- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Faithful Fitness Podcast. For my Dad. Coach
- 0:06Speaker 1: Alex Van Houghten helps to get stronger and mind, body,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and spirit. He believes that your body is a temple,
- 0:12Speaker 1: so taking good care of it is an actual worship.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I should know.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I live with them. Every week. He brings truth from
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Bible, tool some science and stories that will set
- 0:21Speaker 1: your heart on fire. May God bless you to become
- 0:24Speaker 1: everything He made you to be, just one percent better
- 0:27Speaker 1: every single day.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I think one of the things that we do in
- 0:31Speaker 3: our household that's very different is we will recognize behavioral
- 0:35Speaker 3: things in our children as a nutrition, exercise or sleep
- 0:39Speaker 3: issue before we say you're just in a stupid mood today,
- 0:43Speaker 3: what's your problem? I talk a lot about nutrition and
- 0:45Speaker 3: exercise and discipline in our household, and today you're going
- 0:49Speaker 3: to meet my secret weapon, my wife. This is not
- 0:53Speaker 3: an interview or a lecture. This is a practical conversation
- 0:57Speaker 3: about two people raising two kids in faith full fitness.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Let's get into it. Well, this is new to us.
- 1:06Speaker 3: We've never done this before. You are the only person
- 1:08Speaker 3: I've ever done an interview in faithful fitness so far
- 1:12Speaker 3: in person, and so Hi and welcome to the audience.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I'm getting to hang out with my wife, miss Kristen
- 1:18Speaker 3: van Outen. How are you doing today, Honey, I'm good.
- 1:20Speaker 4: You fed me a good lunch, so now here I am.
- 1:24Speaker 3: It was a shred lunch and we're going to talk
- 1:26Speaker 3: all about shred in a little bit. But the audience
- 1:30Speaker 3: doesn't know you, so they've spent a lot of time
- 1:32Speaker 3: with me the talking head in the closet and stuff,
- 1:35Speaker 3: but you've been like the supporter behind the scenes for
- 1:38Speaker 3: what like seven years?
- 1:39Speaker 2: Now? Eight years? How long have I been podcasting.
- 1:46Speaker 4: It?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:47Speaker 4: Seven?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, okay eight years ish, So rewind real
- 1:55Speaker 3: quick with me. We have a lot to talk about
- 1:57Speaker 3: in this podcast, but but I want you to reround
- 1:59Speaker 3: real quick with me. Okay, what was it like being
- 2:02Speaker 3: my wife when I first started talking to myself in
- 2:06Speaker 3: an office with a camera and a mic setup?
- 2:09Speaker 4: Ironically, it's probably the most professional setup of a podcast
- 2:14Speaker 4: that we've ever had.
- 2:16Speaker 2: That's so true.
- 2:18Speaker 4: You spent a whole weekend building that beautiful palette wall.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yes, and.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Biggest opstle was probably keeping our two three year old
- 2:31Speaker 4: quiet and from the outside looking. And it's very cool
- 2:37Speaker 4: to see how far you've come.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Oh, that's very sweet to be because I remember I
- 2:41Speaker 3: remember in there that we had a two story house
- 2:44Speaker 3: and so like it was a pretty professional setup in
- 2:47Speaker 3: the sense that I had like the mic, and I
- 2:49Speaker 3: had the palette wall with the bookshelves behind me and
- 2:51Speaker 3: stuff in the front. But every car that drove by,
- 2:54Speaker 3: you could hear it picked up that. Every time Gabriel cried,
- 2:58Speaker 3: I could hear that, And then upstairs sounded like a
- 3:01Speaker 3: herd of elephants every time that you guys like walked
- 3:04Speaker 3: through the room. And I remember like pausing to like
- 3:07Speaker 3: make it stop so that I could continue talking. But
- 3:11Speaker 3: but you also kept him from like entering that space
- 3:15Speaker 3: of the whole house.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Well, they were clear doors, and so he came to
- 3:18Speaker 4: your doors you were done. Yeah, it's not.
- 3:26Speaker 3: But it's funny you say that that was the most
- 3:27Speaker 3: professional setup, I mean outside of maybe this, which I guess,
- 3:31Speaker 3: like it looks professional this way, but like nobody needs
- 3:34Speaker 3: to see what's what's No, No, nobody sees behind the camera.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's rough.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Maybe we need a behind the.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Scene maybe, but but thencrets No, No, it's like a magician.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I'm just kidding.
- 3:47Speaker 3: So so the Then we did it here in the office,
- 3:51Speaker 3: and that was the paint of the butt. Everybody was
- 3:53Speaker 3: always mowing their lawn or something. And then I baby
- 3:57Speaker 3: Bee baby Bennett. He was not quiet, killed Bennett Mann
- 4:05Speaker 3: and a toddler.
