Transcript
- 0:00Dr C: Hola and welcome back to the live podcast where we learn, inspire, flourish, and evolve together on the journey to our best, most authentic selves.
- 0:09Dr C: I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:10Dr C: C, and today's conversation is all about staying grounded in your purpose.
- 0:14Dr C: And we'll be looking at it through the lens of intellectual and emotional wellness with a vital touch of occupational and social wellness woven right in.
- 0:24Dr C: Have you ever poured your heart into a project, a career path, or a labor of love, only to find yourself staring at the back-end metrics, wondering, is this really making an impact?
- 0:38Dr C: Is the investment worth the energy?
- 0:41Dr C: Earlier this week, I found myself in that exact emotional crossword.
- 0:47Dr C: The production calendar was heavy, the consulting schedule was packed, the temptation to step back and say, let me just stick to my traditional lane was knocking at the door.
- 0:59Dr C: But right when mental friction peaks, unexpected motivation often enters the room.
- 1:05Dr C: Today we're exploring what happens when fatigue clouds our vision, why prioritizing our joy is not a luxury, and how a single human connection can remind us that happiness must be our enduring legacy.
- 1:19Dr C: So let's start in our learn pillar by unpacking what is actually happening neurologically and psychologically when purpose-driven work starts feeling like heavy friction.
- 1:28Dr C: The World Health Organization classifies workplace burnout as an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, categorized by feelings of energy depletion, increased mental distance from one's tasks, and a reduced sense of professional ethics.
- 1:47Dr C: When you build something out of passion, as I have with the podcast, whether launching a community initiative, right, leading a team or creating content, the initial adrenaline inevitably gives way to operational grinding.
- 2:02Dr C: You begin looking at detached numbers, right?
- 2:04Dr C: Your metrics, uh spreadsheets, and analytical dashboards.
- 2:09Dr C: When human effort gets reduced to digital analytics, our brains experience an emotional deficit.
- 2:16Dr C: We lose proximity to the beneficiary of our work.
- 2:21Dr C: The biggest misconception people have about purpose-driven work is the myth that passion insulates you from fatigue.
- 2:30Dr C: Society tells us that if we love the work we do, you'll never work a day in your life.
- 2:36Dr C: That is empirically false.
- 2:38Dr C: In fact, high-purpose leaders and caregivers are statistically at higher risk for emotional exhaustion because their identity is inextricably intertwined with their output.
- 2:51Dr C: When we don't immediately see the needle move, guilt sets it.
- 2:55Dr C: We start believing the lie that taking time to rest or protect our peace is somehow letting down permission.
- 3:01Dr C: See, authentic wellness demands that we challenge that narrative.
- 3:06Dr C: To sustain intellectual and emotional stability, we have to recognize that our output cannot exist without self-restoration.
- 3:15Dr C: This brings us to our inspired paper.
- 3:18Dr C: And today I have to share a personal story that happened to me just this week.
- 3:22Dr C: I have been hosting the live podcast for a little over a year now.
- 3:24Dr C: And let me be transparent with you as your trusted friend.
- 3:28Dr C: Podcasting is hard work.
- 3:30Dr C: It's script writing, empirical vetting, recording, editing, and balancing production against my executive consulting and my leadership duties.
- 3:40Dr C: Just days ago, I was looking at the back-end stats and thinking, is anybody truly taking this in?
- 3:46Dr C: Am I moving the needle?
- 3:48Dr C: Maybe it's time to retire the microphone and focus strictly on my consulting and my leadership duties.
- 3:56Dr C: Then, like it always happens, out of nowhere, an unexpected email landed through the contact portal of my website.
- 4:05Dr C: It was from a dedicated listener named Monica from Ohio.
- 4:09Dr C: Monica and I connected this week for about 45 minutes in a virtual conversation.
- 4:15Dr C: So many of my listeners, when we connect, um, I hear, Dr.
- 4:18Dr C: C, you legitimized what I was going through.
- 4:21Dr C: You reminded me that prioritizing myself isn't something to apologize for.
- 4:25Dr C: Speaking with Monica completely centered me.
- 4:29Dr C: In psychology, Dr.
- 4:31Dr C: Adam Grant's research on relational job design demonstrates that when professionals have direct personal contact with the end beneficiaries of their labor, their motivation, persistence, and emotional resilience spikes significantly.
- 4:46Dr C: Monica didn't just receive value from this platform.
- 4:50Dr C: She poured straight back into my cup.
- 4:53Dr C: She reaffirmed that if we can help one person normalize prioritizing their wellness without guilt, every single ounce of effort is worth it.
- 5:03Dr C: Thank you, Monica.
- 5:05Dr C: Because you gave me more energy.
- 5:08Dr C: You gave me a breath of life to keep going, to keep serving my purpose.
