- 1:13Speaker 4: read out my email, I just want to give you
- 1:14Speaker 4: guys a little bit of a content warning. Today's Money
- 1:17Speaker 4: Diary discusses suicide in this episode, and if this is
- 1:20Speaker 4: something that you would like to give a bit of
- 1:22Speaker 4: a skip to feel free.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We have a plethora of other.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Money diaries you can go and listen to, but for
- 1:28Speaker 4: those of you who are going to stick along, be
- 1:30Speaker 4: aware that that is the topic that we are discussing today.
- 1:33Speaker 4: So the email it went like this, Hi, She's on
- 1:37Speaker 4: the Money. Two years ago, my ex and I split
- 1:39Speaker 4: up and then he ended his life. As you can imagine,
- 1:43Speaker 4: this turned everything upside down for me. I had to
- 1:46Speaker 4: stop working and I had no money. But now in
- 1:48Speaker 4: two short years, I'm a homeowner, I'm engaged, and I
- 1:52Speaker 4: have a baby on the way. I'd love to share
- 1:55Speaker 4: my story with the community Money diarist. That sounds like
- 1:59Speaker 4: an absolute rollercoaster.
- 2:01Speaker 2: How are you?
- 2:02Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely a lot better now, but it was definitely
- 2:05Speaker 5: a crazy time in my life and it's taken a
- 2:08Speaker 5: lot to get where I am now. But wouldn't be
- 2:11Speaker 5: here without the help of She's on the Money podcast,
- 2:13Speaker 5: to be honest, it's helped me so much.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Oh that's so sweet.
- 2:17Speaker 4: But also you've got to do a whole heap of
- 2:20Speaker 4: work to have gotten through that, like on your own.
- 2:23Speaker 4: That's actually crazy to have gone through that and then
- 2:26Speaker 4: be kind of on the flip side and kind of
- 2:28Speaker 4: be at the side of things where the light is
- 2:31Speaker 4: actually at the end of the tunnel, and just offline,
- 2:33Speaker 4: I was talking to you about being pregnant. You seem
- 2:36Speaker 4: so glowy and happy about that, and that just makes
- 2:38Speaker 4: my soul like so so happy for you. Let's dive
- 2:42Speaker 4: it straight in money, darist, what grade would you give
- 2:44Speaker 4: your money habits? If I asked you to give your
- 2:46Speaker 4: money habits a grade from A through to.
- 2:48Speaker 6: F, I think I'd be sitting on about a B
- 2:50Speaker 6: at the moment.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I'd be that's not bad.
- 2:53Speaker 4: My favorite question of all time, money Darrest, Can you
- 2:56Speaker 4: tell me a little bit more about your money story?
- 2:58Speaker 5: Yeah, So, I sickly left school in year ten. I
- 3:02Speaker 5: went to tafe for a few years and did a
- 3:04Speaker 5: couple odd jobs for a few years, pretty much living
- 3:08Speaker 5: just paycheck to paycheck, as you kind of do when
- 3:10Speaker 5: you first go out into the world and start working.
- 3:13Speaker 5: I realized quite quickly that that wasn't really the lifestyle
- 3:16Speaker 5: I wanted, so I did a quick Google search of
- 3:19Speaker 5: what was a really high paying job that you could
- 3:21Speaker 5: do from home?
- 3:22Speaker 6: Because I knew I wanted to have a family eventually.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I love that this is what led.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Me to the accounts industry.
- 3:28Speaker 5: So I started my tafe to do my search foreign
- 3:31Speaker 5: accounts then and then quickly got into the industry in
- 3:35Speaker 5: just an entry level job. That job was alright, but
- 3:38Speaker 5: I was quite undervalued and underpaid there unfortunately, so I
- 3:42Speaker 5: quickly job hopped to a few other accounts jobs. This
- 3:47Speaker 5: was mainly working for civil construction companies, so that was
- 3:51Speaker 5: just doing all the book work internally and all budgets
- 3:54Speaker 5: and things like that, which led me to be on
- 3:58Speaker 5: better pays, which was great, which could help me start
- 4:01Speaker 5: to save.
- 4:02Speaker 6: This time is when I got with my ex partner.
- 4:05Speaker 5: We were together for about four years, and we tried
- 4:09Speaker 5: really hard to say for a house, and tried to
- 4:11Speaker 5: do what we could.
- 4:12Speaker 2: How did you guys meet?
- 4:14Speaker 5: We actually met through work, we were actually working together,
- 4:16Speaker 5: and then just kind of fell in and then COVID hit,
- 4:20Speaker 5: and funny enough, it just got to the point where
- 4:22Speaker 5: it's like, well, if we can't see each other, we
- 4:23Speaker 5: may as well live together. So it was kind of
- 4:25Speaker 5: like either move in or don't see each other because
- 4:28Speaker 5: of lockdowns and everything.
- 4:29Speaker 6: So it was very fast.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I feel like everyone did that right.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Everyone was either like, all right, so we either end
- 4:35Speaker 4: it here or we move in.
- 4:36Speaker 2: There's no in between.
