- 0:00Do you ever notice that most Parkinson's life hacks sound
- 0:04like they were written by somebody who's never actually
- 0:07had Parkinson's? You know, they'll say things
- 0:10like just get plenty of rest. Oh perfect.
- 0:13Why didn't I think of that, right?
- 0:15Or stay stress free. Sure, let me just unplug the
- 0:20part of my brain that makes the dopamine and I'll get right on
- 0:23that. So today I'm not giving you the
- 0:26fluffy stuff. I'm going to share real survival
- 0:29moves, things that I've learned, tried, or stolen from brilliant
- 0:33people in our community that actually help when life gets
- 0:35hard. These are the hacks that you
- 0:37won't find on Google and make sure you stick around to the
- 0:40very end because Carmen has a brand new care partner segment.
- 0:43Plus I've got one of my favorite racisms that might just change
- 0:46the way you think about survival.
- 0:49Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 0:53and the Reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 0:57community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 1:01Hey everyone, welcome back to Living with Parkinson's, the
- 1:04good, the bad, and the reality. Now, if you're new here, I'm
- 1:07Bryce and I was diagnosed with Parkinson's over 15 years ago.
- 1:11And let's just say that the reality part of the title, it's
- 1:15home Now. This channel is about living
- 1:18real life with Parkinson's, not the brochure version.
- 1:21We talk about what's hard, what's hilarious, and what
- 1:24actually helps. So if you're into that kind of
- 1:27real talk, hit that subscribe button.
- 1:29It's totally free. It helps our community grow, and
- 1:31it tells YouTube that Parkinson's voices matter.
- 1:35All right, let's get into some survival moves, some tactics and
- 1:39survival hacks. OK, so here's the first one, the
- 1:43pre apology strategy. You know, sometimes you know
- 1:47it's coming, right? A tremor, stiffness, a freeze,
- 1:51or that lag before your meds kick in.
- 1:53So I'll be Parkinson's to the punch by announcing it.
- 1:57If I'm out somewhere, I'll say, all right, folks, meds haven't
- 2:00kicked in yet. So if you so if it looks like
- 2:02I'm buffering, just give me a second.
- 2:05It gets a laugh, it drops attention, and most importantly,
- 2:08it puts me in control. Now, there's some science behind
- 2:12this. You know what?
- 2:13When you use humor, you literally reset the emotional
- 2:17tone in the room. You lower you lower cortisol,
- 2:21the stress hormone in yourself and others.
- 2:25Interesting, right? It's like I always think about
- 2:27laughing and making jokes and releasing dopamine, right?
- 2:31But it actually lowers cortisol as well.
- 2:33And that's the stress hormone in your hormone in yourself and in
- 2:37others. So why don't you try that this
- 2:39week? One small pre apology moment and
- 2:42then comment below how people reacted.
- 2:44I'll bet it surprises you. Really.
- 2:47All right, that one's about controlling the vibe, but the
- 2:52next one's about controlling your brain fog.
- 2:56So when your brain is fried from fatigue or dopamine dips, even
- 3:00simple decisions feel like calculus.
- 3:04So here's what I do. I call it the outsource the
- 3:06overthinking. Outsource the overthinking.
- 3:09I keep a note on my phone that says when in doubt, do the easy
- 3:13thing. And under it, I've got options.
- 3:16If I don't know what to eat, make toast.
- 3:20If I don't know what to do, take a walk.
- 3:23If I can't focus, reset the playlist that's in my notes.
- 3:28Now. It sounds silly, but it saves
- 3:30energy. Because with Parkinson's,
- 3:33decision fatigue is real. Every choice burns dopamine.
- 3:39And guess what? There's science behind that.
- 3:42I mean, I went to school for this one, right?
- 3:44I, I mean, I did some nice research.
- 3:45Anyway, the prefrontal cortex, right?
- 3:48That's the part of your brain that makes decisions, depends on
- 3:51dopamine to function smoothly. So the fewer choices you make,
- 3:55the more energy you save for things that matter.
- 3:58Wow, crazy. Hey, comment below.
- 4:01Did you know that? Did you know that that's what it
- 4:04does? And could you imagine?
- 4:06The less decisions you make, right, the more energy you save.