- 5:18Dr C: So let's pause right here and take a deep grounding breath together.
- 5:23Dr C: In our learn segment, we uncovered why purpose fatigue happens when we disconnect from human impact and drown in operational mechanics.
- 5:32Dr C: In the Inspire, Monica's story reminded us that our labor of love leaves invisible ripples, even when the daily analytics seem quiet.
- 5:40Dr C: So let's move into flourish, where we translate awareness into actionable behavior.
- 5:47Dr C: If you're feeling overwhelmed in your professional or personal life right now, here are three micro strategies to ground your purpose and protect your emotional wellness.
- 5:58Dr C: First, the beneficiary anchor audit.
- 6:02Dr C: It's the first practical step.
- 6:04Dr C: When routine tasks start feeling draining, move your focus away from the aggregate metrics and zero in on individual impact.
- 6:14Dr C: This week, identify one person who has benefited from your presence, your support, or your work.
- 6:21Dr C: Keep a dedicated folder or journal.
- 6:23Dr C: It's what I call a cup-filling archive.
- 6:26Dr C: Fatigue creeps in, review that evidence to re-engage your neural reward pathways.
- 6:32Dr C: Second, cognitive decoupling, dismantling the self-care guilt loop.
- 6:38Dr C: So overcoming obstacles, right?
- 6:40Dr C: The internal barrier preventing us from slowing down is guilt.
- 6:44Dr C: The irrational belief that our work equals nonstop productivity.
- 6:48Dr C: So overcome this resistance, deploy cognitive reframing.
- 6:53Dr C: Caring for myself is not a withdrawal from others, it is an operational prerequisite.
- 6:59Dr C: Normalizing by saying that out loud.
- 7:07Dr C: For those she loves, leads, and mentors.
- 7:11Dr C: You cannot pour from a cracked, parched cup.
- 7:15Dr C: Third, the happiness legacy metrics.
- 7:19Dr C: This is an advanced application.
- 7:21Dr C: So recently I heard an insightful reflection where someone was asked what they wanted their legacy to be.
- 7:27Dr C: Her response was disarmingly simple.
- 7:30Dr C: Happiness.
- 7:31Dr C: Not an exhaustive list of titles, credentials, or outputs, just sustained joy.
- 7:37Dr C: Evaluate your current calendar.
- 7:39Dr C: Look through this lens.
- 7:41Dr C: Is the pace I am keeping today generating happiness or is it generating exhaustion?
- 7:47Dr C: If your current trajectory feeds cynicism and fixed mindset, it is time to ruthlessly prune low-value obligations and reallocate that energy capital into activities that preserve your livelihood.
- 8:03Dr C: As we step into the evolve pillar, our goal is integrating these insights into our permanent identity.
- 8:09Dr C: The ultimate transformation of mastering emotional and intellectual wellness isn't that you avoid hard work, it's that you stop seeking validation from external benchmarks.
- 8:21Dr C: When you anchor your purpose in genuine human alignment and personal well-being, the fear of missing a target evaporates.
- 8:32Dr C: You begin to recognize possibilities instead of barriers.
- 8:36Dr C: You shift your fixed mindset that says, I'm stuck under this mountain of responsibility, to an empowered growth mind that proclaims I deserve happiness and I have the agency, the power, the autonomy to cultivate it.
- 8:52Dr C: Tomorrow morning, here is your challenge.
- 8:55Dr C: Before you open an inbox, before you grab your phone, before you read a report, before you attend to someone else's crisis, take two minutes to look in the mirror.
- 9:06Dr C: Say directly to yourself, I deserve happiness.
- 9:10Dr C: And today I choose to invest in my wellness.
- 9:14Dr C: Let the declaration dictate how you allocate your time, your boundaries, and most importantly, your energy.
- 9:23Dr C: My friends, remember to pay close attention to the people that pour into you.
- 9:28Dr C: Just like Monica poured into me this week.
- 9:31Dr C: So grateful, Monica.
- 9:32Dr C: Protect those relationships.
- 9:34Dr C: Honor your purpose.
- 9:35Dr C: Remember that taking care of yourself is the foundation for everything you build in this life.
- 9:42Dr C: Prioritize you today.
- 9:44Dr C: Choose what your legacy will be.
- 9:46Dr C: Will it be happiness or will it be cynicism and burnout?
- 9:50Dr C: You deserve joy.
- 9:52Dr C: You deserve rest.
- 9:53Dr C: You deserve a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside.
- 9:59Dr C: So, until next time, keep on learning.
- 10:02Dr C: Stay inspired.
- 10:04Dr C: Continue to flourish and never, ever stop evolving.
- 10:08Dr C: I'm your host, Dr.
- 10:09Dr C: C, and this is the Live Podcast.