- 4:06Speaker 2: So then I moved to the closet. We had to
- 4:10Speaker 2: lock you up, and I hell out.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I hung a piece of plywood like from the ceiling
- 4:20Speaker 3: with blue behind it.
- 4:21Speaker 4: And I refuse to do your laundry.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Because you kept hitting your head. Yeah, yeah, well we're
- 4:27Speaker 3: out now, so uh, we've come out of the closet.
- 4:31Speaker 3: On that note, Welcome to the Faithful Fitness Podcast. My
- 4:37Speaker 3: wife Kristin and I are going to have a lot
- 4:39Speaker 3: of fun today talking about families and how our family functions.
- 4:44Speaker 3: It's not perfect, but we do make sure that faith
- 4:47Speaker 3: and fitness are a part of what we do on
- 4:49Speaker 3: a regular basis. And one of the reasons I wanted
- 4:51Speaker 3: to rope you into this is because I'm always talking
- 4:53Speaker 3: about my wife and kids on this podcast. But like
- 4:57Speaker 3: you're I mean, you're arguably the better half. You're the
- 5:00Speaker 3: the other half that makes this work in our life,
- 5:02Speaker 3: and we live this all the time. So my question
- 5:05Speaker 3: to you is when you look at our lives and
- 5:09Speaker 3: you see how we choose to raise our kids, and
- 5:13Speaker 3: how we do the faith and how we do the
- 5:14Speaker 3: fitness thing. What are some of the things that we well,
- 5:20Speaker 3: we're firm on in our house that you see with
- 5:25Speaker 3: other families and stuff, they're just not quite as firm
- 5:27Speaker 3: on those things that really make the foundation for us.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I think where it starts is we were blessed to
- 5:34Speaker 4: have a background that taught us some very important knowledge
- 5:40Speaker 4: how to steward our bodies well. And so it's not
- 5:43Speaker 4: against other people if they didn't get that knowledge. Did
- 5:46Speaker 4: they have six years of nutrition course right? Did they
- 5:49Speaker 4: go through personal training certifications that taught them how magnificent
- 5:54Speaker 4: our bodies are but also how complicated they can be,
- 5:57Speaker 4: right despite the fact they adapt so quick to chosen circumstances.
- 6:03Speaker 4: And so I think that's our foundation in this is
- 6:07Speaker 4: we just if you know better, you do better. Yeah,
- 6:09Speaker 4: And so we know a little better. And you and
- 6:13Speaker 4: I both were not raised that way, So we spent
- 6:16Speaker 4: some years undoing some of those nutrition habits.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Yes, I had a.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Lot out of the box and freezer mills, and my
- 6:25Speaker 4: parents cooked for us very regularly, but I wouldn't call
- 6:28Speaker 4: it the healthiest food sure that I grew up with.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Then you the same. And so when you're giving kids,
- 6:36Speaker 4: you get the moment and the privilege and the honor
- 6:39Speaker 4: to pause and say, all right, just because that's how
- 6:42Speaker 4: I was raised, is how I want to do the
- 6:45Speaker 4: same for my kids. And so we chose a different
- 6:50Speaker 4: path for our kids.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you're really that's that's very smart to
- 6:54Speaker 3: put your finger on the education thing. I think often
- 6:57Speaker 3: how like, when I'm talking to it could be a client,
- 7:01Speaker 3: but it could also be just you know, parents in
- 7:03Speaker 3: our community and whatnot. And I take for granted something
- 7:07Speaker 3: like I know it has protein in it, I know
- 7:09Speaker 3: it has sugar in it. I know it has fats.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I know what good fats versus bad fats are Like,
- 7:14Speaker 3: I know those things, and I get to just take
- 7:16Speaker 3: that for granted. And so we have dinner time conversations
- 7:19Speaker 3: pretty regularly with our kids, or breakfast time or whenever
- 7:22Speaker 3: we're eating about about food and our like, our community
- 7:26Speaker 3: will say things like your kids say weird stuff like
- 7:29Speaker 3: like oh, no, I've had too much sugar today.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I can't have that, or Mom's gonna say.
- 7:33Speaker 3: No, Mom's gonna say, oh, hey, does that have caffeine
- 7:36Speaker 3: in it?
- 7:37Speaker 2: Let me see the nutrition label? You know, like that.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Our kids ask those questions, they talk about those things
- 7:42Speaker 3: because that's just how we run our household.
