- 0:00Well, hello, and welcome to the Modern Ian podcast.
- 0:05I'm your host, Kimberly Roberts of Sulfian, and I am so glad
- 0:08you're here. I want to take a moment to help
- 0:11you understand what this space is all about, especially if
- 0:15you're new here, and how this podcast can support you.
- 0:20This podcast is really geared for busy women, especially over
- 0:25the age of 40, who feel like they're constantly on the go,
- 0:29taking care of everything and everyone.
- 0:32But you know what? Not taking care of themselves.
- 0:36And overtime, that can start to look like feeling burnt out,
- 0:40overwhelmed, tense, tired, but wired or just disconnected.
- 0:47What I share here is a different approach.
- 0:51Instead of pushing harder or doing more, we focus on slowing
- 0:56down, supporting your nervous system, and creating a sense of
- 1:00safety in your body. Because here's the thing, when
- 1:05your body feels safe, everything starts to shift.
- 1:09Your energy improves, your mind becomes clear, your body
- 1:13softens, and you will begin to feel more like yourself again.
- 1:19Inside this podcast you'll find simple practices using in yoga,
- 1:23acupressure, reflexology, breath work, mindfulness.
- 1:28These are all designed to fit into what I call real life, even
- 1:33when you only have a couple of minutes.
- 1:36And if you're looking for more support, you can come and join
- 1:39me inside my Patreon. That's where I share full Yan
- 1:43yoga classes, guided practices for emotional support, nervous
- 1:47system reset, and even nourishing recipes to support
- 1:51your overall well-being. It's really a space where you
- 1:56can go deeper, at your own pace and in a way that feels
- 2:00supportive, not overwhelming. So whether you're listening
- 2:05while walking, resting, or just taking a moment for yourself,
- 2:09I'm so glad you're here because you've landed in the right
- 2:12place. Take a deep breath, let those
- 2:16shoulders soften, and let's begin.
- 2:19Why your body won't let you sleep even when you're
- 2:23exhausted. Put your hand up, if you know
- 2:27exactly what I mean, 'cause this is what we are diving into today
- 2:33on the Modern Yin podcast. So welcome.
- 2:39So there's a moment and I know if you're a woman and you're
- 2:42here, you know this well, you're exhausted.
- 2:48Your body is tired, you've been going all day long and you just
- 2:54cannot wait to get into bed. But when you finally get in
- 3:00there and you got your comfy duvet and you're lying on your
- 3:04silk pillow and you're like, I'm so ready for this.
- 3:10But instead of drifting off, something else is happening.
- 3:15All of a sudden your mind wakes up or your body feels kind of
- 3:21twitchy and wired. Or here's a classic 1 you fall
- 3:26asleep only to wake up at 2:00 or 3:00 AM in the morning
- 3:31staring at the alarm clock and the question becomes like why
- 3:38the heck can't I sleep when I'm this tired?
- 3:44And that is frustrating. It's confusing, it's even a
- 3:49little defeating because you're like, I'm so tired, why am I not
- 3:54sleeping? But what I want to offer you
- 3:58today is this sleep isn't just about being tired.
- 4:03It's actually about whether your body feels safe enough to let
- 4:07go. So I'm going to repeat that
- 4:10again because I really want this to land.
- 4:13Sleep isn't just about being tired.
- 4:17In fact, it's often about whether your body feels safe
- 4:22enough to let go. This is huge.
- 4:26We're going to dive deep into this next.
- 4:29OK? Because this was a piece that I
- 4:32missed for a really long time. When all the other pieces of the
- 4:37equation were working well, I was like, why am I still not
- 4:41sleeping? So I want you to think about
- 4:45sleep for a moment. Sleep requires safety.
- 4:52So sleep is one of the most vulnerable states your body
- 4:55enters, right? You're letting go of control,
- 5:01you're letting go of awareness, you're letting go of doing.
- 5:04You are asleep. You do not know what's going
- 5:08around your environment. You're asleep.
- 5:11You have no idea. And here's the thing, your
- 5:18nervous system will only allow sleep when it feels safe.
- 5:27So you might be thinking, yeah, but I'm in my home.
- 5:31I'm in my comfy bed. I've got all the things in
- 5:34place. The diffuser is going.
- 5:36I've got music. It's nice and dark.
- 5:39It's cool. It's like, isn't that safe?