- 4:37Speaker 4: I feel like so many of my girlfriends did that,
- 4:39Speaker 4: and it worked out for some and it didn't work
- 4:41Speaker 4: out for others. But I feel like we had our
- 4:42Speaker 4: hands forced really.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Yeah, one hundred percent, But it definitely worked out. We
- 4:47Speaker 5: were very happy for those four years. The thing was,
- 4:51Speaker 5: unfortunately we had a little bit of trouble with money
- 4:55Speaker 5: because our kind of long term personal goals and goals
- 4:58Speaker 5: together just stopped aligning, which unfortunately affected our money goals together.
- 5:04Speaker 5: So instead of wanting to kind of save long term
- 5:09Speaker 5: like me, my partner was a bit more Okay, we've
- 5:12Speaker 5: got money, let's kind of spend it, which caused some issues.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Yeah, there's always one spender and one say that in
- 5:19Speaker 4: a relationship. I find someone's always got to be a
- 5:21Speaker 4: little bit spendy.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:23Speaker 5: It was getting to the point where I was really
- 5:25Speaker 5: struggling because I really wanted to buy a house. I
- 5:27Speaker 5: was set on it for so long, and it was
- 5:29Speaker 5: just becoming a little bit impossible. And then we ended
- 5:32Speaker 5: up having that conversation of does our future kind of
- 5:35Speaker 5: aligne are we still going in the same direction together?
- 5:38Speaker 5: And it's basically when we kind of realized that, Okay,
- 5:41Speaker 5: where we're planning to go in the future is not
- 5:43Speaker 5: really you lining up anymore.
- 5:44Speaker 6: So as much as we still got.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Along and whatnot, we just decided to go our own
- 5:49Speaker 5: separate ways to try and focus on our own goals.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Fair, And that's such a stressful period of time as well,
- 5:54Speaker 4: especially because you lived together, so you've got to kind
- 5:56Speaker 4: of like wind all of that up and move out.
- 5:58Speaker 4: How did that process go?
- 6:00Speaker 6: Yeah, so that was actually quite tricky.
- 6:02Speaker 5: So like basically the money that we did manage to
- 6:04Speaker 5: save together we had to split down the middle.
- 6:07Speaker 6: We had to split up our pets, which was hard
- 6:09Speaker 6: as well.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Oh no, Yeah, so it's like basically everything got split,
- 6:14Speaker 5: and then the money that we did save both ended
- 6:16Speaker 5: up going into deposits for rental properties, getting more furniture
- 6:21Speaker 5: because everything got split.
- 6:22Speaker 6: So basically the.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Savings that we did have pretty much dwindled to nothing
- 6:26Speaker 5: after the split anyway, which was really hard.
- 6:29Speaker 4: I feel like that happens all the time. That's crazy.
- 6:32Speaker 4: And then what happened next? Did you end up being
- 6:34Speaker 4: able to settle down and start saving again after you
- 6:37Speaker 4: set yourself up?
- 6:38Speaker 6: It was kind of really only a small window.
- 6:40Speaker 5: Basically I moved out and I moved into a new house,
- 6:43Speaker 5: and then we were still hanging out, like he was
- 6:46Speaker 5: coming over probably two or three times a week and
- 6:48Speaker 5: bringing the other animal over so the animals could have.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Play dates and stuff.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Cute.
- 6:53Speaker 5: Yeah, and then yeah, basically, probably about four weeks after
- 6:58Speaker 5: I moved into my house, unfortunately, decided to take his life,
- 7:02Speaker 5: which was really difficult.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I'm so sorry. That is literally one of the worst
- 7:07Speaker 2: things that you can go through. Ever. Is that something
- 7:10Speaker 2: that you saw coming.
- 7:12Speaker 5: You did have depression and anxiety for a lot of
- 7:15Speaker 5: years and was on medicine stuff, and it was something
- 7:17Speaker 5: that he dealt with day in, day out, and he
- 7:20Speaker 5: tried his best to stay on top of it. But yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 5: it was definitely a shock and it definitely rocked me.
- 7:26Speaker 5: In his family and everyone close to him can't say
- 7:29Speaker 5: it was expected, but yeah, so that kind of sent
- 7:33Speaker 5: my life into a spiral. So the money that I
- 7:36Speaker 5: did have pretty much all got spent because I pretty
- 7:39Speaker 5: much wasn't able to go to work anymore.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Of course, not that would have sent you for six
- 7:44Speaker 4: It would have been so all consuming and overwhelming. And
- 7:46Speaker 4: I can't say that I can empathize with that situation
- 7:50Speaker 4: because thankfully I haven't been in it. But my god
- 7:52Speaker 4: like I can't even begin to imagine how much that
- 7:55Speaker 4: would essentially throw you completely out of whack with what's
- 7:59Speaker 4: normal and what going on like that would be horrific.
- 8:03Speaker 5: For a couple months, it was just learning to function
- 8:07Speaker 5: day to day again, Like it just felt like all
- 8:09Speaker 5: I did was sleep, watch TV, and like shower. That
- 8:13Speaker 5: was like literally my existence for a long time, trying
- 8:16Speaker 5: to find my feet again, just trying to function day
- 8:18Speaker 5: to day. It was really difficult, but slowly I knew
- 8:22Speaker 5: I needed to go back to work. Got to the
- 8:24Speaker 5: point where I couldn't afford my rent and I was
- 8:26Speaker 5: asking my mom to help me out just so I
- 8:27Speaker 5: wouldn't lose my house.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah wow.