- 7:44Speaker 2: And you're right, it really.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Just starts with a foundation of education. You are a dietitian,
- 7:51Speaker 3: went too. You're actually more educated than I am, news
- 7:53Speaker 3: slashed to everybody. She actually has a master's degree in
- 7:56Speaker 3: nutrition and dietetics. Thanks for that. I'll kiss you for
- 8:00Speaker 3: that later. But and I'm twenty years in training and
- 8:05Speaker 3: exercise science. So when you put those two things together,
- 8:08Speaker 3: it's just we see the body differently than most people
- 8:13Speaker 3: see the body. And that that was very poignant With
- 8:16Speaker 3: our children. It's like, hey, we've got a we've got
- 8:20Speaker 3: a super important person God put in our life to
- 8:22Speaker 3: take really good care of. We're going to make darn
- 8:25Speaker 3: sure that they've got what they need from a nutrition perspective,
- 8:28Speaker 3: they got what they need from a movement perspective, and
- 8:31Speaker 3: we're going to form our household around.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Doing those habits right.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Does anything stand out to you as we raise our
- 8:38Speaker 3: kids that you're like, man, that's that's one thing. That's
- 8:41Speaker 3: that's a thing that we do differently.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Basic nutrition obviously, when I pat Bennett's lunch for school,
- 8:49Speaker 4: I mean he has vegetables going. When I hear what
- 8:52Speaker 4: some of these kids are eating at lunch, we'll table
- 8:55Speaker 4: that for another school nutrition. But then it eats different
- 9:01Speaker 4: at lunch when I have control over the situation versus
- 9:05Speaker 4: most kids that he's sitting at a table with. And
- 9:08Speaker 4: he knows why. He's not jealous, he doesn't wish it
- 9:13Speaker 4: could be different. He just knows that that's how we
- 9:15Speaker 4: do it. And what a blessing that will be. I
- 9:18Speaker 4: know when he gets older, we joke he'll be a
- 9:20Speaker 4: little vegetarian because he's a little gorilla, and like, so
- 9:23Speaker 4: be it. At some point you do have to release
- 9:26Speaker 4: them to me their own decisions, right But right now
- 9:29Speaker 4: I believe that we're laying a beautiful foundation for them.
- 9:34Speaker 4: But it even goes past nutrition in their sleep. Like
- 9:38Speaker 4: I guard my sleep. I love my sleep. I get
- 9:41Speaker 4: lots of sleep, not a night out or a morning
- 9:46Speaker 4: person something in between. But we protect our kids' sleep
- 9:50Speaker 4: because they need it, and we know that's the only
- 9:53Speaker 4: way that even though we feed them well, if they
- 9:55Speaker 4: don't sleep well, they're not building anything well. And so
- 9:58Speaker 4: I think our kids are blessed by all aspects of
- 10:03Speaker 4: not just nutrition but just basic good habits.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's such a good point.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Gabriel broke us into the sleep thing because he was then,
- 10:11Speaker 3: So Gabriel's are our oldest, so he was the one who,
- 10:15Speaker 3: like if he didn't get his nap or if he
- 10:19Speaker 3: went to bed too late or something like that, the
- 10:22Speaker 3: next day. He wasn't He wasn't difficult in the way
- 10:25Speaker 3: a lot of people think it, Like he wasn't like
- 10:26Speaker 3: on the ground throwing fits or whatever, but like that
- 10:29Speaker 3: kid could not focus to save he was manic. It
- 10:33Speaker 3: was like this crazy manic energy. It's Oliver, like, why
- 10:35Speaker 3: is this child not listening? What's going on? Oh, we
- 10:38Speaker 3: messed up his sleep yesterday and we can't And so
- 10:41Speaker 3: we became the nap Nazis. Like we were like, no,
- 10:44Speaker 3: when it's naptime, Gabriel lays down at this time, and
- 10:47Speaker 3: he wakes up at this time, and we go to
- 10:48Speaker 3: bed at this time. And I mean we had to
- 10:52Speaker 3: like in our lives that would even affect our friendships.
- 10:54Speaker 3: It was just like, you know, we could come over
- 10:56Speaker 3: to your house, but that's o our nap time, so
- 10:58Speaker 3: we're not going to do that that.
- 11:00Speaker 4: And we can have dinner at four because we need
- 11:03Speaker 4: to be as sick.
- 11:05Speaker 2: For right.