- 4:10Interesting. So comment below one decision
- 4:13that you could pre decide for the fewer future self.
- 4:16Let's Crowdsource some smart laziness.
- 4:19All right? OK, now let's talk about
- 4:22something that I call the dopamine doppelganger
- 4:27doppelganger. The dopamine doppelganger, OK?
- 4:30We're all great at giving advice to other people, aren't we?
- 4:33We're terrible at giving it to ourselves.
- 4:36So when I'm stuck, I'll ask what would I tell my best friend if
- 4:40they were in my shoes? And then I follow that advice
- 4:44now. It short circuits self doubt and
- 4:46it builds self compassion in real time.
- 4:49So it's amazing how we'll give great advice to friends but not
- 4:53give ourselves that advice. So again, when I when I'm not
- 4:56sure, make sure that you give yourself the same advice you'd
- 5:00give your best friend. And that's a big one.
- 5:03So this week, when your brain starts spiraling, pause and ask
- 5:06yourself, what would I tell somebody else right now?
- 5:11And then actually do it. Tell yourself and then do it.
- 5:15OK, it's time to bring in some rhythm.
- 5:17And I mean literally bring in some rhythm.
- 5:21The Parkinson's playlist rule, that's my next one.
- 5:24I've got 3 playlists, one for when I'm slow, one for when I
- 5:28need to boost, and one when I'm mentally fried.
- 5:31It's like a remote control for my brain.
- 5:34And there is some science behind this too, that most music
- 5:37activates multiple areas of the brain, including the motor
- 5:40cortex. And that's why rhythm helps with
- 5:43walking, movement and even speech.
- 5:45You know, sometimes I shuffle, sometimes my place little
- 5:49playlist does too. All right in the comments, drop
- 5:53one song that always lifts your mood.
- 5:55Let's build community. Let's build a community
- 5:57playlist. The first Parkinson's dopamine
- 6:00mix. How about that?
- 6:01The Parkins dopamine mix. So what's that?
- 6:04What's that one one song that gets you going, gets you pumped
- 6:07up. What's your jam?
- 6:09OK, now let's talk about something that you might not
- 6:12expect. I call this one a strategic
- 6:14surrender. That's when Parkinson wins
- 6:17around. And I stop fighting it.
- 6:21If my fingers won't cooperate, I change the task.
- 6:24If my speech is off, I type instead.
- 6:27It's not giving up. It's pivoting.
- 6:30And why does this work? It works because it keeps
- 6:33frustration from hijacking your nervous system.
- 6:36Once stress spikes, symptoms actually get worse, so switching
- 6:40gears protects your calm and your coordination.
- 6:43You know what sometimes the best move is?
- 6:46Calling a timeout before Parkinson's throws the flag.
- 6:50How do you like that? Comment below. 1 situation where
- 6:53you could strategically surrender.
- 6:55It's not defeat, it's a dopamine preservation.
- 6:59OK, now before we jump into Carmen's care partner corner, I
- 7:03want to share something brand new, a moment for everyone
- 7:06watching who's navigating Parkinson's solo.
- 7:11I'm calling this like your solo, your solo power move.
- 7:15So if you're living with Parkinson's on your own, you're
- 7:17not forgotten here. You're part of the family, and I
- 7:19never want you to feel you're not.
- 7:21So here's something I've learned from so many people that are
- 7:24navigating Parkinson's solo by themselves.
- 7:27Your best survival move is building a connection circuit.
- 7:31Now that means scheduling short check insurance, not for
- 7:34emergencies, just for belonging. Could be with a neighbor, could
- 7:38be with a friend, could be with your partner.
- 7:40Doesn't matter. Or even joining the inner circle
- 7:43because connection isn't just emotional, it's neurological.
- 7:47You know, social interaction boosts, boosts oxygen and
- 7:51dopamine both. And those both help regulate
- 7:54mood and movement. So you might live alone, but
- 7:58you're never doing Parkinson's alone.
- 8:01And you know what, it's exciting.
- 8:02Like we are just going to start a brand new in our inner circle.
- 8:05There's a group in the inner circle, We'll call it, I'm
- 8:08calling the circle solo circle solo chat group.
- 8:11And it's a space made just for you.
