Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: What's going on? Everyone?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Emily Abadi here, you're listening to five Minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I am feeling all sorts of ready for a Memorial
- 0:30Speaker 2: Day weekend in which I have absolutely no real plans.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I mean literally the things on my bucket list for
- 0:39Speaker 2: the weekend to do list. I suppose spend some time
- 0:42Speaker 2: by a pool. Check going to happen today on Friday,
- 0:46Speaker 2: clean the apartment check, probably going to do that on Saturday,
- 0:51Speaker 2: go to the beach check, going to do it on Sunday,
- 0:55Speaker 2: and find some sort of barbecue moment perhaps Monday, keeping
- 1:01Speaker 2: it low key. I feel as though I have been
- 1:06Speaker 2: a little bit all over the place with good reason.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I feel as though things are kind of rolling into
- 1:13Speaker 2: one another, that the projects that excite me, one thing
- 1:16Speaker 2: happens and then it's immediately onto a call, a zoom,
- 1:20Speaker 2: some sort of strategy thing for the thing that's happening
- 1:23Speaker 2: the following weekend. And it's lovely, don't get me wrong.
- 1:26Speaker 2: But something that I've really dialed into lately for myself
- 1:31Speaker 2: is understanding what it is that I need to do
- 1:35Speaker 2: to appreciate what's happening when it happens, Because when life
- 1:39Speaker 2: is coming at you fast, like that classic quote from
- 1:44Speaker 2: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, you miss things right. And so
- 1:49Speaker 2: I'm taking the time to write things down. I'm taking
- 1:51Speaker 2: the time to set aside time to be with myself,
- 1:55Speaker 2: which I'm traveling a lot, I'm often alone. But it's
- 2:00Speaker 2: one thing to be alone and mindlessly watching some sort
- 2:02Speaker 2: of a television show or maybe even enjoying a book
- 2:05Speaker 2: a little bit more productive use of time. But it's
- 2:08Speaker 2: another to actually be sitting with your feelings and asking yourself,
- 2:14Speaker 2: how do I feel right now? How did this feel yesterday?
- 2:17Speaker 2: What was a moment that really stuck out for me?
- 2:20Speaker 2: What was one thing that I tasted, one thing that
- 2:23Speaker 2: I said, one thing that I heard, one thing that
- 2:26Speaker 2: I smelled that I really appreciated. How can you be
- 2:30Speaker 2: more present with what is happening on a day today?
- 2:36Speaker 2: And as things have been pretty hectic, and I've been
- 2:39Speaker 2: trying to do the best I can with what I
- 2:42Speaker 2: have and navigating all the emotions that go hand in
- 2:45Speaker 2: hand with feeling slightly stretched thin that exercise that I
- 2:50Speaker 2: just mentioned the five senses touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste,
- 2:55Speaker 2: and I added said reflecting on one thing that really
- 2:58Speaker 2: stuck out to me, stay out to me in each
- 3:01Speaker 2: of those areas really helps me come into my body,
- 3:05Speaker 2: be present with what's happening, and do that next critical
- 3:09Speaker 2: step the digest. Let me give an example of how
- 3:13Speaker 2: this showed up for me recently. A couple weeks back,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I had a big event that I hosted along with Birkenstock.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I have a campaign that is coming out with Birkenstock
- 3:24Speaker 2: in the near future that I'm amped on, and that
- 3:27Speaker 2: event was on a Thursday evening. I marked off my calendar,
- 3:33Speaker 2: blocked off my calendar on Friday morning until noon to
- 3:38Speaker 2: do the things that I needed to do to reflect
- 3:40Speaker 2: on that experience, to really digest that experience. I know
- 3:48Speaker 2: that by taking this time to digest the experience, not
- 3:52Speaker 2: only can I be a better partner to perhaps the
- 3:55Speaker 2: brands that I work with, or a partner to my community,
- 3:59Speaker 2: but I can also feel more confident on how to
- 4:03Speaker 2: show up and do it yes again, but also do
- 4:06Speaker 2: it better the next time. It helps me be a
- 4:09Speaker 2: better me. And so this concept of are you digesting
- 4:14Speaker 2: your life? You're not just being present, You're not just
- 4:17Speaker 2: showing up and paying attention and giving others your all,
- 4:20Speaker 2: not staring at your phone in public. You get the gist,
- 4:23Speaker 2: but then are you taking your experiences and really paying
- 4:29Speaker 2: attention to what's going on, how they're impacting you, and
- 4:33Speaker 2: how you can use the knowledge the information that experience
- 4:38Speaker 2: to your advantage to inform your best self moving forward.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Something to think on. My listener question for you this week,
- 4:47Speaker 2: what is one experience from the past seven days that
- 4:51Speaker 2: you want to take time and have a post mortemon
- 4:53Speaker 2: What is one experience from the past seven days that
- 4:57Speaker 2: you want to take some time to digest and have
- 5:00Speaker 2: a post More tom on and now a listener question.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Hi Emily, this is Leah in New York City, longtime listener,
- 5:09Speaker 1: first time caller. I know you've addressed burnout and when
- 5:13Speaker 1: to listen to your body when it's saying it needs rest,
- 5:15Speaker 1: But how do you mentally get over that hurdle pun
- 5:19Speaker 1: intended of being okay with resting. I am someone who
- 5:24Speaker 1: tells myself every week to take a rest day and
- 5:26Speaker 1: doesn't always end up that way because then I feel
- 5:29Speaker 1: bad about it. I feel like these days there's a
- 5:31Speaker 1: lot of outside pressure to always be going harder or
- 5:34Speaker 1: running more miles, getting in those workouts every day, and
- 5:37Speaker 1: I wanted to see how you combat those external factors
- 5:40Speaker 1: and just be confident in a rest day without feeling
- 5:43Speaker 1: like your progress is stinted or that your body actually
- 5:46Speaker 1: doesn't need it, or you just feel bad about not
- 5:48Speaker 1: doing a lot for a day. Thank you so much
- 5:51Speaker 1: for always being so open and honest with us, and
- 5:53Speaker 1: have a good one.