- 8:30Speaker 5: And then I also built up a bit of a
- 8:32Speaker 5: debt with zip pay just to try and pay for
- 8:35Speaker 5: groceries and just the essentials to get by, just because
- 8:39Speaker 5: I wasn't working and I was trying to get by
- 8:41Speaker 5: without a wage coming in.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Yeah, of course, And that's like added stress, Like you're
- 8:47Speaker 4: already stressed, You're already overwhelmed, and then money troubles get
- 8:50Speaker 4: put on top of that. Of course, you ended up
- 8:52Speaker 4: with a Zippay debt, Like, of course you ended up
- 8:54Speaker 4: overwhelmed and having to ask people for money, like that's
- 8:57Speaker 4: so unfair.
- 8:58Speaker 2: It feels like one thing after an Yeah, which.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Definitely sent things into a bit of a downread spiral.
- 9:04Speaker 5: So I was struggling quite a lot trying to find
- 9:06Speaker 5: my feet again. So I started going back to work
- 9:08Speaker 5: a couple of hours a day just to try and
- 9:10Speaker 5: get a bit of money coming in again, just so
- 9:12Speaker 5: I could try and figure it out and try and
- 9:14Speaker 5: get on top of things.
- 9:15Speaker 6: And I remember I was having.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Probably the worst week I had had unfortunately with losing someone.
- 9:22Speaker 5: After you have your funeral and everything else, the check
- 9:25Speaker 5: ins kind of stop a lot, and.
- 9:27Speaker 6: People don't talk about that a whole heap.
- 9:30Speaker 5: So I found a kind of after that kind of
- 9:33Speaker 5: period was when I really struggled, and I wasn't really
- 9:36Speaker 5: getting much check in from many people besides like my
- 9:39Speaker 5: immediate family.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Yeah, that's something that is so important. I feel like
- 9:43Speaker 4: so many people they make you lasagn years and they
- 9:45Speaker 4: bring dinner over in the first week, and they're checking
- 9:48Speaker 4: in and asking if you're okay, and you know, it's
- 9:50Speaker 4: all tumultuous, and then there's the funeral and maybe awake,
- 9:54Speaker 4: and then you know, the week after people are asking
- 9:56Speaker 4: how you are, and then all of a sudden it
- 9:58Speaker 4: dries up and then you're on your and that is,
- 10:02Speaker 4: I would say, one of the hardest parts. And that
- 10:04Speaker 4: happens a lot, like you don't need I don't know
- 10:08Speaker 4: if you're the same, but one of my girlfriends went
- 10:10Speaker 4: through this and she's like, I just don't.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Need another lasagna.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I just need someone to call me and ask me
- 10:14Speaker 4: to come out for a walk or go for a coffee.
- 10:16Speaker 4: The month after. I don't, you know, need the dinners.
- 10:19Speaker 4: She's like, I can't even eat at the moment, but
- 10:20Speaker 4: I do want the walk. And it's so important to
- 10:23Speaker 4: just be that friend that's there, you know, pest your
- 10:25Speaker 4: friends in those situations, ask them consistently. I feel like
- 10:29Speaker 4: so many times we assume, oh my gosh, maybe they
- 10:31Speaker 4: want some space, and they'll let you know if they
- 10:33Speaker 4: want space.
- 10:34Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, I can one hundred percent agree with all
- 10:37Speaker 5: of that.
- 10:38Speaker 6: That is all one hundred percent true. Yeah.
- 10:40Speaker 5: So I was kind of at that point where I
- 10:42Speaker 5: was probably having the worst week I had had. I
- 10:45Speaker 5: got to the point where I literally hadn't showered in
- 10:49Speaker 5: three days and I was just sat on the couch.
- 10:51Speaker 5: I was ready to give up my dog because I
- 10:54Speaker 5: just felt like I wasn't taking care of her properly,
- 10:56Speaker 5: which was really difficult, Like I love my dog so much.
- 11:00Speaker 6: That's when I knew something was kind of not really okay.
- 11:04Speaker 5: And then it just so happened that I had some
- 11:06Speaker 5: trades have to come to the house to install an
- 11:10Speaker 5: air con in the unit that I was in, and
- 11:13Speaker 5: the person I had been dating back in year seven
- 11:17Speaker 5: well through my front door to install an air con
- 11:20Speaker 5: when I was sitting on my couch in my pajamas,
- 11:23Speaker 5: hadn't showered for three days and just not in a
- 11:26Speaker 5: good state at all.
- 11:28Speaker 4: No, and You're like, I don't even want trades here,
- 11:30Speaker 4: but get it done. I need the air con one
- 11:33Speaker 4: hundred percent.
- 11:33Speaker 5: And then for it to be someone I knew that
- 11:35Speaker 5: walked through that door, it was quite hard to deal
- 11:37Speaker 5: with and it was very confronting, but he had been
- 11:40Speaker 5: someone who had actually checked in on me a couple
- 11:42Speaker 5: times and sent a couple of messages to see how
- 11:45Speaker 5: I was tracking and if I was okay. So he
- 11:47Speaker 5: came in and kind of just sat on the floor
- 11:49Speaker 5: and had a good talk to me and said, like
- 11:51Speaker 5: if I need anything that He actually just lived.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Up the road so oh, that's so sweet.
