- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: something that does help me is a brain dump.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_01]: I will just sit down and write all the things that are on my mind because they're open tabs in my brain and they're all running.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_01]: You know what your computer runs slower when all your tabs are running.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the Beat Till You See at Podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_02]: I'm also Logan, Ply's instructor and fitness business coach.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_02]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_02]: My friends, action brings clarity.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_02]: And it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_02]: Each week my guests will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, be it.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back to the beat to you see a podcast.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_01]: We are in our second episode of the Regulation series.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: So if you have, this is your first time listening to us.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, welcome.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: Em, you should go listen to the first one because otherwise this will make you a sense.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: Ah, or you can listen to this one.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I believe are of you doing you.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm excited because the last episode we talked about not needing more discipline and not another journal and another plan, but really actually having awareness of when we're just regulated and regulated because when we are just regulated, we cannot be successful.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: And when we're regulated, we notice it's not about discipline.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's just about showing up being yourself.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: Being the version of you you always want to be, right?
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: You are definitely not able to be until you see it when you are just regulated overwhelmed, stressed out worrying, spiraling, all that stuff, right?
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: So how do we regulate ourselves in life gets life because I mean, just tell you life gets life every day, every day, every life gets life.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: I was having a really kind of solid, awesome day, and then I got some bad news.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: And so life got life eat today.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: On a day, when it should just be chill, just two days or two days for me, right?
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: So how do we not let our nervous system run the show?
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: Because, I mean, let me tell you right now, if I let my nervous system run the show after that news, it would not be recording this right now.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's the first show.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: because as able to understand how it's feeling, as able to take a moment for myself, I was able to do the things I need to do so that I could come back here and go, you know, I can do this right now.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: I can do this right now because this matters too.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: This matters as much as the other thing that's bothering matters, right?
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, my goodness, every time we open up our Instagrams or emails, something there to derail how we feel about ourselves about what's possible, all that stuff.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: So now, since we know what was keeping us stuck,
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: how do we actually shift our biology, our brain, our mood in the middle of a crazy day?
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: It might happen multiple times, but how do we do that?
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: So the thing I want to take away from this episode is regulate first to side, second.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: So you know this, I know you know this, I know there's, I know you know this, but just in case you need the reminder, we never send an email or make a pivot or critique ourselves in a dysregulate state, right?
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: When you
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: Have you ever, oh my god, why this, what the fuck is this happening?
- 3:11[SPEAKER_01]: And why is that happening?
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: Why is this person doing this?
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: And you go to respond and you, you know it's not the response you want to do.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: You send it and you are already filled with regretful because that's not how you are.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's not how you want to be perceived.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's not how you want to be perceived.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's not how you want to be able to receive that information.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: So we need to notice, become aware and then regulate ourselves before making the next decision.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: I will also say I heard this other thing that could be really helpful is the instant reaction we have is kind of a pattern, how we were raised, trained, the thing that got us to adulthood that made us feel safe.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: And then oftentimes we're like, I haven't gotten over that.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't, I still have that problem, but actually the second thought you have,
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: is the person you want to be it's the person how you want to react and so if you can instead of getting stuck on I don't want to react that I hate that I'm reacting like that and instead you go oh there's just that old brain my old thing and trying to run the show hold on I do this one thing over here and then I'm back to being the person I am.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: So we need to talk about your internal landscape, right?
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: We gotta talk about your autonomic nervous system.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not a scientist, but a simple explanation of our default survival.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: These are simple, okay, it's simple.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: But you've got blazer, the fight or flight, right?
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: You move fast, you breathe shallow, you get a little snappy.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's you.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: Something happens, you're ready to take action.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_02]: You're ready to kick some ass.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: You also can be a freezer, right?
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: You can freeze or fawns.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: You can go numb, right?
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: You can say, yes, the things you hate.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: Look, a fawn response, oh, I'm so sorry.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's my fault.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: I did that.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's not you calming the person down, but taking yourself down with it, right?
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: So we got to understand that.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's how things can react.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: right, those are the simple versions.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: And if you are having hormonal shifts, then your thrust hold for stress is lower.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: And so things that didn't bother us 10 years ago, could bother us now, and that's okay, right?
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: If you are dealing with just other health stuff,
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes you get activated a little more quickly, your threshold is lower.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: So those of you who already have a lot on your plate, you know, it can be harder to stay regulated.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: So I just want, I think it's really important to map out what's your internal landscape.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: What is your go to when things aren't going well?
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: What is the way that you tend to go?
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: In the last episode, I talked about how I will tend to worry about things that can't control.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then focus on all the things we haven't done.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: either.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll just like go, and that's not working.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: And that's not working.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: And that's not working.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: And Brad, hold on.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: We were talking about this one plugin that doesn't work.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: And now you're talking about 10 things we're still working on.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: Why are we catastrophizing?