- 5:43But here's the thing. If your nervous system is still
- 5:47in a state of bracing, still scanning, processing, holding
- 5:52tension, it's going to be really hard to resist that transition
- 5:57into feeling safe. And it's not because your
- 6:01nervous system is doing something wrong.
- 6:04It's actually because it's doing its job.
- 6:08Because you see your body is always trying to protect you
- 6:13even when there's no immediate threat.
- 6:20OK, does that land? Because we're going to keep
- 6:23going. We're going to talk about the
- 6:25tired, but I'm wired feeling. And this is honestly, this is
- 6:30something I see all the time from my patients in my
- 6:35reflexology practice. I hear it from my students on my
- 6:39Patreon. They're like, why am I so tired?
- 6:43But I'm so wired at the same time.
- 6:49These are women who are completely exhausted, but their
- 6:54bodies, they just won't settle. This is what we call the tired
- 7:00but wired feeling. You see, your body is physically
- 7:05depleted. But, and here's the big but your
- 7:13nervous system is still activated.
- 7:20What does that mean? It means cortisol has not fully
- 7:25come down yet. Adrenaline is still circulating.
- 7:31There might be glucose like blood sugar issues happening.
- 7:36So instead of softening into that sleep, your system stays
- 7:42slightly alert, just enough that it kind of shows up, like your
- 7:48mind is racing a little, your body feels twitchy, restless.
- 7:54You just have that inability to fully relax.
- 8:00It's not failure, it's Physiology, right?
- 8:04Because your body is always trying to protect you even when
- 8:09there is not an immediate threat.
- 8:18So hopefully this is landing because now I'm going to put a
- 8:21little different spin, a little different lens on things.
- 8:24We're going to talk about the Chinese medicine perspective.
- 8:27OK, That one to 3:00 AM wake up. Now.
- 8:33If you're a woman and you're over 40, I can 100% guarantee
- 8:38you that you have hit that before.
- 8:42Suddenly you're wide awake and you look at the clock and it's
- 8:451:30 in the morning and you're like, what the F?
- 8:52So here's the thing, if you've been listening to some of my
- 8:55other podcast episodes, you probably have heard me talk
- 8:59about the liver system. But we're going to talk about it
- 9:02a little more here because between 1:00 and 3:00 AM, that's
- 9:09the liver system time in Chinese medicine.
- 9:14It's the time where the liver system is going through its
- 9:20energetic shift, through the Meridian system, through the TCM
- 9:26body clock. And you see, your liver is
- 9:30responsible for that smooth flow of energy and emotions in the
- 9:34body. This time frame is also when the
- 9:39body naturally processes and moves things that haven't been
- 9:43fully digested yet during the day.
- 9:48So if there's stored frustration, unprocessed
- 9:53emotions, or any kind of stagnation in the system, this
- 9:59is the time frame that it shows up.
- 10:02And yeah, it can certainly wake you up.
- 10:05It's not random. It's actually rhythmical.
- 10:12Your body is trying to move something through.
- 10:15But if your nervous system is tight or still bracing, guess
- 10:20what? That movement gets interrupted.
- 10:23It's kind of like all of a sudden you've got a garden hose
- 10:27with water flowing through it and it's just flowing like a
- 10:30breeze, and all of a sudden you put a kink in it and all of a
- 10:35sudden it's like, why is the water not flowing?
- 10:39It's exactly the same thing. So why does your mind get so
- 10:48busy at night when you're so freaking exhausted, right?
- 10:53It's because during the day, you're occupied, you're doing,
- 10:56you're solving, you're responding.
- 10:58There's like this continuous, constant input of data in and
- 11:03out, in and out, in and out. But at night, there's space.
- 11:12There's lots of space. And in that space, what you
- 11:18haven't processed already begins to rise.
- 11:23Things like thoughts, things like emotions, things like
- 11:32mental loops. And this isn't because your mind
- 11:38is the problem, it's because your nervous system finally has
- 11:44the quiet it needs to process right.
- 11:49But without nervous system regulation, that processing can
- 11:53feel really overwhelming instead of settling.
- 12:01So if all of this is landing right now, you're like, OK, I'm
- 12:07getting this. Let's talk about the shift that
- 12:15you need to make. You don't need to force sleep.