- 11:55Speaker 5: If I just wanted some company or to get out
- 11:57Speaker 5: of the house, that I could go down and see,
- 12:00Speaker 5: which was great. From there, we ended up hanging out
- 12:03Speaker 5: a little bit and I got back into a bit
- 12:06Speaker 5: more of a routine with work, which was fantastic and
- 12:09Speaker 5: kind of From there, me and the guy had actually
- 12:13Speaker 5: dated in primary school. We ended up forming a close
- 12:16Speaker 5: connection and ended up being in a relationship.
- 12:19Speaker 4: From there, Oh my gosh, how cute is that. I
- 12:21Speaker 4: don't know about you, but I'm a little bit hippie
- 12:23Speaker 4: dippy like I do believe that things happen for a reason,
- 12:26Speaker 4: and I feel like he was meant to walk through
- 12:28Speaker 4: the door, and that there was a reason he came
- 12:30Speaker 4: into your life at the time that you clearly needed him.
- 12:33Speaker 6: Yep.
- 12:34Speaker 5: And my mom says the exact same thing, because I
- 12:36Speaker 5: remember I struggled for a little bit thinking about it
- 12:40Speaker 5: being in another relationship again, and I remember crying to
- 12:43Speaker 5: my mum saying I was stressed about it, and she
- 12:46Speaker 5: said that you know, things and people come into your
- 12:48Speaker 5: life when they do to try and help you and
- 12:50Speaker 5: to heal you. And I couldn't agree with that more.
- 12:53Speaker 5: That was exactly what I needed.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it gives me groop bumps.
- 12:56Speaker 4: I'm like, ah, like it was meant to be, Like
- 12:58Speaker 4: it's really really beautiful. Feel like there's someone on the
- 13:01Speaker 4: other side going like, this is meant to happen for you,
- 13:04Speaker 4: and it's meant to be you know, the right situation
- 13:07Speaker 4: at the right time, and clearly you needed it.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So I adore that so much. So tell me more,
- 13:11Speaker 2: what's life like now?
- 13:13Speaker 5: Yeah, So once we kind of got together, things started
- 13:17Speaker 5: to go forward for me really well, and I got
- 13:19Speaker 5: back into my studies.
- 13:20Speaker 6: So I ended up finishing my Diploma of accounts.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Oh congrats, queen, How good is that?
- 13:27Speaker 6: Thanks? Yeah, really good.
- 13:28Speaker 5: So that was very exciting and it kind of gag
- 13:30Speaker 5: me that motivation to keep going with my career and
- 13:33Speaker 5: kind of get back on track again.
- 13:35Speaker 6: And then I went to a new job.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Within the first six months, I was able to get
- 13:39Speaker 5: three pay rises.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Of course, you were, oh, my gosh, how good is that?
- 13:44Speaker 5: Yeah, it was pretty insane that We're just very happy
- 13:47Speaker 5: with the work I was able to produce and within
- 13:50Speaker 5: the timeframe that I'd been there and learning the business
- 13:53Speaker 5: and stuff. So yeah, that made a huge difference to
- 13:55Speaker 5: my financial situation.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Yeah, of course, and it would feel good as well
- 13:59Speaker 4: to go like, actually, do have this. I am on
- 14:01Speaker 4: the right track, I'm doing really well.
- 14:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 14:04Speaker 5: So then that's when I kind of started picking back
- 14:06Speaker 5: up on listening to Cheese on the Money again and
- 14:09Speaker 5: taking in the content.
- 14:10Speaker 6: And then that's when.
- 14:11Speaker 5: I paid down all my zip pay debt and got
- 14:14Speaker 5: rid of that one, and yeah, just started trying to
- 14:17Speaker 5: budget better and get on track, just so I wouldn't
- 14:19Speaker 5: end up in the situation that I was in before
- 14:22Speaker 5: where I just had no money and couldn't function. So
- 14:24Speaker 5: I started building up an emergency fund all of the things.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Yeah, Oh my gosh, I feel like I'm just so
- 14:30Speaker 4: proud of you, even though we've never met, that you're
- 14:32Speaker 4: back on track and you're back listening to the pod.
- 14:35Speaker 2: So welcome back, friend. We always love having you here.
- 14:38Speaker 2: But where are you now? I feel like there's so
- 14:41Speaker 2: much that has changed. And in your story you said
- 14:44Speaker 2: I'm now engaged. When did you get engaged? That's so exciting.
- 14:48Speaker 6: About a month ago? Roughly?
- 14:50Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, so like super super fresh.
- 14:52Speaker 6: Super fresh, very fresh.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, that is literally the best.
- 14:56Speaker 4: And you have a baby on the way. I can't
- 14:58Speaker 4: think of a better combo. Are you living on a
- 15:01Speaker 4: high right now? Because I feel like I would be yes.
- 15:04Speaker 6: Very much on a high.