- 8:12So if you're navigating Parkinson's solo and you want to
- 8:15not do it alone, check out the inner circle.
- 8:18The link's in the description below.
- 8:19And check out when you get inside, you can go see.
- 8:21It'll be a part of the inner Circle solo chat or solo group.
- 8:26OK, OK, now we've talked about hacks for the body and the mind.
- 8:31Now let's hear from the person who lives through every
- 8:34experiment with me. And this is Carmen's care
- 8:37partner corner. And here's what she would have
- 8:39me say to you today. So here's the thing about
- 8:42Bryce's hacks. I've learned that my job isn't
- 8:44to keep up, it's to adapt. You couldn't keep up.
- 8:48No, it's teasing. That was me, that was Bryce, OK?
- 8:50Every time he finds a new rhythm or a workaround, it changes the
- 8:54rhythm for me too. And I've realized that
- 8:56adaptability is our shared superpower.
- 9:00Care partners, your hack might not be magnesium spray or music
- 9:04playlist. It might be flexibility.
- 9:07It's learning to pivot when the plans change or laugh when
- 9:10things go sideways. So my tip for care partners,
- 9:13don't chase perfection. Chase presents.
- 9:18The best hack is just being there, even if you can't fix it.
- 9:24I love that. Chase perfection.
- 9:26Not Chase presence, not perfection.
- 9:28That's the heartbeat of this whole episode.
- 9:32Very cool. All right, here we go.
- 9:35I'm going to wrap this up with three quick ones that keep me
- 9:40grounded. Ready.
- 9:41They're going to go fast. Three quick ones that keep me
- 9:42grounded. Get your pens out.
- 9:44Reverse engineering control. When everything feels
- 9:49unpredictable, I organize one small thing that I can control.
- 9:53My desk, my coffee mugs, my sock drawer.
- 9:55It's not about neatness, it's about peace.
- 9:57Just find that one thing quick. Quick wins quick little things
- 10:01to take control of #2 the 92nd rule.
- 10:06When frustration hits, I give myself 90 seconds to be mad, and
- 10:09then I move on because a bad moment doesn't deserve a whole
- 10:13day. It only deserves 90 seconds.
- 10:15And #3 do one thing that makes you feel useful.
- 10:20You know Parkinson's tries to whisper.
- 10:22You're less capable. So every day, do one small thing
- 10:25that proves it's wrong, that prove it wrong.
- 10:27Fix something to help someone, encourage someone.
- 10:31Purpose is Dopamine's best supplement.
- 10:34Oh, here that one. Purpose is Dopamine's best
- 10:37supplement. I got to write that one down.
- 10:39OK, drop one thing that makes you feel useful.
- 10:42It might inspire someone else's next good day.
- 10:46So hopefully those hacks are something that you can really
- 10:48implement into your day. And if you made it this far,
- 10:51guess what you did. You've unlocked the Bryce should
- 10:54have like a sound effect there. You've unlocked the Bryce ISM.
- 10:57OK, here is your Bryce ISM for today.
- 11:02You can't control Parkinson's, but you can control how creative
- 11:09you get about living with it. Simple, but true.
- 11:13All right, so this week, pick one of those hacks and make it
- 11:18yours. Adapt it, rename it.
- 11:20Well, don't think about renaming it.
- 11:21I think they're cool names. But anyway, adapt it, rename it,
- 11:24break it, improve it. Because survival with
- 11:26Parkinson's isn't just about doing it my way, it's about
- 11:30discovering your way. And let me know in the comments
- 11:33which one are you going to try first or do you have a weird
- 11:36hack of your own that works? Share it because you never know
- 11:39who might need help. And if you're ready to keep
- 11:41building connection, purpose, and humor into your journey,
- 11:44come over and join us in the inner circle again.
- 11:47There's a care partner group. There is a now a living solo
- 11:51group. And people are waiting to just
- 11:54communicate and do life with you.
- 11:55All right. And don't forget to subscribe.
- 11:56It's free, it helps the community grow, and it tells
- 11:59YouTube that Parkinson's stories matter.
- 12:01They really do. And until next time, you keep
- 12:03showing up, you keep laughing, and you keep doing life today.
- 12:08We'll see you later.