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's me.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: Really important.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: That once we went to take a second to go, oh my, what are the signs that I'm not regulated so that then you can build your regulation toolkit, right?
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: Your real life regulation toolkit.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: So these are some tools that
- 6:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm given a few, right?
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: So, and if you come up with your own, let the be a pod note so we can share it with other people on FYF episode.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: But you can have something like a more like a top-down tool, a mental cognitive tool, some people like time boxing to worry windows.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: So, this is the idea of something comes up that you want to worry about, and you actually just go, oh, I'm going to put that at the 1pm.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: I can worry about that at 1pm, but right now I'm working on this.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: that is idea of parking the car or driving away, postponing the thing or park and then and worry, but don't try to do things the same time, but think you're working on an worry, so have some worry windows.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: That isn't something I could do because I have ADHD and sometimes I love to fuck around my calendar, so that's not for me, but it might be for you to worry window.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then maybe you don't have it scheduled to worry, but maybe when you start to where you're like, you know what?
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't me a worry window.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not worry about everything right now.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to get all on the table, get it out.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Get it out of my heart.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Get out of my mind.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a set of timer and now it's done.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Right, something that does help me is a brain dump.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: So I will just sit down and write don't all the things that are on my mind because they're open tabs in my brain and they're all running.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: And they are, you know, your computer runs slower when all your tabs are running.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: I will go, okay, hold on.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: I got too much in my mind.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: What is everything I think I need to get done?
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: And then you look at the list, holy fuck, that's so many things.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: No wonder I felt it's regulated.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_01]: No wonder I feel overwhelmed.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: I'm overwhelmed.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: There's too many things.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: I had a girlfriend who took all the things that she had to get done and she gave it her chat bot and her chat bot goes, well no wonder you're exhausted and filling over well, this is enough work for three years.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: So those were top down.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: Here's some bottom up tools.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_01]: This is more somatic, right?
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: So that's stuff you can do.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's mental cognitive, but also you can actually take action on it.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: This is bottom up to a some more body.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I think these are really great for when the mind really won't quiet down.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a five second psychological side.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about this a couple times on the pot.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's a two quick inhale so the nose and a long exhale to the mouth.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's just in and out, in and through the nose, out, right?
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, you do it a couple times and like literally resets how your body is.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: If you're weight training and you do a heavy weight lifting set if you do that afterwards, a couple times it'll reset the whole body.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: Also, you can do this.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: If you take your index finger and thumb together and you breathe in, it's more chest.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: If you take your middle finger and your thumb and you breathe in, it's more diaphragm.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: If you take your ring finger and your thumb and you breathe in, it's more stomach.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: And if you take your pinky and your thumb and you breathe in, it's more root, right?
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: So if you find yourself in that dyspherial state and you're taking short breaths, you can go to your pinky and your thumb and just
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: right and ground yourself down.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, takes so little time.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: You can do it in one breath.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: Another thing you do is just change the physical temperature.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: So the cold water to the face, right?
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: I actually do love my cold punch.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: It is set for a woman and pyramid deposits.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_01]: Not 32 degrees.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: But I do like it because I don't wake up going, oh my god, it's rainbows and butterflies.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so excited.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: I never get enough sleep.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: I wish I could get eight hours and my I can be in bed for eight and I get six and a half.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: My body just has a really hard time.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: Seven is really a sweet spot for me.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_02]: If I could just get seven it's right, but I still don't wake up going.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, life is great.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: But I get in that coal plunge.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I can take on this day.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: I can take on this day, right?
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: weighted blankets confirm a hug, right?
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I have an eye mask that is weighted that I'll just I can go I don't take a naps, but I could just put it on my eyes or I have a weighted blanket.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: We have a link for that that I can find for you guys.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: But I have this weighted blanket that I just love.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: It could just a grab it around me and I'm okay.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's a big hug, because what I don't want when I'm just really as a hug somebody else because I want their energy.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: And then this other one I think could be really helpful to get a micro dose concept.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: So a lot of people think, I need a spa today that'll relax me.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, I'll tell you right now what won't relax me is a full spa day.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be there as so many things I need to be doing right now.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: I should be doing these things by shooting these things.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: So when I'm just regulated a spa day, it's not what I need.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: But I really have found to be helpful is just taking 90 seconds of intentional breathing between calls.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: Walking around my block, it's a little hard in the summertime, but
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: fall through spring I can it takes me 12 minutes to walk around my block 15 if I take the dog because they like to smell things and even on the way out the door this day sucks I just by the time I get around the corner all right I got this right I got this you just need some things I have I have a send state it's this really cool tool that you can put on your chest and it really helps regulate your nervous system there's different HRZs of music you can play I have found
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: If I work with this one type of music on, I stay quite focused and the little upbeat so it keeps me positive and I love having it on the background.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: I get so annoyed when I have to turn it off.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: So I find that that can be really helpful when
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes it's not like you're not doing the tools, but there's just so much life-living that you need regular, regulated moments, regulating moments, right?