- 15:05Speaker 5: And then we've just moved into our first family home
- 15:08Speaker 5: together as well, and I also passed my business diploma,
- 15:12Speaker 5: so it's all happening in the past couple of months.
- 15:14Speaker 6: Who are you?
- 15:16Speaker 2: She's a queen. I love this so much. Oh my gosh.
- 15:20Speaker 4: So life is definitely looking up, and it's not looking
- 15:23Speaker 4: a lot like it used to.
- 15:24Speaker 6: Yes, one hundred percent.
- 15:26Speaker 5: And that's what I can't reiterate enough, Like, there's definitely
- 15:29Speaker 5: tough times, and you can fall into a pit and
- 15:31Speaker 5: things can be horrible, but you've got things to look
- 15:34Speaker 5: forward to as well. Lack can change so fast and
- 15:38Speaker 5: you're just gotta stick it out sometimes and get through
- 15:40Speaker 5: that tough bit and then there's always things to look
- 15:43Speaker 5: forward to.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like you've got to go through the
- 15:46Speaker 4: hard times to really really appreciate the good times too.
- 15:50Speaker 4: But if we step back a little bit, because I
- 15:51Speaker 4: feel like some of these things, unfortunately could happen to
- 15:55Speaker 4: other people in our community. When you were sitting on
- 15:58Speaker 4: the couch and you hadn't showered for three and you
- 16:00Speaker 4: were just essentially a mess. Would you have believed someone
- 16:05Speaker 4: if they'd sat you down and said, look, money, dice,
- 16:07Speaker 4: this is what life is going to look like in
- 16:09Speaker 4: just two short years.
- 16:11Speaker 5: No, no, wait, I would have said they were lying
- 16:14Speaker 5: through every inch of their body, Like, there's no way
- 16:17Speaker 5: I would have believed any of it.
- 16:19Speaker 4: And I feel like that's the best part, right, Like,
- 16:21Speaker 4: I feel like so many of us we go through
- 16:23Speaker 4: dark times and you just think this is never gonna
- 16:26Speaker 4: get better, this is never gonna change. And don't get
- 16:28Speaker 4: me wrong, I don't think someone in a really dark
- 16:31Speaker 4: situation can just jump up off the couch and.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Be like, it's gonna get better. This is the best part.
- 16:35Speaker 4: But I think sometimes we have to embrace the terrible
- 16:38Speaker 4: parts to go through that to come out the other
- 16:41Speaker 4: side and go Actually, you can't have the sunshine without
- 16:44Speaker 4: a little bit of rain, yep, And it.
- 16:46Speaker 5: Gives you a massive appreciation for those good things as well,
- 16:50Speaker 5: Like the good things just feel a thousand times better now.
- 16:53Speaker 4: I love that so much. All right, I've got so
- 16:55Speaker 4: many questions for you. Can we dive into more questions? Yes,
- 16:58Speaker 4: of course, I love it all right. So you mentioned
- 17:00Speaker 4: you'd graduated and you passed your diploma. So I want
- 17:03Speaker 4: to know what do you currently do for work and
- 17:05Speaker 4: how much money do you earn?
- 17:07Speaker 5: So I do accounts for a relining business and I
- 17:11Speaker 5: earn about ninety k a year currently.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Oh, very nice.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Ninety k year plus or including Super without Super.
- 17:19Speaker 2: So you've got Super on top of that. That is
- 17:21Speaker 2: very very sexy.
- 17:23Speaker 4: And can we just remind people that you're on ninety
- 17:26Speaker 4: plus Super and you didn't finish year eleven and twelve.
- 17:29Speaker 2: You dropped out in year ten?
- 17:30Speaker 6: Correct?
- 17:31Speaker 2: That is so slay.
- 17:33Speaker 4: I love this for you so much. Next question I've
- 17:36Speaker 4: got for you, what's your big money goal? What are
- 17:38Speaker 4: you currently working towards. You just moved into your first
- 17:41Speaker 4: family home, which is super exciting, but what's on the horizon.
- 17:44Speaker 5: So we're basically trying to save for a wedding and
- 17:47Speaker 5: the rest of our baby stuff.
- 17:48Speaker 4: At the moment, our baby stuff is so expensive it
- 17:51Speaker 4: all adds up.
- 17:52Speaker 6: Yep.
- 17:53Speaker 5: So we've got our major ticket items, but now it's
- 17:55Speaker 5: just slowly saving up for kind of the rest of
- 17:57Speaker 5: the stuff to make sure we have everything before bub
- 17:59Speaker 5: get here and then yeah, for the wedding is the
- 18:02Speaker 5: next thing.
- 18:03Speaker 4: How did you approach baby stuff, because when I was pregnant,
- 18:06Speaker 4: I was like, am I too early to be buying cots?
- 18:10Speaker 4: At what point should I be buying a cot? When
- 18:12Speaker 4: should I be setting up the nursery? And if we're
- 18:14Speaker 4: really honest, my nursery is still not finished and my
- 18:16Speaker 4: baby's eleven weeks old.
- 18:18Speaker 2: So how did you go about that?
- 18:21Speaker 6: Did you just.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Start getting things the second you found out you were
- 18:23Speaker 4: pregnant or was it something that you've only just sorted out.