- 11:07Speaker 3: But we were so serious about that because we saw
- 11:09Speaker 3: in him that that made such a huge difference. And
- 11:14Speaker 3: I think one of the things that we do in
- 11:15Speaker 3: our household that's very different is we will recognize behavioral
- 11:19Speaker 3: things in our children as a nutrition, exercise, or sleep
- 11:23Speaker 3: issue before we say, you're just in a stupid mood today,
- 11:27Speaker 3: what's your problem, or like, hey, you know, I don't
- 11:29Speaker 3: know what's going on with him right now, but we've
- 11:31Speaker 3: got to figure something out. It's not that it's like, no,
- 11:33Speaker 3: we as parents have the opportunity to feed our kids well,
- 11:37Speaker 3: to make sure they get to bed on time, to
- 11:39Speaker 3: make sure they get enough movement in a day, and
- 11:40Speaker 3: if they don't get those things, we notice and we
- 11:44Speaker 3: always fall back on that.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yes, we always fall back on that.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I don't know, I feel like and I mean you
- 11:51Speaker 3: talk to a lot more moms than I do, but
- 11:53Speaker 3: I feel like that is a thing that not many
- 11:55Speaker 3: parents consider when their children are out of sorts. It's
- 11:59Speaker 3: not like, oh, it's been like three days of poor sleep,
- 12:02Speaker 3: or oh, we had a donut for breakfast today.
- 12:05Speaker 2: No wonder they're throwing a fit at nine am. They
- 12:09Speaker 2: don't think like that.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Well that so many are in that just day to day,
- 12:14Speaker 4: like if I can just get through today, I'm going
- 12:16Speaker 4: to claim his new mercies tomorrow and do it all
- 12:18Speaker 4: over again, right, versus truly taking ownership and what it
- 12:22Speaker 4: means to train a child up in the way they
- 12:24Speaker 4: should go mind, body, spirit.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yeah, well said, Well said, I think I think it's
- 12:30Speaker 3: nice that our children can cans take that for granted,
- 12:35Speaker 3: you know, because I mean they don't know any different.
- 12:38Speaker 3: They don't know any different exactly. And that's the thing,
- 12:41Speaker 3: you know, another thing in nutrition, we'll talk we'll talk
- 12:43Speaker 3: more about family nutrition probably in a later episode, as
- 12:46Speaker 3: people ask questions and we get we get parents thinking
- 12:49Speaker 3: through this. But when children buck the system, they're like
- 12:56Speaker 3: they'll they'll think, oh, why does my friend get to
- 12:59Speaker 3: do this?
- 13:00Speaker 2: Or no, I don't want to eat that.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I'll hear parents say things like, oh, we can't have
- 13:06Speaker 3: broccoli at dinner because little Timmy whoever, won't eat it right.
- 13:12Speaker 3: All he'll eat is mac and cheese, right, And I
- 13:14Speaker 3: get it. Like, We've had plenty of our own struggles,
- 13:17Speaker 3: especially with Bennett. Bennett's much more picky of an eater
- 13:21Speaker 3: than Gabriel is. Was that we talked about last night eggs.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Something about eggs. What did he say?
- 13:29Speaker 4: Nowhere? He said we shouldn't have any taste buds because
- 13:32Speaker 4: then I'd eat my eggs way faster.
- 13:36Speaker 2: True true story. I'm like, you don't like your eggs?
- 13:38Speaker 2: He's like, no, this.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Kid has been eating scrambled eggs for four years, four
- 13:46Speaker 3: days a week, easy, easy.
- 13:48Speaker 2: That's a normal nutrition thing in our house.
- 13:50Speaker 3: We're like torturing him by making meat eggs, but like,
- 13:54Speaker 3: but he doesn't. He doesn't like them, and he'll say,
- 13:57Speaker 3: I don't like this, but I'll eat it because it's.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Good for me.
- 14:01Speaker 3: And like, as parents, we've had to fight that because
- 14:06Speaker 3: Bennett would prefer chicken nuggets for every meal. You know,
- 14:09Speaker 3: the little Dino dealis he would eat those for breakfast
- 14:12Speaker 3: or mac and cheese if we gave him the option.
- 14:15Speaker 3: But we know that's not what's best for him. We know,
- 14:18Speaker 3: like we could easily say we had mac and cheese
- 14:22Speaker 3: and Dino nuggets for breakfast because that's all Bennett will eat.
- 14:25Speaker 2: But we're the parents.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Yeah, like if we say this isn't what we're eating,
- 14:30Speaker 3: this isn't good for you. Over time, let's work together
- 14:32Speaker 3: to find something that I mean, isn't torture to you,
- 14:36Speaker 3: but is good for you. And then I mean, if
- 14:39Speaker 3: that's what's available, that's what we'll eat.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Well, I think a couple of things there, though, we
- 14:44Speaker 4: take the time to explain why so many times people
- 14:50Speaker 4: could choose the easy way, because that's what I said,
- 14:52Speaker 4: versus stopping down taking the few minutes to explain why
- 14:56Speaker 4: we're making this choice, whether they agree with it or not,
- 14:59Speaker 4: at least no lot. And then they also get to
- 15:02Speaker 4: be a part of the conversation and the solution. So
- 15:06Speaker 4: now they're an active agent in the decision. And when
- 15:09Speaker 4: they were little, it was do you want A or B?