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: Because you're waiting for results from this thing and you're anticipating this thing.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: And then there's this going on and there's that going on, there's so much going on.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just one thing once a day that helps you it's 10 little things that I just keep bringing you back.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: And so this brings us to the self-trust.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: your future self.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: You're be it, tell yourself.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: When you take the time to listen to yourself, you can actually hear your intuition, right?
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: You can hear it.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: And so,
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: If you make listening to your intuition a priority, you'll actually want to do it more.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: And the thing is, is that when your brain is buzzing with anxiety, that intuition gets drowned out, it sounds like static.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not there.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think I would just say I really encourage you to spend time trying to hear your inner voice, your inner intuition so that
- 12:34[SPEAKER_01]: you get so obsessed with how helpful that is that you'd rather spend time there than in the dysfigulate state that probably feels safe because that's probably how you were raised in that felt safe to you.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_01]: For me, I find I know that I will do whatever it is I said I was going to do.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: Not because I'm disciplined, but because I have a history of achievements that I have done because I did the thing that I said I was going to do.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_01]: And so what I will say is if you haven't taken time to do a data thumb of just how much you have achieved and how much of the things you said you would do that you did do you need to do that because if you don't then you don't have self trust and if you don't have self trust you can't become a safe place for yourself.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: So no wonder you feel disfigulated no wonder you don't feel successful no wonder you think you need more discipline because you haven't just taken the time to honor all of the things you did we had a really great guest about resume building
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: And she talked about making sure you're writing on your achievements.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_01]: We have FYFs on this podcast.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: You're supposed to send them in.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're not going to send them in, it'll at least write them down, write your wins down, right?
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: My girlfriend wrote down her wins every single week.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: I put them in a jar and at the end of the year, she took off 52 and read them, right?
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: And some of them, oh my god, I forgot I did that.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever you need to do to build self-trust, you have to do, because without that, it's really hard to regulate, because you don't have a safe place to come back to.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll just say it's really hard to be it till you see it if you're current nervous system hand handled baseline stress.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: So if you are in a space, well, just your baseline stress is a lot for you.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_01]: I really encourage you to take some time to get honest about what is it that you are really responsible for what can we let go of.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: Well, can you say, I know I said, yes, this, but I need to lay that, what can we post poem?
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: What boundaries can we put in place?
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have a container of stress that you can't actually handle?
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: Life is stressful.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Stress also builds diamonds, guys.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: So stress is not bad.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: Stress also builds stronger bones.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: Stress is how you build stronger muscles.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: So stress is not bad, but we need to get your nervous system to a space that can handle your baseline stress.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: And then when it comes to being it till you see it,
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: taking the time to understand who is a version of you that you want to be and how did they handle it?
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: What do they do?
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: What actions do they take?
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: Are you taking those actions right now?
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: Can you do a version of that right now?
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: We can't do all of that.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: We can do a version of it.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: If you think that when you have more money, you'll take time off.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's a lie, you're telling yourself.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_01]: There are rich people who never stop working all the time.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'd be watching the white lotus.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: the Thailand one is perfect example of that.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: Are these people couldn't get rid of their cell phones?
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: So I just want to say, if you think, when I have this, then I'll have less stress, and I'll be more regulated, and more relaxed, that's not true.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: To practice for it right now.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes it means saying no, sometimes it means not talking to some people, sometimes it means just taking a break.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: It says, Intel, you can get, you got to know yourself, you got to have self-pressed to get to be able to be to you see it.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_01]: So what I like to say is, what's one thing is episode that you can take action on right now that will actually feel good to you and just fill overwhelming is it the worry box is it the brain dump is it making a list of all the things that are going on right now that you're supposed to be doing and that you're not and then seeing what you can get rid of which you can just go I can't do that right now.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: has it taking time to get back to your inner voice?
- 16:12[SPEAKER_02]: What is it that you are, can't do all it, don't tell me I do that one too.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: I would do that one too.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: You're just going to overwhelm yourself.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you're just going to just regulate yourself and find, regulate yourself.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: So let's not do that.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's also something I really think is important.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: Regulation is an act of self parenting, not a chore.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a task.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's just taking care of yourself.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: One other little tip that I want to give you is, maybe what you need to do is just set and alarm three times a day that asks yourself, how am I feeling right now?
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: How am I feeling right now?
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: How am I feeling?
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: Do I feel good right now?
- 16:50[SPEAKER_01]: How am I feeling?
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: I feel overwhelming.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: I feel excited right now and I feel overwhelming.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: I feel regulated, dysregulate.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: Just notice that maybe at the end of every day you feel dysregulate, okay?
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's an interesting pattern.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's good at wearing this.