- 12:21OK? This is where we really start to
- 12:24have a mindset shift here. I want to say it again,
- 12:29something really important here. Sleep is not something you
- 12:35force. It's something you allow.
- 12:39And allowing sleep means preparing the body to feel safe
- 12:45enough to let go. OK, allowing sleep means
- 12:50preparing your body to feel safe enough to let go.
- 12:57Now what does that actually look like while slowing down earlier
- 13:02in the evening? Let's get off the scrolling and
- 13:06watching the news. Supporting your nervous system
- 13:12through breath, gentle yin practices, reflexology,
- 13:16acupressure, meditation. These are not as a routine to
- 13:21get sleep right. I want you to think of it this
- 13:26way. Instead, it's a way to
- 13:28communicate with your body that you're safe now and again.
- 13:32Remember, the body needs to feel safe.
- 13:37The nervous system needs to feel safe in order for sleep to
- 13:42happen. And when your body and your
- 13:47nervous system believes that you're safe, then sleep becomes
- 13:54available again. You see the the loop I'm making
- 13:59here? It's not about forcing the
- 14:01sleep. It's about inviting the nervous
- 14:04system and the body to feel safe.
- 14:09You can be in the coziest bed in the most luxurious sheets.
- 14:15And I've been there because I've made my bedroom an absolute
- 14:19Oasis. It is dark.
- 14:21I've got sleep mask. I, I wear a sleep mask over my
- 14:25eyes. I have a, a silk pillowcase.
- 14:30I have a silk I masculine. I said that before.
- 14:37I have beautiful sheets, the most fluffy duvet.
- 14:43I've got a humidifier going in the room so that, you know, the
- 14:46moisture is right and it's nice and cool.
- 14:50And so that's what I used to think, making your sleep happen.
- 14:57Those are all kind of like nice to haves.
- 15:00But The thing is, if your nervous system is still bracing,
- 15:03if it's still on and it doesn't feel safe, it is especially not
- 15:08going to let go when you're supposedly in the most
- 15:11vulnerable state. You're asleep, you have no idea
- 15:16what's going on around you. So this is something that I've
- 15:24really worked on a lot because, and I know you can relate to
- 15:29this, when your sleep is crap, nothing works.
- 15:34Everything is an effort, like I mean, a major effort to happen,
- 15:39right? Even the simplest of things.
- 15:42It's like, my God, why is this so difficult?
- 15:45Why is this just so taxing? It's not.
- 15:50It's just if you're not sleeping, nothing works.
- 15:55So this is something that I'm really starting to focus on
- 15:58inside my Patreon space right now.
- 16:02I've already got some simple creative ways and supportive
- 16:06ways to help your body unwind before sleep.
- 16:11I've got an entire collection called Sleep and Deep Rest.
- 16:15It's yen practices. We've got reflexology, we've got
- 16:18gentle nervous system regulation.
- 16:21Because here's the thing again, sleep isn't something that we
- 16:25fix at night. It's something we prepare for
- 16:29throughout the day. OK, It's not enough just to be
- 16:36like, OK, I'm going to unwind for half an hour before I go to
- 16:40bed. That might work sometimes,
- 16:43depending on what you've had on your plate that day.
- 16:47But if you've had a day where you've been under a lot of
- 16:51stress and your nervous system has been really taxed, you need
- 16:56moments throughout the day to restore.
- 17:00And what does that look like? Because some of you might be
- 17:02going, hey, you know, I got a full schedule.
- 17:04I don't have like half an hour or an hour.
- 17:06I don't even have 15 minutes. You know what the bonus is?
- 17:10You don't. You need 55 minutes, maybe two
- 17:15or three times a day. Literally just instead of
- 17:18spending that 5 minutes scrolling through Insta, how
- 17:23about instead you spend 5 minutes focusing on your breath?
- 17:29Because if your body has been feeling wired or restless or
- 17:33resistant throughout the day, you're not going to sleep well
- 17:39at night unless you take a really long time to decompress
- 17:45before bed. And let's face it, who has that
- 17:48amount of time, right? So on my Patreon, you're going
- 17:55to find practices there that help you soften, that help you
- 18:00release the bracing. And I'm just getting started
- 18:05with this because this is literally a heartbeat passion
- 18:08for me. And if you missed my episode
- 18:14last week on food and nervous system regulation, you are going
- 18:18to want to go and listen to that because this is something else
- 18:22that I'm going to dive a little bit deeper into.