- 15:11Speaker 4: Not what do you want in this beautiful pantry of options? Right,
- 15:17Speaker 4: that's too much for them?
- 15:18Speaker 2: Yes, that's too much freedom, that's too much for me.
- 15:21Speaker 4: We still gave them the option to make the choice themselves,
- 15:24Speaker 4: whether we controlled the direction.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Yeah, true, that's true. That's true.
- 15:29Speaker 3: And then that therein lies the things that our children
- 15:33Speaker 3: say that not a lot of children say. If you
- 15:35Speaker 3: ask Bennett, why do you eat eggs for breakfast? Why
- 15:38Speaker 3: is that something Mom and dad push on you. He
- 15:40Speaker 3: would say, Oh, they have protein and they have lots
- 15:42Speaker 3: of nutrients, and it really helps me. He understands that
- 15:45Speaker 3: it is at a six year old level.
- 15:46Speaker 4: But he knows at sixteen he wants to be strong,
- 15:49Speaker 4: and he knows at sixteen he wants to be able.
- 15:51Speaker 2: To look like that's exactly right, yep.
- 15:53Speaker 4: And he knows he can't make muscle without.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Protein, right right. And he knows there's not a lot
- 15:58Speaker 3: of protein in mac and cheese. He was very pointed.
- 16:00Speaker 3: I don't know if I told you about this, but
- 16:01Speaker 3: when he looked at the nutrition label, he was like,
- 16:04Speaker 3: there's only three grams of protein in here. I'm never
- 16:07Speaker 3: going to meet my protein goal with this. Okay, Well,
- 16:13Speaker 3: I feel like and and please tell us if you
- 16:16Speaker 3: want to hear more conversations about family nutrition and feeding
- 16:20Speaker 3: our kids, well on what that looks like. Obviously, you
- 16:23Speaker 3: as the audience, ask us questions and maybe we'll get
- 16:26Speaker 3: on here and talk through them again because it's such
- 16:29Speaker 3: a huge topic in our house, but we't want to
- 16:31Speaker 3: talk about if it's boring to you or not useful
- 16:34Speaker 3: to you. But I did want to switch gears a
- 16:36Speaker 3: little bit because we're in a garage gym, and you
- 16:39Speaker 3: are a working mom with two boys, and it's the
- 16:44Speaker 3: beginning of the year. So we're doing a shred together
- 16:47Speaker 3: and we're lifting weights and we're running. We don't really
- 16:50Speaker 3: lift weights together all the time every time, but but
- 16:56Speaker 3: I love you all the time every time. But our
- 16:59Speaker 3: workhouse don't look the same because you have some struggles
- 17:02Speaker 3: that I don't have, and I have some struggles you
- 17:04Speaker 3: don't have. And I like heavy metal. I mean, that's
- 17:07Speaker 3: really it's really what it comes down to. Your worship
- 17:09Speaker 3: music you like to listen to when you work out.
- 17:11Speaker 3: I can't lift to it, man, I can't do it anyway.
- 17:18Speaker 3: So we have a struggle though that I want to
- 17:20Speaker 3: talk about, and that is we record content in this garage.
- 17:23Speaker 3: I trained clients in this garage. You work out in
- 17:27Speaker 3: this garage, and I work out in this garage. Can
- 17:30Speaker 3: you tell me about how difficult it is to manage
- 17:34Speaker 3: the schedule of the garage gym and how you because
- 17:37Speaker 3: a lot of people that would be like a deal
- 17:38Speaker 3: breaker for them. They'd be like, I can't, I can't
- 17:41Speaker 3: do the fitness things exactly. It can't work out it's
- 17:45Speaker 3: all scheduled up. But you work really hard at this
- 17:48Speaker 3: and you haven't rejoined the gym that you left when
- 17:51Speaker 3: we got the equipment that you needed in here. So
- 17:54Speaker 3: how do you manage like working out in a day
- 17:57Speaker 3: between work and kids.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Well, we talk a lot, and thankfully your schedules super consistent,
- 18:04Speaker 4: and so you have put the parameters around certain things
- 18:07Speaker 4: that you do in the week to where I just
- 18:09Speaker 4: know that Thursday mornings, clients are here, Thursday mornings you're
- 18:14Speaker 4: going to record a podcast. But looking at your week
- 18:17Speaker 4: just it's intentionality. It's deciding that I'm going to be
- 18:21Speaker 4: intentional this week, but also flexible when I need to be.