- 18:26Speaker 6: It was a little bit of both.
- 18:27Speaker 5: Because me and my partner when we got together, we
- 18:30Speaker 5: pretty much decided to combine our finances straight away, and
- 18:33Speaker 5: we just had it set up that there's not a
- 18:37Speaker 5: his online wage, it's a US wage, so.
- 18:40Speaker 6: Everything is just all combined.
- 18:42Speaker 5: And then so we had our savings goals together, so
- 18:45Speaker 5: we knew exactly what we wanted. So we'd been saving
- 18:48Speaker 5: to have this baby for quite a long time, so
- 18:50Speaker 5: we were quite prepared. So we had lots of money
- 18:53Speaker 5: kind of sitting there ready to get all the baby stuff.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Oh I love that, So you're just ready to hit go.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Yeah, So we basically waited and so we moved into
- 19:00Speaker 5: the house and then went to purchase all that stuff.
- 19:03Speaker 6: But we had the money ready to go, which was
- 19:04Speaker 6: so helpful.
- 19:05Speaker 4: What's been the biggest surprise when it comes to finances
- 19:08Speaker 4: and babies? What's I guess surprised you about being pregnant
- 19:12Speaker 4: and having to fund this tiny human being.
- 19:15Speaker 6: Doctor's appointments There's so many.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Of them, Yes, and they're expensive. Are you paying out
- 19:20Speaker 4: of pocket for ultrasounds too?
- 19:23Speaker 1: Yes?
- 19:23Speaker 6: So out of pocket?
- 19:24Speaker 5: And then if you throw in as well, I had
- 19:27Speaker 5: a history of leakemia when I was little.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's like there's a normal doctor's appointments and
- 19:33Speaker 5: then there's all that on top of it as well.
- 19:35Speaker 5: To make sure my heart's functioning correct is just so much.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 19:40Speaker 4: So that's not only the expense, that's also a lot
- 19:43Speaker 4: of time. All right, let's go to a really quick
- 19:46Speaker 4: break on the flip side. I want to talk about debt,
- 19:48Speaker 4: investments and good and bad money habits, So guys don't
- 19:51Speaker 4: go anywhere, all.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Right, money dis we are back.
- 19:57Speaker 4: I feel like I have learnt so much about and
- 20:00Speaker 4: you are just like this epic, stoic but also very shiny,
- 20:04Speaker 4: happy person. I can't wait to share more of you
- 20:06Speaker 4: with our community. So I want to know. Do you
- 20:09Speaker 4: have any investments, If so, what are they? If not,
- 20:11Speaker 4: what are the plans.
- 20:13Speaker 5: Basically, I've got my super which is sitting at about
- 20:17Speaker 5: forty five nearly fifty k now.
- 20:19Speaker 6: Which is great.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Oh, that's fantastic.
- 20:22Speaker 5: And then we've only just started investing in shares in
- 20:25Speaker 5: the past two weeks.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Actually, oh my god, she's doing everything in the last
- 20:29Speaker 4: couple of weeks. Shares investments. You are engaged, you're having
- 20:33Speaker 4: a baby. What haven't you done in the last few weeks.
- 20:37Speaker 6: It doesn't feel like a whole heap, to be honest.
- 20:40Speaker 4: How did you pull the trigger to invest in shares?
- 20:43Speaker 4: How did you end up doing that?
- 20:44Speaker 5: Well, so, I'd done it a couple of years ago,
- 20:47Speaker 5: but I didn't like how volatile it felt and like
- 20:50Speaker 5: spending money on fees, which I didn't like. So I
- 20:52Speaker 5: kind of withdrew it all and then put it back
- 20:54Speaker 5: into like kind of a longer term savings account. But
- 20:58Speaker 5: the more I've listened to the podcast, it's kind of
- 21:00Speaker 5: been talking about shares and investing in how it can
- 21:03Speaker 5: be beneficial. So we've decided to just bite the bullet
- 21:06Speaker 5: and put that money back into shares account and just
- 21:09Speaker 5: see how it goes for the next couple months and
- 21:11Speaker 5: just wait and see.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I love this so much and maybe we can ride
- 21:15Speaker 4: out a bit more of that volatility. But it can
- 21:18Speaker 4: feel really scary at the time, right especially when you're
- 21:21Speaker 4: saying that you invested a couple of years ago that
- 21:23Speaker 4: would have been in a relatively tumultuous time in the market.
- 21:26Speaker 4: So I can imagine feeling a bit ikey, especially if
- 21:29Speaker 4: that was the first time.
- 21:31Speaker 6: Yep.
- 21:32Speaker 4: One out of ten do not recommend when in doubt, guys,
- 21:35Speaker 4: definitely zoom out. Let's talk a little bit about debt.
- 21:38Speaker 4: You mentioned before you got into some zip pay debt
- 21:41Speaker 4: and then you got out of it. Do you have
- 21:43Speaker 4: any debts currently? If so, what are they? If not,
- 21:46Speaker 4: how are we staying out of debt?
- 21:48Speaker 5: So I managed to pay off the Zippay and the
- 21:50Speaker 5: other debts I had from the time when I lost
- 21:53Speaker 5: my ex, which was fantastic, So we got out of
- 21:55Speaker 5: all of that.