- 18:24And I have been already on my Patreon and I've been starting
- 18:27to put up recipes as well. Because here's the thing, if you
- 18:32don't eat well throughout your day, you're going to sleep like
- 18:35crap. And I can guarantee you that.
- 18:38Because you know what? I'm going to tell you something
- 18:41that happened to me not that long ago.
- 18:43It was actually a few nights ago.
- 18:45So I had a pretty crazy day and my breakfast was not
- 18:52substantial. I didn't have enough protein at
- 18:55breakfast. And then lunch rolled around and
- 19:00I thought I was having enough. I had enough protein, but I
- 19:03didn't have enough fiber. So then I skipped an afternoon
- 19:07snack, which was not a good idea because I didn't have enough
- 19:11fiber at lunch. And so by the time dinner rolled
- 19:16around, I was tired. I hadn't spent any time, even 5
- 19:21minutes restoring throughout the day.
- 19:24So I spent 5 minutes just before making my dinner.
- 19:28And then when I went to make dinner, I thought OK, I was
- 19:33having eggs, I was having some ham, and I was also having a
- 19:39mixed vegetable with tahini sauce and a few baby roasted
- 19:44potatoes. So here's the thing.
- 19:48I had enough protein at dinner, but the fiber, the vegetables I
- 19:53had were I had Peppers, I had zucchini and those are great,
- 20:03but they're not really high, high fiber.
- 20:06So I should have added something a little more like maybe some
- 20:09broccoli or some cauliflower or cabbage, something with a little
- 20:14bit more substance in the fiber department, and I didn't.
- 20:20So then I went to decompress and do some yen and by the time I
- 20:24went to bed, I was exhausted. But guess what?
- 20:27I woke up at 1:00 AM and I was hungry.
- 20:31So I had a glucose hit, low blood sugar, cortisol spiked,
- 20:39and all of a sudden I couldn't sleep.
- 20:41I was so restless. So I did something that I hate
- 20:44to do, but I had to do it. I went and had something to eat.
- 20:49Is that ideal at 1:00 AM? Especially when your liver
- 20:54system is moving through its energetic shift?
- 20:57No, but I needed to sleep so I did it and I was able to fall
- 21:02back asleep. But then here's the thing, the
- 21:05next morning when I woke up and I looked at my aura ring stats
- 21:09for my sleep, it was crap. The restlessness was high, sleep
- 21:15quality was low. I ended up only sleeping 6 1/2
- 21:20hours, which for my chronotype and my system I need 7 1/2
- 21:25hours. So now I was in a sleep dead of
- 21:27an hour and I had no energy. So what was my day like?
- 21:33It was crap. I was exhausted.
- 21:36I didn't do any workout because I didn't have the energy for it.
- 21:40And I put my aura ring on rest mode and I focused on making
- 21:47sure I was hitting high fiber and high protein every single
- 21:51meal and having at least one snack.
- 21:57So I want to tie this in if that, if your body won't let you
- 22:02sleep, it's not because it's broken.
- 22:05It's communicating with you and it's asking for different layers
- 22:09of support. What does that look like?
- 22:13Breath work, meditation, nervous system regulation through yen
- 22:19practices, acupressure, reflexology, eating well, taking
- 22:25moments to restore throughout the day.
- 22:29And when you start listening to all of that instead of forcing,
- 22:34that's when things are going to start to shift, when sleep is
- 22:39becoming less of a struggle and more of a return.
- 22:46This is modern yin. This is where the stillness does
- 22:50the real work. Sleep is not something your body
- 22:59does when it's tired. It's something your body does
- 23:03when it feels safe. And I'm going to leave you with
- 23:08that and I'll see you in the next episode.
- 23:16Thanks for pressing play today. Today's episode supported you in
- 23:21any way. The next best step is to come
- 23:24practice with me. Inside my Patreon, I share
- 23:28simple Yum yoga, acupressure, reflexology, and nervous system
- 23:33practices designed for busy women who want to feel calm,
- 23:37grounded, and fasten their bodies without needing a ton of
- 23:41time. You'll also find full classes,
- 23:45guided practices, and even nourishing recipes to support
- 23:48your well-being. Until next time, take a deep
- 23:53breath, slow things down, and take care of you and I'll see
- 23:57you in the next episode. Thanks so much for pressing play
- 24:02today.