- 18:24Speaker 4: And then thankfully for you, sometimes it's like, hey, I
- 18:28Speaker 4: can only work out today, especially on Wednesdays because that's
- 18:31Speaker 4: my heavy workday. I have to work out at seven am,
- 18:34Speaker 4: and you're going to have to get the kids to
- 18:35Speaker 4: school today. And thankfully you see why you need to
- 18:40Speaker 4: get the kids to school today and you're going to
- 18:42Speaker 4: do that for me. But I just think it even
- 18:45Speaker 4: if I'm going to the gym, it's just intentionality to
- 18:48Speaker 4: decide that I've set this amount of time aside today
- 18:51Speaker 4: to work out.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Yeah, save us money too, We don't have to have
- 18:54Speaker 2: a gym membership.
- 18:56Speaker 4: I canceled that though.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Oh snap, it's almost saving.
- 19:00Speaker 4: That's money that's frozen.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Oh okay, okay, it's frozen gym. Enough are we there yet? Okay?
- 19:09Speaker 3: It's the dress on it helps. It's it's also winter here,
- 19:17Speaker 3: so it gets cold in here.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Sometimes it's my rest.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Now, I will say that having a garage gym and
- 19:24Speaker 3: scheduling it in the middle of things and knowing like
- 19:26Speaker 3: this is my hour, Like if I don't work out,
- 19:28Speaker 3: I don't get to work out today. To me, that's
- 19:30Speaker 3: very motivating. There's like a certain level of urgency to
- 19:33Speaker 3: it that makes me do the thing. Have you noticed
- 19:36Speaker 3: that too?
- 19:38Speaker 1: Or No?
- 19:39Speaker 4: I don't like working out as much as you, so
- 19:43Speaker 4: I'd love any excuse not to. But I am committed.
- 19:48Speaker 4: I am committed by three to four days a week,
- 19:50Speaker 4: depending on what phase you have me in that I'll
- 19:53Speaker 4: do it.
- 19:54Speaker 2: What phase are you in now? I don't know what
- 19:57Speaker 2: you're You're in the hypertriview phase.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Lived in three to four sets of heavyweights, eight to
- 20:02Speaker 3: twelve reps for the guns for the gun show.
- 20:05Speaker 4: It just changed on Mondays.
- 20:07Speaker 3: It did it did in your defense shred well during
- 20:10Speaker 3: the shred, so So for those of you who don't
- 20:12Speaker 3: know we're we do in Faithful Fitness, we do a
- 20:14Speaker 3: twenty eight day shred and usually we do it January
- 20:17Speaker 3: and May. But during the shred, we're actively working to
- 20:21Speaker 3: make our body burn fat better as a fuel source.
- 20:24Speaker 3: And one of the issues that you wrestle with when
- 20:26Speaker 3: you do a shred is you could you could actually
- 20:29Speaker 3: lose muscle tissue if you don't actively tell your body
- 20:31Speaker 3: you need to keep it around. And so you're in
- 20:33Speaker 3: here lifting heavyweights and doing the thing.
- 20:36Speaker 2: You're doing a good job fasting and fasting cardio and cardio.
- 20:41Speaker 4: It's exhausting.
- 20:43Speaker 3: We're only only four days the twenty four more to go.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Hang with me. She hasn't gotten irritable enough to slap
- 20:50Speaker 2: me yet.
- 20:51Speaker 4: So no, it's my favorite challenge that you do.
- 20:57Speaker 2: I like it. I think it's I think it's good.
- 20:59Speaker 3: Well, so what it came out of actually, and you
- 21:02Speaker 3: know this as my wife, I would regularly go through
- 21:05Speaker 3: an endurance phase twice a year because it's important to
- 21:09Speaker 3: revisit that phase of training to allow your body to
- 21:11Speaker 3: burn fat wells of fuel source. And it also for
- 21:14Speaker 3: me from a spiritual perspective, just practicing fasting. If you
- 21:18Speaker 3: don't make time and space for that in your week,
- 21:20Speaker 3: it's not going to happen. So that was really useful
- 21:23Speaker 3: and helpful to me. And what I found is a
- 21:25Speaker 3: lot of my clients needed to do that too. So
- 21:27Speaker 3: I just started inviting people to join me during my
- 21:30Speaker 3: phase of endurance, and that's where the shred really came from.
- 21:33Speaker 3: The hard part was making it like general, you know,
- 21:37Speaker 3: like exactly, like, Hey, I'm a woman, so how is
- 21:43Speaker 3: that different from you coach Alex and what you need
- 21:46Speaker 3: to do in a shred or I'm a beginner. I
- 21:49Speaker 3: don't work out regularly, So how do I shred in
- 21:52Speaker 3: a way that doesn't hurt my metabolism and it isn't
- 21:55Speaker 3: too intense for me? And so I think that was
- 21:57Speaker 3: the hardest part of inviting people into that was just
- 22:00Speaker 3: kind of dividing that. But you've you've done a great
- 22:03Speaker 3: job in helping me, helping me see it well, Like
- 22:06Speaker 3: like you said, you don't like to work out as
- 22:08Speaker 3: much as I do, So if you can, if you
- 22:10Speaker 3: follow the shred program, then then I know I can
- 22:14Speaker 3: ask that of other people too.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Yeah, if I can do it, anyone can do it.