- 21:56Speaker 6: Only debt we have currently is we've just purchased a
- 22:00Speaker 6: new family car yep.
- 22:02Speaker 5: So that cost us about thirteen grand, but we've already
- 22:06Speaker 5: brought that down to ten grand.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Now are we Oh my gosh, who are you? You're
- 22:10Speaker 2: smashing that down.
- 22:11Speaker 5: And then my partner also had a motorbike loan he
- 22:15Speaker 5: got a couple of years ago, which was unfortunately in
- 22:18Speaker 5: a loan account, which we weren't able to pay extra to.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Oh isn't that annoying because you're so ready to smash
- 22:24Speaker 4: it down and then you feel trapped by it.
- 22:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:27Speaker 5: So basically what we did we got a another loan
- 22:30Speaker 5: from somewhere else, paid that in full, and now we
- 22:33Speaker 5: can make extra payments on the loan that we've got.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Now that's smart. Then you're going to get out of
- 22:40Speaker 4: debt quicker. I love that for you guys.
- 22:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:42Speaker 5: So basically, by the time babies here, we should have
- 22:46Speaker 5: both of those debts squared and then all we have
- 22:48Speaker 5: to pay is our mortgage.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Oh very very cool. All right, you sound like you've
- 22:53Speaker 4: got your head screwed on. So I want to know
- 22:55Speaker 4: what is your best money habit.
- 22:57Speaker 6: I would have to say budgeting.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Accounts, So that makes sense. I feel like you should
- 23:02Speaker 2: be good at that, right.
- 23:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:05Speaker 5: So I've just got like a little basic spreadsheet that
- 23:07Speaker 5: just has our income, what we spend on a regular basis,
- 23:11Speaker 5: and then what we want to put away in saving.
- 23:13Speaker 5: So basically, each week, it's just we put money for
- 23:17Speaker 5: our internet, water, everything else. We know that set amount
- 23:20Speaker 5: that we have to move each week for all those
- 23:22Speaker 5: direct edits to come out.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:24Speaker 6: And then same kind of thing with the savings.
- 23:25Speaker 5: It's a set amount each week that moves out and
- 23:28Speaker 5: then by the end of the week we're down to
- 23:29Speaker 5: about you know, ten or zero dollars, but all the
- 23:32Speaker 5: money's been dispersed how it should.
- 23:34Speaker 4: So did you learn this through going to school and
- 23:38Speaker 4: doing TAFE and stuff like that and doing your accounts
- 23:41Speaker 4: or is this something that you've always just been really
- 23:43Speaker 4: good at.
- 23:44Speaker 6: I think it's a little bit of a mix of both.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Like I was always not too bad at it, but
- 23:48Speaker 5: going to tape definitely kind of cemented in exactly how
- 23:52Speaker 5: to do it and the importance of it rather than
- 23:55Speaker 5: just spending just because you've got it.
- 23:57Speaker 4: I love And if someone is listing and they're like,
- 23:59Speaker 4: I don't have a budget, budgets feel overwhelming, like I
- 24:03Speaker 4: just don't want to do it.
- 24:04Speaker 2: What would your advice be?
- 24:05Speaker 6: It is genuinely a lifesaver.
- 24:08Speaker 5: Just give it a go, even if you start out
- 24:10Speaker 5: with like a non strict budget at the start, give
- 24:14Speaker 5: yourself a fair whack of spending money and then just
- 24:16Speaker 5: see if you can stick to that amount. My probably
- 24:19Speaker 5: worst habit used to be going out and that kind
- 24:22Speaker 5: of like fomo.
- 24:23Speaker 6: So yeah, just give yourself a bit of leeway at
- 24:26Speaker 6: the start.
- 24:26Speaker 5: And then slowly try and creep it in, and then
- 24:28Speaker 5: if you can't afford to do it that week, do
- 24:30Speaker 5: it the following week when you get paid again, Like, yeah.
- 24:33Speaker 4: That's fair because there's a cash flow, it keeps coming
- 24:36Speaker 4: in over time. I feel like so many times we
- 24:38Speaker 4: think we're really restricting ourselves when the reality is like,
- 24:42Speaker 4: if you really want something, it might just be not
- 24:44Speaker 4: right now, and we can have it in the future.
- 24:46Speaker 4: We just need to be better at long term gratification.
- 24:49Speaker 5: I feel definitely having set exactly where you want to
- 24:53Speaker 5: be going in life with your personal goals helps to.
- 24:56Speaker 6: Achieve a good budget.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Like, we knew we wanted kids, so putting my away
- 25:00Speaker 5: four kids was something that was important to us. So
- 25:02Speaker 5: if that meant we couldn't get takeaway two nights a
- 25:04Speaker 5: week to afford that, that was a sacrifice we were
- 25:07Speaker 5: willing to make.
- 25:08Speaker 4: I love that, and I love that it sounds like
- 25:10Speaker 4: you and your partner have just gotten on the same
- 25:12Speaker 4: page really quickly.
- 25:13Speaker 2: You've gone, you know what, this is what we want.
