- 0:00Today's episode is sponsored by Bodega Sandwiches, the most delicious,
- 0:05filling, inexpensive meal you'll ever have.
- 0:08So my first year of the second term, which should have been my third term,
- 0:13Trump and his State of the Union last night.
- 0:15Insert theme song here. This is the Daily Sarcast. I give you the news and maybe a laugh.
- 0:20I'm Lindsay Vernick and today is February 25th, 2026.
- 0:25In real news, Catherine Hartley Short, the 42-year-old daughter of Martin Short,
- 0:30died this week in LA in what looks like suicide.
- 0:33She wasn't in Hollywood. She was a social worker.
- 0:36She was the person who helps other people through their worst days when she
- 0:40was fighting something herself.
- 0:42This is just a reminder that having a famous, successful, talented,
- 0:46and rich dad doesn't mean anything.
- 0:48Okay, well, it means some things, but you get my drift.
- 0:52New York got its first real blizzard this week, in a decade,
- 0:56and naturally the city said, let's have a snowball fight.
- 0:59A massive snowball fight got organized in Washington Square Park on Monday,
- 1:03and everyone showed up super excited and started throwing snow.
- 1:08The police came in because the world is in such high alert these days.
- 1:12Somebody called them since a lot of people were just throwing things at each other.
- 1:16Snowballs started hitting officers, and two got minor injuries.
- 1:20Police commissioner Jessica Tish calls it criminal, and Mom Donnie watched the
- 1:25same videos and was like, it just looks like a snowball fight.
- 1:28The internet immediately does what the internet does best, and created memes faster than anything.
- 1:35Now politicians are arguing over whether this was assault or just seasonal enthusiasm.
- 1:40Meanwhile, every other New Yorker is just thinking, we just survived a blizzard.
- 1:44What else are we supposed to do?
- 1:46It's Gen Z versus the New York city government.
- 1:50And honestly, if this is the biggest crisis of the week, I think we're doing pretty okay.
- 1:56The State of the Union was last night, if you care, and it was less State of
- 2:00the Union and more State of Donald.
- 2:03I mean, were we expecting anything less? So this is everything I watched before
- 2:07I went to bed last night and or before I had to turn off the TV because I was
- 2:11getting sick and could not bear watching anymore.
- 2:14So Trump opened in full victory lap mode. The economy is incredible.
- 2:19Inflation is basically cured. Eggs are down. Therefore, we are thriving.
- 2:24Never mind that overall food prices are still up year over year and beef is
- 2:29still 15% more expensive. But sure, eggs came down from $15 a few months ago.
- 2:35Then we move to foreign policy, where he claimed he ended eight wars.
- 2:39Eight. That would be impressive if most of them had actually ended.
- 2:44Some had ceasefires that collapsed. Some were in limited clashes. Some resumed fighting.
- 2:50Ukraine is still very much at war despite his previous promise to end it in 24 hours.
- 2:56We are well past 24 hours.
- 2:59He talked about Iran. He said that they will never get a nuclear weapon.
- 3:03He celebrated strikes on their nuclear facilities. He mentioned diplomacy.
- 3:08He did not explain what the end goal is. Is it regime change?
- 3:12Containment? Deal? A timeout?
- 3:15We still don't know, and chances are, he doesn't know either.
- 3:19Immigration was peak Trump. He spotlighted families of crime victims and then
- 3:24turned to Democrats and asked why they weren't standing up clapping.
- 3:28Meanwhile, the data shows a large share of people being detained or deported
- 3:31have no violent criminal convictions, but the messaging stays focused on the criminals.
- 3:38He promised to always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid,
- 3:43which sounds comforting but isn't when the Times flags that as false.
- 3:47He just reminds me of one of those guys who promises you everything and he's
- 3:51going to be the best guy you could ever meet and you want to believe that it's
- 3:55true, but you know and know for a fact that he's not capable of doing so.
- 4:01There were small cracks in the Democratic response during all this.
- 4:05Most stayed seated during his
- 4:07Venezuela remarks, but a couple Hispanic Democrats stood and applauded.
- 4:11So it wasn't total party unity, just a lot of side eye.
- 4:15So the overall vibe during all this was a lot of strength and credit taking and very little nuance.
- 4:21A lot of we-solved-it energy for things that are still actively happening.
- 4:25So that's what I got from all of that. I can't speak for anything that he said after 11 p.m.
- 4:31And just a reminder that he started talking at
- 4:339 p.m and these things aren't supposed to go on for more than
- 4:36like an hour but what else do
- 4:39we expect from this guy in Lindsay life so last night I was on my way home from
- 4:44an open mic and my phone was about to die go figure so for the first time I
- 4:50like actually looked up from not looking at my phone on a subway and I was standing
- 4:55and I saw all some really weird things happening.
- 4:59So I'm standing in the middle of the subway and I'm like holding onto the pole
- 5:02and I look over to my left and there's this guy looking at his phone and it
- 5:08looks like just like a thing, an aquarium.
- 5:12And he's just like staring at it and he's bumping his head. And I'm like,
- 5:15well, okay, I must be missing something here.
- 5:19And I'm looking at the aquarium And the photo of this tank and there's nothing in the tank.
- 5:25And I'm like, I must be missing something.
- 5:28This guy is just bobbing his head. And this goes on for like at least one whole subway stop.
- 5:34And I'm on an express train. So this is happening for more than three minutes.
- 5:38So at the next stop, I was like, I should probably leave. And then I'm like,
- 5:41wait, I want to see what he's actually staring at.
- 5:44So I continue looking for another few minutes.
- 5:49Then finally, he like swipes it away and it shows that he was literally just
- 5:53staring at a photo of an empty fish tank.
- 5:58And I was so confused that I look over to my right and I kid you not,
- 6:03when I look over to my right,
- 6:05there's just a girl watching a video of a stripper dancing on a pole and I look
- 6:12up and there's this little kid. He wasn't little.
- 6:16He was definitely like in his 20s or in his teens
- 6:19I sound so old that he was whatever a
- 6:21kid and he's just like totally leaned
- 6:24over in his seat like watching this girl's phone and she's
- 6:28just scrolling through her videos of just like maybe I guess it was her or her
- 6:33friend or a stripper just dancing so that's what I get for not keeping my head
- 6:39down staring at my phone on the subway things I'm thinking about well definitely that.
- 6:47But do people actually buy the churros on the subway? And if so, are they good?
- 6:53Because I've always wanted to try one.
- 6:55Cooking tip of the day. Don't put pepper on your tofu. Ew.