- 22:18Speaker 2: I wasn't gonna say it that way, but.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Okay, so so I feel like we've we've covered a
- 22:24Speaker 3: lot of things that give people an insight into our household.
- 22:29Speaker 3: At the moment, I did want to ask one more
- 22:31Speaker 3: question before we wrap this up. What is something that
- 22:35Speaker 3: that people probably think about our house? Given all the
- 22:39Speaker 3: stuff we do in the world with church and faithful
- 22:44Speaker 3: fitness and nutrition and exercise and stuff. What's something people
- 22:48Speaker 3: probably think about our house that just isn't true.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Probably that we live this rigid nutrition plan one hundred
- 22:57Speaker 4: percent of the time and our kids are these deprived,
- 22:59Speaker 4: little free old children who don't get to eat anything yummy,
- 23:06Speaker 4: which is not true. Our kids know the pleasures in
- 23:09Speaker 4: this life as much as we do, and we probably
- 23:13Speaker 4: live what eighty five fifteen some seasons we just came
- 23:17Speaker 4: out of the holiday, some seasons eighty twenty. But we
- 23:20Speaker 4: balance things really well when we do want to go
- 23:24Speaker 4: out to eat, or when we do know the holiday
- 23:26Speaker 4: dinner is gonna have all the cast roles in the
- 23:29Speaker 4: pie and it's gonna be so worth it, and our
- 23:32Speaker 4: kids know it. We have a candy bucket inside like
- 23:34Speaker 4: we're not beyond it, but we are teaching appropriate healthy
- 23:40Speaker 4: limits and balances, because there's an inner ch toddler in
- 23:43Speaker 4: all of us. Just this week, I had to dump
- 23:47Speaker 4: out the Halloween chocolate because on the shred, if I'm
- 23:51Speaker 4: gonna be touted by anything in this house, it's chocolate.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Gonna want to go get that little bite sized Snickers,
- 23:58Speaker 4: and so just removing it. But it doesn't mean it's
- 24:01Speaker 4: not here.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, And it doesn't mean you don't enjoy Snickers now.
- 24:04Speaker 3: And then it's just, yeah, you were willing to settle
- 24:11Speaker 3: for a Snickers.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Really where it's at now?
- 24:16Speaker 3: I think I think you're one hundred percent right on that.
- 24:19Speaker 3: When so, I talk a lot on the show specifically
- 24:22Speaker 3: about stewarding the body God's given me or how to
- 24:25Speaker 3: make the most out of the body God's given me.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Right, But.
- 24:30Speaker 3: In Ecclesiastes it says that one of the pleasures. I
- 24:33Speaker 3: know it's a very depressing book, but it can be
- 24:37Speaker 3: a very depressing book. But in Ecclesiastes there's a there's
- 24:41Speaker 3: not all of it's depressing.
- 24:42Speaker 2: There's a lot of depressing. Steffinically vanity.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Vanity all is vanity, and it doesn't matter, it doesn't
- 24:46Speaker 3: matter what you try in this world. There's no real
- 24:48Speaker 3: joy until you follow God and keep his commandments. But
- 24:52Speaker 3: there is a there's a few sections in Ecclesiastes that
- 24:55Speaker 3: talk about what makes life worth living, And one of
- 24:58Speaker 3: the things that the writer says is one of the
- 25:00Speaker 3: great pleasures that God's given us.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Is to eat and drink.
- 25:05Speaker 3: It is like we know that that we steward our
- 25:08Speaker 3: bodies nutritionally. That feeds the metabolism, helps our hormones, gives
- 25:12Speaker 3: us all the building blocks we need for new cells
- 25:15Speaker 3: and fuels, service, and parenthood and and shenanigans. But but
- 25:22Speaker 3: nutrition is not the only reason we eat.
- 25:25Speaker 2: We for pleasure, we for social connection, we for joy.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Like like I always joke that I have carrot cake
- 25:33Speaker 3: on my birthday.
- 25:35Speaker 2: I'll go for a run.
- 25:37Speaker 3: But I eat carrot cake on my birthday and it
- 25:39Speaker 3: won't be replaced by spinach ever, Like if that ever happens,
- 25:43Speaker 3: it's not me.
- 25:43Speaker 2: I don't know what's happening. But I've been replaced by
- 25:45Speaker 2: my body double.