- 25:14Speaker 2: This is the life we're creating.
- 25:16Speaker 4: And not only do we want this, we're actively going
- 25:18Speaker 4: to work towards it and just get it done.
- 25:20Speaker 2: That literally is the best.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Yeah, And it was instant, and it stayed like that
- 25:25Speaker 5: this whole time, and that's why it's been such a
- 25:27Speaker 5: cruisy and amazing relationship. We've just been on the same
- 25:30Speaker 5: page and it's just not changed and it's just fantastic.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Oh good, I love this all right.
- 25:36Speaker 4: You mentioned before that your worst money habit used to
- 25:39Speaker 4: be going out and fomo, but what is it now?
- 25:42Speaker 6: It's still probably a little bit of the same.
- 25:44Speaker 5: I've tried to get better with it by actually getting
- 25:47Speaker 5: rid of Snapchat and Instagram. That was kind of the
- 25:50Speaker 5: worst catalyst for me, because it would be like I'd
- 25:52Speaker 5: see my friends going out to the pub or getting
- 25:54Speaker 5: a cocktail or going out for dinner, and then I
- 25:57Speaker 5: was like, oh, well, I kind of want to go
- 25:58Speaker 5: do that too. Now because I don't see that happening
- 26:01Speaker 5: all the time like I used to. I don't really
- 26:03Speaker 5: get that feeling so much anymore, and I'm quite content
- 26:06Speaker 5: just kind of being at home and eating food at home.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that.
- 26:11Speaker 4: I feel like sometimes we have to like turn our
- 26:14Speaker 4: stuff off so that we can focus on ourselves or
- 26:17Speaker 4: focus on our own goals.
- 26:18Speaker 2: I've done that a lot recently.
- 26:20Speaker 4: I haven't unfollowed heaps of people, but I have definitely
- 26:23Speaker 4: muted a few that I'm feeling like influenced me too
- 26:27Speaker 4: much to spend. So I'm like, no, like, I'll go
- 26:29Speaker 4: check your stories if I'm thinking about it, But sometimes
- 26:32Speaker 4: it would pop up and then I would just go
- 26:34Speaker 4: straight into purchase mode and I just needed to separate
- 26:37Speaker 4: myself from that, and that has been brilliant. Like I
- 26:40Speaker 4: feel like I'm spending less. My mental health is better
- 26:43Speaker 4: because I'm not always feeling like I'm missing out.
- 26:46Speaker 2: I think it's a genius thing to do. And it's free.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Yeah, literally doesn't cost a cent.
- 26:51Speaker 2: In fact, it's going to save you money. Yep, money, diarist.
- 26:56Speaker 4: I feel like I have learned so much about you
- 26:59Speaker 4: and this story is incredible, Like it breaks my heart
- 27:02Speaker 4: to know what you've been through, but it also sets
- 27:05Speaker 4: my soul on fire to know where you're at today,
- 27:07Speaker 4: Like knowing that you're going to welcome a baby into
- 27:09Speaker 4: the world. Really soon, and now you're a homeowner and
- 27:12Speaker 4: you've found the love of your life. Like, I'm just
- 27:15Speaker 4: so overwhelmingly excited for you. But at the start of
- 27:18Speaker 4: this episode you said, v I think I'm a Bee,
- 27:21Speaker 4: But then you've gone through and told me that you're
- 27:23Speaker 4: a homeowner. You've just gotten engaged, like you've already planned
- 27:26Speaker 4: for a baby, like budgeting your best habit, You've got
- 27:29Speaker 4: a heap in super like you've got this epic job
- 27:32Speaker 4: despite not having finished year eleven and twelve? One do
- 27:35Speaker 4: you think you're still a Bee? And then two what
- 27:38Speaker 4: would it take to get to that?
- 27:39Speaker 2: A plus for you?
- 27:41Speaker 6: I do kind of feel like I'm still a Bee
- 27:43Speaker 6: at the moment.
- 27:44Speaker 5: I would like to get better with my investing to
- 27:47Speaker 5: feel like I can kind of creep up into that
- 27:49Speaker 5: next level. And then yeah, because we're looking at dropping
- 27:54Speaker 5: out hours for a better work life balance, that's going
- 27:58Speaker 5: to take a lot of rebudgeting and figure things out.
- 28:00Speaker 5: So I think once we've got that on track, then
- 28:03Speaker 5: I may be able to jump up to that next class.
- 28:05Speaker 4: I feel like you're on the way, though, So that's
- 28:07Speaker 4: not anything you have to change, it's just time frames
- 28:10Speaker 4: and working towards it.
- 28:12Speaker 2: I love that.
- 28:13Speaker 4: That means that you're going to be an A plus
- 28:14Speaker 4: in absolutely no time.
- 28:17Speaker 6: I'm hoping so I know.
- 28:18Speaker 2: So money, Daris, thank you so much.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Unfortunately that is all we have time for today, but
- 28:24Speaker 4: I really appreciate it. I cannot tell you how excited
- 28:27Speaker 4: I am to share your story with the community and
- 28:29Speaker 4: how many people it's going to positively impact.
- 28:32Speaker 2: So thank you so much.
- 28:33Speaker 6: Thank you so much for your time.
