue many couples can't agree on. Ask the one who is more
- 1:21interested in having date nights why they want them. What is it they enjoy?
- 1:26If sharing a new meal out is important, then doing date nights at home won't
- 1:30work. If trying new foods together is the goal, then takeout can work.
- 1:34Maybe the desire is intimate conversation, and that never seems to happen at home.
- 1:39If money is an issue, you could drive a short distance to watch the sunset and talk.
- 1:43If distractions are the issue, getting out of the house may be necessary.
- 1:47Or perhaps you could have a no-electronics evening each week.
- 1:51When you understand the why, it's easier to be creative. It can also be easier
- 1:55to say Yeah, we can make that a tier 1,
- 1:58One final note Don't cram too much into tier 1 Doing too much means you can't
- 2:03do it all well And it will wear you out trying Make margin a tier 1 thing This
- 2:08is Paul And sharing a sunset is doing marriage well.