- 25:48Speaker 4: It would be cauliflower.
- 25:49Speaker 3: But okay, no, thanks, cauliflower and olives.
- 25:54Speaker 2: I fro'm ever beating colorflower and olives.
- 25:57Speaker 4: You've lost your taste.
- 25:58Speaker 3: I've left I have covid or I've been replaced by
- 26:02Speaker 3: my clone. But I think that I think that's a
- 26:07Speaker 3: good truth. I think that's a good truth to center
- 26:10Speaker 3: on because I hear that when I take the men
- 26:12Speaker 3: to lunch or something.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Yeah, they can't believe what you're eating.
- 26:15Speaker 2: They're like, oh, my gosh, you eat carbs, Like who
- 26:18Speaker 2: doesn't eat carbs?
- 26:19Speaker 4: Like, yeah, eats so many carbs it's not even fair.
- 26:24Speaker 3: And the difference from a training perspective, and I'll have
- 26:28Speaker 3: to I always have to explain it. I lifted weights today,
- 26:32Speaker 3: I used carbohydrates in my body, and now I'm recovering,
- 26:36Speaker 3: so yes, I.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Need to replenish these carbohydrates.
- 26:39Speaker 4: Also, your genetics say that, Remember we took twenty three meters.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Yes, yes, and I'm caught us.
- 26:45Speaker 4: Well, we already knew it intuitively because we've done enough
- 26:48Speaker 4: nutrition challenges and whatnot. But our genetics said, your body
- 26:53Speaker 4: tolerates carbohydrates, whereas mine tolerates that better. So right, my diet.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Sent fat easily. I attribute that to the Shawnee Indian
- 27:04Speaker 3: in her.
- 27:05Speaker 2: But I could be wrong.
- 27:06Speaker 3: But yes, like the amount of fat that you eat
- 27:09Speaker 3: on a regular basis, percentage wise, it would destroy my
- 27:12Speaker 3: digestive tract and I've tried it, like I've tried to
- 27:15Speaker 3: eat that was paleo or whatever, and man.
- 27:20Speaker 2: It just it was awful.
- 27:22Speaker 3: It was not good, did not feel good. And you've
- 27:24Speaker 3: tried on the opposite side of things. You tried to
- 27:27Speaker 3: eat more plant based died at one point when we
- 27:28Speaker 3: were working together at Lifetime, and you're like, no, thanks.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Let's be honest. Carbs are way better than proteins.
- 27:36Speaker 2: They taste better anyway.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I love something crunchy right now.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Making me hungry, and I just had lunch. That's the shred.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Twenty four more days, twenty four more days until a chip. Well, Hey,
- 27:57Speaker 3: I wanted to say thank you so much for joining
- 27:59Speaker 3: us for this conversation. I hope that it gave you
- 28:02Speaker 3: some insight into our household, and also I hope to
- 28:05Speaker 3: do some more of this with my lovely wife in
- 28:08Speaker 3: the future. So if you have some questions or thoughts
- 28:11Speaker 3: about what it looks like to run a household with
- 28:14Speaker 3: fitness and nutrition in a positive and powerful way that's

- 28:20Speaker 3: good care of your own self, I'd love for you

- 28:32Speaker 3: Sweetheart, before we finish this, I actually would like to
- 28:34Speaker 3: pray over you, and I would like to pray over
- 28:37Speaker 3: our listeners to this conversation in their houses.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Would you mind doing that with me?
- 28:40Speaker 3: Okay, Father God, thank you so much for this day.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Thank you for the opportunity to do this, to have
- 28:46Speaker 3: a wonderful conversation with the person who makes me a
- 28:49Speaker 3: better man.
- 28:50Speaker 2: God.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I pray that you bless her and keep her help
- 28:52Speaker 3: us to continue to build our household on a rock.
- 28:56Speaker 3: I also pray that you would bless those who are listening.
- 28:59Speaker 3: I don't know the situation in their household, Lord, but
- 29:02Speaker 3: I pray that your Holy Spirit would lead them, help
- 29:05Speaker 3: them to eat in a way that is good for
- 29:08Speaker 3: their body, help them to guide their children in a
- 29:10Speaker 3: way that would grow them into the men and women
- 29:13Speaker 3: you created them to be. And if there's any obstacles
- 29:17Speaker 3: or struggles that they're wrestling with, Lord, I pray that
- 29:19Speaker 3: they would seek community and help and feedback in that
- 29:24Speaker 3: so that they get the knowledge and the wisdom and
- 29:27Speaker 3: the accountability that they need to move forward on that front. God,
- 29:31Speaker 3: I love you, I thank you, and I praise you
- 29:32Speaker 3: in Jesus' name. Amen, guys, thank you so much for