- 5:55Speaker 2: You know, Leo. What's ironic is I took a rest
- 5:58Speaker 2: day today and it's been a minute since I have
- 6:03Speaker 2: gone to bed the night before a day where I
- 6:06Speaker 2: don't have a strength workout and didn't think to myself like, oh,
- 6:10Speaker 2: I still have a run tomorrow, I'm going to go
- 6:12Speaker 2: to yoga tomorrow or whatever. No, I woke up today
- 6:16Speaker 2: and knew that the only thing that I was going
- 6:19Speaker 2: to do to move my body was to go on
- 6:22Speaker 2: a very nice, leisurely three mile walk with some coffee
- 6:27Speaker 2: around my neighborhood. What you're saying, however, is entirely understandable. Right.
- 6:33Speaker 2: It's this external pressure that we're always supposed to be
- 6:36Speaker 2: doing something. But I would encourage you to reframe the
- 6:41Speaker 2: way that you're thinking about a rest day, and you
- 6:45Speaker 2: can do this in two ways. The first thing is
- 6:47Speaker 2: a rest day doesn't mean that you are entirely off
- 6:51Speaker 2: of all forms of movement. You want to be moving
- 6:53Speaker 2: your body in some way throughout the day, even if
- 6:57Speaker 2: it is something as simple as closing your rings. If
- 7:00Speaker 2: you happen to wear an Apple watch, so that means
- 7:03Speaker 2: you're standing up over the course of ten hours at
- 7:07Speaker 2: some point right you're moving your body, walking a certain
- 7:10Speaker 2: amount of steps that make you feel good. You're getting
- 7:13Speaker 2: in those thirty minutes of exercise. And I say the
- 7:15Speaker 2: word exercise here in air quotes because exercise on your
- 7:19Speaker 2: rest day could be, just like I explained earlier, a
- 7:22Speaker 2: nice walk in the morning. It could be if you
- 7:25Speaker 2: happen to live in the suburbs, I'm like me parking
- 7:28Speaker 2: farther away from a store that you're going into to
- 7:30Speaker 2: run an Errand it might be taking your afternoon meeting
- 7:33Speaker 2: with your boss off of a zoom and walking around
- 7:37Speaker 2: the block, or even just some light stretching. Whatever it is.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Reframing the way that you think about the word rest
- 7:43Speaker 2: to encompass the fact that you're resting from what otherwise
- 7:48Speaker 2: you may associate as your go to way to sweat.
- 7:52Speaker 2: So your rest day maybe the day that you don't
- 7:55Speaker 2: go for a run, or you don't lift weights, or
- 7:59Speaker 2: you don't go to the Dan cardioclass that you've been
- 8:01Speaker 2: loving on for the last three months. Instead, ask yourself,
- 8:05Speaker 2: what is a nourishing way that I can move my
- 8:08Speaker 2: body that gives back to myself, that feels good, and
- 8:12Speaker 2: that is the new rest day. The other thing to
- 8:16Speaker 2: take into account on a rest day is that you
- 8:18Speaker 2: are doing something kind for yourself. You are giving your
- 8:22Speaker 2: body a gift, and you're also enabling yourself to take
- 8:27Speaker 2: the time that otherwise would be spent perhaps working out,
- 8:30Speaker 2: and invest that in other things like your family, like
- 8:33Speaker 2: your work. Remember that a day of rest also allows
- 8:37Speaker 2: your body to repair tissues that are damaged from exercise.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Not to be alarmed, it's a normal part of exercise.
- 8:43Speaker 2: There are small micro tears that happen in the muscles
- 8:46Speaker 2: that naturally repair themselves over the course of forty eight hours.
- 8:49Speaker 2: So with that said, by giving yourself this time to
- 8:52Speaker 2: allow your body to heal, you are actually allowing and
- 8:56Speaker 2: helping yourself show up better in the long haul. There's
- 9:00Speaker 2: gonna be a point, and candidly, I felt like I
- 9:03Speaker 2: was there last night when I was running over the
- 9:05Speaker 2: Williamsburg Bridge. I went to go support a friend an
- 9:08Speaker 2: event that she was hosting and involved a run and
- 9:11Speaker 2: then some really awesome breath work shout out to Christina Centenari.
- 9:15Speaker 2: And I was running up the bridge and I felt
- 9:19Speaker 2: like I had nothing to give, and it was a
- 9:21Speaker 2: blaring signal. It was like, Emily, take a second, It's okay.
- 9:26Speaker 2: And so I went to bed and I woke up
- 9:28Speaker 2: today and I embraced the rest day. Again. It's not easy, right,
- 9:35Speaker 2: and I understand that societal pressure that you're talking about,
- 9:38Speaker 2: but remember you only have one body, and in order
- 9:42Speaker 2: to do the things that excite you, in order to
- 9:44Speaker 2: move the way that you want to, you need to
- 9:46Speaker 2: prioritize recovery to be a better you. Now, make sure
